"Everyone in Houston. We have our voices heard Stand up. It's the stuff Houston is talking about. Now. Call 71321259 50. That's 71321259 50. 3 19 is a time running him. 9 58 years seen We were just talking about the other banks and their economy a little bit with the difficulty they're having. You know, I'm just there on vacation. Um, the difficulty they're having filling positions. This has got to be a drag on the hospitality industry in general, I would think Not just in the outer banks, but all across the country. Um the other drag, of course, for all of us inflation will talk. Talk about both those things right now with bankrate dot com's Greg McBride. Welcome to the show, Greg Lot of the more popular restaurants. In some of the other retail outlets as well closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, because it's not enough help to go around and I'm guessing this is this is something we're seeing all across the country. In places that specialize in summer tourism. And not just places that specialize in summer terrorism. Yes, it's popping up in other parts of the country. I know in my backyard, I've seen restaurants that have scaled back their hours. Um, you know, one where they only opened the drive through and not the dining room because they didn't have NFL. I've seen the other way around. So they closed the drive through and you only have walking counter service because they don't have help. So, Yeah, very common theme. Um, And you know, it's just, you know, you've got nine million open jobs in the economy. Um, you know, and a lot of small business owners, you know, and even CEOs of larger companies saying, Look, we're struggling to fill people. We fill these oppositions. We can't meet the demand because we can't find people. Tell those positions you know, the debate is, you know is always over the the enhanced benefits If the enhanced unemployment benefits weren't there with more would more people be going back to work? Or is there something else at work here? What do you think? There are there are a number of different variables at play. Now there is some evidence that yes, those extended unemployment benefits. Do play a role when you look at the states that we're still offering those extended unemployment benefits. They also have the highest rates of unemployment claim filings as a percentage of their labor force. So yes, that is definitely an element. It's not the only element you know, certainly other factors related to childcare concerns about the virus itself. Which I think you know, with the delta variant. You're only going to see. See more of that. Um, so you know, a few different variables at play. Now. The other one is, uh, some of it is specific to a particular vocation. I saw wire story that quoted a guy who works in a theater. That has been closed since the outbreak of the pandemic, and his point was, you know, he's a 30 years about master technician with 30 years experience, and he's like, Look, if I just hang on for another couple months until the theater opens, I'm good. What am I supposed to do Go work in a pet store instead? And so I think that that is kind of an illustration that right that those And an unemployment benefits. They can help tide over that person who can then eventually get back into the line of work in which they're most productive. And, you know, ultimately, that's Went to the economy. But yes, as you, you know, noted, there's a lot of other um a lot of other tentacles to that. That you know can have unintended consequences. You have no no doubt. I think that the economy can only recover so much as long as we have all that in place. The other thing we've got going on right now is inflation. It looked up the 2019 inflation rate 1.76%. Current year over year inflation rate. 2022 2021 is now 4.99% enough. That number holds. I mean, in basic math. That means that a dollar today Next year's buying power is going to be a dollar five. So we we all have less buying power. If you would take a 5% raise for you to break even. And if you're not getting a raise at all you're falling behind. Invasion has definitely picked up. I don't think it's a fair comparison to measure against a year ago because of what's called the base effect. In other words, this time last year price levels were falling. So yeah, it's a little like comparing them. No 30 home run hitter this year to somebody who was hurt last year and only hit 10 home runs, right. Um, if we look instead, now versus 2019 the two year periods it's pre pandemic and then just, you know, annualized that inflation is still up. It's still it's up at an average rate of 3%. So I think that's Fairer comparison as opposed to looking at year over year, but very clearly, inflation is up, and it's almost double what it had been just a couple of years ago. Okay, we are told, at least by some that this is a temporary situation. Um, do you think this is temporary? Or if we put a lot of things in motion that would maybe tell us that this is probably a lot more than temporary Considering The amount of money that the government's been spending There are definitely wheels in motion that suggests that you know this may not be temporary. That being said the big drivers of this outsized inflation numbers we've seen lately. Are temporary in nature. My concern is that even when those subside things like used car prices, which have responsible for a third of the increase in the consumer price index, Each of the last three months. That's not sustainable. But even once that subsides, we've seen evidence of higher prices and other things that tend to be more sustainable. Uh, No transportation services. More than just the car. Things like body work. Uh, car accessories. Auto insurance. When was the last time your auto insurance went down? And then the one that I think is the real big one that's still to come. Shelter costs specifically rent and you know, the fact of.

"Talked about it on the show today and Bill and I talked about it with Geoff Blum. Zack Greinke is a precision pitcher. He changes speeds. You can go 60 miles an hour to 91. He works the corners and the key to the game for me would be. Don't chase the change up the big curve ball. Make him put that ball over the plate, And that is the key for me against Zack Greinke. He's been a giant killer over the years, but he's 37 years old, a little different now, and I think the Giants have to work him exactly that way. Another key to the game for me is Alex would This is a very tough lineup that the Houston Astros put out there, right. He's to 18 with seven homers, and he's going to have to deal with l. Two of a Korea and people like that. So, uh, for Alex. Would I would say keep the ball in the park, which has done a good job of 93 innings and 10 home runs given up so Key for me. Keep the ball in the park for Alex Wood. Don't walk anybody unnecessarily time Now for today's injury report, sponsored by Brown and Tolan, physicians discover care Where you are with Brown and Tolan physicians. Evan Longoria. "And Gallo crushes that one out to right and that off the facade of the third deck, and now another blasted out to right center. Nine seconds to go. He's got 10 home runs. He needs to do and he can't get it and time expires. He's got 11, so he's going to need to hit nine homers any minute bonus. I think if he could have gotten 12 13, there is a chance of that bonus time. But now I just think it's too far to go. It'll be really hard. I mean, you talk about not just Joey Gallo, but Tony Beasley. He's going to have to just be in a group for this final 60 seconds and they're having a chat right now. They're talking out in front. You don't see this a ton in the middle of the competition where the pitcher and the hitter or having an extended chat obviously talked about this clear they practice. All these guys are practiced at this point practice practice. You want to talk about practice? Yeah, we are. So Beasley We'll get back behind the L screen. Gallo will dig back into the left side. He needs nine homers in a minute to tie Trevor Story. Gallo digs in and away we go, Beasley pitches and a line drive to right. That won't do it next one crushed to write. If it's fair, it's got a chance. It's fair and it's gone. See you. Next one is blasted high in the air to right field that will get out of here. Well, here's one deep to right. "Out of the star power is gone in the game is largely unwatchable because the ball is in play a lot. And I used to just like bash hitters for that. Well, they're trying to hit a home run every at bat every pitch. Now it seems like pictures have been up to no good for a few years now been able to run roughshod, no supervision, no surveillance, no threat of repercussions or consequences. And that's how you get again. I used to think when you would I I'm in Pittsburgh. I still go to Pirates games. I'm a huge Mets fan. I said, I like to go see them play somewhere Once a year. In normal times, you go to a baseball game. They put the guys banning average on the huge scoreboard. I used to see somebody hitting 2 40. And I would think. Oh, my God, This guy is not a good hitter. Now. Batting average. I get it now. Not to. I don't want to go into a huge Tangent on how betting average is not the best way to measure how good a hitter is. I know there's O PS. Plus, there's war. There's all that, but Generally speaking, you see, 2 40. You don't think great hitter Now in today's baseball If you're hitting 2 40. By definition, you are an above average hitter. Because the average number of the dividing line right now is 2 37. So I want to know what you think of this. I wonder what you think about pitchers putting foreign substances on baseball. Hitters think that's why The hitting is so bad and the pitching is so good. And why the balls never in play and why there's so many strikeouts and why pictures are so dominant these days. It's just like in the late nineties, when we would see You know 60 70 home runs from guys. When guy like when players would pop up out of nowhere. They go from it in 10 home runs in here, then they were hitting 35 40. And we're seeing the pendulum swing that way with pictures. Six no hitters so far this year. Six. We've got pictures with ER is under one. We've seen guys like Corbyn Burns, who was a pretty good picture, Not a great one. Corbyn Burns, Garrett Coal. They've gone. It had ridiculous streaks where they've struck out almost 60 guys without issuing a walk. How do you do that? Nolan Ryan wasn't able to do that. Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson. Fergie Jenkins, Don Drysdale, Greg Maddux. Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens. Tom Seaver. None of those guys ever come came close to those numbers. Pitching has never been better, And now we're finding out. Why not? Because you know they're trained better and they're taught better and bullpens and everything. No, they're throwing harder and there's more break because of what of what they're putting on the ball. And I want to know if you if you care, And if you think this is a big deal Because I think from now on if you catch a pitcher doing it because you've got to suspense, starting pitchers differently than position players because they only pitch once every fifth days. You catch your starting pitcher doing this. I think you've got to suspend him for 30 days. I think if you can, and you know what and the players Association players union should go along with it. Because half of their Half of their base half of their Union, half of the rank and file or hitters. They are getting ripped off by this money is coming out of their pocket. So you want a fair and balanced game its way out of whack its way out of whack because they're putting Spider attack in Distilled Coca Cola and hair gel and all this stuff on the ball. And way more sophisticated ways when they did with Gaylord Perry and the Negro Brothers and those guys. So I want to know what you think. At 855 to 1 to four CBS 855 to 1 to 4 to 27. That's 855 to 1 to 4 to 27 My name's Andrew Philip Pony. Um, comedy from the Rocket Mortgage studios when you need an expert out, navigate the home loan process. Rocket, Ken I'm watching. Right now. I've got I've got soccer on the euro tournament. Belgium's up on Russia one Nothing College World Series games have been watching today. NBA playoffs tonight, Kevin Dexter will tell you more about that in 10 minutes, but I want to know what you think about this cheating scandal in baseball. Some people think it's worse than steroids. What pictures are able to do? The numbers are insane. No one can hit the ball anymore. How should baseball crack down on it? Your thoughts on if you even believe it, that a pitcher can get that much better from using. Some kind of ointment or adhesive. Crazy 855 to 1 to 4.

"It's it's you know, it's it's a renewal into coming back from a from a difficult period. And that's why I think it will be glorious. It one little baseball thing you're going to notice and I can't remember, But I think you guys might have been campaigning for this. A lot of people were campaigning for this. And we're gonna we're gonna save the statue of limitations ran out after 20 years. The uniforms go look a little different names. We get me so Yeah, Yeah. You have no idea who number 28 was. Well, Yeah, I'd always wondered. You know, if it wasn't for the name on the back of the batting helmet, I would have just been completely unaware. Like, uh, whoever this guy is, boys sure seems to be good. I have no idea what to call him. So popular demand by popular video of the names on the back way could just keep those archways closed on a permanent basis, But we're not gonna push it. At least we're not going to push it right now. Well, you got April. Okay? You got April. Well, thank God. So what's going on for months and months on that one right way haven't had any home games and we have Do we have We have 10 home runs is as a team. I think that maybe 11. Yeah, way were tied to the Major's home runs your of deadly among the leaders. That's for sure. Yeah, so we'll start. Let's see how that goes. You guys. You guys do the tracker on that. You know, when we won't do it, we'll pay somebody else to do it. That's how we operate. You know, you get to do it in a contract that out. It's just talking loads. These guys he's been begging stuff to do for about 20 years. Yeah, why don't we get rusty from old Navy? Maybe he could do it for us. Come on. Rusty is on the DL. Okay? What? 20 year deal? You know, with all with all this with all the salt in the air in the city, the rusty was gonna kill somebody before long. So where you guys left out on that? You have a really nice conversation for.

"That Zeus the reality so As I've said, you know, I think I like definitely sit down with these guys during spring training and talk to them about their futures and Talking, But you know, we'll talk about contracts will also talk in general. I think that's one of things that I felt like it was missed last year that hopefully we can do a little bit more of this is getting a chance to sit down and talk, so we'll have discussions over the course of spring. It's a perfect time for it. Um, but nothing's changed on that on that front, you know? I'd love to have that continuity and have some these guys going forward. But we've said like this. Financially. It is impossible for any team to build to continue that and to continue with that group. Um, indefinitely and as a result, you know, we won't be able to keep that entire group together really financially. You and that's the thing While it's not like this is goes back to the nostalgia conversation that we had yesterday. I don't want to keep. I'm not all about 16 anymore. You know, 16 is great, and we'll always have a place in my heart. This isn't about me keeping my fan favorites. From 16. This is about you keeping your best players in the prime of their career. Do you know what I'm saying? Or basically going through a rebuilt like what? If Let's play this out. What if Chris Brian gets off to a hot start? What if, in the first two months of the season he it's 10 home runs. What if he's hitting 3? 20? His O. P s is 9 90, you know, and you're seems at first place and yeah, and Kyle Davies is pitching. And so is Hendricks area has things going on well, and the Cubs are in first. What are you doing? But I think they're lifting the garage door up in there asking you if you want to come in and buy anything. Right, so that that's what I mean. Like how should Cubs fans approach this season? I mean, if we root for goodness to start are we rooting for Kris Bryant have a great year because we want the Cubs to win, and we like Kris Bryant, or we rooting for Are they rooting for a quick Chris Brian starts so they can get something for him before he leaves via free agency Because they're so far often demands. I would suggest date your team. Don't move in with your team. That's what I would say. I would suggest that you like your team, but you don't utter the words. I love you, too, your team because I think it's a weird place to be is in that when you good, Yeah. Yeah, but I'm just saying, like You can hear it in Jed's voice when you when one of the first sentences includes the term or the word financial Like it's not even to me. It's not his decision. He's been again speculating that that he's been given A certain ultimatum with regard to finances. And he's gonna have to find a way to navigate. The season with his marching orders in some way, So if I was you, I would Would be cheering for your guys to get off to a great start knowing that it's very likely that they're going to move on from them. But you're hoping that they can actually spend those guys into some valuable Young players that can either upgrade your minor league system or be guys that you build with going forward that right? That's what I want to know. And I want to know if there's a disconnect with Cubs fans right now over what you want to happen. Because if they do get off to a good start is that simply to trade them? Because then the value right now stock is low on everybody. Teams are not paying for good players right now. But in July When more people are vaccinated. Then there were people in the stands. And money's coming in. And teams are in the race. And then all of a sudden the team needs a third basement and they're willing to give you their top prospect. But you're doing well in Brian's doing well. Are you keeping Bryant in and trying to ride him as a great player that he woz to store or is that the time that you're trading him, and that's that's a weird place to be in his a fan. I don't want to see I don't want to see your heart break, so I'm just going to advise you to Don't move in with your team. But when the relationship is going well, you're supposed to move in really the odd thing. But what if what if your partner's about to move, there's a better opportunity across the country to some other town. Like anything but you're staying here. Is it to be that way You could find another job here because because money dictates policy, my brother. So you want if you're your significant other financially has another opportunity elsewhere. "We are stacks. We got Ryan Fitzpatrick roll on him. Let's see where he plays next year. Obviously, there's a conversation to be had about to, uh, we know that story down in Miami we've got Jared Allen, Former great player, defensive lineman Sacko Sacko orders back in the day. We've got sick one Barkley. We've got a lot. We've got your love as well. Which is a great angle of the Packers. Obviously the Aaron Rodgers stuff take a doing today, buddy. You good? Oh, is fantastic. We're one day closer to the Super Bowl of his excited about yesterday's show. Bruce Arians fired me up because of bias. But whatever it's all good man, This is the This is one of the most exciting weeks in the NFL season really? Always in sports season because of all the stories that you're going to hear. Leading into the Super Bowl in the game planning and everything else. So, yeah, this Tuesday. It's still snowing up here, but it's fantastic. Yeah, we're we're inching toward it. Man is we get a little dip? We'll do some game specific stuff today. We we kind of dabbled in a little, Yes, a little bit. But As I said yesterday, is we get deeper into the weak and closer to the game. Well, obviously start. You know, I hate these. They're breaking down the game. Welcome to 1992. We're gonna break down the Super Bowl for you. But listen, all the stories going around the game are or what drives the week for sure, we've got great guests. I gave you few taking mentioned Bruce areas. Bruce was with us yesterday. We're gonna play something in this segment that he said about Tom Brady. If you want to get that whole interview, just go to radio dot com. Apple iTunes all the podcast YouTube dot com slash taking charity, But, you know, take Remember when Tom Brady said he wants to play to the age of 45 minutes and we like it was like five years. Like 45 years ago. He said that that sounds good capes. Okay, Tommy, you got it, buddy. Well, he's now 43 he threw from 43 touchdowns This past year, He took another franchise to the Super Bowl. And I was thinking of some. Maybe this is being overly selected. But I think I've got a decent enough database, too. Cherry, pick some names and not omit anything That's too pertinent. Like Owen Pallett Willie Mays, his final season right at the age of 42, Willy. It's not Babe Ruth. If it's not Hank Aaron, he's one of the top three players of all time indisputable. At the age of 42. He had to 11 with an O. P s s 6 47 right. It was. You know, the old joke is, you know, I don't remember this. It was the year I was born. But in the playoffs with the Mets, he was basically running around the outfield. Um, just it was said, like, in essence, just kind of routine pop ups. They just He was no longer will the maze. All right, Hank Aaron, Very serious symbol of the age of 42 had 10 home runs hit to 29 0 P. S s 6 84 Dan Marino At the age of 38 12 touchdowns 17 picks Peyton at the age of 39. Nine touchdowns and 17 picks so as much as we left about, you know that that bold statement from Tom Brady years ago we've got a thought. And, quite frankly, we have based on what we saw this year, and even last year like it wasn't as crazy. In real time, and it's still not as it was when he said it. You know he is He is to be cherished. And I know we kind of take him for granted. I don't know if he's gonna win the game. The chief's A loaded the Bucks a load of both teams will coach gonna be a great game. But even aside from all that stuff like we need to cherish every city, even if you don't like Tom Brady, that's right. Not to like him. You gotta cherish the guy. So, Bt early earlier today, I did a hit with our affiliate, Our intercom affiliate down in Miami. 7 90 the ticket and they asked me. Obviously this question about Tom Brady and us and what we can What can we attribute this to? Means to you to say that. Well, you didn't say steroids, did you? No, Of course not. He's I'm 15 years, retired 15 years I've been retired. He's two years younger than me. And he's still playing. And so why, like, how is this possible? And the answer I gave them is is I mean, I was thinking about it real time, But now that I have had time to recollect on it I mean, it really is remarkable how dialed in he is to being excellent. Now. Obviously, you can't hit quarterbacks anymore. Like literally. You gotta hit him in between this little area right here in your chest. And even if you do hit him there, you can't take him to the ground. You have to, like, make an effort to roll away from them. So you don't land on top of them. You can't in Bolognese. You can't you know, shoulder neck area. You can't do anything with quarterback so they're not brutalized. Like they usually used to be a blindside hits. Remember all those right? Those those don't happen anymore. Bt health and training and medicine and all these things have advanced. There's a certain it like a like a a a drive that we can't discount with Tom Brady, and it's an interesting one because you don't see it. Right. Most of those guys that have this this this this chip on their shoulder, they really wear it like they're angry. They have a scowl on their face. Where is Tom Brady? Has this like this ever present like smirk? You know what I mean? It's not not during the game. He doesn't know. I'm not talking about that. I'm just talking about like as he's as he's leading up as you as you know him as you see him and media. It's not like a fool like smile like, Hey, I'm happy. It's more like I got this smirk like I know something that you don't know about me and you're never going to know it, and it's a drive like it's based on many different things. I'm sure he hasn't ever talked about it, really, But there's a drive inside of him that we can't discount and it's and it's and it's almost one of one. For someone to be able to do it this long and this consistently and so you're right, BT when you see a guy like Tom Brady, who's 43 years old, the thriving and ex Elling at this point in his career and not looking like he's missed the step, there's something that we're not able to fully reconciled because we've never really seen this and in many places to play this long, especially in a sport is a Christmas at the NFL. And so, yeah, we give them a ton of credit for being the goat..
