The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to 310,000 last week. That's a new pandemic low. The report from the Labor Department indicates were on pace to reach the average level before the pandemic in several weeks. Joining us live on Skype to talk all about it. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst for bankrate dot com, How you doing, Mark? Very well. Good to be with your boat. Hey, how would you characterize this week's report? I think fairly reassuring. It's been a fairly steady climb lower for these new jobless claims. And now there were at the level of 310,000 on the new claims. And these are the programs that the states all reported, including D. C. We're about 100,000 above where we were. Before the pandemic began. Of course, we still have an elevated number of Americans who have continued to receive unemployment assistance. And as we know, with this week we're seeing essentially the end of the additional and extended benefits that were under the pandemic programs. There are still concerns about whether this latest latest covid surge is going to put a drag on the recovery. What are you seeing right now? Well, it's already put a drag on the recovery way of Goldman Sachs, for example, ratchet back its estimate for the for the current quarter, but and basically then push that economic activity end of the final three months of the year. I think that if we do get some relief from Covid here in the coming weeks and months, essentially we could probably see some restoration of the things that Americans were basically thinking they could do all summer long and then, basically as August in July hit Began to cool it a bit. It's also weighing on the global economic recovery. But of course, there's no shortage of things doing that. And as we've discussed in the past, one of the biggest of those is the global supply chain disruptions, which is keeping cargo ships parked off the West Coast. We don't have enough capacity to get things on trains across the country shortage of truck drivers, and so we're expecting. The forecasts are for a strong holiday shopping season. But it may be that Americans aren't going to find all of the things on Store shelves that they would like or expect. Besides that mark are there any other economic trends you're looking at? Well, we continue obviously to watch inflation and the tight job market and inflation has been a more significant and persistent problem than basically anyone expected. But the expectation also is that once we get into next year, we alleviate some of those supply chain disruptions. And we also have basically a better year over year analysis to provide meaning will be coming off of higher prices. I think we'll get some relief into next year on inflation Mark. Thanks as always, Thanks. Thank you. Mark Cameron, senior economic analyst for bankrate dot com. We're going to check out sports in just a moment. It's 2 43 national Industries for the.
