Dateable Podcast
A highlight from S17E5: Should you stay or should you go?
"Hi, I'm Yui Xu and I'm Julie Krafcik. We're active daters turned dating sociologists here to dive into everything modern dating and relationships. Welcome to the dateable podcast. Welcome back, friends. We are you and Julie back for more of love radio on a one point five FM. People are like, am I in the right place right now? That was a good sexy radio voice there. Here to answer all of your love questions. Is this what you do at night at practice? How do you know? Have a side gig? You know, that's what I did. I used to listen to a lot of late night radio in high school because that was kind of our podcast back in the day. Yeah, I was like, does this actually exist? OK, so this is a story I won't like out our friend. This is a mutual friend of ours. I don't think you know the story. She wrote it to Dr. Drew. This is what she was dating her husband at the beginning. And she was unsure about was he ambitious enough? Was he a career driven enough? And she called in the late night radio. They put her on air and heard it. And they were just like, shut the fuck up. Like this guy treats you great. Just get over it. And it helped her move forward. Look, I know she's married to him, so it worked out good for Dr. Drew. I used to give shout outs to boys. I had crushes on on the radio. Did you ever do that? No. I'd be like, is there someone you want to give a shout out to? Dial 1 -800 -da -da -da -da -da -da. So I did that. I remember doing that. There was a guy named Bradley. I was so madly in love with him. And I used to give him shout outs all the time. He didn't even go to my school. I don't even know if he knew my name. I'd be like, this message is for Bradley. This is UA. I just want to say I really love you from afar. And if you get this message on air, give me a call. And I would give my phone number and the radio station would be like, beep, beep, beep, beep. Like, little girl, please do not give out your number in public. That's amazing. Did I tell you I used to work at a radio station back in the day? What? Look at that foreshadowing. I was at the promotions department. I wasn't actually on the on air team at all. But yeah, I guess there was something there. All that to set you up to talk about this very deep topic today. Oh, yes, it's a good one. We're just doing another one of those episodes where it's just Julie and I to discuss a topic that we have such a strong interest in. So you'll hear our voices on this episode. Yes. You know, this is a topic that we feel very, very strongly about. But we did a call out in our Facebook group of what type of topics are you interested in for this upcoming season? And someone put this down and we're like, this is a good topic. Like, what is the line of when you should stay and try to, like, make something work versus leave and go? This topic is such a popular one because we are told such contradictory messages about relationships. On one hand, you're told relationships are hard. You got to work at them. And on the other hand, we're told when you're with the right person, things should be easy and you shouldn't have to work too hard in the relationship. But once you're in a relationship and you feel like you're really trying hard to make it work, what is that point of saying I've tried hard enough? I've tried my very best. I've tried everything and it hasn't worked. Yeah. So it's time to get out. Or is it the point of like, we could try harder? This applies to when you're in like the committed, full on relationship. And I think it even extends earlier. We hear of people all the time being like, oh, I went on one or two dates, should I go out with them again? You never know. Like, when is that inflection point that you should give something more of a chance versus cut your loss and try to meet other people? And I think the other piece of this is so often there's a camp that doesn't try hard enough, right, when things get tough in a relationship or when, you know, maybe it's not fireworks or the spark at first sight, but then on the flip side, I've been here before. I don't know about you, UA, but like when you overstay and you know, something's not working yet, you just continue to try to make it work. And we see this all the time, especially like when people are in situationships, it's like, oh, if they only see how good of a partner I can be, I'm going to just keep trying to like make them see what they could be missing out on instead of just being like, this person doesn't want the same thing as me. I'm going to move on. How many times have you talked to someone who've been in a long term relationship and you ask them how long it was, and they always say two years too long or one year too long or should have ended at the second year. And I would argue that there is no overstaying in a relationship. I feel like the overstaying years are the trying years. You're just trying, right? We only think we overstayed in hindsight, but when you're in the relationship, I get it, like you really just want to try your very best. So as we go into this conversation, maybe we can just get that out of our heads. It's like, you're not overstaying. You're just trying to work through the entire process. I agree with you in most scenarios, but I do think there are some when like you're clearly not on the same page and some of it's in fantasy worlds. And I've been there before and I'm saying this from someone that's been there. Like when someone's clearly not telling you, like they don't want a serious relationship, I've stayed to try to make something work where it's just an uphill battle. And I think we also need to recognize those situations, too, because, yes, if two people are fully in it trying to make it work, I agree with you. But a lot of times that's not the case. And it's like we have selective vision of what we want to see is happening. I wonder about that sometimes, right? Because our conversation today will be about your voluntary decision to leave a relationship. When should you leave and when should you stay? But in some situations, like in your previous relationship, you almost need something to happen or realize something for you to want to make that change. Yeah. And I have a friend currently in this situation. She just cannot see, although everybody around her sees that this relationship cannot last. I almost feel like she needs something externally to happen for her to like really see this clearly. Well, we're going to go through it today. We're excited to dig in very deep, because as you could already see, there's a lot of different scenarios. This is a very wide topic, but we're going to go there. But before we do, let's hear a message from our sponsors. This episode is brought to you by Drizzly. Tonight seems like a great night as any to wind down with some wine after a long day. We're also brought to you by the Ringer Podcast Network, where I put up a new rewatchables on Monday night. It was my birthday. So I decided to treat myself with one of my favorite movies, The Big Chill. Me, Sean Fantasy, Chris Ryan. It is basically the 40th anniversary of this movie as well. So that was a fun wrinkle. Plus my mom's favorite normal movie. And I actually asked my mom to come on this podcast. She turned me down, had no interest, said nobody wants to hear from her. I said, that's actually not true. People would love to hear your thoughts on The Big Chill. She said, no, I have not heard from her about the episode yet. I'm sure something made her mad, but I was very excited about this episode. It's almost two hours. We had a great time. So that's it for that. Next week, Kyle Brandt's coming on. And you know what happens when Kyle Brandt comes on. There's a specific type of movie we do. So I'll just leave you with that thought. You can get excited for the next six days. Coming up on this podcast, we're gonna talk to Big Waz about the Dame lowered trade saga, which has kept all of us hostage for the last three months. But now there's signs of light that something might happen. We're gonna talk about what we think is the single most fun team Dame can go to. So there's that. And then our old friend Mike Lombardi is going to stop by to talk about, um, the Dolphins and the Browns and Caleb Williams and all of the midweek football subplots that we find. So fascinating, really fun NFL season so far, by the way, I've been, been enjoying myself. I just realized that media day is coming for hoops on October 2nd. Rosillo and House and I are doing our annual over unders triple pot or however many parts that's going to be. That's going to be sometime in mid October. And I've done zero research. I have no NBA thoughts whatsoever. I've been just in football, football, football. So over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be, um, diving into the NBA as well. This is a very, very busy time, but also an unbelievable time if you love sports, which, uh, I still do somehow, um, very excited to see where this NBA season goes. I can't remember more teams either in flux or feeling a little worse than they did last year or feeling completely different than they did last year. I keep staring at the, the big slate, like, who do you love in the East? Like, who do you love in the West? Denver, maybe they're benches worse, but it's just a really hard one. Usually when we get to the end of September, we always think, all right, I feel really good about these three teams and I just don't feel that way yet. So maybe as I dive into the, uh, my whole research process, which by the way yielded for you guys, Denver in the finals last year, that was my big bet. Um, maybe as I throw myself into this process, I will, uh, I will have some, some dimes of knowledge for you in October. All right, we're going to, uh, start this podcast first, our friends from Pro Jet.

First pro jam. Let's get to it. All right, taping this a little after 8 .30, Sunday night Pacific time. The hardest word come in and show business is here. Cousin Sal just watched Pittsburgh Vegas, a bizarre game, but we're not starting there. We're starting with your team. You're stupid cowboys. You compliment me and now that I see what you did here. Okay, all right. Your stupid team that I thought I could throw into a little 11 and a half Arizona, like throw a bit. All they had to do was run by two and a half. I had a FanDuel boost. I had real life money. I had a million dollar pick and it's like, of course they'll beat the Cardinals by two and a half. Rahim thought the Cardinals were tanking. No, no, that's not what happened. And now you're containing cowboys. They couldn't even make it to my birthday before they fell apart. They couldn't even make it to the end of September. Was that the goal? I guess had they known your birthday was a Monday. Yeah, they might've stuck around. I know, I know. I don't know what to tell you. It sucked. I had it tied to everything too. I had an Oregon this and the Chiefs this and the 49ers and the Cowboys and everything. And I didn't even care that they had three, essentially three offensive linemen out or that Trayvon Diggs got hurt. Not that I didn't care, but I didn't think it would affect this game. And then they just got, they went out there and got their asses kicked. 13 penalties and didn't force any turnovers and couldn't do shit in the red zone. And of course it's a double digit loss, jerks. I kept, I had in the back of my head Rahim's theory that the Cardinals were tanking and that they were only playing one, a good first half. And then they would throw away the second half because their real goal is Caleb Williams. So at halftime, I'm like, I'm not going to panic yet. Maybe the Rahim's theory, no. The Rahim's theory was not true. The Cardinals actually played really well. And your team, I will say, look, this happens sometimes. Usually it doesn't happen in week three. It happens later in the year. But the team that is getting smoke blowing up their butts, they have this easy game and say, oh yeah, we're going to Arizona. It's going to be half Dallas fans. This will be a layup for us. So we've seen this scenario, just not this early in the season. What worried me though, from a Dallas standpoint, forget about the offensive line and the blocking stuff. Cause you'll get those guys back. But you do seem to have like third and seven, third and eight if Lamb is covered, where do you go issued? Like, you know, not everyone has the Kelsey type, but you don't have the Devontae Adams. You don't have really any of those guys. You don't have that big physical tight end in the middle. You don't have the awesome, you know, James White type third down running back who's going to get open. And you could really feel it in the red zone. They were one for five in the red zone today. Yeah. I mean, you know, what's his name? The tight end who went to Houston, I already forgot his name from Dallas last year, was our second lead. Schultz was our second leading receiver last year. So yeah, there is something to be said about that. And I do want to put it in proper perspective. If the Eagles lose to Tampa Bay, which is a possibility tomorrow, the week is a wash in the NFC East, right? That means everyone will have lost. So I don't want to get too crazy, but it did expose, you're right, everything I always worry about. Can Dak come up with a big play down the stretch? You know, are these injuries too much to overcome? And Mike McCarthy in that play calling, it really seemed like we were up 12 points trying to bleed the clock, not down 12 points. And it's like, oh, maybe he's just afraid to throw it. And then when we saw, he threw into three defenders and you cleverly quipped, how did they know which of the three were to intercept it? Yeah, that was kind of wrenching. That was an angry text to yours. I was just angrily texting. Like it was your fault that I was losing all my teases. Yeah, he just threw into three guys on one of the biggest plays of the game. Complete panic throw.

Paul Vato Presents: A Celebrity Centric Podcast!
A highlight from Exploring Art, Laughter and Resilience with Illustrator, Jason Seiler!
"Y en ese hombre, hold another bottle. Look a little closer, cigar and Moscato. An actor in improv coming from Chicago. Auto, make way for Paul Vato. Bravo, and welcome everybody to another episode of Palo Alto Presents. And today my very special guest is Jason Seiler, who, judging by your Instagram, instagram .com slash Seiler pants, you make pants. Oh yeah, yeah, I got mostly made in Wisconsin, yeah. Wisconsin, Wisconsin, China, Jaina, Jaina. No, it's Seiler Paints, Paints. Seiler Paints, I think I got the wrong guy. I need a pair of pants and I thought you could hook me up with a pair of pants, nevermind. Folks, I'm just kidding, of course. I'm not the pants guy. I'm not a pants guy either, now in the time of Zoom calls and COVID and whatnot. No need to wear pants. No. My guest is Jason Seiler, who paints. He's an illustrator, he's an artist. He does caricatures. He's done the cover of Time Magazine various times with people like the Pope. And who was your other cover that you did? I've done Trump and Pelosi and a bunch of other political people, Biden and Kamala, person of the year. I think I've done about 10 covers for Time. That is amazing, congratulations. So I thought I'd spend a few minutes talking to Jason about his art, talking to him about his standup comedy. And we have a connection in the world of standup comedy as well as the Chicago connection. So folks, please give Jason a very warm round of applause. And thank you, Jason, so much for being here. Thank you, thank you. Oh, nothing better than claps and laughter. That must be so different, the fact that you're getting claps and laughter on stage. Sure, that's almost not in fact, but that when you're painting or drawing it's such a solitude thing, that you go from one world to the other where you're very solitary and concentrating. Not that you don't in standup, but you're not getting that immediate reaction until afterwards while standup, you're getting it right away. You're getting the applause, you're getting the laughs and all that. And the groans. Well, a reaction is a reaction. I love it. Have you got any groans for your artwork? Oh yeah, yeah, I was just about to say, I do get reactions pretty quickly when I share work. It's kind of funny, because I have done a lot of political type work, but I can't stand politicians. The left or the right, they're all lunatics as far as I'm concerned. So I have no problem illustrating for anybody, because I don't have a horse in the race really. I don't worship politicians, let's put it that way. Every once in a while I'll paint a certain politician and I'm trying to take care of my family. It's my job, I'm painting to somebody and I will get the nastiest messages from people just angry so that I, how dare you even work for that publication or draw that person or whatever it is. I've gotten pretty serious. One time I painted the president of Iran, this was years ago and I got some serious, nasty messages from people trying to curse my family and writing me crazy things. I actually even got a care package in the mail from Iran. This was like 15 years ago and it freaked me out so much because it was just after I got all these threats. So I gave it to the police and to the FBI in Chicago. I just told my story and they took it and they came and got it, I don't even know what was in it. And then maybe, I don't know, like a month later, I got a call and they told me it was mixed nuts. It was a bag of mixed nuts. I thinking was that there was maybe gonna be like, man, those are some delicious Persian cookies. Yeah. But sorry, you didn't want, but same thing, mixed nuts. But then I found out from someone from Iran that that's actually like a gift of love or whatever, like that's a common thing to be, so it was probably a fan, but it still weird me out. I was like, okay, I don't know. People are saying death to you and your family, here's some nuts, enjoy. Maybe they thought you had a peanut allergy, so maybe it wasn't. He's American, send him some gluten, that'll kill him. Send him some gluten and a shoe. We couldn't throw it at you, but here it is. No, until somebody's paying your mortgage and your rent or your bills, they can't exactly tell you how to do it, but that's the thing, you're not a hypocrite. You're only going like, oh, I'm only drawing Republicans or I'm only drawing Democrats. You're going across the board and all showcasing your beautiful talents and artwork, so you can't let that, of course, stop you, and it hasn't, so that's wonderful. It is a little bit tricky because there's some artists that I know that only will work for the left, and then they criticize me if I do anything for a right -wing publication. But the thing is that I don't illustrate something if I don't, if it's over the line in any way that I don't, otherwise, mostly it's just like, whatever. There's a story about this person and I'm just doing a painting of them. Chill out. I'm recording history, okay? This is something that is happening right now, and whether you like it or not, that person exists, and recording I'm history with my painting. That's basically, and I'm also taking care of my family and doing what I love, so chill out. Yeah, agreed, and that is 100%. You're not doing the political commentary. No. You're just doing a painting for whatever article that is, be it right, left, so no, I don't think that you should ever, of course, need to explain yourself. I know that we're just dialoguing, but no, you can't listen to what other people say. And then, I'm friends with a pretty well -known cartoonist and he's very left -wing. His name's Lalo Alcaraz. He's an award -winning cartoonist, and I co -hosted the show Pocha Hour of Power with him on KPFK in LA, as you know, that's very left -wing radio. And he, you know, he'll go at both sides, but he really, of course, goes after the right, and especially Trump and whatnot, but I think he would appreciate your work because we also know people on both sides of the aisle, and yeah, that's just incredible. You're taking shit from all sides. And even in comedy, too, like I don't really get into politics too much in comedy because it just divides the room right away, but I like to make fun of myself or kind of make fun of both sides at the same time, you know what I mean? Like making fun of Trump and Biden together, you know what I mean? Like that's more fun to me, like if it's a fun joke, but yeah, it's different with the illustration because it's, you know, a client will call me and tell me like someone they want me to paint. They'll tell me the story. If it's a caricature -type editorial illustration where they're like wanting me to draw a situation, if it was something that I didn't agree with, I just wouldn't do it, and I've done that before. I'm like, eh, I don't really want to do that. And that's fine. They'll find someone else. But mostly it's just in the last three years or so with the heightened wokeness thing that's been going on where people are seeing them being a little bit more sensitive about things, that caricature, which is what I've been doing since I was like nine, 10 years old, has not been used as much in editorial work. And I've actually been called out a few times now for doing caricature that I'm a bully, that it's mean, and that they're like, how could you do that to people? And it's just like, it's ridiculous. And it's funny because it really, the caricature illustration and comedy, it's always been like very similar to me. The difference is when I do comedy, people go to the show to see comedy. So I actually feel like I have way more freedom to express myself. And it's like, hey, shut the fuck up. You decided to come to a comedy show. So get over it. But like with the art, it's like you're kind of just putting it out there and then anybody feels like they can say and they know what they want. And now everyone has access to tell you what they think. So it's a - Of course, of course. Yeah, everyone's got a platform. Now you're saying that you're being called a bully or you might be because you're exaggerating features of people's faces? Because I think that's what caricature is, correct? I mean - Oh yeah. There's been people that take it in that way, that like, I've been called a bully basically, which is kind of crazy. Cause it's like, they look at what I'm doing as super mean or that's like insensitive or racist or whatever, just as like, because of how I draw somebody and it's like, no, that's what they look like. It looks more like them than a photo sometimes. A good caricature. It really can capture someone's essence. But I've definitely noticed in the last few years, this shift in this, like people are like walking on eggshells about everything. So - Yeah. We especially notice it in comedy or satire and whatnot, you know, but I hear you. So keep fighting the good fight. Now you mentioned you take commissions. Now, if I wanted you to draw either myself or something for a book, that's a project that you would possibly take on, you would consider? Oh yeah. Yeah. I'm a freelance artist. So if you have monies, I provide the honeys. You know? Yeah. Yeah. Because I was going to offer, you know, I'd love for you to draw me. It'll bring you great exposure. I feel like a lot of people make that offer. Like, oh please, you know, do work for me. And you'll get a good exposure. So sorry, but I can't tell that to my mortgage company or my landlord. Do you charge different rates, say for individuals versus like corporations, like to draw the cover of Time Magazine, do you have a set rate? Is it the same as other artists? And you know, if this is proprietary knowledge, then by all means, you don't have to share it. But I think people would be very interested to know what can an artist make? Obviously you've dedicated what, 20 plus years to your craft? Well, yeah, I mean, it's different how it works. Because basically from magazine to magazine, the way it works usually is they have like a set amount for cover or for spot illustrations, inside the illustrations. And they offer you the job, you either take it or you don't. You know, so that's usually how that works. And a magazine cover can be anywhere from, you know, 1 ,800 to 2 ,800 to 3 ,500. It depends on who it is. And then it varies for different other projects. Like I recently did background paintings for an upcoming Disney movie. And that was different. That was more of, I got paid every two weeks. And so I had a set amount where I was paid. And so it's never the same. Like sometimes I do, sometimes for clients or for private commissions, I'll do a day rate, you know, which is usually I'll charge like 1 ,000 to 1 ,200 for a day rate. And so it just depends on what the project is and also, especially if it's a private commission, I usually, I ask for like half upfront for something like that. And then because I'm also taking on, you know, editorial work while I'm doing that, you know, so it really just depends. That's, it's not, there's not like a set thing. Yeah, I mean, and it's different also for, because when I do my editorial work, I work digitally, but when I do private commissions, well, I also work digitally for that as well, but sometimes I'll do oil paintings, gouache or things like that. Those will cost a lot more because they're traditional and they're huge and they take a long time. So that's, you know, again, it's all over the place. So it depends on what it is. Like if it's an album cover, let's say I've done a few album covers before, that can be a lot more than like a book cover or, but in the industry itself, there's not like a set thing, you know. Wonderful, well, thank you for sharing because I think that we get a lot of listeners that are getting into the arts or enjoy the arts or artists themselves. And I think that's one of the important things is, you know, monetization and can I make a living at this? So thank you for being free with your information and sharing, so much appreciated. And then how did you get into standup comedy? It's kind of crazy, but we kind of have a connection. You mentioned Steve Byrne before, but basically, so I've always wanted to do comedy. Ever since I was a little kid, I know he's not so popular right now, but Bill Cosby was my favorite comedian. When I was a kid, I would watch it over and over and over again. And as I got older, I just, you know, every comedian show I could see, I would watch. Saturday Night Live, anything comedy. And then of course I was really into Mad Magazine and that kind of stuff. So it's always been a huge part of my life. And I've always, I wasn't really like a class clown. I was definitely a weird, quirky artist guy that loved to make people laugh. And I would be silly with my friends and I always wanted to get people to laugh. Like it was, I would, you know, whether I was like walking, I used to sometimes for just for fun, I would walk around my high school like Charlie Chaplin. And I would just do the Chaplin walk for hours. Like I was just weird, I don't know. Like I've always just loved comedy. And then as I got older, I moved to Chicago when I was 18 and I joined, I was in a bunch of punk bands and metal, like hardcore bands really. And so I spent years touring and putting out albums with bands. And then eventually I quit and focused like on my art full time.

Some of the wall was up there and it would be laying on the ground rusted rotten steel, rusted rotten wood, and what the radical left crazy Democrats did. If there's a piece of wood laying down, they consider that a wall. I built because this is the game. They're a party of disinformation. In the ReliefFactor .com studios, here's Mike. Welcome back to the ReliefFactor .com studio. I'm your guest host Carl Jackson sitting in with the great Mike Gallagher and Joe in Kentucky, Louisville. I'll be going to you in just a second here. If you want to call into the program 1 -800 -655 -MIKE. 1 -800 -655 -MIKE. I just want to comment on that video, the last video that you saw on SalemNewsChannel .com with former President Donald Trump in that CNN town hall that he did with the lady that just got taken to school even though she tried to take him to school. That was so annoying. I could barely take that interview. Do you realize the Biden administration, a lot of that new material that we purchased, they've literally sold a lot of it off. They've sold it off. Even to try to rebuild and keep in mind when Trump says rebuild, a lot of the wall was being fortified. He didn't literally build hundreds of miles worth of wall, unfortunately. I wish he had the left and unfortunately some rhinos did everything they could to slow the border issue down. That's something that has to be started all over virtually again with the exception of the 40 plus miles that were added because the Biden administration literally are continuing to sell off some of the material. Some of the some of the material is just setting still not doing anything but they're selling it off. They did they did the same thing as a matter of fact with material from the Keystone XL pipeline. Just so you know how evil and disgusting and despicable the Biden administration and his leading up to this and this show. I'm going to show you how and thank you Tracy for reminding me the the woman was Robin from Hawaii from the state of Hawaii. I don't recall what island and and Derek you're right. I think more more people need to read the left so we understand what the left is doing so that we're not fighting so harshly against each other because I really do believe and I understand you want Trump to win. I got it. Fight for him like heck and you should and you should but there's a mistake I believe in sabotaging Adron DeSantis. I think there's a mistake in in in in saying nobody else should compete in the race and I'm not going to lie with you lie to you. I I don't want a lot of those people on the stage. The only people frankly that I care about and I know I'm going to offend some people out there are Trump DeSantis and Larry Elder and I'll tell you why and and I want to bring I want to bring I'll tie all this together. I promise you and Joe I promise you I'll get to Joe and Louisville, Kentucky. I'll be coming to you because you got an important call here that I that I want to take on but there's a reason why I I say Trump DeSantis and Larry Elder and I'm okay with those three. I'm okay with those three hashing it out. Now I do live in Realville you know Rush Limbaugh was the mayor of Realville. If I'm looking at the polls even though I I know that the polls are skewed I know that the polls are wrong I still know that Trump has a humongous lead over everyone. That is clear even in state polling that is very clear so it is more than likely that Trump will be the GOP nominee unless there's fewer people. I'm a selfish person. I like we the people. I realize that Trump if he gets in he gets four years and I'm sitting there thinking okay we need to win 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040. How do we do all this? How do how do we do all this? If if you think that it's going to be a four -year plan we're going to somehow turn America around in four years you're sadly mistaken. You're just you're you're sadly mistaken. The DOJ issue is the biggest issue in my opinion out there. The way that the DOJ the FBI how they've been utterly corrupted is the biggest issue but there's something I got to share with you. Unfortunately the DOJ and the FBI being corrupted just shows us that we're too late to the party so it is the biggest issue out there but unfortunately all of the other issues that preceded that in order to create a corrupt DOJ a corrupt FBI we're late to the party. I believe that Trump is better when it comes to that stuff right DOJ stuff and all that man he just I think he'll go in and just wreck shop. I love that. I think I think Trump is better instinctively with foreign policy. He's just honestly he changed my views on some foreign policy stuff and that I absolutely love and adore adore him for. I love his sheer tenacity force of will but I'll be straight with you when it comes to the stuff leading up to DOJ and Ron DeSantis is better and I don't care if you like that or not he's got an instinct for that. You don't have to you can whine like little girls on the left you can lie about it you can deny it you can do what some conservative columnists and and and influencers have been done uh doing that all of a sudden DeSantis is the worst but no I'm sorry he's our second best guy and I don't think it's even close and I think you're playing a seriously dumb game if you try to sabotage them. I think you're an idiot. I think you're a fake MAGA person and I don't think you're out for the country. I think you're out for yourself if you're trying to sabotage our second best guy. I just opinion for the betterment of America. You're an idiot. I want to make it completely and emphatically clear because this is not a one election game. We've come to the party way too late. Ron DeSantis' instincts on cultural Marxism and what led up to the DOJ corruption I'm sorry he's been better than Trump on that. When it comes to the issue of COVID I'm sorry I see all of the naysayers oh well Ron DeSantis is lying he did this he did these are the the whiners these these are the guys in the MAGA movement that need testosterone uh oh Ron DeSantis he's lying about you know he was he he was what are they saying oh he he locked down Florida and guys I live in Florida yes he followed orders just like everybody else but you had what's what's her name Kristi uh and I'm missing someone the lady in Iowa that were very strong on COVID but once DeSantis backed out of COVID he was better than anybody else by far by far it wasn't even close it showed me that he was instinctually getting stuff and he was strong enough to say whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa wait a minute here's what's going on now and he wasn't falling to the pressure so that's why I want to see Trump on stage because as much as I love Trump and we've got a video here saying don't comply with COVID well I'm sorry I love Trump I love Trump but I'm we the people first I want Trump to tell me what he learned so that he does about COVID uh and and the deep state so he never gets duped again when he's in office that's what I want to know I deserve that as a voter you may not want that that's up to you but I'm a we the people person I want that because you know what I don't have the resources to fight against the deep state I don't have them if they lock me up I'm gone away forever you're never going to hear me again so I'm pretty selfish I want to stay out of prison I don't want to be the proud boys guy that I'm gonna that I'm going to talk about uh later Larry Elder the reason why I want him is simple in my opinion Larry Elder is a better communicator than DeSantis he's a better communicator uh than than Trump and I think he can communicate those ideas better than them and even to minority voters I think he can communicate our ideas better to minority voters than DeSantis and Trump can so I figure let them fight it out I think Trump is going to win but let them fight it out because you know why with those three I think we the people win and the left is an isolated on Donald Trump where they can just aim all right so take everybody out of the race let let's take everybody out of the race and let's just let the DOJ the FBI the the mainstream media big tech every look at everything that has been unleashed on Trump now let's get everybody out of the way so they can just completely focus on him you know what Ron DeSantis is do you know what Larry Elder and I pray to God Larry Elder gets on the stage larryelder .com do you know what they are they are an insurance policy I'm sorry I love Tim Scott I love Tim Scott I think Larry Elder is a better candidate than Tim Scott so I hope to God that he gets on the stage all right because I want to hear them debate but they're an insurance policy you know why the left is scared to get rid of Biden those that are Kamala Harris I had somebody messaged me yesterday uh Carl I love you on the show but I disagree with you on this part the impeachment thing because Kamala Harris the left has no problem throwing black people under the bus even a black woman they will throw her under the bus quick fast and in a hurry she's an insurance policy for Biden you know who's an insurance policy because I read them all the time I'm just telling you the truth you don't have to believe it you don't have to agree with it I don't necessarily agree with it but when I read the left when I read the radical left the person who they fear the most is DeSantis whether you like it or not doesn't mean that it's true that is their perception because they believe that DeSantis is Trump not charismatic but will get crap done when he came in the office that's true I don't believe DeSantis at this point I mean unless he gets a one -on -one and there's a miracle that he's going to win the primary but I tell you the left yes they fear Trump but they also fear DeSantis why would you take the guy the second guy that they fear out and try to sabotage them the those of you that are doing that and and I'll say it maybe I'm sabotaging my career today you're complete and utter idiots and I don't believe you're MAGA I believe you're just you're I believe you're just what what's the word I just believe you're grifters I believe you just want to follow the crowd I don't believe you're for the betterment of America I don't believe you're for the empowerment of we the people I think you're full of crap to be frank with you this is Carl Jackson and for Mike Gallagher -655 -Mike 1 -800 -655 -6453 thank you Tracy uh callers if you want to call back the lines are good apparently uh the uh callers were in some areas where the phones just weren't okay all right they're rebooting the phones right now so 1 -800 -655 -Mike 1 -800 -655 -6453 let me let me let me play an audio clip for you I think this is uh this is very interesting to me I'm actually surprised to to hear this but that's Derek Klingle being on it I want to go to Tucker Tucker says I agree and I quote I agree 100 after guest says uh Trump and Biden are too old to be president here's audio clip number two I'm actually kind of surprised to hear this but let's roll it uh I think both Trump and Biden are too old I think there should I don't think you should be able to be that old and be president uh but I think Trump trying to be a hundred percent more aware I I think Biden has got some serious dementia issues I'm I'm actually surprised to hear that I I can't uh I did not know he said listen I I do believe that there should be an age limitation that we we talked about this yesterday I do think that there should be some type of cognitive test obviously if you look at uh Trump he's he's I think he's 77 or 78 years old the guy acts like he's probably 60 I mean it's it's absolutely insane and then you look at Biden and it's simply not the same but I I do believe there needs to be some cognitive test and perhaps there does need to be an age limit at some point uh but I'm wishy -washy on that I'll admit I'm not a term limit guy I know a lot of people want term limits listen I just think evil people do evil things they'll just figure out how to do evil things even more quickly I think we need to leave a move a lot of these people out of Washington D .C.

A highlight from MARKETS DAILY: Crypto Update | Bitcoin Jumps to $26.5K as Trading Volume Increases
"This episode of Markets Daily is sponsored by Kraken. It's Thursday, August 24th, 2023, and this is Markets Daily from CoinDesk. Hi, I'm Michelle Musso here with your crypto markets roundup. On today's show, we're talking Bitcoin, FTX, Trump, NFTs and more. And just a reminder, CoinDesk is a new source and does not provide investment advice. Bitcoin jumps to $26 ,500 as trading volume increases. In the midst of a discernible market trajectory, Bitcoin exhibited a substantial surge this morning, experiencing an ascent of nearly 5 % at one point, with its valuation nearing the threshold of $26 ,800. This commendable incline ran in parallel with a resurgence observed in traditional markets, accompanying the receding position of interest rates. Ethereum is up as well, with a boost to almost 2%, floating steadily at $1 ,671, respectively. LMAX Digital, an institutional cryptocurrency exchange, noted a significant increase in trading volume, stating in a Monday note today, Bitcoin volumes printed $173 million, 59 % above a 30 -day average volume, and Ether volumes printed at $92 million, 70 % above a 30 -day average volume. LMAX said that the uptick for Bitcoin's price in trading volumes stems from traditional markets, continuing, with stocks rallying and the U .S. dollar selling off, cryptocurrencies were able to benefit. While Bitcoin, BTC, and Ether, ETH, have chalked out moderate gains in the past 24 hours, prices remain well below levels that are likely to inflict maximum pain on buyers of August's expiry option contracts. A note to make here is the max pain levels for BTC and ETH settlements are currently at $28 ,000 and $1 ,800, respectively. It is being reported that there will be 72 ,000 BTC August option contracts valued at $1 .9 billion and 535 ,000 Ethereum option contracts valued at $893 million, settled on Friday by Deribit, the world's leading crypto options exchange by volume and open interest. Moving to Ether, the U .S. dollar value locked in the active Ether perpetual futures contracts listed on Binance has tanked to a 13 -month low. The so -called notional open interest was $1 .41 billion at press time, the lowest since July 2022, according to data tracked by CoinGlass. According to data tracked by South Korea -based analytics firm CryptoQuant, Ether's global estimated leverage ratio has declined from a multi -month high of 0 .28 to 0 .22. Bitcoin's ratio has slid from 0 .27 to 0 .21, the lowest since May. This is calculated by dividing the dollar value locked in the active open perpetual futures contracts by the total number of coins held by derivative exchanges. This current display indicates a notable reduction in the level of leverage employed to enhance returns, in stark contrast to the situation a mere week prior. The shift also suggests a diminished probability of volatility induced by liquidations in the ensuing weeks. Today's market updates come from coindesk Lilliladezma and Omkar Gebole. Stay tuned for after the break when we'll take a look at FTX and Trump NFTs.

Homeowners insurance isn't cheap, but it's one of those purchases many of us make and then forget about. We just let the policy renew year after year. Insurance companies are counting on that. If you want to get the best deal on home insurance, you need to shop around every few years. Checkbook researchers, we've been shopping for rates for decades now, and we always find that most of us can save hundreds of dollars each year and some homeowners can save $1 ,500 a year simply by switching to a lower -cost company. Kevin Brasler is Checkbook's executive editor. Now it's kind of a pain to do this shopping around. The price comparison websites that are out there that promise to do all this work for you don't really work well at all. So to really shop around, you'll have to sit for a few hours and collect rates and maybe talk to a few agents. I always say it's like doing your taxes except after you've taken a few hours to shop, you'll probably find that you can save $500 or more per year and sometimes a lot more than that simply by taking some time and shopping around for better rates. That's worth

Telling someone that scenario. My sister is 19 and old enough to take care of herself. I'm 24 have always kind of looked out for her. It's hard to let her go, especially when I see her making mistakes in doing things that could hurt her. Lately, she started dating one of my friends, and this guy is a player. I mean, he has been with a lot of women. In fact, he knows his number. It's over 50. He's a lover, man. Leave them type of guy and has no interest in a long term relationship. Especially I bet you with my sister. He's a good guy and a good friend, but he just loves to hook up with other women. So I told my sister about him and she's furious at me. But it got worse because she told my friend and I told her now he's angry at me, too. And now she wants to date this guy even more so. I feel like I've lost my sister and my friend, and I don't know what to do to fix either relationship. How can I make this right and get back? Get things back to normal? "I know You mentioned the free press. You believe that. There's several references to the how valuable free press can be. Maybe the blue wig was part of the the free press. I'm not. I'm not sure. But how can people use can actually do that brian. How can people us do what you did. News the press for free advertising and marketing. I mean in my w t.f. willing to sail. There's plenty of examples of it which some fun stories we tell. That are a little more people can do it. But i think off the top of mind. One one of my favorites is the blue eggs to me. Those free press that was guerrilla marketing because of our blue wigs. We got in sixty media outlet We got sixty media pieces in a very short period of a couple of weeks. We said our local hockey team the vancouver knox's going off to the playoffs for the first time in a long time. We're gonna rally behind them. We're going to start to wear blue wigs in the company. We are going to get out there and give up blue wigs and it was just fun quirky way of supporting them and it took off. We had the press coming into our office. We'd be at hockey games. And we have three different representatives from the company at the same time when the the three different. Six o'clock news channels live doing remotes. We were on the front page of our local paper with the one. Eight hundred got junk name brand. All these people and blue wigs and it was people would say it's a publicity stunt heck yeah. We were supporting the local hockey team. And we got a ton of press out of it and rallied people around this fun movement of just culture so people can do little things as wigs. Were three bucks a piece and they weren't super expensive. We gave out a thousand of them inside the stadium three grand and we got hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of free. Press so figure out what you can do that stands out in the world to get noticed to share a story in a in a viral ish. Type away first Sentence in your book is says. I wrote this book to encourage you and the book title being willing to fail or wto kind of interesting as well but It seems like you pick up a book all willing to fail and then the first line is i wrote this book to encourage you. It's i don't know right away. It kind of got my attention as being different right. Because i know i didn't know what to expect when i picked it up but i thought and you do tell a lot of stories about how you know you've you've you in. The organization have overcome challenges. How does failure encourage you. I guess that's what i'm interest interested in. I don't know if it's failure encourages me. But i wanted to encourage others. That failure is okay. Go out in fail my story. I tell not in the book but just a simple story to help illustrate failure as my my middle daughter At the time was probably eight. Nine years old was coming back from ski school and she was in tears and didn't want to go the next day. I hate skiing. It's cold my fall all the time and i go you fall fall all the time and i'm like that's awesome..

"It's an incredibly important part of any business. So it started with us having our trucks with the big one. Eight hundred got junk phone number blazoned on the side today. We have thousands of trucks big mobile billboards essentially and we do it with every business while and dan shack shine. It's you can see the brand front and center there parked in high visibility locations and people see them so often that they feel like we're everywhere and they give us a call so brand awareness radio We've got a fellow named the wizard of ads. roy williams who's been fantastic friend and mentor and partner in the business. Who's helped us build this radio awareness with our one eight hundred got junk brand that people just can't compete with. I mean i people tell me all the time like they can't tune my voice out. I feel bad but it's true and he's done a great job helping us build that so i think marketing in my mind is an always on engine that you just go go go you use the power of free press to tell the story you use digital social media where we are in the storytelling age. Just look at any social media platform today. What are you seeing. What are you reading and hearing about nothing but stories people's individual stories..

"And that's been very powerful for us. We want to be coaching. And developing our franchise owners to get out of the trucks to get off to ladders and to start really building teams of people and a great brand in their market. And it's the recipe that really helps to set people off on the right trajectory. So is that book part of your training process for for your teams or have you created sort of your own e meth For your brand. Yeah it's a philosophy that we want people to adopt and understand so we talk about it constantly. We asked people to read it. I wouldn't say it's a formal part of our training program but it's definitely you can see e myth woven through our entire fabric of our of our company. Okay and i mentioned at the beginning that the united heard you on wanna joe polishes podcast and maybe it was genius marketing genius network or whatever. It's called. I know from reading your book and from listening to that that marketing you know has been a huge part of what's helped grow your businesses and you know. Interestingly for a guy that you know sort of started by seeing a truck you know. Mcdonald's drive through and you know saying why can do that. Maybe those kinds of people which you probably aren't. But i am those kinds of sort of people. Maybe aren't always thinking about how they can market their way to grow their business. You know the kind of there's a lot of people who think well. If i just do a good job people hear about me. And they'll referred me in that kind of stuff but you think differently about that. Tell me the question again. Sorry disturbed refine. Yeah just just just how you think about marketing. How you've decided how. I started thinking about marketing and how marketing has be you know played a role. I guess a big role in developing your business and your franchises know brands can't grow without marketing. You know how do people hear about you. You go to market. You spread the word of your customers. Spread the word..

"The wrong franchise owners especially there's many of them. You can't get them out your business. Implodes a franchise organization implodes much more quickly underneath the weight of everything. That isn't working if you bring in the wrong people. And it's very challenging to get the wrong franchise owners out. You can beg and plead. But you know unless you're going to buy them out for large sums of money. It can be a big challenge. So a certain amount of getting lucky persevering working through the model but it was anything but easy. I mean it was quite. The opposite was very very hard. It took us probably ten years before we started. Having enough critical mass where we were making money and the royalty started to manifest into a successful profitable business and But certainly glad. I made the move. And it's because i'm also long term thinker wasn't doing this to get rich quick wasn't even doing this to get rich of his doing this because i love watching things grow and It's been just a fun. Amazing model for me and for people is there like a. I'm assuming there's a formula for businesses that can be franchised or at least that's your thought process but but i'm just wondering is there a formula or can really any business be franchised if You know you do it the right way. And there's a market for the service or the pride in its essence is very simple. The look at sports franchises look at the nhl hockey. You are allowing someone to start a team in your league for you. Know hundreds of millions of dollars But you're saying here's the system. Here's the rules in which will abide by its. Here's a recipe. Now go follow it. Mcdonald's here's how we cooked the burgers. Here's how we do the fries. Here's where we buy our supplies. You've gotta follow the recipe. So i think anything that can have a level of consistency to set some rules. Rigor and discipline.

"Yeah i think so i. It was me really taking these people. I was working with franchise partners and saying where am i willing to give flexibility in. Where aren't i so creating a system of business process like mcdonald's. You expect things to be done a certain way where he willing to compromise. Mcdonald's probably allows you to they probably would never allow you to change their logo. Their colors their brand. Same with one. Eight hundred got junk or any of our brands but where mcdonald's might give flexibility as the volunteer work people do in the community or the way that people recruit and train. some of their employees into the business the culture that they create in their own environment. We've got plenty of different things that we allow flexibility on. I didn't want control anything. The one thing. I wanted to control still to this day is the vision. I want the i want. Wanna be the creator of the vision of where our brands are going. So when i say wow one day painting and that our business model is going in and flash mob painting. Someone's home in a day. I don't want as has happened. People have said we can't do it in a day. This is hurting us. We have to change the model. It's gotta be. There's gotta be some flexibility. I held fast to it and said no. This is the way we're doing it. And that's the vision. I want and people have come around to see. Wow this is magic we can do it in a day without compromising speed and quality so franchising is a great model to say. I'm going to create the recipe alongside of my franchise owners and then we're gonna really hold to accountability to follow that recipe and system. It isn't my recipe any longer. It's one created by all of our founding partners and it gets better and better and we all win as a result of having a business business model that has been created in tweet to be the best it can be by all of us by the way that. Wow one day painting when i read about that in the book. Because i hadn't..

"Replicate things So that every time you experience the company it's the same or that's the goal at least for it to be the same. When was it. That what will i guess why you're doing pretty well. It seems like expanding regionally and internationally you know even going coming into the us what what changed your mind on business model. Yeah good question. I a few things number one is again. I loved ray kroc model because he had owners who were his partners that he had skin in the game with these people where they weren't just managers of a region. The restaurant they were people who could build something bigger with him and we talk about something at ocho libra ans- very often we call it bigger and better together. We believe in building something much bigger and better together versus what any one of us would ever choose to do alone. So i love the franchise model in decided to test it out. I had paul guy who ran my vancouver operations who also helped me launch seattle. He really knew what he was doing. He had a girlfriend in toronto. Said listen you're spending so much time in toronto. Why don't you move there. What do you think taking the first franchise. And of course he did and he saw the same spark of possibility that i did and off he went took a truck and drove it from vancouver to toronto thousands of kilometers away and started the first business. And the deal. Was i'll give you the franchise. He's the only person that's never paid a full franchise fee. Didn't pay any fee. I said you take the franchise. I'll help support you. You help teach me how to support franchise partners and the magic was was born. That's what every franchise partner in our system wanted to follow. Even someone today in shock shine. Says i want to be like paul guy you know. He has built a sixty million dollar empire with his group of one. Eight hundred got junk franchises. People.

"Initial company one eight hundred got junk. But i'm curious before we go there. The rubbish boys. How did you did was there. A lot of Bantering around about what a good name would be or. Was it something that you just pulled out of your head right off the bat or yeah. There was a tv show at the time called thirty. Something which was a show about a couple of ad execs and their company was called the ad boys and so it just inspired me. I was like oh there. We go what am i doing. I'm not advertising. I'm hauling away trash. We are the rubbish voice and A lot of people said it would make a good name for a band. We didn't keep the company name because eight years into the business. I wanted to expand into the united states. And i knew that the word rubbish was much more of a british canadian term and wanted something different. That would stand out so we came up with this one. Eight hundred got junk which was a bit of a play on or inspiration from the got milk campaign in the united states years ago and so we became one. Eight hundred got junk and wasn't there Wasn't the phone number taking or something. Brian i think i remember you talking about. It's kind of. It's kind of interesting story about how well you have. A whole thing about you know knows not taking knows you know in the book but But you wanted to. You wanted to certain number. And it wasn't available as i as i recall. Yeah well we wouldn't you try and get an eight hundred number. There's very few of them and you can imagine. Even twenty years ago when is trying to get the phone number. It was were more than twenty years ago. It was a challenge. I came up with this idea of one. Eight hundred got junk than i. Pick up the phone. Call the number and it's taken now. It said the recording said the phone number is not available in your area because it was available in different area and i had to find out what area that was i had friends in the united states. Make phone calls and try and figure out what state this was working from. I finally found out in my research. My detective work that it was in the state of idaho and it was the department of transportation in idaho that on this phone number and why they give it to me. I made phone call after phone call in the book. I talk about the power of no reference..
