"The high 63 you're waking up to in our nation's capital right now. Glad you're in with us this early morning. It's 445. I'm Dean Lane. This is WTOP News. A nearly 20 year old. A nearly 20 year old financial trends snapped in the first quarter of this year from 2003 to 2022 credit card balances fell from the fourth quarter of each year to the first quarter of the year. next That was not the case apparently this time around. Credit card rates stayed flat from the 2022 area to 2023. A record high 986 billion bucks. This morning bank rate senior industry analyst Ted Rossman talks details. Related to that of course would be higher interest rates which of course is related because the Fed's raising rates to fight inflation but for the past year or so we've been dealing with both. We're talking about record high card credit balances. Record high interest rates the average there for credit cards is about 20 point four percent so unfortunately it's difficult for people. Can we talk about what we can do now or what we should be doing? I mean you can't stop spending I guess you could cut back a little bit. Yep some people are doing that especially physical on goods it's interesting how services spending things like travel and dining and concerts that continues to surge but people are pulling back a bit on things like furniture and electronics and home activations. My top tip for credit card debt payoff is to get a zero percent balance transfer credit card. These offers last as long as 21 months you move your existing high -cost credit card debt to one of these new cards take advantage of that promo. I would say don't add any new purchases just divide what you owe by the number of months in your zero percent term. Try to stick to level that payment plan that could save you a lot of money in interest charges. As somebody that's looking at this very much more closely than most of us do are we down a bad path? I do worry that credit card debt plateaued in the first quarter just because normally as you said that's when it falls and then it rises a bit in the second and third quarters and then really spikes in the fourth quarter around the holidays. We should point out though that roughly half of credit card holders, actually slightly more than half, 54%, pay their bills in full every month. So in some respects we should take some of this with a grain of salt. I mean some of it people are paying off right away. They're getting rewards. This is just reflecting economic activity and population growth and the fact that people are using more cards and less cash. It's the other 46 % that we worry about. That's where you can get trapped in an expensive debt cycle. It's just easy to get into credit than talking with our Dimitri Soto. Without stories we're following for you this morning on WTLP.
