"And from school is looking a bit different these days, even with a delta variant parents are reluctant to hold the kids back from going to in person school. And that means student transportation has to adapt as well. There is a severe driver shortage out there, and transportation departments are doing everything they can. I mean, it's crazy. You talk to some of these people. This is what they look for. We we call it bleeding yellow. A lot of directors are driving routes again. A lot of office. Off mechanics are taking on more responsibility in terms of driving. They just want to get these kids to school safely. Associate editor at school Transportation News. Taylor Hanen has been taking a closer look at how student transportation companies have had to pivot during this phase of the pandemic, especially with the driver shortage. So have we been seeing longer routes since the drivers have had to drive farther to pick up more kids? Why not necessarily seeing longer routes? We are seeing more tears. So that kind of touches on Bell times a little bit, You know, a group Students. Perhaps elementary will have to be at school earlier. So school bus drivers will go out, run their route. Pick up an elementary kids, drop them off and then go back out a second, sometimes 34 times, potentially to get all these kids to school at the different belt Times. Parents are using other alternatives such as carpooling and having the kids bike and walk to school wherever possible. But the school districts aren't above finding other alternatives, either why districts are using alternative transportation or transportation network companies to get some of these go to the school? So that is another option that school districts are using. Every school district is different, and every state is different all because of the different masking requirements. Some school districts are requiring masks. Some governors are saying you can't require masks and so.

"Happiness money researching demonstrated how much more happiness. We can experience when we shift our thoughts for money to time. Her laboratory and field. Experiments revealed that just implicitly. Activating the thought of time motivates individuals to spend more time with friends and family and less time working and those are all behaviors that are associated with greater reported levels of happiness in contrast explicitly. Activating money motivated people to work more and socialized less which although could be more productive does not increase happiness. So i wanna talk about one of the examples in her study she examined. People are research team examined people in a busy cafe at a university. They looked about eight people and when the people entered the cafe they were given a gift card for free which is great but in exchange they had to do a questionnaire in this questionnaire they had scrambled words which were used to prime either time money or neither so depending on the questionnaire some people got words that prime time the feeling of time some people got words that prime the the idea of money and some just had a neutral on that was a controlled group so then they were left to do whatever they to do in the cafe. I think the time spending a cafe with anywhere from two to one hundred two minutes to one hundred and twelve minutes but there were there were observers in the capi watching what the participants did the participants dino who is observing them and they observed whether they talked with people talked on the phone worked what they were doing and one. The people exited the cafe. Participants were then presented with a second questionnaire in which they had to report on a five point scale to the extent the felt happy and satisfied. So what do you think. Perhaps they just prime youtube the correct answer but you may have guessed participants primed with money worked more than those in the controlled setting make sense some degree and participants primed with time work less than those in the control..

"I quickly talked about time. Athlons earlier. But i want to touch it again. So time affluence is the feeling that one has sufficient time to pursue activities that are personally meaningful to reflect to engage in leisure time. Poverty on the other hand is the feeling that one is constantly. Stressed rushed over work. And behind. So you can see just between those two definitions of time applemans and time poverty. How important time is in our lives and for many of us. It seems that we've been prescribed this notion or idea that the pursuit of happiness comes explicitly in the form of money. Once i obtain exit honorees once. I obtained that bonus once i obtained an investment portfolio of x. Amount or once. I have this mount this much savings in my account. I will be happy or i will do whatever i found myself saying that many times and i know a lot of people i talked to have the same experiences and we see this everywhere. In fact we've even coined a name for some of this. We call it delayed gratification. And yes i know filleted. Gratification can and really does play an important role in our lives and has helped many people. I'm not disputing that. At all in fact a research paper showed that people's self reported financial well being increases with the more savings. we have which is a form of delayed gratification. so am not arguing delayed gratification. At all i make an observation. That i feel like sometimes. We take delayed gratification. Too far and just like anything. The more extremely get the potential that it might not have the same benefits. So that's my question is have we taken this relentless pursuit of money too far are we ignoring the seemingly important things in life like our time because time is all we really have right now. Are we attaching too much of our happiness on how much money we have or we don't have an interesting research showed that there was an american research paper but it showed that americans happiness levels. Sorry i'm going to pause there and making a statement or on making that if there is a canadian paper maybe there is. It would have the same results nonetheless. This paper showed american happiness levels have in fact remained constant fifty years right. Americans happiness levels have in fact remained constant over the last fifty years. Despite large increases in the country's financial wealth over the same period of time are cars have become bigger faster. I mean they're even driving themselves right now. Our houses are fanciers. Bigger than more garages. They have larger bathtubs. Are wardrobes in. Our houses. Have expanded tenfold yet. Our happiness levels remain the same. What's going on here. Ensure we've certainly moved the needle forward with some positive changes. People are challenging this narrative but for the most part i feel like this prescription to happiness still remain saying the same money is the source central source to our happiness. The pursuit of money is what's driving us to desire to be happier and we see it all the time we go to school we graduate. We work hard. Who try to get promoted. And we spend the best hours of our days getting ready for work going to work and coming home from work and then when we get home we rush through cooking supper we think about work we think about that email and we try to save a little bit of money this six pack to this idea of our time versus money. I'm not saying that we all need to quit our jobs. I'm not seeing that at all. it's not feasible it. It doesn't work that way..

"It's all about acquiring moments that make me feel excited to be live. It's all about having a healthy relationship with money. So that i can go and do things that are really enjoy despite not having a massive amount of money in the bank account and i really feel like. That's where true change lives themed author. Seth godin suggest. I think most people who are doc are so because they're attached to outcome and they've reversed engineered from the outcome and funded so true when we look at when we look at are focused on replicating what other people because we look at their desired outcome. And then we try to set. Gordon said reverse engineered into our own lives but often we're left feeling dissatisfied and disappointed because we're not that person so we probably won't be able to do exactly what that person did however when we flipped out around and don't look at the outcome so to speak more. So what did that person do. And how can we apply that to our lives. I feel like lots of change can happen. And that's something that kind of naturally emerged through. The podcast is listening to people's journeys to see what they've done to increase their overall wellbeing as they navigate their own money stories. And i think that's the power of interviewing people and hearing their stories. And that's why i have interviews and not solo sessions like this again so sessions great but the way that i envisioned this podcast other people's stories because all of us are embarking on our own unique journey and when we hear about other people's journey it often allows us the time and space to reflect on her own journeys our own life stories our own life money stories. In seth godin book the practice he suggests that the magic relies in embracing the practice as he calls it the journeys that create our stories. The practice is the steps that take you unleash. The unique magic being held inside of you and not what others think of you and when we apply that to our money stories. That's where i really think. A lot of power comes. Is that when we embraced our own practice. Our own journey our own stories. Then we can really go in words and go below that waterline to really examine our thoughts feelings and beliefs. We have around money that will allow us the time and space to unleash what we want. Not what other people want from us or what. We think other people want from us. 'cause i strongly believe this idea of money scripts and i've talked about it before but these monies scripture so influential and we only can change modifier in them when we go below that waterline and to me the fact that you're listening to this podcast shows that you're curious about money stories and our relationship with the money you're open to the fact and you're ready to explore your past present and future money stories and i'm super excited for that so i wanna go back to this idea. Time verse money time affluent again..

"I hate to say it but dumber okay. So why. Am i talking about this. Because as i mentioned earlier the aim of the podcast is not to just give you a whole bunch more of information. There's nothing against sat. there's a place for acquiring information in respect. Everybody doing that but my thought is is that our brains can't handle too much information and real life doesn't really operate in a way that allows us to take on so much information and something that i do wanna talk about is that we've all heard of the success stories like bill gates steve steve jobs or other startup companies that went from operated or companies in their basement or other individuals who went from zero to millions or billions of dollars despite those stories or possible. The chances for this type of change like hitting this massive home run or less than one percent so. I'm not saying that we shouldn't aspire to do that. But what i'm saying is these stories are cool sexy interesting. And they sell a lot of clicks and Magazines but the thing is is a lots of people sign up for that race and there's only one winner my goal on this podcast is to look for people who are doing things that we can implement as average people immediately and when i say average. I'm not seeing we can't be Can't aspire for more we absolutely can. But what i really feel that we can all start to feel and live. An enriched life without having the millions and millions of dollars in the bank account. I'm not saying that it's not good to have Money in the bank account and savings not seeing that all at all. What i'm saying. Is that this. Podcast is for the people who want to start living in incredibly enjoyable and in rich life as soon as possible all while still striving for their financial goals and this comes to the point. I talked about time versus money. Research has actually coined a name for this. And it's called time affluence and as the podcast continued on throughout last year. I realized how many of our guest focus on this idea of time. Affluence which means having control over your time and it's been shown to have won the greatest indicators of increasing our levels of happiness are experiencing more moments of happiness. Inner lives seneca. The great stoic. Once said many times an old man has no other evidence besides beside his age to prove his lived a long time and back to my slogan to get more life out of my time..

"Bill an act around money and as dr claunch talked about on our episode number nineteen for the most part were totally unconscious how these monies scripts stories are showing up. What i found fascinating about episode number. Nineteen dr brad clients. Is that how he just talked about for most of us were this actor actress in our money stories play notice script that was given to us from generations ago and were totally unconscious for our. We're totally unconscious happening. And that's as i mentioned early the potentially dysfunctional part of money stories. So the podcast. Back to the podcast. This idea of having stories and unconscious stories is why i interview the people i do because my goal is to help us a or money's stories so that we can all get more life out of our time. I'm going to go back to this idea of financial education. i believe in financial education. I thoroughly do. But i also look at the statistics. Were becoming more debt. Were as i mentioned. Money is still one of the top stressor in our live. Despite all this advancement in information and technology of how information lands on our gas on our mobile phones however information gets to us innovation has been wonderful for humans it has. There's no question about that. However i think it's really also up our open the floodgates of information especially personal finance information but just information general that we consume on a daily basis. We all know that we're consuming way more information than generations ago and that's whether it's the never ending wave of emails the constantly digging notifications are the perpetual social media updates or those seemingly urgent text message that literally go off all the time we feel compelled to keep up with all the information we check the social media status. We check the news apps. We have this feeling inside of us that were missing out. If we don't check it we get a sense of dopamine when we get a new ding or notification our social media.

"They're both extremely wonderful people. I suggest if you haven't listened to episode number nineteen and number twenty three to go give it a go give it a listen but one of my other mentors james mcparland. His is quote a realistic with me. The most powerful story you'll ever tell about yourself is the story you tell to yourself. James mcparland was on episode number. Seventeen of the podcast. He's a fascinating individual and this idea of stories and the stories we tell ourselves the most imp- are most important ones in our lives. It's so true because the stories that we tell ourselves inside of our head turn into our reality and we see that with money the thoughts feelings and beliefs that we have around money. End up coming out of us in the forms of our actions and we call that the financial iceberg where it has been said that the tip of an iceberg represents only ten percent of the actual iceberg. Were ninety percent of the as berg is actually below the ground our pool of the ground below the water so when we look at our financial iceberg that suggests that our actions the things that people see on a daily basis that only represents ten percent of the entire story below. The waterline is where all of our thoughts feelings and beliefs around money influence. Our our actions. Above the waterline. And that's why. I feel like information like acquiring more personal finance information. Hasn't been as impactful as we want. And i could say that because i look at the statistics here in canada and the us is very similar. That money's the top stressor in their lives despite the vast amount of information that we have we consume it and we try to change. Our behaviors are actions but as the financial iceberg model shows. That's only ten percent of the story and when we only focused on that top ten percent. We try to use willpower to change our behaviors and i know from experience willpower forbidden at best..

"You know, Fred, just I'm done being surprised. That's just who he is. Now. It's what we expect out of them. You know, it's It's cool when you draft a guy like him. I remember how excited we were. I'd be lying if I told you I thought he'd be this guy that he just continues to get better and better. Ah! You know, he just He makes up for a lot of things out there and his leadership is he's a quarterback of our defence. Awesome. I think Dre Green laws a difference maker when he's out there, you know, so much of football today is played in space, and he brings an element of speed and then the ability to tackle in the open field in today's football because it's played horizontally. With all these jet sweeps, and you know, as well as vertically, you're going to be asked to make a lot of tackles in space. That's not easy to do. And Dre does. It is You know, I'm not. This isn't hyperbole. I think he does it as well as any linebacker and football. The number speak to that. So having him out there is a big plus. We look forward to getting him Kwan and Fred out there together, and now we're now we're really It's solace is cooking with gas, and we're looking forward to that. John Lynch joining us on the only guest line here on the Tolbert, Kruger and Brooks Show. I have two questions, John One question about your offensive line. But I want to give you the chance before that question just to shout that group out much maligned over these last couple of weeks, and they performed admirably last week. Specifically Daniel Brunskill. And the job and in front of him with Aaron Donald, and he passed that test with flying colors. Awesome. It was it was. You know, each week we win a game we have aboard here and we do the players of the week. It was a no brainer. This week. It was the offensive line as a whole. They had a huge challenge in front of you in front of them against Aaron Donald, who was Plain as well as anyone's ever played that position, and you know he had been given. Everyone fits. I think obviously we had a real good plan for him, but At some point, it comes down to mano e mano and usually with their and it's It's a couple of Monaco's against him that mono, but there were there were. I think someone in our personnel department charted 34 times, where he lined up. At or on the shade of Daniel Brown school and brought school had his best game of the year really stepped up to the challenge, as did Laken, as did Mike and Trent and been Garland, You know, unfortunately, went down late in that game, but that group played phenomenal. They've been taking a lot of heat and You know you can't have thin skin. You got to respond, and I was really proud of that group for the way, they responded. They played at a really high level. So you mentioned Ben garlands injury and that's where I want to go with my question. Obviously, he's on I r about that injury. And can you give us any update on Trent Williams? Understanding the importance of both of those guys. But especially again. You're going in no inter newengland. Your running game is on point. Right now. You want to keep Garoppolo. It's comfortable and it is happy. In the pocket is possible without those two guys, If you don't have Williams, what is the challenge? How do you keep that moment? I'm going with that group. Well, we're hopeful Tohave Trent News got better today when he was out there on a limited basis. I think transfer here to play trance been a tremendous addition to this team. Lots been, you know, made of the last couple weeks as what he hasn't done, But, man, you know, 90 95% of the time. This guy's he's outstanding and, ah He played at a really high level last week. He makes us better as a group. He's been awesome and you can tell he's having fun plan. So him being out there today. I wasn't surprised, and I was happy, though. Ben Garland That's a big loss. You know the center position this year. I think, um, you know, you think Western rich birds coming back at some point we had him on the PP and he's really struggled and and at no fault of his own, you know, it's It's been tough for him. He's working his tail off. Way still remain hopeful. Just don't know. You know if he's gonna find his way back, and you know if if he is it's going to take some weeks, So Ben Garland had stepped in and you know we re signed him this year because we knew Western, you know, was going to take some time to get back, and then it really performed at a at a really high level, then works as hard as anybody. You know, it's so good out on those screens, and you know, it really fits our offense. Well, unfortunately, just another freak deal popped popped a muscle in his calf. So that's gonna be some time. Um, you know, we now turn to thoroughness Grass who I think backto training camp. We signed a guy Jake Brendel, who had played in the league. And he opted out about a half hour before the opt out time because he was high risk. Kind of blame him. I remember him showing up in my office and going out and that stinks. But understand, And then we go sign Spencer Long. Spencer was here for about three days decided his heart wasn't anymore. So he retired, So I think we're down to our fifth center. If that makes sense across to, you know, came in and ah You know, started Game one. If I'm not mistaken and played at a really good level, he did a good job for us. So we trust him behind that. We're working hard to find guys play that position. We asked for a lot of flexibility, versatility at our O Line group, But that's a That's a niche position where everyone forgets like the most. Important part of play is taking care of that Quarterbacks center exchange. So it's important and erroneous is gonna hold it down and we're confident in his ability. I wanted to ask you about the intersection of analytics in football, because, well, you're not on the field making those decisions. I'm sure you're involved in and how could come about we see way more teams go forward on fourth down Now. You guys went forward on the fourth down past taquito forth into it. You're on 40 for which isn't a gimme. Go forward at the 44. Yard line. We see that scene teams now go for fourth and one throne. 19. It's crazy watching with these teams do we saw the Texans go for two at the end of the game to try to get up nine, which no one's gonna convince me that the right thing But whatever..
