"Might be one of those bet it, but don't watch it, type games. Boise state and San Diego state, Boise laying two total of one 19 and a half. This is going to be an under, all right? This is going to be an under bet. This game is going to be ugly. These two have played once this season. In that game, they scored 79 points. Now, one team didn't score 79 to the other team scoring 75, they combined to score 79 points. It was 42, 37 in favor of Boise. Why? There are a lot of factors that went into it, but they both play incredible defense and very slow basketball. San Diego state number one in Ken palm's defense and efficiency. Boise is 11th. San Diego state 275th in tempo, Boise is 302nd. In addition, both teams are awful shooting free throws. So even if they're getting free opportunities late in the game or late in the first half, it's not like they knock them down. When they got together the first time the total was one 24, they have readjusted this four and a half points south. I don't think it's enough. I don't think we're in any danger of this game being played at a fast tempo. I think it's too elite defenses. It's gonna be higher scoring than last time. How could it not be? They only scored 79 total points, but I don't see it eclipsing one 19 and a half. So final play on the pod. San Diego state Boise state in an ugly one under one 19 and a half and that is a rat. That's sort of what today feels like a presidential speech. The chairman speaks Ernie's earnings earnings were trying to recalibrate the single elephant in the room. Which is a boom and original American economy. That's an awfully good time to talk to Michael Darda. Then can partners Michael Thank you so much for being with us on this historic day. What is your analysis of how this unique boom economy ends? Thanks for having me on Tom. Well, you know, that is a fairly uncertain prospect. At the moment. I think what's occurred so far is that the consensus has more less gravitated to the V shaped recovery view, And that's simply because it's in the data, right. I mean, at first, it was just market indicators and then forward indicators. We started to get some pretty strong data. Last year, there was a bit of an interruption because of co vid. Enclosures towards the end of the year early this year, and now it looks like we're we are booming once again, So the question is, and we do have a fed meeting today. Um will the feds timing on both a caper and then eventually rate hikes be calibrated in such a way that you know that the Fed hits its targets and doesn't either overshoot. In a material way or undershoot. And you know that is until my view is there's more of a risk of an odor overshoot this time just because of the strength that we're seeing an aggregate demand we're gonna probably have about a 10% annualized growth rate for Kyu won nominal GDP nominal, so real plus inflation. So we're catching up to that pre covert trend growth path for the economy, which is something that was not seen after the 0709 recession to that. Keep our listeners worldwide in suspense. One of your great features of your researches. You distill too. What to do in the equity market. How do you take all the economics and politics frankly of today and distill it into a conviction to own stocks? Well, come first with a lot of humility that right? Secondly, we we have to understand here that there are a lot of moving parts so it doesn't make a lot of sense to isolate one policy and then extrapolated that into either market or economic moves Right. There's recently been a lot of discussion about the capital gains tax, You know, moving up significantly. Um, we have You know a lot of discussion today about a new education and child care proposal coming out of the administration will see what actually hits the light of day here with these proposals, but you know, but there are a lot of there a lot of moving parts. So you don't want to just isolate 11 policy and then make a call based on that, especially if the legislative process still has a fair amount of gridlock, which the U. S Senate is 50 50 with the vice president as a tiebreaker, but You're probably not going to see super extreme policy actions within the context of the current political configuration. That's all right. I wanted to go, Mike. I mean, I guess over the last couple of weeks, we really seen the rhetoric around tax increases and tax policy. Really ramp up and it's I think it may be took some people by surprise. The breath and the scope of the tax increases that President Biden is proposing. How much for risk is that to the general economic outlook and maybe even the appetite for risk assets? Yeah, Great question, Paul. So I think in the context of where we sit with the stock market that's done so phenomenally. Well, earnings have been great. But we've also had a big expansion in valuations. The S and P is sitting at a 23 forward multiple, which is quite high. Historically. I mean, we're 25% on a above on a multiple forward multiple basis. Above the last of several years of the last cycle s O. What happens to that multiple in an environment now tie it to what we were just talking about where there is some over shooting with higher inflation. With market interest rates moving up in with tax rates on Capitol moving up, probably not above 40%. But moving up from where they are. And I would say that those would all count as headwinds to the forward valuation. I don't think that you know that that statement is super controversial. The question is How much of a headwind in can really strong earnings over power that headwind and you know, the higher we go on valuations. I think that the bigger the challenge that that will be so you know, equity markets. I think a lot of the strength is probably going to prove to be behind us at this juncture. So, Michael. A lot of folks are rethinking or thinking about this reopening trade of, you know, really, For the last six we start started seeing vaccines really come in to the marketplace and some good news there. Certainly. How are you thinking about this market here is it is it is my rotation, trade. My reopening trade. Still the way to go or do I look back? And I say poison great numbers out of Google last night. Some numbers have to be looking really good at Apple on Facebook today. Amazon tomorrow maybe just stick with those big cat. Big tech top line growth stories. Right, right. Well, I think the reopening trade still has some legs. Everything has moved up quite significantly over the course of the last year, But I would say the focus for investors, in my opinion should probably be more on what we would think of a small cap value. I think there's a lot more upside. There, and in an environment where inflation rates and market interest rates are going up. I think you know that's a bigger headwind to what we would think of his growth stocks that are carrying much more significant valuations. Michael, I got, like, five ways to go here. But I'm gonna go to where the trade deficit was today. The trade gap and Michael McKee showing it to be a record level, and there's huge export import dynamics in this natural disaster. I get all that. But how does Michael darted with you? Years of work going back to juvie? Leninsky. How do you deal? With twin deficit A trade deficit seems to be growing. And a fiscal deficit is the president will touch on tonight. That's something you and I never imagined in our youth. Indeed, Tom. Well, number one. Don't try to make predictions off of the trade deficit. That's one thing I've learned. Yes, you know, but but more more broadly, What's happening here is that the U. S economy has gone into a boom and you know we're well ahead of the rest of the world. And when that happens, then capital tends to come in and you're spending. You know more than you know more than you're taxing. And so deficits are going up both on the trade side. And you know the fiscal deficits obviously Expo Loaded. Um as we move forward and get closer to full employment, then I think we face him different choices. One will be you know, once the Fed is at the point where they're starting to wrap up QE and move off the.
