The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to 310,000 last week. That's a new pandemic low. The report from the Labor Department indicates were on pace to reach the average level before the pandemic in several weeks. Joining us live on Skype to talk all about it. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst for bankrate dot com, How you doing, Mark? Very well. Good to be with your boat. Hey, how would you characterize this week's report? I think fairly reassuring. It's been a fairly steady climb lower for these new jobless claims. And now there were at the level of 310,000 on the new claims. And these are the programs that the states all reported, including D. C. We're about 100,000 above where we were. Before the pandemic began. Of course, we still have an elevated number of Americans who have continued to receive unemployment assistance. And as we know, with this week we're seeing essentially the end of the additional and extended benefits that were under the pandemic programs. There are still concerns about whether this latest latest covid surge is going to put a drag on the recovery. What are you seeing right now? Well, it's already put a drag on the recovery way of Goldman Sachs, for example, ratchet back its estimate for the for the current quarter, but and basically then push that economic activity end of the final three months of the year. I think that if we do get some relief from Covid here in the coming weeks and months, essentially we could probably see some restoration of the things that Americans were basically thinking they could do all summer long and then, basically as August in July hit Began to cool it a bit. It's also weighing on the global economic recovery. But of course, there's no shortage of things doing that. And as we've discussed in the past, one of the biggest of those is the global supply chain disruptions, which is keeping cargo ships parked off the West Coast. We don't have enough capacity to get things on trains across the country shortage of truck drivers, and so we're expecting. The forecasts are for a strong holiday shopping season. But it may be that Americans aren't going to find all of the things on Store shelves that they would like or expect. Besides that mark are there any other economic trends you're looking at? Well, we continue obviously to watch inflation and the tight job market and inflation has been a more significant and persistent problem than basically anyone expected. But the expectation also is that once we get into next year, we alleviate some of those supply chain disruptions. And we also have basically a better year over year analysis to provide meaning will be coming off of higher prices. I think we'll get some relief into next year on inflation Mark. Thanks as always, Thanks. Thank you. Mark Cameron, senior economic analyst for bankrate dot com. We're going to check out sports in just a moment. It's 2 43 national Industries for the.

"Be the high and the high in Fremont. Today will be 76 degrees. This is morning edition from NPR News. I'm Rachel Martin and I'm David Green. President Trump is pushing for schools to reopen within person classes. If they do not, he is threatening to withhold federal funding. Here is the president on Fox News Sunday during an interview with Chris Wallace. Young people have to go to school. And there's problems when you don't go to school, too, and there's going to be a funding problem because we're not going to fund when they don't open. This fool's. We're not going to fund them. We're not going to give them money if they're not going to school. If they don't open now. In March, lawmakers approved $13.5 billion for K through 12. Education under the cares act package, but education groups say schools need at least $200 billion in federal funding to safely reopen this fall. So how are lawmakers planning to close this gap is Congress negotiates another round of Corona virus aid this week, But we have Congressman Bobby Scott on the line with us. He chairs the House Education and Labor Committee. He's a Democrat from the state of Virginia Congressman Welcome Thank you, David. It's good to be with you. Well, it's good to have you as always. That was quite an interview from the president yesterday, saying forcefully that he would withhold federal money if schools don't reopen. What is your response to that? Well, first of all of it. There's no apparent legal authority to withhold the funds and we need a plan to reopen the schools. Everybody knows that the students really need to be in school. If it could be done safely. I mean, they they can achieve better academic success. They're in school. Socializing skills can't be done at home.
