Senate votes to keep 2001 authorization for war on terror
"The Senate has voted overwhelmingly to continue congressional authorization for the use of military force in the global fight against terror and Ben Thomas with the latest. Senators voted 86 to 89 to reject the effort by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul to repeal the 2001 measure. It gave president George W. Bush brought authority for the invasion of Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism. It came up in a debate over a separate repeal of two authorizations of military force in Iraq. There is brought bipartisan support to withdraw the congressional approval granted in 1991 and 2002 for military strikes against Saddam Hussein's regime. Those authorizations are rarely used and focused just on Iraq. Ben Thomas, Washington

Robyn Pfaffman: Tyre Nichols Video May Be 'Worse Than Rodney King'
"Robin, it's our understanding and you and I have covered crime new year's for years and you've covered some of the most high profile criminal cases in America. I have not seen a case like this where even in the aftermath, the immediate aftermath back on January 7th, where they would not even release the incident report. So we have no idea what precipitated the traffic stop. We have no idea what the encounter was. As a matter of fact, we were all led to believe by police in the early days of this that the guy fled from police and said he was suffering, he was having a problem breathing. Well, now it turns out, according to our sources, that that video is going to show three full minutes. Of this man literally being beaten to death at the hands, the literal hands of those police officers. Todd, it's outrageous. And again, I defer to Memphis police chief CJ Davis. In this interview that she did with CNN, she was very measured in her words, but she was very honest. And she said that the taste is really bad. She was outraged. And the other quote that she said was, you will see acts that defy humanity and that the video in her words is alarming. And I'm going to defer here to the police chief because I haven't seen the video, but I'm going to trust her. And if she says that it's worse than the 1991 beating of Rodney King in Los Angeles, then Todd, we have to we should be going with that, I do not like videotape that's taken out of context. I was not just a snippet. I'd like to see the whole thing like you're saying, what led up to the original stop of the driver, how to see then get away, how do they encounter him a second time, what precipitates the beating and his mother, by the way, says that her son was quote beat like a pinata.

Hawaii man imprisoned for 1991 murder, rape released
"A Hawaii man imprisoned for more than 20 years on murder and rape charges has been ordered released. I'm Ben Thomas, with a closer look. It was one of Hawaii's most infamous murders. Christmas Eve 1991 on the big island, 23 year old Dana Ireland, a blond haired blue eyed visitor from Virginia, found barely alive in the bushes along a trail. Sexually assaulted and beaten, she died at hilo medical center. Three native Hawaiian men were convicted, Albert Ian Schweitzer, sentenced to 130 years in prison. He was the last of the three still in prison. The innocence project took up his case, presenting the court with new evidence, including DNA, which they argued showed he didn't commit the crimes. The judge ordered Schweitzer be released from his shackles immediately, prompting applause and hugs, Schweitzer told reporters he's grateful. I'm Ben Thomas

But there are many things I can tell you. First of all, I can say that we think the trial is going well. That we have an outstanding team of attorneys working on this case. "And I think this last rewatch kind of pushed it toward the good movie line of all time. 1987, 91. 91? 91. This age really well. I'm thinking our next movie that's 87. Now this movie edge really well. Sort of an X movie. No, but really the only moment that I literally had to take a step back and I was like, that was dumb. It's when he's chasing Ronald Reagan. He throws a dog out of me and turns the corner and there's a fucking pit bull in the air. Wolf wolf. That dog let him pick him up and just like, all right, we're gonna get this guy. Think about that chase for a minute. Starts with Patrick Swayze using and basically a guy in a Ronald Reagan mask using a gas station nozzle. Most badass thing. And then they go through a Los Angeles neighborhood. We're talking running through waiting pools, people's kitchens, throwing dogs. I mean, this is like the most all the way down to the drainage. Yeah. Over the top action scene. That's the next one. Literally over the top. Yeah. It's like this is just crazy. I mean, it's just like, what can we throw in here next? And I just kept thinking about all the cool stunts and how they always had to kind of pull back and not show faces because it's obviously not Keanu Reeves surfing and Patrick Swayze surfing. Some scenes are. And that is them skydiving. They actually started. Well, that was the thing. I was like, how many times did it take them to film all these skydiving scenes? Because there's so many long shots. I don't know if you guys would be on skydiving. It takes not that much time before you have to pull a shoot. Trev has. It's been like 6 months for me. Interesting to note, the effects of gravity have a whole different pull on me. I fall faster than gravity allows. And 53 jumps, scientists can't explain it. I won't do anymore. It won't let me. Yeah. You're not going to be a Guinea pig anymore for him. No. Elon Musk is gone. Bonkers are for trek. 32 feet per second per second? No. How much is Jeff Bezos bidding for you these days? I'm getting a cameo in rings of power. That's about it. Are you the right? I'm a troll. I was in episode one. I was the ice troll. I got to growl. He looked good. That's good. No, the amount of time that they were in the air before they had to pull a shoot was like 5 minutes too long. So long. The guy that jumped from the Red Bull rocket. Yeah. I was just like, what are they going to pull their shit? Yeah. You're going to pull their shoe. Yeah. Just take forever. But the stunts in this movie are awesome. They are. The flamethrower scene, most badass. If I could just have one scene on repeat, like if I could have a video of a wallpaper. It would just find me. Ronald Reagan just flame throwing a car. That's a good metaphor for him as a politician. That works really well.

"He's like, we never kill anybody. We are always out in 60 seconds or 90 seconds, whatever it was. They're gone in 60 seconds. Yeah. Oh, good call. They never hit the vault. And then the one time at the end, when they're like, you know what? Fuck it, this is gonna be our big one. They're a journaling junkies, so they always want to push the envelope, because like, fuck it, we'll go, and then that's what ends up, I guess that was Bodhi's brother, his actual brother, which I didn't know throughout the entire movie. I'm like, oh, okay. Well, now this makes sense that he's fucking crazy. And that he's not going to actually visit violence upon Tyler. He's like, telling this other guy to do it. He's like, I can't do it. I have to tell this guy or mention it to him. To cop out. But it made sense to me that like, all right, they're trying to still keep him somewhat good. Somewhat to his love to hate. And honorable villain. And I loved it. And at the end too, I was like, oh, I already knew they had established it. I'm like, fuck, he's gonna go find him in Australia because he's made that point, mentioned that. I'm like a 100%. And I'm like, oh. And I'm like, God, you can't, you gotta let him try that one last wave. Let him do that last wave, and then you arrest him. But when he threw his sequel, I wanted to see Keanu Reeves go off to do your assassin the furious. Is there like a reboot? Isn't there a point where we don't talk about that? I wanted to see him go, he got the adrenaline junkie bug. See him go do other crazy adrenaline shit. But also take people down. Yeah. Maybe he goes undercover. Maybe he gets even deeper and like it's more dangerous and more on the edge. The FBI director getting mad at him. He's like, you're too radical for the FBI. What's that guy's name? We scrubs. John mcginley is his name. John mcginley. It's Perry Cox. Whatever bell's beach, how faked those Austrian accents sound to you guys. Sounds pretty good. We'll get him in whenever he comes back. I think my accident. Didn't you? Have something you want to say about work child? Oh, I just fucking love it. That's a great question. Yeah, I just love this. Because it's a love bodie, it's just like this is great. You feel like, man, he's got the right idea. He's Robin banks. Maybe I should rob some banks. He's doing it for the right reason. I love it. But that one scene where he's coming in and he bails out Johnny Utah, but I don't know why I love it. He was just like, back out for a child. And this is so definitive and he was like, you know, it's like, he's with me. And I just love that scene. That's all I had to say about that. Was that drunk? Maybe. I kept thinking that when he was like, you pull the shoe, you pull it. Are they going to kiss? Yeah. The shoot's a metaphor. Yeah. Hey, Sean. Hey. Hey, baby. You know who shot first? Greedo. Johnny, Utah. I do. No, I fucking love this one shot first. I think I always underestimate how good this movie is because in my mind, it kind of holds place like that middle ground between good movies, bad movies.

But he says I could eat the ass and have a dead rhino. But him and his fucking meatball sandwiches, man. Had to have two. Two. Also, yeah, he could really watch the bank better. I'm just saying, he got back and anyway. It's like any reading like the paper or something. He's reading comics. What's going on? Oh God. It's like y'all are on a stakeout. You don't get to read marmaduke. But yeah, I was getting Paul Walker vibes the whole time while Keanu is like, yeah, okay. I'll be the surfer guy on point. To the dude from office space and also what's grubs? The other doctor. Oh, golly. Something Riley and Sean, what do you think? Oh, that's Sean. Sean is here. Sean's not plugged in. His ass is edible. There you go. If you do that, you're facing a guacamole after that. I love guacamole. You're going to look like The Incredible Hulk. It's like the old one that's just like painted green. What was I talking about? David, I was about to make a point. I was zoned out. The guy from the guy from scrubs and then off to space. The raid, you got to see girl young Tom sizemore. I've been fucking, but what happened in there totally made sense. They had the ex presidents. I got this movie, and I watched heat later in life as well. I had always heard good things about the movie heat. So when I watched heat, I was wondering why they weren't wearing president masks in that. And when I saw this, I'm like, oh shit, okay. I was getting them mixed up. What lasted they were in heat? I don't think they in the first robbery they wear hockey mass. Second one they do ski masks. And the bank robbery. 'cause they all pull them down for the exact same time. I like the synchronized or whatever. So purely winter sports. Yes, exactly. But I love the ex presidents and I'm like, I try to equate everything with comic books and I'm like, this would be an excellent gang in a Batman movie or Batman comic book. Good old tricky dick, good old Reagan, just bullshit. But everything that Bodhi did, Patrick Swayze, I fucking loved him. He had his cool chill surf philosophy.

"It's like mom. Hey, Utah. Give me two. You don't make it too. I'm just like, wait, what? Yeah, because you got to see the titties this time. You want me to serve? Wow. This movie is just absolutely fucking phenomenal. And this rule should just be this maybe in my top ten, 15, wouldn't you break it down? Because there's movies I always forget about. And this is I think one that I forget about. And I don't know if it's just because it's just a film that hits me because when I was young, it was like a film I shouldn't have watched. But the more and more and more I watched it, I'm like, damn, man, if I saw this in theaters, I might clap. I'm like clapping this film and be like, you know what? Broad Brody bodie. Cody went out the way he was supposed to go out with him. He went out. Yeah. Like he said, it's not a sin that die doing what you love. Yeah. And then killing this fades away. He's not coming back. It's not coming back. It's almost like a western, you know, it's almost like knowing what you know that the chain, he's going to die. Western. Like water world but better. Yeah. Exactly. So I love this film. I loved it when Paul Walker met with DOM toretto and then was like to get in with these guys. I'm going to have to drive the fastest car ever. And then he went to all the racetracks and was like, I almost heard you, bro I almost had you man. And then dawn was like, you never had your car. And then got in good with him. God, I love all you guys on. Hanging out. Let's hang out some more. And let's go steal some DVD players off the back of trucks and then drink coronas in the backyard. Anyway, bang your sister. The sister, right? I was watching point break. This was my first time ever watching point break. I had never seen it before. I was like, oh yeah. Look at the fuck out of here. You loser. I had never seen it. And so I was watching it, and I was like, I've seen this movie before. And it was called fast and the furious. I was like, wait a minute. Fast and the furious stole everything from this. Yeah. So I was like, oh my God, I got, I'm getting all the similarities. All right, I get it. We're turned his head. Yeah, it's a California piano or something to figure California one for point break. It's one of the definitive California. This is very much surfing. Welcome to The O.C. bitch, exactly. So we're doing a California Pinot and then a for point record we're going to do an organ one because it starts off in Oregon. So driving down to California with his rig. With pictures of his son hanging over work. Yeah, when you're just working your wrist out, nonstop. You got spare time. You saw the veins popping in that thing. Yeah. Long drives. Old hockey. So point break came out July 12th, 1991. 31 years ago. 91, 91. $24 million budget grows to $83 million. Over three times budget. So that's a good sign. 25 million produce that? Directed McCaffrey Bigelow. And executive produced by her then husband James Cameron. Kathryn below would later win the academy war for directing the hurt locker. Believe she was the first female to win best director. No shit. Interesting. Yeah. So this film focuses on Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves. He was a former Ohio State quarterback turned FBI stud. And part of his rookie campaign is to investigate his string of burglaries in LA by a gang who dresses up like ex presidents. So he gets assigned a partner, Angela Pappas, played by Gary Busey. Yeah. Pappas believes that ex presidents are surfers as their bank robbing patterns match where all the great waves are.

I remember the day in 1991 when the hard line Russian generals tried to seize power from Gorbachev to arrest him or kill him and reimpose communism and start the Cold War up again. And I'll never forget because up until 1990 or so. I had always assumed I knew how I was going to die. And how we're all going to die in a nuclear war. I was a 100% sure that because I lived in New York, you know, it was a prime target. I was going to die in a nuclear war and so was everybody else I knew. Nobody was going to have grandchildren. No one is going to be remembered. Nobody's going to have a heritage. Nobody's home was going to exist. After he was dead, behind us, we would leave nothing, but an ash heap. I had always assumed growing up in the Cold War. That's how I would leave this world. I would have nightmares about our woken up multiple times after seeing my body get hit by a blast wave or Brady killed by radiation. That started to go away. Subtle inexorable way. Thanks to Gorbachev's reforms in Russia where he was trying to impose what he thought was socialism with the human face. He was mistaken. That doesn't exist. That is impossible.

Dinesh Examines Leftist Arguments of the GOP 'Undermining Democracy'
"One of the consistent themes of the left these days. Is to attack conservatives and attack Republicans for somehow undermining democracy. There are passing voter suppression laws that undermine democracy. They're engaged in partisan gerrymandering that undermines democracy. They want to uphold the filibuster, which is a restriction on democracy. And there's an interesting article I want to discuss that is in The New Yorker by Louis menand. Believe in hands of smart guy, I've actually crossed swords with him a few times before. He was one of the early intelligent critics of illiberal education, my very first book out in 1991. And I think at that time Anand was at NYU, he subsequently been at Harvard. He might still be at Harvard, but in any event, he's got this essay in The New Yorker called American democracy was never designed to be democratic. And I was reading the article and kind of laughing through it because he's right. Now, let's see what menand is trying to say because he's trying to give a left wing message to the left. But the message happens to be one that we can heartily endorse even though we're coming from the opposite end of the political spectrum. Basically what men and is saying to the left is listen, you keep complaining that the right is undemocratic. And you're acting as though we have a pure democratic system in this country, America is a kind of democracy across the board and the right is somehow acting in a sort of way that subverts that. And manan goes but America's never been a democracy. The founders weren't believers in pure democracy. America has democratic elements, but it also has Republican elements and quite frankly it has very clearly undemocratic elements by which I mean elements designed explicitly and deliberately to cut against democracy.

"Some dads bringing their kids to AW matches when they know stings there. Because sting was their guy. And now they're taking their son to see the dad's former favorite. Her longtime favorite. It's just a different feel. It's a different emotional feel. And staying plays that up as he exactly as he should. You know, he's very fan friendly and he's not going to do anything in a ring that he can't execute to a non embarrassing level. Not going to happen. In hindsight, I guess things probably the last survivor from the NWA to WCW transition, as you know it. As far as an in ring guy, he's got to be one of them. I'm in flares out. Luger's out. Feels like he's one of the last big names. You're right, yeah. Or somebody we're forgetting, but nonetheless, he's sort of the most prominent last name of that era. And but he's just pretty much an extraordinary hormone. Think about it. All the hardships that he went through that we discussed. And the injury, the injury, for example, the booking changes. The book and philosophy changes. And here's just like, I'm sure he felt like a pawn in a chess game. And it could have been much fun for him. But he endured and forgot to come on the scene Conrad in 90 one. And how do you rank matches and ready to match this on television that year? Pretty damn good. I was given off 5 stars at WCW performances. Right? No, sir. It probably deservingly. We weren't doing a lot to write home about. No. But staying still held his head up and he performed and he made the matches. He was in better. I thought. So he's been a very much sting has been a great gift. To our business, and when Tony Khan signed him out there wasn't a sign for a one off or too often. Get to a pay per view trying to pop a number. All of a sudden, he's a semi regular. He's been booked right. He's not overused, overexposed, and he's not put into predicaments that he can not execute. And here's another thing. I'll get Tony Khan on a credit because that's what asks her to do. And I'm asking, sir, so I'm sure he's deeply involved in his own creative. Deeply involved. And the other guy that that's helping over the long haul is Darby allin. Those dark and stinger interlock the TV and I'm sure those little meetings and we're going to do this. We're going to do that whatever. I'd like to try this. What do you think of this idea? But beautiful for Darby. And he eats it up. He's a student of the game. So there's a lot of winds and stings that gender right now. And I'm just glad that, you know, for me, Sunday because when you get older, you don't know what's the Mars not guaranteed. We know that. So I don't know when we'll see this thing again on paper. I don't know what I'm going to see myself if you don't pay for me. At this stage of life, you just take a day at a time or a week at a time of TV show at a time. But I'm really excited about that. That's one of the measures is going to be pumped up. Because I believe I owe it to him to give him my absolute very, very best. I've known him since the miss out days. And I owe it to him to do that. Everybody involved owes it to him. Excalibur, Tony. She's recorded. I love that. So anyway, it'll be fun, Conrad, special show. Special show. You know, performers have egos. You know that? Oh, I've heard that. It's fact. All performers have egos. And the eagles allegiant to see Eddie Guerrero tell us about all that motherfucker. But they got that mentality. Why would you want to go on a show and not be the best on it? And so I think there's a lot of guys in this car. You think Ron Danielson and John moxie don't want to have the best match on the show? Of course. But all those top guys like that, they want to walk away. There's enamored by melts of star ratings. Does anybody else read? Admit that in public, but they are. And the match of the night or whatever. The MOT 8 match of the year, what are they? Let's see it. I need a young kid to hang around me and deal with these initials. Well, you know what three of them are. JR's baby Hugh dot com is where you need to go. Yeah, baby. Whether you live in Florida, Alabama or Timbuktu, it's grilling season, baby. And JR's all purpose seasoning makes everything taste better. And of course he's got main event mustard and chipotle ketchup and he's got the sauce and man, you got something for everybody over there on the side, you know? We try. We sure try. As you would say, there's a lot to unpack here. Yes, sir. I love these. I get pictures on social on Twitter at JRS DBQ. Ways that people use our product. And interesting, you know, we all got mixed scrambled eggs as you mix self some scrambled eggs. Yes, sir. Time to time. Well, we all got, you know, I'll put chaise in it, I'll put a little red pepper flakes, you know, we all got a little quirks that we use in our eggs. Some people put a little bit of milk, a little or a little bit of cream, a little bit of butter. Always a good thing. Well, this guy showed me a picture of him a cooking with a scrambled eggs, and the primary seasoning was JR's all purpose season. A scrambled eggs, and it.

"I was thinking, I was glad I was wearing dark pants that day because I think I pissed myself. Horrible. Awesome. How's it play out? What's there? What can we get out of this thing? It's so limited. So gimmicky. But, you know, there was a time there. And we've talked about this because I was in a position to find no more of a lot of guys. On this topic, is that the insatiable quest to be as like WWE as they could be, this just solidifies that whole premise. You know, it was something that you're going to do a match in this nature with a crazy ass title or the loser gets the electrocuted. Electrocuted. I think that means death. It's like the absurdity of having a Texas death match. Ain't nobody died, no Texas death matches. Not yet. And hopefully they won't, but I don't know, looking at some of these names in this thing, you know, cashmere. Oh yeah, let's talk about him. It feels like that's a creative idea that they want to try. Let's give this guy the rub. Meltzer would say the TV main event sarcasm Abdullah take on sting and eating, and this match was completely screwed up because here in our eating was supposed to get pinned and laid out. And then the heels would double on sting, and calves would make the save. That's what was supposed to happen. But instead, kasma came out before the match was over, and started a run in until Nick Patrick stopped him in the whole gig was blown. And they're going to have to redo this match and kazmaier squash match because fans were chanting steroids at him. And they're going to re tape it on October 8th in Montgomery. The reason for this big push for kasma area is, and this isn't made up. Luger and kasmar are going to headline shows in early November, including the card of the forum in Los Angeles, and probably the show in San Jose as well. So I guess the idea is, let's use some of sting's popularity to help get Bill ready. Clearly, bill is not ready, but it feels like nobody should ever be so desperate for their next star. Having things like experience or in ring ability, that shouldn't get in the way. Look at this big jacked up strongman. People are going to love him. If we could just actually tell him how to do this. And a sad part about that story gone right, I don't disagree with anything he said. Is that Bill cashmere is a gas that was a nice guy. And what in his fault? No. That's what they asked of him. I think he's an Alabama guy. He is indeed great guy. I met him several times. Always to lie professional. You couldn't ask for a better representative of your company quite frankly. It's just that he got pushed to the action way too soon. He wasn't, he needed to be, he needed to be booked in an obscure way for a year or so. They need to wrestle, you know, three or four days a week. And I don't know that they don't want to make that kind of commitment. He might have I always found him to be a joy to be around. And you could do the vignette, you could do with him and all the accolades that he'd earned. Over time, could have been a great story to tell. And then finally, when he debuted, boom, you got something. I know who he is, know why he's here. I know how strong he is. I know I beat you very simply. People with a bear hug, you know, people with a headlock. And he looked great. Like I said, he was not going to be late. He's going to be on time. He's going to be prepared. And he's not going to embarrass you outside of ring and do anything stupid. But he just wasn't ready, man. It's just that the same common denominator that we've talked about time and time again. No patience. And boom. There you go. It's just bad management. You needed somebody in there that could say, okay, we're not doing any of these things anymore. This is out. That's out. The DQ's, all this other shit. Unless it's the right way of doing it, the right time. So then you do it when it meant something, not just because it's an easy way to create a lazy fucking finish. Meltzer would write that in this area, sting is going to be resigning for a three year deal. Sting signed to three year contract that takes him through February of 95, reportedly for 500 grand for the first year, 600 grand for the second year, and 700 grand for the third year, that's big money in wrestling in this era. Both Scott hall and diesel, Kevin Nash would refer to their contracts on their perceived future value and what the type of money they're trying to make. Their goals and aspirations were quote unquote, staying money. And this is what they're talking about. Jim in this era, this is an awful thing to say, but I think it is factual. They've got a few months without flair now, and they see fans are not happy businesses down, staying had a ton of leverage here in this deal. Did he not? They couldn't afford to have sting leave too. No, no. And you don't want Rick left. I'm not so sure how far apart, if any. Rick was compensation wise with sting and legs. You know, I don't know the right answer, but I researched that one time. I know I saw numbers. Legitimate numbers. And their monies are close, so that could not have been the only reason because the Rick left because Vince is not going to guarantee a weekly salary. In that era, you knew that right. Yeah. So WCW did..

"He had star appeal. Superstar appeal. And how can we best monetize that? Let's talk about Nikita for a minute. Do you think at this point, I mean, I don't mean to say the bloom is off the rose, but is it sort of done? He's going to stick around. I think he wrestles his last match in November of 92. But you go back to 85, 86. That was really the height. But here by 91, had the business just changed too much. Did he not evolve? I don't know whose fault it was. I guess I'm trying to get to is, is this one of the last meaningful things that we think we're going to get out in a key to? Probably. Yeah. And he may, and I don't know this to be this is a casual observation but it was there. I think maybe he didn't have the, I don't know. That's a vinegar that he once had. It seemed like he wasn't as intense as he once was. He was doing and he didn't change his game plan or strategy. Game planning. And you got evolved. You got to change a little bit. And he didn't seem to do that. It was like, well, that's the key thing again. You know, it's like the old days of our Anderson wrestling every Saturday on TV is. You know what's going to happen? So hey, look, I can watch our Anderson all day. Every day. Both of you have hit, but I think Nikita, maybe he lost his edge. Maybe just a flame wasn't burning his brightly as it once was. So later on that night, there's a pretty cool angle. Meltzer would write. Next was an angle where the winner of a fictitious thing lookalike contest, and this is where the head Kevin Sullivan's son Ben, with his face painted exactly like stain, came out, and of course they bring sting out to meet him, and then Nikita attacks sting during the segment with a chain and glared like he's going to attack Ben. Ben's mom, who is his mom in real life, hopped the guardrail to quote unquote protect her son. While Doug dillinger stepped in front of Nikita, and then Ben hovered over a fallen sting, it was a great angle. Kids and moms, man. That's money and wrestling almost every time, is it not? Yeah, it seems to me, you know, a lot of credit for that goes to Kevin Sullivan. Because I'm sure Kevin produced it, his son was involved in it. The wife was involved in it, and you know, Sully was really good at coming up with booking for heels. I really had a feel for it, you know? So that was one of the nicer things we did then. It was a great angle. As you said, I agree with you. And I agree with Meltzer. It was a great angle. And that helped Nikita Nikita needed more of that, Conrad, and even more nasty. You mean more nasty illustrations of your personality and who you are and we could do that on a regular basis. We would rebuild the star. And that's what we needed to do. We did the stars we had that were young enough to get it done. It needed to be rebuilt and reignited. And the other side of that, that conversation is a guys that were new, need to be given an opportunity. See if they get over. Maybe we get lucky. Struck lightning in a bottle or that cliche is. But the bottom line is that this is a Kevin Sullivan probably deserves a lot more credit to this for this angle than people realize. Isla boy was a natural, great versatility. Great segment. Great psych one. Yeah. Well, I remember one time Kevin couldn't find Ben. He came to TV. And he was missing for like our two. All in today's world, that would be a direct call to Chicago PD or, you know, SVU or somebody. But what had happened was the steiners are caught up with him. And they taped his body with adhesive tape from ankle to an eyes, he looked like a little mummy. And they were in a locker room, which had lockers. And that's where they found him. He looked like a little mummy, and he was a. He wanted to fight them both and done. It was just funny. He's a great kid. He's a grown man. I'm saying, now, obviously. I had heard from the year name, but he was a perfect little personality to do that. So we all know what's coming next. Ric Flair is going to leave WCW. You were there when all this happens. Clearly there's going to be a thousand meetings about this. Sting's name has to be at the center of every conversation about what do we do next, right? Yeah. Yeah. Well, there's so many all star. And as far as Rick was concerned, you think that was the first time that we heard was frustrated would like to leave, that was a normal course of business. That wasn't anything known a new topic to discuss. So but yeah, that's why I said before in this era, working at WCW wouldn't a lot of fun. Because it was the same worn out topics,.

"No, it doesn't. I was going to ask you a question. We're talking about. Staying in Luger, tag master steiners. Was a Jeff and east style match. What does that mean? What does that mean? You know what that means? I really don't. I'm not being facetious. I think he means hard hitting let's play into the crowd, you know. I mean, listen, there was the old school, you know, you stomp your foot and go, Rick, you go, you know, that was that thing. And then there was what they do in Japan, which is more of a, we're going to do some spectacles. And we're going to have some big power moves. We're not going to, it's going to be a little stiffer, a little snugger, a little less Gaga. I just get the idea that it's a little less Gaga, or as you like to say, a little more steak, a little less sizzle. That's the way I read it. Well, that's a good, I think that's a good answer. And I like that style. Yeah. But the first time I saw that style, I was a hell of a long way from Japan. Yes. You were in Louisiana and probably at the boys club watching guys beat the hell out of each other for real. Bingo, bingo, long way to Tokyo. Yeah. And but that's what they've held in. It still does hold in high regard, so just like you know, sometimes on the show here, I'll say roll Todd. I'm sure some of our friends across the pond had to Google that. They don't have a frame of reference for what that is. I get that. Why would they know about college football from Tuscaloosa? I get that. But I think Dave's Wheelhouse was all Japan at this time. Yeah. Yeah. Well, no, you gave me, that's a good that's a good definition of what it is. Less nonsense, more athleticism. Yeah. And people were, I don't want to say stiff, because stiff indicates they were dangerous. And we're hurting people. But they sure suck or snub. They focus more on realism. You in this era, in my opinion, because JR and I are your JR. Tony and I debate this all the time. Tony thinks, you go back and you're listening that your attitude era stuff and it's the best work of your career or any wrestling announcer ever. And ah, as much as I love the calls, still prefer listening to your stuff from like this era. Like 89 90 91 92, I love that you brought a sense of realism. You called it like an athletic competition. You talked about everybody's athletic background. I mean, I could buy into, I'm watching a pay per view fight. I'm not watching entertainment. And don't get me wrong, the calls you did with fence. My God, people are still talking about them. They're memes every week. If there's a big collision in the NFL or something or our big knockout, my God, we're getting a voice-over from JR from that era. So I get that that will certainly be bigger and more successful. Just me personally, I like the athletic approach to your call. And I think that's probably what Meltzer locked in the ring. I got it, yeah. It makes sense. Well, a little different. I wish I could, even today, sometimes you get that match that you can do all that in. Yeah. You know, I look at a match like Moxley and Brian Danielson. To be old school ish wrestling snug, uncomfortable on Sunday Night, I don't pay for you. I see that. Is that match for your Pam? Oh, they're late as shit. They're gonna hurt somebody. You know what I mean? Yeah. Because when they, even something as simple as this, I don't know what they're going to do. I have no idea. Don't want to. Let's say somebody uses a cross face. Boom. Well, there's a lot of ways to apply that whole. You can apply it like you work part time to DX station. You don't want to break your nose and go to the doctor because you don't make enough money. Or you can do it like old school guys would do it. They were so skilled in their technique. They could make it look like it killed you. And you've seen a lot of a lot of buddy knows this across face. There weren't scheduled. Yeah. But your nose is a instrument, I guess you could say. Easy to break or easy to make bleed. So, but it takes it's really the music and the lyrics to set it before here. But that's what you got. As you get into the combination comes together, they're God dang, man. There's just no reason you should be killing it. And that's what we expect to do on Sunday Night. I believe that there's going to be some matches on there. They're going to take me back to the attitude era. You know, I always find my head in a Superdome manner or cowboy book just best matches at the Superdome on Thanksgiving and Christmas and so forth. I always find myself back there because that's what made me happy. And if I can draw on that, then I think it's translates to the van and all watch on.

"The majority of American wrestling fans were not overly familiar with. It motivated more time here. And like I said, here's another guy. Everything was just cut short. Luckily, it's like MJF promo, he did with the other night. About, you know, being a bully, all those things. It was a great problem, by the way, I thought. But I think that losing my train of thought, I think that. Mood and needed more time and if we had given him more time, but everything seemed to be rushed. Everything seemed to be rushed and I don't understand that. It's just a, it's like having a political election every 6 months is that every four years. In America. It's just everything stays in the state of flux. And dogs are chasing their tails endlessly. So let's talk about what thing is doing domestically on all the house shows that sting versus flair for the world title with elegant as the special guest referee. Horrible. Horrible. It really was horrible. I probably had WCW 'cause you stayed there in Atlanta. And he got lonesome. Be honest with you. George George did and so I spent more time with him in a lot of guys. He just come by the office of hanging out. He had to order to go. Yeah. And he like to flirt with the girls. And we had a pretty we had some nice looking ladies working in the office there. Or so and told. That one of the biggest mistakes of Booker can make is to take an untrained referee. A wrestler that's untrained as a referee and put him in a match. I get, you know, back in the old days, all those little posters know Jack dips, he was referee and, you know, Rocky Marciano was a referee. Well, they're there for one reason. They're right hand. So, but I just don't see it's a good way to screw the fucking match. It's put Ellie gate. You think elegante in his wildest dreams he had one clue. So I brick on the right side or I break on the left side. If the guy's left handed do I Google his opposite sides that aren't getting hit in the face with his left hand left elbow? Yeah. But they don't know that. When you count the shoulders, your head should be even with a guy that's getting pinned. So you can see both the shoulders that are down. And that's a lost art. But they don't know these things. And you work with a talented match, talented talents. They're expecting you to be at a certain place at a certain time. Yes. Screw the whole damn chemistry and timing up if you're not careful. So all that was that was good for a poster. And if you're going to be, if you're going to do it, Connie, you make two referees. You have a regular referee in the ring, and you have a second referee patrolling the outside. Like he's a bodyguard type deal. To put elegant ring for God's sake, are we that must have been late for a flight, meant to get home? So is this so sense? It's almost comical. I should mention on the heels of this whole mood of sting thing over in Tokyo when they come out of there. It's at least reported as if Sid Vicious is unhappy. And he's unhappy that he's been asked to put over sting and Luger. It felt like in this era Sid was almost never happy anyway. What do you remember with Sid Vicious perhaps? His lot in life and being unhappy with it and how much of that had anything to do with sting and Luger. Probably had everything to do with it. Yeah. And not as much about Sid about the Luger and staying as one might assume. And, you know, said, as he should, had a very high opinion of his own work. It was one of those guys for it was a Kent this. You know he was going to be really, really good. But when you're dealing with talent Conrad, it's imperative that the decision maker in the booking department and the talent have got to be on the same timeline. In other words, if I'm talking you're the town on the Booker, you know, you and I got to agree that you're 6 months away from this big win, you're going to get the champion or whatever. We've got to be on the same timeline and a lot of guys thought they're ready today. And why am I not getting what I want today? And maybe they're right, but the issue is, that's not your call. That's the officer's call. Their coach is called a plays. All right, Garza and I'll call to play. Coach is called a place. So I think it had more to do with Sid. And since desire to be the top guy, which is what everybody in the restaurant should want to be in your company, the top guy. They make the most money. They get the most media stretch. They get the most covers and all these things. So video games, action figures. When I finally get my action figure, Obama, maybe the only song that's the world gets an action figure posthumously. We've had an action figure in WWE. You just spent an AW one. Yeah. It is weird. It is weird that Cody had 32 of them and you didn't have any. Did he really? Not really. I joked when it was out that he was no longer with WWE ass or AWS my group chat. Hey, what variant of his tie so they're going to do next time with the next round of figures if he's not there. So maybe what they could do is they could take your head, put a little cowboy hat on it and put it on all those leftover Cody once they've got for the next round of figures. There you go. Super they are. Your problem solver. So I sting and lex are announced as taking on the steiners at the very first super brawl, and it feels surreal to me that this is such a different business than it is now, but I mean, we're fresh off of this guy being the world champion, and we're putting him immediately into a tax situation. And it's two baby face teams. As a kid, I absolutely loved it. As an adult, I don't know this is what I would have done. What did you think at the time of the Steiner's first thing in Luger? It was like beautiful one or two off or short run program. It had no star power in it to make me interested in watching.

"So let's talk about very briefly because I know we've covered in our archives. The war games match at wrestle war 91. We did talk about last year, go out of your way to check it out. It's a vsco Sid Vicious and Barry Wyndham taken on staying payment in the Steiner brothers, Mouser would say it's one of the best matches he's ever seen live. He called a 22 minutes of solid mayhem with the crowd on its feet screaming from the opening of the action. He gave it 5 stars. Wow. So go out of your way to see it. We covered it last year in the archives. You can hear us talk all about it, but if you're gonna watch one of sting's matches from 91, this is a big spot to watch. Yeah. That's the one to see. And the other thing too about that, and you pointed it out. The other guys had a pretty good night too. Yes. The other fellas in there 'cause you get a guy like, you know, barriers in the same spot that sting was. Was it going to be fish? Is it going to be foul? Is it going to be a star? Is it going to be on top of the car and semi whatever? Sid, was that big vein of winner that they kept ready to happen? Then you get a guy like Larry Smith who had been a top star and it main event level talent. But it hadn't been lately. So he gets a chance to kind of rejuvenate what he's doing and give the, those in charge, the opportunity to see him, that he could still produce. So there are a lot of small little battles being waged in this match. But in staying, I guess, like you said, he had a great night. He had a really good night. But he wasn't the only one who had a good night, which makes it even more of a reason to go back and watch this match. That matches badass. No doubt. Speaking of badass, coming out of this, there's talk in the observer that they're going to try to put together sting in great mood off for an upcoming new Japan show. And I just can't help but think when we're looking all around in 1990 for a big opponent for staying. It was right there. A great murder. Amen. You know my thoughts on that deal. Crazy bastard went to a bookie committee one time meeting and suggested we put the NWA title, the title where it was called NWA WCW whatever on muda. And that was looked at like I was a little, you know, some sort of dissident, some political dissident or something. But I kind of got over it. December 7th, 1941. You know, how long can we hate the Asian people? It's like somebody said I saw online the other day. Maybe this week. When will the resurgence of the pro wrestling Russian villains rear their head? I hope not anytime soon. Me too. Me too. I know that our business is known for doing things that are distasteful. And not real wise or thought out. That would be one of the situations. I would not want to be the Booker that created a. Russian, you know, the closest thing we get close thing in the business right now is Miro. We have seen him in a while. He's still under contract. I'm sure he'll be back soon. But you know, the Eastern European guys, most Americans who are major part of our audience and got a clue who's who would that entail, Eastern European, what country does that tell? Well, I don't know. So in any event, it was interesting. But I like mood. And you're right. Sometimes it's what you're looking for is right in front of you. It really is. Like you said, communicating a new coat of paint. 6 or 8 weeks of vignettes. To augment his television exposure, having a decisive definitive wins, he was the package. And I know, I know, I've seen it. The women loved it. Believe it or not. Good-looking guy. And he did that. The moonsault was kind of cool. And the other things he did was kind of cool. So I'd love to see the program with staying in muda. Really played out well. And to the point that it would not have hurt my feelings, it became the chance. Well, we know that's not going to happen, at least here. But when they do go over to Tokyo, muta gets the win, the win, but then staying sort of does a heelish move. After the match, he hits a stinger splash on muda and put him in the scorpion death lock. Now, again, this is Japan, but I am curious. When stink first started his career, he was a heel, but man at this point since he's been a babyface. He's been a baby the entire time. Was there any consideration of turning him heel in 91 or did you know, you can't do that? This is our guy for the kids in the merch. The latter. Yeah. Our guy for the kids in the merch. But too much money in that character to teeter and go another direction on a show in Japan against a wrestler.

"On that piece of business. So, but he was over, but I like this right. Vance wanted to see sting succeed. And him getting a nice rub, the house shows working the main events. As he's in tags, he takes the fall that kind of thing. Seemed to work to start working out decently. From the standpoint of disappointment and frustration, that's a personal thing with Steve Borden. He had to live with himself that this thing just didn't work. And they cruel irony of that is, it didn't work, but everybody knew that it should and could work. Yes. I should get all the pieces together, put it back into place and start a plan, if it takes us a year, but we have a destination that we're going to. We know on this day that this pay per view is staying is going to become the champion. And the smart money might have been you wanting to become the champion at the end of the day, against layer. Until then, or you're rebuilding staying with a succession of wins and getting him away from the horsemen, exclusively, flair could have been working with other people, helping other guys and making other guys feel like a star. But that might have been thinking too deeply. I'm not sure. Well, the first challenge here for flair is not going to be staying. It's going to be Scott Steiner and boy Scott still has. I like that. Yes. That sounds good, right? That sounds great. I mean, everybody knew Scott Steiner had all the tools to be a top guy. One of the most jacked up physically impressive guys on the roster, arguably had the hottest move in the whole business with frankensteiner. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. But for whatever reason, the match didn't click, Scott has contended for all these years that he felt like flair sandbagged him, and a lot of people in the newsletters at the time said the same thing. And I know today's episode is about staying. Maybe that's a conversation for another day, but at clash of the champions, we see sting and Luger team up to take on doom and Dan spivey is going to interfere. And he's going to attack Luger before butcher E thrift sting over the top rope for the DQ. But somehow we wind up with Dan spivey and Lex Luger in a situation here. I don't know that that's what I would have picked for either one of those guys in hindsight. Me neither. Neither one were ready for that role. Like I said, Dan is 5 you never really found his creative home until you can't waylon mercy. When Dan's father came away to mercy, he became special. And he was booked half hazardly, skyscrapers, this partner, that partner, whatever, and Dan was always a reliable as hell. I think the business, the rest of business needed more dance 5 years in it, but the way that he was being booked was never going to get into the promised land. So yeah, I like dance work, but the way the mercy character I sit here on the show is one of my favorite personas that I work with as George the hell out of it. Those vignettes take produced on him. We're just I still think about them. They're very good. Really good. I want to mention this whole Luger sting thing becomes a bit of a thing as a tac team. Because we would see them take on Sid Vicious and stay enhancing at the Omni, and then take on flare and sit in both Philadelphia and Baltimore as a kid, I absolutely loved the pairing of Luger and sting. As someone on the inside of the business, what did you think of that? Was it too much of the good stuff? What we have gotten more mileage and building a card if we had these over baby faces in different situations or was there something wrestling fans always want new? Is this the way we get a new coat of paint on these guys putting them together? I think it rejuvenates both guys a little bit. It was great artwork for a poster for a graphic lex and staying their young and vibrant physiques. So there are a lot of positives to that situation. Without somebody starting already out there and real and JR land that, yeah, they work. Well, sometimes working is a extremely important, obviously. Hello. But it's not the only thing. If they were a great workers and they were obese lobs, then what do you got? Yeah. You got two pretty good workers at OB Slavs, not only to watch that. That's like watching ugly women. I just think that it's a visual business television business. And people ought to be pleased visually and Luger and staying for the kids out there and sting's face paint. They're big muscles or tans and all that. The women loved them. So I thought it was here's how to ask you this Conrad in response. Why not? Why not try it? Are we doing something better? Are we holding all something guaranteed to be better? No. Is this newer? Yes. Are you featured to your top earners? Absolutely. So why not? So let's also mention that even though maybe that title run wasn't what anyone hoped it was for staying, staying winds up being presented the pro wrestling illustrated award for wrestler of the year and inspirational wrestler of the year by Bill after, and I know people look at that sometimes and I say, oh, the PWI awards. But buddy, back in 91, that was a pretty cool deal. I mean, their distribution was major. And that meant that your top guy is going to be on the cover of that magazine. That's a great thing not only for sting, but the promotion, right? Yeah, good PR, good, merchandising, good marketing. A lot of wins there in those awards because they were looked at and like you said, entirely different than as they are now. I mean, every website has got an award award edition, it seems like. Yeah. You know, males have been doing his awards addition for probably 30 years. And a lot of people follow his lead in that world. So consequently, there's awards or I don't want to say a dime a dozen because that's disparaging, but you can get a little overkill on the rest of the year, all that stuff. And they don't understand what the criteria was to be to earn that distinction. But in any event, staying getting those two awards on a very challenging year for him is professional was very, very well timed..

"So as a reminder, we know that he's going to go right from dropping the title to wrestle war 1991. And this is where we see staying team up with Brian Pillman and the steiners to take on the horsemen, which is flare, Barry Windham, Sid Vicious, and Larry is a biscoe. He's hurt, so Larry's abisko gets the nod, but I think this is the first time we would see war games take place outside of a great American bash show, which was certainly a dusty creation, do you think he or wrestle war 91 and again, just to give everyone the context? I think that name was probably set in place before there was the whole Persian Persian Gulf situation. Right. But still, on the heels of that, now we've got a war games match. Was this the first time you remember there being like a gimmick pay per view for the sake of it being a gimmick pay per view? I know TNA would do a whole card filled with cage matches. And these days, WWE has a war games NXT thing, but they also have the Elimination Chamber thing and they have a money in the bank ladder match, not like when they need one, but now we have an event name that. It just feels like this may have been the first time. No, we're going to build a whole pay per view around this, whether we have a storyline that gets us there or not is irrelevant. This quote unquote gimmick match is over. Let's put it on pay per view. Well, WarGames concept had been and of course their dad is there to back it up for this claim what I'm saying. But I think it had a pretty good track record. I think it was one of the attractions that we had in WCW on pay per view that people seem to look forward to. It was low to a stars, it was loaded with blood, it had a unique little concept, the baby face is always lost to corn toss. So they were at a man disadvantage to get go. But I always thought it was a good concept. And it seemed to have legs, and I think that's what they were banking on is that they had enough legs that it could be a. Theme, and I didn't disagree with that. You know, you got this one here was a unique group. Zo visco at being added to do orange work, not the Larry could replace art. I don't know if anybody could, and then Rick worked extra hard because Sid was great attraction but said it was not the day to day 9 ending player. Barry, yes, Rick, yes. And it's a bisco probably was a little bit underrated, but nonetheless, I like the idea, Conrad. I thought we didn't have a lot to hang our hat on. So you hope that the war games title will compensate for that that makes any sense. So, you know, in hindsight, obviously it's a different time. It's a different era. And we've heard different schools of thought. I heard sometimes people would say, hey, we should advocate title changes on house shows and live events because if it never happens, then what's the need to rush out there you can advertise it as a title match, but fans know nothing's going to happen. But then here we see flare beats thing at a house show. For the world title, and that era should have been saved for a clash or a pay per view or TV. Or could you argue the other way though? Hey, it's good for a lot of in business. Well, you can argue the other way and probably at one point in my career I would have. I think at that point in time, we needed ratings. Yeah. We needed hits. So I would say just based on timing of the lay of the land. Probably it would have been better off to happen on television. That's my take on it. And after all these years, now I've been able to look back on it, seem like that would be the most sense. I also want to mention that staying while he may be losing the title here. It doesn't necessarily mean that the company has lost confidence in him, and I get why anybody in his position might feel that way. But it feels like to me there may have been more money and staying chasing flair. You know, for years and years, the NWA was essentially, you know, ran by a touring NWA heel champion, especially the flare years. And even in the Harley years, but the WWF was more of a, quote unquote, babyface territory. We needed to be Bruno or Hogan or warrior. So I guess you could argue, hey, if sting's still working in the main events and he still selling a bunch of merch, doesn't really matter, they don't have the bill. I don't think so. Yeah. I really don't. Because with bumble that built switch, title rain, embarrassment, embarrassment. And I understand part of that reason was, you know, sting got hurt, hurt his knee, metal tendon, the kneecap was shot, and had to have surgery..

"They sold me. So it's like when you run in that car now, goddamn, man, we got the Addams family, match. Where's mortis are going to be? Well, I'll ask you sexy back when I was about 12. Morticia Adams. But all those matches are like, God damn. And that's fun for him. And it's more challenging for the talent. I wonder who's going to follow who. That's another thing that you get at the political. Punk and MJF and a dog collar match feels like that's right up your alley. Dog cutler is old school, baby. Yeah, yeah. I remember seeing the tape of 83 of piper and ballantine. Because I had never heard of a dog collar match until they had it, which was kind of cool. There was no precedent for me to have a preconceived notion of what it's going to look like. And I thought that was a hell of an idea, but then when I saw it, you know, you always want to well to get this crazy stipulation. Can they pull it off? Yes. Can they execute within the bounds of the structure here? This has been given these guys. It is here. I was unheard of. I was shocked, and I was in the business. I just thought it was just a phenomenal. So I'm sure that both the students of the game that we've both know Conrad that CM Punk and MJF are. Yes. A lot of initials are, by the way. They'll study that match. They'll study anything they can to find one spot. One transition spot, wherever it may be. And I think that's just great. So they'll do a good job and I think this matches punk's idea. I think this is only the second dog collar match. And in AEW history, I think Luke Harper did it with Cody Rhodes. And I think that was the last one, but I know I've seen pumpkin Raven in a Ring of Honor. Dog collar match before and it's not a common stipulation, but me and because of that, I'm pretty excited about it. I'll be watching on paper view this weekend for sure. Oh, boy. Oh boy. Contribute to my retirement plan. Yeah, 'cause you get a pay per view cut, right? I mean, you know, UFC guy, you get your wish. No, no, I don't have that deal, but nonetheless, I have a good deal. If you're listening, let's get JR pay per view push. Yeah, come on, everybody needs a push for God's sakes. So anyway, today's show should be fun. Interesting time back. You know, we've got so much feedback. Our shows have done extremely well when talking about sting lately. Yeah. People like to hear stories about staying in all that and out, no matter how pitiful is created that was handed to him was he still around today. He's in a 6 man tag as you mentioned. At the pay per view. He made it work in a big way, and we know he's going to this weekend, but let's talk about 1991. Of course, as we ease into 91, 90s in the rearview mirror, and we just covered that last year here in the archives. Where do you think things mindset was? His mentality was when he's had this run that while we did spy a couple of ratings, it's really probably not peak creative. Running around with the black scorpion and we haven't necessarily sold a ton of tickets when the bell comes off of him in January of 91 and it goes back to flair. How did he take that? Do you think he took that as a failure or was it a learning experience or take us inside of his head as far as you remember? I don't know how it couldn't have been somewhat of a disappointment that falls on the category of failure. Because if all starts, his injuries, things of that nature. But I think he was probably very disappointed that his character had not gotten over to the level of where it was undisputable. He needs to be the guy. It just didn't work, but I never heard him publicly complain. I never heard him, you know, the Russian logger shit and the locker room, all that. The negativity that some talents have the ability to spread, they don't realize it hurts the whole locker room, not just themselves, the feelings got hurt. He never was there. He was always a class act in that regard, and a lot of guys Conrad would not have been. Would not have been. So the new WWE two K 22 video game is available for pre order now and in my pump for this one. Ray Mysterio on the cover. Come on, it's gonna be awesome playing his showcase mode. I hope you've seen the trailers that show the redesigned gameplay engine and stunning graphics. I'm gonna play out a match with The Rock, Sasha Banks, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, and the rest of the WWE superstars and legends..
