"For flu, chickenpox, smallpox, hepatitis, measles, mumps and rubella, polio, tetanus and everything else Americans have been taking for decades. Acting FDA commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock as the first FDA approved Covid 19 vaccine. The public can be confident that this vaccine meets the FDA is gold standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality that we require for an approved product. President Biden says he hopes full approval will encourage employers to enact vaccine mandates. I'm calling on more country More companies, I should say in the private sector. To step up the vaccine requirements. That will reach millions more people more than 200 million doses of fighters. Coronavirus vaccine have already been administered in the United States, but that was under an emergency use authorization granted in December. When you go for full approval, you submit more data follow up data. You also do a lot of investigation of their manufacturing capabilities because it's one thing to say we have a safe drug. It's another thing to say we can make millions of doses of it. Dr. Jerome Adams was the 20th, surgeon general of the United States, appointed by President Trump. The FDA has taken its time looked at all the data seen good follow up after the EU way was issued and that we can take this vaccine and recommend it to other people with confidence that it's going to help keep them alive. And that they benefit will far outweigh any risk. Yeah, so a lot of people have been saying they've been holding out. I'm not taking this is just emergency use. It's not fully approved. Maybe we see a new Russia vaccinations coming out of this. It could also give businesses and school systems and government entities like the military, more legal authority at least more more cover to mandate the shots. Exactly. So you really summed up the two big benefits about 13% of people, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, who haven't gotten the vaccine. They haven't gotten the vaccine because they still have concerns about safety and efficacy, and they mentioned lack of full FDA approval as one of those concerns, so I hope that some of those people out there We'll see. This will have confidence that the FDA, which is the best in the world doing this did their job and they'll go to vaccines dot gov and make an appointment but one of the bigger things and I've been saying this for a long time. And that it will give businesses and organizations the confidence to mandate vaccines. And we already have five childhood vaccines that are mandated. Many places mandate the flu shot every year. To protect their organizations. And now that this is actually approved, you've already seen the Pentagon come out and say they're going to mandate these vaccines. I think you'll see a sports teams. I think you'll see schools. I think you'll see other organizations that quite frankly want to stay open in the face of this Delta variant. Now feel that they can confidently mandate these vaccines. They're people who have been saying, Look, these shots were rushed and the counter argument rushed to the emergency use approval. Now the counter argument there is that no corners were cut. It was just red tape. Has a bureaucracy been bad with this stuff Have not that we don't want treatment to be safe, obviously. But did you see overkill that maybe gets tamped down a little bit going forward with this president? Well, One of the things that we always want to do is make sure no one is harmed. And so we have an incredibly high standard, the highest standard in the world in the U. S forgetting something over the finish line, but one of the things that quite frankly, President Trump Um, charged the agencies with dealing with clearing out a lot of the red tape. A lot of the bureaucracy that slowed availability of some of these drugs that other people around the world were getting years ahead of people in the United States. So What we hope here is that we've seen that we can safely go more quickly. If we move past all the red tape, and that's what you saw with these vaccines. I want people to know that as a matter of fact, most of us from a scientific point of view. Felt like the process still took too long because we had the data so you shouldn't feel that it was rushed, especially now with full approval. What? You should feel confident that the process works. And then hopefully this will make it easier from other drugs in the future to be available again. You saw that during the administration President Trump really pushed not for the Covid vaccine alone. But prior to that, Making sure that people could have the right to try certain medications that were hung up in the FDA profit and former President Trump. Now they were talking about him over the weekend. At this rally in Alabama, he Encouraged the crowd to get vaccinated. He says it works, although he respected their freedom not to and he got booed. Or at least the idea of getting vaccinated. Got boo. Now what could anyone including him say to get some of those supporters vaccinated? What do you say? As a former member of the administration? Well, that's a great question, and I think one of the things we have to do is first of all understand that there are some people out there who were in what I call the resistant category. They're in the never category and you're not going to convince them. And so what we need to do with not give oxygen to the arguments that the people who just are never going to be convinced are making out there What we need to do with really talk to the majority of the people out there, and this isn't Republican or Democrat. You've heard me out there getting quite frustrated at the fact that it's been framed along political lines. These are just Americans who have questions about something that's new. Something where the information quite frankly, if changing on a day to day basis now, especially in the face of the new delta variant, and what I say to those people live. Hey, I understand you've got questions, and that's actually normal. I encourage you to ask questions, but ask them of your doctor. Ask them of your health providers. Don't go to the Internet. Don't go to Twitter or Facebook or YouTube to get your answers. Go to.

"Center, a professor of infectious diseases and medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a regular contributor with us to ask the doctors, Dr Hammer Welcome back to the show. Thank you very much pleasure to be back. So I really want to kind of dig in Dr Hammer to what this means. So fighters been administered widely already in the U. S. Under emergency use authorization more than 200 million doses. What does this change mean? This change in status and how big of a deal is it? Uh, you know, I think honestly it in some ways, it's not that it's very important because there are a lot of people that want to be reassured that the FDA has gone through a full formal review process. But honestly, and that's that's really been happening since the beginning. You know the emergency use authorization. There was a very careful, detailed review of the face three clinical trial data. I'm showing how well the vaccine worked and safety And then since then we now have literally I think at least 200 million doses administered in the United States and then hundreds of millions more worldwide. So a lot of data have been accumulating on both the safety but also the the effectiveness of the vaccine. So, um, But this this is, you know, in real final official stamp of approval from the FDA, and I think that that would be reassuring to some people that that so uncomfortable with Its sort of concept of emergency use. Authorization. Yes. So why, though? What is it about making it from authorized for emergency used to officially approved? What is the threshold? And why should that make or? Or does it not matter, right? Why should that make people who have been reticent Because it was quickly developed and wasn't fully approved by the FDA. Why should it make them more comfortable? I mean, I think you know it means the FDA has gone through and very rigorous review of all available data from, you know, immune response to safety to efficacy. And and, and that probably includes data that have accumulated since the EU away was was originally issued last December. And I think that that that that knowledge that the FDA has done this really careful scrutiny of the vaccine may be reassuring to some. In reality. I've I think many of us have felt very comfortable with that, Um, since last year, and they Process That fighter went through, you know, within biotech to to have this approved was a standard series of steps that are that are done to approve a vaccine. It went very quickly, partly because there was an urgent public health need, but But in addition Because there's a lot of disease circulating their ability to show that it worked was accelerated because it was just it was just so many cases of covid 19 happening there was it was, it was faster to be able to demonstrate how well it worked. So I understand that you are a doctor and not a lawyer, And we have done pandemic law on this show in the past, But I do want to ask you to prognosticate a little bit. Now that Pfizer two dose vaccine is fully approved for people ages, 16 and up by the Food and Drug Administration. Do you think we will see more private and public employers moving to vaccine mandates? Will this shift that balance? Do you think Absolutely. I think that there are a number of organizations that have been sort of only the edge of making a decision to make this vaccine mandatory for their employees or for students and some organizations have we have moved ahead with that decision already, But others have. You know they're They're sort of internal officer general counsel their lawyers and said, Well, we Don't feel like we should really do this until it's fully approved by the FDA. So now that it is, I anticipate we're going to be hearing daily about different large organizations you know, both state and and then private corporations as well as schools, universities, colleges that haven't already made. That decision will be going towards mandatory vaccination. Now you are part of the decision making team at BU. You work there. W bur is licenses held by Boston University. So you and I are both subject to a vaccine requirement. I take it you are in support of vaccine mandates. And in this context, absolutely. I mean, actually, I mean, even for other diseases, something like you know measles, For example it it's it's you know, we require that for all incoming students at Boston University, many other universities do as well. I mean, that's a you know, extremely contagious disease. This case, we have a similar, uh, virus that can be readily spread from person to person that can cause severe disease and death and at least certain higher risk populations, but also even sometimes in younger, healthy people, And and this is the best available tool for control of spread, but also to to reduce the sort of negative impact it may have on an individual but also at the level of the public health system. I mean, looking at what's happening and parts of the South right now, if you know This useful and hustles running out of sufficient nursing staff to care for people. I mean, it's really a public health disaster almost and this will help mitigate that disaster. Shifting gears a little bit. Have you ever seen a vaccine of this magnitude go from development, which arguably was probably what January of 2020 when we know that at least some of the vaccines went under development to full FDA approval with this kind of speed. No, I mean, this is this is, you know definitely like warp speed for this to to go that this quickly, But I think it's it's partly we've the vaccine development has moved a lot faster in recent years because of improved really scientific capacity. And there are other vaccines that moved very quickly from phase one to phase two safer Zika virus in all within a period of 6 to 9 minds that that didn't go further, though, because that and that epidemic in the Western Hemisphere died down and essentially disappeared..

There is a question about the Pfizer vaccine, and that is this is a vaccine that has to be kept very cold. "Says the U. S government is buying another 200 million doses of the Fizer and Majorino vaccines, both of which requires special handling with the Fizer version, in particular, requiring extreme refrigeration. We welcome now someone in the middle of the so called cold chain in an industry he is J. McCarthy, U's CEO of Eros. Safe Global. So welcome. It's good to have you, Mr Ricard. Give us a sense of your understanding of that chain from production right through the distribution, where the weak links right now for vaccine Well, actually first have to say it's been a fantastic job working with, you know the vaccines 500 during the outstanding work and getting this out and speed they did. I think that there are there's a few unique challenges to this vaccine distribution. The first time being, the temperature is you mentioned and it's not that this industry hasn't been doing it for some time, but they haven't done it that well. In fact, billions of vaccines were lost last year due to temperature fluctuations. But I think they're doing it right this time. The minus 20 in the minus 70 is not unique to the industry. There are methods and techniques and packaging and logistics solutions that they can provide that. And so it's just unfamiliar to most of the public and asking the pharmacies and asking the stage to deal with these new challenges was the was the original hurdle. But I'm here to say that you know I'm working with all of them and it's very encouraging. We have figured it out. I think the quality is there. The speed is there. The efficiency may not be today. But I'm very encouraged with with President Biden's message the other day that he's investing in more sites or pharmacies, getting the product out to rural areas. S O so encouraged with with the progress so far do we have the equipment and or the products that we need in order to do we need to do? Is there a bottle like there that we need to manufacture? I don't know. Maura Special refrigerators orm or of these containers that contained dry eyes. Actually, I don't think so. The capacity is is being built, and most of it exists to handle most of this. I didn't I just think it's a coordination issue. I do think that with more sites they can handle more product. Um, the packaging and logistics solutions that exist today a very efficiently and effectively deliver the vaccines whether it defies or or maternal to the pharmacies in vaccination site. And you know, in original challenge was, how did we do last mile? How do we get it out of the pharmacies and again With the help of the industry? The farms has now have solutions where they can hit the street. Go on these milk runs or even get in a car and drive 68 10 hours and deliver vaccine to the road grown areas. So take us behind the scenes if you would in the private public sort of interface. What extent is the federal government? Really calling the shots? State government showing shots? Private industry Really partnering who really is in charge of this point is that clear? Um, everybody sort of working on their own solutions. Um, As you know, Fizer took more of a direct approach, which could be seen as less risky to go straight to distribution sites. Madonna went through McKesson, which is obviously a nice choice. McKesson being very established organization. More handoffs more distributed, so I don't know which one's better. They're both seem to be working. But there is a little bit of confusion when you get down to the state in the county level versus you know the pharmacy's on by federal government level But s O more coordination would be nice. I think that will help accelerate the distribution of accidents. Have you seen much change or shift so far with the bite administration coming up, But I've only been there a few days, but but they're certainly having a lot of press conferences to talking about seem to have a plan. I haven't seen it yet. I like what I'm hearing, but I haven't seen anything personally on on the street that so if you were advising them if you were advising the White House right now and saying, OK, if you really want to get this done the way you say you do. This is the thing you gotta focus on first and foremost, what would it be? Think having more sites for the product to be delivered to. I think that would be number one and coordinating between the sites. Like I said the pharmacies. They're already doing it. Some of the states are doing Pretty good job summer still trying to figure it out. So laying out a road map of what's working best best practices. And again, I'm going to the farms. He's Aziz is leading the charge as far as getting it into patients are quickly. What about what about international air? The things we can learn from things going to being done overseas or vice versa, that we can help other countries? I think we're leading the world in our in our efforts to vaccinate. I think the numbers prove it. Europe is just getting started. Japan will be launching in a few weeks on that looks promising again, basically because they're following the U. S model. Fasting gives a sense of just briefly here at the end of what you're how your company fits into this chain. We provide solutions custom for farmers needs and so this is no different Whether it's developing a solution. That'll.

"Coma. 24 7 News Center. The federal government is bringing in more Corona virus vaccine doses to help reach President Biden's goal. The administration's announced moments ago plans to order an extra 200 million total doses from both Fizer and Madeira. Increasing total orders by 50%. The White House would also ramp up state distribution of the vaccine to roughly 10 million doses per week. For the time being. That's up from something like 8.4 doses, and the world has seen over 100 Million Corona virus cases as of today, about a quarter of which are from the United States. The president with a new goal when it comes to getting vaccinated Americans on the Rolls ABC, Stephanie Ramos reports. I think we may be able to get that to 1.5 million a day rather than one million today is gonna be a logistical Challenge that exceeds anything we've ever tried in this country, but I think we can do that. I feel confident that My summer. We're gonna be well on our way to heading toward herd immunity. The president's confident but cautious warning The death toll could top 660,000 before we start turning the corner. We're still going to be talking about this. In the summer. We're still going to be dealing with this issue. In the early fall the race to vaccinate the world as pressing as ever concerns escalating as more variants of the virus reported in the U. The company's saying experiments show it protects against the UK variant, but that it provoked a weaker response against the South African variant and is studying a couple new options, including a possible booster shot. We need to keep watching it and testing against it and making sure until we've got it beaten back that we're planning ahead and we're being careful. On Monday, U. S pharmaceutical company Merck announced its ending development of two potential vaccines, saying while both looked safe in clinical trials, immune responses were low. But scientists across the globe are trying to get as many that Sean's approved as possible. According to the World Health Organization. There are more than 60 vaccines around the world currently in human trials, 11 of them in the final testing stages and nearly 200. Others are in pre clinical development. But overnight, Dr Anthony Fauci is saying the disproportionate available doses across the country are of great concern to him. There was some areas of the country with his vaccine. Lying around, and it's not going into people's arms. I just got off the phone with the city and a stage in which they have so many more people lined up. Want to get vaccinated and they don't have vaccine. So that kind of dichotomy and disparity eyes something that we really need to address. Find out how to fix it and fix it.
