Part of the reason we do Socrates in the City is, it seems very pointed to me at this time, that we like to ask the big questions, because I have this crazy idea that there are some good answers to the big questions, that it's not bleak and hopeless, and we need to provide a forum where we can talk about that kind of stuff. And I think that in the crazy times in which we live, a little hope wouldn't be a bad thing. That could just be me. But I think having a little hope, a little understanding, that yeah, maybe we have reason to hope. So tonight, Andrew and I will be talking about that a little bit. Now, in case you don't know anything about Andrew Klavan, he's the bald guy here. And Andrew is one of these people, he's tough to sum up. He has something called the Andrew Klavan Show at the Daily Wire podcast, which is, some of you are very familiar with that. But he's most known as an author, as a writer. And I have to say, it's very rare that I have someone here who is a writer known for, how do I put this, for his writing, in the sense that a lot of people have a lot of great ideas and they put it into a book. But to be a great writer and accomplish a literary writer, we had Mark Helprin here a few years ago, who is just at the top of the top, just an amazingly gifted literary writer. I always aspire to that in my books. But Andrew really is that. He, in the book we're gonna be talking about tonight, The Truth and Beauty, he writes so beautifully that it's not just the ideas that are captivating, but it's the writing itself. And I wanna say that because, again, as somebody who aspires to that, it's not easy to do. And he does it very well. Now, I have never been a reader of mystery books or thrillers. But if you are, you're familiar with the Edgar Awards. Anybody here hear of the Edgar Awards? Some of you, they're named, I think, I think they're named after Joan Rivers' husband was Edgar.

"Eliminate a car payment for a while, hey, why not just keep driving that old car as long as it's working? Right, absolutely. And on the automaker side too, we remember the supply chain issues that a lot of automakers went through kind of boosting costs automakers wanted to focus on sort of these more expensive, larger, luxury, high margin vehicles, and now as we're coming out of the pandemic and some of the supply chain shortages have eased, I want to makers have found that they're making a lot of money on those vehicles as well. So maybe the costs aren't coming down as quickly as we anticipated. So a lot of different factors kind of contributing to the sort of general automotive landscape right now in terms of expense. But yeah, certainly kind of tough time to be in the market for a new car. I mean, if you want to look at it as glass half full, right? On one hand, this is almost a testament to how well cars are being made these days compared to the past. There were times when you would only be half joking when you said, hey, I paid off my car or the warranties run out and now it's falling apart. Sure. And it's also worth considering that it's kind of talking to people in the automotive press at the moment. It's hard to find someone who has test driven a new vehicle that is genuinely bad. Bad being defined as won't get you from point a to point B and that was not always the case. Now, of course, we can argue back and forth about sort of long-term quality issues and just preferences in terms of material quality in those sorts of things. But in the core functionality of a car, it is pretty hard to find one that will not get you to your destination. But of course, as we've been talking about, it will cost you. And then there's the challenge for automakers, though, right? They might be selling fewer vehicles as a result as people are keeping more of these cars. That's less revenue for them. Yes, but the other hand is that the service industry, the automotive repair industry is actually kind of anxiously anticipating this or at least kind of excited about this news because of course keeping older cars on the road does require more maintenance does require more repairs. So you can imagine those garages around your hometown probably hearing this news and thinking, oh, I could make a couple extra bucks from this. ABC's Mike to busky with us on the northwest news line. And as northwest news, radios Bill O'Neill, President Biden, honoring the nation's law enforcement as national police suite kicked off today. "I came to the conclusion that all the best investors were always ahead of the curve as far as they put their money where the market was going to go first. Or not first, but eventually it was going to go. Like Amazon, Apple, right? Now, the problem was before I came across Bitcoin, I was looking at all these different investment opportunities. And I came to the conclusion that they were all the exact same. Everything was the exact same. There was nothing special about anything, the only special investment opportunities you could ever get as an American citizen would be something that's behind the accredited investor wall. Because by the time those investments actually get to the public markets, all the values have been captured. So the average American can not actually generate wealth really in any of those regards. Unless you're going to just capture maybe three to 8% per year, nobody in the middle class can really afford to do that unless you're willing to sacrifice ten to 15 years of your life, which if you're going to do that, why what are we even doing? Let's talk about something that's more that's more real and more impactful to the larger population. And that's where Bitcoin comes in. Now, you take Bitcoin and you allow for these guys to be able to save a little bit acquire accumulate resources. Accumulate enough resources to the point where they can start taking some risks and actually try and do something that they value with their day to today life, which could mean starting up your own business or saving up enough to go take on an apprenticeship or something like that because another thing that a lot of people don't know about the trades I grew up in the pipe fitters trade. Sometimes you have to sit on the bench and wait for an opportunity and a partnership school. Like you don't just apply and get in. There's slots that have to be filled. So when it comes to trying to line up your life like this to the point where you're not working some dead end, bullshit job and just beating your head against the wall to earn a couple extra bucks. Like that's not good for the soul and that's not good for your testosterone levels. It's not just that good in general.

"Somebody doesn't have a washer dryer. Needs to get the them. Yeah we actually are taking business from laundromats because some people have used us that use laundromats are saying. Gosh i mean like for a couple extra bucks. Why would i go to the laundromat and spend all that time but most of our customers are not laundromat customers. Most of our customers are people that have a washer and dryer at home. They just don't wanna be bothered right. They want those extra couple of hours. That's what wants extra coupla you bill business and i've heard you talk about this. I was interested in it because someone who is in a family business. You could sit there and say this is the way to go. Everyone should be in a family business. And all that i love it because i do believe things pulled opposite directions because on one end great idea on the other end. It's possibly a terrible idea. Maybe the section than you convey to be in a family business and is your wife and three of your kids right that are in this business and there's probably a lot of good in that and there's probably a lot of all my gosh what we do here and you have a background in. Helping people with their marriage is right and you understand the relationships you understand the dynamics the moving parts the day-to-day. There's so much happening in that. What is it like now. Having a family business with not just one other family member with five total family members four four wheel bin total right. Oh no actually you're right. You do the math right. I don't really clue about my was my wife's idea. Yes which she doesn't really work with us into business on sandwiches reviewing every the right. She's like the one at the very talk about things all the time. She's like a consultant. You yes but anyway. It's a fascinating question you're asking you hit them. Two sides of it in both sides are accurate. And i'll address. Both sides are trying to do it briefly so on the one hand. It's amazing working with my kids. Columbus as kids get older as parents of older kids. No you have to work harder to find ways to stay connected to your kids because they begin to develop their own lives and they're not living at home and the connection is not as easy and natural when you work together you have this ongoing natural connection which creates this natural portal for interaction. And that's wonderful that. Keep me involved with my kids and talking with my kids and and you never stopped parenting in the business. There is like even on the website to the business. My title is dead and ceo and that was intentional. Like i am the ceo. But i also really am. They're dead and they look to me. I think in both those roles in a business setting so it's just very it's like a new shelter in fatherhood and it's very nice and i'm very proud of my children and the roles that they play in the company. Would you be surprised if I told you I don't personally know somebody that did this? But my somebody, my family knows someone who did this. Wow. They get money. It wasn't about money was actually about keeping someone in a relationship with them. Oh, my. Oh, my gosh, That's it. I don't know if that's worse, or just a different kind of crazy. And then when he when the person found out that she was lying about the cancer she about a month later came to him and said she was pregnant. And he didn't believe her. She was just crazy. Oh, she really was pregnant. Oh, yeah. Pregnant. I had someone lie about a dead relative, but that's it. You guys run in some crazy circles. I told you it's It's someone else in my family is not my circle its outer circle. It's the outer layer. So this woman, Katie Lynn Shell, or she's a 22 year old mom. She was arrested on suspicion of death. Deception after she collected at least $15,000 and I've got a tweet here that she put out a family of four. I'm fighting stage four cancer while raising two kids, 13 and 17 months old and trying to survive off one income. We need all the help we can get to stay above water. Cry emoji Crime oci crime. Now. If she were doing that, because let's say she was behind on her rent. Does that change the dynamic at all? As opposed to buying booze and marijuana? Not the money. Okay, You're lying about something that people deal with on a daily basis somebody in their families, a friend who has cancer terminal cancer. Whatever it maybe they're dealing with that struggle. Note. There's no excuse If you're struggling in your life financially find another way, and I know it's easier said than done, but that's not the way to do it. They're homeless veterans living on the street. There's homeless people living on the street. And I mean, they're not making up cancer stories to try and get money. You know, just that's ridiculous. And that's every other week Three hundred dollars Every time he does that. So let's see that's about Almost sixty bucks if he's paying every time and so rather than getting two hundred and ninety dollars his mother's getting two hundred forty dollars more or less every single time. And that's because that's just the way that these used to doing it and so to answer your question terms of what advice i happen. People don't keep doing things the way that you have been doing them. Just because that's what you're used to. I can almost promise you that there's a better way. They haven't You know things that keep them active and unoccupied because you're gonna have a lot more time on your hands, and you want to make sure that that time is Is occupied with something that you really enjoy doing, And that's that's really what's important because you worked hard. Now it's your turn. There was something that you enjoy pick up to do a hobby, You know, do something that you that you want to do? That's that's enjoyable. Even if you make a new hobby, you know? Yeah, you know you may You may be start making furniture. Who knows? It's another. It's a new chapter. In your own Could be I have a client he makes he goes toe to the Home Depot, and he picks up a bunch of pipes and this and that he makes lamps, and it's just It's really interesting to see that some of his white, wild and weird creations that he makes, but you know, that's he really enjoys it, and he sells among line and it's something to keep him active. Keeping busy makes a couple extra bucks here and there, but it's not even about the money. It's about, you know, making while making back when you invest in it, obviously. But at the same token, it keeps him active, keeps him active and engaged well, and that's what it's all about. I mean, enjoying your retirement. As you said, you have worked hard. The “boiling water challenge” is sending people to the hospital
"Things that kids do today. Really just I mean, no thought is put in and they just do things some things for publicity or gone viral on social media. That's that's the big deal. If you could come up with something that goes viral and all of a sudden make you a star. These people were mostly younger people will do anything of everything to do that the latest internet challenge is to fling boiling water into the freezing cold air watch turn into frozen, vapor. Now the burns center at Loyola University Medical Center says they treat an eight people so far who've tried to challenge. I did this. When I lived in Michigan. Because it was below zero you walk outside you walk out with a pot of boiling water, and you throw it away from you. How these people got burned is beyond belief. I don't even understand how they could be Shoigu asked to put it on themselves. The hospital. Spoilsports poked spokesperson says the patients treated where three to fifty three years old. So I guess they're not all young Loyola shirts. And is putting out the warning about the challenge you said, there's no safe way to do it. So don't bother trying the safest way to do. It is you make sure there's not a big win because a wind will blow it back at you. But these eight people actually dumped it over their heads thanking the boiling water would turn immediately to a missed before it hit their head. Unfortunately. I mean, if that's not utter stupidity. I don't know what it's kind of like the the bird box challenge where people driving cars while blindfolded. I mean, you can't get much dumber than that. Sometimes I think our society so dumbed down because of these viral video now granted, you get a viral video and get a million views, you're making money all of a sudden. So that would be one reason why people do these stupid things and fall into these traps to just, you know, make a couple extra bucks. But it's more than a couple extra bucks.
