Bloomberg radio on demand and in your podcast feed on the latest edition of the Bloomberg Businessweek podcast a conversation with Mattel CEO in on cries and how the success of the Barbie movie could power other brands. Well we did say it's at least 125 million dollar revenue 60 % operating income margin but the real the takeaway from this is that this is one movie in one year and as we continue to scale our strategy and have more movies more executions not just in film but also television in location -based entertainment theme parks consumer product digital experiences music and and other verticals in some cases that's actually bigger than the toy industry we believe that we have an opportunity to capture significant value from our franchises. Well let's go there and I've got to say you know I remember when we started talking to you it was in the early days of the Barbie movie or you started filming so it was kind of fun to be along for that process but it was a movie that made us laugh made us cry and like I said it appealed to a lot of

"To softness in the industry and a weaker global economy. Enon joined us on Thursday to discuss the numbers, the health of the consumer heading into an all -important holiday season, and of course the tailwinds the Toymaker has enjoyed since the summer release of the Barbie movie. A movie I love, but you're right, they're getting into their important season. But before we get into the numbers at Mattel, we asked Enon to weigh in on the escalating violence in the Middle East and how the Israeli -born executive has been impacted by his country's ongoing war with Hamas. My family is okay, my immediate family is okay, but and know you of course as an Israeli this is very personal to me and I know too many people who lost loved ones or have relatives that have been kidnapped and are now you know on behalf of Mattel we condemn the terrorism and atrocities perpetrated by Hamas and stand against hate and violence in all forms. We express hope for the safety of Israelis and Palestinian children and families part in the Israeli -Hamas war. As a company since the Hamas attacks on October the Mattel Children's Foundation has been focused on humanitarian work including cash and toy donations to shelters and hospitals to support children who are suffering and we're sitting here all wishing for a swift resolution to the war and more peaceful in the future. Well it's something that you know people gosh who are I mean up to 80 years old at this point have dealt with their entire lives in that area of the world and I'm wondering to you and not speaking on behalf of Mattel but just getting your thoughts personally how this ends if a two -state outcome is the only solution you know it it's a complicated conflict and and we're now sitting at a time that is very volatile we see risk of of escalation and and we just hope for a swift swift resolution and wishing peace for everybody as soon as we can. I want to talk about Mattel. I have one more questions for you. Do you think Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not going to be the leader that brings lasting peace? This is not the time to get into the political discussion. Right now everyone is focused on resolving the situation. its Israel articulated priorities. We are all really looking forward for the release of the hostages. There are 30 children under of the edge 16 that are being held captive right now. About half the hostages are women and we really believe that this should be resolved as soon as possible. We pray for the safety and release of all the hostages that are now being held captive. You are absolutely right, but we do appreciate you weighing in on this because we have talked to you about serious issues in the past, so we really appreciate this. No easy segue, but I do want the business of Mattel. Talk to us about last quarter and the outlook. It was a tough day in the equity market for you guys. You did talk about tougher industry conditions. What are those tougher industry conditions that you guys are worried about? We did see the industry being soft in the third quarter and year to date. As result, a we adjusted our expectation and believe the industry will decline mid -single digit for the full year. Don, you need to remember that this is after the industry was up 22 % from 2019 to 2022, making an all -time high. After such a strong increase, especially in a challenging macroeconomic environment, we believe that this is a reasonable situation and doesn't reflect on the strength and resilience of the long term. The toy industry has been growing for over 10 years and it's a growth category. We feel very good about the industry and its growth prospects. Even in that environment, even in a softer market, Mattel performs very strongly. Our quarter exceeded our quarterly results, exceeded expectations. We showed meaningful sales growth and margin expansion with very strong free cash flow in the quarter. We saw consumer demand increasing and we continue to outpace the industry. So what would have to happen to bring in more than the 125 million dollars expected from the Barbie movie and related products? What needs to happen at Mattel or in the industry for that to happen? Or for the consumer I should say? While we maintain the top line expectation, we increase our outlook for a gross margin for our EPS and EBITDA and still expect a very strong free cash flow to flow through. What did change is that relative to our expectation at the start of the year is that the industry we believe will now decline mid -single digit. But the fundamentals are strong. We do expect an accelerated growth rate in the fourth quarter and significant expansion in gross margin compared to the prior year. For consumer demand to be positive for material in the holiday season, we expect an accelerated growth rate in the fourth quarter and significant expansion in gross margin compared to the prior year. So, we are performing strongly. We are heading into the fourth quarter, seeing stronger support from retailers, more shelf space, more representation in major holiday catalogues, and overall a strong position with a very broad -based offering of products across play patterns, price points, and we believe we are very well positioned competitively. So just to follow up there, the $125 million that you put out there, the estimate from the Barbie movie and related products, would you say it might be even conservative a little bit, Inan? Well, we did say it's at least $125 million revenue at 60 % operating income margin, but the takeaway from this is that this is one movie in one year, and as we continue to scale our strategy and have more movies, more executions, not just in film but also in television, in location -based entertainment, theme parks, consumer products, experiences, music, and other verticals, in some cases that are actually in the toy industry, we believe that we have an opportunity to capture significant value from our franchises. What are the key brands that you think have life beyond a kid's toy chest? Well, the vision of Mattel Films is to collaborate with leading filmmakers to create standout quality movies based on our iconic brands that will resonate in culture and appeal to global audiences. And the Barbie movie, and I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you did, is a clear showcase. we And have 14 other movies in development right now. Different demographics, different genres. We have Hot Wheels in development with J .J. Abrams, development with Skydance, and the list goes on and on. Our thanks to Enon Chryse, chairman and CEO of Mattel. He joined us from the West Coast while we were here in Philadelphia for Schwab Impact 2023. Still ahead on Bloomberg Businessweek, insight more on the consumer from a CEO in a completely different sector and one that's facing a tightening market. "Cryptomedia company CoinDesk is cutting its workforce by 16 percent, including 45 percent of its editorial staff as it prepares for a potential sale of a stake in the publication, according to an internal memo reviewed by the block. The layoffs are said to impact 20 people predominantly in the media team. The move comes as CoinDesk, owned by Digital Currency Group, is reportedly close to a deal to sell a 125 million dollar stake to a group of investors and is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. Soon to be shuttered, Silvergate Bank, previously known for its crypto-friendly services before it imploded earlier this year, announced in a regulatory filing the departure of three key executives amid ongoing liquidation proceedings. CEO Alan Lane, chief legal officer John Bonino and chief financial officer Antonio Martino will leave their roles, with Lane and Bonino departing on August 15 and Martino stepping down by September 30. Kathleen Freher, Silvergate's chief risk officer, will take over as the chief transition officer. The bank stated that departures were not due to any disputes or disagreements. The San Diego-based bank is in the process of winding down operations after reporting $1 billion in losses related to the collapse of FTX and facing several lawsuits. The bank's stock price plummeted by 44% following the announcement of voluntary liquidation in March and has fallen 99% from its all-time high in November 2021 to 20 cents at the time of recording. Meanwhile, back in New York, bankrupt crypto lender Celsius received permission from US bankruptcy judge Martin Glenn to ask its account holders if they wanted the company to restart as a user-owned entity, according to a Bloomberg report. The plan, managed by TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington's Arrington Capital, would see around $2 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum distributed to creditors, and customers repaid partly through equity in the new company. Some creditors, however, reportedly objected to the repayment plan throughout the course of the hearing, arguing they would be forced to take stock in a risky new venture. Judge Glenn's approval is contingent on Celsius' advisors sharing information about the crypto industry's volatility and potential challenges to the firm's mining operation. On Tuesday, crypto custodian Prime Trust filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, marking a significant downfall for the Las Vegas-based company. The collapse of the firm that once transacted $3.5 billion a month was accelerated by regulatory intervention from the Nevada Financial Institutions Division, which placed Prime Trust under receivership in June due to insolvency and breaches of fiduciary duties. A failed acquisition attempt by rival BitGo further destabilized the firm. Prime failed to safeguard assets under its custody and cannot meet all client withdrawals, stated the NFID. As such, Prime has breached its fiduciary duties to its clients in violation of Nevada laws. The bankruptcy filing reveals liabilities between $100 million and $500 million, with the largest unsecured creditor claiming $55 million. John Guidry, former president of the Bank of Nevada, will lead the restructuring efforts.

They're also supposed to be tough with updated hinges, but already this morning we're learning that they are not infallible. I did just see a man that was trying to out get of the station, pushed through the gates, and some folks have been using one card and ushering in three or four people through the gate, so fare evading is still happening. The gates come as Metro tries to cut down on nearly 40 million dollars a year on fare evasion. Metro Police are also writing tickets for skipping paying. "I just think with them, right they look at value our how do they value their not you're not getting him for what? Is it? Six games? Right? Yeah suspension the first six games of his contract and he served he survived those games at the end one. It's one game. Okay, so then yeah, like maybe he's an option I again with I just I I've said this before he's going to be probably top three paid received. Free agency, right? If not top five. I you know, if you're going to spend twenty five million dollars at that position give me a $15 guy and a ten million dollar guy instead of just 125 million dollar guy. That's just thought, you know, the Patriots need more than one receiver more than one established receiver. Can they go to the draft sure, but what are they really have four nfl-caliber wide receivers on this roster? I you know what Julian Edelman status is going to be during the year. N'keal. Harry obviously is still a project to Mere bird is a third fourth receiver. Maybe he's not a guy you count on a Jacoby Myers is the closest thing they have and she's even you know, he he shouldn't be your first receiver. He should be your third or fourth. So right there you need at least two. If not three guys, if you spend all that money on will Fuller all that's going to have to happen is we'll Fuller's going to get double-covered and yeah, Jacoby Myers has a slightly better year than he did last year, but you're kind of just right back where you were they need to have Optimum. They need guys who will stress the defense from different points blowing twenty million dollars on will Fuller. Well, he's a good player doesn't solve that it needs to be multiple players. They need to build an offense not just a bulb talent and what it's going to cost them to bring in will Fuller I think handcuffs them in acquiring some of that second level talent that they ultimately need to get back into contention. Yeah, I agree with all that. I think the biggest thing was off though just to play Devil's Advocate is that the Patriots have been the slowest offense in the NFL for two years, right? They've been I would say even arguably three years if you want to go back to the 2018 season, even though I'm with a Superbowl not offense had issues certainly during the regular season that time that's a really big issues and will Fuller when he's healthy and that's that's a big if if he's healthy he comes in here and he brings a level of explosiveness that they have not had since I guess Brandin Cooks, right? They they just haven't had somebody that can truly explode and create big plays for the offense..

Julian Edelman $15 Six games Jacoby Myers two years Brandin Patriots fourth third Harry 2018 three guys three years one game twenty five million dollars ten million dollar Mere bird last year first six games 125 million dollar
