"1000 FM 977 stay connected stay informed. morning Good it's Thursday October 19th and at 531 we have mostly clear skies and 54 degrees in downtown Seattle. Along with Brian Calvert I'm Amanda Factor and here's what's happening. The family of Seattle resident Ramona says she's been trying to get out of Gaza since the Israel Hamas war started last week. Come of course Denise Whitaker spoke her with brother. Miles Okamura tells me his sister is now with other aid groups in southern Gaza but far from being out of danger. She also mentioned hearing Hamas rockets firing so I guess she recognizes what those sounds are and that's pretty ominous because if they're stationed nearby and firing then that means those people are going to be targets of the Israeli response. When Ramona Okamura retired from the University of Washington she started volunteering for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. Her niece tells me her auntie Ramona spent her last four birthdays volunteering in Gaza and now she's stuck there. Her entire family committed to getting her home safely. I think we're all obviously very concerned for her and at the same time there's a hopefulness and solidarity that we feel as a family. Denise Whitaker, KOMO News. 532 at News Northwest Radio, Seattle police still searching for suspects after two people were shot in a drive -by shooting at a bus stop. The intersection here at Aurora Avenue and 105th Street it is a longtime trouble spot according to the people who live in this area and work here. Police are calling it a drive -by and witnesses we spoke with say they heard about seven or eight gunshots in rapid succession. Two men went down but we know there was a crowd of people around the bus stop because the manager at the auto parts store just behind the crime scene he says people ran into his business just to take cover. Now the two who men were wounded both of them were taken to Harborview. A hospital spokesperson says they both are in serious both condition of those men 18 years old. Joe Marino, Como News. There's some new information this morning on Rite Aid's plans to close stores here in Washington. Five Bartels are among the stores slated for closure two in Bellevue, one in Linwood, one in Redmond and the Seattle Bartel on 15th Avenue Southwest in White Center. The other six closures are Rite Aid stores in Mill Creek, Renton, Lacey, Graham and Burien. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy earlier this week. No timeline for the closures has been announced. Tim Hull, Northwest News Radio. Washington General Attorney Bob Ferguson's long -running legal case against the thrift store chain Savers Value Village turned out to no be a bargain as the state has been ordered to pay the company nearly 4 .3 million in legal fees calling the state's lawsuit needless. A King County judge issued the award this week, eight months after the state Supreme Court unanimously rejected the Attorney General's claims that marketing practices by the thrift store chain were deceptive. A spokesman for Ferguson's office says the lawsuit helped to educate the public about the company's for -profit status and prompted Savers Value Village to make changes. Savers Value Village, which is based in Bellevue and operates more than 300 stores in the US, Canada and Australia, said it would donate more than a million dollars of the award to charities. A highlight from 144: A Conversation with Ken Burns - Storytelling and the American Buffalo

"Hello my friends, this is Professor Greg Jackson, and welcome to a special episode of History That Doesn't Suck. We're going to return to our narrative episodes slogging through the trenches of World War I in a couple of weeks in time for the 105th anniversary of the Armistice and Treaty of Versailles. But today I'm thrilled to share with you my conversation with legendary documentary filmmaker Ken Burns about his latest film, The American Buffalo, which has a two -part premiere in the U .S. on PBS beginning Monday, October 16, 2023. Some refer to Ken Burns as a historian, but he would be quick to tell you that he considers himself a storyteller. The late historian Stephen Ambrose once said of Ken Burns' films that, quote, more Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source, close quote. I'm not exactly sure how to quantify a statement like that, but it's certainly fair to say that Ken's films are an indelible part of American history telling. We do know that his 1990, The Civil War, was the highest rated series in the history of American public television and attracted an audience of 40 million during its premiere. I was only seven years old when that nine -part series premiered in September of 1990. And now, today, I count this and many of Ken's later films as important influences on my own journey to becoming a history scholar and storyteller. His latest documentary, The American Buffalo, is a sort of biography of the American or the buffalo as they are more commonly known. The fact is, we would only know of buffaloes from history books if it weren't for a collective effort to save this species from the brink of extinction around the turn of the 20th century. It's a remarkable story of how conservationists, industrialists, and hunters alike pulled together to repair some of what had been pulled apart by unchecked slaughter and displacement of wildlife and indigenous peoples. As you listen to Ken and our on episodes the Indian Wars, the Transcontinental Railroad, and of course, Theodore Roosevelt. And one last thing before we get to the interview. I want to remind everyone that I'm currently on tour with the live show. I wrote this show specifically for the stage. It's titled The Unlikely Union. Think of it as the first 100 years of American history told in 100 minutes with all the history telling and sound design you love about the podcast, plus lights, video, live musicians, and me on stage. So head over to htdspodcast .com slash tour for cities and dates, including two shows in my home state of Utah on Veterans Day weekend. That again is htdspodcast .com slash tour, and I hope to see you out on the road. All right. Without further ado, it's my pleasure to welcome Ken Burns to History That Doesn't Suck.

We've lost about 20 million people who have completely kind of left paying for any service either through the cable or their satellite provider or through a live service. But the cable companies are not having an existential crisis. If they're charging me, let's say $75 or $80 for a TV package. This is a Bloomberg money minute to say Elon Musk has had an impact on Twitter, maybe the understatement of the decade since the world's righteous man bought the company he has fired thousands of its employees scared off many advertisers and ended many misinformation policies. Now Musk's erratic approach to running social media may be hurting his other company, Tesla. There is evidence that testers not as dominant in the EV market is once it was at least here in the U.S.. Bloomberg tech reporter Ed ludlow. There's a lower proportion of owners around 65% compared with 70% last year that would say yes, I'm going to buy a test again. Oh, yes, I'd recommend one. One reason ludlow says is there are a lot more electric vehicle options on the road, but there's also evidence Musk is hurting the Tesla brand. It's been a circus show. Dan Ives covers Tesla, at Wedbush securities. You want to see him give reins to others that ultimately could operate social media. And even Musk has admitted he's stretched himself thin. I have too much work on my plate. That is for sure. Nathan Hager, Bloomberg radio. There's so much news happening around the world that were somehow supposed to stay on top of. United Airlines flight 93 with 45. Brave passengers and crew on board. Crashed headlong into the farmer's field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Hundreds perhaps thousands of lives were saved. But there was even more bravery and selflessness. That day. Some of the callers inside those buildings as they spoke with their loved ones. They spoke of some who were uninjured who may have been able to escape. But instead of leaving, they chose to stay with those who could not help themselves. Many colours also reported one man on the 105th floor of Tower one going from office to office, praying with people giving them calm, giving them the assurance of God's love. His mercy is forgiveness through Christ. But only a few were finally saved. According to all accounts that day, 2977 Americans died so many victims killed in those plane crashes or trapped in those buildings. But not everyone who died. There was a victim. Some went in voluntarily never to leave alive of those Almost 3000, who died that day. There were 412 1st responders, including 343 firefighters. 60 police officers, eight Medical emergency technicians. They gave their lives for those in need. Wow. And after all, the plane crashes that ended all of the buildings had fallen. Did they all just Go home. No, they stayed. They made their work our rescue mission and on that very next day they were able to save 11. People. Of those six were firefighters, three police officers. And the days of searching went on for a full eight months and as the rescue work continued. What did we, the people all across America? Do? Volunteers from all around our nation made their way to ground zero. They didn't care about getting paid. They came to help the workers. They're exhausted. But still in there, searching and there on the streets as the workers traveled back and forth from ground zero those on the streets, they stood on the sidewalks, some holding up pictures of their own loved ones. Suspected still to be in the rubble. Others just stood for hours praying, clapping and applauding as the workers past. There were even stories of people who brought food to pass out to the workers. Everyone wanted to help. That's what we the people do in America. We help On those days that followed, people began to put up flags everywhere, putting them on their houses on their cars, Some even putting flags in their pockets. People begin to put up signs. God bless America, but some began to ask. Where was God? When all of this happened, Why didn't God stop the terrorists? One excavator as he searched through the rubble. He found something that he recognized, but he could not believe he asked a Franciscan priest who was there. Blessing the remains of those who had died, he asked the father, would you like to see God's house? The father looked, and he also was absolutely amazed. And as so many of them there gathered around. "Me bring you in to tell the story of four little Kimmy Schmidt on and I know you're is taught. You have to be as tourney on this story as I am. Yeah, Partially. So the stories is she's earning his Ellie Kemper. She's a actually she's on the office. Remember hers? Erin on the office? I don't know She's to me like it's the type of person that you just look at and are happy because you look like just two. Seeing her face makes me happy. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because I'm a big office fan, but apparently the Internet has no such no such attachments. On. There's nobody happy on the Internet. No, everybody's miserable and like we're like, Gosh, I can't understand why we can't solve these problems. Every time you go into social media, everyone's awful. I wonder what the cause could be. Ah, so hold of the rent. But so Ellie Kemper, an actress. She, um is in trouble now. Twitter trouble. She's about to be canceled in the middle in the midst of being canceled by not just Twitter, of course, but multiple large media organizations who have now decided to jump on this bandwagon. Um, the wait, Wait, wait, wait. She's waiting. She's in Twitter Jail. Has she done anything on Twitter? No. Nothing. She said. Anything on people are tweeting about nothing untrue. They have tweeted that she is the KKK Princess. On the KKK princess. Wow. Yes. And you get the types of headlines from and you knows a very reliable source. The Daily Beast. Yes, the offices Ellie Kemper was beauty queen of a racist ball. That's how it's being. Summarized. So the back story is she was crowned the queen of love and beauty. At what sort of sort of was referred to as the veiled Prophet Fair. Veiled Prophet Fair is something in ST Louis. Where that it was created back in the 18 seventies, I believe now little known fact about American history. Everything created in the 18 seventies was racist. All things in the 18 seventies raises, at least exert well, especially in the South. It's certainly most likely, Yes, certainly as it applies to today's society. Even the people we look at, you know as civil rights heroes of the 18 seventies, said things you would not feel comfortable saying today. Yeah, I says right now was. It does appear by all accounts that the early days of this particular fair were. It was created by very rich, white, powerful people, and many of them were Racists. There's some of the imagery of that time again in the 18 seventies. Uh, that was what I would say. Looks themed to seemingly theme towards of the KKK, Okay? So okay. All right. I don't think anyone is going back and saying, like, you know, it was a great A great founding was the founding of this particular event. I mean, it was looked. It's been looked at for a very long time is having a problematic history. Now, over time, as we moved into, you know, the 20th century If he came to be a problem, people started complaining about those sorts of themes and over. You know, eventually, black people became members of the organization. You know, later on, you know the seventies. You know, this is 20 years before Ellie Kemper was named the, uh, the queen of love and beauty at this particular point, right? In fact, the name was changed. Like all of this is ancient history. They changed the name to fair Saint Louis. Ah and Ellie Kemper in 1999 became the 105th. Girl a 90 s. She was 19 years old to be given the title of, you know, to win this little now. Wow. What started this contract? I watched her all these years and I didn't know she was a hidden clan member. Yeah, Yeah, no idea. You'll notice she was not alive in 18 77 not alive in 19. So she says So, she says, Have you seen ever certificate? No, I haven't. In fact, I She may have been born. Who knows? Maybe in Kenya. We don't know We're gonna find that out later s O. So what started this recent controversy, Blood? Is, you know some idiot on Twitter, Of course tweeting. This used the KKK princess and referring to a 2014 Atlantic article article in the Atlantic had excerpts from a book about this particular fair, saying it was problematic. Uh, you know, went through sort of a history of it did not reference. Ellie Kemper of the story was not about Ellie Kemper, but basically said, like this fair is not a good idea because it has a racist history. Then someone digs up. Hey, Ellie Kemper was The winner of this award at this fair, and now Ellie Kemper equals racism, I guess is how we how this thing works now. All of the problems with this analogy. She she what? She was 19 at the time. She it was the affair was not even the same fare was named something else. She was not around in the 18 seventies. She it was not a cake fair at the time. There were black members through, for some reason, wanted to join this. Racist organization. Many years later, in nothing for points to the idea at all that she had any racist feelings intent, and nothing like that, at all is even is even be exactly suit. What White America the racist White America says. Every time you Point out their hidden systemic racism stew right now, even the people cited in the article. Have come out and said No, Ellie Kemper is not a racist. There's no reason to believe she's a racist. The people who said the fair was racist. Are saying, like You don't understand this developed into a ST Louis tradition, and it really had nothing to do. Its roots were bad, but it was not like that. At this point. Also, most of the girls who participate in this particular event are not excited about it. They're doing it for their dads. Their dads have been, you know, may be part of this organization for a while, they're going along with raises these the people who who are saying the organization is right was racist at one time are saying this about her. So, yeah, I think on its surface plays as a very typical ridiculous cancel culture Example. Right. There's no reason to believe Ellie Kemper is a racist. She has never shown any signs of racism. It is a completely nonsensical story based on some idiot tweeting something they knew nothing about it. And then the experts have been just because just know she's not racist. This is not what to assume from this piece. Event and just because this happened what 20 some years ago? Uh, you think that just washes away all of the racism that she clearly Either knew or didn't know on either was or wasn't at the time. You just think it just washes all of that guilt away. First of all, there's no guilt. She should not feel guilty about this. But the second error secondary part and, of course, you know, I shall say she should should not feel guilty about this. I will not be surprised at all. If she's apologizing, though, By the end of the day, we should be clear about that. Of course she will be. This is, of course, the way she's gonna handle it now. Part of the reason I know she's gonna handle it that way, or I believe she will. Is because she's a big liberal. She's no conservative. She's a She's a big liberal. She's been all over talking about. She's not like I would say an incredibly politically active person but has been every every example you could find of her. Being political has been to the left. Her parents were wealthy people from ST Louis and have some, you know loose ties supposedly to some Republican policies, but She's not at all that way and is donated to like black lives matter. So that introduced you to the second layer of the story, and I think part of it, which is interesting to our audience and how we react to it because I think we would all agree on the surface. Ellie Kemper is completely innocent here. And this is Blake to blatantly terrible example of cancel culture. On the other hand, there is certainly a part of me. That sees someone who donates to black lives matter, an organization that is actively creating this world that does these things to people all the time. Cancels them for nothing all the time, right when you are on that side of the argument, and you create and manifest this society in this way and cheer it on, over and over and over again, are we really supposed to feel bad for you? And I write Are we supposed to? Are we supposed to get up and and and help you and then But there's a bigger part of me. Stew That just says, Isn't it time to have some ice cream? Like, you know, Pat says this every once in a while Pat Gray from factory and least she says, I just love it when liberals eat their own. And like, you know, I I go back and forth on this because I can feel You know, there's that sort of instinct, Animal instinct inside of you to say screw her. She if she helped build this and screw her she's gonna have to She made this bed. She's gonna have to lie in it. On the other hand, I think the right thing to do Right thing to do is to Say that she's not a racist because you know what she's not, and there's no reason to believe that she is This thing is bigger, though this left right thing that we talked about all the time. Blend in that, like, you know, Look, they go after the left on this stuff to constantly right? What? What?.

Jason Hammer is here in the city of Indianapolis is getting ready for the spotlight. The 105th running of the Indy 500 is this Sunday. Hammer. You were out of practice over the weekend. The fast nine yesterday. Awesome atmosphere. We'll get to that in a minute. It should be a fun time here in the city. But the crime is rampant. It's out of control. Uh, Andre. We had two more killed in one seriously injured. At a hotel downtown. Let's say hotel downtown. I don't mean like a some shady motel six. This is that hotel and watching to the street, right? Next O t g I Friday's It's been there forever. The Fairfield here Million? Yeah. Um, two killed, one seriously injured in that That happened overnight. And when you look at what happened over the weekend There were two double homicides. There was a time sorry to double shootings, a triple shooting and a quadruple shooting that took place over the week that those air known as mass shootings. And it's staggering night. Would you look at the numbers that this city is doing every single weekend? Here's an example. Friday through Sunday, he just here in Indianapolis alone. Just Friday through Sunday, 22 people shot Re stabbed and there were six homicides and I spoke to some of my friends in law enforcement and They say the weekends in Indianapolis. It's like a war zone with the amount of shots fired runs that they have to go on responding to calls of shots fired. It's like a third world country now. And this isn't who we used to be. We used to have the occasional shooting. I'm not going to say that we never did. But we weren't having multiple double. You know, multiple triple quadruple shootings taking place all in one weekend here. I have a story. I'll relay unauthorized, sir. I'm not going to say which department was from, but an officer was being tailgated on 4 65 recently. Like like real close to the guy was tailgating the police officer going 70 80 Miles an hour down. Um 4 65 to the police officer kind of breaks. Pulls over and then pulls the guy over. That was tailgating him. Right, Officer officers like what? What are you doing? And the people that were sitting in the car said, Hey, we can do whatever we want now to y'all. So that's the mentality that was the basic essence of the conversation and the cop. His credit, stayed calm and cool and said, No, you can't and if you do it again. There's gonna be trouble. And so from there, it kind of, you know, dispersed, But that is the mentality we're dealing with right now. But hey, defund the police right Police reform. See how well that worked in Minneapolis in Los Angeles and yours ST Louis where the majority of those cities that passed legislation to quote unquote the fund. The police in some capacity have already announced. Yeah, we're gonna put some more money back in because this was a complete disaster. In Minneapolis. They were complaining that officers were slow getting to crime scenes and that the crime was getting out of control. Well, what did you expect? And the same thing with Los Angeles and what's problematic about Indianapolis? Is that the criminal justice leaders Continue to blow off the suggestions from some of our city leaders. Whether that be Reverend Charles Harrison, the F O P They feel like they've got a good grasp on this boss, Hogg said. Remember, he ran on the crime and safety platform and the Democrat Heavy City County Council. They didn't even bring up crime at the last meeting, smoking in the park hot Damn, that was on the docket, but a crime in the city making sure Marion County businesses can't maximize their profits and open fully. Is co vered dissipates and more people have the vaccine. All boy that was on the docket. Yeah, we can't let these businesses open up. Can't let them operate at full capacity, And they're real tough guys on social media, too, and there Running snarky things back to people in their communities who were wondering why things can't happen differently. They're real tough about that, but they didn't bring up crime at all. The last City County Council meeting Not even spending five minutes on it. It wasn't brought up at all. Ridiculous s O. That's the bad news. The good news, though, is that it is indeed race week here in Indianapolis. Nige. We are having the Indianapolis 500 something we did not have one year ago as we head into Memorial Day weekend. And man. It was great to see fans back out at the speedway yesterday. Having a good time, you know, engaging with each other there. I was, man. I took the kids out there. They brought somebody's with him. We had a great day in the crowd was really good. I went out on Sunday. They had action on Saturday and Sunday, but Sunday when they have bumped day and the race for the pole stands were pretty full. I sent you a couple different pictures, anybody yelling? It's about masks or anything like that. I mean, anybody has family. Nothing. And that's what was great everybody. There was cool. There was nobody yelling, put on your mask or calling for security. That guy's not wearing a mask. There was none of that. It was what everybody was doing the right things, right. If they're replaces the spread out, people were spreading out. Nobody was openly coughing and sneezing and anybody's face. It felt normal again. It felt normal being out there. And I knew that we were back as a city and the Indy 500 was back when I saw a drunk guy fighting with the yellow shirt. That was the moment for May that I said, we're better. So there was an incident with security, but it had nothing to do with the masterly. They like that guy's being allowed. Obnoxious drunk, right? Okay. If you haven't had an argument with the yellow shirt, have you even really been to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Like Were you able to like walk around on the concourse by the Dakota and alone? Those places? Yeah. Beer vendors and food and all that. Not every section was open. There are a lot of places that were closed off. But you have vendors open. You know, the march tents, all that kind of stuff, man and people were there having a good time. The weather cooperating. Missed it last year around this time, and then they moved into 500. What? Last August, and fans weren't allowed to go, and so we missed it that time around as well. So it's just It's just right having this before Memorial Day weekend because that's what the race is all about to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Scott Dixon, he is your pole sitter. He will be starting in the one spot for the 105th running. Let's hear from your pole winner. We started.
