"The book was how you ended it. You talked about your martial arts friend. I don't know if it was like the last paragraph of the book, but we talked about sweeping the dojo floor sweeping the gym floor. Yes. And that encapsulates encapsulates so much. Like you have to do the work, you have to sweep the floor every day in order to potentially live up to your potential and be humbled by that. Yeah, I think ego is this ego is not this thing that you go, okay, it's not good to have an ego. I won't have an ego. Ego is this thing that's constantly creeping in. It's manifesting itself in all these different forms and ways. And yeah, you have to constantly be on guard against it. You have to constantly be checking your assumptions. You have to constantly be learning and humbling yourself. So it has trouble taking root. And yeah, I think it's the journey of a lifetime. The ego of a 19 year old college freshman is different than you go of the president of the United States and it's different than the ego of an NBA champion and it's different than the ego is going to manifest itself differently in terms of where we are in our lives and what we've accomplished, but we have to always be sweeping it away because it only makes us worse. It's a great metaphor. It's a great metaphor. Okay, stillness. There's my awesome segue again. All right, so interestingly enough, we talk about meditation and journaling a lot in our group. And it's funny because we actually use it synonymously, but they're actually kind of polar opposite things because I guess eastern philosophy is saying you have to kind of try to empty your mind and not think, but journaling is like diving deep into self reflection and kind of analyzing your writing something down and that's reflecting what you're thinking and then you're analyzing what you're thinking. So it's kind of, I think they're kind of polar opposites. When you're meditating, you have thoughts. The thoughts come and part of what's so surreal about meditation is you're sitting there in this thought comes in and you go, where did that come from? Why am I thinking this? And then you go, okay, I'm going to push that aside. So it's getting some distance from your thoughts, right? And you get a similar experience when you're journaling, right? Because you write something down and you're like, wow, where did that come from? Why do I think that? You know, and you're having a discussion with yourself. How is that possible? And so I think what these things are really doing is experimenting or fooling around with the, just the craziness that is how human the human mind works, but what you're really doing is just reflecting on your own thoughts. And rather than being sort of ruled by them. Okay. That makes a lot of sense. You know, journaling is a very interesting exercise. When I'm trying to meditate and I can only do maybe 5, 8 minutes at a time. And then I'm thinking about cat videos and like what happened on Netflix, the previous night. It's a very, very difficult thing for me to do. But when I journal, some disturbing things come out, you know? It's like, wow, do I really think that? And when you're looking at it on paper, it makes it kind of a little bit more real, but then at least you realize that that's not a good thing to think. And it kind of verifies the fact that you're human and you're allowed, you're allowing yourself to think these things, but then you can kind of analyze your way through it, I guess. Yeah, and I talk about Anne Frank quite a bit in the book, probably one of the most famous journals of the last hundred years or so. And her father was saying, she didn't journal every day, but she always journaled when she was upset or dealing with something. And that, to me, if you can't pick this up as a daily habit, okay? Second best thing would be journal when you're angry. Journal when you're sad, journaling when you're frustrated, journal when you have strong overwhelming emotions. Because then what you're doing is you're kind of wrestling with them, you're putting them up to the test, you're exploring them rather than just sort of letting them balance around in your head or just sort of sit there in your heart. This is what success is to me. And to not go but over here, this person is on a private plane. Wait, did you see the new Tesla that this person just got? Wait, they seem like they're meeting interesting people, that their house is nicer. There's a whole an influencer is basically like a fantasy version of a human being that we compare ourselves against, right? And so this idea of knowing the path you're on and not being distracted by the others is really important, especially if what you're trying to pursue is something unique, something that requires mastery, you know, you want to make, I'm a runner. So I sort of experience this all the time. You're running around a track or you're running, you don't know when the other person started and you don't know how far that they're going. And so the idea that you should get in a race with them is really dangerous because you're both running your own races and that who is in front of whom is determined by so many other factors. But this idea of comparing yourself to other people of being distracted, oh, did you hear so and so just started a podcast? I should start a podcast. Oh, so and so, you know, just got nominated for this award. I should put myself up for, we just see everything that other people are doing when we assume it must be the right thing to do, but we don't quite calculate the cost that it comes with, the distractions that it comes off. And we don't actually know if that person has the life that we want. Yeah. Yep. One

"That I am inspired by memento mori and the whole notion of it? What would you say to people that throw their hands up in the air and say, well, if I'm going to die anyway, why am I putting a fourth all this effort? You know, that actually turned their backs on stoicism because they say things like it's not always I mean, if I'm dead anyway, if I'm just a speck in the grand scheme of things, it's not worth the effort. Yeah, sure. I mean, I don't think the response of momentum more is nihilism, but I do think it should force you to question some things, right? If you work a job that you hate and you live a life that's needlessly stressful and complicated and whatever and you go, if I'm gonna die, what's the point? Maybe that's a good question, right? Maybe that says something about the way that you're living. And that's kind of, I think, Seneca's question. So to me, it's the amount of people that I like, one of the things the stoics talked about, and it's interesting that we're still talking about the stoics. Is like people, they work so hard, they defer the present so that they can, they can achieve everlasting fame, right? And the stokes would go, you're not going to be around to enjoy that. What's the point? You can't take the money with you when you die. So I think the part of memento mori should be getting you to question, hey, if I'm going to die someday, what's the point of any of this? So the reason I write books is not so I can be rich and famous in the future and my books can be enjoyed for centuries. I'm not going to get anything out of that. But if I'm writing books because I genuinely enjoy realizing my potential that I want to make a difference for people that I have things that I'm learning and being better even for writing them, well then that is a reason to keep doing them even if the fact that if I'm sitting down and working on a book, I actually try to say to myself, if I died tomorrow, am I going to be proud of the time that I put in here? Did I spend that time well, or did I get caught up in things that don't really matter in light of that? So it certainly does get you into some trippy territory philosophically, but I think ultimately you can wrestle with those questions and be better for them. I like that. I like that when you're asking yourself these questions and you're being self reflective, it forces you to say, well, is this a reflection of the way that I feel about my life right now and the things that I'm doing throughout the day? "Could be actually the catalyst that pushes us forward to actually accomplishing our goals. Yes. Am I right? Am I wrong in my office? No, no, you're totally right. And I think it obstacles help us into respect. So one, look, if doing what you do was easy, then everyone would do it. And it wouldn't be a good career, right? Like the entire, the foundation of our economic system is scarcity, right? If everyone can do it, if it's easy, it becomes a commodity and therefore there's no value, right? The harder it is, the more valuable it is. Then my books would not stand out, right? If everyone could run a four minute mile, then we'd all, you know, we wouldn't care about what's happening in the Olympics, right? Like the fact that it's hard, we shouldn't just see it as a problem. We should see that as a fence or a moat that's keeping other people out. So if we can get over it, if we can persevere through it, then we're going to be in a position to be successful. The other thing I think about though with obstacles is that when we say that we don't control what happens, it is true that some things are just not in the cards for us, right? Sure. We set out to do one thing, look, there are going to be businesses that do not reopen because of the pandemic. That's going to be an obstacle. What I'm not saying is, you just have to hang on and lose unlimited amounts of money and your health and persevere through what is what is not rational or smart or possible. You know, that famous quote from Churchill, where he says, never, ever, ever, ever, ever give up. He says, except in matters of honor and good sense, right? So sometimes we do have to quit things, right? It doesn't always mean that we persevere. But in finding that one road is blocked, we are forced to explore a different road that may open up actual different opportunities that we were not aware of. So what Marcus is saying in that quote about the impediment to action advances action, he's not saying that this road is blocked so therefore you will be able to move forward on that road. He's saying that you were trying to do one thing and now you can't do it, but it's an opportunity to do a different thing, right? So you were trying to launch some project

"As existence itself. And that there's sort of, there's a Paul Harvey quote I like where he says, in times like these, it's important to remember that there have always been times like these. Low Paul Harvey. Yeah, this humans have been going through this over and over and over again. And I sort of take two things from that. One, it kind of turns down the volume on the noise. You know, CNN wants CNN goes. This is not normal. This shouldn't be happening. And in some respects, that's true, but on the other hand, it's in their interest for you to be glued to the television and worried and convinced that everything is about to fall to pieces because if you didn't, you would get up and go do what you need to do, you would not stay there through the commercial break, right? And then the other thing that I take from this and my office was built in the late 1880s. And so as I sit there, sometimes I go, okay, so this building, you know, and the Main Street that I was on was built in this before the Civil War. So Civil War, panic of 1873, you know, panic of 1907, the First World War, the Spanish influenza, The Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the tech bubble, the great financial crisis, 9 11. All that's happened, right? And that this building is still here and that people are still here. So I take that, but I also go, hey, I'm descended from those people. Every one of us comes from a long, unbroken chain of survivors of events that were far worse than this. You know, Marcus Aurelius lived through the antonine plague, which was a pandemic that lasted for 15 years and killed something like 15 or 20 million people when the world's population was much smaller, right? But we might not be related to Marcus Aurelius directly, but we are related to people who survived that pandemic. It's impossible that we're not, right? Sure. And so everyone is a descendant from people who survived very serious things. And when I think about that, it reminds me that even if I don't feel like I have what it takes to survive actually biologically and culturally I do. Hey Doc, are you overwhelmed, sick of being the bottleneck? Not sure where to jump in and tackle projects? The idea of having an assistant may seem like a luxury and something you don't need.

"Speaker got up and he talked and, you know, being one of the people that was lucky enough to attend afterwards I just, I went up and I said, hey, you know, what are you reading? What books would you recommend to someone my age? And she recommended that I read epictetus. And so I read epictetus and Marcus Aurelius and then all the other stoics. And so it was from just a random book recommendation that I was open to that I did the work to explore that opened up this whole realm of possibilities. I think why stoicism hit me is that like a lot of people, I was looking for guidance on how to live, what kind of person to be, what, like in articulation of what sort of good ethics and rules for being a person in the world are. And we don't have a lot of that anymore, right? You know, not as many people go to church, not as many people trust the government, people aren't members of guilds or unions. There used to be or clubs or we used to people used to a far larger percentage of the population might serve in the armed forces. There used to be sort of codes that were pushed upon you that you were sort of raised underneath. And as that's gone away, our need for that guidance has not. And so I think I was looking forward. And I think the reasons my books have worked is that people remain interested in just answers to those questions. What should I do? What's the good life? What should I not do? What kind of person should I become? How do I become that person? Yeah. Okay, so when you, when you kind of dove into stoicism after this recommendation, who was the person that recommended? Dr. Drew Pinsky from loveline. Oh, no kidding. Adam Carolla and doctor. I remember. I lived in LA back in the day. And I used to listen to them on the radio, like on the public radio. It was a great show. Anyway, was he was he a celebrity back then? Yeah, yeah, I mean, this was like maybe 2005, 2006. So he was, yeah, it was a really cool opportunity. And it knows a little bit starstruck, but I just said, hey, I'm not going to be in a room with a person like this very often. I'm going to ask him a question. And that question changed the course of my life. And I do that that's a question I use a lot now. When I talk to people, I ask them what they're reading. I mean, people go, oh, how should I find what books to read? And it's like, why don't you just ask people that you admire for books that have changed your life? And that creates a pretty good course of study. And so that was just sort of a journey I was on at that time. Yeah, so I have a sexy 6 of my favorite books that I recommend to people in yours is yours. Obstacle is so E myth revisited because we're all small business owners and we're early into that. Obstacle is the way. Jocko Willink's extreme ownership. Let's see. The ultimate, the ultimate marketing, something by Chet Holmes, I forget the name of it right now. Yep. And then yours as well. Wow, I'm honored. Well, that's amazing. So yeah, there's several that kind of rotate in and out of there, but obstacles away kind of always lasts. And the most recent one that we added on there was stillness because of all of this, all of this challenge that everybody's going through. I actually, I bought a 150 books on a 150 books of stillness and sent them to my best Friends and a lot of the people that are listening to our voice right now have a copy of that in their hands. So make sure that I make sure that we did that right before this interview. But yeah, I mean, it's so true. I wanted to just ask you, when you kind of got into stoicism, did something kind of click and say, I'm going to write about this or did you just dive deep and then say, on the other end of it, say there's a lot of this that the world needs to know. So I think it was kind of all of that swirling around. So I was only 18 or 19 years old. I think it was 18 and when I think I was struck by a couple things, I was struck by, I remember my reaction was, how did nobody tell me about this? How did I not know that this existed? And then I was also struck by just how well written it was and how accessible it was, and so I kind of had two things. So one was I want to learn as much about this as possible for me. And then also I think there was another part of me that was just, I didn't know that this is what philosophy could be. And this is how it could be written. So it wasn't as if I immediately thought, oh, I could write about this, but it did change how I thought about writing and how I thought about speaking to the reader, how I thought about sort of wisdom in general. So it was a longer process of discovery towards getting to the point where I could write about it. But there was an immediate Tyler Cowen and talks about quake books, like an earthquake. He says, there are these books that just shake your foundations

We appreciate that I want to talk about the workplace here We've talked a lot about the great resignation four to 5 million folks leaving in the workforce That's going to handle on what it means for women Are they a part of that Are they representative of part of that great resignation And will they come back to the workforce Tara J Frank president and CEO of career modeling joined just terror Thanks so much for joining us Talk to us about women in the labor force as we enter into year three of this pandemic Hi there thanks for having me First of all yeah very good question When you ask about whether women are engaged in the great resignation they're actually leading the great resignation And to put a finer point on it women of color are actually leading the great resignation And there are a lot of reasons for that I think one when we think about the pandemic and the pressure that has put on so many people it also kind of enabled especially women of color to have virtual safe spaces where they weren't necessarily having to deal with some of the things microaggressions et cetera that they may have been dealing with in the workplace clearly the last couple of years have given people a little bit more flexibility and the opportunity to combine work in life in ways that gave them a sense of harmony So yeah most definitely That would explain for sure how it's easier for women of color to work from home Or how it's not as difficult when it comes to the kind of racism or sexism that they may face in the work place But I wonder about those who've left the workforce have they left because out of choice because they wanted to because now I don't know retirement funds went up with the stock market or they found a way to make it work on less pay or have they left because they had to Those who've left they left because they needed to take care of children take care of their elders et cetera Well some are leaving the workforce as we define it traditionally but they're not necessarily leaving work right So I think we have a couple of different facets of this Yes some are leaving the workforce because they're having to manage so many more factors But others are leaving companies not necessarily the workforce or working in general right They're creating new avenues of income in partnership with other people with their own kind of creativity and ideas But yeah they're leaving the traditional workforce as we know it And really just trying to manage life So what are we seeing in the leadership positions terrible Because I mean I think whether it's gender diversity or other diverse other types of diversity it really I kind of feel like at the lower levels there's pretty decent representation but the higher you go the more difficult it becomes you get real diversification Is there some solutions that the pay gap if it's like for like job for job Maybe that pay gap is shrinking a little bit but I think Tara your point is that if you look at the unadjusted pay gap it's still large because you don't see women you don't see people of color in enough in high enough numbers moving into the leadership higher paid positions Yes that is absolutely right So what we have here is essentially occupational segregation right You have women in lower paying jobs And to your question about what can we do in order to change that I think one of the things we really need to do that leaders and companies need to do is certainly start capturing data at deeper levels but also intersectional data So not just data about women representation but really looking kind of all across all those dimensions of difference They also need to get a much better sense of what's happening inside their cultures experientially because a lot of this bias that is keeping women from being able to move higher into those higher contributing positions we're not necessarily conscious of They have to do with things like women may not always get the same kind of coaching Women may not always have the same degree of visibility Women and especially women of color may not be being sponsored at the same rate And a lot of this is connected to affinity bias right Proximity When we have power which is mostly white men in these organizations everything that comes with the power flows to the people who are most like us And women are not benefiting from that Tara "1500, small business owners, 50% of employees and That most workers worked on site full time. 18% had a hybrid schedule for in person remote working, 38% said. They had, uh, primarily work remote workforce. And eliminated from the rest and were eliminated for the rest of the servant. The big takeaway from this survey, though, how is at 39% of employers say we expect you to come back to the office? And now there's a rub. There's a rub. And we've We've seen it. A lot of places here to where some employees are like. I don't know. This is working pretty great. Yeah, and and some. Some companies are saying tough luck. Too bad. You're getting back. And now now the question is going to be. Are they going to quit? Are they going to fight is going to be a lawsuit. Our employers actually going to fire people. If they say they don't come back, remote work, nobody. Some of the employers said Yeah, we'll fire him, right? We will fire you if you don't come back into the office. You know, there are some jobs where I can see where it's really beneficial to have people together. Just in exchanging ideas and the creativity that goes on that kind of thing, you know? In some jobs. I think it's really important and a lot of other tops, though, man, if if it's getting done, and people are more productive and happier than seems okay to me. Well, we'll see. I mean, because I'm you know, I'm in this and Steuby and Brian. We're all still working from home and broadcasting from home. We have zoom. And you know, I don't I don't know, Uh I don't know how it affects us, but I still feel close to you guys. You know, But do I strike started driving 40 Miles every morning at 3 30 in the morning? No 45 Miles. Will that happen? I don't know. We'll see. You know, because that's all coming up. Well, our own company is set to return to work in September. And, uh so so we'll see. It's I mean, it's no secret. I think the thing to remember is companies have the leverage here, right? I mean, I mean, because I mean delivery if you want, don't want to go back to work. And they're saying you have to go back to work. Okay? No one's forcing you to, But no one is also forcing you to work here. So exactly the boss is the boss and the boss says, Come back. We've got to come back. But the boss is the boss. Exactly. I will I will tell you. I'm a lot more productive here than I am there. I can tell you that right now. Because when we get off the year I'm still working for the next two hours or something. Um, yeah, for the next day. Before I was working to maybe 2 30 ish. I'm well, I'm still sitting in my desk. You're working at four now? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but we'll see the last time I saw you working from home. During the winter freeze, and those two hours after the show you had your wife's hair dryer out trying to get your heater to thought. Yeah, That was a special day. So Yeah, that was it Ever. Yeah. Has a masters and anthro zoology, which really has to do with what we're about to talk about, and is a member of the board of directors for the Human Animal Bond Association, Dr Flynn I think I've been doing this radio show. How many years now? 15 years. We've never done an interview quite like this Bats. You heard me right friends, bats and the human animal. Plan. Can you explain that? Because most people think of bats and I bet half of the listeners are already holding their hands over their head. You know, right? No, no, The bats are going to get into my hair. We have so many misconceptions about bad so anyway. Let you go from here. True. I remember well, my grandfather chasing Ah, bat around up in upstate New York in the kitchen late at night, and it seemed like something just from the depths of hell it come into our house. But the reality is that you guys are just fascinating little creatures and are so beneficial. I think if you go the human animal bond, there's kind of a zoom lens. We can go down really micro right to your relationship with your goldfish or over really your relationship with the entire planet, and they're somewhere in between. And they offer us so much. Harder. This results and cool things you think of that was over the past few years. We've learned more more about bees and how important these are. And these guys, they're just a tireless They're actually the second most common mammal surface of the Earth. There are almost 1500 species of that. About almost 15 in North America, and they do amazing work, mainly the biggies. I'll mention of pollination, parasite control and nitrogen supply for Million different other little creatures and their in their caves, but also for humans. All right, so I want to take. I want to take briefly one by one there and let's begin where you began. Well, let's begin. Then. When I say first I control they are amazing little buggers. In fact, they do literally billions of dollars of work for us on a daily basis on a yearly basis. It's average between one to about $4 billion appearance I control Meaning that one single bat can consume up to the 1000 mosquitoes in one hour, and we see populations of bad, strictly nine states. If you live in Texas, you know this well. There are some large populations. That's a really social they left to live together. They're really good bombs and dads. You take care of their village get one puppy year, so they're really really very careful with them, and the whole community is very careful with them. But there are places in Texas when it that's come out of the evening. They could be detected on Doppler radar. And they go out and fly over agricultural fields and all different areas, even living areas and remove enormous amounts of flying insects. That could be vectors for various disease and also problems for crops. Yeah, vectors for disease like heartworm that impact our dogs, But potentially Zika, which impacts people all around the world Aside from imagine, I mean, I'm sure there's need for some mosquitoes. I don't know what that is. But imagine if there were no bad how many mosquitoes we would have in the United States. I mean, it would be absolutely overwhelming and aside annoying. We'd have a disease problemas well, but pollination. I want to talk about that, too. Because without the pollinators, we've got a problem. Huge problem and again, people like to think it's like the middle of flowers and bees and things and that's awesome. But bats do this as well. In fact, they pollinate things. So you wouldn't think of like bananas and mangoes and literally if you've ever had a tequila drink, you say thank you to a bad because they call me I've got a plan so it would not have tequila without that. Then I'm not usually grateful. I can tell you Absolutely. In fact, That's why I really have a Bacardi. You'll notice if you look close, but they're logo. It is a back I never put all that together. You're right about that. Now I want to talk about the pandemic just a bit. It turns out bats probably Is it? I don't know exactly what happened. I'm not sure anybody does quite a this point. But probably the novel coronavirus. The SARS coronavirus to that we've been suffering with Really came from one of those wet markets. They're called in China originated in a bat may have jumped to a different animal. Nobody sure about that ended up in people, however. That's live all the time with all sorts of corona viruses. If veterinarians like yourself can figure out how they do that, can we help ourselves? That's the thing that backs they have the ultimate key and gift to us to figure out all of this. They can carry so many Corona viruses and they don't get sick. They never run fevers. They can withstand enormous variations of cold and heat. They even have really cool collaborative abilities and their blood. So they carry a lot of really cool information that we don't know anything about yet and so hopefully that's will continue to contribute to overall human happiness.

I've got a couple of myself from different manufacturers but this is by samsung and attach it to a bag or touch it to your phone or ticket to your keys. And it's kind of like a tile like dongle in familiar with tile trackers it similar it's got a bluetooth locator as well and But if you buy twenty one they're going to give you. One of the tracker tags for free was as supplies last. They run out from the free windsor about thirty bucks a shot and of course new earbuds out. How only to article that later. Apple is This is kinda rare. An update recently in big sur. Actually when when big sur shipped in november the firewall system the work done all non apple apps but allowed all apple apps to bypass the firewall. So apple has issued an update.
