Recovering Food Addict Colleen Y. Shares the Ups and Downs of Her Journey

"On the podcast, our guest is a recovered food addict, Colleen Y. Welcome Colleen. Colleen Y. Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here. Susan Branscombe Yeah, it's great. I heard about your story. I've read about your story and I'm looking forward to sharing it with our listeners. We're going to talk about your story and how you found recovery from food addiction. I understand you became abstinent at 55 years old in 2018 when you joined a 12 -step food recovery program. Talk about that and what brought you into recovery. Colleen Y. Yes, it was late getting into. I had never heard of any 12 -step recovery programs. I had never heard about food addiction. I was just a person who thought I had a moral issue that I needed to diet, that I didn't have willpower, that that was the only way that I could overcome the excess weight. I was getting up there. I was 250. I was up to 300 pounds when I finally went into the rooms. So up until that point, I just thought that I just had no willpower. But it got to the point where all I could do was think about the food. I could not function unless I was thinking about food. So that's what brought me into the rooms. Talk about you got into recovery when you realized that you needed help in this way. And then you relapsed after two months. What happened there? Well, actually, it was after five years. I was in the program for five years. So for the first two years following the program, I was good. I followed it. I lost weight. I was working the steps in the program. But then I thought I didn't need it anymore, that I knew what I was doing and slowly started deviating from the program to the point where I left it and just started doing diets again and the weight started creeping back on. But I was still not eating the sugar flower wheat. So that's what I considered as still being abstinent. But the weight came on. I was still eating high fat. And then finally, after five years, I just couldn't white knuckle the diets anymore. And I relapsed. And in that two months that I relapsed, I gained over 25 pounds and really came to believe that I had a serious problem with food addiction. I just could not function at all over that two months. And I just did not want to live anymore. I just did not want to wake up in the morning. It was a brutal experience for two months. For critical level food addicts, some of us can get suicidal, where we just can't see a way out and that we're always going to suffer from this and food controls our lives. Yeah, I prayed every night that I wouldn't wake up in the morning. And that was the thing. And then I'd be so devastated that I had another day in this disease and that somehow I had to function. So talk about this history then. You got into recovery, five years, doing well, lost weight. Then you relapsed. Tell me about the weight that went off and came back on. You said you gained 25 pounds. You got up to 300, but were you close to maintenance weight during that five years? I had never been a normal weight my entire life, never. So I got close. I had lost, by this point I started at 300, so I was probably down to 170, which was just absolutely new territory for me. Then I gained some weight back, but then I knew I could not get abstinent on my own. It didn't matter what I did, I could not keep it. So I tried to go to Renasant and Renasant was running an outpatient program and I signed up for that. And then just before they were going to run it, they contacted me and said that they weren't prepared to run it anymore. And I was devastated. I ended up getting in touch with Dr. Vera Tarmon, who is a director at Renasant, and she told me about, in fact, was going to run their intensive for their students. And Esther usually does it in Iceland, but this time she was actually doing it in Ontario where I'm from. So it's like three hours away from me, I had this opportunity. So I jumped at it and I went and did that intensive where Esther Helga had Amanda from Shift come in and run the intensive. And it was mind -altering. It changed everything about the way that I looked at food addiction, totally, totally opened my eyes.

A highlight from What a Weird Week: That's a Big Ol' Ball of Cheese! Fri Sept 8 2023

"That's a big old ball of cheese. This is the What a Weird Week show for Friday, September 8th, 2023. Hi, everybody, it's weird. This is like crazy news here. Really weird, weird tale. Well, I got a great show for you today. What's so wonderful? Weird stuff! Hi, friends. I'm Scott. This is What a Weird Week, a show about weird stuff from this week's news. If you want links, audio, video, photos, warm thoughts. Just remember show notes dot page. You can find it all if you get to show notes dot page 10. Here we go. Season four, episode 50, first published on Friday, September the 8th, 2023. Kicking our weird news of the week off at number 10 is Venice, Italy, to start charging a cover, a cover charge of five euros for tourists who want to enjoy a day trip to Venice. This is only on select days to start. Seems like they're just trying it out. People who live in Venice are often outnumbered by tourists. And that can be a drag when you're just trying to get across town to your dentist appointment. And somebody is like, will you take my picture by this boat? Look, everybody, I'm Marco Polo. I imagine that plays out on a daily basis in Venice, but I'm not sure. Will a five dollar cover charge stop over tourism? I highly doubt it. If you've paid the money to go to Venice and then they're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, you can't come in, it's going to be five bucks. I mean, I do have an uncle who would be like, five dollars. I'll wait in the car. But most everybody else, you're going to pay the five bucks. But will a five dollar cover charge make a ton of money for the people of Venice? No, no, it will not, because they have to pay to administer this program. Can't even get a cup of coffee in Venice, probably for five bucks. Right. Less than a cup of coffee. Do you think maybe they're testing this out and someday you'll show up with your five bucks to get into Venice and they'll be like, oh, no, we've raised the price. It's five dollars twenty. Or heaven forbid, five ninety nine. Seems like this is a story to watch nine. Our number nine story is the man and lady suspected of busting a hole through the Great Wall of China because wanted to make a shortcut. A 38 year old man and a 55 year old woman who were working nearby have been detained while the investigation continues. They're suspected of using an excavator to bust through the Great Wall to create a shortcut for their construction work. I take a complicated view on this because I mean, yes, it's an ancient wonder to the world. That is an ancient wonder. The Great Wall of China. But if you've got to go all the way around every time you forget something in the truck or somebody is like, oh, Bob's here to sign those papers. Oh, Bob, the papers are in the truck. I got to go all the way around, Bob. Bernice, cover for me. I'll be back in six hours. You know, if it's that kind of scenario, I could see the temptation. The excavator is sitting there and you're like, punch a quick hole through here and I'm back at the parking lot. I'll be back in a jiff. Not saying it was, you know, the right thing to do to the ancient wonder. Anyway, story is continuing, investigation continues, so we'll find out. I guess maybe they don't have surveillance cameras all along the Great Wall of China, so they have to do some old fashioned detective work on this. Bringing the weird news of the week to your ear holes. This is what a weird week eight number eight in our countdown of the 10 weird news items of the week is gnomes in the news. Gnomes in the news. Police in the UK are warning people about gnome crime. They say if you find a mysterious garden gnome in your yard, you need to contact the cops and go on high alert. That is me paraphrasing. It could be that robbers have put the gnome in your yard because they're scoping out your place. It's a way to see if you're home. If the robbers come by and they see their gnome hasn't been touched, it tells them that there's probably no one at your house and your place is burglar friendly. If you've been involved in a mystery gnoming, contact your police. I got to say, this one seems like an urban legend to me or something, but I mean, there are real statements from police about this. It just seems like something you would see on Home Alone in the Home Alone movie franchise, Home Alone eight gnome alone. That one, you know, that could be animated. Hold on a second. Writing that one down in the million dollar idea book. Let me know in the comments if you have Steven Spielberg's address. I'd appreciate that. A personal phone number, maybe personal phone number. I think I'd be better on the phone. Seven Mullet World Record. Tammy Menace is a nurse from Tennessee who hasn't cut the party in the back since 1990. This is what a weird week six number six on our countdown. Man interviewed on BBC TV by mistake is back in the news. In case you missed it in 2006, a fellow named Guy went to the BBC for a job interview. At the same time, the TV channel was expecting an expert also named Guy to do a live TV interview. So one was job interview. One was an interview on TV. Well, the long story short is the wrong guy ended up on TV and he did his best to fake his way through it. Well, Guy Cuney is the editor of the technology website News Wireless. Hello. Good morning to you. Good morning. Were you surprised by this verdict today? I'm very surprised to see this verdict to to come on me because I was not expecting that when I came. They told me something else and I'm coming. You got an idea of it. So it's a big surprise in a big surprise. Yes. Yeah. There's a link in our show notes to the whole clip. If you want to check it out. An incredible case of mistaken identity on live television. Well, that fellow that was from 2006. That fellow is back in the news because he would like some of the income that's been generated by his viral video moment. Basically, that's the story. BBC, their YouTube has gotten, you know, maybe five, six million views of the incident. It's been meme -ified and all that. And now he's thinking Guy is thinking, hey, any of that money coming my way? What about Guy? Where's Guy's money? That is me paraphrasing. But if you want to watch the video, read the article. All of that, just click the show notes, show notes, that page number five this week. Record breaking cheese ball is enormous. I don't think I would pronounce the name of the Mexican town correctly. So I would encourage you to read the article. We link to that. But this Mexican town in four hours took a whole lot of stringy cheese and made it into the biggest cheese ball in the world. Type of cheese is called one of the names for it is quesillo. I'm probably saying that wrong also, but it's a stringy cheese in the same way you would make an elastic band ball, you know, out of collecting elastic bands. They took all this stringy cheese and just started wrapping and balling that cheese and kablami. They got a cheese ball weighing in at twelve hundred thirty pounds. It was around three feet across the cheese ball and experts in action. It's hypnotizing is something to see. The video is in the show notes. Congratulations, cheese ballers on a wonderful world record accomplishment. It looked delicious.

"Joe Biden just released a man under the world who is responsible for the death of thousands Thousands He is the greatest in this sense I mean most horrendous arms dealer that's ever existed He is armed terrorists militia groups civil wars particularly in Africa where there's a lot of African individuals a lot of black people who have been slaughtered as a result of what he's done And he wants to be celebrated today And I'm reading The Huffington Post and I'm watching and CNN's going on about how important this is because the American who's been returned is LGBTQ and a black person What the hell does that have to do with anything Well Mark it doesn't have anything to do with anything And I think you're right to stress just what a monster Victor boot the merchant of death yes You're right he's responsible for deaths of thousands He's responsible for much more than that Amputations torture rape child soldiers across the continent of Africa as well as Latin America and Asia too And there's a reason why Vladimir Putin has wanted him released for the last ten years Remember Victor boots only 55 years old This is not a decrepit old man who is dying in prison This is someone that is going to be right back in the heart of the Kremlin working with Vladimir Putin and other mercenary leaders and his war in Ukraine and is consistent undermining of American interest around the world So irrespective of who we received in return for Victor boot we should not have released him because he is going to havoc against the United States and to get some Americans and it creates incredibly dangerous precedent for the future If Joe Biden will release the merchant of death if you detain an American and imprison them who won't he release

"F. I am 6 40. You have Dr Wendy Walsh with you. I love these three. Our show's producer, Kayla, we get to really get into it. All the information is given in these three hours have stuff for people in relationships. We have stuff for people in therapy. We get colors. We had social media questions. And now can we talk about your dating profile? I'm sorry. I spent a lot of time swiping, you know, because these companies often ask me to you know, they sponsor me sometimes. So if you go on my social media, and you will see my recommendations sometimes, um, so I go onto these apps and they give me what they call it like, I don't know, White list my email. So I make like fake profiles, and I'm able to see what's really going on. And, um You guys are making some mistakes, some real mistakes and I want to make it really clear. Um, let us start with the gentleman. You guys are so visually wired. However, you forget that we are visual, too, in a way, and we want your pictures to be good. So I don't care. If you need to do this bathroom, selfie more than anything in the world. Do not have that toilet behind you. You see women, and there's research to support this have a lower threshold for the feeling of disgust Because and our anthropological past we had to keep germs away from babies so the babies wouldn't die. And as a result, we get disgusted very, very easily. Silly thing. I was shopping with my friend. Today She was helping her daughter stock an apartment because she moved out here to go to college, and we went to target and we bought a bunch of food as well as the towels and pillows and things you need for apartments, and one of the things she bought her was a toilet bowl cleaner. Now it's from target. It is clean. It is new. It is in plastic. Was loading the carts afterwards. I couldn't put it anywhere near the food, right? I'm not gonna even put it in the basket with the food. It's clean, new right at the factory, But my brain is like you don't put a toilet cleaner near food. That's why you don't put a delicious looking gentlemen near a toilet. Okay. So think about that in your pictures because some part of her brain is going gross right now. Also speaking of those bathroom, self east, gentlemen, you know, we're swiping men of all ages. All physiques and you are you may be the fittest. 45 50 55 year old. You may think you have six Pack eight pack, can you do you work hard on this? Please. No shirts off If you're over 40, really, we know don't you think? Kayla, come on. Wait, No, because if it's like a Jason Momoa type guy, and he doesn't have a shirt on, I'm not mad at that. I'm not mad at a fit guy with no shirt on. Remember, we swipe and right beside is a 28 year old who looks a lot different. There's a 28 year old. Have a shirt on No. You see you get the instant comparison. They forget they're not being compared to other 50 year olds on the APP is that women are looking at the full age group. So by comparison, It's like Mm. Right. Yeah. See what you did there. You keep the shirt on. Keep it on, ladies you to bikinis in your fifties. Come on. Now, I you may have a rock and hot body. You are competing with Instagram models. And it's the comparison things side by side during the swipes that are problematic. Alright, um and on that note, ladies unless, and it's perfectly OK for you to be looking for a hookup or short term relationship. But you can't tell me that you can't find a boyfriend or a guy who won't commit if most of your shots in your profile our body shots Because what that said, even if it's like a tight sausage dressing, one with a low cleavage and in a bathing suit, another than short shorts and another, It's like Stop. He thinks you are there for sex only. Even though you think Well, I have to compete with all these other girls. No, you don't. Not in that way. On that note. Also, he's up on the filters. Ladies, nothing makes men are more angry than to show up for that coffee date that first coffee date. And you suddenly don't have to be beauty filter on Have a suggestion for you. What about if when he comes out on the date, he says, Whoa. You are so much hotter than your pictures, and he immediately is energized by you. When I had a dating profile. I put a lot of very regular normal pictures and 100% of the time. When I would meet for the coffee date. They would say, Wow, you look way better in person. Isn't that a great way to start a coffee date? Yeah, Yeah, yeah, It's sort of under, uh, promise and then have them be blown away. Here's the thing about the colour red gentlemen. Seriously. There's actually data to show that if you wear red shirt, you get more swipe rights. Just a red shirt as your main profile picture. So if you happen to be an Angels fan, where that red shirt I went to a Yankee game that Yankee Angels fan Well, I think the Angels game I think they were like played a few nights. But I went Monday night because my boyfriend's like a hardcore Yankee fans, so I had the Yankee had first of all, how many people fit in Angel Stadium? Can we just pause and say, I think my boyfriend and I were the only two people wearing masks. And it was so packed and be more screaming and yelling and putting aerosols right out of the air. And it was hot and the air wasn't really moving. Guys, Please think about this. Anyway. I noticed more Yankee shirts than Angels shirts, but the Angels shirts are red. So where one of those if you want to Um Need. I say this, but I do need to say this smile. Do you seriously if every single picture and you put four headshots? Are you trying to look tough guy or doom and gloom or ladies? If you're trying to just do the duck face pout..

I didn't know about it, but, Yeah, I did read it, But so you can't stress over little things. You've already come so much in your life. All right. You have good memories. Yeah. Bad memories. But the the only important thing is the present dull at the past. Drag you down. Don't let it you know, affect your future Frighten you feel good in the now small issues concerned, be forgotten. Well, that is so true. And it's interesting because people have different perspectives when it comes to what they really want to do in life. So sometimes people look at Oh, man, I've got some extra time I'm gonna go out and have an adventure. I'm going to go skydiving or bungee jumping or I'm going to go for how alligators or whatever it is. So So, those are those adventure type. Hadn't thought of that. Yeah, you have. Then you have actually that some consideration, I guess, right? I did have. I did hunt for our leg. Wanna wanna? Yeah. We had a little baby iguana that was on our sea walls. No, they slam like that. Yeah. Wow, that's come so fast. Unbelievable. Yeah. So in the second type of person is somebody who You know they're really keyed in on their relationships and their family. And this is all about just spending time with family. And that might mean traveling somewhere, you know, getting tickets to the you know, Disney world or whatever. And then there's other type of people that just want to have fun. They want to go on the You know the carnival cruise ship or whatever. They just want to be in a place where they can always have fun. And then there's The last type of person, which is the more of a peace oriented type of person that they want to have comfort, you know, and it kind of like when you think of comfort. It's like, okay, I'm gonna sit down. I'm gonna eat like the background and cheese that we as a comfort food that we mentioned a little bit or maybe just different, comfortable things that are going to surround them that are peaceful and they they don't have to feel stressed out about anything and So I thought it was kind of fun. When we're reading the article about the macaroni and cheese flavored ice cream. It's It's that's just wrong. Well, I don't know I scream is already perfect, apparently apparently. Combining the two comfort foods, the ice cream and and macaroni and cheese, and they've done a good job at it. It's this Brooklyn based family and ice cream company teamed up with Kraft cheese, and apparently they made a masterpiece. So I'm excited to try it. All right. Okay. I'm excited about a lot of things. And of course, one is that we continue to help people all over the United States with our Triple Crown solution. "It's five o'clock somewhere to Yeah. Uh, yeah. Hey, I've got a number of concerns. Um, number one. I don't believe that there is any effectiveness to it. And part of the reason is that, uh, the numbers just don't add up as far as where the ratio of people you're having getting the shots versus the Potential of winning probably the majority of the people that signed up Were people that already had shots when you look at the million minutes signed up. But secondly, I think there was a lot of Paul Sabra ties Ng When they promoted that they were giving $50,000 a day away. Because on for the only persons that are eligible for that $50,000 a day are those that get the shots that day. There wasn't the way it was presented when people you know when it first came out. So I think that there's there's a lot of negativism. And once you start with false advertising that way people get discouraged and they're not going to hear the snow anxiousness to sign up for it. Yeah, and and I don't know if false advertising is the best term. It certainly was incomplete information. I remember that. They said that at the time because I listen to the full news conference, But you know what? That's not. You're right. That message did not get through in terms of those daily prizes.
