Full Self-Driving Limited Beta Released
"Everybody Robin our here today even though we are less than a day out from Tesla's q earnings report, we already have news up staging mills results Tesla has started to a very limited way roll out the full self-driving rewrite Beta, and we are already starting to see some videos from that Beta pop up online. So today's episode is going to be focused on that because this is game changing technology that we're seeing happen right now. So I've put together a compilation of those videos. These have been shared on twitter by Tesla owner, Silicon Valley and Brandini nine, one six and raising them with their permission. So let's check out these clips and then analyze a bit as we go through. Our had. So the first thing that we notice as the car autonomously approaches this intersection here is just the new user interface. So this is not the final version. It'll be cleaned up a lot when this actually is sort of wide release ready I'm sure. But the first thing that sticks out just the amount of detail that's being captured here just from Tesla's vision system. It's using the cameras to put this entire scene together without hd maps. So here we go through the intersection and Thomas left hand turn. And, it's able to complete it. So this is one of the main missing features right now, and it is here in the Beta on surprisingly. But great to see that it's accessible handles turn. Though, in this case, it did have a lead vehicle I'm sure we'll see some other ones here in a second without that lead vehicle. So again, zooming in on the you, I hear you can just see the massive amount of detail that's being generated again from the vision system in the Tesla it seeing across the road at a t intersection here. Mapping the basically the outlines segments of the entire road using the dividing lines here, and then the lanes that are available for the tussle to switch ends you. which you can see in this case, it's navigating over into the left lane. Giving that update that now occurs now stopping for traffic light and fifty feet, and again we're GONNA see another left hand turn here. Once that turns green, which does he can see a turn green there on the UI. Maybe a little bit of hesitation there tough to tell but in this case, no lead vehicle. And it does manage to make. That left turn. And again, you can see the interpretation of the road here. And this is all happening at night right now. Obviously, the Beta just came out. So all the videos are from night driving so far, and you can still see even with. without the benefit of daylight tussle is still able to. Get a really good representation seemingly although we can't really tell outside the vehicle obviously but of the of the entire seems to be up Senate here. Rats I'M GONNA pause on this one as we head into it. As you can see, this is around out I. Wasn't sure if this would make it into the limited Beta release here but it seems to you and this you know it's tough to think of other features that wouldn't be here if we've got the roundabout in this in this version so you can see again with just the vision system here not using HD maps or anything like that Tesla's recognizing that this is around about intersection it's mapping out the roundabout here in the same color that you would normally see the lane lands that you are not supposed obviously cross. So really cool to see that. Let's watch it travel through here. Again, this one's from Brandini nine, one six. So yielding there it seems. Navigates through there. So, pretty cool. Brandini did say that for that one he did take over manual control at the end but I believe he said that was because his passenger was a little bit a word about itsel he said it would have handled it fine. So exciting see the roundabout here is another video again, a little bit more high resolution. This time we can see again the scene, the lead car here being mapped with green box versus some of those purple or red boxes that we've seen on other vehicles. Indicating that, it's you know traveling in the same direction. Looks like he changed his following distance, they're a bit. CNC. Vehicles off to the side appearing in yellow or red. Even as far out as as over there. In oncoming you know cross lanes. You can see those vehicles appearing and then the lead vehicle turns out. Tessa continues on its path. Read through an intersection with the green light. And, this one's really interesting Brandini on twitter said that this, there's a pedestrian approaches in this case he's GonNa take a left turn here he said the vehicle signals back on what he's doing what he's got mapped in terms of his navigate on autopilot directions. So let's go ahead and watch this. And it looks like this may be sort of an unmarked road here that tussles just sort of interpreting where the lane lane line should be. So you can see it approach the stop sign here. Mapping out a lot of details waiting for this card across. Its even picking up the biker land sign here in the other lane. There's the pedestrians. There are the pedestrians and it makes that left hand turn again with no lead vehicle. So super cool to see that this is more robust than even I expected this absolutely seems to be a step change from the report so far people have been very, very happy with it. I think this makes a Robo taxi vision from Tesla much more real because this is what you want I do as feature complete that means the Tesla vehicle is going to be autonomously capable of navigating the entire trip. In some cases, it's not gonna be everything but people are going. To go on rides and Tesla vehicles where they don't have to intervene one single time and that is going to make this so much more real feeling than has up until this point and of course, those drivers should still be diligently monitoring because there are certainly going to be corner cases that takes some time and more data to get ironed out
How GM Built A Car For The Moon
"Before mankind got so much as a sputnik into space, we were already dreaming of what cars would look like on the moon and other planets and the one thousand nine, hundred, fifty s Collier's magazine profiled german-born American rocket scientists, Verner von Braun full name and Verner Magnus. Maximilian Freiherr von Braun. and his Astro Utopian Masterplans for America to explore and colonize the galaxy. The articles were here in one thousand, nine, hundred, fifty style hype with scenes featuring the swaggering title man will conquer space soon. So soon, one of the articles imagined moon exploration that made use of free surface vehicles quote tank like cars equipped with Caterpillar Treads for mobility over the Moon's rough surface power is provided by an enclosed turbine driven by a combustion of hydrogen peroxide and fuel. Oil The vehicle was twenty five miles an hour on flat ground. Since gravity on the moon was only one eighth of that on Earth von Braun poetically pictured the space cars would be followed by a quote spray of dust, which settles almost immediately like a bow wave on a motorboat. That's pretty that's cool image that's visual to imagine the tractors. Each weighing ten tons would drag three trailers, a piece of gear and personnel in preparation for a six-week expiration involving fifty crew members. Crazy I love this sort of like blue sky kind of speculation. Yeah that's why Popular Science was one of my favorite magazines as a kid 'cause they always had like crazy tack on the cover and like all this speculation as to what it would be able to do and I don't think much of that has come to fruition. Maybe maybe less impressive but equally important ways. I. There is a shift in what we focused on and now much of the focus of technologies just collecting our data. So we can. That's a fair point. He sold things. It's like we're not focused on like space cars or. Travel are like we don't have like a passenger jet that breaks the speed of sound anymore but. They know what adds to give me and they know how how often I leave my house? Yeah. I keep getting served ads for crocs. I've been looking at them. I would I. I love him. I love mine. I had served that I really agree with because I was a hold out for a long time and I was like crops are dumb and then once I finally gave in to crocs, it was one of the best days. So yeah, there's a the the six week exploration involving crew members. That's a lot of dudes. Like like. I've mentioned going to space before and like like it's always three people you know. Let's what it feels like. It'll be sick to be up in space with fifty people. That'd be more. More, fun. I think there's a lot of that like there's like a a segment of sci-fi where it's like there's only four people in the space craft in one of them is a killer. Yeah. But like I feel that scenario would be a lot harder to posit when there's fifty people. That isn't that the premise of Jason X. where he goes to space I it sounds like something that would do. Yeah. They'd. Like they're like. I think it's the guy with. Hockey masks. Eight foot tall. Can't be too sure. Don't want to jump to any conclusion. Anyway an article in the series entitled Can we get to Mars imagine a similar scenario with tank like space tractors that would drive the living quarters on the surface of Mars this time traveling from a pole of the planet, all the way to the equator. So today we're just going to go through. You know everything that has changed in the last few months with Tesla. Alex. is on a lot of research autonomy on energy and then we're also gonNA talk a little bit about Battery Day We are GONNA be doing Q. and A.. So on Alex's side, they have their investors pepper sandler investors are going to be asking some questions and on my end If you WANNA, ask questions on Youtube feel free to do that. I have been a retail investor in Tesla since two thousand, thirteen I started doing the Tesla daily sort of. podcast back in August twenty seventeen the reason I did that was just because I saw a lot of misinformation out there in the media and I thought a lot of investors were having trouble getting good accurate information in a timely manner I felt like I can help with that just because I was doing so much research on the company every single day. So just on a whim, sorta started Tesla daily as podcast, and since then it's grown, I took a fulltime last year on Youtube and over the last year of we've gained about one, hundred, thousand subscribers. So a lot of people definitely interested in Tusla and interested in it from an investment perspective. and I'm lucky to be joined by people like Alex Lincoln, help us understand that. And also has more or less has a monopoly on the question asking. Comes to the quarterly earnings calls as well. I might add so if Obviously the test approach during these earnings calls is is atypical, but for institutional investors and another sell CIDERS You know when we started seeing this say dot com stuff it was sort of Sort of jarring a little bit odd. But for those who are unaware. that works by vote process. So people like rob and others they submit questions on behalf of retail investors and then they get up voted and rob because of the quality of his questions and get basically. Five out of five or something. Questions while you're limited so only. I've cut myself down to two because it's you know everyone should have an opportunity and not everybody else audience. So. That's generous. All right. Okay. So how do you want to do this route I? This is this is going to be the third time that Robin I've had discussion. That's been sort of a an interview. Interviewer interviewee sort of a a a setup but I think this time and we can do it that way as well. I know that we've got some topics we want to get through but then after after that, we can open up to Q. and A., and if nobody has been accused or as than Robin Top, we'll ask her own questions. Yes I think I want to start off with just your last couple of notes since we last talked again as did the the big updates deep dives on both the energy business and the economy business, and that's something that particularly retail investors have been frustrated with. I don't know if it's you know institutions or Wall Street or analyst in general, just not really modeling for those things and so I just like to you know go through what your models are sort of showing and the thought process that you approach them with I don't know that's a broad question. So I guess we're GONNA Kinda start wherever without. So I think it's. It's not just retail investors that are frustrated with it. I mean I think that investors in general are frustrated with IT A. Topics in particular software autonomy, self-driving row taxis. But then also the. Stationary storage business energies are or the. Batteries. Gigantic Mega Pack, Grid scale type batteries a lot of people they approach these topics without really knowing what to do with it like how'd you build a model? in the first place, it's not like the auto business where we're getting tons of data from lots of different regions market share pricing you know people are tracking these things on a daily basis and you can. You can track Tesla's progress. You have a much harder time doing something similar in the stationary storage business like if I was to ask you. How many megawatt hours of stationary storage were installed last month and what Tesla's market share within that in Europe was. People would be like I have no I don't I don't have any of the Ammo to answer that question, but they answer those questions daily for the auto business. Right so partially, it's a question of you know data availability partially, it's also a question of PNL contribution like these topics aren't a big enough needle mover today in terms of what Tesla's going to do in any given quarter. So people just don't devote as much bandwith to it. but that being the case. Especially, the bigger the market cap gets hired valuation goes the more you have to consider. Pieces of the business like this that you know at least if you're GonNa believe, you must take him at his word that these parts of the business. Core right and potentially at one point going to be as large or larger than the automotive business. If that's even the right zip code, then you can't just continue ignoring them. So you know we firstly published a big sort of deep dive on. On autonomy and The soffer opportunity. Then we did a note that wouldn't know that I would call it a deep dive on the energy business because we're still sort of getting our feet wet there But. Yeah. I. I don't know if you had an opportunity to read them that. They get a little bit detailed But. It was educational, one way or another, and at least now we have a framework for thinking through You know how big these businesses could potentially be, and
Model S Price Cut, X Range Increase(?)
"Everybody Rob our here, and today we were talking about a price cut on Tesla's model s an update on the full self-driving rewrite an SNP credit rating upgrade some news out of China India that a couple of other topics as well. We'll start off with the price cut tesla today the US lowered the base price for both the long range and the performance version of the Model S. by three thousand dollars meaning the starting prices dropped from about seventy five, thousand dollars before to about seventy two thousand dollars now and Tesla has similar. We cut the price in China for the mile s by about three percent I don't believe. It has been updated in Europe but all the pricing those markets are different. So let me know otherwise if it has changed in your market this is the second Prescott on the Model S. This year following a five thousand dollar price cut on the vehicle back in May, which also applied to the Model X. at that time. Interestingly, this update is only for the model s not the Model X. That means the base price spread on both the long range and performance versions of these vehicles is now eight thousand dollars I don't think this is terribly surprising given. The fact that we are now in Q. Four and Tesla does still. Have a shot at hitting five, hundred, thousand vehicle deliveries this year but it's GonNa take every single vehicle to do that I, think and on the s next combined unfortunately, tussle doesn't break those out individually anymore. But on those two vehicles combined they have been producing and delivering under the capacity Tesla in their queue update letter said that they had a current installed annual capacity out of Fremont for s and x combined and ninety thousand per year. That's twenty, two, thousand, five, hundred per quarter but tesla hasn't delivered more than twenty thousand as next combined since the end of twenty eighteen excluding the first two quarters this year due to. Production Shutdowns Tesla's at that point in time has averaged production of around sixteen thousand s annex per quarter. So they certainly seemed to have some additional capacity and that should be the case for batteries as well because these used the eighteen sixties from Panasonic, in Japan, which have previously accommodated s an extra rates around twenty, five, thousand per quarter in Q. Three, tesla produced around seventeen thousand ax in our previous conversations about potential Q. Four production. I just held that study at seventeen thousand I. Now think that will actually increase this quarter q four is naturally a stronger quarter for automotive demand tussle now, early in the quarter stacks this price. Got On top of it, and we also had the Plan Model S. announced at battery. Day? Which I think could have removed some doubts for some buyers that may have been waiting for battery day in anticipation of potentially other updates to tussles lineup. So I think you for should be pretty solid for model s and not to be outdone entirely by the model as we may actually have a range update for the Model X. DMZ member cold weather e. v. last night posted an update that they had just taken delivery of a twenty twenty one then model x. and they were surprised to see that on the monroney sticker which. Is that sticker in the vehicle comes with all new vehicles and has things like efficiencies migrating, and one of those things is EPA rating this person will surprised to see that the EPA rating for Model X. was three, hundred, seventy, one miles that is higher than the previous rating of three hundred, fifty, one miles of range, which is what tussle still lists on their design studio. So we'll have to wait and see if we hear this from more people obviously this just as one source at this point in time, and this user also does say quote I haven't charged to one hundred percent but when extrapolate my current state of charge? percent two miles, it should give three hundred and fifty one miles at one, hundred percent and quote. So maybe it is still three hundred, fifty, one miles or maybe the software just hasn't been updated for this new version yet I think the latter is more likely but again, we'll wait and see this would be five point seven percent increase to range, which I think brings to mind a couple of things. We earlier this year had a similar increase in range to the Model S., which took it from around three hundred eighty at remember the exact rating up to four hundred miles per charge. But when that happened the Model X.. Actually, stayed constant. So this could be the X. catching up with those s updates previously, or we do also know that Panasonic has been working to improve energy density in Nevada by about five percent five plus percent. So maybe they made more changes to the eighteen six fifty's that supply the model x. from Japan, and then maybe those new cells would be adding this five percent plus range. If that were the case we would expect to see this also happened in the Model S. probably. So anybody that is taking new deliveries of either the or the X. Please take a look at what your monroney sticker says and let us know. Next up, we have an update on Tesla autopilot rewrite Alon on twitter yesterday said Quote Limited Fasd Beta, releasing on Tuesday next week as promised. This will at first be limited to a small number of people who are expert and careful drivers and quote we last had an update on this about a month ago when John said quote releasing private Beta in two to four weeks public. Beta. Centers opt in four to six weeks after that. Then all US Tesla owners mid-december above schedules contingent upon not encountering major unexpected setbacks and quote. So this new tweet, it's a little bit less clear on which step or in if it is that I private. Beta. That he on his talking about here or if it's that limited public Beta for early access owners but to me, it does sound like that first. Step of being a private Beta. So that will come out next week one week from today on October twentieth. Apparently, if that's the case, it's about a week and a half out from that previous timeline but I think everybody can be pretty happy with that. If we extrapolate from that same timeline before using these new dates, we'd be four to six weeks out from early access, which would put a day range for. That from November seventeenth to December first depending on how wide this initial releases that early access program update that might be the first time that we actually start to see youtube videos and things of the sort pop up for the new rewrite though it is possible that we may see some of that as early as next week.
Battery Rollout Plan Plus Elon Musk Production Email
"We're here today we are talking about a potential roadmap for tests roll out of their new forty, six eighty battery cells, and then we have a few other news stories to go through on Tesla's well, we'll start off with batteries where we have quite a bit of new information coming from a very active Ilan on twitter today and the first tweet I want to highlight here is on the forty-six, eighty sal and gigabyte lint yuan in response to whole Mars on twitter says quote Berlin will. Use Forty eighty sell with structural battery pack and front and rear single piece castings. Also new paint system. A lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk Fremont and Shanghai will transition in about two years when new tack is proven and quote this whole situation with the ramp up of Gigabit, Lan has caused quite a bit of confusion because we do expect that to happen sometime pretty early in twenty twenty one probably sometime in q two would be the start production. But Tesla on the other hand side a lot of the technology during Battery Day was still in sort of a pilot phase and I think there were a lot of sumptious that initially this new Salle would be used in the Plaid Model S, which we know isn't expected until late twenty, twenty one. So that's where the confusion comes in of. Okay. What cells are going to be used in that initial motto why Production Pretty early next year from Giga Berlin with this tweet from Ilana it. Appears that we now have a pretty conclusive answer that from the beginning, it seems like tussle will be trying to use those forty six eighty tablets, battery cells, as well as these of of sell to pack or released sell to vehicles structure battery format as for the chemistry used in those cells. Tesla during the Battery Day presentation split up into three groups, iron based Nicholas, manganese, and high nickel in terms of cathodes and the model why image did appear in the nickel plus manganese section of that. Approach. So presumably, that's what we would see in the model. Why though did add in another tweet that quote we do expect to make heavy use of LLP for medium range cars and stationary storage and quote with L. B.. Being with the modern phosphate I think one of the key questions around the ramp up of the model y from Berlin is how Tesla handles that and the potential osborne effect that that could have on Mata y from let's say Shanghai or from Fremont this could be one of those ways if actually starts off with a lithium iron phosphate model Y in Berlin that would be. Obviously, a lower end vehicle that may have specs more comparable to what Tesla's producing today and Fremont, and presumably soon in Shanghai on the other hand, it would be a little bit unusual for Tesla to start production with some of that lower and vehicle usually they start on the higher end that work their way down. So I think whichever way Tesla approaches it is going to have its own set of issues and that's going to be one of the most interesting things to see how it gets handled. Next year we'll set that aside for now I wanNA talk more about the production and the timelines. Year homers reaction to this on twitter I'm not GonNa read all of it here but basically, he said that you had sandbagged the presentation during battery died in terms of of the timelines and he replied to those tweets by saying quote prototypes or a piece of cake. A high volume production of a new technology is extremely hard takes much longer than people think to climb the production s curve I can't emphasize enough that production is by far the hard part and quote this was something that Yulon emphasized consistently throughout the day presentation saying that not all the stuff is fully functional yet in a full. High speed production type of way just working really right now in a pilot line and with somewhat low yields or not yields up to what they would like quite yet. So that's what Tesla is working on figuring out right now at that pilot line, and once they do that hopefully, they can expand the concepts used in that pilot line pretty quickly in Gigabyte Lynn but I think that is the uncertainty that remains if the main issue is yield, Tesla knows how to settle this stuff up and they can get some production out of it. They may just not be able to produce at a higher. Rate for some period of time until those yields improve, obviously it's going to be more capital efficient if Tesla can figure that out on the pilot line before expanding dramatically in. Giga. Burlington but it's not like it's a binary thing. There's a lot of new technology here a lot of different steps in this process that Tesla's working on making more efficient and I'm sure some of those advancements those new technologies are ready to go right now with high yields while others such as the dry battery electrode process will probably take tesla a little bit more time to perfect. But just because a part of that. Process is imperfect yet doesn't mean that there's not going to be any production. It just means that production is going to be constrained until TUSLA can improve that the other element here that we haven't talked about yet is what about Giga Texas it seems pretty clear that if did you, Berlin is going to be using the new cell right off the bat. Then Gig a Texas probably also doing the same as we've talked about the targeted date for first substantial completion forget Texas is may first twenty twenty one. So we put all that together. It seems like by Q. Three next year Tesla is aiming. To have these new cells being produced at three locations, the pilot line and Fremont Gigabyte Lynn and access. So let's breakdown how this all might fit together and how it might spread across various product lines and will start with a couple of points. Tesla. Made at Battery Day. So the first is the plan Tesla said that in twenty twenty two, they hope to produce one hundred gigawatt hours of battery cells in house. We also know that the pilot line in Fremont, they hope to get that to output of ten gigawatt hours per year. But over time they hope to have each assembly line be capable. Of An output of twenty gigawatt hours per year. So piecing all these things together, I've put together a hypothetical forty-six eighty battery roadmap emphasis on hypothetical because a lot of this is just guesswork at this point in time but hopefully, we can kind of use this as a starting point and have a discussion about it and slowly gain more confidence in this roadmap as time goes by. So to orientate those of you that are watching on video on the left hand side, I have the products and then a hypothetical average capacity for each battery pack inside of those products then I have a table with. The number of units from each location the Fremont Pilot Line Giga Berlin and Gigi Texas, and then a second table showing the amount of batteries that would be required in gigawatt hours for that level of production each year

"This is Robert Ross with another episode of cars that matter I'm here today with Pete Evans. I'm glad you could join us. Hello Pete is the author of Nissan's e fifty years of exhilarating performance. It was just published this year by motor books an imprint of Corto press I'm here to tell you I have the book and hand and among all of the recent automotive publications this one really stands apart congratulations on a great project pay. Thank you very much I. really appreciate that it was a labor of love I put it together fairly quickly. Because it was something that Nissan jumped on board at a last minute decision was interesting being really did make a big deal out of the twenty fifth anniversary and I don't know why. But it didn't really occur to them to do much about the fiftieth anniversary. Then all of a sudden somebody internally said we have to and that was Hiroshi Mariah. They got in touch with their licensing agency, which is emi and EMI contact and motor books motor books. Contacted me because I had written an earlier version of thirty fifth anniversary, and so we put this together really in a little less than a year. Notice. The forward is by Hiroshi tomorrow and obviously had a hand in recognizing that fifty years of Zina's as you call it Pete. You've got kind of an interesting career. Obviously, you're Z. Aficionado, but you're also a professor in the Department of Communications Cal State Fullerton probably as we talk about your book about. The history of the Z. Cars will maybe get into a little bit of the market speak that went along with essentially introducing a whole car a whole new concept to a whole new audience. That is the North American audience for whom a sports car from Japan was a brand new unthinkable concept back in nineteen seventy. I know this isn't your first. Z.. Car Rodeo either because it published Z thirty, five years of Nissan Sports car in two, thousand five. It's hard to imagine that the name plate is as old as it is for its thirty fifth anniversary. There was some pretty exciting things happening to but I guess related start at the beginning. Let's go back and look Z. Legacy from the start you and I are old enough to remember that back in the sixties and early seventies Japanese cars were by enlarge disregard I'm being charitable I'd say joke in some ways but they were no joke because of course Honda and Toyota essentially took over their respective markets and Dotson did the same but really the only sports car we had back in the sixties was the Toyota two. Thousand and that was such a rare esoteric piece of work that it almost doesn't count. Nissan did try. They had a sixteen hundred little sports car was a little convertible started as a sixteen hundred. They call it the fair lady in Japan of course, and then they brought it over here to the US, and then it became a slightly larger motor and they had it with the two liter the colored, the two thousand by remember that two thousand. Well, a friend of mine had a Canary Yellow One and I thought it was an amazing thing. It was right up there with any MGB, except that it was more reliable and. A grey little competitive car and Peter Brock raised it. So did Bob Sharp on the East Coast and so that kind of really established footprint if you will for Nissan at least from a motor sports standpoint and it gave them some credibility and it really provided the power I guess internally to look at a genuine sports car hardtop version and you can always thank Mr k. you talk Yama who pushed that card the Z. initially and he was here in America as the president of Nissan, USA and he went back to Japan. And we really have to have a sports car that is affordable and is something that everyone can afford here in the United States, and so he basically got the idea of democratising a sports car. You mentioned the Toyota two thousand GT was an incredible car but didn't really have the legs to expand. They didn't really bring it over here in significant quantities and it was a very expensive car as opposed to little roadsters. Remember Papa Bondra used to thousands for his driving school they were so good and reliable and relatively inexpensive the. Toyota was essentially unaffordable and it was fragile and even though it did a little bit of racing there just wasn't enough critical mass to really make it stick. Nissan. Really wanted to be the first to come in their Honda was here but they made really small throwaway cars to begin with them shoebox as I think the only thing smaller was at Subaru three sixty that looked like an egg with. Wales. And Nissan was ahead of their time of course, they were called Dotson then but they came out with their to forty and. Late sixty nine, but they also had a pickup truck and so those were two key markets that they used to go after slightly different audiences. But that's how they penetrated the US market at least initial. So many times a great name plate like the to forty comes about because of the vision of a single person or a tight team and you talk about the talk cut yama or Mr K. Katayama. Son was obviously an interesting guy and he must have been doing something. Right? He lived to be one hundred, five years old. That's a remarkable thing in and of itself you speak very fondly of in your book can you give us a little insight into what it took to get his own corporate colleagues superiors to buy into his crazy idea as a sports car for America I think you just a force and he just had such incredible passion. I had the pleasure of meeting with him several times and you'd him not only for my previous book but also speaking to him in several the Zekan's and car shows I mean he was very passionate. As they said in his slogan Love Life Love People, you couldn't not like him I hate double negative but the fact is, is that I believe that his passion. and his persuasive skills were partially enough to demonstrate that he could sell this car United States and I think that's what it talked to convince his contemporaries, his colleagues in Japan that if he could have the opportunity to bring the Z. here in America, he would show them that that was the right car at the right time and he would be successful with it and they believed they were a little skeptical his colleagues in Japan but they obviously invested in the car and said, okay now it's up to you and your colleagues to make sure that this happens and it did

"Six weeks before the events of March Sixteenth Mickey Son Danny got a weird phone call from his Dad Mickey told him to be very careful and to make sure his wife Valorea and newborn son Travis were safe. He wouldn't provide any more details fast forward to March, and once again Danny's phone rang this time. It wasn't his dad it was one of his employees. He wouldn't say anything other than that Danny needed to drive to his dad's house in bradberry ASEP Danny got in his car and started driving you turn on the radio. There's a voice announcing some sort of celebrity murder, typical talk radio fodder but then Danny heard the word bradberry and his blood went cold as he pulled up to his dad's house at fifty three woodland drive. He saw that the driveway was blocked off with police tape news helicopters circled overhead Danny got out of his car and looked up the hill towards the house. His father's body surrounded by cops was lying prone on the concrete bloody and still. As, more family and friends learned of Mickey Intruders Murder One name was on everyone's lips. Mike Goodwin like I get that. That's a tough phone call to make. But I feel like the employees Kinda copped out a little bit whereas like, Hey, you should just go your dad's house like why what's wrong? I think maybe Disco Check Out Your Dad tells what's what's The anticipation of hearing bad news or the anticipation of senior DAD's dead body I. Think like paired with the radio and then pulling up in seeing police all around like having a piece of together to me. A motorsports stadium tour that was one of the earliest touring off road racing series in the United. States. If you if you watch stadium trucks today M tag is. Basically the progenitor of that. Data Mickey Thompson basically invented stadium trucks which are one of the. It's one of the coolest forms of racing to watch. Yeah I love. It's like look like just like trucks just going off ramps. Are they like, do they kind of like? They kind of do. The wants today there. They mostly do on or street courses. Where they have the ramps and stuff like that. I mean you'll see him if you go to the Long Beach Grand Prix they're racing on the same course with ramp setup but guys. 'em Tagged Stadium tour was like they would go to places like the l a coliseum or these other big stadiums setup courses that are almost like dirt dirt bike or supercross courses rather, which will also mentioned later in the episode and race trucks inside of a professionals pro sports stadium. So pretty amazing although Mickey already had a successful performance parts company, he loved throwing himself into projects tinkering with. Other. Projects like hydro barriers which are now ubiquitous traffic barriers that can be transported and filled with water to be used on race tracks and highways. Hey, you know I'm thinking about putting water in a barrel. What do you think about that? It'll never work. I've been tinkering. Barrels a lot of water. Yeah. Never Catch people don't want water in their barrels they want barrels for the cement. ooh. However Mickey's true passion as he entered, his golden era was still am tag, which only had a small staff apart from Mickey and Trudy by Nineteen eighty-four, both nicky and his wife were experiencing health issues. Mickey famously subsisted on a terrible junk food diet that was now taking a toll and they finally decided to take off some of the load by partnering 'em Tags Events with a motor sports promoter known as Mike Goodwin.

Drive was a fitting birthplace for a kid who would become defined by hot rods and dragsters. The valley is one of the original cradles of Car Culture I. I will say it still is today it's very like I went to see us you northridge up there in the valley and it is a muscle car town everyone drives either a charger challenger Camaro or Mustang it's pretty cool. I haven't met many people from the Valley with a valley accent most liked. Girls and Valley boys that I've talked to are from like Hollywood and Venice specifically. Venice. But never really never never from the valley there's I. Mean there's a lot of people. See us you northridge is a commuter school. There's a lot of people from that area that go there and I never really heard that typical valley you know yeah, I think it's kind of a pass a kind of thing. Now it was big at a time I. Don't think it's as big anymore you gotta meet some people from Venice. It's very much alive while not Nevada is on saying I think that the the new thing is. I had a check engine light a few days ago. Was not fire related. It just turns out that when my coil packs was bad and I had to change it out and not fixed it. So I'm pretty happy. "Guys. Welcome back to this show. How are you guys doing good very good. Thanks for having a crisp known well. Yeah Oh definitely, you guys are making some power moves in the world of Mo- par, and I'm really excited about your current project, which is the build Mo- projects. I've been talking about it as much as I can because I'm so excited about it but for those that aren't familiar with the build moped project, tell us what that's about. Sure. So earlier, this year especially with all the. Political he will and everybody being locked in their house and most experts being close. We felt like we really wanted to do something different for the drag racing ammo, par audience but for the most part people that liked to build and nearly race Mo- Parson. So we came up with what we call the V. Eight vote or the Cooperative Carville? Which which we originally named democracy on selects but elite stuck with the bill par. But the concept being that consumers enthusiasts could vote on Roughly. Ten to eleven eleven different stages of the build of a car that we would campaign in twenty twenty one. So the only thing we really had going into it was nominations by the vendors of what they thought. You know the four cars should be and what the racing sanctioned bodies should be that we participated in and from there it's been enthusiast votes, many times in the hundreds, and we're through think six votes now. So it's a it's getting interesting. We're we're now getting into the Technical Aspects of Picking drive lines and setting the car up for. Things that are really going to define how it runs and. Fuel that it uses in that. So really interesting. So the way that it's worked is about every two or three weeks we release a new vote and we do various marketing events to get the campaign out there make the poll available and then the people vote. For example right now, we're at the the engine build. Vote they're picking the enthusiasts are picking the shop they wanNA see building engine. Previous to that was the super chart, the the power and that the win went to the whipple super charger. So we're starting to define some of the more mechanical things but. It's been a really fun project. We're getting a lot of feedback. We actually get a lot of questions email to us, and it's just been fun to be able to interact with the audience and there are some prizes in there too that that I never expected. So that's been been a lot of fun to see what people really think and what they vote on for each phase of the car. Awesome what kind of questions are you getting about the car? So. Know even though we published that we're going to be running it in modern street hemi shootout people have asked us what class. That that, we're planning a running in you know what kind of fuel were planning on running? How big the tires will be. You know before it's funny. A lot of the things that they drill into are the questions that are going to get answered when the next votes come up. So they were asking us what engine shop. You be running a a moped transmission or not will we be running Dana or an eight and three quarter or not? You know what's the size of the root tires? and. Then, of course we get. Free unsolicited advice. Which I knew we would get with You know what we think we what what folks think we should be doing. And things like that. So it's been good. It's it's educating given that we've got a company that's going to be continuing to build cars are after this campaign is over. So this is actually serving as kind of a prototype for one of the bodies will be offering. As as a graduates to the. Final stages? Right on. So this is going to be a package that. Ready Chassis will be able to provide to people that you WANNA go fast correct. Yeah. We'll have it in. We'll have it in three different formats really well, actually four I should say is will will be publishing a book a manual on how to how to build the exact same car using the same package and some of the things that we faced in the process. You'll be able to build a a or by a rolling chassis that is painted and essentially built without drive line. And then you'll be able to get a relatively finished car with Dr Line and. Maybe leaving us some of the details out like safety Belsen parachutes and things like that or the completely assembled. Her and and tested. ready to rock version of. Of. The same car so An will probably offer popular colors as well as the factories watches that are available.

"Yeah. So today we're discussing Michelle. mouton. A woman. We've this is this the first time we've discussed a woman on the show. This might be the first episode dedicated to a lady. which is a bit embarrassing. I would say so yeah. But no better woman to start off this trend with and Michelle. She is easily one of the best rally drivers ever. She's a beast. So I'm really stoked that we can tell the story even if it took us a little while to get to it, that's on us but but it's interesting because motorsport is really one of the sports where women and men compete against each other as true like she's not the best. Female driver ever. She's one of the best rally drivers at. Yeah. Regardless of gender she's one of the greatest. and honestly like just watching a video of her rally driving makes me sweat. Over, yeah she's like she's the person who when we talk about. Like rally cars now are all-wheel-drive. Wheel drive. But when Audi showed up with quattro and just started smoking everybody that was Michelle. Meantime that was young Mouton Bay. mouton on the track. Yeah I mean. To your point James like drag racing of course is or was kind of dominated by women at one point all the force sisters were just tearing it up. There's really no reason. For it to be separated by gender in in Motor Sport Really of course right now there's the there's the W. series, which is a like a women's open-wheel series. At I think that's more for them to kind of get exposure and it proved themselves in like a formula car but I'm looking forward to seeing some of those drivers come up in the formula. One. Soon hopefully, it would just make it more interesting for crying out loud if nothing else I agree let's get into it a. all right. Let's fired up. First Berlin Production Equipment, New Largest Supercharger Location, Daimler Emissions
"Our here, and today we have a super charger network update, which is nice. Little throwback for those of you that have listened to the podcast for a long time I used to do those every day at the start of the podcast. We also have some news on Berlin paint a small little updates slash rumor. I would call it on Battery Day and the news on Daimler Nikola Motor as. Well. Tesla stock with another really strong day to day even though it was relatively quiet news wise finishing up seven point two percent to four hundred and forty nine dollars seventy six sense that compared to the Nasdaq up one point two percent we'll start off with these super charger news. This is coming from Brian Mac se on twitter, who is a long-time listener and I believe Patriot supporter of. The podcast who happen to come across a super charger network location under construction near Firebaugh California. As far as I can tell, this location had not yet been noticed. So upon Brian tweeting these out Tesla Motors Club Forum members did some digging on this and they were actually able to find that the permit for the site as well as planning documents for sort of a conglomerate travel center at. This location those documents disclosed that Tessa. We'll have fifty six spots for Tesla charging at this travel center. Assuming each of those spaces has a super charger associated with it. fifty-six chargers would put this as the largest superchargers location in North America and possibly in the world surpassing cattleman city in the United States at forty chargers and believe in China, there are a couple locations that have fifty chargers. So. Pretty exciting this location is between San Francisco and La driven miles. It's about two hundred and thirty miles from La and about one hundred and fifty from San Francisco. It's not clear if these will be all version three superchargers but I'd have to imagine that they would be and as far as other features go. It looks like about two thirds of them thirty eight of the fifty six. will be pull through hopefully accommodating the use of a trailer and making things a bit easier for the cyber truck and potentially also accommodating the semi of course, cincy unveil of the semi. We haven't heard much more about Tesla's mega charger plans. So hopefully, we get a bit of an update on that during battery debt. Right next today is an update on Gigabytes Lynn gigafactory underscore four on twitter. Has Been following. The gigafactory development closely looks like some equipment has started to arrive, and some of that equipment carries branding for Geico Tikey Shah? which is a paintshop solutions provider based in Milan Italy. There's also some signing there that is co branded between that company and desolate GEICO take show describes their approach by saying quote innovation is our weapon of choice were constantly increasing the technological possibilities in. Order to meet the needs of the most demanding customers in a highly competitive sector and quote they also seem to be heavily focused on sustainability and they're their paintshop operations. They have a project called the party's project, and they say quote with the Party's project launched in two thousand, five Geico Kotecki show was the world's first company to offer zero environmental impact paintshop reducing consumption by seventy percent and. So. Without really knowing much more about the company does he pretty good fit for Tesla we know Tesla has pretty big aspirations with the shop and gigabyte Lin Yuan talked about it many times and even setting Matt aside, it's good to start to see some production equipment on the grounds of Giga Berlian and though I haven't seen it yet. Maybe this gives us another milestone to compare the progress with Giga Shanghai from what I can. Tell, it looks like paintshop equipment started being put in place at Giga. Shanghai. In early to mid August of two thousand, nineteen with production of course, then starting about four months later. So if that's the case, if Berlin falls a similar time line that could potentially project out to start production and January probably best to keep expectations for later than that but I do think it's helpful to keep an eye on how those timelines compare all Right next up today is something that could end up being completely nothing but I thought it was at least interesting enough to share earlier today Fred Lammert over at electric tweeted out a couple of images of him holding a pretty significantly sized battery cell and Fred Ask if anyone has seen this battery cell before or you have some information about them, please reach out to him. A says also by the way, this new cell May. Or may not have been made by Tesla I don't really have much speculation to add this. A couple of people on twitter were saying that it does look like a tablets design which we've talked about and past episodes. But really just pointing out to say could be something to keep an eye out for the next couple of days if electric is able to you dig up a little bit more information on whatever this ends up being. Last couple of pieces of news here. Today I on Daimler Daimler has reached a settlement with the US government to pay one and a half billion dollars and settlements and penalties to the US and California State to resolve allegations of Daimler using emissions test cheating software to conceal the actual emissions from vehicles even with the settlement, and despite the fact that engineers at the EPA found software designed to cheat the emissions tests. Damore denies wrongdoing saying quote as stated in the consent degrees the. Class Action Settlement the company denies the authorities allegations as well as the class action plaintiffs claims and does not admit any liability to the United States. California plaintiffs or otherwise and quote. So I don't know kind of disappointing to see a settlement of that nature that doesn't require the admission of fault with such seemingly strong evidence against Daimler right lasting today is a quick update on Nikola Motors. It sounds like from the comments yesterday that most of you preferred that I don't do significantly. Deep dive on this budget stick to the high level updates, which I'm totally fine with if Trevor Milton wanted to come back on the PODCAST, I would probably do that. Otherwise, we'll stick with these updates anyway today the Wall Street Journal and other outlets are reporting that the Justice Department has started to also investigate Nikola Motors due to the allegations that they had misled investors by making exaggerated claims about their technology I know that sounds similar to

"This is Robert loss of welcome to another episode of cars that matter today we're joined by Dr Curtis Saunders, Mechanical Engineer Researcher at Johns Hopkins University Tower Things in Baltimore today, Curtis agreed Robert. It's a beautiful sunny day here in Curtis is here because he's the owner of a nineteen fourteen Ford model t now I guess I could make all kinds of jokes curtis about how you really need a PhD in mechanical engineering to work on one of these. But I'm sure it doesn't hurt. I we're going to dig into the history of the Ford model teachers to understand a little bit better. Why was such important automobile? The Ford model t is often named the car the century. Obviously, it's an important car. Why is it important to you? I should say while I'm a mechanical engineer I've always loved history. I'm always been a student of history and history has always been a passion of mine. So the model t important to to me. One of the reasons is just the impact it had on American history and just the general in addition just to manufacturing in general the manufacturing methods behind the model. t some of the things that Henry Ford merely pioneered with the car I was just really fast anyhow had in areas as well as the impact car itself had in American culture from what I understand. They made about fifteen million and they had quite a lifespan and first one came. Out in Nineteen Oh eight is that right? Yes. That is correct Kinda wrap things up by one, thousand, nine, hundred, Ninety, seven when by that time was almost as much of an antique as it is today it's amazing how long the car ran and even through its cycle while the appeared. So the car changed a lot of the underlying the chemical structure while had some changes remain basically the same, the same four cylinder engine, the chew speed transmission. The bones are really did run twenty years I remember years and years ago in my former life I worked with the operating engineers, UCLA. What do we have these emergency generator rooms now ucla campus was built back in the nineteen twenties and we actually had an emergency generator that was still powered by a Model T. engine this back in the eighties imagine that that old engine was deemed reliable enough and competent enough to be working all those decades later. Really Testament to the Durance of that particular design you talk about Henry, Ford and how the model t was really the first mass produced car but I almost get the feeling. Henry could have been making washing machines or vacuum cleaners in a lot of ways the model t was sort of a test bed for the whole production line process actually rates moving assembly line process was not unique to model ts and applied to so many different types of products from airplanes, trains, cars, like you said, also goods washing machines TV's. Of that type of process, we take it for granted now, but someone had to think of it I in there had to be a pioneer that type of industry that really started this whole thing not only introducing a whole new way of making things it was done. So efficiently and relatively inexpensively that I gave any American with a halfway decent paying job the opportunity to own a car or it's eight a here's rolling car off the assembly. Line every ninety seconds from what I understand though maybe you can correct me if I'm wrong the model t was such a grand vision of Henry Ford's that he actually set up manufacturing facilities or plants all around the country, and even in other comments, he truly believed it was the car for the masses I. Don't think he really viewed it as just something for a specific region or even a specific country her specific time thought he'd really. distill down essential components vehicle and that that's what anyone in the world would what I guess. There was more than just one model T. everything from pickup trucks to delivery vans they made a whole bunch of them didn't they? Absolutely, there is various types of cars from to Cedars. Cedars even enclosed cars and open cars later and the whole line of trucks. You can even buy a model t rolling chassis and build your own body for it. If you didn't like what Fort is offering, you could just build your own. You're not even limited cars like you said, the power plant could by the Ford engine, the Ford, power plant and just apple sorts of other applications that would make a nice Margarita blender wouldn't it just about the right amount of horsepower to get that is just just right. Everybody knows what one looks like but I suspect most people don't really understand what it takes to. Make one move got a little engine. What is like three liter inline four or something like that it's a little inline four and it has a two speed transmission. What's the horsepower output on that engine? As I said in the INTRO WE'RE GONNA be talking about option magazine today admittedly a topic I don't really know a lot about I'm more familiar with their video content on Youtube that's made its way to youtube nowadays. But yeah, I didn't really grow up with this. I was more of a hot rod magazine kind of Guy. If you can imagine that do you guys know anything about option magazine? Because I am old and was in highschool before Youtube was a thing. So you. It wasn't like a subscription even for you is more like you had to find old issues ordering old issues me and my friend Nathan. Order old issues. And we were like what the? The pages go backward. I don't have I don't have too much context on it I. The only thing I know is from researching. For different videos and I think the H K s up to speed talk a little bit about it but I know about like Daijiro but only in the context of like the early eighties like trying to set. Tesla is sourcing how vendors slash contractors to bid on work at the site and quote this user then shares some screen shots presumably of some documents involved in that bidding, the most interesting of which lays out a project schedule in that project schedule not a first substantial completion date of May I twenty twenty one according to the American Institute of Architects. Substantial completion is quote the stage in the progress of the work when the work or designated portion thereof is sufficiently complete in accordance with the contract documents so that the owner can occupy or utilize the work for its intended use and quote the schedule also notes that the first dry in what happened on December thirtieth twenty twenty I xdrive just means that everything is sort of sealed up with the building shell so that interior work can commence without having to be exposed to the elements, and then in a separate page here that has also included. There's a more detailed schedule noting that in September they'll be doing things like underground electrical, mechanical plumbing, etc.. October would be fencing porta-pottys waste removal metals, recycling recycling removal, and then November would be architectural interiors which based on the dry and date assume would be non weather sensitive into your stuff. So obviously take this for what it's worth. It has just forum posts, but the documents to me look like they would be pretty legitimate I. Don't think there's a ton of reason to doubt it. I. Both of those currently sit at eight to twelve weeks versus yesterday's ten to fourteen. Weeks and the model three has held steady for all trims at two to four weeks.

The back of the seat would open up and you can sit back there. Well, he owns one original condition. They still drive it to this day and I remember as a child going to their home and peaking in the garage and not only was the rock. Ni there. Need to be restored in the Shadows Bee's, and it was inspiring and he has since restored that commanders well, beautiful cars that led to a journey of understanding Raymond lowy and his influence with the star liner and and everything else that he did outside of automotive everything from the coke bottle two steamships, the example of cross industry designed capability, and how they can learn from each other. So those automobiles and being so enthralled with the shapes and forms and the mysterious nature of them. So that was kind of the start of it, but I couldn't afford Zion College I would have loved to have gone to CCS, I spent a couple of summer classes in graphic in other types of designs like pottery, Constanza, pottery as. A kid but it's learning POW powdery Auto Detroit on the why am I being exposed to this? But then there's incredible community college in mccomb county they're outside Detroit and they had a great drafting program. My opportunity to get into the big three was through drafting go. This is great. Fell in love with in high school, and now I can have a career doing this. So went into drafting CAD design hired. At Ford, Motor Company in Nineteen ninety-three as an intern doing cad purity aided design drafting and three D. modelling, and that's when that stuff was really just coming on board it used to be guys had to draw. So you were at the forefront of that new technology in many ways going back to the drawing real quick I think the thing that helps the most even to this day is understanding what A. French curve can do and a large spine. One of my projects at the college was to create an body car, GM car body side, and three different views, projecting the points in three different orthographic views and make the arc continuously perfectly smooth accelerated curves were necessary in all of us so that you could inevitably put that on aluminum plates that was a hard way to go but it was fun. So then. We get into Ford and they had their own homegrown computer system called the PG S and that was done on these lundy tubes that were tube TV's really with light pens and we stroke the light pens on the screen and rotate things around, and there's a little keyboard tracking our time talk about ours disappear quickly when you're building things I couldn't have thought I could of ended in a better career exam. Making something from nothing into three D. and having it show up on the road someday. The combination of excess liquidity in the banks and financial deregulation led to a massive economic boom known as Japan's economic miracle prices on domestic stocks and real estate had risen to an all time high tripling in value tripling tripling in value between nineteen, eighty, five and nineteen eighty-nine wealthy parents could afford to buy their children. "This week's project. Car of the week is actually a van and I'm starting to think I should just call this segment. Mo- par project of the week just because. You know I picked more than just cars for the segment. So be ready for that change. I'm trying to be a little bit more diverse with the Mo parts that I choose for this segment because I do like mo parts from all areas and all types of Mo- parts and I think that good moped projects aren't just cars sometimes their trucks, and since I'm on a van kick this week was a van and Let, me say that I actually set out to find van for this week's project. There was just one issue there aren't very many out there. So let's read the ad and then we'll talk some more about vans and why they can make cool projects. The van featured on this edition of Mo- Project of the week was posted on the Mo- part hundred facebook page on Sunday September sixth at nine. AM HERE IS THE AD. So it's longer than my dad's was since my dad's was a like this van the one in this ad is to tone it has a light blue base with a thick. Dark blue striped mid body in a dark blue roof. It has a windshield visor which is very buggy vanish and it has my favorite bubble windows of all time. The PENTASTAR portholes they are super rare and I'd love to hunt down a set for my future van project. But if stacy's van ends up being mind, then I'll just settle for the round portholes unless I can find. Those awesome. Pentastar. Wants this van. Also has a grant wood grain steering wheel, which adds to that nostalgic feeling along with that pop up Sunroof, and it looks like at one point back was done up like seventies custom but right now it's pretty bare, which is great. Because most of the time when you find these vans, the cargo area usually needs to be redone. These old buggy vans had all shag carpet and cabinets put in Old Saints and. Things like that. So chances are if you find one of these, it'll probably need new carpet and things like that. This one actually has a plywood floor and looking around it actually looks like the van was originally read. The good news is that it will be easy to strip the cargo area and get creative to create your own space. I. Like the idea of a modern version of a classic book Van Something. Creative enough that you can go to shows and show it off. But you can also go camping, and if you're the nomad life, you can hit the road and live that van life but it would also be cool to get this thing capable of hauling a race car that way you have a place to store your tools, parts, extra tires, and have a place to stay at the track instead of. A ten I really liked that idea for me I like all those possibilities but the possibility of having a mobile podcast studio when I go to events would be really cool and if I bring merch with me, it would make a great display for the Merch to this thing has a three eighteen. It's running and driving and hey, it stops too. So that's always nice I like projects that you can. Drive home and this thing is you know that type of a project, it even has some pin striping on the hood, which is cool because it's kind of like a throwback. It does need some new wheels and tires and some fifteen by ten on fats in the back and some fifteen by eight in the front would give this thing that groovy raked stance that was so popular with these vans back. In the day I, think that this van is also in desperate need of a front lip spoiler and the fender flares, which you can surprisingly still find if you look hard enough online but all in all, I'd say if you were interested in getting a Boogie van for a project for less than four grant, I think this one is a great candidate I actually did reach out to the seller just to. Feel the water and see what the temperature was like and it sounds like he's pretty firm with not much wiggle room. But he said that thirty five, hundred to the right person would take it home. Germany promises Elon Musk full support to get Tesla's Berlin plant ready
"Moving onto the stock, then volatile day for the Nasdaq and for Tesla Tesla finished down five point eight percent on the day to four hundred and forty seven dollars thirty seven cents. So just a bit above where the split happened at around four forty two but that did compared to the Nasdaq finishing up one percent today. So this provides a good illustration of the potential downsides of the at the market structure that Tesla has employed for this potential up to five. Billion, dollar capillaries that we had talked about yesterday. The stock is now down about ten percent from when that agreement was put in place, which demonstrates the risk of not just raising at that fixed price at the time. Of course, with the structure, you have to be comfortable with that risk and presumably not wanting to raise that money badly enough to do it at a lower price and status giving yourself the option if the price stays at that level or goes. Hi. I'm not sure currently on whether we get any sort of updates or when we get updates on whether or not Tesla has issued new shares as a part of that equity distribution agreement. So I'll try to do a little bit more digging on that but if anyone has the insight on that, please let me know for now though because the stock has fallen would be surprised if they have acted on that and issued any new shares we did have just. A couple of pieces of news specifically related to the stock today one is from significant Tesla investor Baillie Gifford. An investment firm that has for a long time held greater than five percent of the outstanding shares up Tesla stock that five percent level requires additional disclosures around trades with the SEC. So in an SEC, filing baillie Gifford has disclosed that their ownership stake in. Tesla has dropped below five percent of the company. I would assume the selling has been happening for. As has been dramatically rising, of course. So for firms that already had a significant portion of their portfolios in Tesla, it just becomes too overweight and they end up trimming it back to add more diversification to their portfolio. See the same sort of stuff from our best Baillie differed managing partner James Anderson said quote. The substantial increase in share price means that we needed to reduce our holding in order to reflect concentration guidelines which restrict the weight of a single stock in clans portfolios. However, we intend to remain significant shareholders for many years. Ahead, we remain very optimistic. About the future of the company, Tesla no longer faces any difficulty in raising capital at scale from outside sources, but should there be serious setbacks and share price. In other news on the SOX Today Bank of America analyst Jon Murphy has increased his price target from three hundred, fifty dollars per share to five hundred and fifty dollars per share I believe that the second highest now on the street in terms of a base case Murphy noted the strength into the underlying business that the high stock price affords. Tesla. Saying that it creates A. Positive feedback loop due to the low cost of capital that Tesla has available to it. Through follow on offerings I would definitely agree with that positive feedback loop that helps Tesla not only raise capital, but it should help them get better terms on debt perceived strength of the business by the market can help desolate negotiations with suppliers. Again, especially, help confidence in customers Tesla's can exist going. Forward to service their vehicles, if they do decide to purchase and hey, it's probably helped a lot of investors be able to afford the product, which is also not a bad thing i. think the downside is that with a high stock price, there's potentially less upside available. So it can be a little bit more difficult to acquire talented recruit talent because you don't really have that one. Hundred X upside in the stock anymore like you might add twenty billion or thirty billion. There are offsets to that too though of course, some of that reduced upside comes alongside reduced risk, which is also important in making career decisions anyway back to the Bank of America note, despite the two hundred dollar price target increased to five fifty Murphy does maintain a neutral rating on the stock. A lot of things are described value immediately, which I I really hate God on bring a trailer this week there is some Honda accord from the mid seventies that sold for like twenty one thousand dollars and I was like that car it's not worth that amount of money just because it's A condition four thousand dollars to a huge Honda accord. But because like there's such a hype around like Oh man this is like in this such and such condition with this miles and it's There's only so many of them like that's when money kind of ruins it in that culture of like wanting to have. "Everybody, Rob Power here. Today we have the good fortune to be joined by David trainer of New Constructs David. Put out a note last week with his team on Tesla that was relatively bearish. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to have somebody on the podcast. Maybe give a different perspective than what is sort give day to day and hopefully. We can both learn a little bit throughout the course of the conversation So David a former analyst with credit. Suisse. And then for the last couple decades, he is the founder and CEO of new contracts on investment research firm so David Nathan, you want to add to that in terms of your workings INS specifically this note on Tesla. Yes sure. No. We we're an independent research firm. So we don't doing any investment banking or trading There was a time when I ran a hedge fund will be don't do that anymore. So there's there's no short position in Tesla and honestly there's there's no axe to grind here. I'm flattered to to you on the show and I'm also a big fan of cars and I think beautiful. And I think would Elon Musk has been. Has Been Great for our world. I. Think he was really a tipping point in enforcing the big autos to to move more toward electric vehicles. What let's face it. You know one has to question why they never really wanted to do it on their own how they needed external government pressure to to increase gasoline efficiency. When that at the end of the day, we just lowered the cost of ownership for their product, which is a good thing but yet they didn't do it want us to wonder why that is. So I think he lawn. With respect to Tesla Electric Vehicles and our environment has done the world huge service. Insides one lead that fan I think the cars are beautiful. I wish I had one of my kids always rave about how much how awesome they are when they ride in one of their friends parents Tesla's it's funny in in. So I think there's a lot of good that has come out of what you musk is done at this space as well as other spaces. And the beautiful green cards. So you guys are kind of approaching it from a just an overvalued perspective on the company right now. Yeah. It's it's really kind of an old school throwback to the fiduciary in investor as opposed to the speculator the trader. Look there's no doubt you know as Jim, Cramer said he he's a fan test left for the last eighteen hundred points right? I mean look the momentum. The trading aspect here's Banal and it's been a huge wealth creator. An Art perspective is very narrowly focused on the fiduciary and decide the of risk. In, a market that's been such a strong performer. Since the The deer in in March you know, I think some people we got some feedback that people were kind of looking at how to manage whether or not we're at the top or or not in this market and we thought you know look. The first thing you do is identify where there's the most risk in your portfolio. So we kind of went through we cover around three thousand stocks as well as ETF's mutual funds and we looked for like, okay where's this? Where's the where's the risk extreme and then you know especially with Tesla, you gotta take into account all these sort of the optionality, all these great things that that Tesla might do. To, justify the future cashflows embedded in the stock price. And we went through the checklist and we thought, okay, we think there's a fair case to be made here for those with fiduciary responsibilities and produce responsibilities. To Take into account. Or. Consider. The risk in the stock relative to fundamentals. Sure. I know that that's a big part of your note later on. So definitely get through to some the valuation stuff So I thought probably the best way to kind of just kind of structure. This was to go point by point. I've had a lot of listeners that have read your note and have sort of asked me to give my my thoughts on it. So I thought you know what better way to do that than have the man himself here to discuss with me so Sweet. So you've got a lot of I mean this is probably a few thousand word article here. So let's just start right at the top. So you start off by saying. Really comparing the devaluation of tesla per car sold versus other automakers. I wanted to just sort of get your thoughts on this because I think you know this perspective or this this particular metric in isolation to me isn't all that particularly meaningful us are wanted to you just sort of get your take on why Joseph Start off with this and then get sort of my thoughts as well. Yeah, we're just sort of a level center to get a sense of how rich the expectations are and in just to give some perspective our approach valuation is is as I say, tomato analysts. Would you rather be a fortune teller or critic before to tell her and we see Mr Market or the stock market is a fortune teller. Here, she is giving us a price every day, and what we do new constructs is reverse engineer what the future cash flows, the revenue, the margins, the capital efficiency, the business, all that we reverse engineer with those need to be to justify the price and so. Really four forty is what I think of I. But. What I really want to do here is focused on mopus and celebrate kind of a special day Chris Welcome to the show. Thanks for having me on rob I'm happy to be here. Totally. So. Chris let some ground rules here. I'M A podcast year. Europe podcast her we either have to work together or we gotta go to like the death and Only one of us can win I'm all for working together. Sound Good Man before I ever got into podcasting. I was a fan of many automotive podcasts including yours and that kind of pave the way for me to go. You know I'm obviously not going to do a podcast about muscle cars because that would be competing with the big dogs but I decided to focus my podcast on what I'm absolutely one hundred percent passionate about which is parts totally at most that was tongue in cheek and it's a big world out here man, there's so much room and. This is our first conversation ever where are you? Where'd you grow up get into? Cars I grew up in Seattle Washington and I currently live about thirty miles north in Marysville. I grew up around Mope ours I spent a lot of my formative years in a nineteen seventy five dodge custom. What we know now as Boogie Van Really Yeah my dad bought a seventy five cargo van a dodge black nothing in it completely gutted and he built it from the ground up you know this shag carpet the bed in the. Back the spoiler, the porthole windows, the side of the crater mags, all the fender flares the whole kit and caboodle along with that vehicle my dad in one, thousand, nine, hundred, I was born in one, thousand, eight, five, thirty, five and my dad bought a brand new Daytona Turbo Z in one, thousand, nine, hundred, five black with louvers and the car has a talking computer in it so it will tell you if your doors are ajar and things. Like that and as a kid, I thought that was the coolest ever being I'm watching rider on TV and my dad's car as a young kid I'm like Oh my God, my dad's car talks to. So ever since I was young Mo parts have had an impact on my life and when I was young, my dad didn't have a par muscle car but I, had heard stories of his nineteen sixty nine dodge dart that used to go. To, the street races with and just have a general good time with and I was always intrigued I'm a car enthusiast I. I, respect anybody that has a passion for cars. I don't care if it's a Ford Chevy or an import I respect all but I've always had a deep seated love for Mo- powers and when I got older, I can finally afford to get myself a couple of projects. So here we are what were your first products? My first Mo Pars were a nineteen sixty-nine Dodge Dart coincidentally, the same color as my dad's name I've found that, and now I also have a nineteen seventy six dodge deal one, hundred short bed pickup truck that I love as well, and that was kind of like my answer to the C. Tens because I've had see tens before in the past before I got into buying my. Own mopeds, construction company, and the owner bought me a seat in. So I've had my fair share of different vehicles but something always dragged me back to mow pars in when I was finally in a position to get myself a couple I never looked back.

You've called it a cult stock gotten into some interaction with Ilan on twitter over the last I think probably eighteen to twelve months. You've you've definitely become a lot more bullish, which was great. Timing has the stock has reflected that as well. So I just love to hear sort of the evolution of thought process on tussle over the last couple of years. Great. Okay. When he came out I thought it was too hot. And I. I said people should sell it now I know that I had subsequent met. You must get a dinner party. And he belittled me he. Space said that if tried question, his analysis of the wall have giant solar field in Colorado we're all other energy's GonNa be provided from five years announcement five years I've seen it yet. He did pronounced me as a hologram basically. Didn't even exist. I thought it was one of the greatest put downs ever except I wish it weren't addressed. Thank. Eh former. Mathematicians Twenty, seven percent. But here's what's happened to me. I looked at his a stock. I didn't look at it. And I think that what happened is basically a a religious could it was a religious? Conversion. I went out to California my daughter had just driven. From Oregon she was living to Los Angeles. And she talked about charging talks about it was about the flatulence button instead you know data been driving. For twelve years. I never cared what a job. It's never been important. She had a beat up two, thousand, eight A. Ford fiesta she'd been driving she wasn't a corporate, but Tesla made her into Cooper's. So then I went out to sea venture mine one executive is so come bally's a company and another former CFO and they had all tesla's. and. My wife who is a complete corpus I mean a nut car person just loves it her favorite everything's ninety, four range over that. She has she said this is it a she drove it and she said this is it. Now we have not bought one yet because she's we're going. To be able to say listen Jim, you should buy because you live in some new. Jersey accuses go around car but when I was driving with the person who was retired was the CFO as you know what my daughter loves it, my wife loves it. It's so cool but they don't have the financials did naked so that I can recommend it to sixty. And he looked at me turn Amigos. GM naked race two billion dollars. Like. Religious, conversion. The conversion was right there because I knew rob. At, the balance sheet was not questioned. Admin. Panel table ever since we caught a lot of points I, continue to recommend it. I should have realized along the way that when Jay Leno told me Jim. Is the greatest car coming around one fifty. I should've just changed my mind but I hadn't been in the car rob other than. My friend, kwame picked me up to a little bit. And when you have a person who's never driven a car saying, this is like the greatest thing ever doesn't think of as a car and then you have the coordinate nut Lisa who says, this is the greatest thing ever and you have a CFO's very rigorous who said look they can raise the money I said, what am I doing? Why am I fighting the truth? Why am I fighting progress? So rob I surrendered and the best qualified made this year.

"This week's project car of the week is one of my favorite cars that I've come across recently, and it was posted on the one hundred facebook page on Tuesday. August eleventh at twelve pm it pretty much checks all the boxes for what I think is great in a project car. So let's not beat around the bush. Let's read the AD. Nineteen Sixty Eight Dodge coronet superbeet twelve thousand five hundred dollars, Omaha Nebraska. West Virginia car original numbers matching three, eighty three or four speed tags still intact on transmission rear end and carburetor includes vendor tag and bill. She cleaned Nebraska title needs complete restoration does not run, but motor spins free folks. What we have right here is the quintessential ratty mobile muscle car a nineteen, sixty eight super be the first year for Dodge Budget Street brawler aimed at the youth enthusiast market during the rise of the muscle car era and the answer to Plymouth. Road runner folks, I love Super Bees and I really WanNa have one in my collection someday. I've actually thought about not even getting a new challenger and just finding an old super be that I could build a modernized A. Twelve with modern Hammy in a six pack Efi setup just because the idea that car sounds really cool to me. But of course, this is a nineteen, sixty eight so while it wouldn't necessarily make a good h well, tribute car, it would still make one hell of a cool ratty Mo- par with a modern power plant but I digress this be would be an awesome project car for someone or heck you know get it running and drive the wheels off of this car has perfect sunburned Patina and I'm not sure why but faded bumble bee stripes awesome on these old ratty Radebe's, and they really kick up the cool factor on these ratty mopeds for me especially with the super vs because. In my opinion and has one of the greatest graphic patches of all time on the rear tail end of it. It's got the Bumblebee Stripe and it's got the circle this a superbeing it's got the super be in it. I. Just think it's really cool. But this car is numbers matching, which is amazing and even more amazing is that this thing still has the tags on the Trans rear end and carb not to mention that even has the fender tags still attached and. You know. The picture of this thing shows under the seat is an amazingly, well preserved build sheet, which is really really cool. I, mean what's not to like about this thing? It even has a clean title for God sakes the engine isn't stuck, which is good but it doesn't run, which means it doesn't drive but you know what I like about that the low price of twelve thousand dollars you know twelve, thousand, five hundred were being specific but let's be real as long as the engine ain't stuck. You know as well as I do that the odds of getting this old Mo- par fired up are definitely in our favor. And Hey did I mention this four speed man I'm about to liquidate all of my Mo- pars and head out to Nebraska and get this thing if it hasn't already sold by the time, this episode airs you know what I mean. But of course, kidding but nobody wants to buy my junk on. There's cool cars out there like this that still need to be saved but this car you know it does need work all over the place. The interior exterior under the hood, the suspension, and I'm sure it's all pretty extensive work but the car is complete and you know that alone makes it a great project in my opinion because it's hard enough to find numbers matching project car let alone project super be that has a lot of the necessary things for documentation for nearly ten thousand dollars. You know what? I mean this twelve five that's not bad. That's not a far stretch from ten. You know I've seen projects, superbeets and CORONET RT's and chargers you know. Closer to twenty thousand or even in some cases over twenty thousand well over twenty thousand. So for twelve, thousand, five, hundred, I'm not complaining. But of course, I'd like to get it for ten grand but you know me, I'm a low baller but I think you'd be really hard pressed to find something equivalent in the market right now for around the same price for a car that's complete like this. But if there are any out there that you Nov, let me know because I'd love to check them out feature right here project the week you know folks. Told thousand five hundred dollars in my opinion this is a great by for a really cool car. This is one of those instances where once again I'm a day late in about twelve thousand, four, hundred, ninety, nine dollars short because I would love to have this car and I would absolutely pay single penny. Obviously we're talking coast to coast I'm here in Los Angeles, and you're on the eastern side of the US and were doing this by way of Zoom. So it's not in the studio, but it allows some long distance conversation really in much the same way that you probably deal with. So many of the collectors nowadays things have certainly changed for all of us in the way that we communicate and weighed. The options are being held virtual car shows everything's changed slightly only. It's just for short periods. We'll talk about some of those things both the short-term effects maybe some of the long term positive benefits that come from this, it's hard to imagine there are any, but they're actually might be but instead of going forward in time, let's go back in time for a second. Let me just ask you the obvious. Question a lifetime love affair with cars, full classics, postwar sports, and racing cars, and probably even some modern collectibles. How did this car fixation begin when I was born into it? My father was founder the model a restorers club America back in nineteen fifty one year I was born cars were basically in our family from the beginning and then my dad restored cars for a living whether it was Duesenberg? Packard? As or buicks whatever they were my cousin built hot rods in a lean to next to my father's shop, and then a mile up the road was candy pools sports car shop where they had about every type sports car in the World Men Candy Pool is very famous race car drivers. So there was race cars, Ferraris Maserati. Oscars every type of car. That was rare stuff back then and I think that's how I got my ashes for everything to do with automobiles was brought up on every type of automobile. That's quite a broad swath. You Talk About Your Dad restoring everything from model as to Duisenburg's there couldn't be a wider gulf between those two and it's interesting. You mentioned that let's drill down into. That for just a second Wayne I often wonder the model a was such a ubiquitous machine, obviously the model t and then the model put Henry Ford on the map with a little company we call the Blue Oval but all the guys that actually treasure those cars and restore them and kept him alive for so many decades when they were well past. Their prime. It's very rare to see those cars any longer they sorta seems almost evaporated off the surface the earth they've become pretty popular again though in that era forcible way to get into the hobby and you could basically model for today from a catalog. So because of the ease of getting a apart the east of the restoration and the fun factor. With the driving aspect of it, I mean, these cars are a Lotta Fun to drive. Easy on reasonably priced. So we see model as actually their value and increasing summer bar. That's a great harbinger of things to come then because they really were sort of the cornerstone of the collector hobby back before guys can afford their full classics and all the fancy stuff from Europe. I starting going to Hershey with my dad and nine hundred, fifty, seven was six years old I think her she started either in fifty five, hundred, fifty, six does either liver fear second year, and then probably the third year I was there it became part. Of Our family, my dad created the model, a restorers club. He just come out of service in flight forty, eight and gentleman brought him a model a Ford to do some paint work on any restored to perfection for the gentleman brought it to local car show nine, hundred fifty and they wouldn't let him show it because they said that's just some old used car as nothing special and he got upset about that and went home and created the model, every stores America which thousands of people all over the world still supporting that club.

"There's a very solid chance that Georgia Jaro is the greatest car designer of all time. His genius was in his ability to combine amazing artistic creativity with practical engineering know how his designs are futuristic even fifty years later. But when he drew them, they weren't just concepts. They were practical blueprints. WHO's measurements were strictly proportioned to be something. A driver could actually use that combination of artistic innovation and practicality made Jaro one of the. Most bankable designers of the seventies and eighties all told his decades long career. He designed over two hundred cars totaling over sixty million in sales sixty million units. You've almost definitely ridden or driven a car that Gerardo originally designed I always confused by that sixty million because I was like that could be just the mark one Gulf in one year. That's like, yeah, that's the mark one golf if they sold them for sixty dollars. Yeah like not even they sold them for like three like. Yeah, yes. Sixty million units. That's nuts. That's like conservatively. A. Like a Billion Dollars Oh like billions I'd probably say more than that. Yeah. Long Story Short to jar continues to have a massive influence on automotive design but who influenced to Jaro? Born in one, thousand, nine, hundred, thirty, eight he couldn't come from a long line of car designers because cars hadn't been around for that long. Instead his father grandfather and great-grandfather were all artists who specialized in painting elaborate murals and frescos in the churches and palaces of Italy. Naturally Young Georgetta himself wanted to follow the family tradition and be a painter himself. However, real life intervened in the depressed post World War Two economy of Italy Mario Jer. Father recognized his son's artistic talent but wanted to make sure Jetta learned practical applications for his skills. Italy was no longer a country of churches and palaces that needed painting after centuries of tradition it was now being pushed into modernity by global forces of change. So as a teenager Ger, jetta was sent sixty miles north from Garesh CEO father's town to the city of Turin to study technical drawing and costume design. Strange Mix. Drafting table on one side of the room. One of those cool. Sewing Mannequins on the other yet no head no arms no legs just that torso the bus. All of his costumes look like little cars. For centuries, terrain has been a major cultural hub of Italy with centuries of painters opera, an architecture that tradition of creativity was alive and well in the nineteen fifties when Georgetta arrived to the city. It must have been an incredibly inspiring place for a brilliant teenage artist to be sent to study. Terrain also happened to be the home of the country's automotive industry which had thrived in the early twentieth century but had been knocked on its by World War Two with scoreboard alert Italy Kinda lost most importantly though Fiat was based in Teheran Fiat was the General Motors of. And as time went on, it acquired. So many of its competitors that a couple of decades later Fiat was practically the Italian auto industry. Have you guys ever seen the test track? They have on top of the Fiat factory yet so cool it's so cool. So much of success is simply being in the right place at the right time and for a young designer to Rin of the nineteen fifties was exactly that time and place by then the Italian economy was picking up and car manufacturing was a vital ingredient to the recovery. Meanwhile, Jaro was studying at art school during the day and studying technical design at night among the things he was drawing were cars and one fateful day jar sketches crossed the desk of Dante Giacosa Fiat's technical director. GIACOSA was the designer of the Fiat Five, hundred, a compact city car that would sell nearly four million units and cement Fiat's postwar dominance. He was impressed enough to bring Jaro, who had no work experience to that point on board as a junior designer at the age of seventeen. That's a gamble I mean that's. Amazing. What kind of drawings were you guys doing at seventeen? I actually had this cool skull that I was really cultivating through high school I was doing skull. I would draw zero. Skull. And the Greg Logo. Nice that's all you need. So we would probably work at We'd probably be doing designs for Spencer's sounds like. A. Jarrah started at Fiat during a golden age of the Italian auto and a big reason for the industry success was the increasing collaboration between the engineers and designers.
