"200 clients" Discussed on BiggerPockets Real Estate Podcast

"In today's episode, I am so excited that people are going to have a path painted for them that when you hear us say you can not pay taxes as a real estate investor or an investor of any type, this is exactly what you're doing in order to make that happen. It will sort of come alive as if you're living 400 years ago and you were looking at it everywhere that you turned. I think it's also interesting that you should get more education. You understand what you kind of change your mind on what's risking what isn't. For example, I went from years ago I went to work as the in-house tax adviser for fortune 1000 company. And my very first task was to lay off half of my department. We're doing a company-wide laugh and I'm going so let me get this straight. If you're an employee, you have one customer. And you are at risk, even if you do a good job. And then I look at, well, what if I start my own firm? Okay, let's say I have 200 clients. Well, if one client fires me, so, okay, but I still have underneath my clients. And I just go get another client. But if I only had one client, think about this, if you went to a bank, your business owner, you went to a bank, and you had a single client, would they lend to you? Probably not. Probably not. The lentil, if you're an employee, but not if you have a single customer as a business owner, which is really interesting. It's just a different assessment risk. Yeah, that's a very good point. I also think about if you really wanted to decrease your risk in the world in general, you would build as many skills as you could. You don't know what's going to happen. What if our power grid goes out? That's when you're going to find out who has survival skills and who doesn't. And the same happens in the workforce in a capitalistic country. The more skills you have, the less you worry about losing that job. And in my mind, the risk I see in the person who just shows up and does the same thing every single freaking day for 30 years is they stop building new skills. And they become dependent on that employer. And maybe even that specific company, not just that industry that they work in versus someone like you that has several different businesses that is an investor and a business owner. You are forced to build skills all the time. And so you don't live in fear of change. You're not worried about if the tax code changes or the economy changes. We frequently say here. If we have a recession, that's horrible for the most of the country, but we're going to be good. We will know how to adapt and take advantage. Another reason I just want to encourage everybody to really listen intently to this show is to understand this will help you build skills, which will ultimately reduce.

Because those firms even though they may have the big brand name on the mantle behind them were on the outside of the building. It's impossible to do any planning with that type of structure. It just simply is. We just expanded were undergoing a renovation. Right now we have over 1000 clients. We have 33 employees. "Turn your dog's life around and make him or her I happy camper either, right, boy? Oh, he said, call pig joy right now. 800 to 6 to 39 Oh, 3 800 to 6 to 39 Oh, 3 800 to 6 to 39 Oh, three. That's 800 to 6 to 39 Oh, three. It's firing form and connecting a community of entrepreneurs. This is business rock stars. I paddle Brian. Welcome to the show. Let's check in with Mark lack. We're here you inspire, inform and connect a community of entrepreneurs. I'm mark lack in. This is business rock stars. My guest today is Fabian Guy Halter. He's the founder of opinion It's gonna have on the show, brother. Thanks for having me personal opinion. Tell us what I mean. I know you originally were like, Well, there's a meaning to the words. The first tell us what's the meaning of the word and then tell us about your company and what you do. Yes, sir. The meaning of the word is in a different languages in French, Latin and Polynesian. It means putting in the seat setting the com pass and seeing something through, so it was really cool that we actually created award in a way created a morph that word into our process. So what we do is we meet with a start ups and entrepreneurs. And we help them to turn into a brand quickly, which seems kind of silly because when you think brand do you think about Fortune five hundred's and Gucci logos and things like that, But in reality brand is all about soul. It's all about entering the big question. Why which even I chatted about before and we helped them get there. We helped them get there through creating creating a great story creating Deeper, meaning everyone really has it in them is an entrepreneur but deeper meaning that resonates with the audience, creating a name, creating another startup, name, Real brand name on then creating a brand identity and seeing them through, so it sounds like a long process, But it's usually just about a month. Well, okay, so you guys have a business getting started really established their brand. The future in a month. That's right the problem and you nailed it before the future, So we work with cereal and serious entrepreneurs, right both of them The cereal once a really, they've been around her staff were important and serious and preneurs who say Look, this is going to be the next couple of years of my life. They know that this is a brand. I'm willing to hire experts. Helped create, because I know that I'm gonna take this thing for a serious entrepreneur goes. This is a long term business. So I do have a brand from day one that says that recently, right? That's absolutely right. So what compelled you to start your business? You know for me personally, I just wanted to follow in the footsteps of the other consultants, coach's best selling authors, international speakers and in full marketers online because I was learning so much from them that it came a point in my life where I was like I want to do this. You know you're gonna watch Michael Jordan. See, start playing basketball in you like I want to become that Z kind of my journey of how I was like, Wow, I'm compelled to not only want to learn from these people that changed my life in an impact in the world. I now want to do that for you. What compelled you to want to start this type of business figure? It was a little more traditional in the beginning, So I ran for about 12 13 years I ran a traditional graphic design and branding it to see Which was so much fun and hell at the same time, Like most of the time, your first business end up being when it grows again. Yeah, and I got into debt business because I studied graphic design, and I was always into graphic design and creating creating logos and creating brands and s. I worked through my business. I realized that it is not just about creating, you know beautiful images for brands, which, of course, That's a lot, right? Yeah, Yeah, We're all attracted to something that the brand represent. But it's so it's so much deeper. And so as I breathed a sigh grew the business and a sigh myself as a person is entrepreneur grew. I wanted to go back and really on Lee work with startups and younger companies. Maybe it's also to drive that as you as you run a company for 10 20 years you realized that you need another infusion and something needs to change. You know, at some point and S O. That's how that's how it worked out for me so Eventually you got to a place where you were, like, Look, I need to be able to grab this baby by the rains and no longer be growing somebody else's asset. But I want to take control of my own destiny and kind of do what you're already doing. But in your own sense with your own company, with all full decision making and everything like that. Is that what Well, it's always been my cos I've been running it for a long time, okay? And then at some point, which was really suicide when you think about it, and I'm sure a lot of fans of the nurse unseals listening to that well, so like what What was he doing? I wanted Tol wanted to change the course of the company. So I had about 10 12 employees and I wanted to make it a consultancy. I wanted to have one or two employees. I wanted to do highly strategic work instead of a lot of output work, a lot of production work, so I I believe that's when I changed the name from Guy holding company into opinion. That's when I changed my clients. We had amazing fortune 500 kinds, and I just brought them literally an email saying here three agencies in Los Angeles that I can recommend you working with and I mean, we had retained 2030 $40,000 containers from cos We just said goodbye. Goodbye, Which was which was P suicidal in hindsight, but it actually worked really, really well. So I had to change my lifestyle and to make sure that everything is you know, safe and foolproof and it came. It came Around amazingly so interesting Welfare Fabian Guy Halter is the founder of opinion. He's my guest. Right now. I'm marked lack of business rock stars were here to inspire, inform and connect a community of entrepreneurs again. Fabian Guy holder was just sharing with me something incredible and how you ended up just kind of sending an email Get ready from your fortune 500 clients that had you guys on some pretty big retainers, and you shifted Maurin to the consultancy Agency model, But you said it actually paid off. Ultimately made you look back later and say, even though we lost our foot 200 clients by choice didn't have actually being one of the best decisions. I'm curious. How did you see that shift happen? Well, most importantly, I think for any financial manure and CEO is they have to be happy, right? You have to be happy and what to do on I realized after 12 years of doing pretty much the same, and we just got bigger clients and we just grew There was not really much changing in my own. You know, in my own behavioral pattern, right? It was always the same. It's just suit. My liberation was to suddenly say, OK, I have no clients. I have a couple of employees. They're just finishing up some work and that's pretty much it and now I can completely restart. I can choose my clients. I could see no to project which is so liberating, saying no to all of the projects that are not perfect fit and then the ones that are You just celebrate them and you create big strategy. And you really bond with what they're about. And I love having clients come in and out quickly, so nothing. I don't like them, but I love you. I have turned over on its super high. Creative, right. Here's a start up the dust eggs. How can we make you into a brand? You've got 30 days. Let's go there. You always creative. Did you always want to be alone? Yeah. Yeah, So that's always And yeah, I've always been into pinot real. I always run a company and it was just like exactly the beginning, though. Tell me When when was the time? He's not? We're not born entrepreneurs. Meaning we're not born with a company s. So you made no right. There's one other thing, like Take me back to before. You actually were an entrepreneur. What was the spark that made you realize? Like, Hey, I'm in high school and college dropout. Whatever I tell my story, Yeah. When did that shift happened? When was the light bulb moment? Well, I think it all happens when you for the first time realize you just made Boatload of money, which might have bean as a high school student. I don't know if 1000 bucks in 2000 bucks, right candy bars, but once he actually do to them once you realized you could do that, And for me, it was, you know, Throwing, throwing a big event you know for for.

Fabian Guy Halter 1000 bucks Los Angeles one 30 days Brian 2000 bucks Mark lack Michael Jordan Gucci 10 20 years Lee two employees Fabian Guy today three agencies 200 clients $40,000 both about 12 13 years
