Episode 64A Dave Millbrandt Fools Luck - Teacher for President

"So this idea here is we have our average regular high school government teacher who thinks he knows how things are done. He wins the lottery, and power bodies went in like $400 million, boils out about a quarter million quarter billion or so, about $250 million as what is it going to do with it? Well, he's going to run for president. The problem is, he doesn't bother to tell his wife before he announces it. Doesn't share him with a family. He just has this notion. It's April of the election year. And we follow him along the process of his family come on board, do they not? How'd they get America to come on board with this guy who no one's ever heard of? He's kind of funny in the classroom, but outside of that he's who knows them. So he gets some political experts on the board there and he runs for office. But during this time, he has a struggle spending time with his family. There's a health crisis that homies got to deal with and they had to split time between the campaign trail and that. And it follows him on the trajectory on this

"Stoned the truth is your reaction time. Slow way down. When you're high you not only put yourself in danger but everybody else around you. Stop kidding yourself. If you've been using marijuana in any form do not get behind the wheel if you feel different drive different drive high get a dui paid for by nitsa so lucky we just had mike sando on from the athletic Longtime friend of yours. Apparently i mean you know you go way back on. I'm kidding i'm kidding. But you did. Ask him about dwayne haskins in pittsburgh and i wanted to ask you about dwayne haskins in pittsburgh because he's a fascinating guy to me in you know. There are circumstances where a young guy doesn't work out and it's clear that you have to cut ties for the good of the locker room for the good of a team. Maybe even frankly for the good of a player that was clearly the case last year in washington. I mean we all talked about it on this network when it happened. But you're getting cut a week or two before. A potential must win game to go to the playoffs. You must be doing something really bad but you know as best i can tell i know there was. There was some issues with a female this summer. But nothing nothing with dwayne haskins that it sounds as though i'm just going to say it and and if you have other intel and you could share it that's great but it just sounds as though immaturity and so to me. I was excited when he got another chance with pittsburgh. I thought it was cool spot. I thought we know big ben. We know big. Ben's not going anywhere for at least another year. So what do you make of him. You know yes just you. Just ask mike sando about it so clearly. You must be curious yourself. 'cause i'm i'm intrigued. Talent is there the physical gifts are there and maybe he just needed a reset. And i'm just excited to see what he has in that. Backup role this season and beyond what about you you know. I think that is the thing. I think what we will get out of this a few different things. We look at dwayne haskins pip. Pittsburgh we will see how culture and environment can impact the young player. We also will see what player does and how he responds when you really feels wanted. The environment pittsburgh steelers is warned that they are no nonsense. Heart knows football team and that typically you have to fall on to be. I think as much as we talk about young players and athletes in those things structure matters and so for dwayne haskins. He walks into a very structured environment. He knows exactly what is expected of him and typically guys rise up to the level of expectations. Secondly mike tomlin mack canada. I think is important. The relationships that they have. Mike tomlin obviously took an interest in dwayne haskins matt. Canada is a longtime college coach. He was at maryland when wayne haskins was at ohio state. When you have an affinity for player you have an ability to build a relationship with. Would a player sometimes players respond. I think the reason why the wayne haskins is playing really really well for the pittsburgh steelers. This preseason is because he's in the perfect environment for him. He's in a tight structured environment with people that really have a vested interest in him as a result. He has responded and play the best football that we've seen him play even though it's only preseason well and you know we're just james winston a minute ago and it's not a total apples to apples situation. But yeah that's what i'm saying. Is you know jameis winston. I know we talked about it. And part of it was the system and i know mike sanford is brought up the point..

"Oh i love bet you guys do together with arne and johnny regular listener fox. Moore's radio i. I'm calling her but hey listen. Real quick some. I'm to san my whole life. Poster johnny higgins robert galley all. These guys and i can tell you another workout. So i'm out on the raiders. Go to jon gruden as the move waste of a hundred million dollars. Ten us wasted getting clear mac for picks that have already gone for players. They've already got rid of cleo mac again a second time that so. I'm waiting for jon. Gruden to get fail all over and get new. That i can actually love my team and my home grown up to love so much nico thank you for the call. I want to ask you when you have a one hundred million dollar guaranteed contract. It takes a lot to get on the hot seat. And i don't know that i believe that jon gruden is on the hot seat but like how close are we and we know. The davis family doesn't have you know that generational wealth all that stuff that the the wealth is within the team. Like how close are we to jon. Gruden like starting to feel like some real not like fake internet. Twitter heat like real heat from his bosses and the people that matter with that organization He has a while before there. Because one hundred and guarantee. That's what i'm saying. You have the that regardless so that is a done deal so he has time. I think he's entering year. Four of the deal saw maybe nineteen and twenty three nine hundred twenty one as a as a head coach in thirty one. Nineteen and twenty nine. I think that's what if you just top of your head. That's free nineteen and twenty nine since he he's returned. Nineteen at twenty nine nine hundred twenty nine. Sixty return look since super bowl. He's well under five hundred as a coach. And so i think john gruden's pressure comes from people looking around and wondering is he really a head coach but he won a super bowl and he wanted to. What we tony days players. He got the raiders up in going on and say there were twelve and four his last year rich gannon played at an mvp level. And all of those things but at some point you kind of want to see if the geniuses is.

"Is this a team that you really believe can win the super bowl because i look at them and i say i get it. I get all the talent around him. And i get that. You don't always have to. Have tom brady or aaron rodgers to win a super bowl. I'm just not sure that. I can see this baker mayfield in this season even with all the talent around him winning a super bowl. Look i will say the cleveland browns are built to be a super bowl team. They have everything that you want. Big sturdy offensive line dominant run into tag that allows them to control the tempo to game and dictate the terms to the defense defensively. They're as talented as any defense. We find Myles garrett today cloudy the guys they added at linebacker anthony walker junior The upgrades made in the secondary john. Johnson third Greg newsom coming over to go dinsdale award. They have it all the only x. factor in their run to the title is baker. Mayfield and what. Baker mayfield has to do is baker mayfield. Doesn't need to be a top five quarterback for the cleveland browns to go baker. Mayfield just needs to be able to manage the game. Take care of the ball and in the three or four games where the defense is able to put the game on his shoulders. He has to be able to make enough place for them to win. So i'm saying he doesn't need to average three hundred yards a game. He doesn't need to do that. But if pressed katie making enough plays in the passing game when opponents forced to brown to play left. I mean they take away the run game and they say a number. You're going to have to beat us. Is baker. mayfield good enough to do that. I would say in that system. He absolutely can't say if you really think about who. Cleveland browns are the cleveland. Browns are another version of what the la rams were when they made a super bowl run. Jerry goff was of the deciding factor. How will jerry goff played in. Some of those games would ultimately determine if they won the super bowl. They got to super bowl with jerry. Goff i think the cleveland browns can do the same with the talent that have and baker mayfield quarterback. There's one more team. I want to get to before i do. We do want to hear from you. Guys what teams do you think are overvalued overrated coming into the season let us know one eight seven seven ninety nine on fox.

"This is the couple. You heard the man. Robin chris are out. Bucky brooks aaron torres. Fillon and make sure to follow bucky on twitter at bucky brooks. I am at aaron underscore tours. Lot of football. It's that time of year first of all. how are the travels. You saw the jags. Cleveland game a few days ago. If you did a were you on the call for monday night. I did negative chance to get on the call because it was what we call the national game. He added enough. And so i will be able to call this weekend sunday. The jags go to dallas and travel. So i'd be on the call for that first of all your international. You're not munin mr national. I want to hear this okay. Because you're big time lot going on in the world of football and it is great to just have football back and have real football conversations We talked a lot about a lot of different things. One thing that popped up those kind of interesting to me. Bucky and i want your perspective. You know lamar jackson. We just talked about this. This notion that the league is catching up to him. And my my primary argument is we've been here. He's been the same guy for six seven eight years and nobody is caught up to him yet. Then there's the opposite perspective. Which is josh allen. Josh allen is a guy that got paid. A lot of money This off season and there was actually an anonymous. Nfl agent survey done by the athletic and in that survey one agent was said this. I was surprised to see the money. Josh allen got it might be might really be three years four hundred million but he's still has a thin resume even accounting for his really good twenty twenty so i was actually on air the day that he signed a a an hour so after an. I almost look at him as the opposite of lamar jackson. The idea that we're catching up to the mark jackson. Even though he's been the same guy for six seven years to me josh allen. I'm not saying you don't pay them understand. Quarterbacks get paid it's different deal. It's a different tax bracket all that stuff but my thing would josh. Allen is statistically when you look at coming into the league right what was the big thing is not very accurate. He's got that big arm but he's not very accurate year. One fifty three percent completion percentage year to fifty eight percent. Completion percentage year. Three sixty percent completion percents. I'm just saying you're paying him off the outlier year. So while i think the lamar jack. The the lamar jackson stuff is nonsense. I actually think there's some validity to this of. I understand you got to pay him. He was the mvp candidate last year. But it was also kind of the outlier year in his entire career. It was the l. a. year. And if you go back and look at those other stats from the previous to use the first two years in the league josh allen average fewer than two hundred passing yards per game. And so that's i guess the rub and maybe the frustration..

"Is why people think that. Hey are you talking about the last episode or two episodes ago whatever it was perhaps well. It was the last episode. And let's not go back to episode. So the pre glow what actually creates the glow what creates the pre glow. I just told you the sense of family for me. It's that sort of because we're longtime family. Travelers that sense of family coming. It's like a regular part of the year. Oh and there's a sense you know when you're on disney vacation the it's it's that magic that walt wanted to create by shutting the outside world and that everything is right in the world. Let's not nitpick about this or that you know people go too far. Even we complain about disney south but all that aside you're nitpicking. i am just feeling the glow. The pre glow now we've had four vacations cancelled through the pandemic so far and hopefully the next one free time the lowest stronger will. That's the thing so you go on vacation and now you're talking about the post glow so the post vacation glow you. It's possible to have pre and post vacation. Glow i think definitely is the pre vacation. Glows the anticipation. And you're talking about it with your friends. And i get a feeling that disney vacationers talk more about -cation than they would for regular vacation even though you'll be happy to go to an island somewhere because again addiction and then the post vacation clo- i would hear people during commutes to work just other people. You know you can't help. You're sitting on a gold train like a commuter train or something in some insist. Disney your ears pop up per disneyworld and they're talking about their vacation so people talk about it much more animated that i've seen than they do for regular vacations and that is that glow that you get from disney vacation. So if you haven't gone and you're listening just beware. You may be captured by this glow of reminds me of pinocchio and the blue fairy as she glows right. It's that disney glonass way. I love wishes so much. You may feel very jealous of other people who've gone more recently than you. It's a thing it is a thing and that's part of the globe but does it make you feel better basking in someone else's disney glow while you're waiting for your own is now it makes you feel very much worse t- negative but see then you have to think i'm going i'm going i will go. I will get there and then this is where you run into the problem. How much glow is too much glow. So if you think of average walt disneyworld vacation or disneyland vacation where you're traveling there. You're staying in a disney resort hotel. You're visiting disney parks. What is it among those things that creates the glow stahl nostalgia. First time. i don't know. I don't remember my first time. But is there a specific thing about the disney vacation itself that creates more glow. Is it the parks. Where does the glow come from. Well it's disneyworld. It's not like when you're going to wonderland you're not entering an immersive expedo for listeners. Wonderland is our local theme park at like six flags magic basically the same thing but it's different because it's disney world disneyland. You're entering a universe of possibilities. It's an immersive experience different than just a new place in the outside world..

"My house, and I said in there for at least a couple hours to three hours a day and jamming with loops and All kinds of stuff just to keep you know my chops up and it's been really, really great for my plan. Keep listening. Toe I heart radio firm or Neil, Sean and all your favorite artists. Just about 6 47. Brian comes good morning and good morning to you ever since the night he was scheduled to open in April that would usually it would be in March. Typically, the soccer season starts at the beginning of March. We were told West End Stadium. The $250 million showpiece would open at that time. But now Major League Soccer says that they're going to start the season about a month later. Then what they have in the past, and no specific dates have been given yet, though it looks like the opening is being pushed back at least until April. So we don't know when that new Western Stadium will open. We do know that it Was supposed to be ready for early March and the beginning of the year. But now looks like soccer fans in town or people who want to see you know what? That new stadium looks like. You're gonna have to wait. Perhaps indefinitely. They're having some labor issues with the soccer players. They could impact the start of the season. But yesterday MLS basically said that you know, we usually start in March. We ain't doing that this year. So maybe April, though, is it cope? Covert plays his part of the reason It's a big part of it. There's a contract issues as well. That are playing into this they have. Do they extend the season. I cancel games. "Did you have any thoughts on that. Oh yeah. I mean it. Honestly like if they if they're trying to get ahead and the streaming world like it it would show good faith towards their customers if they did package all these things in the one that way you know you're not missing out on content. A lot of people subscribed. Hbo because they want to see like the newest and the best content and hbo. Max seems to have all that. So if i were an hbo subscriber i would cancel my subscription. And then go to hbo max and you know as opposed to the twenty or thirty dollars a month package on cable now. The thing that hbo go ahead. I for h. Hbo they kind of lost a lot of viewers. When because they didn't have anything. Lined up tame thrones place and nothing has really done well since then and they kind of lost a lot of sports like hbo. Boxing has gone. They don't have that contract anymore. I don't know if any other sports contracts but world Yeah the watchmen. Is something that i think was the last thing that had that good this year as far as that's the large his dark materials got some critical acclaim and it was renewed for. I think three and a final season three. I mean it's not like. I enjoyed the show but i don't see that being enough to really like drive people that hbo in droves you know not a pop culture phenomenon. Like game. of thrones was and watchmen was essentially by the creator. Saying that. that's one off. I'm hoping that they'll find our way through. Possibly do return to that but i have a feeling that is going to be just a one off because they are very adamant about it even hearing and seeing all the success from that critically and also viewer wise. I think that's gonna be it for the watchman. Unfortunately because i think it was just such a great series. I'm hoping they will follow up. But i don't think i don't hold out much. Hope for that. Which is unfortunate. But yes i know max is going to be the way of the future for them going forward. They're going to have to..

"Was the CEO of the company. It had been founded well over a century earlier by her great grandfather. For years, Gail Food sold the standard dairy items. Butter milk ice cream in the 19 sixties, They got into putting cheese sauces and, more recently, Dale Foods kept keeping up with the times high tech food manufacturing, meaning low acid aseptic processing and packaging using robots. Which creates shelf stable foods without the use of preservatives process is also useful for products like weight loss shakes and iced coffee drinks. Under Catherine Gale Gale Foods had more than 300 employees and was doing nearly $250 million a year in sales. But there were a lot of challenges. Why, because the food industry is incredibly competitive. Their new competitors all the time. Also new technologies, new consumer preferences, so to plot a path forward, Gail turned to one of the most acclaimed consultants in the world. I'm Michael Porter. I'm a professor at Harvard Business School, and I work most of the time on strategy and competitiveness. Porter is in his early seventies as an undergrad. He studied aerospace and mechanical engineering. He got an MBA and a PhD in business economics, so he understands both systems and how things are made Within those systems. He's written landmark books called Competitive Strategy, and on competition, He is sighted more than any other scholar in the field. He's best known for creating a popular framework for analyzing the competitiveness of different industries. The framework that I introduced many years ago. Sort of says that there's these five forces. These five forces help determine just how competitive given industry is. Five forces are the threat of new entrance, the threat of substitute products or services, the bargaining power of suppliers the bargaining power of buyers. Hand rivalry among existing competitors. Not there yet. But if you want to jump ahead and consider how these forces applied to our political system going to say them again, the threat of new entrance, the threat of substitute products or services, the bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers and rivalry among.

The FTC is looking into Twitter's privacy practices. The probe is related to what the Social network did with the phone numbers and email addresses that users provided for account security. Last fall, Twitter admitted it had been using that data to target people with ads for years. It's said that was an error and it would stop the practice. Now. The FTC is investigating whether Twitter violated a 2011 agreement made with the agency not to mislead consumers about how it uses their information. In a securities filing.
