"Everybody was forced to have to absolutely and. I think it's just a different way of working isn't it? I think we're all sort of missing now colleagues Missing that sort of discussion that you have when you're in the work place so I think living in this sort of isolated world I sent me a will WanNa do it long term but I do hope that when we come out the other side of this we just go back to how we were Weekday China. Hold onto some of the some of the good things and some of the benefits and you see absolutely. That's why we wanted to talk to you. Today became highly recommended for Mark Liqueur. Your area of expertise is as a safety consultant. I should've asked you before. Wake I wanted to get into this virtual online stuff so bad. I should've ask you more about yourself and your experience as a safety consultant so tell us a little bit about that. Okay yeah well. I'm a chemical engineer by training. Have a engineering degree on. Then I've been working for thirty years now. I'm afraid to say so. I swear four I see I bake chemical company the UK. And I did a number of different roles of pump design plant operations and then fouts fifteen years ago. I got a job as a personal safety specialist so allows when I already saw Leading these risk assessments and then for the last ten years what for Ab as a safety consultant. So and I've done yet. So Iris Work of you. Know include chemicals to oil and gas in love what smoke bake on gas companies in the UK and Bevis sees one couple of final things. Here as we wrap this up talking about how technology and all this virtual stuff has changed the way we do things when it comes to safety. What are you see has been the biggest and most positive change in your career? I think the type of risk assessments that I lead. Ovo has all versus hostage reviews existed when I was healing. Janette the depth and the detail. We now go into means that. We've cough Baugh clearer understanding of what the risks on law fire high hostage facilities. And that's not saying that Perfect person safety incidents aren't going have role but that's that's going to be a positive juicy an improvement in attitude. Yes I do. I think in all levels of organization as well from I think the the shop floor the operators much more willing to put the hands up you know when they fail things aren't right and the all suitably protected. I may really buy into the risk assessment process and understand what were what we're trying to achieve that but it's not just a tick box exercise that they can see real change from it. You know once the actions and recommendations are implemented over up through the action so yeah I think that's been a big challenge. Okay so Rachel in all your thirty year. Experience as a safety consultant. I'm sure you've seen a lot of frightening things as it relates to safety. Is there one that kind of sticks out in your mind? I think has a city full gas processing plant. Few years ago that a fairly recently sauces up within having quite a few operational. I'm one of these problems. Related to to an interface. Why that was a level control valve at controls the liquid metal and the separator and if that level control valves too much it would allow high pressure gas. The low pressure system downstream sequels. A major post safety incident and they were having a top major problems with that level control valve from south up to the extent that the way they were running the plan was they have an operator operating a manual valve so physically out on the planet's on the retail pricing a manual valve. Somebody saying open at a little bit players. Let back as a way of controlling the level in the sport so he was basically student right next to as low pressure equipment that if he got it wrong there was a trip to shut it down but that was the only thing that would stop at the. If he got it wrong. You can have to on. I we talked through the scenario in the risk assessment that the representative of the plants slowly went Paler Palin and Paola what. He realized what potential consequences were somebody. Becky simple IRA or miscommunication and I think sons out to me is the sort of big process safety incident that we clearly identified that they haven't sold about before and I can remember him saying to make the end of the dice when I get back to the fun. I'm tyrod that temporary exemption. We've got to run on this way because clearly. It's not the way to do it. So yeah that's the kind of the most important one. I think the iphone covered as part of doing assessment. And so have you got one big safety tip of the day force. I think so building on that I think even if you're plants being running for years and years and years and you've not had any major per se incidents doesn't mean to say that the potential risks onto outlast. So if you can take the time to stat fought on Review off your plans and understand what process activists you've got you might uncover these ones the for one reason on earth either. Something's changed original by over goal posts of moves or things aren't working how they were originally envisaged toward that. There are some big processing outlast. "The people four process automation. Today's podcast really is international in scope. More than just the British voiceover in my southern accent. I have on the line x now. My Laptop twos in caster. I Have Rachel Spoon Lee. Who is in London? England that right Rachel while lamented England Russell but not really inland. And I'm in the North West of England pull of Manchester allows football teams. Yeah those are very very popular. Football teams in some. You know when I think of England. Unfortunately you know the only town I know is London so I just London in England just seem seem to go together for me. How far is where you are from London? Oh couple hundred miles okay. All right okay. Yeah actually it's maybe less than it's probably on the quiet for a four hour drive to London so the name of Your Company is Abe. Yeah that's right and your offices are actually in Warrington. Yeah we have. Api was high coated in Switzerland. But we have offices around the world. We've got a number of officers in the UK but the consulting business which is the this inside. What all we have offices just outside Warrington yet. Okay but you're not at your office right now right now. No unfortunately not lots of people with you from her. So is that in Warrenton or close. By or yeah. I'm about half an hour drive from the office towards Chester. Okay wealth all right so if you go to. Abc's website which will put that in the show notes but the homepage comes up and says digital solutions that create real value for your business and then there's a link that says find out more so tell us a little bit more. Api based various dish till offerings and we sort of spoke software that we have clients and through to really trying to move over the control system type called that we have a moving those forward to the next level so there is a huge amount of offering out that associated with the products that a BP provide. I'm not an expert on those products. My side is on the consultancy and what we can do on the consultancy side to develop the low on the digital side moving over show. Are we talking about what's now called a I or element of this way using but chill developing with virtual? Reality headsets where we could use the headsets to virtually visit plants particularly of seeing the moment at the moment. When it's difficult for people to do that so it could be useful inspection purposes troubleshooting or if we have a service contract we'll break down we can go and do initial look that piece of equipment fast and then not make sure that when we when we turn on site which owning up with right parts to do that and all of these processes and automation and all that sort of thing. It is a tremendous bearing on health and safety and even probably environmental factors. Doesn't it does. I think the fact is a big absurd. Fit IN. Improvement are using technology but by being able to fight data operating plants in real time until to use that. Data of sleet has the ability. Then health environmental. But the real reason. I wanted to talk to you today. You're obviously at home. Your office is an open your over in England. I'm at home. Houston would be the town that I would reference that most people would recognize in Texas. My home is accident of a little town. That's about fifty miles north and a little west Houston on what's called Lake Conroe and I'm at home. Because of the Corona Virus Cove nineteen and all that sort of thing and so your company. Has I guess done something. Rather unique or dave adapted in a way to respond and to still help companies in this situation that we're in. Tell us about that in my line of work from a chemical engineer by background and safety consultant. So I spend the bulk of my time leading risk assessments for the companies so Neil Sector the chemical sector in the UK under around the world. And we've always traditionally the these risk assessments has also posted suburb use. Hi's magma familiar with insights Assessments low facilities. We've done all of these face to face. There's a strong belief in industry as a teamster days. You have to have a teen room focused on today in. That's how you get a good output from US Thursday night show that you've identified the hazards that you show so we were sort of going into lockdown. We could see this happening. And until first week lockdown I was supposed to be traveling down to Cambridge. Do Three days they one client and it was very reluctantly postponed at the last minute because they've got Project Dome which continue to make progress on so we really because we have to because we have no choice. We said we're going to have to try and do this. Study using video conferencing facilities uniform all of our house. Oh that was the starting point Rayleigh so we assess it up. We use Microsoft teams without taking a review. Have you set the bit so of this video conferencing software sense and I think we will presently surprise as to how well it went? So that's the main thing really. I will just shy with you today. So tell us a little bit more. About what all goes into this sort of risk assessment that you do because I'm trying to wrap my arms around things that I would think that you needed to see physically to do your risk assessment. And how you can do that. You know online yet remotely absolutely well. This particular on that we were doing was for a project so there was an a physical asset outside the door for us to go. Look at like the in some cases and I'll maybe come back to that but this in order to do these risk assessments these hostilities. What we're doing is a line by line. Study of the proposed Saying what could go wrong on assessing the has it saw. I'm weather's measures. The of being included in the in. The project plan are adequate so traditionally face to face. We don't be sat around the table in a room. We have Never Technical Scribe recording the study on a laptop that's projected on the screen at the end of the room so the body of team could see what's being recorded. We'll sit US typically with laptops in front of us but surrounded by paper so surrounded by Peon idea drawings on paper and other wrestling's documents so this is one of the things that when we went to doing online meetings. How reaction actually manage to do that. What we found that works is the if you have access at home to two screams than you can use these documents on a second scream and still be able to say on the main screen. What the SKYPE is recording? So it's almost like your main screen becomes what would normally be projected on the wall or on the television at the end of the century. And you've got access to these documents. Onscreen and the video conferencing facilities named the as the leader unfold with all the team members on electoral tiles. Effectively on your screen. You can see the video of faith nobody so in terms of facilitating the meeting running the maintain. You can see when somebody wants to speak insane when somebody's getting annoyed about something whether they disagree about something that somebody else assigning on that it doesn't completely replace body language communication that you have when you face to face in the meeting room but we can't get it to work so you say you can tell when somebody is annoyed. How do you do that? He can tell you can tell you can see them on the video feed so you do pick up some body language you do you do. I think the main was going to say the disadvantage of all the things that I think so surprised most of us were doing is how tiring as an I think because the levels of concentration they have to have a society screen all the time and making sure that everybody's managed to contribute tributes. Meeting is a lot more tiring we found the just taking regular grades quite social writes a regular bright to delete the of course you talk about it being a little more tiring. Everybody who's listening to this right now. I suppose is working for home or even if they're back at their office by the time they listen to this they've been working from home for. I'm losing track time now but it's been a few weeks one of the things that. I've talked to several people. My wife included in fact. When I tell you you know when I think of England I think London in. She's she's actually the only successful on family so she's an international insurance broker so she goes.
ABB to sell Power Grids to Hitachi, revamp business structure
"Top of the hour that Hitachi is bein ABC's power grits units. What do we know about the deal? Well, we know that she will buy it will acquire eighty point one percent of that power grids division. This is a deal that values that entire power business at about eleven billion dollars you as you said, we just got news on that. And it seems like when we look on the face of this seems like the deal does a bit to satisfy the needs of both companies on one hand, it seems to bolts pollster Hitachi's aims of diversifying away from nuclear and becoming more dominant in the overall power grid for a BB. It means the company will be. I'll have room to return. Proceeds of as much as seven point eight billion dollars via share buybacks and some other measures. And it also this is the development that may appease the longtime demands of one of the activist shareholders savvy on capitol which had wanted the company to divest of this business. So yeah. And I'm sure we'll get more or less as a day developed, and it will be very interesting. How interesting to see how the market
