"Dean said She was in the House chamber on January 6th. But even she says she learned something in preparing for this trial. You think the American people have a takeaway as well? I think so. I think that most people were horrified by what happened on January 6, but the House managers put that into context. I'm pay a lot of attention. Public affairs. But there are a lot of things here that I remembered, but it never connected with this, and I think most people are in the same position. Where were the managers most effective in pressing the case. I think they were most effective and showing the pattern of former President Trump endorsing violence how close he had become too far right groups like the proud boys on the oath keepers. Three percenters and how much he had said over the years endorsing violence. His basic argument in the trial was that you shouldn't take him seriously when he used words like fight. Let a lot of other people use and I think they showed that taken in the context of how often he had advocated violence and endorsed violence and approved the violence after that happened. That it was fair for his supporters to understand that their call was to violence. The former president's attorneys countered by saying, You never actually heard the former president use the words I call you to violence or something that would be Technically or or more most precisely and incitement. Where were they effective? And where did the president's Council fall short? I think they were effective in showing that the president has approved of storming the Michigan state capital earlier and had praised the people who had done that violently. They had been fighting and he did not say I wish you'd been nonviolent. He said. Liberate Michigan, hey, had applauded his supporters who had tried to run. A Biden Harris campaign bus off the road in Texas at complimented it, uh, brought attention to it. When the president repeatedly praises violence, it's appropriate for his Supporters to think that that's just what he wants them to do, and I think putting all those things together in one place. No one of them was terribly persuasive. But in law, it's possible to draw inferences from a pattern and I think the House managers Presented a very compelling one. House manager Madeline Dean joins us now. In fact, Congresswoman Good evening. We appreciate it any victory tonight in getting seven Republicans Good evening and thank you for having me. I'm I believe what happened tonight was a victory for America that we documented for all time. The dereliction of duty extraordinary high crimes and misdemeanors that the former president Is guilty of. So it's a sad victory. But that is the victory. We were struck here by by something that you had said during your closing argument that you were in the House chamber on January 6. But in preparing for the case that you had learned Something in the scope of the horror. Do you think the American people learned something as well? I'm certain they did, you know, And the perspective is that I was inside. So I did not have access to television. I did not know what was going on. S o. I had no idea the numbers the volume, the The evil kind of assault that took place. Um, but I believe that I'm confident that Through our thorough presentation of the case as let's so well Dyke representative and lead manager Jamie Raskin that America saw the gravity of this case the gravity of the wrong the gravity of the incitement bites. No less than the president of the United States on a coequal branch of government at a time when we were meeting enjoyed session with the vice president there. S so literally at the time for a couple of hours when we went to a state holding place. I didn't see a TV. So I thought maybe A dozen A couple dozen people had breached the capital and were wreaking havoc. We had no idea The scope of this thing, and sadly of the death and destruction of this thing. It was stunning Eye opening. There was no conviction, so there will be no consequence that the former president cannot run for office. Would you support center? I don't understand center at all. When you consider the gravity of the offenses that the president is guilty of Um and by the way, 57 senators said so in a bipartisan fashion the most bipartisan fashion ever and then immediately thereafter. I'm sure you noticed this. Both leader Schumer and Senator McConnell soak on the floor as to the president's grotesque dereliction of duty. S so in my mind, History will forever record that this president is guilty of the highest Of, um constitutional crimes. Remember, this is this is not a criminal court. This is about constitutional crimes. This is about a violation of his oath at their election of his duty. And so I I I believe America and history and the world will forever record that he's guilty of these things, Mitch McConnell said so himself. And then allowed himself not to vote guilty based on a technicality, which is strange because it was his very Senate who said we have jurisdiction they had jurisdiction. Congresswoman. We're grateful for your time. At the end of what must be a long day. Congresswoman Madeline Dean, one of the House impeachment managers, who pressed the case against former President Trump. "Experience of you know at often you heard the debate about I can't do it all online. So much of a college education is the interpersonal relationships you develop with you. And your. Wife whether you're so clubs, sororities fraternities in a classroom. I think those that networking opportunities certainly was. An enormous contributor to any. Ling that I was able to do after I got out of college because you meet people who are also ambitious and. Their. Diverse verse in. A A. number of respects, their diverse from location diverse by race just a real enriching life experience to go. To College and I think if you try to do it all online I'm certainly wouldn't have much of a football crowd. Isn't that the truth? But I I think right now, the colleges and universities are pretty much struggling because of the budget crisis. As. So if they have to do this thing online and they can't charge regular tuition that will put a huge problem that will create a huge problem in their ability to Mike because their budgets work. So tuition is a major driver in terms of their financial wellbeing and get a Lotta money from state if states or not nearly as much as they used to. So I think that's the biggest challenge is trying to figure out how you can make this work that you can deliver a Quality Education Bravo in same time figure out whether amateur do the Internet. Much person. Trying to make that mix and that's why I think. The development of a vaccine. So, important. As we move tickly into twenty twenty, one relative to economic recovery in our ability to once again socialize network it's been. This has been a tough year twenty, twenty, I saw. Option the other day. That had Stephen King's book for his latest Mystery Thriller was called Twenty Twenty. His latest are removing. It has been it has been one for the ages that's for sure and it just seems like You know just when we kinda get used to one thing it just a something something else flares up and it has been odd to say the least and I tell you one of the things. This is one of the I really was wanted to kind of kick around with you because you have you have had You've had such experiences so many different levels of the private sector, the public sector as a legislator and your route routes run you know five generations deep here the lone star state, and one of the things already that was happening was we were seeing a major influx into Texas I. think it was like fifteen hundred people a day before the pandemic, and now people are escaping these larger metropolitan areas due to some of the unrest and other things. How do we as you see it? Adapt as a state and get ready because I know. One of the places where you spend a lot of time Austin, it seems like every body I talked to that lives out in Silicon Valley and if somewhere out west. They're moving to Austin Texas in Austin Texas already outgrown itself years ago. What do you see happening for the lone star State and where and in our place in the grand scheme of things senator as we go forward. Texas has Through a lot of. A lot of legislative reforms.

"That was interesting hobby I served under. Squire privilege serving of about five different governors is. I would have to say. governor Briscoe was a mentor of mine and I've served on when George W was governor and The bullock can hobby were predominant where the two Lieutenant Governors I served under hobby. Is. An intellectual brilliant man. So bullock bullock was really Hands. All right. hobby was a little more passive although. I do consider Bill Hobby to have been one of my mentors but. we don't have enough time for me to tell bull. Will tell you one when I was chairman of finance he had a phone. We met over the annex as a pretty large committee room yet a phone he put on my head installed on my desk. Out in the committee always called it the read. It anyway was right there. So I remember one day I get a call from England. He was pretty irate because of budget wasn't moving as expeditiously as he thought, he said what? What is the hold up I won't say the experts but I Say What a world hold up on the budget were both. We have twenty, nine us with the House we were in conference committee. And Twenty eight are your. Things that you want done. And one of them is my things that I warned the. It was higher education. Anyway. Oh thank you click. I. That's so there are right. Bob Bullock Stories. That's why. Because, he is just I mean. A legend I mean, of course, a guy like Bob Bullet probably couldn't exist today unfortunately I I think because he could get things done but man what a larger than life character he was and do you happen to know? Jeb. I would y'all paths. Crossed at some point he's a mutual friend of mine in John's Ut guy play tennis actually Texas. and. I'm sorry I didn't my I think my earphones are about to run out. We're going to be in big trouble but what I didn't catch the last name Jim, her bayless Jim bayless violence. Yes. myla's yeah. That sounds very familiar. I. Bet Union will. So he told me the story about him because he's been on the the State Cemetery commission. For years and years, and for the listener if you are at the cemetery, you can see the flag at a from the capital all the way from the cemetery and that was that was Bob Bullock's doing. He wanted to make sure you could see the flag from the capital. All the way from the state cemetery is just stories like that little little touches that are in the capital. All the way to the state cemetery, and then things that happen that people will never know about for the good of Texas by the way I say that in a positive way, Bob Bullock was he made things happen that's for sure that he took a discussion about that one day because Jimbo at will I? Think it was had a marco there said here lies the author of tax bill. Bullock said adding said, you ought to get a plot at the State Cemetery Monteverdi said you and your wife can be buried there and he said said, we'll be setting up that telling stories over some of. That and he said he said the only hangup is you gotta pay your own mileage. Don't give you the plot. To, pay your mileage to get there like it but he did actually..

"Warrant Statewide water plan I mean you know you just you know sometimes you don't have the votes I. Remember One time, governor? Hobby said. He's asked me we'll have you given away the farm on Tort Reform Governor. The farm doesn't have votes. So. We had to go and do it again, right? Right. But I think. You Know I. I've be very critical of myself frankly looking back. I felt like. You Know I. didn't didn't hold out long enough on a couple of them, right? But But on the other hand you know. Has, the UNCANNY ability he can be flexible ready doesn't sacrifice principle. That's what always admired about him. So. You know again, he you go in you negotiate hard you may or may not get to where you want to be and you can always come back and do it again another day. The thing about the legislative session he's only got forty days to work it out right? So you do have a backstop. Yeah but. Is very good at that I. Think he's better than I was. Yeah but anyway. I KNOW WE STILL MISSED IN LA legislative process. Yeah and You know it's getting harder and harder to find He'll legislators light like Kevin and you what are the things that I'm asking for? You know personally as much for the audience and is. Whenever you're because you mentioned something they're like basically set out your non-negotiables from the beginning to figure out the that what that floor is just can't drop below. Whenever you and I know you've had been in a position. To where you hit that floor in an appreciation. have. You learned throughout your career that it's better to go with your head. Or your gut because I myself and I get conflicted also, I'll set a that proverbial non-negotiable. But then whenever I find myself there I'm like well, my about to just cut my nose off to spot my face. What would you say John? Is it your head or your gut it? How do you sort it out during those times? Well assuming a thorough people a lot smarter than I am. There are lots most people are probably smarter than I. Am I I think I, rely on my good. The instinctive, the feeling that something's just not right about this I think that driver has been a pretty good barometer for me throughout my career..

"It just from a perception when I was I looked a little young to be district attorney. I. had campaigned hard ahead a good organization. But. a lot of time I think the thing I learned most is for people to vote for you. They really have to identify with you. And you have to be. We're convincing that they can trust you and believe in you believe what you're doing. And So it was an important lesson of there's nothing quite like losing an election. It's one of the lows dislike whining. One of the high. Hyphen. Absolutely. I figure everybody needs to lose at least one election to really get. A baptism into life right I agree I agree it is an incredible experience. Well and you know you say something there John that reminds me I just I'm reading a book right now by guiding Simon Sinek Beria. Popular. Author. Speaker and consultant. and. He wrote this book Start With Y. And you touched on something I think that you probably in in that that race people have to trust you. They have to know not what you're GonNa do so much y you're doing it I think that's one of the things that a lot of political leaders business leaders. Product. Developers they miss you know. Senate he created what's called the the Golden Circle which on the furthest outside is like what we do and then inside, it's how we do it but at the core of it is why we do it in. So you mentioning that made me think. His philosophy on that. How going forward and because I know that as you went through your career, you you took on some things that were very tough positions for the state of Texas to try to convince Texans that things you know certain things in the gaming industry and that sort of thing. So that would follow you. So what disciplines did you start to? Implement, to scale that trust and help people understand the why of what you were doing? I think to some when you approach public office and you serve in public office, I firmly believe you have to have sort of business plan going in what you want to accomplish what you intend to do while you WanNa do it I think of all if I look back on all my careers I think I've had about fifteen. A. Lot of people say I can't hold a job. All been rewarding and exciting I just feel so blessed but I think networking is probably yet no one term that would sum up certainly your ability to succeed in politics. Now, politics is radically changed since Iran for DA and since I ran for the Senate. It is social media blitz. Now, it's quite different There are no secrets. Lecture they ask me said Hey. It was a graduate class. In business school and they said Hey tell us how how we can be successful how we can get to be sweet how we can be. Corporate CEO say well, two things don't get a Dwi don't get hooked on prescription drugs and. They were they were kind of stunned. But I said you know we'll see. So many careers messed up which just Really bad decisions like that and You know it is..

I. Have had a lot of red writers and so even though you're a different sort of an alumni as the former chancellor, which is no small, no small involvement there. Still. Red. The Red Raiders are making a mighty presence on the Texas tight podcasts which which speak pretty well at the university I would say you know Texas tech was a great school as one of the greatest jobs I ever had the. Privilege of serving and you saw blade bleed orange I kind of believe both ways. Yes. Schizophrenic when the two teams play I. I just have so many great memories of Texas Tech.
