Bearing Fruit During Hard Times
"God is not called us to be busy. You can't find one scripture that says just be as busy as you can't I applaud busy us be busy but there's all kinds of scriptures that tell us that we are to bear good fruit for God and to be honest I think dizziness is one of the biggest problems that we have. Today and the world is not GonNa Change. and. If it does, it's like that they just get worse. So. We're the ones that have to do the changing. We have to take control of our schedules and our lives and learn how to put our time into what our purpose is. A man. You all have a purpose here. And? It is to bear good fruit for God I mentioned yesterday that when I was flying in I was just looking out the window as we were preparing to land, and this is not any great brand new news but it just I had such a strong reminder that so often. We get this thinking that God is here to serve us and to to help us to solve our problems and to meet our needs and but actually it should be the other way around. You know. We should understand that we're here to serve. God, we are kids representatives in the earth. The Bible says, can you get a hold of that today? You are a personal representative of God. You are representing God to all the people out there that don't know him. You are an ambassador. For, Christ and so what God wants us to do is not be busy but bear good fruit. And make sure that we are putting our time. Into what our purpose is and we're talking about bearing good fruit and really just a couple of different areas. So as to not bring in so much to get confused first of all as believers, it's very important that we work with the Holy Spirit and learn how to let the fruit of the spirit flow through which Lov. Joy. Peace patience kindness gentleness humility self control, and all those other beautiful things that we have a tendency to have problems with. The second way that we want to bear good fruit is by doing as much as we possibly can for other people even people that would be on your enemy list. It is especially powerful. Now, listen it is especially powerful when you do something good for somebody who has treated you bad. You're not so sure about that. Are you? I'm GonNa talk to this side of the room and safe there more spiritual than you. Can. You just imagine for a moment? How mad it makes the devil? When somebody has hurt you and treated you wrong and then you hear that they've got a problem. And you reach out. To help them. In some way. I use this example a lot, but it's a good one. Suppose you've got somebody at work that just has really MS treated you. They've talked about you don't talk to you. They make fun of you because you're a Christian and they do everything they can to undermine you, and so you find out that their car motor went out of their car and it's going to be in the shop for a long time. Let's just say that God would put it on your heart to offer to. Pick. them up every morning and take them home. And it's like way out of your way, you're going to have to leave early to do it and get home late. Well see we would just blow that off. That can't be God. That can't be God. Well, let me tell you. That is exactly the kind of stuff that God polls. And it is exactly the kind of stuff. He wants US doing. Because, the Bible says that we're to be good to our enemies to show that we are children of our father in heaven. There's a scripture that says. You're not doing anything especially, you're just good to people that are good to you. But. If you're good the people that have not treated you, right. They don't know what to do with that. Now, this Christianity that you've got David making fun of their seeing the real fruit of and it starts to kind of change their mind a little

"Chapter Seventy two is a powerful prayer. Four, the King of Israel, and the Old Testament, and there's there's definitely specific things in this psalm that relate to God's people in the Old Testament and the ruler over God's people in the Old Testament. But the picture of adjust and good king. Is something we certainly are compelled to pray for in the leaders of our government of any government. So what I WANNA do instead of just reading this Psalm, the first seven verses of Psalm Chapter Seventy two, and then don about it and praying according to it i WanNa pray through it and so I just want to read and as I read through it, lead us to pray right now for just good righteous leaders that. God would provide those kinds of leaders as were in the middle of a presidential election as we're thinking about how to steward our vote is followers of Jesus in the United, states in an election. But regardless of where we live to pray for good wise just leaders for God's grace and current leaders, they might be good wise unjust and for God's grace in future leader. So let's let's let's pray. How Would Augustine Read Genesis? with Dr. Benjamin Quinn
"GONNA it I'M GONNA go fast and I and fly high. So Augusta Guston when he's converted around the year three, eighty six and he's about he's in his early thirties by this point the very first commentary that he turns to ride is actually one on genesis and he does so against a group of people called the mannequins that he'd. been a part of for a little over a decade and very quickly after coming to Christ he sees the manatees not as not as reputation or not as personal enemies, per se but theologically, they really were enemies because they undo. So much of what's true and rich and good in Christ centred about the scriptures and especially in this directly begins to answer your question especially as it relates to the doctrine of creation. So over Agustin's lifetime first of all, there's development in his thoughts and there's a development and how he approached his genesis one through eleven genesis one through three specifically about five different times he addresses it the very first time. If you look at that early commentary, just a couple a couple of years after he's converted to be honest it's kind of weird he does all kind of crazy allegorical stuff he's. He's really pushing back against some extremities of Manichean thaw. By the time you get to his much more mature though in this comes about the you know the works that Augustine most popular for Confessions City of God on the Trinity on Chris Easing, these kind of what we would call his mature works by the time he looks at Genesis one. Through eleven at that point here are some of the the. Distinctive of his interpretation that you're gonNA notice first of all he's going to be very clear on a very healthy doctrine of creation. What I mean by that is he's not going to see something like the spirit world bad in the mid or the material world is bad spirit world is good. He's GonNa work really really hard to push against that. There remains some measure of a spiritual side may be. Better than the material saw and whether that's true or not. Another point is still be some of that but he's going to always remember that sort of bad ten years of Manichean life that he experienced and when he returns to genesis one through eleven, it's always gonna be sort of in back of his mind and who he's arguing with so to speak. Yeah, secondly, he's also going to always be deeply. Christ centered. As shouldn't surprise us. But maybe for some of your ears when they hear the word Christ centered in terms of interpretation or they may think about ten years old and I want to say, no, that's about I. Don't Know Nineteen Hundred Years old somewhere somewhere in there. And Augusta and when he's turning to any part of scripture. But especially, the Old Testament Psalms particular genesis one through eleven he's going to see in the beginning in fact right there he's GonNa Circle that in his Latin tax going to say that in that beginning the way that his text reads there's Jesus Right. There's the same beginning John's talking about the same beginning to Colossians, one is referring to that's Jesus there in fact his. Commentaries are summarized. He called him the Toda's Chris because he saw the whole Christ there and that's true. Really of his interpretation of all the Old Testament. The third thing I would say on that Kyle is my favorite part of that I've learned from Augusta. My favorite part is that he always interprets scripture with what he calls the double love in mind. This is nothing more than the great commandment He has in his little book on her midday. Scott on Christian, teaching our on on Christian doctrine. He says any interpretation of scripture that doesn't undergird love for God and love for neighbor is an invalid interpretation. Period. Now. There's a lot. There's a lot of questions. There's a lot to be said that's not the end of the conversation, but I always hear that as if Jesus is right that there's nothing if he is because he's Jesus if if he's right that there's nothing more important about living in his world. Then to love God, and to love other people, the net applies to everything in life including how we interpret the Bible, not just how we parent and how we pass through and how we were all the those things too that even how we interpret the Bible Jesus you said all along the prophets point to me. So when you go back to those also recognize the most important thing about living in my world is that you love on love of people. So if you've if you draw from any interpretation of scripture something that you can't draw straight lines to love forgotten left for the people you've you somehow fallen off the radar, you've. Fallen off the wagon. So to speak and always been sort of guides and directs is not only interpretation but then application scripture. Yeah. Man That's so
Jesus - the one who would drink the cup of God’s wrath
"So. All of this has huge implications for how we should talk and think about how Jesus understood his death. What did Jesus think his death meant how did he talk about it and how does it fit into this will conversation. So remember the meaning of the Cup of God's anger in in the prophets there's an important story in Matthew. Chapter. Twenty. Where two of his disciples their mom comes up to him to Jesus and asks if two of her sons can be Jesus as like special special princes when he becomes the King of Israel helicopter parents. Just, be a good mom. So. Wealth is great. So. Will you know command in your kingdom that my Tucson's will sit on your right and left Jesus answers. Sorry you just simply don't know what you're asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink and the two men said to him? Oh yes we're able and he said to them you know you actually will drink my cup but to sit on my right hand or left sorry, that's not my authority give but to be on my right and my left that is for those whom it has been prepared by my father this is a little hint forward to criminals. Jesus. Yes. But to Jesus thrown in other words when comes in his kingdom, he will have one on his right and one on his left and when in the Gospels is that moment happen? Why did it all the Gospel Authors? Tell us that he had one on his right and one on his left when he was Chris when he's crucified yes. That's right which is a type of upside down and thrown. Yeah. That's right. So already here he's hinting that the cup refers to his coming execution. And many of his disciples will actually lay down their lives for their witness to Jesus I. think that's what it means. You will drink my cup, but his point is that the way I'm going to become king over Israel over the nation's is by drinking the cup and there's only one place. Where that Jesus getting that image from. But the the passages we looked at in a previous episode, which is Isaiah Fifty one Jeremiah twenty-five in Psalm seventy five with three main cup of passages of Gaza. If they were familiar with the Hebrew. Bible would they know exactly what he was saying here? Are you able to what they have understood that? Well, yeah. In the moment in the actual moment of the conversation. Yeah. I don't know Jesus was a ridler he spoke in scriptural language and the riddles all the time the Gospel authors want the reader to pick it up because Jesus is going to use the image again in a couple of chapters. So what is he saying what did authors want us to pick up? Are you able to? Remind me again about drinking the Cup yet drinking the cup is what Jeremiah says will happen to Jerusalem when it surrounded by Babylonian armies because they're king broke a treaty with Babylon and they've been unfaithful to God. So drinking the cup, is another way of saying God handing you over to the consequences of your decisions, which ultimately it seems like our death throughout the biblical story line, not not as in the consequences. Of Sin are death in the trite way we think about it. But in the story line being handed over is kind of simultaneous with and specifically being handed over to be conquered by pagan armies. What would it mean then for Jesus to drink the of? That's exactly right. You gotTa keep on Reading You gotTa let the story. Tell you what she's means because he brings it up again in the garden Africa semi. Well, actually skipping his story at Passover. Right at the last supper when he brings out the cup and he says, This Cup is the new covenant in my blood. So he gives them a cup to drink and they're the this cup imagery is really rich. He's borrowing imagery from Covenant Making Ceremonies and the Old Testament likening his blood, the blood of the animals that would be offered up to God in the making. Of Covenant. Then after that, he goes out to the Garden of Disseminating Matthew Twenty six and in the in the garden, what he's praying is this it's in Verse Thirty Nine in Matthew Twenty. Six He says three times Matthew says, Jesus, prayed my father it's possible May. This Cup be taken from me but not my desire, but your desire be done so Jesus keeps talking about. His coming death as drinking the Cup on behalf of his people. That's his conception of death and drinking the cup in say Isaiah fifty one is image of experiencing the consequences of God turning his face Yup and those consequences are God allowing foreign armies to overtake his Covenant People. That's the concrete expression that it takes in history and so Jesus is using this phrase. We know it's intense. We know he's excited about it. Yeah. So Jesus is going to experience. God turning his face away. Jesus knows that if Israel turns away from his message that they're going to be destroyed. He's been making that crystal clear all throughout his warnings of Judgment. He intentionally goes to Jerusalem for Passover during the feast week when they celebrate their liberation from a pagan oppressor Egypt. And he intentionally goes there and he poked the bear, it doesn't just poke the bear. He likes stabs the bear jabs at for a week. You're. Provoking, the temple leaders, the city leaders I you know he's intentionally creating problem and he keeps saying throughout this week, I'm going to drink the cup. I'm coming here to drink the cup. So Jesus is going to put himself in the place of faithless covenant, breaking Israel and experienced defeat at the hands of pegging armies on their behalf. If, you just think through with all these images mean to drink. The Cup means to be conquered by PAGANO, presser job because of covenant violation Israel here specifically Jerusalem the warning is given. That Rome is going to burn it down and takeover death destruction and. What Jesus is predicting that's going to happen is he's going to experience that he's going to experience what it's like to be. destroyed. By the Roman oppressor. That's right. He's GonNa Drink That Cup

Leaders Marked by Humility (1 Kings 3:514)
"Kings chapter three. Versus five through fourteen. Listen. To these verses that describe a pivotal moment. At the beginning of Solomon's leadership as king. Add. Given the Lord appeared to Solomon in Dream by night and God said, ask what I shall give you. And Solomon said you've shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father because he walked before you in faithfulness and righteousness in an uprightness of heart toward you. And you've kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. and. Now Oh Lord my God you've made your servant King in place of David my father although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in and your is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen a great people too many to be numbered accounted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to governor people. That I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this? You're a great people. Please the Lord that Solomon had asked this. In. God. said to him because you've asked this. and. Have not asked for yourself long-life riches or the life of your enemies. But of asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right Behold I now do according to. Your. Word. Behold I give you a is an discerning mind so that none like you has been before you unlike you shall arise after you. I give you also have not asked both riches and honour so that no other kingshill compare with you all your days. And if you walk in my ways keeping my statutes in my commandments. Father David walked then I will link then your days. What a picture? Of Humility in a king and a leader of a people. Saying to God, I'm only a child. I don't know how to go out or come in. I'm in the middle of this great people that you've called me to. To realize as king that he could not lead govern this people. Based on his own wisdom, his own abilities he needed help from God and so we asked for one thing an understanding mind. To discern between good and evil as governance. and. Here we see. One of the greatest needs for any political leader. If not in a sense de greatest need. Wisdom. Wisdom that flows from humility before God. Wisdom that flows from. All of God fear of God. Wisdom that knows the most important thing in governing is discerning between good and evil is what we see in the purpose of govern Romans Chapter Thirteen got his instituted government for the promotion of good among the people who are governed for protection against evil. Among, people who are governed and so for wisdom. To govern in a way that promotes good and protects against evil. This is what we must pray for in our leaders in our leaders now. And our leaders in the future. So God we pray. For current political leaders at all levels. In the United States from the White House to. Governors across states to. People, two men and women. Senate and House of Representatives and different chambers of government in states and local levels in. Courts God we pray for wisdom in all of these leaders we pray for discernment God we pray for. Many many of them. To a humbly come before you and ask for wisdom God we pray for humility and our leaders. We pray for the fear of you in our leaders, God replay for that bring more and more and more of our leaders to fear you. We prayed on bleak come before you to seek you for help when it comes to discerning. What is right? And good, and to not lead according to their own ideas definitions about what is right and good God. Prayer that we pray that you would work in their hearts to bring him to humbly fear you seek wisdom from you find in. You. In God, we pray even for. God less leaders. Who are rebelling against you? Pray replay replay, change their hearts Scotteri pray that you would bring them to humility before you see their need for you. And God, we pray that until that day you would grant common grace that even though they are not seeking you God, you would give them wisdom to discern between what is good and what is evil. God We pray for your common grace in leaders who are not following you right now that our governments might be lead in good ways according to your sovereign hand. And God is we pray for? Wisdom in our leaders we pray for wisdom in our lives. Got Every pray that is we vote. Is. We use our voice particularly citizens in the United States and selection Gary Radio would give us wisdom. Gives for his done to discern between good and evil, and in the part you've given us to govern with the voice and vote. You've given US help us to know how to use it. Best for your glory and this fallen world we need your wisdom we humble ourselves before you we seek you in rephrase you with praise you for your promise in every area of our lives that when we ask for wisdom, you give it to us. So he asked for wisdom today in all that we do. Even as we pray and plead for that kind of wisdom in our political leaders in Jesus name we pray.
Fear God by Keeping His Law (Deuteronomy 17:1420)
"Chapter seventeen versus fourteen through twenty. When you come to the land, the larger God is giving you and you possess it in dwell on it, and then say I was set a king over me like all the nations that are around me. You may indeed set a king over you whom the Lord your will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set is king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you who is not your brother only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses. Since the Lord has said to you, you shall never return that way again and he shall not acquire many wives for himself lest his heart turn away nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall right for himself in a book, a copy of this law approved by the levite priests and it shall be with him and he shall read it in all the days of his life that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes and doing them. That his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers. And that he may not turn aside from the commandment either to the right hand or left so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children in Israel. Now, as we are praying leading up to presidential election. In the United States on be careful in reading from Deuteronomy to make sure it's clear. This is a unique time in Old Testament, history when God is speaking about a king among his people and how that king should rule and lead in the structure of the people of Israel. And we WANNA be careful when we're reading the Old Testament ought to just put in the United States and the place of Israel here and think okay. So this is what we should do in all these specifics at the same time. As God gives instructions for the leaders among his people we see characteristics. that. God desires in all leaders among any people characteristics that we see throughout the rest of the Old Testament in the new testament particularly think about leaders in the church. And ultimately exemplified in Jesus and his character. and. So when I read Dirani Seventeen. Meditate on these verses. I'm driven to pray. Well, let's let's pray God. We we praise you one for setting up kings the way you did for the good. Of Your people in the Old Testament, God we think about how so many kings fell short of what you described in your word here and devastating effects that had on your people, and so we pray as citizens of. The country we are in specifically most of us as citizens of the United States. So God we pray. For leaders who will hear? And Obey your word. God, we pray for that. We pray for leaders who will be sensitive to your word. Not The foolish ways of this world. We pray for leaders. To avoid greed. We pray. For leaders who? Avoid adultery and sexual morality. We pray for leaders who spurn idolatry who fear and submit to your authority overall. God reprieve for leaders who demonstrate humility. Before you for the people they lead. Oh God for all these characteristics we pray in our current leaders and future leaders God we ask for we. For we. Pray that you would. Work in leaders. Hearts present and future. To create. To foster humility and fear of you in submission to your therapy and. Sensitivity. To your word. And a fleeing in God we pray for leaders who flee greed and who flee adultery and sexual immorality who flee idolatry and who lead in Romans thirteen kind of way for the good of the people they govern. And for the protection of people against evil? Oh God we ask for leaders like this and as we do we are so thankful Jesus that you are ultimate leader. You Are Lord, you are king. We praise you for you are the only perfect king. You're the only perfect Lord you are the one in whom we place all our trust and all our hope and you're the one who to whom we give all. Of our allegiance. We love you Jesus, we love you all the more when we see the inadequacy of leaders around is we so thankful that you're our leader and we help us to point people to you as we talk about political candidates and all kinds of different issues in an election gathering prayed help us to point people to you the just and good leader who Humble yourself and became obedient to death on a cross for our sins and you've been exalted by God given the name that is above every name that your name every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess help us to point people to you and your Lordship your leadership above all during these days. In your name Jesus, our leader and Lord we pray Amen.
Men and Women in Genesis 2 with Hannah Anderson
"So let's just go ahead and go right at it because this is something that I feel like I've heard and I remember I heard this growing up not from my father he had better sense than that. But I heard this from other men in a church that I was growing up in will look guide created man I hear and that is that means that men should be that there I in society their first everywhere else this is what God intended because the of the ordering of creation God created man I hear are we to make something out Of this and if so what have been the what have been the wrong interpretations of this and what are some of the ways that immediately when we start off here if we start off on the wrong foot that's going to influence the rest of how we view this passage I mean Hannah are we to make anything out of man being created. First Year. I think if we actually read the passage, man is created i. This is what I mean. So often and just word. Because I it certainly looks like. This is how I liked to approach things. It's like here's ABC and I'm GonNa say let's go see. So let's find see one of the things that we struggle with when we come and start ask questions of this passage is our questions are formed not necessarily by the tax but by our context so we bring questions that we want answers to that had been shaped by our kind of cultural and sociological experience and. When I say that man was not created I, I mean that the garden was created i. so the creation was created I and you can't understand or even begin to ask questions about the man and woman until you understand the placements and they're calling to the world at large. So I think a lot of times when we come, we bring these questions about the relationship between men and women and they are constructed. By a lifestyle is very detached from the earth and is very detached from larger creation, and so we come with questions that are shaped by radical individualism and kind of a distance and a detached from the rest of the creation. So we come asking these kind of oppositional questions about men versus women rather than looking for an answer that makes sense of more of an organic relationship, not only with each other but with. The creation as well, and so before we even get to the question of manding created women's creation, we have to understand that they emerged out of a creation that already had order and logic within it before they came on the scene. So the reality is something like the category of maleness and female nece existed before human man and human woman came listening. We'll let's pause right there because I think that's pretty significantly said. Because I think that you're one hundred percent right that when we get to creation the creation story if we if we if we are going to zoom pass all of the logistics questions, we've done a previous episode about how Genesis One is primarily answering the questions of who created why not. How the method questions. But if we zoom past those typically resume, pass them to get to the creation of Adam and Eve right we're like we're right there. So it's like, yeah, guide created everything. He created. Yeah, Yada Yada Yada Yada. Okay. There's some stars. There's a heavenly body which is not a good tagline for sale evidently to JEB. But. But, there is the creation of man and woman and that that somehow that's that's where the juice is. That's where the meat is. Let's get there as fast as possible, but you're saying and I think this is really helpful point and I don't think it's something that I have even considered significantly, which is these categories of maleness and female female nist that. Are Now going to be distinctively. Would we say applied to the unique creation of Adam and eve? Is that the right way to say that? Well, Adam and eve absolutely are distinct from the rest of the creation I think this is a flaw when people begin to think and natural law categories where they begin to think about how male and female nist. Operates in broader creation the temptation is just to apply that to human beings and say, well, male birds do this female birds. This therefore, humans operate out there male female females at, but you're right there is distinct calling of the man and woman, and that informs their maleness and their female rather than the reverse. So you have two things happening where they. Are In partnership emerging out of this creation that already has a logic that came from the creator to begin with. But then they are being tasked as the Co regents of this creation, they are being entrusted with the very thing that they emerged from, and so you do have this kind of paradox in play where they are not separate from the creation. And yet, they are acting as image bearers ruling and reigning over the guard and carrying caretaking for this arden. So I think it's important. We asked him former questions that were aware of both sides of the paradox
Justice Ordained by God (Exodus 18:2123)
"Chapter Eighteen versus twenty, one, twenty, three. Moreover, look for able men from all the people men who fear God who are trustworthy in Haiti bribe. And play such men over the people as chiefs of thousands of hundreds of fifties and tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you and they will bear the burden with you. If you do this God will direct you. You will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace. So these verses describe very early on in the Bible, how God set up. A structure for justice to be carried out among his people for people to be judged and all these different cases that were all coming to Moses, and through JETHRO. Moses's father in law. We see these instructions to appoint many different leaders as chiefs over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tins to judge the people and their qualifications. Scott said look for able men from all the people who fear God. And who are trustworthy and hate a bribe. What a what a picture out of all the things that could have been listed right there. Look for leaders who fear God. And who are trust worthy? And hate a bribe who are not gonNA put. Their advantage over someone else being judged rightly. Not, GONNA seek selfish gain in that way, and if you do this God says, you will be directed by me. You'll be able to endure. This is for Moses good as leader have other leaders, and all those people also will go to their place and peace. Don't. We want that we want justice and he's To be, evident. In. Whatever country we live in? So we pray. God, we we know that this was a unique picture in the Old Testament as you set up. This structure among your people but as we read this today, particularly as followers of Jesus in the United States. As well as other countries but. The United States were going to this election God weep pray. Ask for leaders. Who Fear You. Re Ask for leaders who are trustworthy. Who Don't seek selfish gain. God, we ask for that Jerry we ask for this for our current leaders. And Our future leaders. God we we pray for leaders who are in positions of power and influence right now who know you? Who've trusted in you? And your salvation who are walking with you gotTa repay that you would shrink them and help them to lead. The fear of you. Help them to continue to be trustworthy in a way that reflects the character of Christ not to seek selfish gain. God We, pray for other leaders who don't know you right now who are not walking with you if not placed their faith in Jesus who are not followers of Jesus God, we pray that you would bring them to fear you. He are reprinted by your grace. They would be trustworthy leaders that they would not seek selfish gain but seek the good of others in good according to you. Good according to your word in your character in your wisdom. Not according to our foolishness according to what is right in our own is God. We pray for leaders like this and for Justice and peace that flows from leadership like this we is for this country God, save us from ourselves, save us from leaders who don't fear you God save us from leaders who are not trustworthy and who do seek selfish gain, God we pray for good leaders in our country. According to this picture of goodness that we see in exodus chapter eighteen. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
Seek the Things Above (Colossians 3:117)
"The passage to meditate on and pray according to today is Colossians chapter three verse one through Seventeen, and the prayer guide says to pray for all that you see in these verses to be true in your life and your relationships with others during these days. Repent of any ways that these verses have not been true in your life. So. Instead of like we normally do on this podcast is reading a verse than Santa Things about it in praying according to it i WanNa pray through the passage so colossians three one through seventeen savagely a bit longer, but I'm just going pray through it almost. Reading the passage as a prayer for these things to be true in our lives and our relationships with others especially during these days. And the God would convict us. By his word and his spirit of ways that we need to repent. In ways that these verses have not been true in our lives. So. Let's pray. Colossians chapter three starting in verse one. Oh God. We praise you. That we have been raised with Christ. So help us seek the things that are above were Christ. Is seated at the right hand of God. Oh God. Amid. So much going on in the world around. US help us to set our minds on things that are above not on things that are on earth knowing that we have died in our life is hidden with Christ right now in God. When Christ to his our life appears no, we will also appear with him glory. We can't wait for that day. So help us today to put to death. Whatever is earthly in a Scott help us to turn from repent of sexual immorality. Impurity. Passion. Evil Desire. And covetousness, which is idolatry. Knowing. On account of these, your wrath is coming. Knowing that we once walked in these things when we were living in them but now we've put them away God, help us to put away anger. Wrath. Malice. Slander. All obscene talk from our mouths. Help us not to lie to one another speak truth. Seeing that we put off the old self with its practices and put on the new self which is being renewed in knowledge after your image as our creator knowing that here, there is not Greek and Jew circumcised uncircumcised barbarian skit the and slave free. But Jesus is all in all your replay for this awareness and understanding and unity as your church we prayed you and help us to put. As your chosen ones, holy and beloved compassionate hearts we pray for these things for kindness humility. MEEKNESS and patience. Help us to bear with one another. And if one has a complaint against another to forgive each other as you have forgiven us and above all these help us to put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And may the peace of Christ rule in our hearts to which we have been called in one body and help us to be thankful in all circumstances? To let, the, word, of Christ. Dwell in us. Richly. reteach and monitor another in all wisdom as we sing songs and hymns and spiritual songs as your people with thankfulness in our hearts to you and whatever we do, what whatever we do during these days specifically leading up to this election and and our voting and how we stood our vote in everything we do and say in word or deed help us to do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to you our father threw him. Thank you for this passage of scripture. May. Be. True in our lives we pray in, Jesus? Name. Amen
What is Natural Moral Law? with Dr. Ross Inman
"So here's the big question what is natural moral law and what does it have to do with genesis? Excellent question was I see it I go conception of natural moral law. Entails at least the following to commitments. So the first commitment would be something like this. That God has built into the natural created order a moral dimension. So just as you might think, a piece of wood has sort of natural grain to it that. So to the moral realm has a natural grain too it that's grounded in God's creation intentional purposes. So, that would be the first tenant which all impact here in a second, and then the second thing would be that God has so created human beings with unique capacity to both know and live in accordance with this moral grain for the sake of living well I think one passage that's absolutely insightful in biblically rich which I wish we had more time to unpack is proverbs eight, twenty to thirty six. You might be asking what is proverbs eight, twenty to thirty, six with Genesis wanted to help to show you. So. If you permit me, let me just read very quickly a twenty to thirty six proverbs chapter eight. So this is what twenty two says. The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of all ages ago. I. Was set up at the first before the beginning of the Earth when there were no depths, I was brought forth when there were no springs abounding with water before the mountains have been shaped before the hills I was brought forth before he had made the earth with its fields or the first of the dust of the world when. He established the heavens there when he drew a circle on the face of the deep when he made firm the skies above when he established the fountains of the deep when he assigned to the sea, its limit so that the waters might not transgress his command when he marked out the foundations of the Earth then I was beside him like a master workman and I was daily his delight rejoicing before him always rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children, of ma'am. And now it was sons listen to me blessed are those who keep my waves here instruction and be wise and do not neglect it less. It is the one who listens to me watching daily at my gates waiting beside my doors for whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord but he fails to find mean injures himself. So a proverbs aid is is a wonderful passage that a uses a literary device here with respect to the personification of wisdom. So the idea your calls that we have a god has this intimate companion here. From the first act of creation onwards in in its denoting the fact that all of God's creative acts from the creation of the starry expanse to the separation of male and female there founded on and patterned after God's wisdom. So God. In proverbs eight here is is depicted as an expert craftsman master Workman's beautiful picture really So he's sort sort of starts with this meticulous plan. Any sort of skillfully fashions out of an unstructured pile of material something with strength. And Integrity it's actually really interesting here in proverbs eight, we have in a mere eight verses, a span of eight from twenty to thirty. There are eleven verbs here that denote God's conferral of order structure and pattern on creation. This is what I was referencing here a natural grain to the cosmic order. So for example, God's set up. He brought forth. He shaped he made he established he drew a circle very interesting sort of craftsmanship. Pictures. Here he made firm he assigned a limit any marked out the boundaries of his creation with skillful precision. And Care. So you have you have these. Images that portray God is the master workmanship in you just can't read proverbs eight Kyle without without your mind going back to genesis one through two. So it was beautiful about proverbs eight is just naturally points back to the original creation account were I think God's skillful craftsmanship in creation is on full display. In particular, we see in Genesis a genesis chapter one God will separating things apart and he's binding them together again, his craftsmanship on full display here. So for example, in Genesis, one, God separating light from darkness, he's separating the waters above from the waters below the expanse he's separating day from night he's separating see from land dwelling creatures sue separating. From the rest of the creation, he separating male from female, and he's separating of the seventh day of rest from the rest of the six days of his pre more. So you see him not only separating apart, but you actually see him interestingly enough uniting things together as well. And I think there are three important ways your kyle in in which we see God his master craftsmanship on display in binding things together and giving them natural integrity in strength. So first of all we have genesis one, twenty, seven. When God Unites Himself to human beings by making them in his divine image were made to reflect the radiance in the purposes of God. So there's something about the way that we are constructed Kyle. that. That makes the case that God is our final ultimate end. He is our greatest. Good. Were made in the image and likeness of this being who is a relational through and through and that nothing else can satisfy but union with God's
God's Word is Wisdom (James 1:58)
"Chapter one versus five through eight. If any of you lacks wisdom. Let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith with no doubting for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that has driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, he is a double minded man unstable in all his ways These verses are so good as we approach a presidential election for those who are listening who are followers of Jesus in the United States. And wondering. How To vote who to vote for and wrestling through different issues different dynamics in that for some, it seems clear for others it feels less clear Suda come to James Chapter One, verse five and hear God say if you lack wisdom ask me because I give generously to all without reproach and it will be given him. I what a promised obviously with anything wherever walking through where we need wisdom or need discernment. To Look to God into know into believe, he promises to give the wisdom we need. So as we think about how to Stewart a vote in presidential election, we have a promise a direct promise from God that he will give us the wisdom. We need to apply his word to how we steward our vote I, WANNA WANNA. Comfort, what an encouragement and then on a whole `nother level even as we pray for leaders and our country for current leaders for future leaders. This passage drives us to pray that they would ask and seek God for wisdom. Like this is the whole picture, we see all over scripture I think about Solomon and I kings chapter three as he is leading God's people and he says I don't know how to carry out my duties. Please give me wisdom and God is so pleased by that request and gives them wisdom and far more than that when you get proverbs and you see over and over and over again, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. So to look to God to trust in God to seek God for wisdom, we want to pray for this and our political leaders and church leaders in leaders of homes like in every kind of leadership in one of our lives for that matter like what a promise from God with so many implications for our lives and for the world around us. So let's let's do it. Let's ask God for wisdom God we we come to you directly based on your word to us in James Chapter One, Verse Five You promised to give wisdom when we ask. So right now we're asking in faith not doubting were believing. The you will give us. The discernment we need for how to steward our vote in the election. There were walking through his followers of Jesus in the United States. Certainly driven pray for wisdom and so many other ways right now over every person who's listening who's walking through different challenges and different circumstances where they need wisdom I don't know what to do please give it and as I pray that I know you will give it when we ask and we don't doubt. So God we ask for wisdom our lives we ask for wisdom specifically in our voting God. We pray for political leaders now and in the future to seek you for wisdom to go to you for wisdom, God, please deliver us from foolishness. From the opposite of wisdom from foolishness in our lives, God please deliver leaders around us from foolishness health and to seek you for wisdom your word and your spirit for wisdom God we pray for this. God We pray the hood raise up leaders know that left to themselves they are unwise. But when they seek you, they find wisdom God we pray for that. And pray for that in our lives. And in leaders around US leaders in our homes leaders in our churches and re pray for this and leaders in our country for your wisdom and reprise you for your generosity. Give it to us when we ask in Jesus name, we pray and we receive. Amen.
The Role of Government (Romans 13:14)
"Romans chapter thirteen verses one through four. Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For. There is no authority except from God. And those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed? And those who resist will encourage judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct but too bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good and you will receive his approval for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong be afraid. For he does not bear the, sword in vain. For He is the Servant of God and Avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Again there's so much. That we could talk about pray. About based on these four verses but as we are praying during these thirty one days leading up to presidential election in the United States. These verses are may be one of the clearest pictures in the Bible of God's design for government. How government is instituted by God. Exactly what Romans. Thirteen one says and it's instituted by God for a reason and that reason basically to summarize is to promote good for people. And to protect people against evil. So government is instituted by God and governing leaders given by God for the promotion of good among all people. Under the realm of that government. And for the protection of all people under the realm of that government from evil and government is even given authority by God to bear the sword to carry out judgment against evil all of this under the authority of God according to his word and way the reflects his character. So as we think about the presidential election, what are we praying for when it comes to our government and the leaders of our government? What are we praying for? Romans thirteen is telling us we're praying for leaders who won realize that the authority they have to govern does not come from themselves. It comes ultimately from God. And in this way, we pray for leaders in government who will be humble before God. And then. We pray for leaders who under God's authority will promote that which is good for all people. And wisdom to do that. They will have integrity to do that. They will have courage to do that to remote that which is good for all people and we say the government leaders would protect people against evil. They would that leaders would not be evil that leaders would not promote evil or turn a blind eye to evil but leaders in government would protect people against evil. So with these people significant basic principles of government according to Romans Chapter Thirteen, let's pray God we. Praise you for government? With thank you for instituting. A, system structure. To promote good and protect people against evil in a way that reflects your word in your character. And so we pray for our current president and political government leaders and for our future president. Presidents. Future political government leaders God. We pray for leaders to be humble before you. God we ask for that. Give them. Humility before you draw them. To, humility before you. Recognition. Of The authority, they have under you God do this in their hearts we pray. And God we pray that. You would give them grace by your grace by Your Mercy Oh God give them wisdom to know what is good and to lead people in ways that are good and to discern between good and evil and to lead people away from evil to bring right judgment on those who do evil. God We pray for leaders who love good and Hate Evil God we pray for a government. That reflects what you say. That values what you say is good. And of horrors what you say is evil. God. I, just think about my country, the United States right now amidst his presidential election, we have called so many things. Could that are evil and so many things. That are evil. We've called them. Good God. We're so confused. We Need Your Mercy Oh God help us help us in our lives and and our government. To. Humble ourselves before you. In to align with what your word says is good and what your words has his evil. And to carry out our government accordingly. God we we praise you as the one who has all authority and we submit ultimately to you, and as we submit to you, we pray for governing leaders that you've called us to submit to under you. And we pray even what comes later in this chapter that you would. Help us to honor. And respect. Governing authorities. Governing leaders. And to pray for them as we see in other parts of your word until work with them. As. Citizens for the good of others and ultimately the glory of your name. For the good of others and for the protection of people against evil. God, we praise you for your ultimately good governance over us and we pray for governance in our country. To reflect you by your grace and mercy we break for this in Jesus name. Amen.
Character of God: A Cup of Wrath?
"Okay, here we are we are talking about. Anger. We're talking about God's. and. We're talking about exodus thirty, four versus six and seven were said to be slow to anger, and here in this conversation is like the previous conversations, Tim Tim. Hi And KRISTA accuracy. So Let's jump right in. We've just kind of been taking ground Tim you've been walking us through some of the revelations you've had studying God's anger and God's judgments I don't know if Chris you're Tim WanNa do a bit of a summary Or. If you want me to or do you WanNa just jump right in share I can go for it. Okay. So the first thing we talked about was that this is kind of an uncomfortable topic for a lottery. Reasons that anger is a difficult thing for us to understand in humans and also in God. So we talked about that. We talked about how God's anger God's judgment are not intertwined in the biblical story. So God gets angry without judging. Actually he shows acts of mercy the first time that he gets angry and then he judges often or brings justice without being angry we talked about how bringing judgement or justice is often a handing over to natural consequence or to. Zion that actually I started avoiding the word natural. Because that's just loaded with some modern concepts I actually struggling to find a good replacement word, but it's the logical outcome. Hands people over to the cause effects sequence that they have chosen. Started themselves something like that yes. Oh, we looked at the first occurrence of God's anger with. Moses. After he resists being God's Prophet five times and that's followed by an act of mercy. He just says, okay. Well, I'll send Aaron with you to help you out. We looked at the incident of the golden calf where God gets angry at the people and talked about how his Anger a lot of times is related to to his people not trusting him or or breaking the relationship with him. So a lot of times, his anger or his judgment occur in that context. So that tells us something about divine anchor consum- some red. Okay. Anything else good summary. So I think where we WANNA come from here then is just look at main portraits of God's anger in the Torah in the Prophets of Old Testament and then. After. That in the story of Jesus how Jesus Came as a as a prophet of good news in Israel. But also that comes with a warning of God's judgement, and then after that exploring God's anger in especially in the letters the Apostle Paul he he's got a pretty nuanced way of talking about it. So the Torah, the Prophets Jesus and then Paul that's the roadmap simple. So. Okay. So let's we already talked about the three first occurrences of God's anger. They're all in the book of Exodus when Moses Stubborn and resist. You just Kinda summarize Krista the second one is after Pharaoh and his army perish in the Red Sea. There's a poem that Moses Miriam Sang about it and they talk about how what happened to Pharaoh was instance of God's anger to bring barrels evil back on himself and then the story of the Golden Calf and we talked about that a fair amount in the last conversation I wanted kind of zero in on it as we start actually here and I've been reflecting on that last conversation then I think I have a few. Better ways to to say it what divine an anger means in the story of the Golden Calf. So God gets angry of Moses Beckett Exodus three. But as you said, he doesn't act in any kind of severe way. Does it at the burning Bush inside the burning Bush when you get to the people all of a sudden God is angry and he wants to destroy his people to to bring an end to them is what he says to Moses give me rest I want to bring an end to them and that is severe. John Every time. Read it. It makes you little allergic and uncomfortable. So here's a way to think about it. The whole narrative of the biblical story is got a point humans to be as representatives in the world they rebel they WANNA, get blessing by their own wisdom, and so they you know take from the Tree God, exiles them, and what they do is corrupt and ruin the land through violence and bloodshed flood. God appoints a new humanity noah, his wife and his family, and they go and repeat everything that Adam and eve and their kids did from the chapters genesis. So God tries this new strategy of investing in one particular family out of all the nations that's Abraham and so. Pretty much from Abraham four word God it's as if the more corrupt humans become, the more tightly got binds himself to one particular Human Family through these covenant promises and these Covenant Promises Create More Complexity for God's purpose not less 'cause. Now God's committing himself investing himself allowing certain people to be as representatives, but there are no better in fact, they're often worse than other people. So by the time you get to the Mount Sinai. God has married himself to a whole nation of people and we talked about this principle that I tend to get more emotionally stirred up by people the. More emotionally connected to this kind of a natural thing. So I think that's actually a really important dynamic 'cause the rest of the Old Testament. After Abraham is all about God's relationship to one family, and what you'll see is that God gets most angry in the all estimate at the people who are most close to him and I think that's important because that's actually part of the Messianic trajectory of the Old Testament. Story. Is that these people are selected from among the nations to get God's blessing but that also makes them more liable to God's justice than your average whatever ancient Babylonian something because God didn't rescue the Babylonians out of Egypt. So they're not as obligated to be faithful to him but when the people that he did rescue are not faithful to him it makes him more angry. This helps us at least begin to think about God's intense anger in the Old Testament is mostly directed to the people of Israel and the golden calf story is a good good example of that.
Image Bearers of God (Genesis 1:26-28)
"Genesis Chapter One, versus Twenty Six through twenty eight. then. God said, let us make man in our image after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the scene over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth? So God created man in his own image in the image of God He created him. Male and female he created them. And God bless them. And God said to them be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. And Have Dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. these verses are. Breathtaking awe inducing. humbling. Sobering encouraging just think God is created a you. And me in his image. What does that mean you and are created in a sense like God? Obviously, we are not God we are not little gods, but we are created. In such a way that we have the capacity to relate to God. To, be in relationship with God in a way that trees and. Oceans and mountains and animals cannot you and I are created uniquely in God's image with the capacity to know him. Enjoy him relate to him, walk with him, worship him and end this, and it's not just you and me it's every single person created with equal dignity. With. Equal beauty in this way in the image of God. Oh, there's so much that flows from this but as we think about presidential election and all of the discussions and debates about and from political candidates and parties. There is a tendency. To miss this reality and to speak about others to think about others to relate to others in ways that betray this glorious reality from the very beginning, and we are compelled by these verses to treat all people think about all people speak to all people about all people with dignity. Image bearers of God. So pray for that. Even as we think about all the personalities in this election, as we think about leaders of different parties. As, we think about other people around us who we know who may have different opinions or convictions than us. Even non-believing friends family members co workers whose ideas are totally contrary to God's word who aren't even thinking through. Your word who are. Actively. Rebelling against you God. We pray that is we think about every Hurson, every hearse analogy around us who we know we don't know who we see on the news we see reporting the news help us to see everyone. As. wonderfully created in your image and to honor just like I peter chapter two verse, Seventeen says to honor everyone. and. Got We pray for that across our country Alba's to honor people with equal dignity. And all that. That means God please help us. In this way we pray for political candidates to honor all people with dignity as image bearers of God for Party leaders. In God we pray for this and the church even just so. God over how even in the church during these days, there can be such divisions speaking. Talking to about people in ways that don't celebrate the beauty of what it means for each other remade in your image. God help us to honor everyone around us and the process to point them to you as their Creator to point people to you as their designer to point people to you is the one who has made them to enjoy you and walk with you and worship you gotta repay. You'd help us to love an honor people well as we point them to you as the one who has made them wonderfully got a repay for this in our hearts and we pray for this in the hearts of people around us Oh God. We pray for this in each one of our hearts help us to live and perceive everybody we see in view of Genesis, chapter one versus Twenty Six through twenty eight. In. Jesus name we, pray. Amen
Kingship Belongs to the Lord (Psalm 22:27-28)
"So we're GONNA. Start. Today with Psalm Twenty Two verses twenty seven and twenty eight. This is the word of God. All the ends of the Earth shall remember and turn to the Lord. And all the families of the nation's shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations. I remember vividly reading this chapter, these verses. On. The. Side of a mountain in the Himalayas. In the middle of unreached people's. Attention. Groups in a nation where there is so little access to the Gospel. And getting to verse twenty seven and just. Falling on my face on that mountainside as we see this promise, all the ends of the Earth shall remember and turn it a Lord and all the families of the nation. So worship for you to pray for all nations. To know Jesus as. And then to read Verse Twenty Eight for Kingship. So here's the declaration kingship belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations. So as we think about a presidential election electing someone to lead a country, it is so good to know that. The ultimate? King. The sovereign ruler is not up for election. He rains today, he will reign a month from now he will reign a year from now and ten trillion years from now he'll still be raining and he is good. He is the Lord. He is perfect. His holy he is just he is righteous. He is loving. He is a merciful. So. Let this song lead us to praise God as the king over. Any nation wherein and specifically for those of us who are living United States kingship belongs to the Lord God praise you as King Overall Genesis, we praise you as Lord Overall, all authority in Heaven and on Earth belongs to you. And one day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that you are lord to the glory of God, the Father we exalt you are king, Our Lord, our ruler, the one who reigns over our lives, and this is where our hope is. Oh God. We put all our hope in you all our trust in you know who's going to get elected. We don't put our hope trust and who's going to get elected as the leader of our country. We trust in you as the leader of all things not just our country, the leader of our lives. Later of our families, the leader of the Church leader of the nation's we praise you and re you that you are the leader we need. New perfectly just. You're perfectly righteous. You Are Holy Holy Holy. You know world country of very imperfect. Candidates and imperfect leaders. There is no one compares with you Oh God. There is no one who compares with you Jesus in we are so thankful we find such refuge in your rain and your rule over all things we praise you that kingship belongs to you and you rule over the nation's you rule our nation gallery pray. I pray that you would bring many people. To, know you as king even during these days, you'd help us to proclaim you as king to have far more conversations during these days about you as the king we need. Then even the conversations we're having about who might vote for. God We. Pray the help us to point to you as king. We pray for that in the United. States we pray for that among all nations go re pray for the Aroma Gary People in Kenya. This molly people group about a million people. In Kenya got so few of them just a handful of them who may be followers Jesus God we pray that they would come to know Jesus is king. You would cause the gospel to spread to them. Oh God we praise you. GotTa help is to Make Your glory as king known in our nation in all nations as we pray like you taught us to pray Jesus our Father in heaven. Hallowed, be your name. Your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven we praise you king. Over our nation and Omniscience in Jesus name we pray.
They Shall Know that I am the Lord (Ezekiel 29:6)
"Zeke you'll chapter twenty, nine, verse six. Then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord. Read that again. Just just think about this statement. God. Says in this prophecy against Egypt, he's telling them what he's. GonNa. Do among them and he says then all the inhabitants of Egypt. Shall know that I am the Lord. That's a common phrase that last part we see all throughout Ezekiel, he sang it mostly God saying it through Ezekiel mostly to his people. You shall know that I am the Lord. You shall all know that I am the Lord. But now in this section of Ezekiel we see God prophesying through Ezekiel speaking to all kinds of different nations around his people. And here in this prophecy against Egypt verse six says then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord. And that verse. So significant. When we think about. The world around US look at the world around us. Perceive what is happening in the world around us. God is working in everything that is happening. Toward this end. That all the inhabitants. Of every nation. Shall know that he is the Lord. To borrow from Philippians Chapter Two verse nine to eleven one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord all the inhabitants. Of Egypt, all the inhabitants of the earth will not only know. That Jesus is Lord, but they will bow the knee and confess Jesus is Lord sovereign ruler of all just think about that. Think about the. Seven plus billion people in the world right now think about everyone's face. You will see today or have seen today. You will see tomorrow every one of them. Will one day not just know. That Jesus Lord they will bow to Jesus as Lord. Like how does that change the way we live? I certainly, it gives us confidence. Doesn't it that? In the end. Jesus will be exalted as Lord like amidst all the turmoil and tension we see around us in world. It's good to know that Jesus Lord over at all then one day he who is perfectly just imperfectly righteous will usher in a new habit a newer of perfect justice in perfect righteousness where he is exalted as Lord that's a hope for today. And then doesn't that. Just drive urgency in evangelism urgency to share the gospel like look at the people you see today, we'll see tomorrow like look in their eyes one day they will know and bow the need Jesus is Lord. So the question is not. Will they know she just as Lord will they bowed and Lord? The question is, will they do that now? Will they know that now bow the knee now or will they know and bow the knee when it's too late? In you know this you know this is coming so Proclaimed Jesus as Lord today like. Let Your Lips. Let your life can be the means by which they know now before it's too late the Jesus is Lord like who can you? Who Can I share the Gospel with today? Right around us, and then as we pray for people around the world who don't know the name of Jesus, don't know the gospel of you just think about the. People in Tanzania six, hundred and forty three thousand. Muslims no followers of Jesus among the charity no one who's bowing the need to Jesus his Lordship all of them will one day. Bow The knee before. Jesus. Is Lord the question is what they do it. Now where they don't, it's too late and we know that he's lured. So we go. This is why we go. This is why the Great Commission Verse Nineteen Matthew Chapter Twenty Eight therefore go and make disciples of all nations why what's the therefore referring to verse Eighteen All Authority in Heaven on earth has been given to me we go we share the Gospel, why because Jesus is Lord we go right around us to the end of the Because Jesus is Lord of also. God We pray that you would. Captivate our hearts our lives with the reality of your lordship today certainly in our own lives as we submit to your Lordship even as we've already prayed that in Ezekiel. But God is we think about. Your lordship over everyone. Over everyone. We pray. For. Children. Parents. Relatives Friends. Neighbors Coworkers who don't know you as Lord Right now God, we pray that you would bring them to know you as Lord, we pray that you would give us boldness in sharing the Gospel with him. Go that you would open their eyes. You would do a supernatural work, open their eyes to see you as Lord to submit. He was Lord, God, we pray for the spread of Your Gospel and our families among our friends among our neighbours among our co workers got. We pray that you would bring more and more and more people in Metro, Washington DC and know you as the Lord. The trust you is Laurie. Pray for that and all the cities, the places where we are gathered right now. Our country's. Got Among unreached peoples, God we pray together for the Chirazi in Tanzania God please bring the Chirazi to know Jesus. Is Lord Sin Somebody since some of us to go to the Chirazi in Tanzania, they might know that you're the Lord. They might bow the need to you as lord before it's too late they might know you as savior and Lord. God We, pray for the spread of the Gospel among the Chirazi. And among people right around US knowing. Then, all the inhabitants of the Earth shall know that you are the Lord. In Jesus Name We pray
The First Days: Genesis
"Audience. For Genesis, is crucial and particularly when we get to these first days, we've covered this a little bit already, but it'd be good to just circle back so that we make sure that the audience knows This is who the original audience is for the book of Genesis and so when we're talking about the book of Genesis, we're talking about kind of. Volume one of a five book series called the Pinta toot the first five books of the Old Testament Genesis Exodus Leviticus numbers, deuteronomy these books are entrusted. These words are revealed to Moses who is now the representative rescuer and leader for the people of Israel, and they are getting this revelation on the outside of Egypt. They have been rescued from Egypt they have been brought to Mount Sinai and goddess forming then to take them in to Canaan to the promise land that is the original audience. This is post exodus Israel hearing from y'all way creator of the world. So they're hearing a creation story. That predates them significantly, it goes all the way back not just before their time in Egypt but before father Abraham all the way back back back back to the beginning and why is this crucial for us to understand when we start looking at genesis one through eleven that this is who the original audience is. Yes. So one of the reasons Moses writing is because he wants to prepare that they're in that in between space between they've left and where they're headed and so he writes these first five to give them roots and shoots. He wants to root them in. This is where you came from and he wants to give them shoots. He wants to give them something that will hold them steady. In the place that they're going so it's it's the history and the law is the combination that you're gonNA. See there and we talked about in a previous episode about the sort of the classic worldview questions that that these eleven chapters in particular are asking and answering, and as you pointed out Kyle I think that they're not just asking and answering those questions in a vacuum. So those questions of. Where did I come from? Why am I here what's the problem? What's the solution those questions are being asked and answered within the context of where they came from and where they're headed so that they will understand why Israel is a nation set apart yeah. Yeah. That's really good and so. We the roots and shoots thing is that's very valuable. So the story is not just. Oh, you did. Okay. Great I am I. The only one here is not just add living. GOLLY shoot. Now. Yeah. I think that that's really good in it reminds me of something for end of the show friend friend of ours WHO's taught for us in different environments that roots and shoots. Things reminds me of what Jerry. Jones says jt you're gonNA love this quote. You remember it. If he says, your creation story determines the trajectory of your culture. The. Roots and shoots thing where like. Israel is receiving a creation story and jt through this word out in an earlier episode but it's important I think it's important. To capture this creation story, we could call that a cosmology. COSMOLOGY and they're receiving it in in a world of competing. Creation Stories competing cosmology. Jt isn't that right? Like Israel is not just they're not like Ginseng. Story in a vacuum. They're receiving the story in a world where there are other accounts of how this has happened at yeah. Just back up what is what is cosmos? Like? Why do we have the word cosmology? What does it mean? Are you asking me? Yeah, I'm asking you is used it so you should make him to find it. I don't know if he can but I'm pretty sure you know I'm just getting. Yeah. I mean it's just talking about the. Creation of the cosmos of the world like it's it's just a fancy way of talking about the creation account and how to make sense of who is the Creator? What is the creation? What is the purpose of the crater creation relationship? You'd say, yeah, absolutely I mean, in some ways, cosmology would be like theology cosmos is the world the Earth, right? So it's like study of the World Study of the Earth Account of the world words about the world whereas theology is words about God's when we're talking about cosmology or cosmology as we're talking about words about the world, the account of creation or how things came to. Be.
The Root of All Sin (Ezekiel 28:12)
"Chapter Twenty eight verses one to. The word of the Lord came to me son of man say to the Prince of Tyre thus says the Lord God? Because your heart is proud. And you have said, I am a God I sit in the seat of the Gods in the heart of the seas. Yet you are but a man and no god. Though you make your heart like the heart of God. And such begins in this chapter, the prophecy specifically against the Prince of Tyre, the leader of Tyre who is basically set himself up like he is a God. He is looked at himself that way he is exalted himself that way he has. Projected that toward others, they should look to him that way his heart has been proud. Like he is a God. And as we hear this. Judgment against the Prince of Tyre for his pride. I can't help but think number one about the pride in my own heart. The pride in each of our hearts. Like this is the essence of sin. That we set ourselves up. As. If we are God. As if we know what is best for our lives, like every sin is born in a- heart of pride that says I'm GonNa do things my way. Instead of God's way I'm not going to submit to God. I'm going to be like God like I know good and evil as justice chapter three and it's every single time we send. Like. CS Lewis. Chapter on pride in Mere Christianity's so helpful because he talks about just the root of sin being pride before God and it's on display here and the Prince of Tyre Ezekiel, Chapter Twenty Eight, and sadly it. So often on display in each of our hearts and so Ezekiel Chapter Twenty eight just drives us to pray in confession and repentance with humility before God God we. Even. Saying that in prayer saying God, we are confessing you are God we are not we are not God we are not a God. We don't know what is best. For our lives, we don't know what is best in the world yet we are all prone to think we know better than you were prone to make choices that go against your word in your ways, and so we pray Oh God for your forgiveness. For Your forgiveness for any and every way heart has and even now today is prone to say I am God. I. Am the one who's going to call the shots here God we pray you'd help us to live under your lordship an Jesus. We praise you for your humility being the very nature of God not considering equality with God something to be grassed you made yourself nothing taking the very nature of a servant. Human lightness and you humble yourself and became obedient to death even death on a cross for our sins for our pride you died you paid the price for our prideful arrogance and sin against God we praise you Jesus for a year humility for your sacrifice for us for your forgiveness of sweet. Praise you. Jesus. For clothing us in your righteousness when we don't deserve it and so we pray we pray right now in fresh way for your humility in our lives for your humility in our hearts help us all day today all day tomorrow God. Help us to humble ourselves before you into follow you trust you to yield. To you to submit to you to all that you call us to do God remove pride from me remove pride from US cleanses of all pride reporte for humility we for in our hearts and minds just ever increasing. Glad submission to you as our God for we know this is where life is found where joy has found his where piece is found in you God not in us is gone but in you as God and submitting to you got worshiping yours gone glorify newest got testifying to you alone as God. We praise you. There is no one like you. There are no gods beside you even as we're praying. Just daily for unreached people groups in India where so many millions of gods or being worship God replayed today for the. Be Kadoi people of India. One point one, million of them, worshiping millions and millions of God's May. They know Kuehne be caught why people know that you alone or God may send more and more believers to make your glorious God known among them. We pray for your salvation salvation can only come from you God among the coon be Kadoi. God even as we pray for the spread of your Lordship, your supremacy is God. There may your lordship and your supremacy as gotTa rain in our hearts today. Right now in an all that we do, we pray in Jesus name.
Alexander of Hales
"On this episode of five minutes in Church history, we are talking about Alexander of Hales a medieval theologian. The first question is, where is hails will hails is in the West Midlands of England. The word itself means a Nook or a remote valley in this was a place that was a remote valley at the time of Alexander. The population of this sleepy little Berg was south of five hundred people. So now that we know where hails is who is Alexander. Well, he was born in eleven eighty five actually we're not quite exactly sure when he was born dates range from eleven eighty to eleven eighty six but we seem to settle on the date eleven eighty five. There is very little else known about his childhood we assume that his family was wealthy because he was sent off to the University of Paris to study in that was not something that everyone did. So we assume that his family had some means an off he went to Paris. His time at Paris. He held a number of church positions and titles but largely, he was a teacher at the University of Paris. He did become Franciscan monk in twelve thirty six and he would die in Paris in twelve, forty five. So. What did he do? Well, he was significant and bringing aristotle into the discussion of theology. Now, when we talk about this, we talk about all of the as that are involved and that is the first letter of the names of all of these people seems to begin with an a or there's no himself. Of course. Then there's arrows he was the Muslim scholar who translated aristotle from the Greek into Latin for all these medieval lists to be able to read study. There's Alberta's Magnus Albert the great another Great Faculty member at the University of Paris and he was the teacher of the final a a coyness. Thomas. Aquinas. Well, into that bunch of as we must throw Alexander he actually preceded Albertus magnus and he was the first to. The lectures and the theological lectures in particular around to aristotle and to use aristotle and his method, and even some of Aristotle's Tom's. As an aide and as a help to teach algae was Alexander of Hales that we see as the founder of the father of scholasticism and one of his published works was his own Suma Taylor. Of course, we talk about Thomas Acquaintances Suma but Alexander had one to his sumo was not finished at the time of his death and many others added to it in fact about seven years after he died. His book was still being added to one person said of Alexander's Suma that it was as heavy as a horse. Now, I'm sure there are some hyperbole there, but it was a massive tome. So we have his big book in his use of Aristotle but the other thing that makes him interesting is that he participated in these public university wide debates and he participated in famous one that spanned over three days. Now. Presumably, let's hope that they would take breaks from time to time. But this was a debate that spanned three days and anyone students. Faculty citizens of Paris could ask any question of the master and the master would have to feel it. And Alexander of Hales withstood three long days of this debate. That's how you earned the Latin title Doctor, Irre- FRAG analysis which we translate as the air refutable teacher. So he was unable to be refuted during those three days of debates. He also earned the title Doctor Doc two-room, which translated means the teacher of teachers. So this is Alexander of Hales that small village and mid western England and he made it all the way to the University of Paris as the Medieval, theologian? Alexander of Hales.
Don't Put Your Trust in the World (Ezekiel 27:27)
"Chapter Twenty Seven Verse Twenty Seven. Your riches, your wears your merchandise, your mariners in your pilots, your talkers, your dealers in merchandise, and all your men of war who were in you with all your crew that is in your midst. Sink into the heart of the seas on the day of your fall. So Ezekiel, Chapter Twenty seven continues this prophecy. From. Zico Sir. God speaking through a zeal. A prophecy against tire this city, it was known for its wealth and known for its international trade. Through the water on the sea and so when you hear this verse, your riches, your wears your merchandise, your mariners, your pilots, basically all that made. Tire wealthy all that made the economy of tires strong your coworkers, your dealers in merchandise and all your men of war who were in you those who protect the city. So thank the economy of tire and think the military of tire. So it was strong. Both of them were strong a strong economy and a strong military. and. What God is saying in this prophecy is all of it. Sinks into the heart of the sea on the day of your fall. So. What are we take away from that? How does this lead us to pray? Well certainly among other things without question. This verse reminds us that we must never put our trust in an economy in this world. And we must never put our trust in a military in world. Now that's not to say that economy is unimportant or a military is unimportant. Fact, we could look at other places in scripture. See many places where an economy we want to develop in a way that glorifies got as good for all people made in his image in way that is good for the poor in a way that is just and right and promotes prosperity and good for all people made in God's image. So yes, economies important and military is also important especially when you look at Romans chapter thirteen and the responsibility God's entrusted to governments as. To, wield the sword to protect people against Yvonne to promote. Good. So it's not an economy or a military is bad. But it is wrong to put your trust in either. One of these things because they are fleeting economies rise and fall military's grow strong and weak and when we put our trust in the things of this world, even things like an economy or in a military than we are putting our trust in places that will not hold that will in the words of Ezekiel Chapter. Twenty seven verse Twenty Seven Sink Into the heart of the sea on the day of our fall in other words God in his sovereignty can bring an economy or a military to nothing in an instant. So this is why the Sauna says some trust in chariots and some in horse his but we trust in the name of the Lord. Our God. So we say that together in prayer God right now. Especially amidst a pandemic that has. Wreaked havoc on economies all around the world we see. In a fresh way that we cannot put our trust ultimately in an economy in a job in money in. Savings accounts. Or we we thank you for your blessing for your grace and so many different ways in jobs and money that you provide in it and savings accounts even that can be used in different ways for your glory. We pray that you would help us keep us guard us from putting our trust in our money in wealth in economies. And God Garda's from putting our trust ultimately in military's even as I think about pastoring many people who are in the military in our church family. Praise you for your grace in them for your common grace in all kinds of people who served to promote good and protect people against evil. God, we pray for your blessing on them in a Romans chapter thirteen kind of way for the carrying out of your purposes for government at the same time. God We say before you now even as some Brothers and sisters who are praying this right now are in the military. We put our trust in our military might or power. Nations Come and Fall (Ezekiel 26:1718)
"Zeki chapter twenty, six, versus seventeen, and eighteen. And they will raise a lamentation over you and say to you how you have perished. You were inhabited from the sees Oh city renowned who is mighty on the see she and her inhabitants imposed their terror on all her inhabitants. Now, the coastlands Trimble on the day of your fall and the coastlands that are on the sea are dismayed at your passing. So this is. The end of two chapters in Ezekiel Chapter Twenty Five, twenty six to begin a series of chapters in the book of Ezekiel where God tells Ezekiel to Prophesy Against Not his people in Judah, the people of God of Israel instead to the neighbors, the nations, surrounding Judah, surrounding his people. So chapter twenty, five starts with the prophecy against Ammon and MOAB and seer and eat him and Felicita and then chapter twenty six begins a prophecy against tire and that's what this whole chapters about. The reason, I read these two verses WanNa pray according to them versus seventeen and eighteen is because God is. Speaking to a nation and a people that had prospered. and. He's talking about how they were mighty on the sea and imposing terror on others they were renowned. But now in an instant God says all of that would be taken away. And he would bring them low and the coast lands would be dismayed at how this once renowned powerful people just like that were gone. Just like that, when the total opposite direction and reading these chapters, these prophecies from God through Ezekiel among the nations is a sobering reminder. That no matter. How Great. Powerful Influential a nation might be. My claim to be might be perceived to be. Nations come and fall and can fall just like that at the sovereign decree of God. And particularly as well. We think about any nation I, know people listen to this podcast and different countries around the world many maybe most from the United States? I just. Want us to be reminded from God's word. No matter what nation we live in and no matter how powerful that nation. May being or claim to be or be perceived to be. Is ultimately in the hands of. An instant everything could change. So. God We. Humble ourselves before you. As Your people in United States. And many other different nations. And we. Humbly confess acknowledged that you are lord and sovereign over. All nations that you hold the United States every other nation in the palm of your hand you raise and you make Lo, and you can do either one in an instant and so God. We pray that you would turn our hearts to you. God We pray just compelled to pray based on. Zeki Chapter? Twenty six for spiritual getting in my own nation in the united. States got we need you save us from ourselves. We have in so many ways turn from you so much that we have approved is displeasing to you dishonoring to you.
