"Different direction from the rest of us explain why and how. Yeah, Hard to David. So it is not the first time The UK has done this. Obviously, we know that the, uh last time they did, it was when they decided to use a much longer dozing interval between the 1st and 2nd dose of Fires of my own take and the aesthetic vaccine. This time they've decided to give just one shot of the Pfizer Biontech vaccine to those aged 12 to 15, even though there is no actual clinical trial that was done, um, to support that view. But as I've said in my my piece today, I do think that this is actually the right thing to do in this setting. Well, why is it the right thing because the kids are stronger or because there's more of a risk to them. Well, if you're going to bit of a combination of things, so first of all we know Excuse me that the heart inflammation so called my card ideas or pericarditis. A much higher after the second dose of the vaccine. So if you just stick with the first does your risk is a lot lower second to 12 to 15 year Old age group really doesn't isn't it? Let's put it this way, the lowest risk. Of the age groups when it comes to, um, infections and the the impact of an infection and then on top of that, I think there there's enough data to show that one does can have a pretty meaningful impact on Catching an infection and also the severity of disease that comes after how long that lost. We don't know, David, but certainly, um or a few months. At least, I think you're going to be seeing some good results from that. Should we be thinking about only having one dose of the fighter Beyonce for all of us? Not for all of us know, certainly not for the older adults because, as it is, even with the second dose it looks like after a few months, you might be seeing a slight decline in the Greater protection against infections with the with the vaccine, and most vaccines should really be dose more than once it teaches your immune system that this is a this is a pathogen or an invading body that it needs to take seriously. And spend the energy to develop a really good deep immune response to So while we have you stand, let me take advantage of you Talk about boosters because I saw a report that the United Kingdom looks like it's going to start doing boosters for adults. They're going to start a program next week. What is the evidence right now on boosters? Yeah, I mean, just just around. So that specific point with regard to U K decided to do that. Remember that? A lot of the people in the UK, especially the older folks have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, so obviously the longevity of that vaccine in terms of protection. Has to be taken into account. And there's some new data suggesting again just like the Pfizer biontech one that perhaps that Wayne's, too But then with regards to the third shot as I put it, and remember, the UK has decided not to go down the road of using sanity parties. Sorry, all the what do they call them, then? Vaccine passport is the phrase that I think I've heard a lot, and it's also not necessarily pushing for people to have masks indoors. Although it's a guidance that they should, so I think they're using this as a way of protecting people over the winter months and not wanting to force anyone to expand vaccinations and Allow people to go indoors to mix without worrying about a massive resurgence and infection. Well here in the United States were interested in this quite a bit. President Biden has been. I think it's fair to say pressing for the third shot of the booster was what I would call it but then pressing for it, And there's talk that it might start as soon as next week. At the same time, there seems to be some disagreement. Among the scientists back here. We had to FDA senior scientists resign apparently because they think the data aren't there. You know, that's you know, I mean, the thing is that the data on there until the data are there. We just have to wait and see what happens. With more data coming out of Israel. More data coming out of the UK Both countries that started vaccinating quite early, So we just have to wait and see. Uh um What that data shows. And don't forget. The FDA has a meeting this Friday to talk about exactly this point, so I'm pretty sure we see some more information. Finally, Sam come back to Children for a moment. Do we have any sense of what we may have approval for under 12? Yeah, I think finds has been very clear, and I think the regulators have also said that as soon as that data is available, that it will be filed and probably before the end of this year, and that's going to be quite interesting to see the information and also the The safety profile, which is a critical aspect here. Do we have any reason to believe that it? Actually Children may be more vulnerable to some of the negative side effects from the vaccine? Well, if it follows the same way as um, the situation with Um, with the in the adults and the older population in terms of, uh um my car back and heart inflammation. Then you know it's possible, but it's very hard to tell. I think the highest rate Is in the in the folks between the 16 17 and 25 26 or 29 inch range, so We'll have to wait and see. They certainly are susceptible to issues with Covid. But we'll have to wait and see what the vaccine safety looks like Sam, as always, this is terribly helpful. "Thunderstorms in the evening. And a chance of rain showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. After midnight tonight. Sacramento Valley From NPR and W bur. I'm Robin Young and I'm Tanya Mosley. This is here and now today, President Biden is expected to talk to the nation about a new Covid 19 plan to curb the rapid spread of the delta variant. On average about 1500. People in America are dying of covid each day. That's more than at any point since March, and the number of Children contracting Covid is also rising. The CDC says the rate of babies and Children under four years old diagnosed with Covid recently exceeded the rate of new cases among adults older than 65. The president's plan reportedly will address six areas, including vaccines and mask mandates. Let's bring in Dr Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security to tell us more welcome, doctor. Thanks for having me. What would you like to hear from our president today? Well, top of mind. I'd like to hear plans for how we're going to bolster our testing capacity. Um, testing has been a topic that we've talked about throughout the entire the entirety of the pandemic, and, um We made good progress in expanding testing capacity. But unfortunately around the kind of end of 2020 beginning of 2021 testing capacity basically eroded as states had to pivot their attention and pull their resources from testing in order to focus on mass vaccination. We need to test we need to find infections, and unfortunately there's just not enough capacity in the country to do that's taking too long for people to get test results, and it's being hard for people to find where to get tested and to access testing. So you'd like a testing initiative to be implemented countrywide. What else does President Biden need to say today to turn this pandemic around? Is it even possible at this point? Well, I am very much optimistic that we can turn it around. But the pathway to doing so is to increase vaccine uptake. So there's been a lot of discussion as of late as to whether people need third doses. Frankly, what I really want the president to focus on is making sure we get more 1st and 2nd doses into the arms of people who have not yet Been fully vaccinated. If we are able to use vaccines to tame the virus and to take off the table, worries that people are going to wind up severely ill or die. I think our whole relationship to this virus will change and that will begin the pathway to feeling like we're headed back to normal. The doctor. This is a harder piece of the puzzle to take on right because I want to take a step back when the C D C put out guidance back in May two that fully vaccinated people To go ahead and stop wearing masks and and social distancing. Number of epidemiologists back then were alarmed saying, Hey, it's too soon to have this message out there. We need to be focused on getting more people vaccinated is the Biden administration at least partially to blame for this search that we're seeing right now. Well, you know really what we needed to remain laser focused on was making sure the unvaccinated get there. 1st and 2nd dose is And if the message deterred unvaccinated people from doing so, then that's bad, But I don't think it was necessarily wrong to say that getting vaccinated does buy you freedoms does make you safer. And I think, unfortunately, some of the messaging as of late has really modeled our understanding of the protection that vaccines really do offer. The harder challenge, though, is also to to reach those people who believe in conspiracy theories and other forms of misinformation. How do we change our messaging? To reach those people? You just laid out very clearly. What we need to do. But there are people in this country who are hearing what you're saying. And they do not believe you. Can we even do what you're saying? Given the fact that many people don't believe the facts? How do we reach those people? You know, I still remain optimistic. I'm not giving up on people. And I know that I've had many tough conversations with individuals who maybe start out a bit skeptical at first, but in hearing what their concerns are and giving space to their concerns, and Really just allowing them to get their questions answered in a nonjudgmental way. I have seen people change their minds, so I remain hopeful but it takes you know everybody and Lot of the data show that people may be more responsive to friends and families than they are, You know, nameless experts on TV or certainly government officials, one of the things I hear most frequently, and when I talk to people, and I they say to me, they don't know who they can trust. And I asked them. Can you talk to your doctor or your primary care provider? And many of these people don't have someone in their lives that they can talk to. But friends and family can certainly help connect them with the right information, and there's a built in trust there, so I think it's important for all of us to roll up our sleeves and and try to help the situation. Play a role in getting all of us vaccinated. One last question I have for you. The president's plan also will reportedly address Mask mandates and we know state by state municipality by municipality school district by school district are making these choices about mask mandates. What would you like to hear from the president in that regard? So I think masks remain an important tool for reducing transmission and certainly in areas where we are deeply worried about rising case numbers..

Do you still need to get a coronavirus vaccine if you've had covid 19 I'm doctor Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent. The short answer. Yes, but of course, it's a bit more nuanced than that. If you've just recently been sick, you should wait until your symptoms go away. And, of course, wait until you're outside the CDC's recommended isolation period. Same goes for if you get sick in between your 1st and 2nd shot. Wait until you feel better. It's okay to put a little bit more time between your 1st and 2nd dose. And contrary to any myths you may have heard you do still need two shots of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Even if you've had covid 19. "I think the efficacy of these vaccines has really exceeded most of our expectations as infectious disease. Physicians and so now the the important part is kind of getting people vaccinated enrolling out one question that we hear a lot from people is. Do we know yet if we're going to need to have boosters. We discussed the new variants. Is it too early to tell us or are we already starting to have some indication. Yes so that's a really great question. I think we don't have the final answers on that yet. But all of the trials that were started as early as back last spring They're still ongoing. Even though these vaccines have been approved for emergency use they are still monitoring the initial people who got the vaccines and testing antibody levels and so and that information will be helpful to understand whether we may need booster doses in the future the other part also relates to the the variants. And so that's an ongoing process where they're looking at the vaccines and they munity that they generate and how well they protect against these new variants and whether we need to make any modifications to the vaccines based on that the beauty of amarnath vaccine technology though is that it is Not very difficult to change The sequences That we're using and so if we do need to make modification it is possible with this vaccine technology to do that We just need to identify if in one that needs to be done now. You mentioned the. Vaccinations are currently approved down to age. Sixteen with the the pfizer vaccine In the question. I'm hearing from all of my families and friends are win. Are we going to have vaccines available for children. what do we know about that and is current research is ongoing about this. Yes i think. For for all of us as as attrition and parents and who care for children that's one of the big things we've been looking at since especially the vaccine became approved for for older adolescents and adults. And there's some some good news so definitely were visor. Both have active. Clinical trials are ongoing now for kids. Six months of age up to Fifteen years of age so age group. That's currently not covered. And just yesterday we had some really great Promising information released by pfizer in a press release which indicated that in their trial of boulder h. h twelve to fifteen year olds Boat a twenty two hundred. I think adolescents. The vaccine was one hundred percent efficacious against covid nineteen infections so no chill not teenagers who received the vaccine Got covid nineteen. They had an excellent antibody protection response even better than the next age group of sixteen to twenty five year olds that they were against And the vaccine was really well tolerated with no serious side effects in that each group. So that's really great and promising information that was just a press release. They will be releasing kind of more detailed data which will be sent to the fda to review and publication in scientific peer reviewed literature as well but Really great.

Take a listen He took the last year and and really invested in making the business much more strong on the other side of the pandemic, So we cut out $360 million in annual eyes costs with the goal of cutting out 300 million. So we beat that by 20%. The team did a phenomenal job which sets us up incredibly well for the piece that we have less control over, which is the recovery. We expect the recovery to really pick up steam and cute to S O that we have a phenomenal second half of the year. So let's talk about the recovery. You also said you can't you don't really have any idea or can't give any forecast on ridership. For the coming quarter. There will be behavior changes, But people will still need to get around and transportation will still be an essential part of of life and commerce on cities will still be strong. We don't subscribe to this plan that city's air dead. In fact, I think there's gonna be this Renaissance moment of you know everyone wanting to come back together.
