"I'm 9 years old, Barry. And this banker comes in my classroom. It's home economics class. Doesn't exist anymore. Right. He's white. He's in a blue suit, a white shirt or red tie, 6 two. And he starts talking about money and free enterprise and capitalism and ownership and balance sheets and all this stuff. And I'm sitting there mesmerized. You're 9 years old. I'm 9. And I'm completely entranced. And I remember probably the second and third class because by the third class I was actually wearing a suit. They only shoot I had, which is my Sunday suit to school, trying to emulate the suit that I saw this guy in. By the way, this was a crush velvet three piece suit with a ruffle shirt and a big bow tie. So you imagine I got beat up when I went to school. So I raised my hand, Barry. And I said, excuse me, sir. I had enough courage to ask this question. What do you do for a living? And how'd you get rich legally? And Barry, I was, I was dead serious. I was just completely, it was to me it was a common sense question because everybody in my neighborhood was a thug a drug dealer or a criminal. I mean, nobody had legit wealth. So this guy's a banker talking to a room full of 9 and ten years old. How does he answer the question? What do you do for a living and how do you get rich legally? He said I'm a banker. And I finance entrepreneurs. And I said, what's an entrepreneur never heard that word my entire life, French word built something out of nothing. Great value. What's an entrepreneur? I mean, no one's ever taught me that. So I went home to the dictionary for those in current generation. It's a Google search. And I opened the dictionary to the word entrepreneur, and my whole life changed. And when I came back to school, one more thing. What's a banker and how many of them are you? And did you say one more time that your job is to lend people like me to be an entrepreneur money? I need to get this whole script straight because here my Friends were getting murdered and jailed and schaden. All this kind of over economics trying to sell drugs or sell but TV said or whatever it is in the hood. Hustle up some money and positive launching something that was very foreign to that part of the world. And so when this guy told me that we're at that time 10,000 banks, hundreds of thousands of bankers. Or were you an unbanked reader? Well, I mean, it was, it was so few you knew where they were, put it that way, right? And this guy was a banker to be full disclosure. It was a beggar for Bank of America. So I knew what Bank of America was because my mother, it was a big deal to go in the bank and over the passport account. So one, I was shocked that there was an industry that whose job it was to lend a risk taker money. Two, I was shocked that it was legal. Three I shocked that it was an actual occupation for a guy who's a legitimate hustler. And my whole life changed, and I left there. I went, as I said, open the dictionary. I start seeing the muffler shop as a business. By the way, the difference between an entrepreneur and a businessman is a businesswoman. Those are things are different. Different risk tolerance and different business plan. But I started seeing the nail salon as a business. I started seeing the barbershop, all these things were businesses. I never seen it that way before. And I went back to school Barry. Sir, your business card, can I have one? Okay. What's a 16th floor thing? You know, there's no floor above the 6th floor encounter, and that's a courthouse. What's in the 16 floor? And where is that at? And by the way, how can you show them coming here in the middle of the day? My mother is an hourly job at McDonald's aircraft. She's got two 15 minute breaks in lunch. How does she hear in the middle of the day? It's called a salary. You have a white shirt. My father wore a blue shirt. How do you keep the shirt clean? Oh, you just do work with mathematics and intellectual activities. You don't do any dirty work. And how does this car in the parking lot? It's got plates on it. And a tag and it's brand new translation is not hot, right? I mean, and it's beautiful. What do you do? And this world opened up to me, man, and I was done. And so, mister Mack, max liquor store, 6 two, also 6 two, black man, owned max liquor store, and I realized for the first time Barry, this was a businessman. And I went to mister Mack. First of all, I didn't know there was a black businessman in Compton. So congratulations, mister Mack. You sell in the wrong kind of candy. He said, excuse me, I said, you have a liquor store, you probably good at liquor, but you have a candy rack in the liquor store, and you're selling around kind of candy. Go away a little boy, I've got a college degree. That's nice I've got cavities. You're selling wrong kind of candy. I'm 9, I'm dead, that's when I was ten. So he said, look, you've got a lot of. I'll hire you. I'm gonna put you at the counter. I want you to be in charge of the candy. Right. I said no. I declined the offer. He said, I'm gonna pay you top dollar for, you know, you come after school. I'm gonna pay you. You'll be paid more than any of your friends. I didn't want to do it. And by the way, Barry, this is analogous today to the basketball player with a contract. To the rapper who can sing really well and it's rocking the mic to a baseball player or anybody who is performing at top dollar with their cashew to check them out writing it. And if you're a great performer, no matter what your industry is, you'll get paid a lot. You may not do a wealth, but you'll get a lot of income. I didn't realize what I was doing back then, but I was making a choice. I was like, I don't want to be a performer. I don't want to be your performer. You're the owner, and I get the perform. I don't want that. Tell you what I want. Make me a box boy. Excuse me? Yeah, I want to do the stocking. He said the workshop I got. That's what I want. I worked there for three weeks and quit. Because then I knew what the wholesale rate was in the retail rate. I knew what the markup was. I knew what supply and demand looked like, what things were moving, what wasn't. I quit once I knew where he bought his inventory, he was on the side of the box. I went home, got my mother sold my mother on making a $40 investment. She made me pay her back, by the way, in my new business and went to smart and final and Irish food store was worried about his inventory. And got put in business and actually put him out of the candy business, not soon after that. I mean, $300 a week on a $40 investment. That's quite fascinating. Scarred by war, Ukrainian children carry on after losing parents, homes and innocence
"UNICEF says an estimated 1.5 million Ukrainian children are at risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. In lviv near the border with Poland, Ukrainian children dance with adults trying to bring some joy in wartime, one of the kids playing 9 year old Andrea recalls the day their house was shelled in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. We ran out of the house but everything was in a white fog. I was wounded right there, then we didn't see dad. When the fog lifted, he found his father on the porch, motionless and covered in blood, after being struck by a Russian projectile, their foster mother, Nina poliakova, told the AP and three is usually calmer than his sister Olga, but that's. At night, there are still births. Sometimes they are screaming hundreds of kids have been killed in Ukraine for the survivors, the wide ranging trauma is certain to leave psychological scars that will follow them into adolescence and adulthood. YouTube’s recommendations send violent and graphic gun videos to 9-year-olds, study finds
"YouTube may be sending gun videos to your 9 year old and a new study finds that it's not the kids, it's the algorithms. I'm Lisa dwyer. YouTube is great at sending users videos based on the user's interests, but new research shows that the site's powerful algorithms can flood young users with violent and disturbing content. The nonprofit tech transparency project created YouTube accounts, mimicking the behavior of young boys with an interest in first person shooter games. YouTube says it works hard to protect children, but the researchers say the study shows otherwise. The account that clicked on YouTube suggestions soon was flooded with graphic videos about school shootings and how to instructions on making firearms fully automatic. One video showed a shooter using a 50 caliber gun to fire on a dummy head filled with lifelike blood and brains. Many of the videos violate YouTube's own policies against violent or gory content. Podcasters Beware: How Limiting Your Audience Can Kill Your Show
"So let me ask you how you avoid limiting your audience. One of the things I appreciate about both Buckeye talk and orange and brown talk and you and shahan do it as well. I don't have to worry if my 9 year old grandson is in the car. You guys are PG-13 at worst. You don't go into our, you shut it off. You will not do it. A lot of podcasters make an initial error. They limit their audience by using vulgarity, profanity or talking about adult topics when they need to be. Do you do that consciously? Is that a conscious decision or is that just your dad? Yeah, it's probably somewhere between conscious and not so conscious that some of the things that I do here on podcasts. Sometimes I hear it, I think, wow, that is hot. I am surprised that they went there without more of a, hey, by the way. But to your point to you, and through the textures we hear this, I know there are kids listening with their parents on the way to school, and I would never want to prevent them from listening or cause an awkward moment between mom and dad and the kid because of something we said. So we make dumb dad jokes, but we do, I think consciously, we do consciously not say not use words and not say things that we want a kid to hear because kids like sports. I mean, if this, if I was 8, you know, back when I was 8 in 1981, if I could have hopped on my bike and had something, I guess you shouldn't wear your blood while you're riding your bike. If I would have been in the car with my parents and listened to a podcast that's all about my favorite sports team, I would have wanted to be part of that conversation and not have my parents say you can't listen to this because they're saying naughty stuff.

Lives immigrants built in Texas town shattered by shooting
"People in a Cleveland Texas neighborhood say their community has changed forever following a mass shooting. It was April 28th at police a neighbors told a man firing off a gun in his yard that his shooting was keeping a newborn baby awake, and angry Daniel or a pesa allegedly went to the infant's home with an AR style rifle, and shot and killed the baby's mother, 9 year old brother, and three extended family members or friends, neighbor Sean Crawford lives two houses down from the family of Wilson Garcia, where the shootings happened. He was just always happy go lucky Wilson, him and his family. Crawford says Texas governor Greg Abbott's describing the 5 victims as quote illegal immigrants now have residents scared. Sheriff: Suspected Texas gunman caught hiding under laundry
"The man accused of shooting to death 5 of its Texas neighbors has been captured. The suspect is in custody. At a news conference carried by KTRK, San jacinto county, sheriff Gregg capers, says the search for 38 year old Francisco or a pesa ended Tuesday when authorities received a tip to his location, a home near Houston about 20 miles from where the shooting occurred. He was caught hiding in a closet, underneath some laundry. Or a pesa is accused of shooting to death 5 neighbors, including a 9 year old boy and his mother after neighbors asked him to go farther away if he was going to fire round in his yard because it was keeping a baby awake, authorities say oropesa, then went over to the neighbor's house with the baby and began shooting, authorities say he's being charged with 5 counts of murder and Bond is set at $5 million. Man who lost wife, son in Texas mass shooting tells story
"A vigil was held Sunday in Cleveland Texas for 5 people who were shot and killed after a neighbor was asked to keep the noise down. The pain could be felt at Sunday's vigil to mourn the deaths of Wilson Garcia's wife, 9 year old son and three neighbors ages 31 21 and 18 TV station KTRK covered the gathering. Following the vigil Garcia talked about what happened last Friday night. He says his month old son was trying to sleep, so he asked neighbor Francisco or a pesa to stop shooting his gun. Garcia says some 20 minutes later or pays a walked up to his house and started shooting. Police are still searching for 38 year old or a pesa, and there is an $80,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. I'm Donna warder

"This hour is going to really be focused on things that are eternal. In nature, and they're much more important than politics, politics is critical, obviously. We talk about it all the time. The politics is only part of a broader picture, we're going to talk about morality and religion, and eternity. Joining us now is doctor Jerry root. He's professor emeritus from Wheaton university. We could talk about that, but definitely want to talk about more importantly. His book, the neglected C. S. Lewis, and doctor root is with us. Now, doctor, welcome to the program. Thank you, Charlie. I'm grateful. Wonderful. So doctor root, I have personally been blessed by reading and studying C. S. Lewis. I've only really touched on 6 or 7 of his books, but I've enjoyed them thoroughly. I mean, he was prolific. But let me just start with a rather general question who was C. S. Lewis and why does he matter? C. S. Lewis taught at Oxford university for 20 9 years. He also taught at Cambridge University for 9. He grew up in Northern Ireland, and he was a guy who lost his mother when he was 9 years old and became an atheist as a result of that. And slowly he worked his way back to faith. And there was largely due to a conversation that he had with J.R.R. Tolkien is very close friend. But he had these longings that drove him and prompted him. He also had not only the longings of the heart, he also had a very sharp mind, and he needed to get over these intellectual barriers in order to come to fully embrace his faith. He was a prolific author. There are actually 73 titles under his name right now. He wrote 56 of them while he was living and the others he wrote after he died. No, they're actually collections of essays, letters that he wrote and so on that flush out the 73 volumes.

Mourners gather for 1st Nashville school shooting funeral
"Mourners gathered for the first funeral for victims of the Nashville school shooting. 9 year old Evelyn dick house was described as a shining light. Friends and family bid farewell to a girl who loved art, music, animals, and snuggling with their older sister on the couch. Reverend Craig stauffer at the woodmont Christian church said the challenge is to take her light and keep spreading it to a world that has so much darkness and pain. The church is just a few miles from the covenant school. Dick house and two other 9 year olds and three adults were killed. Reverend stauffer told the AP it's been surreal and a nightmare that they are waiting to wake up from. It's been one of the hardest weeks you could imagine. I'm Ed Donahue

Victims of Nashville school shooting honored in somber vigil
"Victims of the Nashville school shooting were remembered at a solemn vigil Wednesday night. Hundreds of people gathered at a candlelight vigil in downtown Nashville to honor and mourn those shot and killed at the covenant school earlier this week. Two days ago was our cities worst day. Nashville mayor John Cooper addressed the crowd. I still wish we did not need to be here. But we need to be here. The event included performances by Sheryl Crow, Margo price, and catch sea corps of old crow medicine show. First Lady Jill Biden, civic leaders and the 7 children of murdered school custodian Mike hill were among those who attended, city council member, Russ pulley. Covenant staff laid down their lives attempting to protect the children in their care. Police said 28 year old former student Audrey Hale shot out glass doors at the school Monday morning, and fired indiscriminately, killing three 9 year old students, the head of the school, a substitute teacher, and mister hill. "Megyn Kelly weighed in on this. Do we have the clip from megyn Kelly? She's got a big popular podcast. I've known Meghan for years. You still appear on her show all the time on Fox News channel. In fact, she wrote a book and included me in the book. We had a very famous exchange over maternity leave, which got a lot of clicks and a lot of a lot of attention. On Megan's podcast this week, now we had to bleep it, right? Because she uses the F word. So you got, did you get the bleep in there? All right, let's here's what Meghan said about the Joe Scarborough style reaction that it's the Republicans fault when there's a mass killing like the one at covenant school and church in Nashville. Three 9 year olds were shot down yesterday by one sick person. In addition to the three school administrators. There's something wrong with our society and I for one am sick of the knee jerk. It's the guns get the guns. We have 330 million guns. It may be over 400 million by some counts in America. They're not going away. We could do assault weapons, ban tomorrow. They're not going away, all right? We had to take a serious honest look at what's wrong with us. Makes sense to me. I mean, you say what's wrong with us? I don't put myself in the category of a monster who thinks putting bullets in the bodies of little 9 year old beautiful angels. I don't relate to that person.

"36. She's 36. Which means she got knocked up young, too. But she was probably 19 because her son's 17, and she could have been 18, but I don't know because she shared some more details. And clip 16. Now, my son, when I approached him and told him, Tyler, I'm going to be a 36 year old grandmother. He said, well, didn't you make granny a 36 year old granny? Said yes, I did. There you go. He said, well, then it's hereditary. Nice try, buddy. Nice try, buddy. What does that mean? Okay, I know, I don't know when Lauren boebert had her well, her 17 year old son. She's 30. 36 so she was 18 or 19 when she had. When she had, which means also her mom was 18. Or 19, and she had her. Absolutely. That's fine. They're young mothers, but that's fine. I'm not going to shame her for getting pregnant. Right. But for her to do all this stuff against comprehensive sex education, perhaps she wouldn't have gotten pregnant at a young age or her son getting somebody else who's 15, I believe his girlfriend's 15. I didn't know the edge of the girl, but she's young. It's not rape related by any of these two are dating. There's no statutory. You have sex. And if they had comprehensive sex education, they might understand the idea. Safe sex. Exactly. And sex that will not lead to pregnancy. And yes, condoms, they're not a 100%, but they're really, really good. Right. It's very rare that they don't work. And that's usually if you're not doing it right. And that's the sex education can teach you how to put one on correctly. Like I was saying the other day about my 7th grade science teacher for mister frost. It was just a bunch of girls. And he was, it was just one week of sex Ed, and this poor man. So he brought out birth control pills. Condoms, diaphragms. What was available in 1978, 79? And IUD is not IEDs. IUDs were available, then they were off the market and other back. Not IEDs because that would have been very dangerous. Yes, but one way to get rid of pregnancy. So he showed us how to put a condom on a banana. Oh, we had to have cucumber banana. And that made us giggle 'cause we're 11 and 12 years old girls. The diagrams of what the bodies look like and when we saw boys, but it's important, even at that, that was relatively, it's not young, 11 and 12 year old girls and boys are very curious at that point in time. And so I don't think they're teaching people how to masturbate. And I don't care if they are. I think that's a good thing. Most people figured that out. They figured that out on their own. Especially boys. My sister's oldest when he was like really young, like, two. She was, he was changing and we're bathing him or something and he started pulling. Wow. And then he pulled too hard and hurt himself? Oh. Oh, 'cause he was only like two years old. And she goes, see, this is why we're nice to that. She says, don't be mean to it. You have to be nice to that. And he was like, he started crying because it was just a little too too many of us having a good time. Yeah. Two or three, that's when you start, by the way. Yeah, but also, like, and it's healthy. But also just safe sex. My last girlfriend, I know it's a shock to everyone. She really wanted to get pregnant. She really wanted to have a baby. Oh my God. So I was she was looking for a hug. I was extra careful to lock that down because I was not getting her pregnant. Yeah. Because Travis is having some realizations about himself and who he likes to have sex with at the time. And it was not women. Exactly. But yeah, that would wow. I was very college. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Well, adults, at least. And she was older than me. All right, yeah. So it was, but no, so I was there, I knew she wanted to have a baby so I was very, very careful about everything. That's funny. Yeah. God, I don't know. Well, I guess I knew people that weren't, but they got married usually first, not all of my Friends did. But, wow. I ran through years later, she is happily married, and she does have kids now. And they are not yours. You're sure about that. Yes, I can back to you. I know exactly when the last time I had sex with a woman was. I can backdate that one. Oh wait, let's wrap this up because okay, 17. Because here's the other thing she's talking about pregnancies and stuff like that. This is just weird where she goes with this. Okay. And you know, there's something special about rural conservative communities. They value life. If you look at teen pregnancy rates throughout the nation, well, they're the same

Man, 4 children die in a fire at a northwest Phoenix condo
"A deadly condominium fire in Arizona claimed the lives of two additional victims, Phoenix fire department officials announced over the weekend that 11 year old Tamar and 9 year old savage died at a hospital from fire related injuries, two more victims of a fire in northwest Phoenix last Wednesday night that also killed their father 52 year old Shimon Boyer and two younger children, fire officials said the father was pronounced dead at the scene, the victims were found in their beds, three of the four children had disabilities, no smoke detectors were found inside the condominium by our officials are looking into the cause. There was no indication of the fire was set intentionally. I am Jennifer King

Details Emerge in Killing of Reporter, Woman and 9-Year-old
"I got so much to talk about. I wanted to kind of give you my thoughts on this story of the young man 19 year old who allegedly shot, I believe the lady's name is Natasha, 38 year old woman who was an acquaintance of his. He shot her while he was in a vehicle with her. I think they were sitting and maybe talking. I don't know how a 38 year old and 19 year old are acquaintances, but somehow they have some type of a relationship to where they were sitting in the car together. He shot and killed her. Then he went down to the scene or returned back to the scene where he had killed her at, there was two reporters that were reporting on this particular incident of the shooting, and he decided to gun them down, killing one of them, dealing Lions 24 year old young man who was engaged, his fiance says that. They murdered the love that guy murdered the love of her life. And she'll never be the same. And I could not begin to imagine. The pain, the vitriol, the hatred that I would feel if someone killed my wife.

Many communities here have had their own reckoning on racial equity and policing, including Sacramento, where the police shooting death of Stefan clerk three years ago has sparked calls for change. California reports Mary Franklin Harvin spoke with Tanya Phase on the founder of Black Lives matter, Sacramento about how activists like her are thinking about sustaining the mo mentum behind the movement for racial equality. My experience. Momentum isn't something that one organizer organization can create. It's usually a moment or a certain person that's been taken The situation how they were taken that sparks something in the community where everybody wants to show up. We've lost 20 people since we've been doing the work in Sacramento, 20 black folks. The police violence, and Stefan Clark was the one who got the most people out because he was part of two communities. He's loved into communities in Sacramento. He had a lot of friends and then a lot of people. Were just drawn to that story. A lot of people will say, you know. Oh, Kanye, you organized the march knew that thousands of people out there like No, It's the situation that got the people out when it comes to George Boyd. I think the situation Woz is that there was back to back killings that were All of the continual, well known cold. It was in place, so people were at home just watching all of this. It's like they had them sit down and actually look at this instead of living their lives, like normally how we do and so I think that was what brought the moments amount and I hope that We continue could stay activated because I know it's gonna happen again. I saw the list on your website of people who've been killed since 2014 which was really trying to look at in black and white. And when you're talking, it just made me feel like there's this really sad irony that Sometimes the things that are bringing new energy to this movement are the new deaths, right? It's really sad that we that we what do they call that in like basketball like you on defense instead of on offense? It's really sad that you know it works that way. But You know, there are organizations on the ground like ours that are working in often. Um, you know, we're trying to make sure that things get changed. And then we're also trying to make changes within our community so that we have what we need. Can you tell me a little bit more about those resource is And how you feel like they're reinforcing the future of the black community in Sacramento. We're just trying to make sure that folks that are in our communities have what they need so that they're not Trying to get it in other ways, even if it's cloudy or career options or business ideas or You know, self defense, you know, learning how to box like whatever it is that you like to do. Doing it in a constructive way. And so that's the way we're having a lot of no, you're right training by organizations like they feel you and the, um, the national lawyer's Guild, But you know, they would say things like, Well, you don't have to show your license or idea if you're walking. And that's true legally. But if you're black and you tell officer know you might get killed, so we want to make a space where we confront all those services into the community and provide a place for folks to be reminded. A woman and two teenagers were taken to grady memorial hospital in atlanta on sunday after they were injured when a boat exploded. Herb sounds about right here. Her bricks Meyer sure he was driving on the highway. When he drifted into the other lane and crashed head on into a 33 year old by the name of Christopher Sanchez. And then just a few minutes later, a 45 year old by the name of Herbert Aguer Lopez crashed into those two cars. They're all fine God. But can you imagine what the problem was? Well, okay, So it's two in the morning. People five AM don't know how to drive and they get into accidents. Something tells me there might have been some liquor involved direct. All three guys were crunk. And also my God. All three. All three motorists were drunk, and all three are facing operating while intoxicated charges. They also all completely wrecked all three of their cars and had to be totally from the scene. Everybody survived the wreckage. But what are the odds that 2:45 a.m. that three?
