"Right, rob night for the nationals and Atlanta just moments ago, a towering home run by dansby Swanson of Kyle finnegan makes it a three one braves lead as we are now in the bottom of the 8th inning and this is a game that seemed like the nets were doomed to start Patrick Corbin left with an apparent injury only 12 pitches into his start so they've been testing that bullpen, erasmus Ramirez. It was a pretty good three innings until he gave up a two run Homer. The Nats bats pretty ineffective for the most part, just one for 7 with runners in scoring position. They're one run was basically off of a braves error that should have been a double play, but ended up scoring the run. So the nationals trying to get out of Atlanta here with a little bit of a rally, not happening yet there for the Nats. Up in Baltimore, the Orioles fall to the tigers three to two, they sit now 5 and a half games out of the last American League wild card spot, 15 games left in the season so it's not looking too good. Former national Austin both falls to 5 and three. This after the O's offense only produced a gunner Henderson home run. The Washington commanders officially placed chase ruyer on injured reserve, they signed experienced veteran Nick Martin to the roster to bolster the depth at center with the eagles coming to town and the baseball world morning the loss of a D.C. legend who made stealing bases in art form in the 1960s and won three World Series with the Dodgers. "Innovation forward. Here's rob wood fork. All right, when last we spoke the nationals and Orioles were each getting shut out, not anymore. Swing a crow ball slowly hit to the second baseman. Grissom has it. Toes it away into left field. Vanessa will score. Voight is up and going to third and in its second is Cesar Hernandez. Well, that is a gift. Look like a potential in the NE double play ball. Chris him throws the ball past Swanson and it's now the braves two in the nationals one. Yeah, they could use all the help they can get Dave jagler on 1500 a.m. still a two one deficit for the Nats in Atlanta this on a night when the offense is only one for 7 with runners in scoring position tonight's starter Patrick Corbin through all of 12 pitches before leaving with what appeared to be some sort of injury. Ramirez, pitched a valiant three innings of relief, but he stands in line for the loss after giving up a two run armor to Travis Darnell. As for the Orioles, a gunner gunner Henderson to run Homer snapped a 15 inning scoring drought against the tigers still a three two deficit though in the bottom of the 8th inning in Los Angeles, the Dodgers honored Maury wills with a moment of silence today they'll wear a patch in his memory for the remainder of the season, this after the news of his death at the age of 89 earlier today, he was a legend here in D.C. born and raised, went to cardozo before a 14 year major league career highlighted by a 1962 season in which he was MVP of the All-Star Game played here in D.C.. "Dot com, use the coupon code while 20 to get a discount of $20 on an 80 year subscription, not just for MLB, you can also sign up for other sports versions of stat head if you want. And the great thing that is happening now is that we have listeners who have availed themselves of this opportunity and are now stat head subscribers. And so they are often writing in with their own step less or like answering their own stat blast questions. So Darren wrote in on Monday to note that the brewers Ethan small and the cubs met swarmer faced off as the starting pitcher in that contest and they were each making their major league debut. So we were meeting multiple major leaguers in that game, and they were both starting. And so he wanted to know it seems rare that two starting pitchers would be making their major league debut in the same game. Well, that is stat edible. And he posted about that in the stat blast channel in the Discord group and he is a stat head subscriber to and people walked him through how you find that. And so I will link to those results, but that was the 29th time at least since 1901 that two starting pitchers in the same game we're making their major league debut in that same game. And there's some notable starters who have made debuts in games like that, Jacob de Grom, against chase whitley, JR Richard against Jim Willoughby, Danny maclaine against Fritz ackley, bob forsch against Tom Carroll. It seems like the matchup that yielded the most cumulative career war between the two pitchers was Gaylord Perry against Sammy Ellis in 1962, with a combined for about a hundred war, mostly from mister Perry. We also got a submission along those lines, someone just basically did a full stat blast for us. They should start their own podcast, but listener, Jonathan, a recent subscriber and Patreon supporter and stad head subscriber said that he was watching Sunday's reds giants game, and he noticed that at the start of the 8th inning, Darren ruff entered as a pinch hitter for the Giants and struck out, the Giants batted around, scored 6 runs and rough got a second chance in that inning, but struck out again to end the inning, and then he was replaced by Kurt cassell, so he never took the field. And so Jonathan wondered how many times has that happened before a player participating in a game solely as a pinch hitter and striking out twice. It seems like it would be hard to do because it requires your team to bet around and since you're accounting for two of the three outs on your own that requires at least 7 of the other 8 players in the lineup to reach base safely in that inning. So he got himself a stad head subscription. Instead of asking us to answer this, he did it himself self sufficient. Appreciated this and I hope he used the coupon code while 20 turns out that this was only the third time, at least since 1901 in MLB history that this happened. First accomplished by John Canelo, may 20th, 1990 for Pittsburgh against Atlanta and then Jeff manto for Cleveland September 14th, 1997 against the White Sox, cangelosi was the only other player to ever lead off and end the inning with strikeouts Mentos for strikeout followed. A leadoff single by Omar vizquel. So if we're willing to add on one more qualification we can state that Darren ruff is the first player in MLB history to appear solely as a pinch hitter and strike out to lead off and end an ending in a team victory. So that's a lot of qualifiers, but canoes see pirates lost that 1990 game. So that was fun. And then he went further down the rabbit hole with John cangelosi, who's someone who had a lot of pitch head appearances and multiple plate appearances in those games. I'll throw that in a Google Doc and link to it just so you can see the full stat blast that Jonathan did, but again, stad head dot com. Anyway, the actual step blast is from Carson, who says, this will probably be the most useless question I've ever asked. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to know the answer. What is the most consecutive innings by a single pitcher in which he threw the same number of pitches in each inning? I have no issue with this including relief pitchers spanning multiple games if that makes the answer more interesting, but my question was initially thought up with starters in single games in mind. I sent this question to Lucas pastor laris, listener and baseball perspective, writer and researcher, and he did a little deep dive with his retro sheet database, so he went back to 1988, which is the beginning of reliable pitch by pitch data. He did not count intentional balls as pitches to keep things consistent with the way it works now, but that doesn't change anything in terms of the leader. And he found the answer is melito Perez. Perez in June of 1991, so in one single game, he entered as a reliever he was sort of a swingman that season. He was in the bullpen mostly, but he made some starts, so on June 15th, 1991, Ramon Garcia of the White Sox had a disaster start, he gave up 5 runs in anything in the third, so moledo Perez came in, and he threw 7 and two thirds shutout innings to finish that game for the White Sox, did not allow a run, one walk, three hits, 8 strikeouts, so excellent inning by melito, but he threw 12 pitches in each inning of that game. So one of the innings, I guess, was partial because he came in with one out already, but if we count that, actually, we don't have to count that because the record is 7, 7 innings, he threw 12 pitches a piece. So each of his full innings that day, he took 12 pitches, and then, in his next outing, June 19th, he came in in the 9th as a reliever to finish the game, and he threw one inning and he threw 12 pitches in that inning as well. So, the record within a single game is 7 consecutive innings with the same pitch count by molido pairs and the record across multiple games, any span actually is also mojito Paris. No one has done it even 7 times over multiple spans, but 8 consecutive innings with the same pitch count is the record by Molina Perry is in 1991 and it makes sense that it would be about 12 probably because if you had a very high pitch count, then you would run out of pitches, probably, and it would also mean that you were getting in trouble and getting hit around a bit, so you wouldn't be left in long enough to rack up a long streak, the average going back to 88 has been about 16 pitches per inning. So 12 is probably sort of the sweet spot. The second place finisher is real Cormier in 2000 across multiple games. He threw 6 consecutive innings with 13 pitches apiece, so that's the closest anyone has gotten and in the same game. It's a tie for 5 consecutive innings. And this season, the most anyone has done is for consecutive innings. So this is actually kind of tough to do and kind of have to sustain for any extended stretch of innings. Mojito Perez is your all time leader, at least you're on record leader. Interesting. All right, that will do it for today. All right, if you follow ups from last week, we got a lot of responses to our hypothetical email about a player suffering from glass S syndrome, specifically Ricky Henderson, if Henderson had a glass ass, could he still have been a successful base dealer? Well, it's not quite in keeping with the lighthearted spirit of our answer to that question. But as a number of people pointed out, one of Henderson's contemporaries in a great base dealer in his own right, perhaps the best ever percentage based dealer Tim raines did supposedly have a glass ass of sorts for a little while, reigns acknowledged using cocaine during the 1980s, specifically 1982, and he is reputed to have sometimes kept the vial in his back pocket, which would prevent him from sliding foot first..

"Bills with a high hold sets. Ready fires plate word and the queen takes up in a way. One ball and two strikes Mill 66 this year 4.25 e R A is making his 28th appearance. He has pitched quite a bit in relief this year. This is his 16th start, though. Logging better than 95 innings while striking out 71 walking 25. Pills. Ready at the belt to the plate the 12 pitch and make one again. Fouls it back. Mills has faced the Reds quite a few times over his career, mentioned that he's made two starts against Cincinnati This year. He's open to pitched once in relief. 5.68 e. R. A against the Reds here in 2021 overall 32 against Cincinnati. 3.77 e R. A Had to face him 10 times prior to tonight, very familiar with Alec Mills. Right handers home with 12 pitch. And again fouled back by Nick, One of the battle continues. You may remember this about Alec Mills. He will throw probably the slowest pitch other than maybe a position player that the Reds will see all year long. He's got in his arsenal. One of these real slow 65 66 mile an hour curve balls. You always wonder in the back of your mind? Are you the guy that's going to get that one? Not to mention that his fastball doesn't exactly break the radar gun either. One ball two strikes, Mills again sets ready and the pitch swinging a foul ball back to the backstop. Still the ball in two strikes but when you throw slower than slow It kind of makes that fastball play up just a little bit. You know, I'm wondering, Tommy. What Hitting speed is nowadays you know, there is a theory that you can throw above hitting speed or below hitting speed, but not in between. We've seen guys turn around fastballs at 98 Miles an hour, so I'm not sure if pitcher can throw one hard enough anymore for these guys. Bills gets the sign again from Contreras, who sets up high on the inside corner and Quinn swings. One hop liner in the whole glove by the third baseman played a second in time back to first. Not in time, find play by. Actually, that was Sergio Alcantara staying home at short to make that play. And he made the feed to Patrick Wisdom, the third baseman at the bag. So that will go as a 65 fielder's choice to get India at second base. That is the second night in a row that our Contra takes a base hit away from Tyler and make one same spot. Had.

"Taani did lead off the All Star game tonight against Max Scherzer. He grounded out to second now of Tani is pitching. We just had a foul ball. Fernando Tattoos Junior at the dish. This is the part of the All Star Game. That I was most looking forward to. I knew I didn't have to wait long. I just had to get to the bottom of the first inning and I have a tiny get hurt in the top half of the first when he was heading And I would really want to see the two faces. The two biggest faces a major league baseball right now showing Otani going up against Fernando Tatis Jr either want to see a strikeout or I want to see a home run. That's what I want to see the outcome be here. Outside of Tani. It's now one and one. So this will be the brief play by play portion of the program because we have live sports on you care about it. I care about it. Instead of going to another topic, which will be baseball in just a second and has to do with both of these players. I want to see what happens here. The 11 pitch from Otani Oh, Swing and miss by Fernando Tatis Jr. They're going to have a 12 pitch. I do love at a baseball game when it's a 12 pitch. You get two strikes. Everyone stands up. Alright, Here we go. Come on, Show head. Let's get it. Come on, kid. What he got. Let's go. Here comes the one to pitch by that Shohei Otani. Who Wow. That's gotta hurt Fernando to tease founded off his ankle, so we'll do it again. Alright. We're in Colorado. Here comes the one to pitch by Shohei Otani. I'm sure Spike asking, and David Mayor Nick right now are emailing trace. You are not allowed to do play by play. We can't do play by play. We're not really doing play by play. It's a talk show. I'm just talking about what I'm watching right now. All right, so I will report what happens afterwards. So I'm not doing play by play, just reiterating. I'm not doing play by play. Fernando Tattoos. Junior just missed that one. He probably set an expletive there. As he did not look happy. He did fly out just before the warning track in left field. And you see a little smile from Shohei Otani. Nice pitch off speed pitch. Fernandez that he's got it right off the end of the bat, and he knew right away and he gave like a little fist pump and out of frustration. You will agree, though, right? Trace if I had to ask you Give you five tickets. You get to pick five players that you get to see with those five tickets. If I only give you five players, Otani has to be one for the year. 2021. It would also have to be Fernando Tattoos. Junior right. Those are the two biggest names the most popular faces a major league baseball these days. Absolutely. Who would then? If you had to give me the next three. Who is your next three? B? I have my list right now. Tiny Fernando Tattoos are both on it. Who are the next three names? That you would give me two to round out to five for five tickets? I would go Jacob to Graham. He is on my list as well. Ronald Acuna Jr. Okay. Just got hurt. Unfortunate, but yes, very entertaining, and I would go Javi by us. Wow. I like that exciting electric kind of play. No, he's been around, so you kind of want to see maybe younger and newer players, But he's a guy. I like the energy he brings on a nightly basis. Did you want to go? I'm not saying that's a crazy answer, but I don't think many people would go with him being the fifth player there. Now he did. He did totally destroy the pirates this year, Remember? And all they had to do is go touch the bag. He starts running back to the plate, and then the pirates. See why don't the pirates do that against the Mets? Stop getting home run. Yeah, and start throwing the ball make literally getters, So he hits three career hits. All three of them are home runs up against the New York Mets. Those teams only having competence against other teams. Been up against the Mets. The teams that are incompetent end up being competent. Well, I like that Javi by his pick. He's not in my top five, but I think it's a good outside the box one So I have. Shelley Otani. Fernando tattoos Junior. You could say it's a New York buys. The only picture that would make it in the top five list remains Jacob deGrom. He's doing this year is flat out ridiculous when he's done for the last few years has flat out ridiculous. Vladimir Vladimir Guerrero Jr would then be one and he's having a great year. This year. They're in town next week. You know, I got to go to Citi Field next week to go see The Blue Jays. I want to, I think, yeah, not this week, but the next week. I think they're in a weekend series at Citi Field. He's someone that definitely makes you when he's in town. You want to go see Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I think also to Yes, he's so exciting on his own, but I grew up as Big Vladimir Guerrero fan where if it wasn't for someone that was the team that I root for That was the player that I just absolutely loved in baseball, and there was that I remember as a kid growing up. There was some rumors. That Vladimir Guerrero was going to sign with the Mets before he did go to the Angels, and I would watch Was up. Like the entire night, just waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and.

And young had to range from short across the second base bag to scoop it up. No way You're getting rowdy Jordan nuts, an infield base hit. For the left hand batters box get. He was basically running as that ball hopped for the first time and he was digging smelled base hit right out of the batter's box, and there was no way they were going to be able to throw him out. I only had a little bubble, but that bobble did not matter. By the time the ball was in his glove, Jordan was crossing the first base bag. And Er Tiner Allen now at the plate. He is over for two tonight. And the first pitch to Allen misses wide zone for ball. 13 runs on three hits. Mississippi State, no runs, no hits and two errors. Aquino just swung through a 91 mile an hour fastball that he appeared to be laid on up and in there was a cutter in on his hands. His body's going back towards the first base dugout, but his arms were so long and hands so strong. He just flips it often to left field. That pitch was off the plate away. That was almost a one handed swing, but he still was able to keep his top hand on the bat. Somehow is he just muscles it past the shortstop. And in the left. Walk in a single for the nationals, and they have two on with one out. And the batter's Kyle Schwarber. He talked about how much damage that shorebird has done over his career against the Reds.
