Coronavirus: US passes grim milestone of 200,000 deaths

"The United States today reached a staggering unwanted milestone. 200,000 American lives lost to cope in 19 to break that down in another way that's like having the entire populations of Bellevue and Lacey Washington wiped off the map in the past seven months. ABC is Mark Hamill are joining us on the camo news line. With more on today's grim numbers. Mark, How did we get here? Well, there's a number of factors that has led the U. S. 200,000 dead. But I think many health experts would really point to three major causes that has led us to a country with 5% of the world's population. Tohave 21% of the world confirmed death from Kobe 19 and one of those things inadequate access to healthcare there 30 million uninsured people in this country. And that has particularly as we know Kobe 19 has disproportionately affected my minority communities, low income communities, and so that's largely or likely part of an axis. Inadequate access to healthcare Co morbidity, the CDC says. Six in 10, Americans have a chronic health condition. While we know the covert 19 is particularly worrisome if you have a chronic health condition, like diabetes or something else like that on Europe, more more of a risk of developing a severe complications. And then the final thing is America's. Inability to respond appropriately to be outbreak going back all the way to January and step you area, Trump said. The US back in February was the most prepared country in the world, and we were the US topped a number of lives in terms of preparedness for an outbreak in terms of our state of the art labs, heir stockpile our disease tracers, things like that. But we were caught off guard. No doubt by the fact that this spread with a symptomatically there were cases of people We didn't even know they were getting it from there. The slow adoption of lock down orders Airport tracing things like that screening testing being still inadequate even today, compared to what Admiral Brett, your law has said he wanted to see 50 million tests done a month by September will last month. We only did 24 million. So only halfway there, so there's a lot of factors and then I think one of the other one that continues to get mentioned mixed messaging from the White House and the CDC, particularly early on, they said. People don't need to wear that. Well, then they had to change that later that people should, and so I think that's all helped contribute to the fact that them and help get us to the fact that we have now

Roku and Peacock made nice. Will HBO Max and Fire TV follow suit?

"So going into last week, what was the status quo of the standoff between Hbo Max Peacock on the Streamer side and then Roku and fire TV on the devices I'd. So it was a rollback to May, which was when if you're Max launched was surprise honestly all of us that HP the Roku Fire TV, we're not going to have the HBO AD and. That's still the case today You know it's been said launch. Max's not been on either of those two devices against super popular like you said, Roku TV, they're really the least expensive streamers out there and you could you know so many people have them on TV's on on the street devices themselves. So and then peacock which debuted nationwide in July also didn't have HBO Max and didn't have. Sorry. Didn't have a Roku or fire TV. So again both those major services both you know had a lot of hype leading up to them in both kind of like. You know they're not on these super popular devices. So last Friday that changed and Roku peacocks deal. So finally, Roku owners can watch peacock just like everybody else right. So what are the I'm sure that you it's been similar for you like me I've even people that work at c net with us have message to me occasionally and been like w why can't I watch the streaming service? On my Roku or on fire, you have you been getting a lot of reader reaction to the fact that. We had readers were really like I think a lot of years that are in the know are Kinda like at this point like they're they're they're they. They know that it's an issue in the they do complain about especially when they hear about new stuff on on either service potentially but we had a discussion internally about the editor's choice award, which is something that we give to products. We really like currently our editor's choice product is a roku streaming stare. and. We're like is worth polling this this this award, you know give them a little bit of time still especially going into the fall season, but you know it's a big issue offer us evaluating these products so yet again it was it was a surprise. People are still kind of mystify that these massive services from the media companies they can't agree to deal to just get the basic APP on their devices. So also, can you talk a little bit about? What are people missing out on Hbo Max Peacock in addition to being new services especially with Max been a little confusing for people to understand any way. It doesn't help if you can't watch these services on like the most popular things that people watch the but give people sense. You know what are they missing out on if they are Roku or fire TV users, what are they missing by not having a up until last week not having access to both HBO Maxine PGA While I. Think Big Picture. You're missing more on peacock the Max at least in the beginning because. If. You're a Roku or a fire TV user. You can get the regular HBO APP still. So you can watch you know all the shows that are on HBO succession, which just one. In the EMMYS did really well, all those hbo things there on both Max and regular HBO. The things that you're missing on MACs are primarily friends which obviously is is the big marquee feature there and those Hbo, Max. Originals. So that's on there. If you're if you're Roku or five TV subscriber, you can't watch those my kids really like the elmo show on for example. Like he gets up at elmo goes and does a late night show. It's called the not. So late show with ELMO and You know we watch that on our apple TV you know the one time we don't use Roku our house right off because you can't you can't watch it on the Roku. With peacock I think their catalog is a is a little bit less compelling overall You know it's a less expensive service. It's free. But. Again, you're missing a lot of their back catalogue ABC has or NBC. Sorry NBC shows. law and order Svu as well as a parks and recreation thirty rock big names like that. You can stream on peacock and you can't get those on other services however for example, those are both of those comedies thirty rock in. Parts of the wreck are on Hulu. Hulu Subscriber, obviously, you got Hulu APP on your fire TV or Roku. So you're not missing quite as much I think if you're a again a Roku Amazon Rtd user with peacock. So you know it's it's it's it's very complicated, and then these services have different tiers right so at the end of the day, it's it's hard to Parse it all and you can get a Lotta these shows on different services. If you look around

TV Ratings: Emmy Awards Drop to All-Time Low 6.1 Million Viewers

"The 2020 Emmys thatjust happened on Saturday night. The ratings were not great. Although people did say that they enjoyed the show, a lot of people watched online and So they got about 6.1 million viewers, and I think they average usually for that show 11 12 million viewers on the night that it airs. It is one of the bigger award shows. Actually, I always think of it as being kind of the Oscars. The Emmys. The Grammy's are the only ones I Really care about the I completely forgot that it was on to the extent that I was shocked when I saw That every there's Yeah, like I went. Oh, my God. That happened. And I'm supposed to know that And I didn't. I didn't. I just So I can see. Look, I've been listening to people on the sports talk or would ever talk about how ratings air down for for and and all I can think of When I hear first of all here, a sportscaster bitching about the ratings or something, I think, dude. We didn't have sports for months now, all of a sudden you're back in this taken for taken it for granted thing, like, be glad you have something to talk about The idea that your bitching about the ratings being down, I think ratings they're going to be weird to follow in every Avenue, every lace and it's just a matter of do you want to keep Consistency in place for when things go back to normal, or do you just want to have nothing on It's up to you, You know, I mean, I really right. I'm glad their stuff to watch. Thank God there's football. I don't know the thing about the this ahh 72nd Emmy awards, drawing 6.1 million viewers. I actually sort of blame ABC, because while I was aware that they were happening Because I knew that the creative Emmys were happening last week like I had been watching so many stuff coming up, so I knew those were the precursor. I didn't see any advertisement for this nun on Social media. Not not any on TV. Not that I'm watching. Like network TV all the time. I just think Less fewer and fewer people are actually sitting down and watching network TV. So fewer and fewer people know what's actually happening on the thief on the 34 big broadcast networks, So I'm not super surprised by this actually way more people watched it on Online in some form or other And that's the other thing. I think ah is causing of a knish you for ratings is that I don't know that someone watching on I keep going back to the NFL, but it's another big ratings. Boom. You know, I mean, they're a lock their the number one TV show every time footballs on it wins. But people are watching on their phones and on their pads and there, you know, you say, Well, why would you? I can't explain what young people do, and an old people couldn't explain what I used to do. That's just the way that's youth. You can't explain it, but they watch on their phone and until that that way that account ratings that's going to go unaccounted for. Right? Well, it's not, and I have gone accounted right that may have gone unaccounted for. For the grant the Emmys as well. You're actually saying that, um, about 11.9 million Total social interactions happened on the on the show for Sunday night. And they say that's up over 100% from the 2019 Emmys. So I just think people don't sit down and watch TV the way they used to, and TV if you want to survive, has got to figure out a way to make that work for them on the other screens that are available to all of us.

Or what did they do better than everyone else does. Now probably the laid out what careers careers could look like they gave me a mentor who listen to me and they give me a manager who listen to me and told me what i could expect given different paths and that was at the net server division. If i recall yeah cupertino site so after after school you took a full-time job. They're doing squad during school fulltime so you went from basically junior summer was when you've started fulltime or started working in the place that you ended up working ended. Did you have any other choices at that point or was that okay i did the internship and this was great and i'm just cler gave me an offer all just keep working here. I had choices with to go to different internships junior year but once i started working at h._p. And was happy so i didn't have the reason to anywhere else <hes>. I don't even think i interviewed that much senior year <hes> i did have another part time job <hes> doing in chemistry databases that was pretty fun and he mentioned that he we keep me round but i didn't wanna stay clam or right for so i don't wanna go into long that job for job and everything but that was pretty normal development server stuff it was on a._b._c.'s. It wasn't what you traditionally called better. Try your first job was was doing a better job. There were drivers. I've written drivers for every operating system to write ever and <hes> and then as the network server started to get more hardware put on them to monitor them temperature sensors and whatnot. I was interested in that so sorta. Prepare yourself took. Did you break anything in that job. I don't think i broke big things in that job. Okay so let's move on the next job was still at h._p. Or was it it was still h._p. At that time tony is transferred into a inside h._p. To h._p. Bioscience doing something much more better. Yes the manager for that job asked me a bunch of questions about signal processing which i did find on and he talked to my boss and all these people who said yeah she can coat and and then he took me over and taught me embedded systems it was like i didn't even know there was a word for it but he said well. You're gonna do motor controllers and you're going to real time systems and you're going to do all the stuff. It's gonna be really fun and he was right. What was the product <hes>. We did a d._n._a. Scanner so you you do some wet chemistry and then you put the d._n._a. Onto a slide after has <hes> connected with phosphorescent chemicals and then you scan the slide <hes> very carefully and you look where it lights up and then that indicates which part of the d._n._a. works so if you're looking for a particular gene then you you create the phosphorescent side that you can then combine with the person's d._n._a. And then you scan it and then you can say oh if it liked up. You have that gene if you don't. That's pretty cool for junior his job up. I was a few years out of school and it was very cool and it was at h._p. Labs so the bioscience department was in the process was spinning off but we you were still at labs and so hung out with people who worked there and it was really fun. So which parts did you work on specifically <hes> we we will we did <hes> where we moved the slide back and forth and i worked on the p. I d ever done a <hes> code to drive the motors cool. <hes> and i also worked on peace off piece also is an operating system back in real time operating system and and i worked with the software engineers to get good <hes> a._p._i.'s. It was a really fun job. I mean it was a really really good job. What happened h._p..

Say call me middle aged today thirty one you know be like you're just a middle aged woman with not on bumble by the way sorry light on the street it was it was it was on instagram and i you know because you get controls the misogynist something that i'm real familiar with oh yeah well i mean because we're changing the dynamics and that shifting things in a way that's threatening. I think that what you have to do and obviously that's not personal. I don't know that person <hes> but when it somebody that you've gone on a date with were spent time with and you decide that it it's not working out for you. I think that what's so important is to remember that where people come from where that reduction action comes from as a place of such deep hurt has typically nothing to do with you. You're just ending up inadvertently validating someone else's feelings of inadequacy and that's not on you that unbend that's their own fault and so a lot of what they reach back out with these personal attacks are really just projections of their their own fears failures and shortcomings onto you so i think that it's one of those things that as much as it hurts in the moment realizing that where they're coming from such a deep sense of pain gene that's not your responsibility and creating that boundary for yourself is really important and i think that's the easiest way to handle a situation like that. I would also say i am a big believer and and i've done both i've go ahead. I'm guilty of it. I would be lying if i were sitting here. Being like ghosting is very bad. Don't do accent in the past but i think that giving someone the the just common courtesy and respect to say i am not an i'm focused on myself right now. I'm not interested in dating or whatever it is like some sort of short answer that makes them feel like there's some sort of closure <hes>. I think it's always important respectable date anguish because the internet we're able. I think that people it are able to switch gears and avoid so easily that it's a lot easier to just not say anything to disappear on somebody but i think that the damage that it does has to each of us is a lot more. I'm a big believer that each person has their own feelings of of of that. They're not enough and it's it's if we he can do whatever we can to prevent people from feeling that way then we're putting good back into the world and i do feel like as i'm getting older and doing more you were on myself dating. He was just an extraordinary broadcaster from all accounts and i never had the pleasure of meeting the man but from all accounts just a really really nice guy never afraid to mentor people who were perpaps preparing to take his job and has released a statement talking about has how his on air presence and humanity were unmatched like i said had did know the man but his range as a broadcaster is something that's hit. "Once again. episode of the series your thoughts on both those series the one on c._b._s. All access which is coming out and the one she was part of with elementary. That's going by by. I would think it's like it's a different because was there is a little bit of a difference because one is streaming in can easily do less episodes in one is a broadcast best show. It used to get like over twenty episodes per season for elementary. She still making big bucks from it now on with why women kill with a lower subscriber base than net flicks or who we were amazon prime. That's gonna probably last asked a little bit not as long as elementary has and she's gone on the record. She likes the ten episode format allows her to spend more time with her family and that's good but also this could be a precursor to even more interesting formats and the way the c._p._s. and viacom now that they're one big happy family again after their merger ren off sorry reunification is the word that they're using that they've come back together and are now looking to go ahead head start franchising some things out and start promoting things that could be something that they look towards to the c._b._s. All access which has been a great surprise overall <unk> streaming no. It's not quite netflix. No it's not quite amazon prime but they do have very good numbers very promising numbers. I know there's talk about the star trek universe universe being something that they wanna go ahead now that viacom and c._b._s. have now been joined back together. That's something they want us. Promote even stronger. I i know that they've tried to start comparing it or at least the press is anyways trying to compare it to the marvel universe the d._v._d. Universe will hold your horses. You're not there yet was weighed. See what goes on but that could be a cornerstone as far as what's going on. You know with all the stuff that they're doing all the success stories that they have on c._b._s. All axis soc- could be seeing a bigger emphasis on that in the near future because of the reunification but there's a lot of stuff that we want to recap when it comes to summer programming thing with the broadcast networks that are out there all right. I want to hear your thoughts on what was hot with a._b._c. This summer what really worked worked when it comes to a._b._c. I think overall and it should be no surprise. It's the bachelor universe and social media and and the controversy and everything else and our marketing. It's pretty much what kept the whites on for the most part at a._b._c. a._b._c. Starting with the bachelorette and now we're going into the bachelor in paradise which is pretty much the little sister of the bachelorette and the bachelorette actually pretty much rose in the ratings whereas bachelor in paradise is steady so that was what was was hot on a._b._c. They seem to put a bigger emphasis than other networks. I'm not gonna say all the numbers but they put a bigger emphasis on our programming during the course of summer i i like that holy moly another something that also has been talked about whether good or bad whatnot. We'll talk about here in a little bit but when it comes to what what was hot with our friends at c._b._s. I want to hear your thoughts once again. It is reality programming coming to a head at what's hot at another network big brother despite declining ratings. It still ended up being like when the top rated shows four c._b._s. If not the top radio show for c._b._s. And it's also garnering a lot of controversy on social media as it always does every single year especially with the live life themes and everything else that goes on on twitter and that's something that a lot of people will be looking forward to again next summer when big brother. It's like clockwork when it comes out each and every year to c._b._s. Now we've talked about what's gone on with a._b._c. talked about c._v._s. Ask what was good with them on a talk about n._b._c. right now before we go into fox so we've been going in that order as far as last week on our fall tv preview so i know with n._b._c. You know you wanna talk about a lot of good things that were there but i don't think you can talk about what's hot without talking about american ninja warrior her even know it's like american ninja where it's still pretty solid though the everything is lake this past summer season has been in fractional territory outside of america's got talent in all the ratings so far have gone down so so i couldn't pick a clear favourite on what was hot besides aging t so even though american ninja warrior has been winning the ratings as far as on many days in in the past few weeks. It is still down overall from last year. Is that correct. It's not even hitting. One point is regularly as it did last season and that's because the whole network is down in even a._d._t. Is down so there's no clear favourite. That's very interesting. Okay okay well again. Not all these broadcasts networks put the same emphasis on their summer programming looks like n._b._c. Even tant some assault hits like you said with america's got talent and also american ninja warrior. It seems like they are not actually putting enough into it so maybe they'll have to refocus. Go ahead and and look towards next year or next summer as far as putting out some better programming or revamping is some of its more popular television shows now with our good friends at a._b._c. c._b._s. and n._b._c. dan you gotta talk about what's going on with fox. How do they do the summer. As far ars was hot for them. What really worked prior to the ratings coming out. I said that the clear favourite hit they focused focused on their promotion on beverly hills none or to winnow the pseudo reboot donna dan than it keeps are doing the theme song but go ahead go ahead and then it premiered on like a one point five in just as the ratings came out. It's at point nine but it didn't reise in the half hour from appoint nines like a one point out like eight thirty so you gotta see if the ratings things are back again. That's a nostalgic thing and when it concerns a nostalgic thing a lot of people will have an initial interest in and then it just drops from there so you and i've seen this before with many shows where it peaks high at the start and just has a tendency to be going down going down as people lose interest in the nostalgia aged thing ends so you're right. This is something you're going to have to keep an eye on at the tv. Ratings guide dot com if it will go ahead long-term. It'd be something the network can rely upon but there is some type of nostalgia. I think that's gonna stay there in this specific case how long it's going to stay there. I can't tell for sure but i think you're right. You've already seen already with the people that okay. I wanted to check out one episode and i'm done you saw a lot of that but can it hold zero point eight zero point nine or even one point. Oh in the near future. I'm sure you and the folks at the tv ratings guide dot com. We'll keep everyone updated on on that so you you talked about a._b._c. n._b._c. c._b._s. fox of what was hot and what worked for them over the course of the summer. I do wanna hear your thoughts with our good friends at the c._w. You never want to go ahead and shut them out entirely because there are some things that they put on over the summer that does work for them. It was.

You're looking at the broad categories of like what's working what directionally should we be investing more in and then drilling deep into the individual initiatives fest writer driving the most impact so. I think that that's great yeah the advice advice that is for other companies to just start track everything you can have disciplined with those weekly funnel meetings and when you're reviewing your data data break it down into the different categories so that you're going to complete pitcher that's right. It's an improvement and good for you and I tried to shit on thing. It's just a weird well going exactly it's not a negative is just like okay. It's GonNa be interesting to see she how retailers deal with their existing switch inventory and how they're going to maybe discount those switches which have less battery life in favor of these new switches. It'd be Shittier if they didn't and they tried to like 'cause technically this thing is called the same thing and only informed consumers are going to have any understanding that they're different. No I don't know how this works but can you know she attended by yeah those back from the retailers or I don't know how that whole process goes by until consoles they sure but then they would have to they would have a whole bunch of inventory that they would be holding today. Do with those right yeah <hes> so I feel like I feel like the less morally inclined retailers will just put on the shelves right next to the other ones and try and move them all the same yes. It could be actually a really bad. That's the exact same price. It's kind of like well yeah yeah so maybe they'll have discounts right before this comes out. Maybe they've stopped already purchasing inventory. I duNNo. I don't manage a retail store right now but there are things that hopefully they have been doing to make sure that they aren't just royally fucking everyone over well.
