Well, in this case, a mask list man walked into Roscoe's house of Chicken and waffles in Pasadena. That's right. That was yesterday evening. In fact, when employees said the trouble began, the man was seen in security footage wearing a dark blue shirt. He was first asked by the cashier to put on a face covering as required by local health orders, he said. Why don't you come over here and tell me to my face? And he told them again. Just put a mask on this timer was the cook Robert Gonzales, who said it Well, that's when the guy got mad and pulled out a gun. Then went back toward the kitchen. We're gonna solve this was cooking. The man pointed the gun directly at him and demanded that Gonzalez put all of the chicken into the bag. When asked for clarification about whether the armed men meant money or food, Gonzales said. They ain't got no money in the kitchen. I'm on food. Well, there was plenty of chicken, but there was no bag. So the man grabbed a couple of take out orders that had already been prepared while the employees ran out of the back of the building, So I understand our chicken is good, but I mean, that's some expensive chicken. He's got there. It was just pretty stupid and crazy at the same time. None of the employees were harmed. The suspect is described as being in his mid thirties, roughly 6 ft. Movies can be big, lumbering productions with a lot of expensive moving pieces. Here's NPR's Andrew Limbaugh on the difficulties of moviemaking during Cove. It Here we are. Earlier this summer, a much Sonnier and bright eyed Tom Cruise tweeted a video of himself going to a movie theater undercover to watch his movie tenant back to the movie theater. It's a different side of the actor than what's in the leaked tape. But the point is the same. Tom Cruise wants the movie industry to keep going, but that's a tall order. The biggest thing is to make sure that we sort of hard wire the new norm so they can safely continue. That's Dr Reginald Nesbitt from the Safe way forward consulting group that works with studios and production companies to create Covitz safety protocols. A lot of it is the same stuff. We all have to do, wearing masks, staying 6 ft. Apart from each other, But there are a few things specific to movie productions. To consider, for instance, scouting up locations become important. What of the size of the cast and the crew that are going to be in a particular square footage? Is there adequate ventilation for your particular shoot? They loved to shoot in abandoned buildings. There's no ventilation system. Never gonna make it. Madona. Russell is a ventilation specialist and a safety consultant for SAG. After that's TheStreet Actors union, which also represents some NPR employees, and she's also a safety officer for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Earlier this year. Those unions, as well as the Directors Guild, and the Teamsters got together and laid out basic safety guidelines for productions. Russell was a consultant on that project. We just had to look at absolutely everything because on a film location, you got trailers. You've got the venue itself. You've got places where they do make up. You know, It's just really a mess. And if one person tests positive, and then another and then another Production could get shutdown in October. The Sun the same tabloid that leaves the audiotape reported that production on Tom Cruise is mission Impossible. Seven had to be delayed for fear of a covert outbreak. And, of course, the lease cost money. But Dr Nesbitt says keeping people safe on a movie set goes just beyond money. It even goes beyond keeping people in the movie industry safe. That's NPR's Andrew Limbaugh. Muir listening to all things considered.

Schools Work Around The Pandemic To Provide Holiday Concerts

"This is the time of year when many parents crowd into schools for a school holiday concert. Which is obviously not happening in most schools in 2020, so schools are adapting. Here's Peter Medlin of our member station. W N I J and DeKalb, Illinois, a course of kids belted out holiday favorites. Parents packed in an old stuffy gymnasium, jostling for shaky camera position to get the perfect Facebook video of their child in there Elf costume in the holiday concert. Not so much this year. Instead, some schools are getting creative in an effort to deliver some desperately needed holiday cheer. Mary Beth Kona is the principal at Spectrum, a small private school in Rockford, Illinois. Today they're filming the innovative Elves. Holiday show slash music video. He says. This year, there will be no sneaking out the back door after your kid's song ends in this, they're going to get a nice close up shot. Every kid's gonna get to be seen on the video multiple times that they can share with many family members. Like thousands of music teachers across the country, Super Tse's spent most of her time trying to teach remotely from our basement. Right now she's here with her students sporting a Santa Claus facemask and making this video you'll be the only time most of her students will be together this fall. Puts herds class after class into the camera shot while trying to keep students spread out. Notice. What that way your circle Evan, colorful circles doctor ground where each student performs 6 ft. Away from the others. I know groovy now. Kindergartner Luna practices her classes song as they're getting ready and ensues, Mark. Action for the families who chose to learn remotely this fall. Their kids are gonna be recording themselves dancing at home and will be sliced into the final show with everyone else. Workarounds like this are happening everywhere. Maggie's Bradley has the National Association for Music Educators, which provides training for music teachers. And although the pandemic presents significant challenges for all educators, music instruction is particularly difficult were the ones that always want to be shoulder to shoulder to do things and celebrate, so it's been difficult? The students have missed it because they want to perform together. But also the teachers. Spotty WiFi make zoom band practice is really tough and sometimes confusing, but it goes beyond that. Pandemic continues to highlight inequities and education students without Internet access and schools that can't afford instruments to a student stuck with no tuba. That means pivoting to something else, like providing software so students can create their own beats and rhythms. And like this school, finding new ways to perform for an audience staying at home. Felix is 1/4 grader here who plays the Alto sax. It's a little crazy, but I mean, at least I get to see all my friends and flown my instrument. As have to wear a mask he looks in his classmates are now lined up to record the show's grand finale parade. Cameron's gonna be right here soon. So we met in the northern end of the Bronx in a big, empty public high school where there were a bunch of custodian sort of jamming open windows to improve ventilation and get fresh air in windows that, in some cases seemed to have not been open for a very long time, And we kind of folded ourselves into these little desks. He's super tall, so he sort of had to squeeze himself in there. We sat 6 ft apart, and I asked him, you know, tell me why This is so important to you What is really needed to use for the CT? Could you ask a simpler first question? Okay. What you have to understand about Bill De Blasio is he came into office, promising to be kind of the education mayor. He has always said that education is His top priority that reducing inequality in the public school system is his sort of biggest task. He also genuinely believed that schools should be of them. They need this. The simplest thing to say to begin is they need this. It's not optional to them. And what he said is he sort of made the case for why in person is so important and why he thought families needed the option of Going back into classroom. I think much more deeply. There is There's so many things happening here so many things right on his decision. And then he also told me Look around us. Look at New York City right now. The city has been here old people say, really have been rolling. We're the envy of the country. He had these incredibly low positivity rates. And he said, if any place conducive to it were the place that can do it. I would much rather be criticized for we try. Even if it didn't work out of the way we hoped then we didn't have the courage to try. So you're not planning to delay this time? I have Very clear plan and I'll always listen to concerns. I watch the healthcare situation. I'll listen to substantive issues and people raised them. But the plan is the plan. Let's make any last questions. We'd you know, non relationship between So now that the mayor has laid out his argument For doing this. How does he actually start to reopen the system? system? So So very very quickly quickly After After the the mayor mayor says says he he wants wants to to get get schools schools open, open, it it becomes becomes clear clear that that this this is is basically basically the the hardest hardest thing thing he's he's ever ever tried tried to to do do as mayor. I mean, the sort of logistics of it are just dizzying. The task start piling up day after day, hour after hour. One of the biggest immediate tasks was that the mayor gave kids and families a choice of whether they wanted to come back into classrooms or not. So all of a sudden the city had to create to school systems out of 11 for the kids who were going to be home and one for the kids who are going to be back in the classroom. At least part of the week so that they could rotate in and out for social distancing. So that's one whole logistical nightmare. And then there's just actually getting the school buildings ready, which is Absolute enormous undertaking. New York City has well over 1000 school buildings. Many of them are over a century old. They have windows that don't open. They have h backs that have been broken for years. They have radiators and heating systems that maybe have never worked. And you had to basically transform what New York City classrooms looks like, right? So as the mayor starts going through this enormous to do list there starts to be a growing resistance against his reopening plan. Children cannot focus on school work if their family members and futures are in the hospital or dying. Children cannot learn if they're dead, many teachers, saying We don't feel safe. We don't think it's right to go back into our 100 year old school buildings and teach kids in a mask and just hope that it's safe. We will not be an experiment. We will not die so that the academy gets after work. And so how does the mayor responded? That's been having teachers in the streets, saying they're afraid of dying in the classroom seems like a pretty important obstacle, so at the height of this sort of period of resistance and protests and fear and skepticism about the reopening plan The mayor kind of has to come up with a way. Good morning, everybody of common people down. Well this morning we're gonna talk about the most important piece of reopening this city restarting this city. And that's starting our schools up again. And so he comes out and he says Okay, folks, I hear you. We understand the anxiety. We understand the fear. Because this city's been through so much, and I have a plan to keep you safe, and if it isn't safe, we don't do it. It's a simple as that. And so he kind of introduces this menu of safety measures. So what are we doing? You've heard some of it before we're using is wearing a mask all day. It's social distance thing free priority testing. It's having a nurse in every school building, making sure that teachers Kids staff all have the personal protective equipment. And then finally, he says, we will not Reopen our schools. Unless the city Infection rate is below 3%. You have my word that I'm going to shut down the whole school system if we ever reach 3% positivity. And how does the mayor explain how he arrived at that? 3% number what it's based on so at the time, the number that was kind of floating around there for when your alarm bells should start to go off. And when schools and other things may not be safe was 5%, we're hearing 5% a lot. And I think basically part of what happened. Is that the mayor? His team looked at that number and they said to the city we're going to do you one better. We're going to come in below 5% as a symbol. It was a promise. It was a way of saying I'm going to set the lowest, most conservative threshold that's out there. And that is proof that I'm taking school safety really, really seriously in this pandemic, and does it

Utah governor issues statewide mask mandate amid virus surge

"Utah Republican Governor Gary Herbert has declared a state of emergency and ordered a statewide mask wearing mandate. Herbert and the Utah Department of Health late yesterday issued executive and public health orders requiring residents toe wear face coverings in public at work and when they are within 6 ft of people who don't live in their households. We must work together to keep infections low until the vaccine is available. Therefore, tonight, I'm declaring a new state of emergency to address hospital overcrowding and to protect intensive care unit capacity first, because scientists and medical experts overwhelmingly recommend mass as an effective way to limit the spread of covert 19. We took five charter buses last week, the hospital so we could space our kids out so It's a mass to tell you truth with four coaches calls you're trying to coach your kids win games with all that over. It's tough, but I feel like we've done a good job with our kids. I think we need to be out here down in the southeast part of the state. You'll never have to convince Mark Rose of the need for football. He played for the legendary coach Pat Dye at Auburn. He's been a high school head coach for 23 years. He's currently at Russell County High. And he was the fifth fastest in Alabama TTO win 100 games, So it's notable when Rose says kids shouldn't be playing during a pandemic. Yeah, I mean, it's flat out child exploitation. Of course, kids want to play. But we are charged to protect them, and he can't Rose says because of a lack of testing. Kids get tested when they show symptoms. But in the state High School Athletic Association's Covad protocols there's not a testing policy, and that he says, is reckless and dangerous. We're breaking every rule that every doctor in the world says. We're not going face to face school yet. We're running players into each other all week and send them home untested. And then on Friday night, they want us to go out there and run him in 100 of our sideline and 100 on the other sideline. And All we know is that nobody out there have been tested. Rose says an asymptomatic outbreak on his team landed a 33 year old assistant coach in intensive care for nearly two weeks and sickened a player's mother. The risk of spread is greater, he says. In his rural county, where many of his players live in multi generational homes, I guess what coach Rose would like to do. We have a state or some entity, paper, the testing for all the students and the coaches. Ron Ingram is Theus, assistant director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. That would be admirable. If the funding was there. It's not in Alabama or most other states. Ingram says. Alabama acknowledges the risk of football and Corona virus, but believes it can be mitigated with safety protocols. And he ends. They still need to figure out whether football is the potential spreader. Mark Rose fears right now We don't have enough data to say that playing football up that really that same teenager if he goes to the local McDonald's on a Friday night with his friends That same risky still goes back home to the same parents into the same grand parents. Rose was bracing for a showdown when he made it clear he would not coach his team tonight in their season opening game to protest playing without testing. But this week, the virus intervened.
