For all the baseball fans out there, which is probably seven other of them other than myself, the Texas Rangers are using that as their pump up music prior to games and they have yet to lose a playoff game. So it's working for them, so it'll work for us. I thought you meant the New York Rangers when you said that. Nope. Texas Rangers. That's how much I think about baseball I guess. They're on a buy this week, so we'll see what happens with the quarterback. Ryan, your initial thoughts from the game last week in London. Say I. What if I said it's a beautiful thing that Tannehill's gone because I hope, well, I hope he's gone. I hope he misses at least. Well, I definitely headed the wrong way with him leading the team, so that's true. Yeah, so I'm hoping that he's out at least like five weeks and then we get to see. I'm assuming Malik Willis for probably the first five and then whatever games are left. Unless he's bawling out, they'll probably throw Levis in there to see what they got with him and. Quite honestly, I mean, hopefully Levis is the answer or Willis is the answer or are the answer, but I don't believe they will be, so hopefully they just are bad enough. Um, to get us a really good early pick next year and we can go get one of those top QB's in the draft. What's the record right now? Two and four. Two and four baby for going into the buyout. You know it's gonna be tough though with Rabel that then they seem to never die every year. They're good. That's the unfortunate thing. Yeah. Um, but I think I think going back to last year, they're like, what did they win? They they lost seven in a row and now they're two and four. So they're two and 11 in their past 13 games. How did I not know that? Yeah, not good. Not good. I think, uh, no matter what you said out for five games, but I mean at this point you might as well just just be done with it, right? Just figure out. You might as well wash those years away with Tannehill and move on. Get with Willis or Levis or whoever it is and give him a shot. And then it's hard right for Rabel because of that defense is always going to keep you in the game, so you never want to just completely tank. But for the next decade, you need to have a quarterback, right? I mean, when was the last time Tennessee had a good quarterback like Jake Locker? Oh, he was so good. No quarterback since I thought Vince Young was going to be like something and then he seemed like it would be, but didn't last right. Steve McNair. Maybe Steve McNair is probably way back, but even like, uh, respect to McNair, but he wasn't even like that good. He was just the best of the Titans. I mean, you're obviously relating this to a Bills fan like you are approaching the.

So we'll see that, but as far as Trump, I don't think he gets put on trial for his RICO case in Georgia until after the election. Rangers end 4-game slide with 5-2 win over Kings
"Rangers snapped a four game slide with a 5 to two win over Los Angeles, leading one to nothing. The range was killed off a 5 minute king's power play that carried into the second period. Soon after the penalty kill, Vincent Trojans scored twice within 97 seconds and the ranges maintained the lead. Washing football team second. Congratulations to the New York football giants NFC east. I mean, I know my eagles are in first place, but I don't know about that division this year. That was an impressive performance that, uh, they go. The Eagles go on the road and rough up the Falcons because I thought the Falcons would be competitive this year. I don't know if they're going to be that good. Carolina looked a little better than I thought. Um And I remember you know some of the Vegas Guy said. You know, Carolina is an interesting bet for the over. They also had the lion's as an over this year. I don't. I don't do the over unders, but I am always intrigued at the number that they come up with. This said there'll be times when you go. Gosh, can they win 13 games? Or do you think they're only going to win nine games? And it feels like there's a lot of teams that are around nine or 10 wins this year. But you've added another game as well. That has to be factored in. Yeah, I'm a club feels unfair that the four really good teams in the NFC West. I mean, I know it's only week one but spread the wealth a little bit because I don't know. Like I feel like the Cardinals are getting sort of short shrift in having a plane. That division. Yeah, you're right. Ah! Max Scherzer went over 3000 strikeouts. The Dodgers are 28 11 since they traded for sure. Sir and trade Turner. Yet they've only picked up a half a game on the Giants over that stretch. Oh, boy, Here comes the wild card won't day.

"Game swing either way, and they're not someone in like 91 wins because they got their 13 games up in their division were like, you know, play a couple guys here and there. Guys are joking around, you know, kind of Maybe pitch this guy. That guy I know. It's like, Hey, we are locked in right here, and it's every every pitch counts. Every at bat counts. Every defensive play counts. You're going after everything. You making big plays those those teams when they come into play a bad team, the bad teams just like man, my erase and jump up four after this series, so he just feels like that. You've been on teams that have been really good. And then you've been on teams that we know carried it all the way through until October and And won the whole thing. What is their difference between like the pressure that you feel like September baseball versus October baseball? And if you're going really good in September? What is the key to make sure that you keep it rolling into October? Yeah, And that's a tough thing. I will tell you. Uh, the wild card team here on were to me the most. I liked the intensity because you had to be intense the entire time you look at 2012 we one way out was like 10. Days out or 11 days out. We wanted Division. I think 2012. In We almost got swept by the red, and then we played loser out. We had to really made with nuts Loser out in Cincinnati and, uh in ST Louis Series. You know, but when you have to play to the end, it keeps you locked in. It really does it keeps you motivated because you can't pull a guy or skip a guy start. It is all the way out and then roll into September. You're from P eating. You feel I am I have been competing. We have been trying to seal this deal up for a while and now we're right into this. It's intense. You have to find a way to keep your goal set and because it's really, really, really difficult. I do believe if you win it too far out. It just is you just Guys, they just loosen up and the managers naturally naturally does it. I don't want to get anybody hurt. Uh, you know what? I'm going to need this arm backyard picture. Maybe I'm a I'm a pitch every three days, man. I'm not going to pitch here every night, even if the games of the line um you know, sitting some hitters sitting some defensively, sitting guys You know, just get them out of the routine. It gets frustrating Where, man, If you've got to stay, I was the ballpark did the same thing every day except my routine the same every day. I believe I was going to pitch in the close ballgame. Even if they said I was down that day, I let my adrenaline's spike like it should have been a close ballgame because well, one both he would say you're down. So you have your tendencies and he called down there and be like, Oh, I need to get up. Get warmed up. And now you're scrambling to find clean, You know? So like you never knew it. Both of you. You said you were down. You're like, Yeah, right. I'm down. For what? You know, like, come down for the first four innings of the game. You didn't know, you know, so I didn't write down for whatever. That's what I'm down for. Yeah, he'll be here. Yeah, I think I'm telling you, he put, he said, you're not pitching and he pitched me and I come in and look at him. He's like what? I'm like, nothing. I'm just glad I was ready. He said I wasn't pitching to that. Oh, yeah. I can't forgot about that. Yeah, Yeah, I know. But but he just gets when he gets to that point wanted to win, you know, And but I think it is for Kapler, a This is a great run. This is a great place to be right now. Right now to great place to be, um, being just barely up on the Dodgers keeps everybody's fire and emergency haven't found that playing good pitching. Well, they're hitting while they're playing great defense. And this is where I want my team right now. Jeremy, you were talking to Jeremy Affeldt, as we do every week here on October, Kruger and Brooks show you were talking earlier about. You know, some of the things you guys would do to Uh, to keep you loose or if you already lose to keep it looser. And you mentioned, uh, hotfoot. We don't see the hotfoot anymore. Bring back the hotfoot because you we'd watch those. You know those blooper videos from the eighties and nineties and they always either had the hotfoot or somebody with with the bubble gum bubble put on top of their capital guy sits there for two innings without knowing it. We need the hotfoot or do these young Thundercats now do they not know about it? Is it too complicated of a move to pull off? What can we do to reintroduce the hotfoot? To various dugouts in the majors. I agree that hotfoot the blowgun bubbles threat. It's super awesome Top nuts. I love that. And you always want to get it to like the guy on the team that like thinks she's like the coolest guy out there. You always him. You're like Oh, man, Whichever one of these players puts on his like newly polished Oakleys and resolved tucked in nice and like, you know, sideburns, perfectly trim. Um, definitely in the bubbles. I'm on that guy, you know, like, because that's the guy that just gets super irate. You know, uh, I mean for me, I would have done the bubble, but I think I would have done the bubble gum bubble to Alex Rodriguez every game. They would have probably had to trade me if I was on the Yankees because he probably got so angry because he you know, I would have had bubble gum on his head every game, but, uh, you just you just to me. Bringing stuff back like that is going to right now in this game is going to take some players, managers or coaches to do that to some of the players because I don't think he's players know what pranking is anymore. Like Is from what? I know that during the game. I mean, maybe who knows what goes on team flights in the buses? Hotels in the clubhouse is before the game, but I don't see a lot of that fun prank stuff anymore. You just don't and I'm not sure why. I mean, who knows? Maybe someone will complain that it's not politically correct or something, you know, but I mean it to me. I think that they should bring it back in, and, uh, I'd probably do it. That's why I probably last about one year. The bullpen coach because I probably didn't trouble down. Tell me have to go away. That's crazy. I felt Yeah, distracting, distracting his players and I am ready to pitch because he's got He's doing a bubble gum bubble on his head. Mid broken session for years and again a minute. So, uh, have you ever seen a prank gone wrong? A print on Ron will. There was a print that went, Um, man, I've seen several pranks gone wrong. Uh, there was a prank down on me that went way wrong and someone looses the baby powder bottle. On the cap on the on the family side. The problem. It was supposed to just kind of like real quick and dump a little bit, But I wasn't paying attention. I was talking to a trainer, and, uh, I was late and so I went, and I kind of like a hard shape. On the family pack bottle, and the cap wasn't on there at on. It just went in. The whole thing went down my pants and it was Peru to like in the smokescreen had come in that game, too. It was a great emotion coming to that damn movie. Wait a minute. I was gonna ask because we're family. What? You were using the baby powder four, But you just told us You were you were you were you were you were powdering the tackle box before you went out to pitch. Yeah. Like what? We sit in the game And it was Seattle is human was hot back there, and I was just like, you know, I just I just wanted to make sure I was, you know, covered, and it was not a good man like I ran out there. And I'm running across the field and guys are laughing night. I was kind of like I know what I did, but I didn't promise of late and I was a rookie..

"That crazy play through the that wacky Hail Mary. All right, so that was right after the Bible. Murray? Yep, Hell, Murray, they won 32 to 30. And so it was all right. This team is on the on the they they might do. All right. Then they played Seattle, right? That's when he got hurt that right? And then he gets hurt. And then New England is the struggle they lose. They lose to the Rams again. They beat the Giants and Eagles because they were bad at that time, and then they lose the last two games against the 40 Niners in the Rams, and so it just it fell apart, even though it felt like it was heading in the right direction, so that but it fell apart for a reason. Murray got hurt. Did he stopped running football? Yes, yes, And they became very predictable. It's a very good point, but they ended up losing some games that I got just I don't know. I'm betting money on Carol on the Cardinals to make it. Yeah, just a little context there. I'm I'm on the fence. I You know, it's not about me. It's not even about the Cardinals. It's about their division man. There's no doubt it's just rough. If they're like in the South, or they're in the NFC east of the different story right now, Elizabeth in the NFC East, they probably won 13 games. This upset with 13. I'm saying if they were 13, the Giants aren't as good as I think that, and Washington is not as giant. So line is. It's Yeah, it's rough. It's it's restaurants. Gonna sabotage this season. Billy's gonna Yes, like no playoffs and destroyed the season. The giant that's not the giant. What I was thinking three weeks ago. Yes, but then I watched the last preseason game by the way, was the only time the starters started. And it was ugly. And I'm not just talking about Andrew. Thomas got three sacks. You know, I know was sick. So he was sick earlier in the week and he wanted to play because he didn't have any time. Maybe there's a little bit of excuse there. But Matt Peart on the other side. The Yankees Are Regressing Back to Their Early Season Inconsistencies
"Did we really get ahead of ourselves with that 13 game win streak? I certainly didn't. I don't think you did either. We felt good. We certainly like to expose some of the old critiques that we had or the greater part of the fan base had to kind of live in the positivity and the optimism for a moment. But I think we knew that things would be coming crashing down to earth at some point. But then again, we also didn't think it'd be coming crashing back down to earth like this, but this is this is the 2021 New York IG that we have been talking about for however, long we've been doing this since the start of the season. This is the April to mid July Yankees that have tortured fans that have failed to produce that have not met expectations that have not gotten hits and clutch situations that have laid down when the game was out of their reach for their standards. And now we're back at that. Losers of 7 of the last 9 against largely inferior opponents and really pissing away the positioning that they gave themselves. I understand that look, were they going to keep winning? Were they going to break the a's consecutive wins record? Absolutely not. But we also didn't think that winning 13 straight would come with losing 7 of 9 to kind of just, you know, 15 and 7 doesn't really sound that good after you've won 13 trade. It kind of just sounds like you had house money, you took advantage of the house money and then you lost your savings account. And that's really what it feels like here. "Vote while according to the simulation that we're talking about over at ESPN dot com that went through 285 games and predicted the biggest storylines and a Super Bowl winner for the 2021 season. Uh, that won't happen because Seattle Seahawks will have fallen apart in O in eight starts. For Seattle after coming off of a year, where they made it to the post season and won the NFC West again for the first time since 2000 and 16 is ESPN radio on the ESPN APP Sirius XM Channel, 80 and ESPN. Plus some Courtney Cronin. It's Myron Medcalf has straight talk, wireless straight talk, No contract. No compromise. So this one kind of made me think about bigger picture wise. Well, what are the matchups that we're looking at? Looking most forward to and weak one in for me, Myron, I look at Seattle. Traveling to the Eastern time zone to play the Indianapolis Colts, who this projection has going 13 and four the Colts same Colts team that has a giant question mark with the health of the foot of their quarterback in Carson went to by all accounts Right now, we hear everything is progressing towards him, potentially being the week one starter. He should be the week one starter after The strange timeline went from 5 to 12 weeks, 23 weeks after yet surgery, But for them to go 13 and four and to make the postseason, I realized that they were only a couple throws away from beating Buffalo last year in the playoffs, but This Colts team is different, considering it's different quarterback who is also dealing with a pretty significant injury that we spent most of August in the preseason talking about. So when I look at this one, I think the more realistic thing is that the Seattle Seahawks after trying everything offensively from running the ball with their host of running backs to letting Russ Cook that them falling apart in going Oh, and eight is probably more realistic than the Colts, just ripping off a series of wind. And winning 13 games in a year where the schedule expanses 17. Yeah. No, I'm with you. I mean, Seattle seems more plausible. Like again with these projections. The Indianapolis Colts projection makes sense. If it's a 2000 and six projection, and Peyton Manning is still the quarterback, But if you're talking about Carson went to was one of the worst quarterbacks in NFL, we're starting quarterbacks. Coming over after the injury and suddenly being the answer that puts him at the top of the F C. I got a hard time believing in that, but I do think with Seattle. The challenge with them has been in the Russell Wilson error has been all these close games Like so many games, they've won by three by six, barely squeezing bag. And Courtney, as you know, when you're playing that kind of football, Yeah, You can work in your favor, but it can easily work against you. And I'm thinking that division especially, I don't know that Seattle is always going to Get out of those close games with that late field goal or that late score by Russell Wilson. That's a bad way to bet on the football team to play football to assume that he's going to be able to bail you out every time. And I can understand why perhaps things go against them this season and they get off to a rough start. The NFC West is unquestionably in my opinion, the toughest division in football this year where you have three teams Seattle included along with the Rams in the 49 ers. That should be sure fire. Playoff contenders in 2021, Arizona. I probably haven't at 89. I think that's really a fair mark, considering there still is so much unknown with that offense, and yeah, their defense should be better considering the pieces that they had at this offseason, but I just don't know what that's how going to pan out to be but a Seattle team That again won the NFC West last year for the first time since 2016 for them to fall apart this badly within this projection again, the projection says they're going to start. Oh, and a this year is going to be a ton of changes by seasons. And what does that spell for Russell Wilson? Because wasn't this You know a topic of conversation a couple months ago where he's not actually happy with what's going on in his not having enough of a voice in the offense, uh, and what he's being asked to do, and then he and Pete Carroll or BFF, and they're hugging each other during press conferences and saying I love you and all these other great things, but Um, this would be the writing on the wall that you need to see to know for sure that he's probably not the quarterback in Seattle next year and and who really knows about the future there of Pete Carroll? What do you want to retirees? The oldest coach in the NFL right now, um, that to me. Feels like if the wheels come off this year than this group, this group from the Super Bowl from, you know, 889 years ago, whatever it was that that's over for good. Yeah, I mean, it definitely feels that way. And I think you know the Russell Wilson Seattle Seahawks drama was sort of a secondary storyline because we were so focused on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and what they were dealing with. But I think this is the kind of situation where if they get off to this rocky start those story lines are going to become more prominent guys in that locker room are going to start talking about what's really going on. I'm gonna start taking sides and this thing could get really, really ugly and to your point lead to Russell Wilson Wilson saying, Listen, I don't want to be with this team anymore. It's time for me to move on, and it could be a messy divorce. But Man four team has had so much success with Russell Wilson..

"All right. Thanks for being with us. Everyone carl here with you on navy. Sports central we are into the home stretch and now it's time for our question of the day. I let's go ahead and check out the responses to the questions from our last episode and You may recall as we finished our conversation with lightweight rowing coach. Sean bag no. I asked the following. What are your thoughts on rowing machines compared to other kinds of indoor cardiovascular fitness equipment and here were the choices i gave you a was. I think they're great. I use them all the time. Be not my go-to machine but it's a nice change of pace and see forget it. I'd rather dive head first off the empire state building onto thumb tack and we also had over twenty responders to this one so that was pretty cool to see and based on the answers. Most of you like rowing machines as a nice change of pace so here the ones who went with that selection looks like there are a total of fifteen and that includes Tim smith tom mortenson. Dan pepper beatty smith. Steve gra vini luanne. Mati pod zoo. Sqi fred pay on. Td smyers michael davis sam ritter robbie valdez michael clark and melanie dougherty. Who also goes by the moniker. Melanie who loves her dog. So thanks melanie for responding and there are five of you in the group who use rowing machines. All the time. And those would be. Tom callahan william barbie warren mazanec greg shore and jason shaffer. Now for those of you who remember our podcast episode from a few months ago tom. Callahan is a former navy lightweight. Oarsman he offered up this comment. He says carl as a swimmer. I've always viewed the pool as requiring laps and as roma in their pre concept. Today's Those machines are nothing but two thousand meter gut busting time-trial devices. He goes on to say. I found peace knowing that this isn't the case and that the daily workout on the concept to machine gives you variable workout suggestions to do at your own pace and they also have a global community to log your meters so that makes the machine as threatening as a treadmill now and i agree. I'm pretty sure that until you guys before but The first piece of indoor cardiovascular equipment i owned was actually a rowing machine. This is about thirty years ago. When i was still on active duty in pensacola and i used to use that thing. Quite a bit Eventually i had to retire it because in the future places that i moved. I just didn't have a big enough footprint to to use it on a regular basis. So that's the only reason. I don't have one right now. As a matter of fact. I'm working off a circa nineteen ninety eight. Hr fifty five hundred cycle stationary bike. So that tells you how advanced i am. These days when it comes to indoor cardio gear. I also heard from greg shore who is another classmate. So thanks for checking in greg. He says he uses a concept to rower for all kinds of cardio conditioning and it goes for multiple short and fast intervals all the way up to endurance rose. And i'm pretty sure. I recall from a previous comment. That greg is a big cross guy. So greg more power to you. My brother was into that for a little bit. And i'm all into fitness but man you guys are just a little bit nuts for me and we also had a couple of responders in the empire state building. Thumb tack category The i was a little crow and the second. One was scott gordon who i think what. He was being a little bit tongue in cheek here. Because i don't think his enthusiasm for rowing has dropped off one bit since Since he started gordon's comment was Loved rowing so much The concept to feels like punishment but that and the water will provide good simulation and an awesome full body workout. We also heard from tom. Nicholas and john shea. Tom commented on the large footprint. Making it necessary to go with other options on board. The smaller ships and john thinks they're really good workout. So i'll add him to the five guys. I mentioned earlier as being big rowing machine. Fans the thanks to everybody who got back to me on that question That's great engagement on that one. So let's go ahead and move on to our question of the day for this episode. And it's very similar to the one i ask. Labrador calls her one of the most complete players ever to come to annapolis so As evidence of that she currently leads the team in kills with forty and she strong on defense as well her nine blocks so far. This season is good. For second on the team behind maggie bodman so the kids are off to a strong start this year and still is all around. Play is a big reason for that for. The men are focused on ashwin briggs. He is the captain of the men's cross. Country team briggs is from pickering ten ohio and over the course of his career. He has finished in the top seven in eleven of thirteen races. And you'll recall from our conversation with ginger rice last month that grabbing one of those top seven positions is key for the team To score well. So very very consistent performance from briggs So far in his career he's also a member of the indoor and outdoor track team He's an excellent middle distance runner. Last spring he is part of the patriot league champion. Four by eight hundred meter relay team and he was also the indoor eight hundred meter champ in two thousand and twenty so. "Opposition in my opinion Okay now one question i had. I was kinda scanning through martial scheduled from last year. I didn't go. I didn't go into twenty nineteen. But i'm kind of curious. Do you know if in the last couple of years they've played a that is run A triple option style offense or is it been mostly. The rpo stuff is mostly been the rpo stuff. Karl but they really haven't played a triple option team in a long time to be quite honest with you. I mean a lot of a lot of what they face is similar to what they do with the multiple receiver sets in the shotgun formation in that sort of thing so i really cannot recall a time where they played a triple option team recently. Okay so we'll see how they adjust to that. So last year the fed and heard finished seven and three. They played for the conference as a championship. What are the expectations this year. And how did the hiring of the new coach effect those expectations. Their expectations is to get back to the championship this year and win it. I mean obviously When marshall was in the mac from nineteen ninety seven to two thousand and four they won five championships in seven years their motto. Was we play for championships. And they're trying to get back to that honestly and they're trying to get back to Not only being competitive but also getting to the championship game and winning the championship game. So it's one of those things where the expectations haven't changed just because there's a new coach in place and a bunch of new assistance. Save for tim cram z. Who is the alone. Hold over from the previous administration. So i mean obviously you know they have a bit of a interesting out of conference schedule starting off with navy of course and then you know rematch with app state a little bit later in september but the expectations don't change even if this new okay all right good and last question and by the way i do want to ask you like five quick lightning round questions after this last one hopefully fun with it but is there anything else about the team. You want to share that. We didn't cover. That's pretty much it. Okay all right so just for fun. I wanted to rattle. Just throw these five questions at you just kind of see what you're thinking. Hopefully it'll kinda give the navy fans a bit more inside about the martial program that sort of thing. Okay most exciting football player to come out of marshall in the last five years last five years i would probably have to say although the defensive side i'll probably say devante beckett okay all right good and he played what position. He was the linebackers linebacker. Yeah got it. Yeah okay most satisfying win of the twenty twenty season the win over appalachian state at home in joan c edwards stadium when app state was twenty three ranked in the country and we pulled off. The upset held them to just ninety eight yards rushing in on seven points on the board. Okay good deal right the guy the guy either on offense or defense that could surprise marshall fans the most this year i would say probably rashied ali. He's a running back out of cleveland. Ohio shaker heights. And he's one of the guys that's going to be in line to replace brendan knocks for this upcoming season. He'll probably split time with more experienced back. But i think he's going to break out. Probably lead the team in rushing touchdowns and so forth. Okay all right. Toughest opponent onto thundering herd scheduled for twenty twenty one navy. The first one the first game is always the toughest game or main. You know obviously when you face a offense that you you don't really see that much anymore you know there's things that you have to prepare for mentally and you know it's more of a chess game as opposed to being more of a physical match up so i think that you know the first one's always the toughest one right right. Okay good okay. So if we set the number of wins for marshall this year at eight and a half are you going to take the under or the over. I'm gonna take the over. I think they're going to either. Go either nine three or ten into this upcoming season. All right all right. Good stuff all right aaron. That's all i got through today. That was aaron coleman the host of the runner with the heard podcast letting us know what we can expect from marshall university as they take on the midst this weekend i tell you what we're going to step away for a short break and when we return share my three things to watch for during the game that i think could determine the outcome so stay with us all right we are back we are back and what i'd like to do now is share a few of my thoughts regarding this week's game Specifically what to watch for in the first several possessions How the mid's perform in these areas. We'll go a long way towards determining whether or not they come out on top at least that's my belief i will say again that they're gonna have their hands full with these guys. Marshall played for the conference usa championship last season. So this isn't holy cross or lehigh. We're talking about anyway here. The things i'm going to be watching four during the first half that i think will give us an idea of what's in store for us as fans this year. The first thing i'd be checking out is how well the mid's control their emotions. They are going to be so amped up coming out of the locker room. And that's because every player knows that the best way to raise the memory of last season is to come out strong this year so keeping their emotions in check will be a key factor in how the midst play now the easiest way to determine how well they do in that department is to just watch for silly penalties. I can live with a couple of false starts. Or offside call them may come from trying to anticipate the snap count early on. But that's about it. And i definitely don't wanna see any of these unnecessary roughness penalty because couldn't get their emotions under control. Those usually end up working out pretty well for the other team Another thing i'd be looking for is the offensive line play. Last season was really rough on the left. Side of the line never really got settled But this year's line is really really talented. And they have a nice blend of experience as well now if the offensive line can consistently get the job done then. It's up to the quarterback to make the right decisions with the football. We still don't know who's going to be lining up under center but whoever it is he'll be the one who did the best job of that during the spring and preseason practices and finally. There's the defense. This was the one bright spot at the end of last season if they can create enough confusion along the thundering herds offensive line and plant some doubt in their quarterbacks. Mind as to where he wants to go with the ball that could minimize any advantage. At marshall has team speed. I'm really confident. That coach newbury and his staff have prepared. The defense will. So it's going to be up to the co captain's diego for go and kevin brennan to keep their guys focused on the field and get them playing at the same level as a final three games of last year. So those are the things that i've been thinking about of course. I'm just as curious as anybody else to know who coached numata is going to name as his starting quarterback Whoever it is. I think the difference will be like night and day compared to last year. And that's mostly due to having enough time to prepare but also feel pretty good about the skill sets that xavier. Arline tyler ty and messiah manner have that make them pretty good fits for the triple option offense all right that does it for my pre-game thoughts We'll be back shortly. Where the question of the.

Starting from about one nanosecond. After last year's army navy game ended. Spring practices went very well. And the coaches have been seeing a lot of really good things in the preseason also and that's really good because it's not gonna take very long at all for the midst to find out exactly where they stand. The thundering herd from marshall university would be coming to town and that team is no joke. They finished seven and three last year dropping. A tough one to alabama birmingham in the conference usa championship game. But coming back for this season we'll be their quarterback grant wells who conference freshman of the year honors last year and will also be returning several starters from tough defense at ranked first in the nation in fewest points allowed and joining us today to give us his take on first opponent is the host of the running with their heard podcast. We're really looking forward to getting your take on this year's edition of the thundering herd has it today. It's going well. how about yourself. Not too bad not too bad. So i guess the most logical place to start is with the head coach Last year after being named conference as coach of the year for twenty twenty doc. Holliday's contract was not renewed and the marshall athletic director hired Alabama associated slash running backs coach charles. I'm sorry charles huff. What's been the general feeling around the campus regarding this hire. A lot of people are really excited about a carl. I mean he brings a fresh excitement in a new enthusiasm to huntington charles. Off is thirty seven years old and a lot of people in the huntington tristate area were frustrated. About the fact that a doc holliday's marshall teams only had one conference championship in the eleven years. He was there now. They've finished first in the east division. A couple of times but obviously when you're champions of the conference that that speaks volumes of not only your program but also of the legacy that you're trying to build in while doc had his teams very competitive i guess Marshall university administration just wanted to take that next step in income. Charles hoffy brings a no nonsense approach. A tough love. Kind of approach in he's He's ready to get after it. Act and understand what you're saying there. We had a similar situation with our our women's basketball team a couple years ago That coach had routinely put that team near at or near the top of the patriot league and they'd had they had a couple of championships but it had been a while so they they made a change. They're a couple years ago and the results were still being evaluated on those results by the so far so good Again staying with coach huff. He's got a reputation for recruiting and developing running backs They're very good ones Chicago on barclay for example who coasts Penn state and last year as breaking down. Marshals offense just roughly. They threw the ball about fifty five percent of the time. So what should fans expect this year in terms of their brand of football. We're looking at a different system or an improved version of what you guys are doing. Before i think they're going to expect more of a high-octane kind of offense kind of a more uptempo kind of offensive attack. They're going to not spend a lot of time at the line of scrimmage looking over towards the sidelines and getting the play from the offensive coordinators in such. I think that they're going to have more of a hurry up style of offense if you look at the practices and everything i mean obviously The guys that are more experienced have a little bit of a little bit less of trouble adapting to the new system but for the most part when you look at the twenty fourteen Version of the her. That averaged over forty points a game Obviously we're very balanced running and throwing the ball. I think you're going to have a little bit more that this year. You lose an all conference player in brendan knocks in the backfield. But you still return. Freshman year grant wells. He has a lot of offensive weapons on the outside. So you're going to see a little bit more vertical threat from marshall this year. I have a feeling okay. Yeah and and that brings me to my next question around your quarterback grant wells who will be entering his sophomore year pretty good year last year. Sixty percent of his passes completed nearly twenty one hundred yards It sounds like this type of offense that you're sliding two might fit him a little bit better. Don't you think yeah. I think so. I mean obviously. The last three games of the season were rough for him. But i mean for any freshman main. You know you're going to hit that freshman wall so to speak. And he was missing some offensive linemen due to injury and illness. And that sort of thing. But i do think that he's going to rebound. I think that he's going to do well in this fast paced attack. And i think you're going to see a much improved. Grant wells in twenty twenty one. Okay all right. And he did mention In general some of the you know that he does have a few weapons of work with. Let's talk about two or three of those who are some of the guys on the offense that That navy is gonna have to be thinking about. And and what are some of their strengths. That could cause some problems for the navy defense. I think they're going to have to be thinking about exhibitor. Gains who came in as a quarterback a four star recruit out of the polk county florida area. And he's played tight end for the heard for the last couple of seasons but lined him up at quarterback tight end running back wide receiver so they moved them all over the field and he's a hard guy to cover another guy for the midshipmen to worry about on the offensive side is core gamage. Six foot four two hundred twenty pound receiver at a delray beach. Florida he led the herd in a receiving yards this past season and he had a three or four touchdowns for for the marshal offense in. He's one of those guys that Possesses a big body and nfl type frame and he could high point the ball at any given time. So those are two guys that you have to watch out for if you're a navy fan or opposing defensive coordinator got it got it and now. Let's talk about the thundering her defense last year. Thirteen points a game so pretty stingy. And that's pretty. That's going to be a tough tall order for navy to deal with That obviously played a big role in taking the eastern division last year conference usa. So maybe it could share some of the some of your thoughts on the returning players. Who the mid's need to be aware of as they try to execute their offense absolutely. Well you have a quality front seven for the thundering herd that only gave up a high of twenty two points in a single contest that was in the conference. Usa championship game against you be the average a giving up only thirteen points a game. They held a app state to only seven points in their contests that they played earlier in the season last year in september. So you have a quality front seven for the heard. It all starts up front with guys like jemari edwards Kobe cumberlander guys like that They're going to be providing some pressure. Also when you talk about the linebackers guys. Like abraham bo plan. Who is one of the top tacklers for the heard as well as eli neil. Up provides some thump for the thundering herd linebacking core. Now they do lose devante beckett. Who is the conference. Defensive player of the year is currently on the detroit lions but they're still some quality players in that linebacking core and also in the second. Dare you have some experience. Guys as well guys like stephen gilmore. Who's coming back as well as brandon. Drayton who forced that fumble in the app state game. He's he's got a nose for the takeaways and everything and you talk about some guys that have played a lot of football for the thundering herd in her going to be bringing it every snap. It's one of those things where a new defensive coordinator lands injury. has a lot of talent at all three levels of the defense and it's going to be posing some problems.

Previewing the midst first football game of the season against marshall university. But i i did wanna get you all updated on how the navy fall. Sports season has been going so far right now. There are three teams. That have gotten started already in. That would be volleyball as well as men's and women's soccer the vibe our team got going right away. They played four games over span of three days and they came out of it with a three one record so not a bad way to come out of the gate on friday the mid-speed binghamton three sets zero and cleveland state. Three to one and they followed that up with another. W over morgan state on saturday. The win over binghamton gave coach. Paco labrador his five hundred career. Victory the fourth year navy head coaches in his nineteenth year overall and his record is a remarkable five hundred and two and seventy two now on the court. The were led by jamie llewellyn. Who's a sophomore from port deposit florida. She had a total of eighteen. Kills in the first two games converting on forty eight percent of her opportunities and she also had nine aces on saturday. The team took on morgan state and won handily. Three to nothing The scores were twenty. Five eleven twenty five twenty and twenty five twenty. One llewellyn's classmate. Maggie bagman came through with eight kills in that match while senior cami. Herman added nine more on sunday. Navy opened up at home against howson. the tigers are defending america east conference champs and it was a great match but the midst came up just short three sets the two senior. Avery stole from your belinda. California led the way with sixteen. Kills biden chipped in with ten and both players. Each had five blocks coach. Labrador made a point of saying how great it was to have the fans. Back of the wesley brownfield house. It was really really noisy so with that kind of support. Look for the mizzou. Create a whole lot of excitement as they shoot for another patriot league championship. Okay now let's take a look at navy soccer starting with the men They took on in their home opener and came away with a one zero win. The midst kept the pressure on the red foxes throughout the first half ticking. Nine of the games. I ten shots and then sophomore baba kali scored the game's only goal when he found the back of the net in the thirty third minute. The navy defense limited mirrors to only three shots on goal after taking that lead and goalkeeper tyler funding turned away each one so after fighting. Unbc to a to draw last week. The mid's get their first win of the season and it also brings coach tim. O'donoghue one step closer to two hundred career victories. After sunday's win he sitting on one hundred ninety four now while the men's team was getting things done at home. The navy women's soccer team traveled to college park to take on the unbeaten maryland. terrapins It wasn't the best start for the mid's they fell behind in the very first minute the game. But then the navy defense dug in and make things really tough for the turps. The rest of the way Marilyn had more shots on goal. But the mid sophomore goalkeeper mattie gallagher was up to the challenge and she was able to stop those last five opportunities that the turps had the navy. Offense got going later in the half when gina freeman a junior from raleigh north carolina. Got the team even at one with the goal in a game thirty second minute. She scored on a really nice. Pass from khloe dawson. And that was it for the scoring in the first half and the second half. The mid's defense really clamped down forcing maryland into several.
