Media Outlets Like CNN+ Conflate Fame and Popularity
"CNN plus has cratered, which is just phenomenal to see the cratering and the collapse of CNN plus, this is just another sign that what the propaganda that is being spread is not popular. And I said this a couple of years ago as we started to get into podcasting. I said, and I was only wrong on the timing, I wasn't wrong on the essence. I said to my our team Andrew, I said, I don't think people realize how fragile information consumption is about to become. Meaning, I can tell you exactly how many people are downloading our podcast. I can tell you how many people are watching our videos. I can tell you how many people are emailing us and we track those things. You see, we are always constantly Hawking the measurables. Whereas it's important to note and to realize that CNN or a lot of these other channels, they've never really been big on how many people are actually watching them or care about it. In fact, they say, oh no, the numbers are all wrong. We're fine. We're very popular. Well, if people don't want what you put on TV for free, why on earth would they give you money for it? Like cut 24. Yeah. Just went on that. They spent $300 million. They got 10,000 subscribers. Imagine the hubris of thinking that something that people don't want for free. That you're going to charge money for it. We're going to have the Jake tapper book club. Jake tapper seems like a great guy. But I mean, I feel like I don't have to pay for his book club. I feel like you should put that on Twitter. Pay for a Jake tapper book club. We're seeing the trajectory of things on the left collapse because they do not live in the world of objectivity. You see, I live in the world where I discern objective, they live in the world of the subjective, where constantly measuring how many people are downloading. How many people are listening? Where are we at in the charts? What are our ratings? CNN is like, oh, we're a multi-billion dollar machine. It makes you wonder how fragile really is the current media
The Delightful Implosion of CNN+
"I want to talk a little bit more about the delightful implosion of CNN plus. I mean, for me, it's like a kid watching a building come down. You notice how kids love to see a building either explode or implode. It doesn't really matter. It's the destruction that's kind of enjoyable. And obviously, we outgrow those sentiments. And so we don't feel that way when we see a building. But I do feel that way when I see CMM plus implode. And gotten to learn a little bit more about the juicy details behind all this, which are kind of fun to go into. So apparently, when discovery, Discovery Channel took over a CNN. I mean, they knew that CNN sucked. It's not that they thought CNN is great. CNN's fantastic. They were like, this is a problem. And they knew above CNN plus. And they were apparently guided skeptical, but they since they were coming in new. They were reluctant to pull the plug right away. I think their view was, you know what? Let's see how this goes. We'll give it a chance and we will then assess how it's going. And you know, it's worth noting here that these are these kind of major media moguls, this we're talking here about David zaslav, the head of discovery, who became the new boss over at CNN. These guys actually don't know anything. And they've been in the business a long time, but most of their most of their viewpoints are recycled cliches that they pick up from colleagues in the office. And so they launched this massive, multi-million dollar, $300 million, I believe, is what the whole project was to promote CNN plus. Just think about the premise. People, people are so excited by CNN that they want to they'll be willing to pay for more CNN.

"The Batman remains number one and crosses $300 million by Lindsey Barr, Associated Press. The Batman is still going strong three weeks into its theatrical run with a tight grip on the top spot at the box office. Robert Pattinson's debut as The Dark Knight earned an additional $36.8 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. It also slid past the $300 million mark ahead of projections. The Warner Brothers film is the highest grossing movie of 2022, and the second highest, since the beginning of the pandemic, first place goes to Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Batman directed by Matt Reeves, also picked up $49.1 million internationally this weekend, bringing its global total to $598.1 million. The only place The Batman seems to be stumbling is in China, where it earned $12.1 million in its first weekend. But about 43% of cinemas in China are closed due to the pandemic, and The Batman still did slightly better than unchartered, which also opened there this weekend to $10.3 million. The Batman cost an estimated $200 million to make, not counting the many millions spent on marketing, but it is already a win for Warner Brothers, which took a hit at the box office in 2021 because all of its films were released simultaneously in theaters, and on HBO Max. It also helps that marketplace competition has been slim. The biggest competitor this weekend was the anime jiu-jitsu kaizen zero, which was released by crunchyroll and funimation and took in an estimated $17.7 million in its first weekend in North America, where it was playing on 2748 screens. The Japanese film is based on a bestselling manga, and available to watch dubbed or with subtitles. The horror film X also debuted this weekend on 2865 screens and is projected to gross around $4.4 million, directed by Thai west and distributed by a 24 X is about a group of people who are terrorized while shooting a pornographic film..
How Los Angeles Is Failing the Homeless
"Solidad homeless. We're spending more money than ever on homelessness and the parliament is getting worse. What is the city doing wrong? Well, everything. But when you look at Lhasa, that's the Los Angeles homeless services authority. They receive about a $1 billion a year in funding. It's from different sources at the federal state and county level. And the city of Los Angeles pays losses about $300 million a year on our behalf. Shocking is a 2019 audit that came out by our controller Ron galpern, showed that sometimes losses only getting about a 4% success rate. So it really makes you wonder, what are they doing wrong? And a lot of times they're not willing to share. A lot of the metrics that are with the contract. So it's a very good question.
India Ascends While America Descends
"But sometimes it's good to step back a little bit and try to get the larger picture, the sort of 10,000 foot view, if you will. And I'm watching a very interesting skirmish playing out on social media that raises this kind of a larger issue. So you got a guy who is called the last contrarian on Twitter and he's been posting photos of India versus the United States. Obviously, catches my interest to someone who came from India to America in the late 1970s. And this guy makes the point, he goes, listen, most westerners think of India as a kind of backward slumdog millionaire begging bowl of the world type of country. But he goes, you don't realize what India looks like now. And he posts all these pictures of how clean the airports are, how efficient and modern, the trains look, the huge skyscrapers that make even New York to some degree start looking a little bit old and run down and he then makes the point which is that India is an ascending society, and he says it's part of the ascending world, whereas America is part of the descending world. And he's implies that western as our kind of in denial that they are in the downward slope. Now, a couple of Indians weigh in on this and kind of reinforce what he's saying. And one guy says that if you compare the Indian city of kanpur, it launched a new metro rail system, which had built in two years. And he says contrast this with San Francisco, which has spent $300 million and literally decades to build a metro system and it's still not finished. So the efficiency is the point here and then this Indian guy biological srinivasan makes the point he says, you know, if you told me, even 20 years ago, that Indian cities would look better than American cities or live better. You'd be you can actually have a more livable life

"Or do you maybe get some of the things done that you like early? And then that way, if you run out of time, it's magically for the stuff that you didn't want to have to do anyways, or do you just take it as it comes? Yeah. I've kind of a funny setup on this in that I don't really run my schedule or my tasks at all. I don't have any say in what gets done. I have so many people that depend on me for little things. And so they just get to put on my calendar and then I do it the order at they tell me to do it in. It's kind of funny. I'm sure I could do stuff, but I just find I'm so bad at doing anything. I will lay in bed and watch TikTok if given the opportunity over anything else about how important it is. I will just do nothing. And so I have to hack my life to be and I know David you and I are very similar in this. I have to hack my life so that so that so that your own weaknesses. Yes. That's why Jerry shows up at my house to teach jiu-jitsu. That's why Adriana shows up my house to do my massage. Because I need that thinking time. I will not take that thinking time unless somebody's at my house going, well, you got I'm here. And I love get a massage every week. It's the most profitable time I have because it's my thinking time. Plus the hour in the morning, you know, like the miracle morning stuff helps. But I still say the massage helps. So anyway, I don't choose what I do, I guess. What about a few years back though, Brandon, before yeah, before I had that, you could afford to hire those people. You know, that's what about them. Yeah, it's a good question. Yeah, you know, I think I mean, I know that when I eat food, I'm always a veg I ate the worst food to the best food in that order, always. If there's steak and there's broccoli, I like the broccoli first, then move to the steak, right? I think I do that in my own life. I think I did that as well. So I would always do the annoying work first. Eat that frog, like the phrase goes in the book goes. That's a really good book by the way everyone listening eat that frog by Brian Tracy. It's productivity book. Anyway, yes, I will do that first, but yeah. Well, here's why I asked because the pattern of how business works once you get to be pretty successful is that as tasks come in, they get bifurcated into a decision has to be made and work research logistics have to be done. Usually it's sort of like the work research logistics is lining up the bowling pins. And then somebody has to come in and roll the ball. And the skills that we teach on this podcast are mostly decision making skills, analyzing a property, how to raise the money, how to get the money coming in. Which property are we going to buy what ways are we going to add value? That's really what Brandon you call the cut that Doctor Oz would make. That's what a good investor is really focusing on..

"I think certain people close themselves off emotionally to the world because they don't want to be hurt, and they think that's keeping themselves safe, just like the person that dies with a $100 million in the bank, but no Fred, so I don't know if that answered your question, but that's how you spend your money at speaks, right? And how you spend your time speaks. It does. I just finished a book while I since I finished. I'm almost finished with it. It's a short book. It's called the treasure principle by Randy elkhorn. It's a Christian book about being generous with your money. But he makes this fascinating point in there. I thought was so good. He said, if you were to go buy, let's say you had a $100,000 net worth right now. You got about a $100,000 number. You're going to drop 90% of that on Dell stock. In Dell computers, right? Guess what you're going to be focused on. Every newspaper article, oh Dell, okay, I got to read that one. He said you're giving doesn't follow your interest, your interest follow your giving. So whatever you put money into is what your mind's gonna focus on, which is one of the reasons we all think about real estate a lot because a lot of our money goes into our real estate deal. So we see real estate in the newspaper. We're going to perk up. So he's like, look, if you have, if you're like, oh, I really wish I was more into, you know, I wish I was better at education, helping kids with education. Put a bunch of your money with kids in education. And you will naturally be more interested in that thing. I thought that was such a great point. Yeah, our interests will follow where we spend our money. And our show me your bank account and I'll show you your heart. I think they've said where your treasure is your heart will follow. And I think that's great about what Whitney's doing is by adopting children from a place where they likely wouldn't have had as good of a life as he's going to be able to give them here. It tears your heart away from the intoxicating elements of what wealth can do. And it keeps it grounded and something else and Brandon, that's something I've seen you make very intentional is investing your time, not just into business, but making sure that you're putting it into your family and into the people you influence..

I came from no network, none of my family can invest in real estate. They know wealth whatsoever. A no wealthy friends. And so when I started doing this and started trying to raise money, I raised $250,000 on our first project. And that was all from traveling to conferences and meeting with investors. As hard as I could go. By the next deal, I'm more than doubled that. And by the next deal, almost tripled that. And then by the next deal, we were at like 5 to 7 million. And by the deal after that, I mean, now we're having soft commits.
Biden Calls Evacuation From Afghanistan an Extraordinary Success

"Don't know if that offer's still on the table because obviously he is not signed and he talked about not wanting to negotiate during the season, and that sentiment was echoed by Anthony Rizzo, saying. That playing time to get something done didn't do it. So please don't talk to me now. And with Kris Bryant. We know Scott boards thought he was the next $300 million player. But that was years ago and injuries ago and also a pandemic ago. And they're not keeping all three of them. They might not keep any of the three when it all comes down to it. So it's frustrating for cos when you see the Kris Bryant that she knew in love and M v P and Whenever he worked his Brian lead you to help lead you to world serious Kris Bryant and having the season he's having and next thing you know, he's gonna be heading out the door. But that just seems to be the the edict that Tom Ricketts has given the You know Jed Hoyer right now that we're not paying him, so get the best you can for him. Yeah. Yeah, I think there's a reason why feel eyes didn't stick around. I was talking to Fred about that. You see the writing on the wall kind of a bit of a fire sale for different reasons the pandemic plays into it. For certain. Um so yeah, we'll see who Who is the odd person out? I would have a hard time believing that all three would be out. Would, too. But the fact that Rizzo would seem to be the one that would be the easiest to get done. You know, it hasn't been done yet, And it hasn't been and you know, he gave my team friendly extension one time and apparently, that's not going to be the the narration narrative this time around, right, he's going to get market whatever that is for an older first baseman. With bias When you look at the list, the dozen or so free agents, you know, Linda was signed the big deal, hobbies, not getting that money and his games too inconsistent, But he's also worked the price of admission on any given day, right if you if you buy the ticket you're gonna hopefully see how did buy us do something highlight real, whether it's in the field or swinging on his shoes and connected on a ball that goes out to wait one. So The fact that that didn't get done last year on then Tom Ricketts talked about the told Jesse Biblical losses. That's how much money they're losing. Washes of biblical proportions. Get to your point. You know what? I think you could act with impunity. He injected, do whatever they wanted, when when you first got here, and that was the understanding that no one's gonna interfere. And now that seems that that seems to have changed that now they have walking orders and they have a budget and they're gonna have to adhere to it. Right? Well, that's what happens when you buy a neighborhood around the park and then pandemic it. That's right. I mean, you spent like the future is all yours, and you could Put up the hotels in the big buildings and buy up all the rooftops and it's all great till once in lifetime pandemic comes in, and no one was counting on it. Next thing you know, Team That really depends on Game day revenue as much as a cubs do, and Tom Ricketts says, you know, it's far as teams in either league goes that they're among the top echelon that depends on tickets and concessions. Everything goes along with 40,000 plus We'll talk to Steve Greenberg from sometimes in just a few minutes here is he covers the cops. He was out there yesterday. We'll get his take on the field team hasn't really turned the corner and also all things going on off the field. Paul Simon Sells Catalog to Sony Music Publishing
"Simon was selling his song catalog. Yeah, he's joined the ranks of some other music greats. I think you and I talked about Bob Dylan. Not that long ago, but Paul Simon has has done the same. It was estimated to be about three worth about $300 million, so you can kind of guess Paul Simon's probably in that same neighborhood, But Neil Young did this recently. The study concluded that this was probably because the decrease in funding also decrease the ability for these places to provide contraception family planning and other reproductive services in really. That's one of the major sticking points that i have with republicans. They never want to pay for anything but when that lack of funding causes problems. They're the ones who complain the loudest about the problems that they created. They're always like ugh. Why do we have to pay so much for welfare. And it's just always baffling. It's like yeah. Texas Census Advocates Worry Schedule Confusion Could Lead To Undercounting
"Really big unknown when it comes to the 2020 census. The unknown is when will the counting officially end? This is because of a legal fight in the federal courts over the Trump administration's Schedule for the head count. The confusion is making advocates in some states like Texas really nervous. Here's actually Lopez from Kut and Austin. Kati Marton Lightfoot is with a think tank called Every Texan. She says that there's a big risk. Many Texans won't be counted during this year's census. There. Still, households in the state of Texas who have not responded to the 2020 census, they have not self responded. Nor have they completed the questionnaire of Via that in person follow. Advocates have been scrambling because it's Hard to tell how much time is left to count people. The Trump Administration has been going back and forth about when to stop counting. A federal court intervened, but things were still up in the air, Lightfoot says. It's been confusing. We don't know when this is going to end. But we need to really continue to engage. Our community's advocates and census workers have the most ground to cover in South Texas. Says, vile Valencia with the Texas demographic Center. They're the same areas that have higher concentrations of Hispanics living in more rural conditions, and there's also hire shares of African Americans. The senses guides how much political representation and federal funding communities get. Valencia says this means communities of color in Texas are at risk of losing voting power and money for programs that address issues like poverty and access to health care. Those air disproportionately impacting communities of that, like the Latino community, So if those programs are also under funded because of a lower count, then those communities will be disproportionately affected. A swell people of color in Texas make up a majority of the state's population. So if they're undercounted Kati Marton life would says it will hurt the state as a whole. A conservative estimate is that if we under count our state's population by 1%, we will lose $300 million per year for the next 10 years. Some research shows the state could gain as many as three seats in Congress after the census. But with so many schedule changes, it's hard to say how the count will turn out in the end
