A highlight from Episode 16 The Drama of Atheist Humanism Fr. Joseph Fessio S.J., Vivian Dudro, and Joseph Pearce FBC Podcast
"Welcome to the Forum Book Club, or hopefully welcome back because we're towards the middle, beyond the middle of this wonderful book, the drama of atheist humanism by Father Amiri Dubac. And we spend a lot of time on it. It's a long book, but it's full of a lot of very interesting material and insights. And we're now talking about Nietzsche as a prophet, which is chapter... Sorry, Dostoevsky. Dostoevsky is a prophet. Did I say Nietzsche? I'm sorry. Dostoevsky is a prophet. He talked about Nietzsche, Feuerbach, Marx, and Kant as figures in the 19th century who attempted different forms of an atheist humanism, that is, how to enhance man's life by taking God out of the picture. And, excuse me, Dostoevsky is the one who shows that won't work. And we're in chapter two of the section Dostoevsky's Prophet, and Dubach is talking about three kinds of atheism that Dostoevsky is responding to. We talked about the first one, the God -man. We've got the Nietzschean Superman and Obermann. We're on the second one, which is the Tower of Babel, the idea of creating a society without God. The third one will be the House of Glass and the philosophical atheism. So we are on, by my count, on page 325, I thought we got to the Palace of Glass. Am I wrong? I didn't too. I thought we got to the palace. We left off to go to the Palace of Glass next. All right. I'm wrong. I marked it down wrong. That's 334, father. Hey, tell that on tape my saying I'm wrong, but there it is. So what page are we on then? I think page 334. Yeah, that's it. Okay. Joseph, take it away. Okay. Well, just one thing. I think somewhere in the dim recesses of my aging memory, I did know this. I had read this somewhere before, but I'd forgotten. So it was good to be reminded that Vladimir Slovyev, who's often called the Russian Newman, and of course, eventually a convert to Catholicism, which again is itself intriguing considering Kostornyev has his own anti -Catholicism. So on page 334, he says he took an interest in Slovyev's lectures. And then we have the footnote 57, the young philosopher, that's obviously Slovyev and the novelist had been friends since 1873. And then we have, this is Dostoevsky, I am weak in philosophy, but not in the love I have for it. I am strong in the love I have for it. So I just find that sort of something which indles my heart. So to think that there was this affinity between Dostoevsky and this great Russian philosopher who'd become pre -Catholic, often called the Russian Newman, Vladimir Slovyev. I want to just mention that. Okay, that's like someone saying Jesus is weak in theology because he tells stories. But you know, I think Dostoevsky is strong in philosophy, you know, intuitively. He expresses it, you know, in images and in narratives.

The largest cryptocurrency fell under $26 ,000. In the past 24 hours, majors Solana and Litecoin dropped as much as 5 .5%, while Ether lost 3 .7%. Only Tron and TonCoin were in the green on Friday, up over 1 % each. In the immediate aftermath of the Friday morning release of the Bureau of Labor Statistics report, Bitcoin bulls might be looking to a softening in the economy and thus lower interest rates as a possible catalyst for market action. The Nottingham Cheese Riot of 1766
"It all started at the nottingham goose fair a traveling carnival dating back a thousand years. Maybe more that visited the area every october back then instead of rides or games of chance. The goose fair was mainly a food festival. It began as a livestock market. Where animals of all kinds including geese were traded among fair goers over time it branched out into other kinds of food as well but especially cheese in fact it became a primary reason. People attended the fair but never more important than in seventeen sixty six you see in the months leading up to the event. A poor harvest threatened europe with a nationwide food shortage. People were scared in the markets reacted. Accordingly high demand resulted in skyrocketing prices flour wheat corn and yes cheese. All saw an uptick in prices prices. That were beyond what most people could afford. But when the nottingham goose fair came around that year the prices weren't the only things. Rising tempers had gotten pretty heated to just one week earlier cheese had been selling for anywhere between fourteen and twenty two shillings per one hundred weights at coventry markets. The following week the goose fair saw prices double by today's standards that put the cost of cheese at nearly two hundred pounds too pricey for locals just trying to get by adding insult to injury. There was more cheese present at this fair than in previous years. All of it's just out of reach from almost everyone in attendance. Things came to a head on october second. When a group of merchants from nearby lincolnshire traveled to nottingham. They had come to buy hundreds of pounds of cheese which they plan to sell in their own county but the locals didn't take too kindly to having their cheese bought by out of towners only to be sold elsewhere. They were hungry and desperate. A group of young men stopped the merchants on the road surrounding their caravan offering an ultimatum. Either shared their cheese with everyone else or get. The cheddar kicked out of them. A fight broke out shortly after that. With a mob of fed up fair goers taking their anger out on the local shops they broke windows and liberated hundreds of cheese wheels rolling them into the streets and hurling them out into open

"Times have changes a little bit, just Dutilleux constraints. I mean, think about that. Now, that would not happen. Building a second unit on a house in today's market, You know, it's gonna take a lot more time just to do you know, obviously labor and the shortage of materials. So, Jerry, I'm gonna long run this topic of rental property. So we have a lot of are long time clients who basically are the same age. I turn 62 later this year, and I'm going to take myself security next year. So you know, I just like him want to travel? I want to do things. I'll still be doing my real estate. But, um, s O. We have AH, client, a mutual client that that's much younger than I am. And he's Own several of his properties here in town for 4 to 5 years and, um, But even with him, it's like it's time to rotate. Rotate stock like there's one property that It's worth about $400,000, but he's got 200,000 of equity and this property and your rate of return and goes. Yeah, I love that property. It makes 1300 a month. That's like Yeah, but does it By the time you set aside that 1300 some of it over time, you'll have a vacancy and over time you'll have some repairs. So you really need to set aside at least $75 a door on a three plex. That's $225. And then your rents are roughly $2000. So you need to set aside 5% every month for the day when you do have a vacancy, So that's $100 of your rent that you should keep in your slush fund account. And that way every month you're putting in $325. And then when something needs fixing you have the money, right? You don't have to scramble. And so when you point it out like that, and you say, Well, Okay, Now you're 1300 just went below 1000. You know you're you're like 9 50. What? If a friend's increase? We believe rents are going to continue to increase. So you on the street place? When Rins go up. Let's just say $100 over the next couple of years. So you're you make 300 more dollars? Well on the 900 that you're netting after vacancy and repairs. That's a 33% increase in your rents. But one of you Sold that property 10 31 tax deferred exchange while you still can. And you bought Nine units with them with the money which you could easily get now the rents go up $100 and your rent went up $900 a month which doubled the rate of return that you're getting right now. Just just one rent increase. From nine units instead of from three units. So this is the kind of thing that anybody that owns rental houses it and you haven't looked at your numbers for a while. I mean, bringing your stuff and Ah, you and I met last Friday with with the gentleman that his own Reynolds since I was six or seven. And the return was the Horton horrific? No, I mean by selling a few of US properties. It's literally a life changing experience. And then Jerry, you know, this is the thing that I wanted to point out. Um, the guy buying one of these triplex is is getting alone with you. And he's putting 30% down and you on on a multi plex on it. Try plex. You found him a 3.6 to 5 interest rate, right? Right. So you think about that a little bit. That's just I mean, people were paying more than that for a house last year. No, I mean rates are phenomenal and then going back to we keep saying this is the good times you know, from last year with with when rates 2.5% I say good times, you know, in a mortgage rate perspective. These rates are not gonna last even the inflationary numbers that came out on Friday. Um, although they were in line with expectations, they are running hot and if we presume That is going to continue. The Fed is going to have to, you know, part of the reason why mortgage rates you so low is cause the Fed is in buying mortgage backed securities every during Copan. Yep. What they're doing it now, so they're buying US Treasuries and they're buying mortgage backed securities, which is artificially keeping these rates low. There is actually the biggest buyer of mortgage backed securities. So they're talking about doing that Taper of pulling back there buying later this year. It was supposed to be next year. But now some of the the Federal Reserve members were saying maybe we should take it are stop or buying less of mortgage backed securities later this year if they do that, Mortgage rates are going to rise up. And so it's this is the boom time to be able to purchase or re finance. I don't know how long it'll last. But my guess is it's the next 3 to 4 months and then rates are going to go higher. I couldn't agree more. So we're going to talk more about that, and I have a couple of deals coming up that we're going to talk about after the break. This is Tucson Home Solutions on K. Nestea. As the Buckeyes on the board for this man baseball his life. It's your guest host of the lead off spot. Bay Area news groups. Giants beat writer Terry Crowley hear him by saying to your Apple Home pod play KNBR. Trade to the Bay was true. On Thursday night when the Sanders killed 40. Niners made Trey Lance the quarterback of the future. It was true on Friday night as well. Third round draft pick Trace sermon. Joining the 40 Niners offensive contingent out of Ohio State a lot to like about this 40 Niner strap. That's how every fan base in the NFL feels after draft weekend, All 32 teams felt like their team came through with an upgrade. But I really do think that the future of the 40 Niners has changed over the weekend because this team has an offensive identity. Now with Trey Lance Ah guy who can extend plays a guy who can run the football as well as past the football and Trey sermon, joining this offense as well. A second round draft pick Aaron Banks. One of the largest offensive lineman the 40 Niners have pursued and cow Shanahan and John Lynch's tenure. I'm really excited about the run game possibilities, And to me, that's what Kyle Shanahan has always done best. His dominate opposing defense is through scheming up favorable run matchups, favorable defensive alignments through what he could do on offense, and now he has more athletes to help out this sporting matters. Offensive system trace sermon an interesting pick. Of course, because the 40 Niners for the past few seasons have gone with wide receivers in early rounds of the draft. We saw the 40 Niners do it. Not so successfully trading up for Dante Pettus. We saw them try and get Jalen Hurd in the third round. We all know how that has worked out so far, although San Francisco's still remaining optimistic about her chances of impacting this offense, But I like the certainty that you get would trace sermon who produced at Oklahoma who produced after transferring to Ohio State and produced on the biggest stage is like Last year as a grad transfer with the big 300 yard game that we talked about in the Big 10 championship. And then, of course, playing well against Clemson later on. So one thing that I want to touch on what Trey Lance's John Lynch's comments that post draft about what they saw in him or Trey sermon. I should say what they saw in him why they felt comfortable going after running back. So here's the 40, Niners general manager on the new running back out of Ohio State. You look at our backs in the past, and I think one common element is the speed and you may Look at his 40 time and say he doesn't really fit but sometimes 40 times can be deceiving. I You know, I think What speaks to us is like is 10 time was very good. And so you see that burst You see that ability to stick his foot in the ground, break tackles and hid it in a hurry. And then he's very adept at making the you know the free safety. The second Second level defender Miss. And so you know, they really good out of the backfield in the past game is well, I think he's a good fit for what we do. It was exciting, you know, colonized started this morning kind of watching the backs and it was fun. T o be able, and I think the move was prompted by just a growing feeling that Trey was a really good fit for us. And I think we stayed patient. But when we felt like, all right, our luck's about to run out. We made the move and we're happy to be able to do so. Make no mistake where he most hurt is still the home run hitter for this offense when the 40 Niners have a schematic advantage when they think that they can take a team deep through the run game. Most her will be the guy in the game for cow Shannon. He's the one with the breakaway speed, but where he moster has dealt with injuries. At times. He's probably not as effective when you give him the ball more than 15 times per game. The 40 Niners have seen that over the last few seasons, and they saw how effective he could be in the 2019 2020 post season when he was fresh. And well rested. He dominated against the Minnesota Vikings have the historic performance against the Green Bay Packers. And that's why the 40 Niners felt that it was necessary to go out and get Trey sermon to aid this backfield. He's someone who could have more of a day, one impact than Trey. Lance. In my opinion, I think that Lance is gonna have some growing pains. Lance is gonna be someone who you're not going to work into the offense. One week one. I really do think that the 40 Niners will defer to Jimmy Garoppolo at the outset of the season. Look, if Trey Lance passes him in week two and week three and practice that I do think that they will make that change. But I really feel confident that trace sermon is going to be a big addition. Right off the bat through this 40 Niners often so is exciting. His tray lances for the next decade Trace sermon gets me a little book more excited for the month of September when it comes to watching this 40 Niners offense on the field. Another guy that I want to touch on from this 49 of drafts. Been round pick Aaron Banks. I thought it was really interesting. The 40 Niners targeted a guard on offense because you don't often see that. In the first few rounds of the NFL draft teams were much more reluctant to take guards and they are to take tackles because tackles provide that premium value. They can stop pass rushers on the edge There number one job is to protect the quarterback. Keep them up right. And so the 40 Niners already gave all of that money to Trent Williams in the historic contract they picked up the fifth year option of Mike McGlinchy said There was Really no need for this team to go out and get a tackle this year, but they still wanted to fortify the offensive line with Laken. Tomlinson started in that left guard former first round pick who they traded a few years ago from the Detroit Lions to get him and he's been great. Ever since Arriving in San Francisco, they went out and got Aaron Banks and El Sereno Native Bay Area Guy grew up 40 Niners fan out of Notre Dame. So Michael Glenn, She's got some familiarity with him. And I think that banks is someone £325 to isn't necessarily the proto typical offensive line. And for Kyle Shanahan Zone scheme, But he is someone who offers ah lot of intrigue at the position because of how different he is in couch. Shanahan talked about some of that why the 40 Niners pursued Aaron Banks. People talk about. It's always one small guys, but that's not the case we want..

And listen, I grew up in you know in the CIA that a false flag is is a term of Art in Espionage. That's where I'm trying to recruit a, you know name at in a ranian nuclear official. I could pretend to be a wage what a South African instead of being an American so that that person thinks they're working on behalf of South Africa and you said the United States because they're they don't want to talk to the United States and to see these these loons. Yep. Was that term, you know for this crazy stuff in their head, you know, you know, I just don't I just don't get it and I'm with you on this. I'm I'm Yeah speechless well, I do want to get get into your article in the Atlantic about Trump and Putin but just before that cuz I did my research so I hope you're okay. I have thought I actually did read I mean I did a lot of research this morning but man but I do want to ask you about the Insurrection as a member of the CIA. Now off. First of all, why do you think the capital policed? Why do you think they didn't ask for help off? Like I don't understand why I you know, I don't know the right answer to that. I think there was a concern that if they over militarized it you remember the the White House Office had been correctly. In fact had been criticized for having so many people on the streets and and beating protestors and using you know gas and things against protesters that wage. They underprepared this time. They they wanted they didn't want to look like they were being heavy-handed. And obviously it was it was a failure of intelligence and a failure of planning such that they weren't ready for some sort of surprised by the fact that our our buildings are capital and places are not more hardened, you know, I worked overseas in our embassies overseas in war zones and other places are so often that essentially if we went inside to hide from a mob people looking to burn it down or break down the building or you know, use guns to get in it would take you days. If not longer to break through, you know, do you know protected windows and doors and their luck you can't get into these embassies cuz they're hardened in our Capital. You can just smash the doors down. Come on, like it's just crazy to me that they more protected in a better way than they were. Not the you know, and I'm not believe me. I'm not a firm believer of conspiracy theories, but it almost a lot of people yelling that it was an inside job. Like somebody was helping this to go off on is there any Merit to that way of thinking? Yeah, I had a conspiratorial thinker either but of course, you know people in the police and military and no different than and either their citizens and so there's going to be people who are of of different sizes and political issues and there's probably people who are sympathetic to some of this this crew now, whether they planned ahead of time and they were assisting these people I just don't know and I hope that they're serious investigations to find out that's true because if it is, you know, these people need to be locked away for a long time. I know it's just it's well, you know before I get to your article cuz I do have a lot to talk to you. But okay, so the so the choice is going to start on the 8th. Correct or no control? Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Okay. You know, what do you think is going to be the outcome? I mean, is there any chance that the Republicans will convict him? No, I don't think so, but they'll use you know, they're they're nervous that the Democrats will make a good case. They'll have videos they'll have things to show just how Trump and his supporters and Stoke these people they've lied to them. They've they've they've you know stoked an anger they'd created this Frankenstein's monster and then they Unleashed it so it'll be embarrassing to them but they'll use you know, say well, you know, he's out of power now, it's not really constitutional to come up with all kinds of reasons why that they, you know, they will not be able to quit and they won't find him guilty. So I don't think so. I think if you if there's 325 Republican Senators a vote for him. I think that'll be a sign that it's taken very seriously. But like I said a lot of these Republicans they're afraid of those people those are their voters they need them and so they can't turn on Trump, you know, unless they're willing to you know, lose their jobs and and frankly, they should be courageous enough to do that. I mean, we we hire them for one of the most important jobs in the in the United States. There are Representatives. They should not be afraid to lose their job by to do the right thing. Yeah, and it is in the Constitution that if you impeach there has to be trial, you know, after that the has to be child. So by arguing that it's unconstitutional is you know is a load of horseshit. You know what I mean. But it's like a lot of things we've seen they understand that they can just put their hands up and confuse people they'll get away with it. And I think that's what they're hoping. They're hoping that you know, the new cycle will move on and people will forget God But I hope people don't forget. I hope they vote these people out. Yes..

"Kind of a side story that I'd never heard before and I happened to stumble across while noodling around on the internet in my research on the Chicago outfit. Now, we're going to kind of dip back into the hole in the wall gang a little bit and in regards to the Hole in the Wall Gang. I can't remember if I've said this or not. I had bought a telephone calls back and forth and and helped a guy named Ernie d'avino get connected up with a company that was trying to do a documentary on the Hole in the Wall Gang dead. Ernie died I just found out here recently. So he and Frank cullotta. They were both in the Hole in the Wall Gang. They both claimed credit for starting the Hole in the Wall Gang and I'll tell you right now they didn't really like each other. They didn't really know each other later in life. But see Ernie never broke her knee took the hit and did some time out of that birth escaped her that night and he actually went to Tony Spilotro his trial testified that don't cilantro didn't know anything about that didn't have anything to do with it tried to help him beat that case. Of course. Tony was killed shortly after that. So I don't remember if he was actually found guilty for them all in the Wall Gang versus burglary or not. But in Jonas had no done now both Frank and Ernie or dead, but this is a little different sort of a story and I'm going to start talking about a month Hollywood movie producer man has he was born under the name of Evron go bogging but he became known as Michael Todd. He started out as a young man. He grew up up down. North central part of the United States and moved to Chicago started out in the construction business then kind of got into the film industry when he was working on soundproofing stages when this home when the pictures first changed from Silent to talking films during the Depression, they would go bankrupt but he came back in the construction business and World War Two came along during World War II just start getting into the movie business and right after World War Two probably is like more like the early fifties. He developed a new big screen film processing operation called said, I don't know if you remember Center. Am I remember probably when I was in late grade school, it came out with these huge big screen Productions that were Cinerama. They were mainly web application and had the Big Sky country as a background. He broke off from the company that develops Cinerama, which he had been involved with and developed another widescreen film process wage. Became known as tadeo. And that was immensely popular his I think his first success with that was a film version of the real popular. Musical, Oklahoma. I'll try to sing Oklahoma for you, but it would not sound good. Just remember they spell out. Okay l a h o m a Oklahoma. Okay. That's the extent of my saying folks his next big hit was Around the World in Eighty Days and I remember seeing that I think of it as a freshman in high school or something. It was a huge big production that a lot of fun. It was a comedy and won an Academy Award for the best picture in 1957, but in the very next year 1958 Michael Todd at the very peak of his success, he'd won an Academy Award. He was going all around the country. He was getting all kinds of offers and he was it was going from one part of the country to the other. I can't remember exactly page where it was a small private plane and it was killed in an airplane crash at this point in time. He was also married to the most popular and what some would say the most beautiful actress in Hollywood Elizabeth Taylor dead. That the peak of her career in the fifties. They lived Hollywood Legend through huge big parties. They lived on a lavish scale. He left a huge big estate after he died in this airplane Christ. It was wage estimated three to five million dollars. Now that doesn't seem like so much now in 1957 325 million dollars was probably more like forty to fifty million dollars Thirty to fifty million dollars at the estate office to Elizabeth Taylor and they had a daughter together named Elizabeth Frances and wonder whatever happened Elizabeth Frances Todd, or maybe she used the name of gold bug and I don't know. I've never heard of the daughter off the other half of this state went to his son by a former marriage that Michael Todd Jr. During the years since his death and internment and they had a big funeral and Chicago and he was buried in Chicago but people started a rumor that Elizabeth Taylor as they closed the coffin down on him and put a big ten carat diamond ring that was valued at $100,000 on Thurs. Has been stronger now authorities would later say that anybody who did even a little bit of research in read the newspaper articles about the accent would figure that there probably wasn't enough left a Michael, body to put any kind of a ring on but maybe you know, I guess you might assume she just throw it in the casket with him. I don't know

NBC to take over U.S. Open coverage from Fox Sports
"Like the the only innovator because I know but let me ask for the people are going to be listening. Fox is the only one that's innovative anything over the last several years. In my mind, they've changed the way show. How frequently shot tracers us? They have done so many good like really long segments of commercial free. They've given you audio. That's better than anything. We've gotten in in TV and they've shook up this infrastructure. That's heavily tied to CBS and NBC. That is an issue especially with like tour run events. Events just commercial load and everything like that it's been the best viewing experience I think to watch golf on Fox. Some people love the commentary for that address horrible first year. How far they've come so far and they are like they are the only ones that seem to be proactive in getting ahead of the curve and trying to be be different, and now we're back to just these two networks again. Maybe Johnny Come Back Oh. It's for sure back. Later it seemed like also the that Fox treated like a loss leader. Yeah, you know it was like a prestige play for them and now that. Now with NBC. It's you know it's like I. Don't know if Fox had an owl or NBC. You know it's like is the US usgs taken a big financial hit to you have no. frigging blank check from Fox. How the economics of that word is basically came out like ninety one million. Know what it was I just don't know how I don't either I. Don't know how that I hope somebody's keep an eye on the amateurs and the lower level events. I thought I love. Oxyde cut-back on that the last couple of years, which was disappointing. Because nobody else. It's there right, so nobody else can pick it up and we're like even like us, open sectionals golf channel used to treat it. In all its glory golf's longest day, and they did studio shows i. was doing a lot of that to SLURP THE USDA to try to get the next rate steel, and they really like blew it out of the water this one year, and then the US. Jay was kind of like how great job

Will Gordon earns special temporary membership, eyes 2020-21 Tour card
"Patch down there that WHO's to say, if it really counts yeah good point on fifteen, we'll Gordon. What do we think of Thi? This is your time to shine. I've been I've been pumping the guy for a while what you want to expand on that? You guys you. Know I think. US We saw him in Reno last year. Upset at the at the. CRAPS table for people. First Time, you'd ever gain a little bit own my God. Gosh Room. I knew he could send it, but he was hitting one, eight, hundred, six, hundred, eighty, seven off the boss. Be that it's. Not a pure bryson drive, but that's what what Brice for him. He played well and so for him to come out last year and Be In the same class as Wolf Morikawa Justin, sue all those guys and like that's a tough battle for. Those! Four guys get sponsor exemptions from that crew each each week. He was kind the fifth guy. And, so this year seen what he's done with them. It's been remarkable. That's what I was GONNA say I don't know that. I don't know if anybody can really put into perspective just how impressive it is to. To actually go out and do that to come out in this is what is second or third top ten onto. Him It's hard to explain I kind of messed it up earlier, but basically you get seven spa. You get seven sponsor's exemptions. Member of the Torah the maximum amount you can take, you can get up to set. You can get on automatically. Unless you love. Is More than than so. So. You Get up to seven to get as many points as whoever finished one fiftieth on the prior year. Pointless or money one of those two, so you have seven start, so whoever finished one fiftieth probably had over twenty starts. You're already hands tiny back. You know when you're going to get started is that that's how you get special temporary membership special temporary members, which allows you get an unlimited number of sponsor exemptions for the rest of the year correct, and if you finish once you are you give special temporary membership? If you've finished in the top twenty five, then you get a card for next year as it turns out the way that things have worked this year. Basically, it's the. The same number so once he gets special temporary

Hasn't Been R2D2'd
"So we have this youtube channel. And we've made videos the self-imposed thing when I started doing this fulltime into us in fourteen or fifteen. I told myself I'M GONNA make it you to the every week on. Youtube was popular but probably not quite as as household ubiquitous as it is today That really worked that really help. Grow our channel Those were usually called the Wednesday widget in What I realized about a year year and a half ago as well. Let's shift away from just doing a different project every week. Lester do this kind of long-term build at this point we had machines and resources and people were thought. Maybe we could pull this off and this was an absolute dream to me. And it's Kinda one of those. There's no way we're going to do this but but we'll do it and it's funny because when we started off it was just going to be us there's a key twist to that plot and The one of the guys who worked with US named Ed. He's incredibly talented. And frankly has done most of the work today on Johnny Five. Ed were both huge fans of short-circuit usually influential in our sort of passion for upbringing robotics. And what I thought was interesting was not only did. I love Johnny but everybody else loves Johnny Five. But he hasn't been your are two D- Tude or some of the other really popular robots costly type thing. I thought if we can really pull off Johnny Five. That is amazing. And there's this rawness to Johnny Five. He's not quite as a practical or or even finessed as some other Other Robots Wall E. R. Two D. Two. So we said let's do it and so will hour we're gonNA start will start from the bottom up in so I forget the exact timing detail but we started talking about it And it's one of those things amazing about the world that we live in with The the many positives of social media in this manufacturing community was in relatively short order. We met The folks from Input Inc and I gotta give them huge shout. This is the stories. I remember it's been about a year year and a half ago. Basically we had a call with them and they said we've been working on this for a decade. They had access to one of the things that were something like eighteen. Johnny five builds for short circuit. Not all of them were full. Robots in fact if you go into rewatch short-circuit you'll realize how Hollywood has played their tricks on you because so many of the scenes for example when he's leaning forward in the Nova van to push the radio button. That's just an arm. That's not a full J. Five build things like that delight to US shocking. And so they had access to a LA A. Version of one of the set props in were able to build incredible Drawings in one of the members of that team is a full blown professional cad designer so the architecture behind this cad model had full-blown proper. Plm architecture build quality the files are absolutely prima which is almost unheard of in these sort of situations and they sort of said. Hey you Kind of funny. They actually said something that I really appreciate it with her. Like you've proven that you're a kind of a critical good member of this community. You know you WANNA share his pay forward. Get it done. We had three axis milling machines fourth access even five access. We had some sheet metal stuff so I'm not sure I realized I knew it was going to be a big project. I don't know if I it's almost impossible to digest how big it really was at the time But I can't say we did it in the past tense. Because that's we're not there yet but we basically have all the parts done We have a handful left. And we've got maybe the bottom third of his assembled we haven't started assembling the rest simply because there's a rhyme or reason to how we have to put those parts together and we want to also document some of that on video But I I can say with confidence that were very close and this is seven feet tall right. I mean this is. This is not the little dog robot from Dr Ho. This is a serious industrial scale. Robot to to the point of it was a concern. The there's a couple of things that the Inputting folks did have to change simply because the way that certain electromechanical components are made. These days are different than in nineteen eighty six so you just. It's not a matter of pride you just can't get a server motors or hydraulics and so forth and so they changed the I actually love this. They changed Or or somehow change the drive mechanism of the two tank drives of. There's so many fun trivia factor. First off do you know what Johnny Fives tank treads are made from unknown? It looks like tank treads it. Stirs stripy in the guy around drag became couldn't be further from the truth. What is awesome? Is We actually own? The exact tank treads and you in fact could also own. The exact tank treads today. They are a food grade conveyor belt material. Wow and they are they come in a strip. That's about an inch and a half longer on each side so maybe three inches longer. And so we luckily had a laser so we just laser them down to to to that profiling correct sizing but that was one of the first things. We actually started working in fact. That's what it was. We started building the fixture into two machine each one of these links which would have been a huge amount of effort. And that's when somebody Hopton Started saying Hey nope. Those are actually off the shelf component. You'd have to modify them So and then we do three d print pads that are the black Surpise what's cool is. Those are actually alternating between a rubberized print material in a hard one which gives them better traction control on varied services. So as you're doing this this sounds like a really difficult process real industrial process to make a movie prop. What did the movie folks do? Do you have any Insight into the history of how the actual props eighteen. I know the rate there were a lot. But that's how it was even bigger project back in nineteen eighty five. Was it. So what? What were they doing? Did they have a massive giant company that they contracted out to hear hair? Build us a real robot what I can say is. It's absolutely amazing. Maybe maybe not for them because this is what they do. But I mean from an outsider's perspective. Absolutely amazing they built these a number of months now. There's one key difference is that they had a budget. We're we're Kinda doing this like unlike just I'd almost this side because he certainly had more attention than that but we're not a for all intensive purposes. Were not making any money doing this. So it's not our business and but the big difference is also they had. They had no scenes. They had all manual machines now. A ton of things that were machine or going kind of over. The top like for instance. There's some inside Motor covers to would've covered. The original tank drives. Those would have been Vacuumed formed which a lot of Johnny was vacuum formed. A which is classic. Hollywood cheat technique. We're actually machine. It so in ours will probably be the most robust build

With the next Xbox, Microsoft is done competing with PlayStation: 'We see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward'
"Think I'M GONNA go with for my story of the week this interview with Phil Spencer of of xbox saying that Latte he considers their competitor xbox not to be Sony or Nintendo but Amazon and Google Google That Sony Nintendo are not playing in the same sandbox. Because they don't have cloud tech like Microsoft's Azure platform and that. That's really where xbox is competing with project X cloud and with Microsoft game pass that they are really services company and Nintendo and Sony are doing something that Microsoft is basically leaving behind signed The quote here is when you talk about Nintendo and Sony. We have a ton of respect for them but we see Amazon Google as the main competitors going forward. That's not to disrespect respect Nintendo and Sony but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to recreate as your but we've invested. Tens of billions of dollars is in cloud over the year of years So the reason I think this is interesting is not just because it makes for a good headline which does but because I think this really shows an insight into something we've talked about on the show over and over again which is the future that Microsoft is positioning for. And the the idea of how we are all GONNA be playing video games in the future you know. I made a a cool cool ranch prediction at the end of last year about halo being on a Sony System on a Nintendo system on some other system the go ahead and prediction but I think this bolsters that that idea. I think this is what he's talking about. What is the idea that Microsoft gone are the days of the console wars so to speak? This is all about that next. He's you're fine taking the four hundred dollars once every five years. They want your ten dollars every month for five years. They want your commitment to their platform. They want they want to be The bartering every dollar that you spend online in their ecosystem and I think that is going to be ultimately a pretty awesome prospect for Gamers in the short term will. I don't no no in the long term but I think in the short term. I think that's going to be a pretty interesting thing where we are going to have the freedom to play things on anything we want. Things aren't going to be locked to consoles. Microsoft doesn't care anymore they don't care they wanNA create things that are compelling and then have you use their infrastructure to play those

"Okay guys we are getting started it and I'm so excited. We haven't had two guests on at the same time in quite a while and so welcome to my dear friends Martha and Rebecca. I'm so glad you guys are here. Were so heck yes. This is going to be so good so I recently did a post about five women founders. Do you need to be following in. Can you two are on that list because of what you've created and started which is flow desk so will explain what flow desk is and everything but I want to know what what did your early careers. Look like and then we'll talk about what you've recently created together so first name is Rebecca Shaw sack and Dan Assan of you know. I collaborated with Jenna on the template shot but may jury began long before that my first job out of college was actually designing the merchandise in days and album covers logos for some pretty big name bands. Like Lincoln Park Cheryl Crowe elitist more set which is a really incredible notable experience for me but it was a corporate job in always wanted to be an entrepreneur at heart so coming from that drew you twist of fate. I ended up falling being in love with a creative industry and started building a few tablets shops on my own. I learned how to create templates for the creative industry especially with photographers gophers. In from that I just really fell in love with helping people running businesses. I had a huge fashion for creating tools in designs that helps other people grow their businesses. The way that I grew mine which was really exciting in front that I was in a lot of circles with a creative industry. In of course I had a lot of overlap with honey books in through that I met Martha I remember what they were getting together and we just had quite a few glasses of wine in the the creative industry and especially about marketing. And I remember just have so many wonderful discussions about that and I just think when you take two curls who are excited about what they do and excited about an industry and you throw in a little bit of rain on South you get amazing things happening. Doesn't everyone remember remember when they met Martha. Like I feel like it's like I did. Finding factor in your life is Martha. You remember the moment that you met her. The three so genitally remind the scene here. Were both standing up passing Mike back and forth to children in Rebecca Toll only eleven. So you can imagine like buying for Mike. I was tempted to just does no. I actually didn't parents Pursuits at some point. But I didn't think that that's what I wanted to do. Do I really really really wanted to work for an intelligence agency dream. I love data for policy. I wanted to make an impact in and I trained. I learned violin ridges a train for these job for years and did research and then finally got the job and and I didn't get the security which and there's no real explanation that there are a couple of reasons why I ended up parents. I grew up in Mexico in my parents. Leaving Mexico steals So it could be you know the inability to protect office abroad. I went to Cuba examples the Bulls nationalities or. I have no idea but it crushed me because I never had something that I really really wanted that I didn't get so without. How can I remember taking the first interview that I could? And it was in tech sales he and I was like yes sales commonsense. I can sell I. I can talk I can tell I became like a shark. I loved IT I. It's a well but then there. There are some days so I went to a really really large tech sales for In there were some compliance deals as buildings. Jimmy Jimmy like a goal is pretty black way. There's something that just kind of gets the gray area so again. I feel like coming fun. I mean my money I need to go and do something. That feels a lot more impactful. And that's how I ended up getting connected with huck where I started their self esteem actually and then grew to manage partnerships and business development and then in working with our top educators like you. I realized that educators Peter's needed a lot more support from an email marketing perspective. And that's how ovation started with Rebecca and I talked a ton about this and we were recently recently in Arizona together and there is just this like fiery passion behind both of you where it's like now like we gotta figure out a better solution and there are so many times in our lives where we're like. This is a pain point. Like how is nobody thought of something better. Never actually think like we're going to be the ones to step into that role so I want to know I like. What did you see in the land of email marketing? That made you feel like it was time for a new solution. And then what equipped you to be like. We're going to be the ones to do this. I think I was exactly what you just. We realized that none of the solutions are relevant. Eleven and then we discovered that the pain in these Steve need in the market separately. On my hand I was working with educators or top rated greatest mated in their business and there wasn't trend a most successful Nail emerging but had major teams like full design nineteen marketing teams tech teams in. There were other heaters. That were made it as well. They were teaching other rates but they couldn't didn't figure out email marketing in my mind. These are the most stabby business. Ivy Tech Design Savvy Marketing. Great in your. I just told us like why is it so hard in then. I thought well you know what I know a friend. So let me Problems in you know what I've been selling hamlets four photographers in. Maybe his gallery and make number one support. Price is I love the template and I have no antioch how either And then realized so clearly there is a problem in what what we really really wanted to see Z.. Y. Solo Entrepreneur. Mark Randolph talks about turning a No into a Yes
"Everybody Buddy welcome to episode three twenty five of the ask. Garry show and I'm very excited about this episode. Let's go right into it. I know a lot of people watching livestream across all the platforms but it's GonNa be Lincoln today. As we continue testing out Lincoln live linked in. Please put in your phone numbers. If you have a question for for my distinguished guest here today Markham and allow you to introduce yourself in a second. new book is out. Obviously I'm really excited about talking about Netflix and his career but I want to get into a bunch of questions because even the first three or four minutes of just hanging with him before we went live. I think the energy is going to be really good which which is exciting to me from a content standpoint so mark. Why don't you introduce yourself and tell everybody a little bit about your origin. Story sounds good. Gary so Marc Randolph co-founder co-founder for CEO net flicks and now soon to be author. which is kind of adding something totally new to my mix for you origin story well? I'm I'm sixty one so I'm still working out with. My origin story is what were you born. I was born just over there in Chappaqua up so I'm a New York boy. He's so for the first half of my life and so. What kind of kid were you so? I was a kid who anytime I wanted to do something. My parents said go for it. That's I I come home and go dad. I'm going to caving in rather than being like what are you. What are you nuts. I get the fantastic. That sounds really cool. That's really neat. It was really neat. Where where were you in the only child you have siblings. I'm the oldest of three okay so right off the bat. Even you know it's funny you hear that a lot more from third child's else perspective so even as the oldest. Your parents had gave you some room. I think for third child. It's like what's what's your name. I know knows it was is really great. It all other thing I do reflect back on. What was it about how I grew up that maybe gave me? Some of the things I have and one is that it was also a family. We're no is always something to get around. It was like not something that you took no and walked and left from the standpoint of if your parents said no oh they appreciated you trying to figure it out a little bit 'cause my mom was like that a little bit yeah and also them kind of recognizing that whenever barrier came up it wasn't like we give up and walk away okay it. It was always being said there's amazing. Go right into this a little bit later this. I was graduating from college okay and I wanted to get a job as a advertising EXAC back. Okay I was really into yet anyway. I applied for this job at. NWEA air no longer here but firm Yup and it was one of those jobs which only usually usually goes to MBA's yup is an undergraduate so as long shot thing and those like I don't know a thousand people applying and I got the first round and then the second round they bring it in York and and I got the second round in the third round they bring you back and I got down to the point where there's only four people applying for this job and it was like Holy Shit and I went in in an interview with everybody whole day and didn't get it and went slinging backup to upstate New York college and going well screw it. I'm I'm not going to up so I wrote these long emails to our letters letters letters to everybody and basically was saying like all right. I'll try again. What what could I do better. What should I learn. What do you want to see and then the guy goes. Come on down and brings me up and offered me the job and the crazy thing is that no one was given the job none of the four of us interesting that this was a job which was about turning a no into Oh yes and so they said no to everybody and waited to see who would not take no for an answer really absolutely. That's amazing that a crazy crazy thing thing. I love it so that really is probably the best articulation of how I grew up interesting so you took that job kind of actually notice how I kind of the way you tell us what I'm like. He didn't take the fucking job I did and I took it even crazier job. which was there was the guy? I've ever told history before. There was a guy in Memphis. Tennessee owned a big cotton company sold it in the family of two hundred years made a gazillion dollars and was basically driving around throwing money out the window basically feels like today you're go he'd he bought these properties and I'm kind of an outdoorsy guy. They have always been into like your story was caves. Yes absolutely WHOA. This guy had bought a ski shop. He'd bought a place out veil and he was looking for someone to tie them altogether and he goes. You'RE GONNA. You're going to run this kind of this big CO marketing business. Did you know that family friends that someone like that. That would give you that at bat at that. Young of an age. There was some other variable relationships. You're you're drag me down. These complicated stories but you're pro so there's an organization that I apologize business where I wanNA bring value to the audience mark. Here's why the reason I'm probing is because I have a very good sense of my audience and ironically. I'm pretty good at this other than the fact. I love to interrupt all the time. I'm because I'm just because I already know what the answers are and because I'm usually on a time crunch so they actually the audience gets mad at me. 'cause I interrupt everyone on the flip side. I've an incredible sense about what stories could bring value. I promise you mark let me tell you one thing about this audience. This is not the today show like what's amazing about. This audience is thirty. Four people bull arbitrary number just heard that story and literally in the next twenty four hours are going to reply to a no and one was gonna get yes and you and I literally right now. Just change the course of somebody's life and that's what gets me high. It's it's unbelievable and by the way don't worry about the interrupting. I mean if you just said like pass the roles and the thought I was talk about the story cool. How'd you get them. So when I was fourteen they packed my parents pack up to Wyoming to do this. backpacking trip in the mountains uh-huh and it turns holidays again which one of your parents was super outdoorsy. If either my dad my dad grew up in Austria so he kind of just if you've gone so and then I loved this program and it was a personal teaches leadership using a wilderness as a setting and I was a student there for three or four summers and then I ended up teaching there as a leader and then eventually got to the point is leading leading the whole courses so a lot of responsibility young that was my college summer job and so this Julian Jay Hohenberger the third the guy with the Cotton Company at one of the things he did when he was throwing the money the window was. I'm GonNa take a course he. He went out to Wyoming. He did this course you taught it. I did not he was so in Namur d- by the course and instructors that when he heard from my through through someone else that I was of course leader there he goes. I want that guy. You know what's so funny. I to this day still have that in me. You show me a kid a guy or a gal who flips sneakers cells blow. POPS does cards like I believe in that Shit Genetic Markers for entrepreneurship I do not it's candy the arbitrage everyone almost everyone. I meet like you says the same thing. It's going in and buying it for ten cents in the next day you go to school for a buck and if you show me people not that it's why. I love people that sell weed who sought like if you tell me that you sold we'd from a bad neighborhood obviously a normally but not always and and you sold nickel bags. I already am interested in you because it means literally arbitrage dime bags. Somebody who's never smoked weed telling the story Free College. I always thought my friend Bob use would have been a good entrepreneur because he had the discipline and the grind to go down to the nickel bag bag level that takes a real fucking commitment and so- arbitrage anyway absolutely right. It's it's the vision to go knocking. It's seeing an opportunity. It's seeing a pressure differential hundred and that happens for kids who are six when it's candy. It happens for people in their twenty six or forty six when they see oh man taxis suck. I'M GONNA do hundred thousand percent. It's that's why it's a marker for that is someone who sees things really matched of course with all these other things. Of course you've seen which is what happened your kid out of school. You're twenty two and you're now running this conglomerate of different businesses and then even worse. I did this job percents and this company better the company that one of the properties was in in the ghost town resort in outside of Vale and the manager did your left and they go and I go I want that job and so they moved me out and now you're this twenty-three-year-old knows nothing and he's running this place which a sixty employees and as he's huge cash flow issues and a restaurant bar and and I'm going down. I'm doing the marketing and the advertising and it was like cashflow one. Oh one it was management one. Oh one it was thrown into this super deep pool and going to swim. You don't know how you're sitting. You're quiet because I'm like. Oh my God we grew up the same way. I'm the byproduct of the same thing in a liquor store. Yeah it was a small base of four five and six employees and then I grew it but by the time I was twenty five years old. I had managed people. I'd paid all my bills with my cat own cash flow. You know credit no credit line. I forget about fucking raising capital. No credit line the first business I built from three to sixty million dollars hours year in fucking eight years had no credit. That's awesome because then you don't see credit as a crutch. You see it's a thing that you is what you know now how to use that the US it's awesome and even if you're trained in it when I raised money for empathy. I didn't spend it as well when when that's exactly right it is something that could save you overspend your business and that is a very very strict teacher so I mean did that cool. Thanks yeah some stuff did that then. It got probably the the job which influenced me the most is. I got this weird job. Quick quick question. I struggle with Sir Twenty three and you're in in this resort town right. Yes resort town SORTA. It's halfway between Vail and steamboat which means the middle of nowhere but it's close to both and you're twenty three twenty three and you've got this kind of cool big job. How did you balance your personal life and your professional life at that point in your life because I've actually I'm not going to lead lead the question. What did you do. How how much did you date. How much fun were you having how much fun where you having a great thing it. Was it was a really good lesson. I had a lot of fun and So don't get me wrong. Because everyone was working. There was twenty three going go ahead and so and and it was the Alpha of the twenty three and that was leverage. That was the bad part though was that these guys it was on the banks of the Colorado River so they'd all go. Hey we're all going rafting going. I've gotTa do you know inventory. I gotta how to pay these responsibilities and it kind of really was painful. So I got a lot of funds. I'm not bemoaning it but there was this realization that there's a different level level of responsibility that I had but I did meet my wife there and so amazing did come out of come out of that go ahead all right so the come come back east and got this how old must've been only twenty four quick twenty-five two years in Colorado two and a half years okay keep going so come back and get this crazy job basically as gopher to the CEO of Music Publishing Company. I think my title was like a I chief of staff or something looking at all. These guys is like literally my so far. I just want everybody who's listening to you right now. I'm sorry mark I'm taking episode over listening. I just I don't know if you've been listening but I think I could see some of you in the room putting the pieces together my core so my advice is to do and like manage and like like actually make and sell it and then or and or if you want to be somebody go work as an Admin a gopher chief of staff for somebody. That's extremely at a very high level each shit. It is basically what I'm saying. Basically is what I'm saying and I'm just GonNa make it simple here so far.
