Dr. Daniel Amen Shares an Amazing Story About an Overweight Friend
"Tell us about one of the friends you talk about in this book where you met with a friend who was overweight and you loved them enough to say, hey, you probably need to lose some weight if you want to get your life right. And he did, and he lived a better life. Oh, it's just such an emotional story for me. Mark and I had been friends. He's a psychologist, and we go to the same conference every other year. And we're having dinner at the restaurant, and I see him injecting himself with insulin. At the table. And I'm like, Mark, how much, how tall are you? He said, I'm 6 feet. I said, how much do you weigh? He said, 244 pounds. And I calculated on my phone as BMI, which was 31. And I'm like, dude, you're obese. And I also saw him order chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and a brownie for dessert. And after I saw that, I couldn't just stay quiet. And I said, I'm like, Mark, you're obese. And he's like, Daniel, you're so cold. I'm not as cold as you're going to be when you're 6 feet under. What's the matter with you? Why aren't you paying attention to your health? And any of the dessert. And I help. As I love him, but when we were at that conference, two years later, he'd lost 52 pounds. And I was having lunch with his wife. And with Mark, and he was telling me how much better his sex life was. And I'm like turning red, but it's absolutely true when you get physically healthy. Blood flow, you have better blood flow to your brain and it's just so simple. You have to wonder how many people that go in and they get these very aggressive pharmaceuticals how supplementation will tell us supplements in a second after the break and just losing some weight could at least improve some of their symptoms.

"High school, Aryan was just getting started in Athens. Okay, the B-52s, you know, Ariana would just get started. And Michael saw it and the rest of them would play and you brought up this and I want you to emphasize this a little bit. 40 watt club. Georgia club. I mean, the not owl, which used to be out for country out there off of full 41 north. We're seeing and there's still all those scenes today. These new bands, these new, you know, that new music is coming out of. But Michael sobbing and they would do a buddy of mine, Steve McNeil, he used to go down and to Athens and they would play a set and then they'd sit out in the bar and just hang out with everybody. And that was another cool thing too about it is, you know, I never got the chance to see REM play at the 40 watt and one of those impromptu sets. But what I did see is a lot of members of REM and other bands, David schools, or Mike Mills, or maryam, just hanging out at the bars. And when I would go, I mean, I remember there was a brief period of time and I believe it was the summer of 2000 spring of 2000. I had gone to see a band called the old 97s at the 40 watt, and I was going up to the bar to grab a beer and I looked over and it's Mike Mills next to me and I kind of gave him a nod and a knowledge we was, he obviously had no idea who I was. And then a little while later, radiohead played a concert at Stone Mountain in a very small venue. It was amazing to be there. And I saw Mike Mills again, he kind of bumped into each other, and it was that sign, again, he didn't know who I was, but he knew that I knew who he was and we had both been too amazing concerts and brief period of time and he kind of gave me that sign of acknowledgment like, all right, kid. You obviously have good choice in music.

Newsmax's John Bachman on the Magic of Athens, GA
"Both of us being Georgia boys, both of us, you know, in this world and we're both in media. We both do all of those things and look, you can spend hours talking about the Biden administration and even dumb Republicans and everything else. We all get that. But coming from Georgia, there's things that matter. Georgia football, music, Arby's barbecue, a cornbread, anything, anything I think food number three, anything under that, you know. Food in general, but barbecue and for those of you for those of y'all in Texas, it is pork, barbecue. Let's just make this this out now. But anyway, those kind of music comes back. But also, and I've gotten dealing with this a lot when I was in Congress when I dealt with the music modernization act and I got to know a lot of these folks. But when you went to school in Athens, what most people don't realize is that Athens is almost an amazing, it's almost a Detroit of the south. And growing up, talk about it because you and the university of Georgia, you know, went over there in the music scene over there, the downtown saint is just an amazing place. It absolutely is amazing place. And that was part of the appeal. I mean, you grow up, if you grow up in Georgia, you hear about Athens, you know about REM, you know about the B-52s. Right when I was graduating high school, I was really starting to listen to a lot of widespread panic. And I was there in the spring of 1998 when widespread panic played in downtown Athens right there in the middle to see him play. And that was right before I started college, I was still a senior in high school and we had just lost in the state or the state of the regional baseball playoffs. My buddy Michael Nelson and I drove to Athens, didn't have a place to stay, but we went and watched widespread panic. And I remember I called my dad the next day and this is before cell phones. I caught him from a pay phone at a waffle House on three 16, and I said, dad, just checking in, letting you know everything's okay. And my tad said, what happened last night, John, I woke up and I read on the front page of the AJC that there was widespread panic in Athens last night, and I said, dad, dad, it's just a band.

"Whether that's from a pastor at a church or from the news the media what what. I'm hearing in politics. What i'm hearing from social media in different people's opinions and things like that of not just taking everything for face value in really i would say to me. It's not something that i like. Proclaim out loud or anything you know to me like a a slogan to me is to question everything because if you're just quick just quickly taking something at face value and not at all questioning it. That's where i think people get into trouble because and not having any discernment when they're just like oh so and so said that. So that's that's it. yeah. I believe so strongly that all of us need to try to practice this gift of discernment in their life. In in the way we help establish this is by studying. The word of god because when we're in the word of god and we're in the truth and we're in that place of of understanding and in obtaining knowledge of the holy one of who got is and who christ is in our lives and we're learning about scripture when winds of doctrine and false things. Come around or wasn't chiefs clothing. We are able to have a higher sense of that. Because we've been so much..

"Need a place to to meet and so it's somebody having an idea of what's the most feasible thing we could do to create a building or just a riff over ahead write that would we could take that and make it a model so then we could go to the next the next village and do the same thing right. I mean that's somebody having that that ability to be like this is what we're gonna do. We're going to go there. We we can take these materials and we could build this structure right. I mean that's a practical sense of it and obviously who who who's the most famous craftsman of all right. I mean jesus was a carpenter right. So i think the last one. We're going to talk about on. This episode is discernment and i know for. This is one that actually. I is scored pretty high on. That doesn't surprise me at all of the five. So they give they give you five at the end the five. That was the number two for me. And for me i can. I can see it. I can see it in my own life. I can see and you've probably heard me talk about it in in past episodes if you've been listening where i talk about having to make decisions in my life and having you know in praying and asking out about that and and really having the discernment to make that decision of no this is. This is truly what i'm supposed to do right. Or that's truly something that i need to stop and things like that not just in those areas but even just in areas of having having a feeling of like something's not right and you know what what is it. And what do we need to change in. I'm saying impractical sense and even in like a spiritual sense of having that like this is. This is not good. Yeah i would definitely say that describes you a lot. The disarmament means a smart judgment of something or to discern is to separate what's true from what's not true. I john four i. One says beloved do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they are from god because many false prophets have gone out into the world by this. You'll know the spirit of god. Every spirit that confesses that jesus christ has come and flesh is from god in every spirit that does not confess. Jesus is not from god. This is a spirit of the anti christ of which you have heard that is coming and now it is already in the world.

"Eleven and it says and he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some as pastors and teachers. So that's talking about the fivefold ministry that's talking about the five areas when you look at a church that you see ministry and operation and it says in verse twelve for the equipping of the saints for the work of service to the building up of the body and christ until we all attain the unity of faith and the knowledge of the son of god to a mature man to the measure of stature which belongs to the fullness of christ. I just want to kick off talking about apostle ships in a very clear way that the bible was written by the apostles in the time of the bible and that was like apostles nowadays or people who functioned under the gifting of apostle ship are not supposed to go out and write new bibles or create some sort of new doctrine or philosophy or whatever that was for then the we have our scriptures we have the authority of scriptures we have that and so the gifting of apostles not necessarily that you are going to go out and write a new bible apostle means a person who is sent that you are sent out to do the work of ministry. You're sent out as an ambassador in the kingdom of god. I think an apostle in today's day and age something that we could really relate to if you grown up in the church. I've been around. The churches is missionary because a lot of times when we send out missionaries. They're going to spread the word. There's they're going to do some evangelism right but a lot of times. They're going to help people that maybe don't know god to help them. Know who got is and then train them to start their own churches right in there. They plant churches in other countries and train. These people to be able to have their own church and keep spreading the gospel. Right i think missionary work is very much along the lines of apostle ship. And maybe i'm off base. But that's the way when i think about it in today's day and age. That's how i think about it. Yeah i agree. I grew up with a father who is very motivated by this gift. This was definitely the way he functioned in ministry was with an apostolic gifting and one thing he did and he did it well was he traveled and he would help train up ministers and establish leadership in churches and hope churches get established and get a good foundation of scripture and doctrine and then he would release the leadership into operation and not necessarily maintain control of it but rather release it into a mission of establishing the kingdom of god in that specific region all over the world and then still being somebody that they could go to you know. How would you handle this. Or what do you think about that right. And and he would then go back to those places in and do some ministry right. It wasn't just the okay. I did this and now see you. Later is definitely leading of leaders. A ministry to ministers and i had the privilege of a lot of my lifetime from the time. I was a little girl. I can remember traveling with him well into my adulthood. Even more fulltime capacity traveling with.

"Test dot com gives in what trish already been touching on. You know that it's to organize. You know the fine the resources and getting people together to to accomplish things right. That's what she does. We can week out basis. it is just. It's interesting because she according to this test and it's not you know doesn't live and die by right we just kind of. It's nice to get an idea bright but according to this she didn't score very high in that. But i see it every week that she has the gift. Yeah it's definitely a motivational gift. Because it's a gift that you used to serve other people and a gift. That blesses the body of christ so i think it's probably something many people can pull on and some and develop a leadership gifting that as you grow in your leadership. You probably develop this gift especially if it's something you are chasing after desire. I know for me an area my life. I've really tried to help. Establish has been leadership by listening to different leadership podcasts. I read books about leadership. that's definitely a skill. i'm trying to hone to be somebody who people want to follow. And not just somebody who barks orders but somebody who really can get in new it with people and serve with people and so people look to them and wanna follow them but maybe it's not a natural skill of mind but it's definitely a skill that i've been trying to help establish show. This is something. Maybe you feel like god wants to grow you in. I think there's a definite possibility for anybody to grow in the gift of administration and if you're skipping ahead you can see how we're talking about administration and we're hearing the word leadership as well and that is another gift but i think you're gonna see that a lot where you're going to see these different gifts overlap. Not all of them are going to overlap with each other. But you're gonna see little on you know. I shouldn't say little ones you're gonna see ones that definite lee sound similar but i think there's there's just those areas that can be a little bit. You could be a leader but maybe not be as great as doing the administration side of leadership you know. So there's there's a little polling tug of war and some of them but they they kind of men together so the next one we're talking about is apostle ship which apostle ship is one that. I've historically rated pretty high on in various gifts tests throughout the years of taking them through different seminars or just different testing. And it's interesting. Because i took a few different spiritual gifts tests over the past few weeks and on gifts. Test dot com. I didn't necessarily rate on apostle ship. But i have on other ones. So it's just kind of funny to see how that plays out but i'm gonna read to you guys out of visions for verse..

"This episode. We are starting to get more into spiritual gifts. If you didn't listen to the last episode it was a more of an introduction to what we're going to be talking about over the next few episodes not sure how many it's going to take. We'll see how much time it takes to get through some of these so we're going to be talking about a few different spiritual gifts going over a little bit of you know some definitions of them going over some scripture that relates to them and try and do maybe give some today's real world. How how we see these and maybe how they apply in our own lives to give you some examples and if you also if you didn't listen to the last episode we talked about doing a spiritual gifts test and so for those that are following along. We did it on gifts dot com and on that website. They had twenty two different gifts. You go through and answer some questions you just do some ratings and it kind of gives than they whatever formula based on that they give you what you scored the highest in. So we're not gonna go into deep detail of oh trish trish. Has this one. And i have this one or whatever but as we go along when something hits one of the ones that we had then we'll we'll bring that up and we'll we'll talk a little bit. How maybe we see that. And how i see it in my life how trish season my life and vice versa so to start off this episode we are starting with administration. First corinthians twelve twenty eight says and god has appointed in the church. I apostles second prophets. Third teachers then miracles then. Gift of healing helps administration's various kinds of tongues all or not apostles are they all are not preface are they all are not teachers are they. All are not workers miracles. Are they all. Do not have gifts of healing do they. All do not speak in tongues. Do they all do not interpret do they but earnestly desire the greater gifts and i show you a still more excellent way so to other four guests that we are talking about in this episode are right there and that would.

"Include not even similar at all. I fucking hated it. Yeah it's a creepy song to. Yeah and she hears it because when she turned off from the trash can and looks and one of the windows she sees a little boy dancing record player dancing in her house so she likes starts the lee walking in the next window. She sees him dancing too so she takes off and runs inside when she gets to that area record player in the little boys. He's got so then she's looking around and we see still angled from outside the unlike the swinging glass door into their kitchen. Someone throws it closed. Just close it's fucking on. So she goes to the door to go see like what the hell happened and a creepy little boy running and gigging the damn hallway. I can't. I can't yeah i need. That was keep creepy out. Because you know there's nobody that house true you're right. It's just her and her son was in a coma unreal so which she goes back to her son's room. Yeah it's trash it's completely trashes. There's all kinds of stuff on the floor. Whatever she closes the door behind her but then something it right back up yet so she runs down the hallway to like chase after those creepy little boy and girl stop and she goes into. Her son fosters room. And there's like a wooden rocking chair in the corner. Oh it's behind the doors behind door so she close the door behind her when she gets into the bedroom standing with her back against the closed door and then she looks to her left behind like the bathroom door. There's this wooden rocking horse thing. Just aggressively rocking the corner. Stop so she likes slowly walks over to it and like closes the door limit so she can see. Nothing's on it right. When she grabs a horse. Get to stop shaking or rocking the bedroom door. Flies the fuck up and can't stop it. There's too much there's a lot of movement in the house right now. So she then goes through next door. Which is dalton dalton's room. He's in his bed. Obviously he's laying there and she sees something like under the opening under his arm. Wall do like a shoe sticking. It looks like curtain over it. Yeah so she grabs kind of weird but it's tiny like h does not she gets is like hockey stick to like bring with her great weapon love it and she goes over to little curtain boxing and like put the hockey stick in there and moves it nothing but then the arwa doors fly open on top of the creepy old lady like jumps. Out of the arwa scares the shit. I mean her. It was a little boy. I thought it was old lady. I don't know it looked old and creepy thought. It was a little boy with the hat. I don't know either way. Something live in. That house jumped at her and just took up out of the room. Yeah at this point. She's having some serious breakdown she's like. Why the fuck of my goal. Yes i mean. I get it. I'd be the same way i can't. I can't again do it so later. That day josh gets home and finds that his mother is with a potty and his wife is talking to a priest. Yeah and he's like this sounds like a bad joke pretty soccer or whatever. She tells him what she saw just few hours ago. Yeah and says that whatever was in the other house has now followed them to the new house hundred percent. Wasn't the house ozhan girlfriend. It's the energy that's with you guy. So he basically tells her that she's just overreacting which take pillai down. Your host tackle is down happened. We say every but his mother jumps in yes. He's like basically like. Why are you here to around. Yeah i'd like she's being comforting and she's making t deal with her mother teresa and it'll make you happy to shut up. Shut up a bad. She says that. What rene is saying israel yes in that. She is seen for herself. She had a dream the night before. Yes i can't this park. I can't so she starts explaining her dream. And of course we get the full visual per dream. We do lucky us so her dream was of in that house that she never really been in before so she was in their house and she's like walking down that hallway toward syndrome right. Who and she walks into dalton's room and she sees this like dark figure like a shadow figure a half these crazy as long as and fingers and it's standing next to his bed and she asked the visitor like what does he want and he picks up his creepy as long as my. Gosh yeah and slowly points to dolan and says that he's there for dolton asked it. Who are you an at said. It was a visitor. I said what do you want. It's dalton and she says that the voice that she heard in that dream like still haunts her throughout the day and then the camera pans over to josh as she's telling the story and that demon face is like next to josh's face and only the mom sees it and she freaks out. I freaked out because faced freebie us. It's like this black and red like demon face. That was right next to josh. I yelled and this is what i yelled. Fuck you say wrote in my notes. Got me so good. Here teams one. Okay well listen. I'm i can appreciate the fact that he was able to scare you. I was having a hard time with with the face and it looked like somebody's face. It just been painted black and writing finding creepy. The i thought it was so creepy idle and it might be if it was like a different shape but it looks like a person's head for short did i'm just i i needed. It didn't make you jump at all or anything i didn't. I think it was a part good or in the movie. That i jumped and i think i stated it. Okay because there wasn't any other accu is moving so she breaks out and when we heard something like falling in another room as lab. It's indulgence room. Course which is now locked. They can't get in. They can't get in so they are able to well. I'm pretty sure that josh busselton. I think he busted i guess so. They got through the door. The whole room is a disaster trash. The bed is moved. Its dolton is laying on the flu. They basically paper like following. It's a mess a mess and there's a bunch of like bloody handprint on the sheets on the bed. That are off. Disheveled everywhere and dalton is laying in the middle of the floor. Yes so joshua rene obviously run over to him to make sure that he's okay. Yeah josh's mom is standing at the doorway and just frozen. Yeah.

"To Quantico to be investigator for the DEA, did not happen when I thought it would. Typically, they only invite about 70 to 80 people a year and did not make it in 2019, COVID happened last year, obviously, and that kind of slowed things to a halt. But two weeks ago, they called me and asked me if I wanted to go. And I said, yeah. So in July, July 18th, I will be going to Quantico for the next 12 weeks, and I will be becoming an investigator and I am super excited about that. That's awesome. Yeah, you've been talking about it for a while. So congratulations on that finally. Coming in. And okay, so July. So you'll be basically like July to November. Ish. Early October. Okay. Cool. I don't know how much connectivity I'll have. I know that they're really kind of tight on I'm not allowed to bring a TV and not a lot of burning my phone to class, so stuff like that. So I'll tell you what man if there's a bad time to be shitty and baseball now is the time because I want to be doing a whole lot and that's fine. That is fine. So there's your Segway to baseball. All right. Yes. I was gonna start like, what are the questions that Tim post was, you know, your thoughts on the cubs, I know you haven't been watching them probably a whole lot, but you probably have been following, you know, how they've been doing and so any thoughts on the cubs in terms of how they've done to date and the rest of the season. Yeah, like this is a real eye in the sky kind of thing. It's kind of like what I believe is happening versus what may actually be happening. But it has been a surprise, I very much went into this year thinking that they were going to tear it down and my only regret was that I thought that the teardown might not bring in the people ultimately that you want to get. Like you see, when they traded you Darvish, I didn't necessarily think that they were going to go wholesale then. But it did seem like that was certainly the move and in my opinion, the correct move, right? You don't want to, it's great to chase a dynasty, but you don't want to be an aging dynasty. If you think about a team like the Philadelphia Phillies that were like a powerhouse and they really kind of got themselves in trouble when they were kind of extending guys really kind of passed their point of value or the point of return at that point. And then you get stuck with bloated contracts and then nobody will take them and you've got to be not only do you have to be bad, but you don't even have the financial resources to invest in other areas to get better quicker. So it's like, I was okay with all that. But if they try to Chris Bryant for a couple of nobodies, I mean, it's kind of like, well, you know, that's fine, but I wish you could have gotten more. That said, that's not been quite the narrative. And I guess it's not hard to see. You know, they kind of remind me of the kind of remind me of those meddling like early 2000 Cardinals teams where it was like a core group of holiday and melina and roll it, right?

"Poisoning. Milk don't dare open. it's don't they open zag lie there. I know i listen to outsiders the walking dead podcast right here on southgate media group. You're welcome for the blood ladies. That's true yes okay but the pirate movies very well done. I'm not gonna argue. I agreed to be a little hard-driving from they weren't but yeah. Harvey three-month toyota. The bat don't fly by day. Meanwhile home home. Alfred and don't spare the horses. Meanwhile getting driven away by his butler. Exactly all right. What you think will fire weird. The only thing i really have like we should've that of villains thanks. Sorry probably the second issue true those very like. Oh yeah we forgot says. Give him a motivation. But i like the artwork Gas i mean at the batman staple i get it with solid story on. The artwork is great We get to bring up match trauma i felt. We don't read up enough honestly. He's still a very broken man. I mean he's up as a bad goes out and beats up people at night. He needs therapy. Yes in paying the therapists badly. Can we give a male. They're actually and see what happens. We'll see what happens. Yeah so. I enjoyed it. It's a average is a solid because yes they could have done a little more for fifty but they had. The five may have concept that they wanted to do. And i'm thinking they're pretty surprised at augusta fifty issues with the bat books that are going on but they didn't want to ask for too much. They they wanna be the squeaky wheel through. But i mean again. This is the nineties. I mean we're in prime territory. Batman we don't we don't really tell you never really hear a lot of people talk about shadow of the bat. Just do true. True shaw pots. I definitely it's the red headed stepchild of the batman nineties books. At least until you know as real long so good stories. Maybe a weather really necessarily as universal as the main two or which is glad we cover them. Yes they're really need stories like elax can really need stories. We got batman urban legends issue. Three to talk about. I thought we know we already talked about it last time. Yeah which one are we talking about that legends of the dark knight that one number one. Yes it was digital first but yes. The first print came out this time. Yes yeah we were waiting on the bright side my bad but yes no i mean so what you thought about the story the art was. I like the art in this now. I was very macabre and a good way. Yes very dark. Which is what batman needs. I like when they make it though. Gothic in darn in creepy event is dark increase exactly using the shadows nation. Should we also get shadows as they should also appearances by mr freeze penguin and joker classic. Rogues lineup definitely basically a trying to buy this chemical cover a lot. And i wish i could find this in print as he founded on my guys not caring for somebody book. Yeah okay. I guess our only ordered a few kind of sat there. I don't think they're really pushing. This book is much. 'cause you don't really hear a lot of people talking about it either. So for some reason it's just a digital. I like a lot of digital. I get lost in so that actually comes out like the poetry. Now i've noticed. 'cause i'm like yeah i'm like why wouldn't you permit you know you're giving it like you know how to different kind of shelf lives. It's like yeah push it again. It's like hey. I know i know you don't like digital. Hey it's in paper on. I do like the punny business that we're doing with bad night with an end of then good night with k. All you guys are so cute. Look at you go jim. Also you'll gordon are is very good in this specifically jim gordon. I love the look. Jim gordon his book. And it's like you don't know when this takes place in continuity and i don't care and that's okay honestly they're going to that classic coke like he got ridler. mr free. Mr freeze jokers scarecrow while like those in the classics. Those are the those are the heavy hitters like. We're kind like put on that. They're letting you know and we kind of mystery and maybe a new roka's the other sky and the gas mask trying to sell the gas to the highest bidder and we're out we're out in gotha at night. Everything's creepy and spooky. The i'm not bad looking. I mean there's even moments in this aren't allowed to me the like the animated series like when he pulled that gun. Mr freezing playtime over. Yes i love how i love. Pay one that his corneas can't blame a burglar trying like it's just like no it's like they don't have any pressure at you know what i mean. Does that make sense able to tell this story. They don't have any pressuring expectations. They just.

Don't we don't do that that often. In the comic books like every movie of course has to have it but like in the complex. We actually don't do it for batman but it's leiderman we do it all the time so this really caught me off guard but we're talking about here. That is probably the ruling pitch trauma obviously so makes it with a lot of narcissism psychologist. That is my best. Guess what percent so. He has overcome all that really.
