"The actual federal income tax they would owe on the sale of stock you have a resulting tax rate of 302 let me repeat that is a tax rate of and two percent let's do a quick review they sold the stock for a thousand dollar income game that triggered fifteen percent for long -term capital gains they had an additional three point eight percent tax for the net investment income for for high earners that's around eighteen point eight or let's call it twenty percent the extra income from the stock sale triggered new IRMAA tiers the total IRMAA skyrockets surcharge so the thousand dollar extra income triggers taxes real taxes plus increase costs of about three thousand twenty two dollars in this particular example with leaving out all of the details that's a 302 percent real tax rate so you see being pushed into a higher medicare part B and D premium range is worse then being pushed into a higher tax bracket that's because if you go over a regular tax bracket by even a single dollar only those last dollars are taxed at the highest rate but if you go over medicare part B and D income levels by even a single dollar you move into the next premium B .M. tier it doesn't matter if you exceed the limit by one dollar or ten thousand dollars this is this is what they call the IRMAA cliff and it is real remember also to enroll in medicare at the right time because if you bungle it you will be hit with a lifelong penalty in the form of in crease peering premiums and again that is for while we've seen how social security and medicare have their own tax traps and unique rules and now one way to help you manage your income both before and during retirement is to utilize Roth IRA conversions now a Roth IRA conversion is a simple process it allows you to move money from a pre bracket for a married couple filing joint goes from about $49 thousand 451 to 190 ,750 if you file a joint return and your taxable income is a hundred thousand that means that you could add another 90 ,000 of income without outgoing into the next tax bracket making a Roth IRA conversion like that could make make sense for you now if you plan to convert a large IRA this approach is often more more tax efficient than converting the full amount in one year instead you can make smaller Roth IRA conversions versions over a number of years filling up your tax bracket each time this can help to reduce the average tax rate you will pay on your converted money and also spreads the tax bill out over a longer period of time some tactics you can use in managing income around tax brackets might include one withdrawing tax -free money from life insurance policies to keep income low to selling highly appreciated stock for low or no capital gains three taking distributions from IRAs or 401ks to take advantage of a lower tax rate and as just discussed you can also consider partial Roth conversions to fill up lower tax brackets there are also two other pre -retirement strategies to consider but they don't apply to all people one has to do with how you use health savings accounts as HSAs and this would apply to people who are covered by a high the health plan second has to do with small business owners those who want to be extra tax saving for retirement can fund a company pension plan for which certain high earning business business owners can increase their ability to claim a qualified business income deduction both of these features of the tax code can be used to manage your tax exposure and provide significant tax favored benefits throughout the tire throughout "Only ten to twenty percent of that was insured so the insured losses were about five hundred million to a billion is very early to look at this but I think we're looking at things in a similar ballpark so there's gonna be a lot of uninsured homes in there I'm shocked as you told me in our earlier discussion most people don't have flood insurance most people do not have flood insurance about two percent of the people in California have flood insurance nationwide about thirty percent of the people in flood -prone regions have flood insurance it's dislocation it's like we're not used to having floods therefore they have earthquake insurance insurance but not flood insurance? So if you're in a flood zone and you have a mortgage you'd need to have flood insurance but a lot of people that the flood zone maps are very old they were written in the 1960s and 70s so they're not reflective of the actual flood risk so a lot of people in flood -prone regions don't have to have it and it's expensive so they just don't buy it. Alright so this year is it shaping up to be an average year for insurable losses from all of these issues above average less than average where we are so far? About halfway through we're about a little above average and we haven't had a real big event believe it or not so we've had these kind of crazy things but nothing has been dramatic last year Ian hurricane was like 50 billion dollars of insured losses we might be at that level just now halfway so if we had another Ian sized event it could be a record year. So how is this going to wind up affecting the insurance industry in that they're going to have to come up with different kind of policies or do the premiums wind up going up because at some point somebody pays so if they're only like on the hook for ten percent of the five to seven billion dollars you're talking about someone's paying for that? Alex you're hitting on a great point right there there's a protection gap so there there are things that are not insured a lot of this flood risk is going to go uninsured some of it's going to fall on the federal government which ensures a lot of the flood risk the insurance industry has an appetite for some of these things but it's limited so I don't think you're going to see new policies I think a silver lining of all of these crazy events is it might raise awareness so people might understand that they need the existing products I don't think there's going to be new products but there could be an increase in demand having spoken to you over the years and reading your research what comes back to me is a lot take Florida for example taxpayers insure Florida don't they yes like New York taxpayers insure Florida residents well to some degree so what's happening in states like Florida and California there's a state fund so if you can't get insurance from a private insurance company you get it from the state fund insurance companies won't go into those states and the reason they won't go into those states is because they're always having natural disasters because they build they build all these homes either right on the the ocean or on a cliff in California that'll be right next to a fire yes so that's what's happening part of it though is it's catastrophe prone but also in these states particularly Florida and California the regulatory body is not is great so that scares the insurers away a little bit a lot of fraud in Florida scared yeah if you can believe it there's a lot of fraud insurance fraud in Florida the state has worked on it and we're waiting to see if that stuff pans out but that's also keeping insurers away so you've got three big things keeping insurers away which leads to these state funds so they're run by the state not the federal government so it's not necessarily New York in terms of flood that is a federal program so you might be paying for someone else's flood but like we were saying the flood rates are not foot take -up rates are not high anyway what could could reinsurers help now we're talking this is my favorite part get into florida like for example ears perked up so uh the reinsurers were actually the reason that insurers were leaving florida so reinsurance was becoming uh too expensive the reinsurers were the first ones to put their feet down and say look we just we can't we can deal with natural disasters we can't deal with this rampant fraud so they put their foot down and then when the primary insurers couldn't get reinsurance then they couldn't operate so you had a few of them going insolvent so the reinsurers could technically help but they just won't i mean the prices for insurance have been going up dramatically so reinsurance capacity is coming back nationwide so that will be a positive factor over time boy it's just we're towards the end of august here and we really haven't had a big hurricane like florida texas i know i know i know bite your tongue paul there was a lot going on in the atlantic all we have i mean we had for the first time in maybe thirty years of natural still uh... a tropical storm california hitting so uh... we made up for it with the lack of activity in there was the lannock a bunch there was of things going on there's that there's some stuff cooking there now uh... so we're not in the peak of hurricane season using it's coming those are but i think also my issue is that as the climate changes certain things developed that were not prepped for even saying basic like the maui wildfires right like just the fact that things are really dry and maybe there's a power line that didn't work so well and toppled over i'm not saying that's definitive i'm saying what if how hard is it to insure against things that are possible so great point i think it's it is difficult right uh... i read a statistic that over the past century wildfires in hawaii have increased four hundred percent and uh... part of that those is a human problem where uh... apparently people brought a non non -native species of grass into hawaii which is really prone to fire it's climate change it's human intervention to other things driving the companies are uh... property values which have been going up dramatically over time and the density like poll or you're talking about people are living in these catastrophe prone regions i think the industry is is well suited they can deal with the rest getting into these these things that the unknown unknowns uh... are kind of the issue we're kind of something like a cyber comes into to play there but they're good at all right matt really really interesting to know that the grass is going to stay with me for a while matt liz metals and mining analyst grant spore alright grant tell us what this move towards renewable energy means for copper copper has a demand forces that are sort of pushing and pulling it and on the on the negative side which is obviously honoring a lot of the headlines at the moment is china's sort of maturing urbanization and industrialization trend which i guess is playing out through the country through the country's property market malaise but on the flip side and this is where the you know the real positive comes in is is renewables and and the ev transition so both of those probably have the have the the heft to overcome the negatives that we've seen in china at the moment and maybe not every year and there may be periods where there is some some temporary weakness but certainly over the you know over the decade renewables and particularly the power build out where both solar and wind are much more copper intensive than your regular power build out could really sort of support copper demand at or maybe even slightly above trend before you get to the pricing of it give me some perspective as to how much we are under supplied longer term when it comes to copper in terms of the demand usage and the actual supply there's a number of ways of slicing and dicing and then you you know it depends on on a number of moving parts but it took to put it simply the the sort of the copper mining industry certainly on our calculations has to deliver another two and a half million tons of mine supply by the end of the decade otherwise we are going to see some some shortages and I guess the point here is they've got to get going quite soon to to getting those proofed because of the lag between when you actually start something and deliver it so that's the best that way I can put it there are obviously other forces that can come into play such as recycling etc but that's the key number we really look at it's about two and a half million tons if the industry doesn't deliver. "Dan thanks thanks very much the time sixteen minutes here before the top of the hour we welcome to our studios jasmine doan asia senior investment strategist at rbc wealth management jasmine thank you so much for coming into our studios once again so markets seem to be pricing in a soft landing here particularly for of the the u s economy and that could feed through to the global economy without a lot more pain in bringing inflation under control yet you're still cautious you're still overweight fixed income why well right now at rbc wealth management we have a neutral stand on equities with and defensive buyers because right now we think the market has rallied quite a bit actually for the big tech big tech names and valuation has gone up to around twenty percent uh... for payee so uh... in the summer season we might see some uh... could back and all correction for the tech sector so we want to be uh... cautious here so twenty times earnings for let's say the s and p five hundred uh... uh... is historically a little high but then a lot of that is baked into those magnificence seven once you strip those out the ease drop down uh... significantly are there some other options in their some other alternatives that you might uh... find some interest in yes so right now we have an overweight on on the health care sector because historically when we see a market pullback or entering into a action to help health care said to do provides investors with more protection or a option uh... in this environment so on in and and also uh... even though the fed is coming to an end of the rate high cycle uh... the credit cycle is still remain relatively tight so we want to steal remain defensive at this moment okay let's talk a little bit about china we have so so much ground to cover on just in five minutes uh... in china that we have the story from yesterday the p b o c chief pangong sheng met with developers which in itself seems a little unusual and also promised still a lot of funding support for not only developers but for others in the private sector uh... and it is to just another sort of step in trying to do more are they doing enough and will it work well first of all it is very encouraging that the central government and different industries are sending a very strong supporting signal but we think right now it is really a show me story vessels want to see more concrete measures and also more importantly want to see the economic data to improve and right now we think most investors are still trading China as a tactical trade they are still hesitant to deploy money into the market so and also investors are paying attention to longer term structural for example demographic the local government that issue industrial upgrade so all this could take take longer time to take effect and to play out we know that people are concerned about American and other Western companies diversifying out of China and to a certain degree that can impact confidence how do you see confidence at the moment for both businesses in China well we will say right now the confidence is still relatively you fragile because in the past three years we have some policy changes and we have continuous lockdown so it takes some time for both the corporates and consumers to review their and also we have talked a lot about the supply chain diversification that concerns some investors but on that front we think the situation is more complex and less pessimistic than news headline portray are there some high yield plays not not high yield bonds but are some there high dividend yield companies that attract you in China and Hong Kong or China markets yes so indeed right now in China market we think there are some sectors we and like one of them is the high dividend yield place especially under the SOE themes because we think investors may still need to wait for a while to see a very sustainable rally and in this market environment it would be good to hold some high dividend yield that could provide some downside protection and also yield income and telecom sector would be one of the sectors that that is attractive yet China mobile I guess is among them there's been some consolidation in that industry but it doesn't really matter who they're all paying pretty high yield right? yes indeed and especially in this year the telecom companies are doing better in their corporate governance and also in terms of that their communication to the capital market so we think that would be a big change and provide in terms of providing more clarity to investors so is that what a lot of people are looking for cash flow? from florida who had the stroke uh... with the medicare advantage plan which really brought it here to my eyes because i'm a nurse here i'm actually hospital here in new york and what it sounds like to me she's trying to get into acute rehab which is a rehab you have to be able to do three hours a day which is p t o t and speech have to meet that criteria now definitely if she has a medicare advantage or just a regular managed care plan they're not going to approve it if she can't do the three hours now if she had straight i medicare believe don't quote me a hundred percent but i think she'd have a better chance of getting in there well i thought she said she wanted to get into a facility a rehab facility next that's well that's the next step if you don't meet criteria for the three hours so this is what happens here in our hospitals the next step is subacute rehab when you get about an hour a day so there's a big difference between acute and subacute so what i was going to recommend for her to do or anybody listening call 1 800 medicare to me she should be able to switch at some point um and she also the the other option and i'm going to tell you some of the resources we have here and to share with your listeners in new york city for the five boroughs we have an organization called hi -cap which is health insurance counseling and assistance program 212 -4180 -602 their counselors the free counselors will leave your the name number and they call you back and they advise you and they help you with questions about medicare and these are not people who are medicare science advantage they are unbiased they are absolutely not they work for the new york city department for the aging they are absolutely not great now for the rest of the country there's a website called same shiphealth .org thing people there they're unbiased there to help you you you put in your zip code where you live and it's another resource but number one would be calling -800 Medicare and there should be somebody able to help you she's going to have to pick a medicare part d plan when she changes she can do that with the assistance of somebody on the telephone or she can go on to medicare .gov you may know this as well you search the website for health open drug plan you put your zip code in you put in your medicare drug plan they're looking for part d and then you put in your medications and it'll come up with a bunch of different plans and what the costs are going to be right now here in new york the average deductible with a part d plan is 505 dollars so you're automatically going to get that which is a lot of money and then of course you've got the medic the medigap plan so it does tend to add up when you do have medicare i think it's a better option and it's also you know than having a advantage medicare and if you've been on medicare advantage for more than a year it can be very difficult to change back and get a plan because the medigap providers it may actually be but let let her try yeah absolutely try it and see what happens i i agree but my heart goes out to her and i wanted to call i work with a lot of resources this is what i do yeah i'm a nurse by the way and i work in new york and actually i'm a city nurse yeah and they are trying to i think i told you before are they trying to force the new york city retirees to go into the etna ppo medicare advantage plan and we are fighting that by the way we're fighting that we're getting a lawsuit yeah that's that's crazy yeah this said for people who don't know what we're talking about elizabeth we had a woman call in in the last hour was who was speaking with a slight slur to her voice and she apologized for that she said pardon you know i'm sorry for the for the my voice but but i just had a stroke and i can't swallow i can't use my left arm and i have and i'm having a hard time speaking and she said but the problem is i'm in the hospital right now and they're about to discharge me and i want to go into a where facility i can get a rehabilitation treatment for the stroke and my medicare advantage plan is refusing to pay for the telling me they will not pay for it and i can't get uh... in a rehabilitation services and and then she started crying i mean i i i started crying when i heard i was crying myself on the other end listening to this i really think she's trying to get into acute rehab like i said which is a three hour intensive therapy three hours we have it here you have to meet criteria for your insurance again to for pay it the next step is subacute they're probably going to pay for her to go to subacute because it's maybe about an hour a You day. made that point. i'd almost touched it and then a security guard jumped in and grab me i'm not even exaggerating we're in the speed of theater in the atrium and thirty five hundred dollars three thousand four hundred ninety nine u s those people size start shipping early twenty twenty four you know the thing that jumps out straightaway guys the which the gray cable the runs from the actual mixed reality head that the external battery pack external battery source that was what really jumped out of me at first it seems like you're saying jumped out in a negative way so think about that in the context of the of the next question it it it seems to look a little better than some of the other a goggle like uh... where they have seen uh... uh... does it have that visual appeal does it also look a bit like you can dive in so as i i've got a piece coming on on bloomberg dot com in the tunnel that discusses this exact point i would describe it as being a small form factor if you're a glasses wearer for example there's not even space within the headset for you to wear glasses so you if are optically challenged apple solution is to have uh... corrective lenses that you put place in with magnets over the inside lens of the visor it is a very small google scar style or diving goggle style headset and you know it has twelve external facing cameras five sensors pointing outwards you can't even detect them within the curvature of the lens it's kind of very discreet form factor but yes it's just it's odd that the battery pack external is you could you know imagine moving around this sort of appendage flailing around that's how i put just it just briefly it seems like access to the app store is a major feature here with this yeah so the the legacy library of ios that's the iphone operating system apps and also all the apps that have been developed for ipad are available the kind of key question for the street is is what's the killer app that's unique to this they demoed you know all kinds of very basic apps the core apps we're to used with the iphone but sort of next generation could be design tools enterprise software microsoft apps are available watching 3d film is one of the core functions of the vision pro remember but this is what apple WWDC is it's a developers conference so they wanted to put it of in front developers and say have at it come up with the next -gen use cases so really ultimately uh... in investors i'd be a bit too skeptical i mean i think it's to uh... tim cook said it's the first apple device that you look at through rather than at out of ten yeah i let me think know if you look at the stock reaction and and it's kinda math this is a sell the news event market and promote telegraphed all of this in his reporting over the last few weeks and months in the technology industry and all those to i spoke you today on site this is a profound moment the consumer technology the most significant development and since the iphone and the way that apple phrases it is this will usher in a new era uh... for spatial computing just like the iphone did for mobile computing that significant what we're talking about and just like you said with having the developers uh... you know being able to have added and to come up with innovations uh... this might be for apple kind of like what the watch was really get iteration after iteration after iteration with improvements all along the way it just takes a while to to the to the end zone yeah and you know i think about this in the scheme of the global technology giant thirty five hundred Tired of robocalls? The FCC is still trying to stop them
"The us about twenty percent of calls to cell phones and forty percent to landlines are robocalls many of them scams and tomorrow is the deadline for voice service providers including some phone companies to show the federal communications commission. What steps. they're taking to stop robocalls. Brad reeves is a professor of computer science at north carolina state university. He said the fcc is telling these companies to be on the lookout for clear signs of fraud for example if your phone company and you have a customer that is sending hundreds of thousands of calls per day but almost none of them get answered. Doesn't necessarily mean you're doing anything illegal but it certainly suspicious and you should be looking into it. So yeah i the fcc has a new system right like technical system that can help weed out the robocalls so the fcc is mandating that all providers either now or within a couple of years implemented set of technical standards called stir and shaken. This is something that changes. How calls are made to add a little token to indicate where the call came from and which provider was responsible for it. So you can think of this kind of like the post office putting a postmark on a stamp. The reason this is important. Is that when you receive a robo call and maybe you call your phone company to complain about it. They have to figure out where that call came from. And before sir shaking it was a laborious process that took days in most cases. Do you think that this is gonna work. I wouldn't bet on it. There are just too many loopholes and ways to bypass the

A Dutch Group May Have a Way to Cut Carbon Emissions
"Un estimates that twenty percent of global carbon emissions come from residential buildings. A dutch organization thinks it might have found a way to drastically cut that number. "I'm a person who really throws myself into. I'm a behavioral scientist now. And so i looked at the research and there was this crazy study. By these two guys chris and fowler and they were actually looking at the obesity epidemic and they were curious does it spread from person to person. I got cold or is it. A percentage of the population like alzheimer's. Right you don't get alzheimer's shook hands with somebody who has alzheimer's and what they found was startling. If you have a friend who's obese your chances increase by forty five percent your friends who don't even know them have a twenty percent increase. Chance and their friends have a five percent increase chant and this kind of effect is true for happiness marriage and divorce trait smoking habits voting habits bitterly. Everything spreads from person to person and so i figured my biggest responsibility for my life would be to not only connect with extraordinary people balloons. It could have really in tact a really meaningful impact on my life but tabs them connect with each other so it spreads further and that was kind of the piffling. The problem is i. frankly didn't come from like when those super connected rich families. My parents are immigrants. And so i had to then figure out how to connect with the people i admired

The Truth About Pandemic Weight Gain
"I've been seeing a lot of reports in the media about how much weight everyone supposedly gained during the pandemic year. And some of these numbers are pretty alarming. One highly regarded source reported an average weight gain of twenty five pounds. Another widely reported survey. Put that number even higher at twenty nine pounds. Meanwhile everyone on social media is bemoaning. The fact that returning to in-person work or school is going to require a whole new wardrobe because they can no longer fasten their so-called hard pants internet memes and jokes aside massive weight gain in a large proportion of the population would have serious implications in the form of increased disease burden risks and disability. Fortunately when you take a closer look at the data the actual situation is not quite as dire or dramatic as news. Reports would suggest one of these reports for example is based on an internet survey conducted by harris poll on behalf of the american psychological association. And contrary to what you may have seen about this in the media the survey did not find that the average person gained twenty nine pounds during the pandemic four in ten of those surveyed actually said that the pandemic did not result in any unwanted weight. Change twenty percent said that they experienced unwanted weight loss as a result of the stress. The remaining forty percent said that the pandemic had led to unwanted weight game and the average reported weight gain in that group was indeed twenty nine pounds but only half of those or twenty percent of all respondents reported gaining more than fifteen pounds. Keep in mind as well that all of these were self reported changes not verified by any actual weight data so it's unclear just how accurate people's reports or recollections
