A highlight from 682:SECs Power Struggle: Congress, ETF Delays, and a Pivotal Hearing

"Good evening, and welcome to The Crypto Overnight -er. I'm Nick Ademus, and I will be your host as we take a look at the latest cryptocurrency news and analysis. So sit back, relax, and let's get started. And remember, none of this is financial advice. And it's 10 p .m. Pacific on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. Welcome back to The Crypto Overnight -er, where we have no sponsors, no hidden agendas, and no BS. But we do have the news, so let's talk about that. Tonight, we're diving into the SEC's ongoing tango with the crypto industry. From Gary Gensler's controversial stance ahead of a congressional hearing to the SEC's foot dragging on Bitcoin ETF approvals, the regulatory landscape is becoming a battleground. And don't think Congress is sitting idle. They're stepping into the ring, demanding answers and action from the SEC. Buckle up, it's going to be a rollercoaster of a night. US Securities Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler has been vocal, and his recent statements ahead of a congressional hearing are stirring the pot. Gensler testified in front of the House Financial Services Committee, and we're going to get to his testimony in a bit. He's holding fast to his stance that most cryptocurrencies and crypto firms fall under federal securities laws, laws that, mind you, have been on the books for decades, according to his testimony. Gensler's view is a direct challenge to the crypto industry's ethos of decentralization and financial freedom. He likens the current state of the crypto market to the 1920s, before federal securities laws were in place. A comparison that's not just a stretch, but a leap back in time, ignoring the innovative nature of blockchain technology. Again, during his testimony today, he reiterated his belief that Bitcoin is not a security. He stopped short of saying that Bitcoin is a commodity. When he was asked if he believes that Bitcoin is a security, Gensler responded that he, the SEC staff, and prior chairs have said that it does not meet the Howey Test. However, he was reluctant to say that Bitcoin was a commodity during a follow -up question. When talking about Bitcoin's categorization, he said, quote, the test is otherwise for other laws. Again, refusing to answer the question. Gensler is not without his critics. Patrick McHenry is the chair of the House Financial Services Committee. He was the one asking questions about Bitcoin and receiving non -answers in return. McHenry accused Gensler of lacking clarity, and McHenry's point is valid. How can you punish digital asset firms for not adhering to laws when it's unclear if those laws even apply? It's like being ticketed for speeding when there are no speed limit signs. On the other side of the aisle, some Democrats like Maxine Waters are siding with Gensler. They believe that existing securities laws can work for crypto firms, but let's be real. This isn't just about regulation. It's about control. The government wants a piece of the crypto pie and they're using outdated laws to stake their claim. The House Financial Services Committee has advanced two bills. One aims to transition a digital asset from being a security to a commodity. The other looks to regulate stable coins. Both are clear indicators that lawmakers are scrambling to catch up with an industry that's already miles ahead. While Gensler was testifying, crypto entrepreneurs were in Washington for Coinbase's Stand With Crypto Day. They met with lawmakers and discussed how crypto is creating jobs. It's a counter narrative that needs to be heard, especially when the SEC is painting the industry as the Wild West. The SEC, under Gensler's leadership, is pushing for crypto compliance based on antiquated laws. That not only stifles innovation, but also contradicts the very principles that make crypto a beacon of financial freedom. And as the government tries to rein in the crypto world, the industry is fighting back, making it clear that they will not be easily tamed. Gensler's testimony is a pivotal moment for the crypto industry. His unwavering stance that most cryptocurrencies should be regulated as securities is a red flag. It's a philosophical clash with the ethos of decentralization that many in the crypto community hold dear. Gensler's comparison of today's crypto landscape to the 1920s is a thinly veiled warning. He's essentially saying that the crypto industry is a Wild West that needs taming. Now let's not forget, the crypto industry isn't Wall Street. It's a new frontier with its own set of rules and innovations. But Henry's criticism of Gensler is noteworthy. It reflects the frustration that many feel about the SEC's unclear guidelines. How can crypto firms comply with laws that aren't explicitly defined for them? It's like being asked to read a book, but the pages are blank. The advanced bills are a mixed bag. While they offer some regulatory clarity, they also paved the way for more governmental oversight, which could stifle innovation. As we unpack the SEC's heavy handed approach, it's clear that the regulatory web around cryptocurrencies is tightening. Gensler's testimony is sure to fan the flames of the ongoing debate on governmental control versus financial freedom. But folks, this isn't the only arena where the SEC is flexing its muscles. The SEC's recent move to extend deadlines for Bitcoin ETF applications from ARK21 shares and GlobalX is emblematic of the same regulatory hesitance. It's a systemic issue. The SEC's rationale, market manipulation and weak investor protections. But as many of you know, the real crux of the matter is control. The same control that the government is keen on exerting over the broader crypto space. And let's not overlook the timing here. While Gensler prepares to defend his stance in Congress, the SEC is simultaneously delaying decisions on Bitcoin ETFs. And why? All under the shadow of a looming government shutdown, adding another layer of complexity to this regulatory maze. And it's not just individual critics or lawmakers putting the SEC under the microscope, it's the entire crypto industry who is watching and waiting. Which brings us to the SEC's recent move to extend deadlines for Bitcoin ETF applications from ARK21 shares and GlobalX. Another chapter in the ongoing saga of regulatory hesitance and it's happening as the US government teeters on the brink of a shutdown. ARK21 shares and GlobalX had their hopes dashed when the SEC pushed back its decision deadlines. ARK's new deadline is January 10th, while GlobalX has until November 21st. This isn't the SEC's first radio. They've got 240 days to make a call after starting a review. But this time they've acted well before their interim deadlines. Why the rush? That looming government shutdown might be the culprit. ARK Investment Management and 21 shares have been in the game since 2021. They faced SEC rejections before. GlobalX is a newer player. They aim to offer investors a safer way to get Bitcoin exposure, but the SEC isn't biting. True to form, they cite market manipulation and weak investor protections as the reasons for their reluctance. Now, a federal court recently called the SEC arbitrary and capricious in its ETF decisions. Despite this, the SEC is continuing to drag its feet. ARK's CEO, Cathie Wood, expected this delay. She believes the SEC will approve multiple Bitcoin ETFs at once, if at all. Meanwhile, the SEC is also reviewing applications from big names like BlackRock, Fidelity, VanEck, and Invesco. ARK21 shares was leading the pack, but now it's anyone's game. The SEC's hesitance is a sign of the regulatory uncertainty that's stifling innovation in the crypto space. And as the government faces a potential shutdown, this regulatory limbo could extend even further. So really, this shutdown could not have come at a worse time. But shutdown or no shutdown, the SEC has been dragging its feet on crypto for years. So let's be real. This is less about protecting the investor and more about maintaining control over a financial system that's rapidly evolving without them. The recent court ruling that called the SEC's past decisions arbitrary and capricious is a signal that their time of unchallenged authority is coming to an end. Cathie Wood expects more than one Bitcoin ETF to get approved eventually, and she's probably right. The SEC can't hold back this tide forever. And they need to be careful because first mover status brings a huge advantage in this kind of market. The delay might be frustrating, but it's also a sign that the SEC is feeling the heat. They're running out of excuses and with each delay, they're losing more credibility. So while we wait for the SEC to make up its mind, the crypto community gets stronger and the traditional financial system gets a little more nervous. The clock is ticking and it's not in the SEC's favor. While the SEC continues to drag its feet on Bitcoin ETF approvals, citing concerns that many in the industry see as smokescreens for control, it's not just the investors and financial firms that are losing patience. The political arena is starting to bubble with dissatisfaction and it's coming from both sides of the aisle. In fact, recent court rulings and bipartisan demands indicate that the SEC's longstanding resistance to crypto innovation is reaching a tipping point. Lawmakers have decided they've had enough of the SEC's hesitation and are now stepping into the ring guns blazing. And trust me, they're not missing words. A bipartisan group of lawmakers urged Gensler to approve the listing of spot Bitcoin ETFs immediately. This comes after that court ruling we were talking about involving Grayscale Investments. Grayscale secured a win when three judges in the US Court of Appeal ruled that the SEC had to re -review its bid for a spot Bitcoin ETF. This was after Grayscale sued the SEC for rejecting its proposal. This exposed the SEC's double standard. The court specifically addressed the SEC's differential treatment of spot Bitcoin ETFs in similar funds based on futures contracts. The lawmakers argued that a spot Bitcoin ETF is indistinguishable from a futures Bitcoin ETF. The lawmakers in question are representatives Mike Flood, Tom Emmer, Richie Torres, and Wiley Nickel. They argued that a regulated spot Bitcoin ETF would increase investor protection by making access to Bitcoin more transparent and safer. They sent a letter to Gensler, stating that Congress has a duty to ensure that the SEC approves investment products that meet requirements set out by Congress. During Gensler's testimony today, McHenry did not mince words. He called out Gensler's lack of responsiveness as unacceptable, which is funny because the SEC, the very agency tasked with enforcing transparency, is itself under fire for being opaque. The irony is palpable. McHenry's frustration isn't isolated. It's part of a broader sentiment that's been building up for months. The SEC has been aggressive in its enforcement actions against various crypto entities. Yet it's the same agency that oversaw one of the largest financial crimes in U .S. history, and within the crypto industry, no less. Congress wants answers, and they want them now. They specifically targeted Gensler's communications with FTX. McHenry said, quote, "'You refuse to be transparent with Congress regarding your interaction with FTX and San Bankman Free.'" Now, this is crucial. FTX was a major player in the crypto space, and any interactions between it and the SEC could have far -reaching implications. I remember back then that people were accusing SBF of setting things up with the SEC to be more favorable to FTX than the competition. McHenry revealed that the committee made multiple requests for documents from the SEC. Seven months pass, they've received zilch. Not one single non -public document. McHenry's patience is wearing thin, and he's made it clear that the SEC is not above the law. McHenry is calling for a path forward, one where the SEC is responsive to congressional requests. If not, they're looking at the first congressional subpoena issued to the SEC. This showdown is a reflection of the growing distrust between regulatory bodies and those who hold them accountable. And let's not forget, this is happening in the backdrop of a crypto industry that's already skeptical of centralized authority. McHenry's ultimatum to Gensler is a significant moment. It's a challenge to the SEC's authority and a call for greater transparency in an industry that values it above all else. The ball is in Gensler's court. Will he play or will he forfeit? Either way, the crypto community will be watching closely. The SEC has been all too eager to slap lawsuits on crypto companies. Yet when it comes to their own dealings with FTX, one of the industry's major players, they're as tight -lipped as a sealed vault. What are they hiding and why is it taking a congressional threat of a subpoena to get some answers? McHenry's frustration is palpable and frankly justified. The SEC is supposed to be accountable to Congress and by extension, the American people. Their lack of responsiveness is not just unacceptable, as McHenry puts it, it's a breach of public trust. And let's not forget the irony here. The SEC, which has been so keen on enforcing transparency in the crypto world, is itself becoming opaque. This isn't just hypocrisy, it's a red flag. If the SEC can't be transparent about its interactions with FTX, how can we trust them to regulate an industry that's all about decentralization and transparency? The bipartisan push for immediate approval of Spot Bitcoin ETFs is a significant development. It's not just a win for the crypto community, but it's also a slap in the face for the SEC. The agency's inconsistent stance on Bitcoin ETFs has long been a point of contention. The court ruling in favor of Grayscale adds legal weight to the argument that the SEC's current position is, in fact, untenable. What's even more intriguing is the bipartisan nature of this push. In an era where political divisions run deep, the united front from both sides of the aisle speaks volumes. It suggests that the benefits of a regulated Bitcoin ETF, increased transparency and investor protection, are universally acknowledged. As I have long said, if crypto becomes a left versus right issue, both sides will lose. So it's good to see the left and the right working together on something for once. The SEC's reluctance to greenlight Spot Bitcoin ETFs is a blockade on financial innovation. This is especially glaring when you consider that futures -based Bitcoin ETFs have already received a nod. This differential treatment is not only consistent, but also discriminatory. Gensler's oversight hearing was a pivotal moment. The lawmakers are not just asking for explanations, they're demanding action. And given the court's ruling and the mounting pressure from Congress, the SEC might finally have to yield. This is not just about one type of financial product. It's about the broader acceptance of cryptocurrency in the financial ecosystem. A Spot Bitcoin ETF could serve as a gateway for mainstream investors, making it easier for them to enter the crypto market. And let's not forget, easier access means more capital inflow, which could significantly impact Bitcoin's value, and by extension, the entire crypto market. So what happened? In the showdown between Gary Gensler and Patrick McHenry at the House Financial Services Committee, the SEC's stand on regulating most cryptocurrencies as securities collided head on with the crypto industry's ethos of decentralization. Gensler likened the crypto landscape to the 1920s, a comparison met with skepticism and criticism. The SEC extended deadlines for Bitcoin ETF applications from ARK21 shares and GlobalEx, citing market manipulation and investor protection. But let's call it what it is, another play for control. And this comes amid a looming government shutdown, adding another layer to an already complex regulatory landscape. A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pushing back against the SEC's hesitance on approving Spot Bitcoin ETFs. This comes hot on the heels of a court ruling in favor of grayscale investments, adding legal weight to the frustrations with the SEC's inconsistent policies. Lastly, McHenry's calls for transparency in the SEC's dealings with FTX and other crypto entities culminate in a broader sentiment of distrust. He made it clear that the SEC's lack of responsiveness is unacceptable and even threatened the congressional subpoena. The overarching theme tonight is the intensing struggle for control and clarity between the SEC and the crypto world. On the one hand, the SEC is holding fast to ancient regulations that don't align with the ethos of the crypto industry. On the other, Congress and the courts are increasingly pushing back, demanding answers and more rational policies. This power struggle is affecting everything from how digital assets are classified to the approval of new financial products like Bitcoin ETFs. This regulatory tussle dictates the rules of the game, affecting your investments, your financial freedom and the future of the crypto industry itself. The struggle is far from over and each move has consequences that resonate throughout the crypto community. As we wrap tonight, it's clear that we're at a crossroads. The decisions being made by these institutions will either open new doors for the crypto industry or erect walls that stifle innovation and financial freedom. What's certain is that Congress is paying close attention to Gensler and exerting pressure on him to act soon, for better or worse. And that's going to do it for us tonight. I want to thank you, my listeners, because when you stop listening, I will stop talking. If you enjoyed tonight's show, then please like, follow, subscribe, leave a rating or maybe a review. And in the meantime, we'll see you tomorrow night. See you next time.

"Police have arrested five people in connection with a series of home invasion robberies in South Seattle. Como 4's Hannah Knowles was at news a briefing with police chief Adrian Diaz and has more. Diaz says detectives will be testing the 14 handguns officers recovered to see if the weapons are linked to any of the recent shootings we've seen in the city or other cases that SPD is I hope that this helps relieve that we've made some several arrests in this that we hope that this actually helps a lot of the home invasion robberies that we hope that also not only does this make a huge Impact in that we've gotten 14 guns off the street in addition to those 14 guns that you said officers found a large sum of cash and drugs while serving the warrants this investigation is not over chief Diaz. He did make a it point to say that people will continue looking into these cases as more statements come out and more information as they continue this investigation. One person is dead following a shooting in Lake Forest Park and then a crash in Seattle. The gunfire took place at the intersection of Bothell Way in northeast 145th. Captain Tim Meyer with the King County Sheriff's Office says there are still a lot of questions to be answered. We're going to let evidence tell that story and it's going to take investigators from both scenes. They'll process them independently, come together and determine exactly what happened. Police have been speaking with a person of interest. There are no details yet on a victim. Pierce County Sheriff deputies are looking for surveillance video after they say a car prowler shot a man in Midland. It happened just before 5 a .m this morning. The victim called 911 saying he was shot after confronting a man who was breaking into cars at 104th Street East. The victim's injuries and the suspect is still on the run. After renewing the two -year contract for body -worn cameras with artificial intelligence on January 15th, the Seattle Police Department abruptly canceled the agreement three weeks later. The optics worsened when it was learned a police union official was inadvertently recorded laughing and joking about a young woman killed by police law enforcement John McGinnis. It creates an image problem, and I understand the inherent concerns about artificial intelligence determining what is appropriate, what is significant for recording. Even the ACLU had privacy concerns. The police officers union reportedly accused Seattle PD of spying, and some alleged the body cameras were pulled because of a murder from the union. 28 % of households in our state lack the income to meet their basic needs. According to the study, over 27 percent of the state's struggling households live in King County. The study also finds income inadequacy is growing from 22 percent of Washington households in 2019 to 28 percent today. Corwin Haik, Northwest News Radio. "Stars. The big blockbuster NBA trade today, Damian Lillard leaving Portland for the Milwaukee Bucks in a three -team deal to join forces with Giannis Antetokounmpo. That pairing has already produced some impact on the Bucks' betting odds. Milwaukee goes from the fourth best chances at the NBA title consensus to favorites to win it all. They've got odds around four to one across multiple U .S. sports books. The commanders back at work today preparing for the undefeated Eagles with Logan Thomas on the practice field for the first time since suffering a concussion in Denver, so basically the blowout loss of the Bills wasn't your fault Logan. Yeah, it stinks, especially going against a team I've played for for a while, I have a lot of friends on that team, and then obviously the outcome of it, you know, I wish I could have been there battling with my guys, but at the end of the day it's football, stuff happens and I'm just thankful that I got my health and ready to roll this week too. Actually the commanders are the sixth team Thomas has played for in NFL, the four of them are on Washington's schedule, so not just Buffalo, the Nationals trying to avoid a season sweep Baltimore in tonight with an offense that has been dormant against the Orioles the Nats bats have just 14 hits 27 in scoreless innings over three games this season, that streak actually 32 scoreless innings dating back to when Luke Voigt had an RBI knock in September of 2002, so not real good. A highlight from SBF TRIAL: 09/27 UPDATE

"Welcome to the SBF trial, a Coindesk podcast network newsletter bringing you daily insights from inside the courtroom where Sam Bankman -Fried will try to stay out of prison. Follow the Coindesk podcast network to get the audio each morning with content from the Coindesk regulation team and voiced by Wondercraft AI. Judge Lewis Kaplan will indeed let Sam Bankman -Fried's defense team ask certain Department of Justice witnesses about their recreational drug use, sort of. The judge, who has overseen the case for nearly a year now, inched closer to resolving outstanding issues ahead of trial. Last week, it was the Daubert motions regarding expert witnesses. Yesterday, it was resolving most of the motions addressing testimony and evidence questions. The defense team can cross -examine cooperating witnesses about issues like privileged company information and their recreational drug use, though the attorneys need to notify the court beforehand. The prosecution can present evidence tied to FTX's bankruptcy during the trial over the defense's objections. We'll also see information about the FTT token and whether its price was manipulated by other FTX insiders. Separately, as reported yesterday, Bankman -Fried is once again trying to get himself out of second and through the duration of his trial. The FTX founder was locked up in August after Judge Kaplan ruled he'd likely try to tamper with witnesses. Earlier this month, his request to overturn that decision was denied, and last week, an appeals court refused to alter the ruling. But in a Monday letter, lawyers for the disgraced crypto CEO asked a New York court to let him stay at a temporary residence in the city with a security guard. They also asked the judge to let Bankman -Fried travel to his attorneys' workspaces during the trial itself because it was exceedingly difficult to prepare for the trial from jail. The security guard, who the lawyers say will remain with Bankman -Fried at the residence, will also make sure he doesn't have any visitors or access to any computers, cell phones, the internet, television, or any other electronic devices, the letter said. It's unclear if p the five .m. Eastern time today for the DOJ to weigh in on the application. Defense attorneys have also requested that Bankman -Fried be allowed to wear a suit during the trial. During his last appearance before Judge Kaplan, he wore a prison uniform and was shackled. We're still waiting for the trial to start. The trial will start with jury selection on October 3rd at 930 a .m. Eastern time. The DOJ anticipates this taking the better part of a day. White -collar attorneys believe it'll take longer. Either way, opening statements will likely begin the day after a jury is seated. The DOJ also anticipates bringing some witnesses up to testify as soon as next week, with the court docket hinting that those witnesses may well be FTX insiders like Gary Wang, Caroline Ellison, and Nishad Singh.

"With Bloomberg, you get the story behind the story, the story behind the global birth rate, behind your EV battery's environmental impact, behind sand, yeah, sand, you get context, and context changes everything. Go to Bloomberg .com to get context. It does feel choppy. That's AI at work, right? In the stock market, no clear direction there, but then you take a look at the bond market, the message is clear, yields are higher right now. Yeah, absolutely so, and as you appear to be the good driver, about half the stocks in the S &P are lower, about half the stocks in the S &P are higher, you put it all together, and the net effect is really a market that is unchanged on the day. Of course, it takes time for these numbers to settle, but right now the S &P 500, right around 4 ,274, which is right around where it was yesterday at the close, basically unchanged here on the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average did move a slightly lower here on the day, down by about two tenths of a percent, the NASDAQ Composite higher on the day by two tenths of a percent, while the Russell 2000 is gonna finish the day. As the relative out performer, higher on the day by about 17 points. Alright, we're gonna get into industry groups in just a moment, but I do want to point Energy, really the out performer, this is oil jumps to a one year high, has to do with levels at Cushing dropping to the lowest since July of 2022. Again, the supply demand dynamics at play, but you know, Katie, I feel like we continue to talk about Energy being really an out performer. I'm gonna do that right now, you take a look at the industry groups, Energy up about two and a half percent, we all know the story, oil prices in particular through the roof, that's benefiting the equities as well. Capital Goods also saw a strong day, as too did some of the semis, and of course we're awaiting Micron results after the bell. You go down the list, there is more red than green, you can see down at the bottom, Autos not doing too hot today, and Utilities, interesting, one of your defensive plays off by about 1 .9 % today, Carol.

A highlight from MARKETS DAILY: Crypto Update | Bitcoin ETFs in Limbo, Regulatory Moves, and Global Crypto Growth

"This episode of Markets Daily is sponsored by Kraken. It's Wednesday, September 27th, 2023, and this is Markets Daily from Coindesk. My name is Noelle Acheson, Coindesk collaborator and author of the Crypto's Macro Now newsletter on Substack. On today's show, we're talking about Bitcoin ETFs, crypto market expansion, and more. So you don't miss an episode, be sure to follow the podcast on your platform of choice. And just a reminder, Coindesk is a news source and does not provide investment advice. Bitcoin jumped earlier today after a couple of days of continuing to trade range -bound. And it was up over 1 .6 % over the past 24 hours, trading at $26 ,606. This comes in spite of another delay from the SEC on two of the outstanding Bitcoin spot ETF proposals. More on this in a moment. It also comes in the absence of any clear positive catalysts. We could be seeing the manifestation of a strengthening investor interest. Given the eye -watering climb in the US dollar over the past few months and the spreading acceptance of the Fed's higher -for -longer mantra, it is surprising that Bitcoin hasn't been under more pressure. Its relative resilience suggests steady support. What we're seeing now could be the support picking up. Ether increased by even more than Bitcoin and is trading up roughly 2 .2 % over the past 24 hours, up at $1 ,619. In traditional markets, US stocks are steadying after yesterday's drop, with the S &P 500 and NASDAQ both up almost 0 .2 % and the Dow Jones flat. The markets are uneasy, though. One index to keep an eye on is the VIX, which measures implied stock market volatility derived from options pricing. Yesterday, this reached its highest level since May. In Europe, stocks also seem to be taking a breather. The FTSE 100 is down just over 0 .1%, while the German DAX and the Euro stock 600 are both flat on yesterday's close. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei index rose almost 0 .2 % on the back of reports that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has asked his cabinet to compile a new economic plan to ease the pain of inflation. China's Shanghai Composite also rose 0 .2 % after indications from the country's central bank that it would step up policy adjustments to support the economy. This also boosted the Hang Seng, which was up more than 0 .8%. In commodities, the Brent crude benchmark has resumed its climb. Data out yesterday showed that US crude stockpiles at the key Cushing, Oklahoma storage hub are at their lowest in 14 months. This is understandably keeping traders on edge. This morning, the price once again broke above $94 per barrel. This is an increase of 4 % from the weekly low reached on Tuesday. Brent is now 25%, above its price in June, when Saudi Arabia and Russia announced production cuts. The decline in the gold price continues, down 0 .7 % so far today, and down almost 2 % since the beginning of the week. The price per ounce is currently $1 ,887, the lowest since early March. Stay tuned, after the break, we'll take a look at some moves on the ETF front, and more crypto expansion outside the US.

Good morning, brother. I am working away here in the background, just enjoying a nice respite from the heat down here in North Georgia, man. It's pretty nice, but I'm getting pretty excited for PV next week. And I have a lot of people. I'm actually hosting a panel out there and looking forward to it. Yeah, that's right. That's the other thing. We're going to be doing a Bitcoin Veterans panel live at the Swan Dome. I think that's going to be on Friday. So that'll be cool. That's going to be myself, Shane Hazel. It will be Gabe Lord, Mickey Koss and Jordan Ganrel. The Swan Dome has some firepower this year. I'm not going to lie. Yeah, man. I don't know. I think this is the test run. They're not sure if they want to let Bitcoin Veterans on the main stage yet. They're testing, they're seeing, they're like, what are these crazy fuckers going to do? Like, let's see what's up. Yeah, let me just apologize in advance for screwing up our chances at that. Let me go ahead and apologize for Jordan in advance, too, because, I mean, I think if we don't burn it down, it's a huge success. We all are apologizing to Jordan and for Jordan in advance and considering getting an extra insurance rider for this particular event. OK, what time are you all going up to five? No, no. So Bitcoin Veterans is going to we're doing Cafe Bitcoin 9 a .m. Sharp Eastern and then there will be a short intro and then we're going right into Bitcoin Veterans starting at 10 a .m. on Friday in the Swan Dome. God, I was only asking because if you were going after myself in blue collar, it would for sure be already burned down. So it's checking. Any update on the flamethrower? Having a little trouble in the marshal's office. They don't seem to think that 30 to 40 foot flame lengths that I can handle that. So it's it's a back and forth. It's unlikely, but, you know, never say never. All right, we'll hold out hope. Let's get rolling into the show today. You are listening to Cafe Bitcoin. This is episode 443. Shout outs to our supporters on Fountain and Noster Nests. Our mission for this show is to provide the signal in a sea of noise. Teach the other seven billion people on this planet why there's hope because of this bright orange future that we call Bitcoin. Today, we are discussing Bitcoin news, covering some lizard alerts and talking about what's going on in the real estate markets as well. Later today, we have Craig Raw, the founder of Sparrow, looking forward to that. We're going to we're going to dig in. Last time we had Craig here, we did kind of a lot of background stuff like what is Sparrow all that. Today, we're going to get a little deeper into the weeds. We're going to go straight into the technical stuff. So if you want to know about Sparrow, have questions, whatever. We're going to go straight into that. Right. What's the most interesting breaking news? There's a congressman beating up Gary Gensler now to get those ETFs approved. And then at the same time, the SEC just delayed like three ETFs, I think, even though they're not even, you know, like a month from the deadline. And so they're starting to kick the can earlier, I guess. So it's sort of a strange situation. Maybe they're trying to line up all the timelines or something. Good morning, on the four elected officials in their open letter asking, demanding Gensler approve the Bitcoin ETF. They mentioned Fidelity, BlackRock and Grayscale, thanks to probably the lobbying by Barry Silbert and his compadres. Grayscale doesn't belong in that group. It just doesn't because BlackRock and Fidelity together manage about 13 trillion freaking dollars. Grayscale is a pimp. It's a fly on the windshield. It's very small. And Barry has a lot of problems with his ethics and genesis, GBTC kind of co -mingling funds or whatever they were doing. I understand that a lot of people who have GBTC, I have GBTC, want the conversion to happen sooner. But they're just not in the same class, ethically and just practically. That's like saying a corner grocery store belongs with Walmart. Well, all right then. So Franklin Templeton just filed a 19B -4 for its spot Bitcoin ETF application, which is officially starting the clock with the SEC. Franklin Templeton manages another one and a half trillion dollars. So the big boys are looking like the big boys are wading into the game. Yeah, the big four are besides Franklin Templeton, which is about one and a half trillion. The last one is Invesco, which is also about one and a half trillion. And those are all much bigger than the biggest of the also RANs or the smaller spot BTC applicants like ARK. And Valkyrie and so forth, they're much, much smaller, maybe tens of billions or less. Hey, Terrence, for a liquor store, doesn't Grayscale have a lot of Bitcoin in custody? They do. It's going to be pretty minor compared to the rush of cash that should flood in. Assuming like, you know, the DOJ stuff with Binance and stuff is looks like it's there's more certainty around that. They're trying to they're talking about maybe having a plea deal with CZ and Binance. So if that gets resolved, then yeah, you have a pretty big green light. I will say like one thing with the gold ETFs when those took off and gold prices shot up. That will also correlated with massive problems in the fiscal and monetary policy. And we definitely have that on the fiscal side. I would say on the monetary side rates are, you know, higher than you'd like for liquidity, money supplies going down. But on the fiscal side, with a ridiculous spending debt and deficits, that sets up a big that's a great setup for a big flood of cash to come in. As long as one of the big four launches a big Bitcoin ETF. Hey, Alex, not to not to revisit an old horse, I know that's a butchering of the phrase, but, you know, I know yesterday we were talking about institutional. And for those listening again, like, you know, the ETF comes up a lot again because it is a vehicle for institutional funds to hold commodities. I know you guys were talking about it yesterday, but like other commodities, as far as I know, funds like pension funds, any commodities they hold, none of it is physical. All of it is futures or ETF indexes. And a lot of that has to do with being able to liquidate, move things around, balance the fund, etc. All right, well, you would you mind explaining that a little more in depth for people who don't get that? Because so many I've run into many people who don't understand that they're like, why don't pension funds just buy the underlying asset? Why don't they buy the Bitcoin directly? Why don't they buy gold directly? Why don't they buy corn directly? Why don't they buy oil directly? What's the problem with that? Yeah, so one of the things with pension funds is there's a lot going on.

"Lots of channels. Nothing to watch. Especially if you're searching for the truth. It's time to interrupt your regularly scheduled programs with something actually worth watching. Salem News Channel. Straightforward, unfiltered, with in -depth insight and analysis from the greatest collection of conservative minds. Like Hugh Hewitt, Mike Gallagher, Sebastian Gorka, and more. Find truth. Watch 24 -7 on SNC .TV and on Local Now, Channel 525. A big hit for the Crystals, girl group, 1963. Just 14 years later, this guy, 19 -year -old Sean Cassidy, busting onto the scene. Was this in the Mike Gallagher record collection when you were 17? Nope. Missed it. Missed it. Don't miss this. Sean Cassidy, who I had on the show, I think, last year. He blows through town in some medium -sized venues and just kind of has a sense of humor about all of his hits and all of his stuff and blah, blah, blah. The great Sean Cassidy is 65 today. I also saw him in a theatrical production of a great musical called Blood Brothers. He has toured in that. I think he might have played it in New York a little bit. Maybe even in the West End in London. He's great. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him. He just has a lot of energy. And you know what he has? He has gratitude because he knows he's pigeon -holed. He was in the Hardy Boys TV show or some such. He was the kid star and blah, blah, blah. But you know what? If you got that going for you, milk it for your entire life. I'm a big believer in staying in your lane. I am a stay -in -my -lane kind of guy. Let's talk a little bit about my years -long narrative about the crap file on Donald Trump. Oh, yes. Let me tell everybody what it is. The Mike Gallagher theory has been born out true time and time and time and time. Whenever something starts to happen that will create positive attention for Trump or make people empathize with him or vote for him or support him, some kind of story will mysteriously appear so that the media can cover something else. Go. Well, yesterday is a perfect example. Huge news. The House Oversight Committee subpoenas records and discovers that Hunter Biden got wires from China, got transfers from Beijing for more than a quarter of a million dollars. And the wires were sent to Joe Biden's home. The president himself, his home, his home address, not Hunter's address, Joe's address. Now, this is the man, of course, who has insisted all along that he doesn't know anything about his son's business dealings. He just happens to be getting a quarter million dollars sent to his residence, but he didn't know anything about it. Now, hours after that comes this big revelation. A judge in New York, a Trump -hating, maniacal leftist New York City judge ruled that Trump has overstated the value of his properties over the years.

A highlight from "Shanghai makes moves to boost blockchain adoption." Sep 27, 2023

"It's 8 a .m. Eastern, September the 27th, and this is your Daily Crypto Report. Bitcoin is up slightly at $26 ,789, ETH is up slightly at $1 ,626, and Binance Coin is down slightly at $215. The second intermediate people's court in Shanghai recently has called Bitcoin a unique and non -replicable asset. This move represents a shift from China's typically strict anti -crypto policy, providing Bitcoin with a newfound layer of legitimacy. Despite a nationwide crypto ban in China, the court's ruling indirectly acknowledges the financial nature of digital currencies. It delves into the complexities of Bitcoin's legal status, emphasizing its monetary and property attributes. The ruling came just before the Shanghai municipal government unveiled an action plan to boost blockchain development in the city by 2025. The plan aims to achieve breakthroughs in blockchain system security, cryptographic algorithms, smart contracts, and more. These advancements will support the municipal blockchain basic service platform and various sectors like government affairs, cross -border trade, finance, metaverse, and data circulation. The plan emphasizes talent development in the blockchain industry, encouraging institutes and companies to hire blockchain professionals and nurture young talents. This initiative aligns with China's ongoing focus on blockchain technology despite banning crypto transactions in 2021. While Binance is selling its entire Russian business to ComX as part of its exit from the market due to compliance concerns, Binance's chief compliance officer stated that operating in Russia no longer aligns with the exchange's compliance strategy. ComX, a recently launched crypto exchange, will take over Binance's Russia operations. Binance's exit from Russia includes the discontinuation of all exchange services and business lines in the country. Unlike some international companies in Russia, Binance will not retain any ongoing revenue split or an option to repurchase shares in the business. More on Binance, the firm has reopened its crypto exchange platform for registration and access in Belgium three months after the country's financial regulator ordered it to cease operations. Now to continue using Binance, Belgian users must accept Binance Poland's terms of use and resubmit KYC verification per Polish regulatory requirements. The move follows Binance's regulatory challenges in various European countries, including France, where it's reportedly under investigation for money laundering. And finally, Sam Bankman -Fried won't be able to tell the jury about his pretrial detention in jail, among other factors. During his upcoming trial, a district court judge ruled on what can be discussed during the trial. SBF can't bring up his family background, health, age, or the fact that he's been in jail awaiting trial. The trial itself will focus narrowly on the specific allegations against him, avoiding hot -button topics related to FTX's bankruptcy and his prior good acts. However, evidence of his alleged illegal campaign finance scheme will be allowed as it's directly related to the charged offenses. He has, though, been granted the ability to ask Department of Justice witnesses about the recreational drug use, provided his lawyers notify the court in advance. Additionally, the prosecution can introduce evidence related to FTX's bankruptcy during the trial. The trial will also delve into the FTT token and whether it was manipulated by other FTX insiders. SBF's lawyers are still attempting to secure his release from jail, where he has been held since August. The trial is set to begin in early October. Well, that's all for us today. "That's affecting your bus and everybody else as well, and that's contributed to delays. I think the industry or the customers, that's the airlines, understand that, understand that there's problems. But beyond that, I think Boeing really have to try and reestablish that reputation for building fantastic aircraft, but also for building aircraft that just never go wrong. And that's really the challenge that they've got to do is building back that reputation. You know, I think what they've done right is, as I said, they've been very transparent and very honest all the way throughout this whole recovery process. And I think that's probably done them some good. In the meantime, Airbus must be a laughing arguably that it knows that all the negative focus is on Boeing. Yeah, you know, I don't know if Airbus are laughing. They've got they've got their own problems. I mean, they're sort of nice problems to have in a way in that they are struggling to meet demand for their products because they face the same supply chain problems. They are trying to ramp up production. They've got disappointed customers because they're promising aircraft and they're not being delivered on time and that's because that matters for an airline if you're relying on a new aircraft to come in for the summer season or whatever. So Airbus have got their own problems, but yes, this is, you know, there are waves and trends in the market over the decades and this is, you know, at the moment here a bus is on top, they might not be forever. It's a long-term business. Airbus and Boeing have got the huge challenge of coming up with more sustainable aircraft. What do they do next? What do you replace the a three 20 and the 737? They'll board be working away on that. We haven't really got much sort of hint of what's going to happen. It's probably nothing will emerge now until next decade, but these big technological decisions do you produce something that could be fueled by hydrogen? Do you change the basic design of the aircraft? All these big, big, multi-billion dollar decisions still have to be taken. And certainly Airbus are on top at the moment and probably will be for the rest of the 2020s, but as I say, it's a long-term business who knows what will happen after that. My dad Morrison, thank you as ever for joining us on the line that was murder Morrison flight global's head of strategic content. You're listening to the globalist on Monaco radio. Time to talk business now with Chris Johnston weekend business editor at inside the UK. Good morning, Chris. Good morning, how are you? Very well, thank you. I'm glad to have you with us on the program. But let's start with Mark Zuckerberg and his year of efficiency. Yeah, it was a pretty good day for Mark Zuckerberg yesterday. Meta the owner of Facebook Instagram and WhatsApp had its quarterly results for the first three months of the year. And investors liked the numbers. They sent the shares up about 12% in after hours trading in New York because the revenue for the first three months came in at 3% higher than last year it took 28.6 billion and that beat analysts expectations they were expecting that figure to decline slightly. So it's sort of basically means that advertisers are still continuing to spend despite the economic downturn that we're experiencing in much of the western world, at least at the moment. And this sort of plan to increase efficiencies in the company that mainly entail getting rid of about 20,000 staff appears to be paying off said on the call after the numbers came out that the business wasn't performing as well as he wanted last year, but we're now increasingly doing this work from a position of strength. And it wouldn't have been a tech company results without talking a bit about AI. He said, Mark Zuckerberg says that mysterious working on new AI powered features such as visual creation tools for Instagram, whatever that means. And AI agents for business messaging. I think that basically means that it will help brands develop tools that will personalize the ads that we see faster and more cheaply. So yeah, more personalized advertising coming to you on meta platform soon. Can't wait. Does this mean that we're pushing more wholeheartedly in the direction

"And finally, the democratic people's republic of Korea doesn't have an abundance of soft power riches to mine, but in one area it can claim supremacy. It's particularly good at constructing socialist realist monuments, one company based in Pyongyang has helped to erect statues in 17 countries, including Cambodia, Germany, and Zimbabwe. While Jack Simpson explored this topic in the new edition of Monaco magazine, he caught up with Monica's foreign editor Alexa self to tell him more. So I've got a copy of issue one 6 two of Monaco magazine here, April 2023, and I have to say it is a vintage issue if I don't say so myself. We're just going to be talking about one spread in agenda and particularly soft power icon, which is the perennial feature that we have in monocle for anyone who doesn't know what a soft power icon is, obviously, here at Monaco, we're very interested in soft power. That's the way countries sell themselves abroad and kind of non hard means by which they promote their own interests. Whether that be economic cultural or art, which some might say, is cultural, but this is where our meets politics actually. So in the past, we've looked at ABBA and how ABBA promotes Sweden, not directly, but through its associations with pop music and entertainment. We've looked at bluey the dog, the cartoon dog, and how that's helped Australia's soft power. We've looked at Mister Bean or senor bean as he's known in Spain. And this month's country that has a soft power icon is one that we wouldn't necessarily associate normally with soft power being very good at soft power. And that is the democratic people's republic of Korea, otherwise known as North Korea, which very much focuses on hard power usually. But there is an organization or a company which actually does a lot for North Korea's soft power. What are they called Jack Simpson? So this is a mansudae overseas projects, they're part of the mansudae art studio in North Korea, which is renowned for their sort of public architecture and design skills. And particularly they have a pension, if you will for socialist realist monuments and statues. So you've seen these typical of the Soviet Union, perhaps these giant statues of workers or soldiers depicting some kind of patriotic scene and this style, which is called socialist realist, is very much associated with North Korea, or at least North Korea is a pioneer of this style. And what does man Sue day overseas projects do? Well, as a sort of international wing of the mansudae art studio, they're exporting this socialist realist style abroad and particularly in Africa, where not all nations have seen North Korea as some nuclear pariah state. They played an important role in the national liberation movements and anti colonial struggles in Africa during the Cold War. And these countries were drawn to socialist realism due to its modern style and anti colonial connotations. So as of 2015, for example, the hermit nation has created over 15 monuments in Africa, including the African renaissance monument in Dakar and a huge gargantuan mausoleum for the Angolan president Neto. And the African renaissance monument in Dakar. What does that look like? Well, that's sort of this idea of the African family. This huge father with a woman and a baby in its arms sort of pointing towards the sky. And he's sort of, he's got his shirt off and he's very muscular, isn't he? He's huge. The massive statue which is in Stalingrad that commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad and the Soviet victory in the Second World War. Yes, so this piece is very interesting, which Jack has written about mansudae overseas projects as a soft power icon and it has some astonishing imagery of these huge, huge statues that the group has built on the African continent and not just in Africa they operate. They've actually built public works in Germany even, but mostly it's in Africa. And tell me, these statues are meant to glorify the nation. They're often built by dictators post independence. What do local populations tend to think about them? Well, these monuments are certainly iconic, though many sort of showing signs of wear and tear already. They've been made very cheaply and with cheap labor, and I think that's also part of their charm to these countries as well. Namibia's independence museum, for example, features a mural in which namibian warriors through history sort of lining the walls. However, a lot of these namibian warriors seem to look a little bit more North Korean than they do namibian. For example, and a lot of locals rightly are a bit agitated by that. The extent to which this soft power icon has been successful in this respect is a little bit dubious. So Jack, what's mansudae overseas projects up to at the moment? In recent years, the U.S. and UN have cracked down on this foreign labor from mansudae overseas projects as they tighten sanctions on North Korea. However, poignant has shifted its foreign artistic operations to a smaller lesser known studio peco, who continued to be active in sub Saharan Africa. And that's medical writer Jack Simpson there in conversation with our foreign editor, Alexis self, and for more original stories to pick up a copy of the brand new issue of Monaco magazine on newsstands now. "Program joining me in the studio. I'm delighted to say Simon Brooke, journalist and communications consultant and baby sham drinker. I'm going to find out in a minute. That all will be revealed, ladies and gentlemen. Hello, Simon, how are you? Good morning, very well. How are you? Very well, thank you. Yes, it's fine. Let's start off what he spotted in the papers. Yeah, the Sydney morning Herald is one of a number of newspapers and news websites this morning, reporting that this lab leak is the most likely cause of the pandemic at least according to the U.S. energy department and the Herald says that it has to be said that U.S. spy agencies remain divided over the origins of the virus. But the paper points out that this does move from the department's earlier position that it was undecided about the how the virus has emerged and according to the Herald the department's insights come from the network of national laboratories that it oversees rather than from traditional forms of intelligence like spy networks or communications intercepts. So just briefly, have they suggesting that this is what dare I use the phrase more cock up than conspiracy. Well, it does seem to exactly, yes. So certainly, I mean, that obviously would be absolute dynamite, wouldn't it some suggestion that somebody had deliberately introduced this virus into the public into the public domain. But no, this is a suggestion that it is come from the lab. But I think the fact that it's come from the lab rather than wet markets or any of the other suggested origins. I think is really important. And I think also particularly important at the moment, obviously, the Sydney morning Herald is going big on this story because anything that China does is particularly significant for Australia, but I think the other thing is the timing generally of this story emerging is particularly significant as well because of the increased tensions between China and the west. We've seen over the last few years and also most recently, of course, over suggestions that the Chinese government might provide military support to Russia. So even if it does look like, as you say, more cock up the conspiracy, it is still potentially quite difficult. Is it strange that we are nearly three years into the beginning of the pandemic really taking its grip on the world? Had this had emerged earlier. The reaction arguably would be far more different because it's astonishing what time does to place to place a bit of distance between a story. This would have been huge news, a little while ago. Yeah, I think it's interesting. You're right. It's certainly there was this story did emerge and was widely debated just during the time of the pandemic and just afterwards, but I think really why the story sort of has reemerged is partly because China has refused to get involved in any kind of investigation. And so even people who wouldn't regard themselves as conspiracy theorists have felt slightly suspicious about that because there's so much information there that China will not allow to be released and you'll remember, of course, even when the virus first exploded first emerged, the Chinese government tried to close it down and took action against the man who first warned people that this virus could be particularly serious. Let's move on to a story in the Financial Times. It talks about Ukraine fighting for a way of life as much as for its territory. It's a good point, isn't it that everything has now become to who owns what who controls what, but in actual fact there is an entire society which has been in many cases blown to bits since Russia's invasion. Exactly, yes, so the FT foreign affairs columnist Martin sandow looks back at Joe Biden's speech last week in Poland. Describes his language, Biden's language as manichean and also points out that there's a sort of comparison here with Ronald Reagan's very strong rhetoric back in the 1980s. The empire of evil and things. And according to sandow, president Joe Biden's speech and also was thickly coated in the kind of idealistic rhetoric that many western Europeans discreetly roll their eyes at. But according to sander, this dramatic, as I say, manichean language matters, as he says, as Reagan's rhetoric did, because it speaks to the experience of those directly confronting autocracy, whether Poland during the Cold War, or Ukraine, today. And I think this is really important as you say, we do tend to view this as a war about territory, you know, who's got Crimea who's got the east of Ukraine who might get a few hundred meters back in this appalling trench warfare that we're now seeing develop. But it's a battle of our ideas, and I would say and I paint a very clear picture of this. In a way, a battle between good and evil. This is what effectively what mannequin an approach is. It's two sides which are electrically opposed to each other. Now this isn't the first time in the last few days actually that this criticism has been levered at Biden, which is he is seeing things a longer a narrative which no longer actually applies to today. In so far as we are so global, that it is impossible to take totally clean opposed sides. Yeah, I think the point is we are I think we are global and I think one of the things Biden has always made very clear about his presidency is and it was the same when he was vice president. He does take a global view. You know, he has met world leaders. He's traveled around the world. And so this is particularly important to him and I was listening to an interview with commentators just over the weekend saying that when his political biography is written, that he will hope that there are significant chapters on his influence on global affairs. And I think it's interesting because Ronald Reagan a Republican president very much at the time considered on the right wing, Biden, a democratic president, but when it comes to this global view of the world and good versus evil in many ways, it's interesting that actually we thought, with the end of history, this had gone, but it's back again. Let's have a major handbrake turn in terms of tone on the newspaper review. It's always a delight to do something like this. From going from major geopolitical conflict to fizzy drinks and indeed fizzy drinks from the 1970s. Which I forgotten about baby sham. Arguably, I was actually at that stage, possibly a little too young to be drinking it. But it just explained to us why the telegraph of all newspapers has decided that it wants to tell us all to go and have a baby sham. Quite a stylish drink one would say. Well, it was at one point, this is a sweet sparkling Perry, which is made out of pears, I think, isn't it? Yes, of course it is yes. It's basically. Exactly, according to The Daily Telegraph, baby Sam is making a comeback as its owners claim many drinkers would choose it over champagne. And I'd say this really jumped out at me at this story because one of the first girls I have a snogged when I was into girls was a huge baby sham fan and what she was well known for was the fact that she was such a fan that she could open a bottle prize the cap off a bottle of baby champ with her teeth. But that problem I'm sure they share. What went wrong? What could possibly go wrong with a woman who can take a bottle of baby chef's top off with a dip? If only we continued our relationship. Anyways, you say baby sham is back very much coming back onto the shelves and into bars and stuff. And I didn't realize this, but apparently not only was it invented 70 years ago, but it was the first alcoholic drink to be advertised on television here in the UK. So what's going to happen to you now that we get baby sham back on the show? I'm off for a baby Chanel why not I'm going to start from now and I'm going to start every day with a baby shower. We shall all learn to remove the bottle top with our teeth. Simon Brooke, thank you so much for joining us on the global list. UBS has over 900 investment analysts from over 100 different countries. "February one thousand nine hundred seventy rio de janeiro. The streets pulse with light and sound parade. Floats glowed they appeared to glide through the massive ecstatic revellers dancers in matching outfits. Some with our eight hats and headdresses leaned in wobbled on top of their heads. Move their bodies to the samba music. Long white dresses swirled twirled. In the dark the embroideries along the edges catching the light and sparkling with life. The mccullers erupted from every direction every angle oranges reds yellows purples. There were floats. Made it look like horses and others that looked like dragons from every blocked the rapturous sound of symbols drums. An undeniable rhythm infiltrated every year and every mind and every ass in the city. There was no escaping the party carnival in rio was non stop and this is why janice drop them here. Why she made the trip all the way to rio. She had recently seen black orpheus. Marcel camus nineteen fifty nine film. That told the story of in. In the setting of the centuries-old celebration that draws hundreds of thousands to the streets of rio every february she fell under the spell of the city that she witnessed in the movie and of the celebration that had documented it was full of colour full of sound and full of some of the most blatant liberation on planet earth. The liberation was there in plain sight. The colors the outfits the dances the music the have nots dressed up like the haves women and barely there bikinis men dressed in drag sweaty bodies gyrating in the eighty degree heat. A mythical figure. King momo giving his blessing to all the city to cut loose and indulge the masses took over the streets of rio for a few days once a year and let it all out no-holds-barred janice wanted the province at that film. They bear she wanted to get free. Denison just turned twenty seven years old. She had disbanded the cosmic blues band. She needed some time to collect her thoughts before holding auditions for a new group. She needed this extreme change of scenery. But she needed something else to she needed. A fix. she was out of her dole. A phoenix man. She felt shakes coming on again as seemingly endless parade snaked. Its way past where she stood on the sidelines. Who was a chill that she was able to escape a chill hunt down and follower no matter. If she's in san francisco new york city or rio the chill would find her to chill would find her and remind her of all the things. She missed the things. She wanted the thing she needed. The rhythm of the symbols of the drums penetrated your head and then shot lightning bolts daughter spine. Her hands were vibrating. And you can feel an oncoming migraine like the high beams of a tractor trailer rolling down the highway at seventy miles an hour. She began to sweat and not just from the humid rio evening. She reached out and grabbed david. Nine houses arm to steady yourself in the feel of skin on hers gave her some comfort. A passing float with a giant horse. Glowed was color. And then it began to move in the torso of the oversized horace pulsing along with the rhythm of the samba. It was perfectly timed with the music imperfectly. Time with pounding. She was feeling in her head. And the synchronicity was freaky everytime the horse's belly would pulse inward she concedes ribcage poke out. She leaned her head into david shoulder and said. Are you seeing this. David just cradled her and his arm and tried to calm shaking hands. It was obvious she thought that the two of them were watching. Different parades. david was one of the first people janice met when she arrived in rio with her friend. Linda nineties fellow. American david time in the peace corps in law school and now is traveling the amazon with his friend. Ben bill. He saw her lounging on the beach and made the first move. He didn't even recognize her as the janice joplin until the second day that they hung out it was down to earth and janice felt stabilized around even in her unstable state. It was his magic power and nowhere did. His magic power proved to be more clutch than in this moment during the carnival. Parade rea- a samba school of kids. Dancing clapped around the huge horse float as it continued to move up the street the greens and whites of their outfits matched colors of the flowed horse. Their rhythm became louder. More urgent and then janice watched as the horses eyes begin to glow a deep red a red so deep and so hot that she could see smoke coming from its burning sockets and now the samba kits is were going red to and every time they spun around and their shirts addresses poon doubt they were director gazes write back to janice their red is with seer deep into her flesh in the shaking of her hands intensified the pounding in her head down her spine becoming unbearable the chil had founder again she panicked she had to escape the crowd that was the first thing she had to do david at a holler out of choose out of dole affi. She had no heroin. All she had was the chill the increasing. Fear that something awful about to happen she needed. David tell david letter away from the demonic vote in the red eyed saw school away from the crowds and the incessant rhythm and noise and they got real free they roll dumb up the coast. They slept on beaches. There were no crowds was just them the sand. The water in the horizon. David held janice tight every time to chill grabbed. Hold of her wouldn't go. He held her tighter than chill until the children away. And they rented a motorcycle and torres up the road towards by on route by kid medium strip and they were both thrown onto the road and they walked away unscathed. Happy to be alive and wound up. Hitching the rest of the way to salvador in the happy to be alive feeling stuck with her eventually janice felt calm. She rode the wave calmness for a few days straight and was hopeful that the combination of the brazilian countryside. David's company and good old fashioned cold turkey would make her addiction thing of the past. She had sweated out a carnival throwing it out from the back seat of the motorcycle. She flew back to california on her own. David avowed to return with. Everybody realized that he had overstayed his visa and had to stay behind for a while to sort things out. She got back to her house and large expert in marin county her first real house that she had bought in the fall. Nineteen sixty nine with all that. Albert grossman money. still noodle. has she unlocked. The door walked inside your suitcase on the floor. The entry way she walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. Everything was quiet. Larks per was quite and the house was quite even the redwood trees still and didn't make a peep to too quiet she thought about ringing someone up maybe pig panir samra linda. Maybe she'd ring up one of the angels. He could rip through a bottle of something hard and sweet and then tear ass on the one on one the salty pacific air blowing through her.

"The devil made me do indeed hers and on. Hbo max four hundred seventeen without parent. June nineteen sixty four new york city. The pool table seen better days. The green felt was scoffed. Stained it was like looking at spots on a green dalmatian. The old beer spots spilled from a pint in someone's careless hand while getting close to the action. There were the blood spots from johnny pocket. Palladino had the nosebleed mid shot. That one time is nose bleed because some guy hustled cracked him over the back of the head with his poor q. But still a nose bleeds and nose bleed and then there were the burn marks from the cigarettes that had been stubbed out hustlers who were poised to take the shot but it also happen to reach the end of their smoke. It was easier to stay position in squish. It out on the table than to stand up and ruined the sweet set up janice joplin had never really seen a pristine pool table. Entertain one years. It made no difference to her. The thing was spotless or not. All she cared about is whether the table was flat or not and at this moment in this particular new york city bar on the lower side janus needed to bank the shot. She had ten bucks riding. I and that ten bucks meant another score. She needed to get high needed to land some more speed. She'd swallowed snorted. Shoot matter how a came she had had it. She leaned over the table closed. One i pulled back on the queue a fatman nursing paps whistled at her mid pose. Janus thought for a minute above breaking or concentration standing up straight walking over to the fatman with long queue in both hands and smashing it. Straight against us asshole smug face it would make her feel a million percent better in the moment. She miss out on what she really wanted. She had to stay focused so she ignored him. Ignored the other stairs that she knew coming our way for men and women alike. Some stairs like daggers. And others like lost. She left fly on the q the ball when exactly where she wanted to go. She turned around to face her opponent. Man out loud for the whole place to hear laughing. That big generous laugh verse. The hand was outstretched in front of her opponent. Ready to receive cold hard cash that she would immediately turn into a warm hearted. Hi this broads fucking robbing the joint. Someone said from a few tables away. Beer bottles clink together and a table of middle age guys. Chuckle the regulars at the bar janice was all right. She was taught she was funny. She took no shit. She regaled them all with tales of how she'd grown up and join this places like the infamous keyhole club in port arthur. a dive frequented by gamblers hookers. She told him about the time she busted this kid. John clay upside the head with a metal pale when he was pissed that she had dumped him in about the time of the big oak. In when some redneck grounded breast she grabbed the nearest beer bottle and smashed it upside his head. A knock down drag out brawl. Fallen teeth knocked out. Jars busted helpless fuckers chase down by fast moving automobiles the regulars at the bar reciprocated until genesis story about this one time that a guy walked into the bar right up the street cause middle of the summer. Get a gun in his hand a mask on his face. The place was packed wall to wall people he pushed the crowd walked right up to the bartender and said that he wanted all the cash in the till was robbing. The place in the bartender was in the middle of making three gin and tonics and a tom collins. He was fucking busy and he told the stick of guy that he was going to have to wait his turn. No shit janice asked no shit. The regular dolder her. The stick of guy eventually got tired of waiting for the bartender to pay him attention so he turned around and split janice wondered if the story was even true. The place was packed when she was there. How sling a little pool for a meager payday. And besides this rundown spot on the lower east side didn't exactly scream hotspot. But it wasn't like she was a regular at this place. She had only been in new york city for a few weeks and she wasn't planning on staying forever. It was the spring of nineteen sixty four in janice. It only just pulled into town behind the wheel of a yellow morris. Minor convertible with linda pool. One j whitaker's axis of all people in the passenger. Why she came. She wouldn't really say lyndon even really know why they did. It was wunderlist was a fear of commitment with jay was the to get lost to get lost and never come back in the block of new york city. They found themselves on seemed to be the kind of place you can get lost in forever. We're careful a heads were everywhere. Glory side the crept along the shadows of the tenement walls. They hid behind overfly dumpsters. They scurried down alleyways and peered out from stain curtains at the windows of walk ups and they reminded janice of the shadow people in venice. The ones who came out at night the ones who would do anything. I score the ones who made the taurus flesh crawl. New york city was still a few years away from being rebranded fierce city. The town that required its own user manual to help visitors avoid shocking and violent experience some some neighborhoods. Were getting close. Drug dealers stake their claim on street. Corners muggings were on the rise. Entire buildings were vacant and slowly. Decaying cars were two left on the side of the road and taken over by a heads looking for shelter place to falker place to score jazz. Play the set at gerdes folk city in the west village when she first arrived but for the most part months in the big apple. Were real gone boondoggle. She subsisted on a regular diet parts. She shot speed with locals and she search out the gay bars and test. The waters popping. Speed the shooting speed by the time she drove the little morris minor back to san francisco. It was all about methamphetamine. Math was everywhere. it was impossible to avoid. It was the favourite street drug on haight. Ashbury and beyond the people's chemist augusta south stanley. The third set his first home laboratory to produce meth not. Lsd which he became known for them by the time she got back to san francisco janice was shooting meth on the regular. It gave her a false sense of power endurance. She didn't sleep. Her face broke out her weight. Drop dangerously low. Soon she was slinging speed in order to maintain her habit. That's all there was a crippling habit. Then there were no more monterey folk festival. James j whitaker no crazy road trips across the country. Nowhere to run to. She haunted the places where the drug ran rampant places like.

"Janice joplin stopped dead in your tracks. In the middle of the monterey folk festival fairgrounds. Her head was swimming. That would be the red wine. Repulse pulse was racing netflix. The hearts. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Suddenly our head went from doing a backstroke. To frantic dog panel. She could feel pulse in every extremity. Was bob dylan. In the flesh. He was walking towards her. Just be lining across the grass. The idyllic she was an unknown talent. Show winner. And he was. He was the bob dylan. Neri was approaching quickly. With new yorkers determined stride probably new yorkers determined skepticism to it was a sunday in may nineteen sixty three the inaugural year. The monterey folk festival was winding down the weekend featured performances by doc watson. The weavers peter. Paul and mary. Joan baez bob. Only one who is name already. A legend is second record. The freewheel and bob dylan was just days away from release. Janice was one of the winners of the open mic contests on saturday morning at the festival which gave her tickets to watch the rest of the festival including dylan's performance. On saturday evening. It was the first time she'd ever seen him perform live. The red wine purple hearts combo had proven to be a hindrance to her performances as she forgot lyrics. Miss notes sometimes missed entire gigs. But this weekend this weekend she nailed it. She played some of her signature blues songs. Trouble in mind. Nobody knows you when you're down and out as she sang them with your well-worn gravelly voice wise beyond tears. She sang them as if she had lived every single word. She impressed the judges enough to taste victory. That we can't now she was tasting the purple pill. She had put on her tongue that day and the cheap red wine she washed down with decks mill was all the rage in phetamine barbituate combo. That was a favor of mods overseas and urban bohemian stateside. Kids eight them. There were penny candy. Fucking winston churchill pop per parts for chrissakes and they'd be banned within a year janice ran her tongue around in her mouth trying to cast out. Lingering taste she worried that her tongue was swan. A side effect from the pill or the wine or maybe the combination of the two of them. At least she thought it was swollen. She couldn't risk swollen tongue. When about talked one varietals. Because she was talking to bob dylan. That was for damp. Cher watching dylan play a short set the four. She imagined that it was hearst. Any next on stage. Joan baez janice wanted to be joan baez clearly to sound nothing alike came from completely different schools of thought one was diamonds and rust and the other was balls and chains. Joan and dylan's with god on our side that night and janice closed her eyes type clinched the hand of her friend j whitaker in her own hand and imagine what it would sound like a she janice was harmonizing. Her voice was rough hard as nails. She was bessie smith. To dylan's woody. Guthrie johm was to flowery too timid to safe. She belonged in a coffeehouse somewhere. Dome was cappuccino music. Not big time. Monterey festival music in her mind janice push joan right out of the way took place next to him. It was her her. Now as dylan got within earshot of janice center friend j on the festival grounds janice wasted. No time she clinched tighter pulled her along so that they wound up directly owns path. Hey man she sure. I'm janice joplin. I say here yesterday. And i'm gonna be famous to man just like you dylan. Stop to look at janssen. The is is there was deep calm. He smiled lapped yet causing the moment to suck on the end of this hour smell cigarette. We're all gonna be famous dylan kept walking. Janice was starstruck. J. couldn't believe that dylan wasn't an eighty year old man which is what he sat on that record. Jane johnson to dylan's lp j.'s. House when janice wasn't spending bessie. Smith records jay janice were inseparable for the most part janice met jay one night at the asp. She was leaning against the bar. Short stature hair african american androgynous sweet funny janice had a hard time not crushing on her and they played pool sang along with some. Bobby bland's it was coming from the jukebox. In the corner she found out. The jay was four years or senior and that she had recently split the girlfriend. She moved to san francisco with within a few months. Janice had moved in with jay from an early age janice like boys and girls. She was bisexual at a time. When it wasn't just taboo was illegal but she aniston fear much especially that which prevented her from doing what she wanted. She would like who she liked love who she loved and crush on men and women equally but she knew the not everyone was already with such open expressions of love as she was in the spring of one thousand nine hundred sixty two janice tested the social waters of a same sex relationship when she kissed her friend. Patty mcqueen and a basement party patty's house. They had a captive audience. Which eventually included. Patty's husband dave who walked in on the to mid kiss after working the late shift like many red blooded conservative texas males in the early sixties. Dave thought he had witnessed and abomination he proceeded to drink heavily in then once. He was shifts through a bottle. Patty who was passed out in the bottle missed patti and hit another party guest. Jack smith square in the mouth knocked his frontier right out. There was blood everywhere. Patty screamed both in shock. Jack's busted face and also at her husband's bubbling rage. Jack frantically searched the floor in for his teeth and janice ended the evening by driving jack to a hospital. It was incidents like those prevented janice from living all aspects of her life out in the open so janice kept a relationship with jay on the download when she needed to. She had learned through experience. How to slip things under the rainer how to achieve the freedom to be who you wanted to be without leading the rest of the town know about it. Then although san francisco was the most tolerant city she had lived in today in san francisco. For sure wasn't taxes but old habits die hard the wondered if it was more than more than just just be careful jettas told jay loved her janus gave her a piece of her heart but it was just a piece wasn't the whole thing. Jay wondered if janice was incapable of true commitment or if she was incapable of committing to a same sex relationship. She talk the talk but she didn't always walked j. Been around plenty of part-time lesbians are day in the more. She was around janice the more she pegged her as a same sex tourist and then there was genesis erotic behavior. She would disappear for a day or two at a time. She run off with friends with people she had just met. Xi hitchhike chewy. Give a reason for leaving heads up. No i'll be back. And then she was scoring dope on our own all of the sudden scoring dope with new friends that she was j didn't know if they were exclusive janus it said she started to wonder janice was being honest with if they were a long term thing and then one day janice left left left she left jay and then she put down some money for cheap used car in left for new york city. She wouldn't be back for four months. We'll be right back after this were were were. The following presentation is an iheart three headphones on imprisoned thousand years from my own homeland. "December nineteen sixty six san francisco. Janice joplin didn't feel like herself. She felt like she was outside of her own body like she was observing her own existence. She wasn't even sure if she was janice joplin anymore. Then on the one hand it was a good thing that she didn't feel like yourself didn't sound like herself when she spoke to. Maybe she could look like yourself anymore because she was back at the fillmore auditorium to place been tossed out of not so long ago. She felt like she was betraying. Some unspoken rule by.

"You could be entertained all night by whatever appeared in front of us. Were cool about it. Captain on the down though 'cause even though this was austin in the year nineteen sixty six austin was still in texas in texas was still a long ways away from embracing the burgeoning counterculture. The ban knew it. They were living proof they were none other than the thirteenth floor elevators and they were playing shows under the radar while the elevators dared to challenge the status quo texas and the rednecks. Tommy was the group's electric jug player. The first and best of its kind a musical role he had invented and then used to set the elevators apart from everyone else frat bands like the whig the baby cakes and the fabulous chevelle. The elevators mike up tommaso klay whiskey chug and he would blow these propulsive grossly notes that sounded like transmissions from another planet. Tommy was demonstrating some of the new moves. He created these double notes that he'd get when he flicked his tongue as he tutored on the jugs top when the door was flung open austin police then the vice squad was inside. But it was a bummer trip. She returned to her hometown of port. Arthur defeated and skinny with a meth habit to threaten to kill her but she knew the port. Arthur was just as deadly for her shooting meth in san francisco so it was a relief when she enrolled in the university of texas at austin and crawled out of her oppressive hometowns. More in austin. She fell in with like minded crowd. Beat knicks artists and musicians the longhairs that would radicalize texas from the inside out. She brought her guitar therapy. Music was her therapy employed shows at folk loans in houston and austin and then she saw rocky at the methodist students center auditorium standing tall hair. Short looking as respectable as the vice squad wanted to but underneath that facade rocky outlaw there were all she saw the eye of providence and she was under its spell and then rocky saying his voice sharp and raw shrieking and screeching and she was under his spell and just like the thirteenth floor elevators carried out from the methodist student center auditorium on the wind janice would let herself be carried off black car full of hippies who had driven all the way from san francisco just to find her her old friend. Chet helms was putting together a band and thought janice would be perfect as a singer. So perfect the chat personally sent a few of his vice free on a road trip to track down. It was faded late. Such just any cool eight. of course. it's aid spiked with acid person than joins the acid test already in progress waits for the trip to begin the grateful dead set up on one side of the room in the merry pranksters are stationed on the other. There is no stage. The night is a blank canvas and from their stories differ. You could ask one hundred different people about what they experienced. And you get one hundred different answers. One guy said that every vibration that came from the dead's amplifiers the pranksters mobius loops was like novella. The music spoke to him and so did the noise it was like he was reading another novell. Every time a new vibration would enter his body. Someone else said that it rained inside the fillmore all night. It was just thunder and lightning alike went. He couldn't believe that it was raining inside the auditorium for one thing. The place had a working roof and also wasn't even raining outside. How is this even possible as he said all night long just walking around shouting and people's faces. How is this even possible. A girl said she saw god. He was smoking the lucky strike wearing a cloth. Diaper course was a guy said. He saw fire-breathing dragon playing a trumpet and another girl said that the flashing lights affected her so much that she never stopped seeing. She went home that night. Sometime after two wants the cops had shown up to shut it all down for the city's noise ordinances. She couldn't fall see all. She saw with a flashing lights not just flashing lights but faces in the flashing lights weeks months later. They're still there like they're imprinted on her brain. And then there was that one guy who totally freaked the fuck out. Lost his shit. He started receiving transmissions from jerry garcia's guitar and there were notes of i very musical on what jerry was playing the more the notes became signals like an sos being tapped out in morse code from the deck of a large boat tossed in a choppy sea like a plastic bag in the wind. Soon the guitar was no longer generating musical sounds. It was all monotone bleeps and blue chips and the bleeps and blues became scratching. Sounds like fingers on a chalkboard the longest fingernails dragging down the longest chalkboard to sound toward years. He thought his here's were bleeding. So he put his hands up to his ears touch them and then looked at his hands and when he did his hands reverse his right hand was on his left hand as left him was his right so he grabbed a nearby chair. Started to drag it across the floor to make the same scratching. Saudi heard coming from jerry's guitar. Maybe two similar scratching sounds would cancel each other out shown. That was stupid. That was going to help. All the guy couldn't take it anymore. He ran from the fillmore screaming. Got behind the wheel of his ford galaxie and ran into a ditch. Yes tested the fillmore. The trips festival longshoreman's hall public experiments were thousands of people could trip together in a controlled environment. That whatever you want them to be they could be a powerful source of inspiration of knowledge and creativity. They could be a portal to a personal health. A sensory overload of sights sounds and sensations could forever alter one's maive for janice joplin. Acid wasn't of great interest. She didn't like the lack of control. She felt like she was. I saw an acid test. Wasn't exactly see but san francisco. The city by the bay gave all the freaks and weirdoes outlet to do their thing. No matter how far out no matter how groove san francisco with it brother. There was a place where janice can be liberated. The city felt like freedom. The music she played with big brothers sounded like freedom freedom to do as she wanted to say what you want to dress the way. She's on it. She could shed the baggage of port. Arthur the town that attempted to beat the strange right out of in san francisco janice can be strange in the presence of others. Who are equally strange. Didn't matter what you into. Everybody was cool. The hate rundown and grungy was teeming with signs of the time flower. Anarchist's heads long haired freaky people kids like her who had escaped. Oppressive families ignorant towns regressive cultures. They walk together in street. Parades dance together. Public parks pashto. Plans in living rooms got their minds blown and concert halls. But even though janice didn't exactly conform to the non-conforming acid had clicked. San francisco would introduce many other drugs drugs. It was shut down or mine. Not expanded stuff that she'd send directly to her veins shots of vibrant insanity that would counteract drowsy feeling. She got from alcohol. Drugs were everywhere. The first head shop in the country was right. There smack dab in the middle of it all to walk into the psychedelic shop on haight street was to receive an assault. On the senses pipes posters incense cosmic swirl of colors aromas and free floating ideas. The books they offered weren't exactly light reading tomes on lsd eastern religion and metaphysics. Miss straight up. Commerce wasn't your bag. You can get your stuff for free from the diggers. An activist group who thought capitalism was the death of humanity they envisioned a communal economy devoid of money and handed out free food food that had been stolen from other local markets because well it all belong to the people anyway right so it wasn't really stealing according to them in san francisco's local. Music scene was equally expansive and challenging. The soundtrack of the revolution was free in big big melting. Pot were john. Lewis could be boiled down and built back up. San francisco had a sound in nineteen sixty six. That was instantly definable. Even if you couldn't put your finger on. It was the sound of the grateful. Dead big brother and the holding company and jefferson airplane quicksilver messenger service moby grape. The charlatans and so on october six thousand nine hundred sixty six when the state of california officially criminalized the possession of lsd. It felt like an attack to all the champions of strange who are working hard. Make the counterculture new reality. Even the date itself was a bad side. Ten six sixty six six six six. It's right there. The number of the beast hiding in plain sight. The children of the revolution decided they'd hold a peaceful protest on that very day. Oct six nineteen sixty six and so they drag this shit a few blocks up from their commute pads in the hate in the panhandle the golden gate park for the love pageant organizers spread the word to the orc and underground newspaper that it only published a few issues skiing with ride. The crowd is only around two thousand strong. They dressed in free flowing. Clothes and tightened headbands enough. Bees make burden street jobless. They brought tambourines and handmade signs and carried little. Children were spitting images of himself. They held hands and swung around in circles rings of people in constant motion. Kim is mary. Priced rolled up in their dayglo international harvester bus kids inside and sitting on top playing flutes and flying flags just back from a cross country track with annoyed the ever loving shit out of old school squares in every town they traipsed through. That was the freak. Their names like mountain girl. Cool breeze black mariah got. They called keys. The chief the grateful dead and big brother and the holding company perform the music that mirrored the action is held. The microphone stand so tight. Looked like she was trying to throttle the veins internet at large in her head. Whip from side to side as she and the boys prime the audience concerts of turned on truisms. They desire to be knocked. Socked rock into the throngs gathered at the panhandle that october afternoon. It was a peaceful battlecry and janice was there. Mike she was she was walking. She was sake as she was spreading. The good word to people like richard rodgers and the highway patrolman nebraska and the working class audience mother jews. "Hundred kids in that apartment next door to club. The bore the name that everyone called and like a hardboiled chicago blue sock. The rain blue was tough. Caring careful kind. What skeptical she took one. Look at janssen the boys when they blew into town and they're truly stink in loose california lingo wafting from every armpit month that she thought fox these california hippies chicago would be the band's wakeup call lorraine blue who do the dialing peter new the janice had stolen the sweater. Sure of it one minute. It was in the apartment in the next. It was wrapped around genesis body whether it belonged a blue at one of the four hundred children came and went matter. It couldn't afford a fuck this off to make enemies. They're already making enemies looking away. They look talking the way they talk and they're close enough to the edge as it was no money. No prospects no crowds no way to get back home. The residency was all the had. Even at the promoter give up hope and it stopped paying them regularly. Even if they had higher girls slathered in dayglo pain glitter and wearing a saran wrap turban and leotards dance provocatively wanted play just to get asses off the streets inside the way peter figured it started lifting stuff that wasn't there started making a bigger scene and the one they made by simply rolling in town. It could jeopardize the whole thing and then they'd be on the streets on their ass. San francisco was a long way down. Sure big brother and the holding company were a big deal down. There were one of the big bands leading the charge in the san francisco scene. A scene that included the grateful dead and jefferson airplane. It was the summer of nineteen sixty six. That scene had no wide yet. So chicago is a hartselle. People looked funny made comments about their long hair and the way they dress the band thought it would be different. That would be an uphill battle but it was a huge uphill battle and the hill was goddamn bound chicago to deck. Big brother and chicago didn't care about me brother either. Chicago was mecca for the blue as you can get knee deep in their muddy wolf. Buddy god jimmy reid. John lee hooker. The my namesake's little. Walter jacobson august rush. But i digress. And no one take one with from san francisco in august nineteen sixty six wanted to get me deep in chicago blues more than janice job all the other female singers in san francisco or on a joe bias folks social protesters but janice was bessie smith in a sea of jones. She saying the blues she live said she lived the raw nerves east live she had. She lived the towns that didn't want us around by people who rejected called names. Look down on her. Even in san francisco the very place that she was helping to put on the musical map she was a woman in a man's man's booze guzzling beatnik in a hotbed of acid. Had she been used in duke blood to victimized she came from texas oil. Talk port arthur. There was his conservative. She was liberal as backwards as she was progressive. She had it for the past in the rear view mirror. She made it back to san francisco of failure than it was only a matter of time before she wound up back in port arthur. Boston broke for all she the last chance she had blown chicago. Liberation come easy. Chicago wasn't a big friendly jam session where she in the boys rubbed elbows with guys of names like monty and sonny boy and slim wolf. Chicago was a slog chicago was playing got so for a few towns gathered around the bar. Chicago was getting raised eyebrows. Condescending comments from passersby on the street chicago is getting a coveted review in a local paper. At would be called ugly. Chicago was not if not the way. The gymnast and the gingrich chicago was pasta. Chicago was haters. Ville chicago was real. That look the california like its own separate university of nuts flakes in. Chicago wasn't enough now. Our own bandmates wanted to get personal. Peter wanted a big confrontation with janice. She knew she feel it coming. The way was looking at her new accusatory questions. He was dropping big. Wanted to have it out with her with stupid cashmere sweater. The probably really belong to anyone anyways she could tell. It was comedy the lecture of public flogging all the guys in the van would occasionally take a moment to dresser down the girl in the she was only the fucking lead singer. The i took that stupid sweater. She told you loud enough so that the rest of the bank could hear. Her laugh was nervous punctuation. She wanted to end. The conversation on a more pressing matters at hand also recognized how wound up and anxious. The whole band was at the moment. She hadn't forgotten about the offers. Paul rothschild from elektra records had made her not the band. Not big bro. Just turn before they left san francisco chicago. Peter hadn't forgotten either no one in the bed. No one could forget. That rostow came directly to janice behind of their backs to coax her away from big brother and the holding company in order to become the new member of a big blue supergroup. He was putting together. It was exactly what she was looking for an opportunity to give free but it was a big ask emit leaving behind the very group at a put her name on the san francisco map with big brother. She was part of a group a member of a gang. The guys in big brother weren't her backing. They were equals for better or for worse she told the banshee with thinking about it. Do this chicago thing right. Oh big brother little longer. Because on sundays she couldn't imagine ever be without but on other days days when they were stopped. Two thousand miles away from home with no money and no one to turn to these when she had to endure the third degree from the bass player for swiping a goddamn cashmere sweater off the back of a lonely chair in the rain in this apartment. Sundays being with the band was all she can think about. Then truly we'll be right back after this word were were support for this. Podcast comes from paypal. Small business owners. Anyone see me. All ten girls in line were surprised when around the corner came big brother and the holding company one of the bands that had opened the show that night. The cross leg interfered with the com- symmetry of his neatly tailored in well quaffed image but in moments of impatience across legs sent a message. He sat with kind of impatience. Befitting a sixty six year old composer. Met his receding hairline. Richard clash shouted. Do you have got something going to play inside. Davis office rodgers watched as davis pulled the record from its sleeve and gently placed it on a turntable. The record cover looked like comic book panel some five and dime schlock meant to attract the lowest common denominator at the top john and red and yellow electric shock fuzz. Red cheap least. They've got the good sense to admit what they are just thought to himself. He was willing to give davis a chance on this though he could tell it wasn't going to like it. You're gonna dig. In april of nineteen. Thirty seven gershwin was sitting in his usual chair at a barber shop in los angeles when he smelled burnt rubber. It was strong. It was so strong cut through the barbershops. Usual smells the shaving cream. The after shave the hair gershwin asked his barbara when it was what new chemical they were using. That smelled like that. Like a car. Breaks down a steep hill in san francisco. The barbara had no idea what gershon was going on about. At a rehearsal with the la philharmonic gershwin stumbled at the podium and had a grabbed sized. Keep himself from falling down in the coming weeks. The burnt rubber smell returned. It followed them around wherever he went haunted him. His knees buckled on stairs.
