Debt Ceiling News Pumps BTC
"Let's go straight into some market talk. Is it all around what's happened with the debt ceiling, do we think? Or is there a bit more to it? I'm not sure, but that news about the debt ceiling has really pushed up all asset classes, and Bitcoin had a bit of a shakeout last week. Even you had a bit of a panic sell trace, but we're back to the races now. Police. I don't know if I had a panic sell. Come on. We're back to the pre -sell -off levels. I guess it was the debt ceiling, which you can give a bit of an update to. Let's talk about that. Crypto prices had a nice little pump on Sunday night with the news that the US lawmakers had ended their stalemate over the government's debt ceiling debate. As part of the deal agreed between President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the plans are a 30 % tax on crypto mining also has been shelved as part of this deal. So I think what exactly was the deal as well? There's no debt ceiling until January 2025? I mean, that's interesting. It's the kicking the can down the road scenario that every country is doing basically, but particularly America has been leading the way for well over a decade. I'm certainly no financial expert, but what I do know is if you keep printing money, money is going to be useless. Absolutely. We've been on the way there for a long time. I'm sure that's why many people are in crypto. I didn't see this coming. I thought they'd sort of let what needs to happen happen, but how much further can they go? They sort of keep making their own rules and, like I said, keep kicking the can down the road. So the inevitable will happen at one point or another. All they're doing is, in my opinion, making what will inevitably happen

"All right, friends, well, today, as I said, we are hopefully wrapping up or at least putting a big momentary pause on the macro story that has dominated markets for the past few months. Yes, a deal has been reached in the debt ceiling standoff with both President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy making major concessions in order to move the matter forward. The deal on the table would suspend the debt ceiling entirely until the 1st of January 2025. Presumably this puts off the next dispute over federal borrowing until the middle of that year and uncapping the debt limit in the interim. The core of the argument is a two -year cap on federal spending, although each side is presenting the story slightly differently. The White House claims the spending cap would reduce spending by around $1 trillion over while the GOP argue that spending cuts are twice that level. New York Times analysis puts the spending reduction at around $55 billion next year and another $81 billion the following year. So let's talk about what's actually in the deal. The set of tradeoffs in the deal have caused outrage among numerous groups of ideologically aligned lawmakers and special interest groups on both sides of the aisle to the point where there are few truly happy with the compromise. Now that of course might mean in America's polarized politics that it's actually a good compromise deal. IRS funding has been cut, with $20 billion of the $80 billion in additional funding to bolster the tax department now being repurposed to fund discretionary government programs. And what's worth noting here is that early in the negotiations, this IRS funding was a red line for the president. You will no doubt remember when he said that he would not accept any deal that benefited quote wealthy tax cheats and crypto traders. Another aspect of the deal was that work requirements for food stamps recipients will be expanded. However, the cohort of people this will affect appears to be small. Only impacting recipients aged 50 to 54 while exempting veterans, the homeless and people who grew up in foster care. However, negligible the effect on the budget, the expansion of work requirements within the benefits program was an important symbolic policy for hardline conservatives. And small as the concession might seem, there are still many on the left who are very, very against

U.S. Crypto Firms Moving Offshore Are 'Welcome' in France
"We have actually a pair of stories today that really highlight some of the weird and fast changing dynamics around crypto regulation. First, in France, we have regulators and authorities basically saying they're open for business to crypto companies, among other things, the new mica regulatory framework that's taking hold in Europe, starting at believe in 2025 is when it goes into effect, but there are some transitional rules that are going to allow companies to operate already apparently 75 crypto companies are registered in France under those rules and they expect as many as 25 more. And that could include companies that are right now still in America because the new regulatory framework is going to be a lot friendlier than what we're getting in the U.S. at the same time the UK, which is no longer part of Europe, remember, is signaling much harsher approach with one regular saying that crypto should be regulated as gambling. There's a lot to be said about that, including the fact that the UK lawmaker is partly right about the gambling thing, but it's definitely part of a bigger shift in regulatory regimes. Are we going to see just a massive shift to companies operating maybe in Europe under this new regime? I would take that bet. I would definitely take that bet. The crypto space wants clear guidelines and that's what Mika provides, right? And I think we get to see a little bit of this jockeying between the continents and the UK here, specifically with France, warming to crypto, while the UK and others, especially the U.S., sort of take a more hardline stance. France has been quietly building up. I think it's sort of crypto chops and credibility in recent months. You have several big name events over there. You have several big name ministers sort of involved in some of these crypto events over in Paris specifically. So the idea that Francis emerging onto the scene, I think is something that we've been watching slowly bubble up over these past couple months. And again, it's all about this sort of regulatory dance that all these different countries are playing. This is a global technology. It can be treated differently in different countries. Some are going to be more hospitable. Some are going to be more wary, and where others see danger, some see opportunity.

Surviving The Hurricanes Of Change In College Football
"There are different genres, obviously, but in every genre, they've got to be aware of change. If I keep talking about Ronald Reagan and how I love Ronald Reagan, people will turn me off. I got to be talking about 2024 and 2025. Right now, college football I'm going to focus in on Buckeye talk and college football survivor show for a moment. Massive upheavals. NIL. Name image and likeness for the benefit of the audience who doesn't know they're getting paid for their name and she didn't like this. The playoffs are coming and gambling. This is like having an earthquake in the middle of a hurricane during a drought. They're just three giant things happening. How do you, how do you change with what are convulsions in your profession? Yeah, I think we try to emphasize the things that are staying the same Saturday afternoons are still fun, hanging out with your friends at a tailgate is still fun. You still hate your rivals, you still love the team that's wearing the Jersey colors that you love. And you also can't stop a hurricane. You can stand out in The Rain and yell, stop, it's not gonna still get wet, you're gonna get blown away. So you have to accept it. So you can't hang on to the past at only gripe about the change. You have to admit the change is coming, whether you like it or not, and then find the new opportunities. So the main thing is don't get stuck on the past because it's right on my train, man. We're not going back. And there are people who say, oh, I hate college sports now. It's like, well, we know you don't actually hit college sports. There's a lot of things you love. Tucker Carlson Breaks His Silence
"Tucker speaks. That's right, Tucker Carlson released a video last evening. Two minute video to be precise. It is a two minute and 14 second video. Well over 50 million people have viewed at least part of the video over 17 million people have watched the video in its entirety. At first glance, it just seems to kind of be a normal video of Tucker talking about big themes, but there's a lot to it. So first we must get our facts right, Tucker Carlson is still in a contract dispute with Fox. Reports are showing that Fox is going to try to keep Tucker Carlson on the sidelines, still pay him his $20 million salary, but keep him out of the 2024 race. That's number one. Number two, it's likely that Tucker Carlson has a non disparagement clause with Fox, which means anything he says publicly, he can't bash Fox, he can't attack Fox, he can't go after the leadership of Fox. Now we know that he's under contract at least until next spring, but maybe into the spring of 2025. Fox made a calculated move. Because of Tucker's effective critique of neoliberalism because of the mounting lawsuits or because of whatever you want to believe, they believe that it's okay to take a 47% rating hit, which is what's happened so far. Keep Tucker on the sideline and pay him $20 million a year and try to rebuild the network. You know, there's a, there's a tall poppy syndrome that exists at Fox News, tall poppy syndrome is a Scandinavian mentality, which is that no person can be greater than the others. And if you actually know tall poppy syndrome, it comes from this idea that as soon as you try to get too high above the rest, they take you out. It's literally how it works in growing poppies, literally if one gets too high, doesn't not even allowed to exist in the state of nature.

Is the Idea Pathogen Infecting Our Society Growing Stronger?
"Do you agree that I was saying, do you think this idea pathogen has infected to such a great state? For example, have they gotten stronger or weaker since you wrote the book diversity delusion? Well, they've gotten much stronger than the George Floyd moment. That was not George Floyd. Hysteria did not come out of nowhere, Charlie. It's growing, and it's been growing for decades, but George Floyd was really a watershed when you had this universal chorus of elite institutions all declaring themselves racist. All promising these preposterous quotas that investment banks were going to be 50 or 30% black by 2025, which is just impossible with any shred of meritocracy when you look at the actual distribution of scores on the business school admissions test or on the GREs or on the SATs. And you had science magazines, the leading journals of scientific research like jama or lancet publishing front page, full spread issues on racism of medicine and science. So it's gotten a lot worse and the pressure has gotten a lot worse to destroy meritocratic standards in favor of diversity.

California's Utility Bill System Goes Full Communist
"What does it feel like? To live in a socialist society in a socialist state. Well, we don't have to go to North Korea to find out or China. We can look at California, which is the closest thing that we have. And it's the direction that California is moving. I'm not saying California is implemented full socialism, but it's clearly headed in that in that direction. And here's the latest example of it. Three of the biggest utility companies are saying they have in fact been pushed by the California democratic legislature, but they're also now saying this of their own initiative, that they want to institute starting next starting in 2025. So not next year, but the year after this, a program in which they charge for utilities. Based upon how much money you make. And let's think about this because of how absurd it is. Imagine if you were to go to the grocery store and you pick up a carton of milk. And the carton of milk says $3, $4. You walk up to the counter and you say, what's the price of this car in the milk? And they say, well, how much do you make? And it turns out that if you make under $50,000 you pay $2, if you make a $100,000, you pay $3 and if you make $300,000, you pay double that. Well, this is the socialist principle. Let's remember what Karl Marx said from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs. And so the rationale of socialism is that for people who have needs, I need milk, I need utilities. I should be able to pay what I can afford to pay. So again, this is a little different than the state providing kind of a subsidy or basically people who have a very low income receiving a card in which they can go to the grocery store and buy some groceries. That is a government handout, but to create a proportional structure in which you pay a utility bill, the California utility bills are high.

'No Math Formula' to Reparations Plan for Blacks in San Francisco
"Now I have a question. What happens after they make their and work their way through, the $5 billion reparation and how long does that reparation last? Is it multi generational, much like the public housing? Where you have generations of people now living in public housing? Is that what we're talking about here? So if grandma gets $5 million and your mom gets $5 million, will you get $5 million? Are we talking about, say, a family of 5 could all of a sudden become multi millionaires? Just because of the color of their skin isn't America great. That tax, which had been suspended for years, was recommended for another suspension through 2025, but even that money would not come close to covering the cost. San Francisco reports that according to the city's budget office, the tax would only raise about $10.2 million a year. But there's more ladies and gentlemen. Here Comes Britcoin...
"Let's turn to our main topic Bret coin. The UK treasury and the Bank of England are expanding the discussion of a retail CBDC, inviting public comment on a consultation paper released on Tuesday. Ahead of the release, the treasury and the Bank of England released a joint statement saying that, quote, on the basis of our work to date, the Bank of England and HM treasury judge that it is likely a digital pound will be needed in the future. It's too early to commit to build the infrastructure for one, but we are convinced that further preparatory work is justified. The consultation is designed to inform the decision around whether or not to build the infrastructure for a digital pound. With a pilot test not anticipated before 2025. While many of the design features are up for debate, UK authorities are certain of one thing that they don't want the digital pound referred to exactly as I'm referring to it here as Bitcoin. Bank of England deputy governor John cunliffe set at a speech launching the consultation, quote, the digital pound can be confusing in people's minds with crypto assets, such as Bitcoin. I should take this opportunity to correct this misapprehension. Indeed, nothing could be further from the truth. Now, the paper goes into the many risks of launching a retail CBDC ranging from privacy risks to the risk of bank runs, crippling the financial system, should the CBDC outcompete commercial bank deposits. Overall, the consultation is one of the more complete and open attempts to publicly talk through the pros and cons of a retail CBDC we've seen from a government to date. One note from the proposal that has captured many headlines is a proposal that would cap citizen CBDC holdings somewhere in the 10,000 to 20,000 pound range to quote strike an appropriate balance between managing risks and supporting wide usability of the digital pound. This limit would allow a majority of UK wage earners to take their salary in the CBDC, but would still create competition with commercial banks. The digital pound would also offer no interest allowing banks to easily offer competitive terms on deposit accounts. Now one of the concerns articulated is that a CBDC could accidentally destabilize the commercial banking system. Currently banks use deposits as a cheap form of funding for loans. Without that flow of deposits, banks could increasingly find themselves reliant on more expensive wholesale markets, driving up borrowing costs for users.

Yeah, it's collateral punishment for what is supposed to be a misdemeanor case and to your point that you made during my introduction. I would argue that I paid dearly for this class B misdemeanor charge. Now, I have no prior criminal record. This is my only conviction on my record. And for this class B misdemeanor charge, I spent two and a half days in jail, three months on house arrest. This is my sentence. Three months of house arrest, three years of federal probation, 60 hours of community service. I was given the maximum fine of $5000. I was ordered to pay $500 restitution to the capitol, although it was acknowledged that I didn't engage in any destruction or vandalism to the capitol. And I was also given court ordered mental health services as part of my sentence. Now, I'm going to be on federal probation until the year 2025. On my class B misdemeanor charge. But I have served every aspect of my sentence I paid my fines. I've paid my restitution. I did my house arrest. I spent my time in jail. Things where a lot of people staked FTT. Maybe somebody can correct me exactly what those are or you can look it up here in a second. But very interesting to see what's going to happen with that as well. But as is he trying to backdoor FTT as a security, I don't think it's going to work. So you think they could give her immunity, right? Like usually you're pleading guilty to certain charges and you're getting immunity potentially from other charges even if it was from CFTC or SEC. Max Santana says, do you think there's a chance SPF does zero jail time? No, I think he's getting closer to life than zero. I think he's getting closer to life. Somebody had a weird prediction. I saw today a thread where they were saying he was going to indict a hundred people and get zero jail time. And I was like, what? No, there's not a hundred people involved. That's what I was that's what I was wondering. Guys, there's,

"I can't say I disagree with it. Is clay Hilton because of all the guys on here with the exception probably of Jim Mora and Jerry kill. We probably know the most about clay helton. Now he's in a very different job in a very different place. I don't know. Were you tempted to give him worse than us? No, because you know, sometimes the way people talk about play health and you were thinking he went like 12 and 40 at USC. You know, he did win a rose bowl. Things went south from there. And this isn't going to be USC. You know, I'm not ruling out the possibility that he has some success at Georgia southern. I don't think I realize this. Georgia southern has a very proud football tradition going back to their FCS days. I think people realize that they know the legend, you know, I hear it a lot whenever I mention shellenberger, hey, shouldn't our cross will be in there. And the right hand should be in there. They fire coaches there. They're not going to minor bowl games or 7 and it's not good enough there. The guy they just fired went ten and three a couple years ago, Chad lunsford. So I think the bar that clay Alton's gonna have to hit is like the sun belt version of what the bar he was gonna have to hit at USC and I think that's gonna be hard to do. Of all the coaches in the group of 5, give me two that you're very fascinated to see how they do. Don't say more head. One is Stan drayton. Who, if you follow college football, you know him as a very successful running backs coach for a very long time, one of the most coaching Ezekiel Elliott at Ohio State, bijan Robinson now. He was Brian Westbrook's coach at Villanova and but, you know, I think, has remained to how many running back coaches become household names. Not really, right? So he's getting a shot at temple, which you talk about, you know, hires that felt doomed from the start, rod Kerry did not impress anybody. He didn't make a very long he had some ties he, like I said, he went to college in Pennsylvania, he coached a villain over that was a long time ago. I'm just curious to see how he does. Now he has a shot running a program and a program that's, you know, in the AAC and has had recent success, so I'm curious on that one. I think the most, this is totally gone under the radar, but what happened at Hawaii with Todd Graham? Being run out of there. And then June Jones bowed out of the coaching search. So now you got Timmy after a lobby after lobbying for the job and then getting offered it, getting offered a very unrealistic set of circumstances. Who he could hire as assistant coaches? I remembering that right? Yeah, I mean that right. There was just a lot of things that were kind of unrealistic for him to take the job and under those circumstances, and then it became very public that he talked about it and they talked about it in ways that usually don't happen and then Timmy Chang was a great player there. Great player 4 June Jones. Ended up getting the job. Yeah, I mean, if you're a college football fan, like maybe 35 years or older, you remember Jimmy Chang. He was a legend there. He was putting up, I mean, now there's a lot of quarterbacks that hit those kind of numbers, but he was putting up insane passing numbers every year in that offense. And so I think it made a lot of sense for them to bring him in, you know, the fan base, the actually, even more than the fan base, the community, the former players. Everybody very fractured from the Todd Graham experiment. And so of course you're gonna unite behind Timmy Chang, he's Hawaii football. I just don't know if he's has the experience to run a program. He was wide receivers coach. So and hadn't been in coaching for that long, frankly. So will he, I think it would be a great story if Timmy Chang leads Hawaii to glory. He's there. He's their pat Fitzgerald, you know? He would be that kind of guy. I just don't know if he can do it. Well, I know that as much as you would love to go to Hawaii our editor has put you on. I guess from what I understand three of the stops you were going to, first this spring, as we can share with our listeners, you are going to see Don Brown at UMass. Jerry kill in Las Cruces and then our buddy Jim Mora in stores. I'm going to take on that. Itinerary quite quite, but yeah, so now that we've given away all the story has the article, but if I'm not saying what the athletic dot com slash the audible $1 a month right now. $1 a month for 6 months, tremendous deal. And then you'll also be able to read this story that Bruce and Antonio Morales are writing that's going to go up Monday as well. Tell us about that. All right, so we have been working on what coaches look for when they turn on the film in recruits from every position. What's the thing that jumps out at them, why? And it's been fascinating. I've talked to a ton of coaches this week for this. And so you get a kind of get into this and I appreciate Antonio for enlisting me on this with him is you just it's a good way to look under the hood of college football programs and hear a lot of insight, especially this time of year, and so I feel like after this story goes up, Elijah can't see will probably be more of a household name among college football fans. I don't know if unless you're an ACC fan, if you know much about him, I'm not saying he's Aaron Donald ish, but I think there's definitely some parallels from Peter has another short super explosive D lineman who probably was a three star guy with a lot of people missed on just because he was not a measurable guy, but maybe that has changed. So in the course of this, there's just some really, really rich material. You know, talking to position coaches. And some head coaches. I mean, one of the guys on your list, Mike mcentire is the new head coach at FIU, but what he really got on my radar was he was the old miss assistant coach who found Patrick Willis, and so he was a good ideal person to ask about what you're looking for. Any coach in the NFL and what you look for in linebackers and how the game has changed. And I think the things that a lot, like what I've heard and what I think Antonio has heard is a lot of this stuff coaches maybe coveted and looked for, not that long ago aren't things that they're looking for as much now because the game has changed. And Aaron Donald to some degree has changed the way a lot of coaches evaluate D linemen and some of the rules have changed the way people. You know, it's like so it's been a really fascinating cross section to see what people look for and to get in the weeds of the recruiting process. You had a story a couple years ago. The one year that Mel Tucker was at Colorado, right? You talk to him in depth about his evaluation process. And it was interesting to me because it kind of went against the grain of what you're talking about. He didn't want to find the undersized Aaron Donald type. He was, you know, this is the Nick Saban Kirby smart. He was adamant. You have to recruit big dudes. Thank you. Well, what was interesting for me at that point? And he and I had talked a lot for that story was I remember thinking in pretty much asking him at this point..

So your view is that we should radically restructure the professional and social fabric of the western industrial world through awning sunset so you can get senator switching labor very moton. Well that's that's sounds all perfectly reasonable. We should probably move on to a consideration of the residents association. That is the community organization facebook page. What's up group or whatever in which those who live in a certain area gather to exchange information offer or request assistance discuss matters of mutual concern and wonder out loud. What the deal is that more on with the flashy car who thinks everyone within six blocks wants to hear the engine revving for half an hour midnight and why yes. I am speaking from a certain amount of personal experience page. Are you in fact. Are you now or have you ever been a member of residents association. No come on you without without wishing to give away too much. You do leave part of london in which would be expected to. People would be members of very serious residents one. Now that i'm out in this sort of suburban mecca. Yes there are probably more where you are. I would residents association have provisional wings. No so. I'm i'm sure there are some but i think there's the the slightly old amendment but when i was living in In south london in in camberwell during the first sort of lock down so that march two thousand twenty period. While the whole of twenty. And i wasn't part of a residence What's up but what happened very quickly. As as we went into lockdown as particularly a lot of older people were told to share the people with told shield Mutual aid creeps popping up across london picky in south london and they were fantastic. The organizers you kind of joined the the One fuel bara and then by the end you're on a mutual. Just feel street. So the street the street adjacent mind. We had a mutual aid group And we ended up starting to do shopping for some of the people who are elderly in the in the estate opposite as i was discussing with you earlier I did barry shopping while barry likes lots of expensive knocks from holland and barrett shelby. Retake you in arlington barrett question. Go barring waiting for morrison's but anyway barry do quite like doing shopping for and we were doing so well into the summer. Twenty twenty little conversation. No that was the only time. Barry was taking liberties a he did like his macadamia is but it was amazing and i thought it was funny. My ideal retirement sending gullible. Well-meaning young people apple increasingly chew seven's various. Sorry that's the twist nobody expected. Because i'm very very specific. Sort of legume. Are you active in a residents association in italy. I really feel like. I want to be able to say something like that. I've just been helping my community going shopping for over-priced nuts. But i can't do it so instead you just took the view stuff from leaking mccaw themselves. That's not true. i'm just you know. I'm yet to footing him. Also to the language and it will be very hard for me to be a member But no but having said that in the building i used to live in there was a sort of group email going round that did involve everything to do with the building and the person who seemed to be in charge back go very irate about recycling being put take pictures of like discarded pizza boxes that weren't in the paper recycling bin and send them to every single person on the email that this is the kind of thing that i'm both tantalized by and afraid of where i live in london there are. There's definitely a residents association for my specific local. Bit of which. I'm gonna confess right now. I m e jews paying member and the and there's there is a printed old school newsletter that comes round every month. i do There is very helpful. Facebook page and actually it is an almost entirely exceed isn't entirely positive thing it's helpful uncourteous and well meaning and community minded also told and i have not head-to-heads heads. Look that there is a facebook page for the much wider larger suburb which i am reliably informed is a total been fire. Daily i'm andrew muller and still with me and still were their thumbs on the pulse of the geist patron and ed stock here in the u k next. Monday is a bank holiday. But what if every. Monday was in france ahead of next year's election. There is a certain amount of klima for francis already famously. Indolent thirty five hour workweek to be reduced further to thirty two hours. All of them to be bowled over in just four days. Attempts have been made at this sort of thing before earlier this year. Spain launched a pilot project for a four day working week and this program will at this time. Rise above the temptation of making cheap jokes about that being an increase Page where are we on this. That was a little bit of medicine. A phobia they're just manage to go away with fink like good away with Page how enthused would you be about a four day working week. L. pretty enthused. Andrew is not just because i am not lazy. I like working. But i'm very much an inherent to something of just learn about which is called parkinson's law which basically says the all tasks expand to fill the time allotted to complete them brothers true. I have in my time known of the feeling of taking all week to write. A two hundred would record review. Yeah exactly on. This has happened to me. I mean tell you this company that you have a busy week to quiet weeks and yet i'm in usually for the same of ours and i kind of just think to myself you know it's about the quality of work on producing the conservative time. I'm spending doing the work. And you know. I'm someone that has interests outside of work hoagies extracurricular activities. Sorry guys it would be amazing for one day week for me to be able to spend time doing that. Because that also enriched my life and i just think that why would be just as productive Probably a little bit happier. It was lucky for the week supposed model railways will build the what do you think are their industries though. Wear possibly like the one we work in where it just wouldn't work all that. Well i mean the. I mean i know there will be people especially you know. Freelance is such myself laughing. Mirthless lee at the idea that the working week only has for more than a freelance android. And even call yourself by Can get patronized at home. I mean that you know mondays. A bank holiday and People from monaco working on that day so obviously It doesn't work for everything. But i think it's interesting. What page said this idea that you can sort of. If if you have less time you can perhaps You know make it work. So i think i like the idea of a four day working week. Who wouldn't frankly except my new mackerel seemed to be trying to undo that whole notion since he's been empower and it's interesting. This is coming from the left because frankly That don't really have much hope of of of coming back into power in in french presidential elections in two thousand twenty two patients. She wants to say something about this particularly in the french context. I think what's interesting is once they introduced this Thirty five hour working week I think it was in about twenty years ago There was an expectation that it was going to. You know. Rods changed unemployment rates. Which hasn't really happened they've kind of stagnated a little bit particularly in in recent times And what seems to be happening. Is that actually. People are still working long hours. But those hours are legally builders overtime and then from that over time you get to take extra holidays so people are kind of you know essentially getting another twenty holidays about say another thing. I'm not against. But i think you know what's difficult here is the idea of state control and regulation within that as opposed to allowing different companies to different industries to walk out what works for them. What works for their employees which may be could be a better way of doing things. I still wanna four. We talked about pages mobile railways. What would you do with your extra day off. I think i'd sleep walking. Just bring me sleep..

"I have to say that it's been good to be back. And i know miss this place and the people. When i head back across the atlantic on sunday for monica twenty four. I'm chris tarmac. That was monaco's news editor christian back in washington dc. Well let's move along now to the oil catching purchase for somewhere north of one billion. Us dollars of politico by the german media leviathan axel springer politico currently employs five hundred or so journalists and long may that continue one supposes. Probably good news in this day and age that someone wants to value a media company in ten figures if that's how many zeros are an opinion i think that's right. It certainly seems more encouraging than the weeks of the big media story another round of layoffs advice following vices latest pivot to whatever it is this time ed. Let's look at what might be the good news here. I mean obviously the the media enjoys little more than bemoaning the state of itself but if somebody is willing willing rather to built a billion dollars on a relatively new outlet like politico that suggests that things rotich doesn't it. I mean you'd say so. I mean i north of a billion dollars. How does seem like a lot of money. i mean how. How however many notes there are in that this is a lot of money and it is testament to the that you know politico has been doing very well Politico is good. It does good work and people like that sort of insider type reporting you know there are lots and lots and lots of political junkies out there who enjoys coverage and you know in many ways this spring at tie up you know. It's not entirely new. They have a relationship going back to two thousand fourteen. A joint-venture for the for the europe edition of politico and so The german company has loan had a vested interest in the company and oversee. You know the other side is that you know media lab. The media. landscape like other sectors is consolidating. Because you know some of this more plaza during while being sold off cetera et cetera. So we are saying that sort of consolidation idea. Don't forget that Another sort of us story. Vox media bought a new york magazine back. In two thousand and nine a couple of years ago another consolidation. Vox media Buying up quite a few companies and And so this is part of that. But i think you know the the the money is impressive and is doing well so i think it's good for everyone. Involved actual spring as an ambitious gemin- bryant that seems to be wanting to expand. So let's say something positive for once about the media right well indeed pay. I wonder myself my own pet theory. is the media coverage of media. Stories is skewed by the fact that journalists basically a mobile dreadful whinges who enjoy little more than complaining to each other about how everything is hundred percent today. No kind of a onto ed's point like political. I just think i is good and it really. Does it proved itself Very much so with it's kind of it's inside a coverage. I mean i am a radio producer. I breed the brussels playbook every morning and it's good you know i mean it's the way in which they write it. It's very much so it's totally packed. Full of information it's also quite funny You also get the odd dig at politicians. You really get a sense of the personalities actually within brussels as well which i think is is an interesting thing at something. That other organizations aren't really doing. I also think it's got quite nice interface and our that sounds quite boring to say but there's so many news websites these days when you go on to them something like the independent and there's like a son who's a sliver of horizontal slither in the bottom corner of article that's like sandwich by targeted ads of clothes. I can't afford an officer about ten seconds. I don't care who's written this piece Icon read it and you look on political it. Make sense They've got a very good brand. I think it's very recognizable They just they just all their class act. And i. I think this is a good sign. Bring have gone into that. Us markets although obviously trying to expand that they've recently bought biz insider. I'm morning breath as well. Which is more of a another business. Focused digital platform clearly is going to be there more political arm as you will. I'm yeah i think. I think i think it's a good thing. Moving old from what page was correctly observing near about the complete on readability of the independence website. It does kind of bring us to the question of what vice thinks. It's doing the vice pivot. Video and associated layoffs is a bit of a hardy perennial. But how do you personally of video leaping out of websites at you. I mean for me it. It's about my least favorite way to absorb information on. Probably not the person to judge whether you're so with the times and not king unlike words. I like things written but voices management in the defense do claim that on their noisy and monchy sites. That's their music. And their food sites that text consumption has declined in recent years by seventy five percent and we have to also look at the demographic. That vice is is aimed out. I remember when i was based in new york Actually we we. We're doing a sort of a fair looking for prospective interns for our new york bureau. And i remember the line vice was longer than monaco's i was telling at the time but the reason i'm telling you this it's been quite full like grace quality not quantity i. It's been exactly exactly it's those at one point. Was the media brown. You know everyone of a certain age wanted to work for. And i feel that perhaps It's lost a bit of that appeal. It's been slightly tainted. Perhaps it is not quite the same as it used to be but i and we've seen that as one of their one hundred fifty five playoffs last year and on some more at this time around. I don't know if this this this talk of pivoting to to video is partly a way of spinning it in a positive way But obviously it's been successful in the video failed and perhaps Some of its consumers. Like you said prefer that taqtaq tech attack or something. That isn't a brand of mint. I think on devastating insight. We will take a break. And i thought i was the one who is going to sound out of touch. This is the monocle daily. I will probably be back without panel just after this for more than one hundred thirty years. Alleanza has expanded its business unstretched. It's brand new.

"Vaccinated. The tension has quietly seeped into lots of different strata of society and business. A wave of optimism felt in the first half of the year as vaccinations were made freely. Available has shifted into uncertainty about the way forward and exactly how freely to live with the reality of the delta variant in washington most businesses and government offices are still operating remotely making it hard to network. I spoke to think tanks who are busy drawing and redrawing plans for how to bring back in person events frustrated that there doesn't seem to be a fixed blueprint and that it feels like it's every business for themselves and then there's the frustration over travel. One person i spoke to said the ongoing restrictions barring europeans from entering the united states even while americans like me are allowed to freely travel in and out of the country was having a noticeable dampening effect on transatlantic views of the biden administration. Despite joe biden promising. That america was back when he entered office. The border restrictions are the most visible example that his instincts in many cases are still to keep america closed. schools. I've spoken to school administrators and parents who are dreading the start of a new term in these coming weeks. Mandates for teachers and staff to get vaccinated are inevitable after the fda gave its final and full approval to the pfizer. Biotech vaccine that carries its own headache as there are fears that staff who had refused to.

"To say if listeners. Andrew miller is wearing a show with this sleeves rolled up. He's australian you think you'd be used to identify the warmth and i'm worrying about seven layers. I'm still codes that we got it. Isn't that but conversation. Went in the direction. I was not anticipated. Head to head on who has the title. Basically we're basically where is just all agreeing that it's quite cold in here. Yeah okay right. Yeah absolute liquid every business here every week. Let's let's perhaps try pushing on with the news of the day shelley. On europe's borders fences are already going up. Greece has added extra fortifications to its frontier with turkey. Turkey is doing likewise along its border. With iran the hundred thousand or so. Afghans who have been airlifted out of kabul in the last couple of weeks will not be the last to flee the reinstalled taliban it is likely that most will get no further than iran or pakistan as has been the case during previous afghan refugee exodus but many will make their way to europe and into the center of a recurrence of a by now familiar political franca page. It's never an edifying spectacle when you see countries are putting fences to keep people out. Is that actually the solution. Though i i didn't think so angie baz you said in your introduction that is essentially. What's happening right now in turkey in southern europe. You've got greece reinforcing. Its land border with turkey. A forty kilometer extension of the fence in in its final stages. And you've got a authorities in turkey. Planning to add sixty four kilometers by the end of the year to avoidable. Started in two thousand seventeen with iran. So whether we like him on these. These walls are happening but like you said. Is this a solution to the problem. I don't think so. I think the end of the day and this is i think often. The argument is brought up with people who are on on the left side of things. It's not going to stop people coming with. You have a wall or not. it's just gonna put those people in more precarious situations is gonna mean. They're going to do more desperate things to try and reach safety. It isn't a solution What would be a solution is places in europe who are able to take in refugees to to be putting their hands to be putting forward infrastructure money To help but again. We're not saying that happened either. I mean you wouldn't expect it. Really of countries within century. We saw what happened in two thousand fifteen and those countries aren't getting any more liberal. But you perhaps would expect it in countries further towards the west. You've already got macron kind of coming out and saying oh you know we all going to take measures to make sure there's not this big solve refugee influx. he's playing to a domestic crowd. It's already been politicized in a way that just means that i don't know how much hope we have for this kind of coherent response for a response actually going to make a difference as page correctly points out. Emmanuel macron who possibly not coincidentally is facing reelection next year has already got out in front of this. He's saying france should quote anticipate and protect itself from a wave of migrants. I'm the contours of this thing. Wearily familiar to spy now as opposed we have the consolation that the vote to leave the eu again is the one thing that hasn't changed the reality whether we like it or not That you just don't lose votes beating up on refugees refugees. I mean just just one. Point is the i mean. Yes that may be true. I think another thing. I'll answer that question in the second is the this is a reminder that you know migration problems don't go way that they've always been there but it just sort of crops up in the press sporadically and in a way. That's a very sad thing. Remember in two thousand and five death of allen kurdi that obviously made newspapers around the world. Suddenly everyone was talking about migration. It's been out the press. But if you live in italy like do you see the fact that lampedusa in the south. The end of the south of sicily has migrants coming all the time. Two thousand arrived in maine twenty four hours and so this is a constant theme that no politician has a has managed to so but as pays talked about a little bit You know with many countries in europe sort of moving to the right or having already moved to the right yes it can be advantageous sadly for politicians to sort of get tough. And we're seeing that in france in particular which you talked about Obviously macro Is is going to be in a tough position. It looks at the moment. A recent poll had him tied on twenty four percent with nine lapenne. Sir looks like obviously a lot can change. That could be one of the second round of votes again in france and obviously you see already that he may be moving a bit to the right sort of pop. Some of those voters who who have been Tempted to vote For marine le pen. And we're seeing it with other politicians particularly in france Oversee there's a there's a whole sort of a group of people on the right who have put their name forward to be candidates For this twenty. Twenty two. I action including that my mom michelle bonnie who decided and he he obviously that he was Francis the the us rather chief brexit negotiator and. He's already said that he wants to get tough on on on immigration. So he he's made up pretty clear Another right wing candidate. Crt has said that he wants france to remain franz and zeus. I said that he liked to see christian values. included in france's constitution so That's just an example of one country. But that's how you can see that sort of tool on on migration. Yeah that's not so much. The dog whistle as the full blown symphony orchestra. They're page do we. Whenever this is recurrent story and ed is quite right in making the point that the story never actually goes away. It's just occasionally a new twist to it which the media is drawn to because it's kind of a novelty but doesn't strike you that i mean. Obviously people and countries react to immigration emotionally but rather than logically. But we might we'd value judgments depending on where the migrants coming from because it strikes me in this country which you know has elected a very sort of you know anti-immigration government and which voted to leave the eu largely because of immigration. And yet when it has floated over the last year or so that may be three hundred twenty thousand people from hong kong. Might move here in the next five years. Which is the home. Office's own estimate the usual suspects of just seem to be quite fun about it now. One hundred percent angie. I mean of course with hong kong. There's there's some history there the thing is we were britain's concerned where isn't there whereas no quite quiet now. Of course i mean. I think that sort of discrimination and then these these sort of sort of stereotypes that we pin onto people. We definitely haven't got rid of those and probably won't be anytime soon. It's about you know often it's about you know what come the migrant bring to society all they educated are they going to bring wealth. I think that's probably maybe a consideration when it comes to people who are migrating from hong kong and i think we don't necessarily You know have the same amount of understanding about Migrants who are coming from from different parts of the world. So we'll say andrew well. Let's leave the subject with a plug for tomorrow's edition of the foreign desk which does take a longer look at. The afghan diaspora. Energy includes a report from one of those new editions to it One of the people who was able to get out of the extraordinary chaos in kabul. Let's move along now to monaco's news editor christchurch mac. He has been in his native washington. Dc these last two weeks he sent us. This dispatch on the mood in the country as we approach the twentieth anniversary of september eleventh..

"They were young her. Because if you look at some of the baby boomer's that grew up especially the older baby boomers that grew up in the sixties. And look at what happened to them. It's you know it didn't really work out now. You know. I don't want you to not be hopeful. Jury is very much still out. It's interesting it is an interesting aspect. I do think though that the the differences you know the the children of the sixties had a very different philosophies and i think that the generation the millennials and the gen z gen z is coming up behind them. I know they're the tech. Generation truths tech generation is coming. I think that it's it's not quite as quite as much space between societal norms. And what they think. But that's just me. I could be wrong will be the interesting thing that you know. Five ten years from now you'll start to see well. The fact that a lot of these young men were raised by single mothers or they up in households were both Parents worked and they st. They're they're more than older generations. They might have a very different attitude To toward it but you know again you just don't know when push comes to shove how willing people are to you know share and give credits so that that's And i think the companies are going to try to you. Know push that but sometimes it's very hard to do that so we'll see we'll have you and i will be back twenty twenty five. We'll have this money twenty five. We'll say in you know when by that we'll have a whole list of you know more stats on You know who's in the c. Suite in corporate america so i think that yes. People are very concerned about that I think that the other big issue that is going to still reverberate from the pandemic is health and safety because we are hopefully getting out of this. People can get vaccines now. We know how to this problem in terms of masking in back scenes but a lot of experts and again i don't mean to be the daughter of doom say that this will not be the last pandemic That we face just because of the travel. open borders. This is not. This is going to continue happening. So i think that it's made companies so much more aware of the health and safety of their employees and the impact that the company has on the environment. So if you just take first of all the design of companies. You're going to see okay. What more companies are paying attention to things that we as may be workers wouldn't necessarily notice in terms of just the hp system and is the air getting circulated. Enough is is that it's become so much more important to companies than ever really was before and now i think even employees asked about it because they're much more in tune to their safety. And what what kind of fabrics are these you know. Is this going to retain germs. Or resist germ repellent Fabric what kind of cleaners are you using our degrees chemicals in against just started a whole thought process about where i am and what effect this environment is having on me but beyond just the physical space of the were. The workers do their jobs. I'm really starting to think about how they impact the environment. Because i think it's hard for most people to say that we we're not experiencing climate change if you look at you know with wildfires and floods that we are impacting this and it sort of all interconnected because no one really knows how the virus Got from the bats to the people but most people will tell you they think it's because we as humans keep infringing on the natural habitat of the animals and that is key. You know probably going to keep happening so you'll probably see more of this transference from animal diseases to humans and we don't have their system so we obviously can't deal with it so i think you're going to see companies really start to spend more time more money on becoming more sustainable again talking about the younger people. That is something that is very important to younger generations in a way that it probably was not to older generations. Because you know they didn't really think really think about it. Wasn't you know the environment was not an issue for people that were may be in their sixties fifties now when they were growing up right especially in the workplace. Yeah these people if no the younger generation has grown up with the environment being a challenge so they are looking at it more more carefully and more seriously than older generation which is a good thing. Yes it it'd be a very good thing. Well we are so excited Had you on the show. Thank you fun. Some great information. We appreciate it so much. That's our show for today. Okay well thank you. "The the industry association so we can say it's called the decay Anyway they went to the eu commission. And they said it's not fair because tesla have their approved repair is and only they can get access to tesla's resources Which is against e. U. rules tesla were then forced to comply by the look of this article. And again i'm i'm converting it from german to english. So that's correct Tesla has has now as the beginning of the year made that information available to anyone. So small garages that body repairs and to anyone but if you're not on tesla's list of preferred repair is that all also there's a sting in the tail. They've opened it up but they also charge people one hundred twenty five euros an hour to use the diagnostic and programming software and thirty euros an hour to enter the technical portal. So that complaints going back into the eu or at least the german regulates is to say it's discriminate serie and of course small gay marriages repairs maintenance. People would have to pass that onto the customer. Therefore the official tesla. Paris third party ones on the list would be able to offer a better deal at it discriminates. So we'll see where that goes I don't know how it's difficult how you feel about that because alcazar expensive we want to take care of them and also. I liked the idea. That tesla has a list of approved. Third party repair is if they can't do something They've the garage. I'm taking you through. Has at least been vetted in some way Like i said i think about that. Lie about combustion kaos anyone can fix the combustion car but i don't know and tesla's we as well because it's a closed ecosystem so they can turn your car off if they want to. They have to have turned off charging for people's cars who people who call was wrecked or an insurance write-off but they got go come back on the road and fixed it tested said. Nah an plugging into our superchargers and turn are also. You're not charging at all on anyone's network dc fast charging turning off so It's it's a weird situation. It's not like combustion cars were when you bought the car. The car is yours. We've tesla when you fall the car. They never let go of it. It's a nice way to describe think best way to describe it. Let's talk about going racing with.

"If you look at the vehicles online You can pick up a small battery one like an old one for about fifteen grand here in the uk in van in twenty four kilowatt hour van outfit. It's a panel van as well also cbs's seven or eight seats in the envy two hundred but look the nuance with the big battery. The forty kilowatt hour battery going full by the look of it. Twenty seven twenty eight grand very useful. Great great levine. Of course it charges on chatham. Oh and it's one of those. I think great little products that was ignored for too long by its parent company so the reynaud necessitates bitchy alliance is taking. The philosophy of h. One of those brands are going to be. The leader for certain vehicles and the other brands will follow. We'll have sista vehicles if you like. So they'll be more based on these new platforms. They sent a token about okay. Let's move on. Vw's vulcan ceo not the brand vw hubbub. He's intimidated spy apple. Even though the tech company has an electric car on the way according to cnn votes wagner is aiming to be dominance in the ev field the company so two hundred and thirty one thousand six hundred eighty in twenty twenty according to figures published back in january by vw. Although that's less than half the number of tesla tesla did you nearest dammit. Plus minus a couple down the back of the cipher. Half a million in two thousand nine hundred twenty guidance is attested. Guidance is fifty percent growth which is low balling and everyone knows as well. And it's really weird thing to do because in tunnel targets about a million cars this year. For tesla so vw are playing catch up but they had two hundred and fourteen percent increase on the previous year. So the getting that now. This was a german publication that Interviewed him and he said and i quote the car. Industry is not a typical tech sector. That you could take over at a single stroke. Apple will not manage that's overnight and quotes very true them and they went to overnight butts. I wouldn't want to go up against apple because they any tend to do something when they are ready to really go for it and when they do you know that they are serious. I still come walk out what we're gonna do with. Why would apple mike. Why would apple get into cars which are full of boxes an oil and entire wear out and things and windscreen wipers that get replaced apple devices so slick and full gloss and and actually get replaced every couple of years. Why get into cost. It just seems. I can't get my head around it i can. I can understand apple providing the software to give you the apple experience and the sense of sweet so the cameras the right of the line and how that whole an and the autonomy but they on gonna. I can't see apple making a car. it's just like come making. It's just a business as well just goes against the much apple stands for and i you know an apple car is essentially branded apple. But made by you know because they didn't make their own phones fox and others make the actual devices. That would make more sense so that i can walk up to the apple car with my watch. My phone unlocks like in. I can carry on the conversation on the cole..
