"Recall that governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Republican of Arkansas, made this a key point in her official response to the president's State of the Union address. At 40, I'm the youngest governor in the country. And at 80, he's the oldest president in American history. Of course, it's not just about a number, despite the fact that Haley suggested a mental competency test for politicians over 75, and yes, it's not lost on anyone, that would actually include Donald Trump, her former boss as well. But it's utilizing the number to make a larger point about a new generation of leadership that these Republicans hope will be an appealing message as they make the case against Joe Biden. It's time for a new generation of Republican leadership. We're ready. Ready to move past the stale ideas and faded names of the past. And we are more than ready for a new generation to lead us into the future. Democrats have some recent history on dealing with older leaders in the party. We've just seen in the House of Representatives the entire top tier of the democratic leadership change hands and go to the next generation. It all started with Nancy Pelosi's decision not to seek leadership again, she is 82 years old. We saw steady Hoyer and Jim Clyburn, both in their 80s, step back from their leadership positions to allow a younger new generation, including leader Hakeem Jeffries, Catherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar, to take over those spots. And while my colleagues report that this conversation about the president's age, annoys him, as might be expected, it is not just an inside the beltway or democratic establishment conversation. If you go out across the country and talk to voters, especially democratic voters about what they think of the president and what they're looking for in the future, this issue of his age does come up. In fact, my colleague Edward Isaac dovere was on CNN talking about his reporting earlier today. Talk to one person who was part of a number of focus groups that were done last year all over the country said that words like brain mush or that he's not up to the job come up all the time. And those are things of the Biden campaign. If there is one, we'll have to address. But here's the political reality folks of this topic. There's not a clear alternative inside the Democratic Party to Joe Biden. So what you see happening right now is Democrats expressing concern, but with no alternative to unify behind, they believe moving ahead with Joe Biden may be the path of least resistance. If the alternative is a knockdown drag them out, rough and tumble, democratic primary, the fear is that that may produce a weaker nominee than Joe Biden would be. And so even if these concerns exist and they do and they're real, there seems to be a bit of an attempt by Democrats to sort of bury their heads in the sand and just kind of hope for the best, which nobody in politics will tell you is the best strategy. It's important to note The White House pushes back on this notion that this age factor is dominating all the conversation around a potential reelection. Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman, says quote, that's simply not true. He goes on to say they attacked him over age before he beat them in 2020. They attacked him over age as he built the best legislative record in modern history. They did the same before he beat them in 2022. I'm not sure what they think there accomplishing. It clearly is a sensitive topic for those in and around this White House, but it's one that is simply not going away and will have to be addressed as the president himself often says, when asked about this topic, how can the American people know that age is not going to be a big obstacle for you, he simply says, watch me. And we will. That's it for today's political briefing. Thanks so much for listening, and if you like the show, please consider rating and reviewing us

"President Biden, the oldest person to have ever served as president, gets his medical check up today just on the cusp of getting ready to announce a reelection campaign where his age is likely to be front and center. President Biden went for a physical today, Walter Reed national military medical center. The White House said of the physical that it was, quote, straightforward, as of this recording, the results still had not been released. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with being 80 years old, mom, if you're listening, that's for you, but President Biden at 80 years old is indeed the oldest person to have served in the job, and he is poised to announce a reelection campaign where he's going to go to the American people and ask them to renew his contract for another four years. If he successful, he will be 86 years old at the end of his second term. So it's not a surprising thing that the president's age is a central topic of discussion, not just as a Republican critique, which there's plenty of that and we'll get to that, but also inside the Democratic Party. Democrats are famous for hand wringing about all kinds of things. But this moment of democratic hand wringing is about whether or not putting forth an 80 plus year old man as the top of the ticket and the standard bearer for the party, even if they are pleased with his results thus far as president is the wisest course forward. I urge you to go to CNN dot com and check out a well reported piece from my colleagues film Mattingly and Edward Isaac dovere. They talked to tons of Democrats inside The White House outside The White House to get at this concern. Aides have reported that the president told them that his age will not be a deciding factor for him in making that final ultimate decision about whether or not to pull the trigger on a reelection campaign as he is expected to do. One thing getting a lot of attention inside The White House in thinking about a possible reelection campaign is the president's schedule, and we are told that the Biden team is using the Obama reelect as a model. So you can expect to see something similar this year from Biden, he may announce he's running, he'll do fundraising, but don't expect a daily robust campaign schedule until well into 2024. Now, these questions about whether or not the president has the fortitude and strength and health and vitality to not only run for a second term, but potentially serve four years of a second term is not lost on Republicans. And you hear from lots of different factions within the party, this notion of putting Joe Biden's advanced years front and center. Listen to just this week when Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, announced her presidential campaign. America is not past our prime. It's just that our politicians are passed theirs. We won't win the fight for the 21st century. If we keep trusting politicians from the 20th century. In the America I see the permanent politician will finally retire. We'll have term limits for Congress. And mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old. And you may

Saudi Arabia's 86 year old king appointed his son crown prince Mohammed bin Salman to replace him as prime minister, continuing a gradual transfer of power in the world's largest oil exporter. I'm Ann with global news, rich. Thanks a lot for that and let's get back to our guest Loren Gilbert CEO of wealth wise financial Lorraine. We've got this aggressive fed out there. We've got the possibility of a recession. Well, to begin with, how indeed what are the chances of a recession this year and next? And secondly, how much pain do you think the fed is willing to place on the U.S. economy? Well, the fed is definitely talking tough. And what they're doing is saying that they're going to be tough going forward. And if you believe what they're saying, then certainly it's going to be hard to hit a soft landing. And they've stopped even talking about a soft landing, which indicates they are willing to go to a hard landing. So certainly that means a recession. And so the big question is, do we believe what the fed is saying? Or in fact, are they going to talk tough? And hope that things somewhat slow down and the inflation starts coming down. And then they can then pause. So I don't see a recession in 2022. And it's very unlikely in 2022. And even 2023 right now, if you look at what's kind of been priced in 25 to 30% chance of recession, 12 months out, but having said that, I think the likelihood of a recession in 2023, late 2023 or 2024 is very probable. So that makes it a difficult time really to get aggressive and probably even to do a lot of buying in the equity markets. And particularly you started off with talking about investment grade corporate bonds. Is it likely that we're going to see a pretty sharp revision down of earnings expectations over this next period? I think we're already seeing that from analysts. And I think we're going to continue to hear that. And the question is, do earnings just go off the cliff or is it just continuing to slow down? I do think, though, that it is an opportune time to over time be purchasing in equity. So we are seeing opportunities there. So we certainly do see some opportunities. I think people could take advantage of. But certainly on the more defensive cautious way. And I think for investors to be thinking about their opportunities right now in taxable accounts would be to take tax loss harvesting. And if in their retirement accounts, they're going to want to hold longer than doing too much of selling because you're not going to get any kind of tax advantage there. Tell me something here as well. If you took your views as a month ago to what they are now, how would they have evolved? That's the first part of my question. And secondly, do you think that the emergence of doom for Europe over egging it? Right. So we certainly have changed our stance. And that is, that's changed a long with the fed's statements. Really, Jackson hole was a pivot. And ever since then, to take them seriously as far as what they're saying would mean that we need to be more concerned about this hard landing idea. And so yes, I would say that we have pivoted as well to being on the more cautious side preparing ourselves for a potential recession. Having said that, I would also say that not all recessions are created equally. And we are not expecting a severe recession. And that's why I say that even through this trough, we see opportunities that I think people can take advantage of. And then to your point about Europe, I do think somewhat it is potentially over overdone and although this Nord stream pipeline is another big issue and that's the latest news. But with that, what we heard is that Italy is prepared for the winter. And so the question is, how many countries are in fact they've been preparing maybe they're more prepared than we think they are? Yeah, but you've just outlined, you've got a slowing U.S. economy, a slowing European economy, and that slowing Chinese economy. Well, that's a kind of, I think we're out of time. I don't think we could really go into this, but it paints a pretty nervous picture out there, Lorraine. Thanks very much Rashad. All right

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason, we all struggle with getting older. I sit here and try to tell myself I'm not that old when I really know I am that old. But what I've learned more importantly is that if you continue to want to learn, you're not that old. The reason I think about this is I look at my father. My father is 86 years old, and I realized my father doesn't want to learn anything new. Had to buy my father a new cell phone. His three G cell phone didn't work anymore, wasn't going to work anymore. So he bought him a basic bottom of the line, non smartphones. My father still has a hard time with voicemail and with the technology and doesn't want to learn anything more. So I had to do a cheat sheet taking the manual and basically hear the buttons you need and here's what you need to know. I made it as simple as possible for my father and explained it to him all over the phone and he still didn't get it. I had him go over to the AT&T store, they try to explain it to him, and he still didn't get it. And it's not because he doesn't have the capability. He doesn't have the desire anymore. I guess in my mind, I'm not that old because I still want to learn because I'm still learning and I still enjoy it, but there will come a time I'm sure when I'm just like my dad

Good Days (MM #3864)
"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Throughout our lives, we have good days. We have bad days. There are a lot of internal influences and external influences that affect that. Of course, as we get older, tend to have more bad days than good, just the way the body is. The body starts breaking down. I've always acquitted it to being like a car. The more miles you got in the car, the more possible problems are going to have. But one day I always try to make sure is a good day is October 20th. It's my father's birthday, and today he turns 86 years old. Now what's amazing is I lost all of my grandparents by the time they were 65, and that's kind of sad. I didn't have grandparents, so having my parents around both in their 80s is truly remarkable. I'm very thankful though to have my father here for 86 years and I count my lucky stars every day that he's here and I take every day as a blessing. Do we see each other enough? No. Do we talk to each other enough? No. But I'll tell you what. I'm one of the lucky ones, and I never take that for granted, because I have so many friends, including my spouse who've lost parents so early on, and it's just not fair and it's not right, but I'll take it as a win.
