The Masque of the Red Death and A Memento Mori Halloween, Part 2 | Ep. 17

Whoa. The mask of the red death by Edgar Allan Poe. The red dad had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal or so hideous blood was avatar, and it seal the redness and a hor- of blood. There were sharp pains and sudden dizziness and then profuse bleeding at the Poor's with this elation. Scarlet Staines upon the body. And especially on the face of the victim where the pest ban which shut him out from the aid. And from the sympathy of fellow men. And the whole seizure progress and termination of the disease where the incidents of half an hour. But the prince Prospero was happy and dauntless than sagacious when his demands were half depopulated, he some into his presence a thousand HALE and light hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court. I will these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his Castellazzi abbey's. This wasn't extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric. Yet, August taste, a strong lofty wall girdled in this wall had gates of iron the courtiers having entered brought furnaces and Massey hammers and welded the bolts they resolve to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or a frenzy from within the abbey was amply provisioned with such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion the external world could take care of it self. In the meantime, it was folly to grieve or to think the prince had provided all the plants is a pleasure. There were buffoons. They were improvisatory. There are ballet dancers there were musicians. There was beauty. There was wine. All these. Security where within without was the red death. It was toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of his seclusion. I well the pestilence. Raged most furiously abroad that the prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a mask ball of the most unusual magnificence. It was a beloved. She was seen that masquerade. But first, let me tell the rooms in which it was held there were seven and imperial suite in many palaces, however such sweets form long and straight vista while the folding doors slide back nearly to the walls of either hand. So that the view of the whole extent is scarcely impeded. Hear the case was very different as might have been expected from the duke's love of the bizarre the apartments were so irregularly disposed that division embraced. But little more than one at a time. There was a sharp turn it every twenty or thirty yards and at each turn a novel effect to the right and left in the middle of each wall. A tall narrow gothic window looked out upon a closed corridor which pursued the windings of the sweet. These windows were of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the prevailing, Hugh of the decorations of the chamber in which it opened that at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, and blue and vividly, blue windows, the second chamber was purple, and it's ornaments and tapistries. And here the pains were purple the third was grand throughout. And so we're the Casement's the fourth was. Furnished and lighted was orange the fifth was white the sex with violet the seven department was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung all over the ceiling and down the walls falling in heavy bolts upon a carpet of the same material, and Hugh, but in this chamber only the color of the windows fail to correspond with the decorations. The pains here were scarlet a deep blood color. Now, I know one of the seven apartments was there any lamp or candelabrum amid the profusion of golden ornaments that lay scattered to and fro or depended from the roof. There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within a suite of chambers. But in a corridors that follow the sweet there stood opposite to each window, a heavy tripod bearing abras year a fire that projected it's race through the tinted glass, and so glaringly illuminated the room, and that's where produced a multitude of Godley Advantest appearances. But in the western are black chamber the effect of the Firelight that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood tinted pains was ghastly in the extreme. I'm produced so wild look upon the countenances of those who entered there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all. It was in this apartment. Also that there stood against a western wall. A gigantic caulk of ebony it's pendulum swung to and fro. With a doll. Heavy monotonous Klein, and when the minute hand made a circuit of the face and the hour was to be stricken there came from the brazen. Lungs of the clock a sound which was clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical, but of so peculiar a note and emphasis that at each lapse of an hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause momentarily and their performance to hearken to the sound, and thus the Walsers perforce seized their Evelyn's, and there was a brief disconcert of the whole gay company. And while the chimes of the clock yet rang. It was observed that the gideo- st- group pale and the more aged and sedate pass their hands over their brows. As if in confused reverie or meditation. But when the echoes had fully ceased a light laughter at once pervaded the assembly. The musicians look at each other and smiled as if at their own nervousness and folly I made whispering vows each to the other that the next chiming of the clock. She produced in them. No, similar emotion. And then after the lapse of sixty minutes, which embrace three thousand and six hundred seconds of the time that flies there came yet. Another chiming of the clock. And then we're the same disconcert and trim US news and meditation as before. But in spite of these things, it was a gay magnificent revel, the taste of the Duke were Keeler, he had a fine I for colors and effects, he disregarded, the decor of MIR fashion, his plans were bold and fiery, and it's conceptions glowed with barbaric luster. There were some who would have thought him mad his followers felt that. He was not it was necessary to hear and see and touch him to be sure that he was not. He had directed in. Great part, the movable embellishments of the seven chambers upon occasion of this great feat. And it was his own guiding taste which had given character to the masqueraders. Be sure they were grotesque there were much glare and gooder pay conc- and phantasm much of what had been sent seen in her nanny. There were era Basque figures with unsuited limbs appointments there were delirious fancies such as a madman fashions there was much of the beautiful much of the wanton much of the bizarre. Something of the terrible and not a little of that which might have excited disgust to and fro in the seven chambers. They're stocked. In fact, a multitude of dreams and these dreams writhed in an about taking Hugh from the rooms and causing the wild music of the orchestra to see as the echo of. Or steps and a non their strikes. Ebony clock stands in the hall of the velvet. And then for a moment all is still and all is silent. Save for the voice of the clock. The dreams are stiff frozen as a stand by the echoes of chime dia way, they have endured but an instant and a light half subdued laughter floats after them as they depart. And now again, the music swells and dreams live and rive to and fro more merrily than ever taking Hugh from the many tinted windows through which dream to raise of the tripods, but to the chamber which lies most westwardly of the seven there are now none of the massacres who venture for the night is waning away and they're flows rudgear light through the blood colored pains and the blackness of the sable drapery Paul's and to him whose foot. Falls upon the sable carpet. There comes from the near clock of ebony a muffled peel more solemnly empathetic than any which reaches their ears who indulged in the more remote Gatti's of the other apartments. But these other apartments were densely crowded and in them beat feverishly the heart of life and the rebel went wurley on Intel at length there. Commenced the sounding of midnight upon the clock, and then music ceased as I have told and the evolution of the Walters were quieted, and there was an easy cessation of all things as before. But now there were twelve strokes to be sounded by the bell of the clock. And it happened perhaps the more of thought crept with more time into the meditations of the thoughtful among those who rebelled and thus to had happened perhaps that before the last echoes of the last chime had utterly sunk into silence. It's there were many individuals in the crowd who had found leisure to become aware of the presence of a mask figure which had arrested the attention of no single individual before. And the rumor of this new presence having spread itself whispering Lee around there. Arose at length from the whole company, a buzz or murmur expressive of disapprobation and surprise, and then finally of tear of horror and of disgust in an assembly phantasm 's such as I have painted it may well be supposed that no ordinary parents excited such sensation in truth. The masquerade license of the night was nearly unlimited. But the figure in question had out herited Herod and gone beyond the bounds of even the princes indefinite decorum. There are cords in the heart of the most reckless which cannot be touched without emotion. Even with the utterly lost to whom life and death are equally jests. There are matters of which no just can be made the whole company indeed seem now deeply to feel that in a costume and bearing the stranger. Neither wit nor propriety existed. The figure was tall and gaunt and trotted from head to toe and the Habil laments of the grave the mask which concealed the visage was made. So nearly to resemble the countenance of a stiffened corpse that the closest scrutiny must have had difficulty and detecting cheat. And yet all this might have been endured if not approved by the mad revelers around, but the mumber had gone so far as to assume the type of the red death his vest was dappled in blood and his broad brow. With all the features of the face must be speckled with a scarlet whore. When the eyes of prince Prospero fell upon the spectral image, which with a slow and solemn movement as if more fully to sustain its role stocked to and fro among the Walsers. He was seen to be convulsed. And the first moment with a strong shudder, either of tear or distaste but in the next his brow reddened with rage who dares. He demanded Horsely of the courtiers who stood near him who dares and Salta with this blasphemous mockery. Sees him mask him that we may know whom we have to hang it. Sunrise from the battlements it was in the eastern or blue chamber in which the prince Prospero as he uttered. These words they rang throughout the seven rooms loudly and clearly for the prince was bald and robust man and the music had become hushed at the waving of his hand. It was in the blue room worsted, the prince with a group of pale courtiers by side at first as he spoke. There was a slight rushing movement of this group and the direction of the intruder who at the moment was also near at hand. And now with deliberate and stately step made closer approach to the speaker. But from a certain nameless. Aw, with which the maddest sumptious of the murmur had inspired the whole party. There were found none who put forth hand to seize him. So that unimpeded he passed within a yard of the Princess person. And while the vast assembly as if with one impulse shrank from the centers of the rooms to the walls he made his way on interrupted -ly. But with the same solemn and measure step, which distinguished him from the first through the blue chamber to the purple through the purple to the grain through the green to the orange through this again to the white and even thence to the violet air a decided movement have been made to arrest him. It was then however that the prince Prospero Manding with rage and the shame of his own momentary cowardice rushed hurriedly through the six chambers. Well, non followed him on account of a deadly terror that had seized upon all he bore a loft drawn daggers and had approached in rapid impetuosity to then three or four feet of. They're retreating figure when the latter. Having attained the extremity of the velvet apartment turned suddenly confronted his pursuer. There was a sharp cry. And a dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet upon which instantly afterwards fell prostate in death. The prince Prospero then summoning, the wild courage of despair, a throng of revellers at once threw themselves into the black apartment and seizing the mumber who's tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebonic clock. Gasped in an utter -able hor at finding the grave ceremonies and corpse like mask, which they handled with so violent at rudeness unintended by any tangible for and now was knowledge the presence of the right death. He'd come faith in the night and one by one drop revelers and the blood booth halls of the rebel and died each and the despairing posture of. His fall and the life of the ebonic clock went out with that of the last of the gay and the flames of the tripods expired and darkness and decay and the red death health elemental dominion overall. This is a strange and unusual podcast with Allison hawks. And welcome to episode seventeen the conclusion to a memento Mori Halloween. Memento Mori as mentioned in the previous episode means remember death or remember, you must die, and it has found its place in modern western culture in our celebration of Halloween with styrofoam gravestones swirled and missed from fog machines dotting wants to greet trick or treaters Pasig, skeletons dangling from trees opposed John Kelly and costumed ghosts and zombies ringing doorbells begging for treats, we flirt with facing death. Well, at the same time holding it at arm's length in playful denial, and this is not unlike prince Prospero and nobles of the mask of the red death after witnessing devastating plague sweep through the land in great denial reality, they hide from the sickness with an abbey believing. They're safe as those just outside their walls, die horrifically. They think they can conquer death even as a market and their bizarre, costumes and ghastly core denial and believe that they've outwitted death is so great in fact that they gleefully take part in a masquerade ball, the seven rooms in which the party takes place are arranged east to west like the course of the sun and are thought to represent seven different stages of life with the colors of the room meant to evoke those stages blue for birth purple for youth green for out leci-, orange for adulthood, white for old age violet for imminent, death and a block and scarlet room representing death itself. The last room with its eerie light streaming through blood red windows is dominated by a huge. Ebony clock that strikes fear into the hearts of everyone there when it China's the hour the trimming of the clock does not disrupt a masquerade for long, however as one in all. Turn to dancing and celebration until it strikes midnight. The Cox chiming is my mental Maury in itself. As music disrupts all Mary meant to say that time is running out and death will eventually find you death holds aluminum dominion over all prince Prospero mask ball is also reminiscent of the dance of death portrayed in medieval paintings and murals as a skeleton or many skeletons laid wrongs of people to the grave, just as the prince leads his guests to the red death. Don, McNabb the of death developed after the block plague hit Europe as referenced in the last episode. And it's what's inspired are images of skeletal grim reapers on Halloween, but then another epidemic different sort spread through Europe not long after the plagues began to strike beginning. And if team. And century, a sinister fear infected reactionary minds resulting in widespread devastating witch hunts which lasted well into the eighteenth century. Thousands of people mostly women were imprisoned tortured burned at the stake beheaded or hanged during his period of time, and it would be through these witch hunts that some of Halloween most endearing icons and imagery would be unwittingly added help came in. Establishing these symbols of Halloween when the infamous Mallya smell of care was published in fourteen eighty seven translated into English, the book's title means hammer of witches, and it was an instant smash hit a best seller, especially among the witch hunting set and within its pages, which is forever became explicitly linked to the devil so much show. In fact, that it was claimed that which is and the devil even engage in sexual activity during some of these which trials allegations were made the accused participated, and they're demonic Sabbath on all. Hollows? And there is a theory that the choice of all hallows as a major holiday for witches and devils was no accident, but was actually done it where they specific political agenda in mind during king Henry eighth reign which lasted from fifteen nine through fifteen forty seven. He saw two separate the church of England from the Vatican mission which continued into the reign of his daughter. Elizabeth I and both monarchs viewed All Saints day as a loathsome. Paypal holiday and issued proclamations attempting to quell it celebration, so linking the devil which is with that day suited their plans. Just fine. Then in fifteen ninety came to north Barrick which trials which would notably associate which is with Halloween linking the two forevermore when King James the sixth of Scotland sailed to Denmark to retrieve his betrothed Princess Anne storms raged at sea making his journey. A harrowing and dangerous won several Scots were then accused of employing witchcraft in order to prevent the marriage. This was alleged to have been done as a group of which is assembled on Halloween where they wickedly danced and a graveyard under cover of night and sung an incantation, which conjured the devil who they then pledged their undying allegiance to their confessions. Coerced under torture further claimed they on earth. Corpses. From new graveyard dismembered. Them tied those rotting putrid body parts cats. And then tossed a whole bloody mess into the sea. And there are attempts to summon a storm to kill the king. King James the sixth who would go on to become King James the first when he became the ruling monarch of England became fixated on the threat of witches and their practices after his involvement and north Barrick trials, and he went on to write and publish Damon -nology and fifteen ninety seven as I sort of philosophical dissertation on magic which craft Andy g. Soon after James was made his king William Shakespeare wrote MacBeth impart to honor at elicited approval of new Royal patron MacBeth was set in Scotland the home of his new king and direct concepts and rituals described in Dame analogy and also during the north Barrick which trials were lifted to create the three weird sisters and their portrayal of the practice of witchcraft. During one of their incantations, the weird sisters famously chanted double double toil and trouble fire, burn and cauldron bubble. So after the infamous north Barrick which trials and the writing of Dame analogy and MacBeth both inspired by those events. How do we was now firmly associated with witches cats, cauldrons, brooms and the devil? And it's the devil who remains Halloween most controversial figure it is believed by some historians got the development of the devil as this villainous over the top monstrous adversary of all that is Christian and good may have occurred as the church sought to revamp the old pagan horned gods into the representation of alternate evil. And as mentioned the devils connection to Halloween, I appears in sociation with which is an example of this occurred in fifteen ninety seven when Thomas layoffs a Scottish man who would be convicted of witchcraft and burned at the stake was accused quote, I've having come upon Halloween about midnight, accompanied by his mother and many other sources, and which is to the market and fish cross of Aberdeen under the conduct and guiding of the devil present. With them all in company playing before them on this kind of instrument when they all danced about both the set crosses and the meal market along past-time and quote. Belief that which is danced with the devil on Halloween night became so common in Scotland that they're developed a myth that cats were especially tired the day after Halloween from having carried witches to their festivities with the devil. The night before with its rich and sinister lower Halla weaned wasn't easily forgotten. However, it would hit a major setback when parliament banned all festivals in England except for Guy Fawkes day in sixteen forty seven. But the eve continued to be observed in countries with strong Celtic histories in Ireland, Scotland Wales and the isle of man Scotland in particular embrace the holidays dark romantic and haunting ghostly ways, and it was from there that the earliest mentions of Halloween in poetry emanated with one of the first coming from Scotland's, national Bard Robert burns in seventeen eighty five. He. Wrote Halloween a poem that reveals what Halloween had evolved into and by then parties and fortune telling games were the main focus of the Scottish Halloween celebration. Most of his fortune telling was focused on discovering the identity of once future spouse with many of these rituals described in the poem, burn writes, a group Halloween revelers venturing into kale field to pool. Stocks and inactivity that was commonly referred to as Kaeling this ritual was performed in a number of ways. But a typical way it was done was to have the fortune seeker enter the field blindfolded or backwards and during the inspection of the chosen stock. The nature of one's future. Spouse was revealed. This was also done in Ireland with cabbages. There were countless methods of demonstration, however with some of these rituals involving looking into a mirror on Halloween night. But many of these nations involved belief in the Wraith or fetch which was basically the spirit of someone not yet dead and burns wrote about one of the more creepy rituals involving the belief the fortune sticker enters barn and first calls on the devil and takes down an instrument used in winnowing corn and simulates the act of separating corn from chaff three times. And then once this is completed the specter of one's future spouse. The Ray would pass through the barn. Activities surrounding acts of nation were played in Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well. But their door to door begging was focused on more prominently. Both the Scottish Irish had a great deal folklore which centered on ferries and Halloween was frequently featured in those stories in Northern Ireland people were often a bit leery about allowing children out on Halloween night due to the belief that they could be carried off by fairies. And that concern was still felt by many into the twentieth century. In order to protect them against these mischievous, other worldly creatures children sometimes had their hair rubbed with a mixture of dry, oatmeal and salt babies were also thought to be at risk on Halloween of being carried away and replaced with a fairy child. And for the infant's protection. Oftentimes an object made of iron would be placed in or over there. Crib. In wales. Halloween, tradition included, a belief in the custom of the church porch with this custom anyone who dared to stand by church windows at midnight on Halloween may here, the evil and slithering voice of the devil. Conducting a sermon within in which he named all those who would die in the parish the coming year. Welsh women also frequently gathered at churches on Halloween believing the flickering candlelight could offer them I go into the fates. But the custom of Soling or Seoul Kang was a practice, which took place more universally throughout the British Isles, and is believed to be one of the earliest activities that became a Halloween tradition. This most often involve children, though, at times adults engaged as well and still line consisted of going begging from home to home offering prayers for the souls who live there in exchange for food drinks coins are soul cake, not an entirely dissimilar accustom from modern day trick or treat. But from its ancient and at times sacred roots hollowing was certain to die a slow death. Or at least remain a pretty obscure holiday if it had stayed clinging all made to its Gaelic. Celtic lands. However in the nineteenth century Halloween would find a new home to settle and to grow in a home in a young nation. That was still on the search for identity, and this was a nation who developed a culture, perhaps due to a sort of adolescence, insecurity that adhered to the philosophy? That bigger always meant better Holloway, lean was growing up and leaving home and heading out across the Halloween was about to emigrate to America. And the nineteenth century, a German journalist summed up the American mentality. When he wrote quote to say that something is large massive gigantic is in America. Not mere statement of fact, but the highest commendation and quote. And for better or worse. Once we Americans got our hands on Halloween. It's growth exploded, picking up our extreme and thrill seeking jeans along the way to become one of our biggest annual celebrations in doing. So however, it became almost unrecognizable to its beginnings. But even so at center, it's still retains much of its Celtic DNA. But first before this big American change how we had to get here, and it came along with a massive waves of Irish immigrants in the mid nineteenth century. The Irish would also be joined by nearly half a million Scott says well settling in the new world during the latter half of the nineteenth century. And these Celtic people displaced, a strange new world held onto their ancient customs and festivals and embraced and shared them. In a way, they'd probably never done before. This time of influx of the Irish and Scots as well as others from the British Isles just so happened to coincide with the emergence of the middle class in America. This new class was suddenly afforded a bit more leisure time and a little extra spending money than any other generation before filling the sun rush of their upward mobility, America's developed an infatuation with their British cousins having always been a bit self conscious of their identity as a rustic uncultured new country. Americans had always harboured a bit of envy of the British as perceive them to be much more sophisticated and refined this fascination with all things British achieve new heights. When the wildly popular Queen, Victoria, ascended to the throne in eighteen thirty seven reports, our travels holiday customs, fashions and more were always being printed in publications all over. Erica and Victoria, had a deep love for the Celtic Scottish countryside so much so that her husband Prince Albert purchased bowel moral castle in Scotland as a gift for his beloved bride. In eighteen sixty nine Victoria, spent Halloween at Balmoral Castle. And what happened that night was widely reported quote as the shades of the evening were closing in numbers of torchlights were observed approaching the castle dancing was commenced by the bearers dancing, a who Chari in fine style to the lilting strains of Mr Ross the queen's piper. After dancing for some time, the torch bearers proceeded round the castle in Marshall order and as they were proceeding down a granite staircase. At the northwest corner of the castle the procession presented a singularly, beautiful and romantic appearance. Having made the circuit of the castle the remainder of the torches worth round in a pile at the southwest corner. Thus forming a large bonfire which was speedily augmented with other combustibles Intel formed a burning mass of huge proportions round, which dancing was spiritedly carried on. Her majesty witnessed the proceedings with apparent interest for some time and quote. I'm probably not on coincidentally soon after this account of Torius Scottish Halloween. The first mentions of American Halloween celebrations began to appear and one of the first things Americans added to the festive ities and late nineteenth century would become the most popular Halloween icon from then on the pumpkin. There's a legend of a man named Jack A-block Smith, which the devil. It's been told in hundreds of versions, but typically ends in Jack's rejection from both heaven and hell after his death leaving him to wander the earth forever with only the light emanating, and is carved out turn up to keep him from being shrouded in utter darkness. Said to be named for this legendary Jack jack-o-lanterns had been connected with Halloween on the British Isles for quite a long time. And those countries just as in the story turn-ups, we're the most common vegetable used and they're making native to North America. However was the pumpkin which created a bigger, brighter and more aesthetically pleasing, Jack lantern and the ideal. Jacko lantern was changed forevermore not long after the turn of the twentieth century. Young American boys began to embrace the old Irish tradition of pranking on Halloween, but this at first relatively harmless mischief-making eventually turned into a major problem, especially in cities as it evolved into destructive vandalism by the nineteen twenties. Telephone poles saw down cars overturned windows broken. And. Much more increasingly became more and more the typical way of celebrating Halloween. The monetary damage reach such a high in nineteen thirty three in fact that year's activities infamously, but it to being dubbed black Halloween. But instead of just shutting the whole gown towns began to make efforts to turn Halloween around schools neighborhoods and civic groups began to offer children alternative activities like costumed parties parades on that day. And this proactive need to sanction enticing community, led non-criminal Halloween celebrations, ultimately led to our ritualized trick or treat and in America. At least by the end of the second World War triggered treating had become customary throughout the country. The very act of creating these annual rituals for Halloween in American society. Only further served to increase its growing popularity even though they were originally created pretty much only as a distraction for troublemakers. But now every child expected and wanted to take part. The emerging this holidays new traditions spawned the Halloween industry and generated a demand for media. That would create the perfect spooky atmosphere for day. The dad were anciently believed to walk among the living. In the nineteen fifties Universal Studios released it's fifty two horror films, which included their old monster classics, Frankenstein, Dracula the wolf man and the mummy to air on TV and this kept the roster scary characters who would now be associated with a holiday expanding. But it early sixties airings of old horror films, presented by creepy. Costumed hosts who became minor celebrities splashed across black and white screens every weekend digitally songs like nineteen sixty two's, the monster. Mash climbed a charts. Holloway had found fertile soil and the post war economic, boom and thrill seeking culture of America it which grew rapidly. But in those early decades Halloween had pretty much been relegated to children's activities. This would change though as an astrologer baby. Boomer generation grew to adulthood, Halloween had belonged to them as children, and they weren't willing to give it up the recreation of Halloween for adults began in earnest and culminated in popular culture with the decidedly on child-friendly film. John carpenter's Halloween in nineteen seventy eight. Halloween now came to be for everyone as dolt, Don costumes, some leaning toward the sexy and partied with crippling named cocktails at hand. And I have to confess I'm one of those adults who never stopped celebrating Halloween as I pretty much wear costumes every year and often attend spooky booze fueled events like the Hawthorne Halloween ball and Santa Massachusetts. But that confession. I can't imagine as a real surprise. Though kids are still very much included and sweetly spooky side of Halloween for teens and adults. The fright factor about titties has just continued to increase as more and more bloody haunted attractions. Spring up everywhere Holloway has become big business. At least in America. The Halloween is not new it celebration is definitely a modern creation and one that has mazed and sometimes be wilder many as swiftly grown and observance. What is it about how that has made? It takes so strong and quick a hold. What's made it just so damn irresistible? Modern Halloween has developed characteristics, which are both dark and light steeply morbid and terrorizing on one side. But it's also playful and fantastical on Halloween, the Macab death, and a k become things we coquettish Lee wink at. The greatest fears associated with humanity are injected into our lives at Halloween time designated to face, death and our demons, but it is done in a sort of light hearted mocking way. And as we dress up in scary, costumes and immerse our minds in the dread and panic of for films and haunted attractions. We are literally looking fears in the face it done, however on arms, and that can feel very empowering. Eighteenth century Irish statesman, Edmund Burke, once said terror is a passion which always produces delight. When it does not press to close Burke. It seems understood something of the nature and psychology of fear the fear produced during activties like those rounding Halloween can trigger our fight or flight response. And the chemicals that create that response are also involved other positive emotional states such as happiness and excitement. It creates a natural high a rush a high arousal state, but why well we experience legitimate threat, positive emotions are not achieved. So what's the difference? Turns out the difference between these controlled scary activities and actual threats has everything to do with context. When the thinking part of our brain communicates with the emotional part of our brain telling it that we're actually okay that were in a safe space. We then immediately shift the way we are experiencing that high arousal state, and we've switched from a state of fear to one of enjoyment or excitement, we can only really enjoy a scary situation when we feel that we're in nice safe environment to enjoy that surge of adrenaline, and orphans and dopamine that comes with fight or flight, we must be certain we are safe. This is often seen and haunted house attractions. These places trigger our senses through startled scares and our senses are tied directly to our fear response which trigger physical reactions, but with lightning fast processing are Brian's. Quickly communicate that these scares are not in fact, real threats and with an instant, you go from screaming and. Jumping to laughing and smiling the key component and being able to enjoy her and scary as sense of control when we control the when and where and perceived protected space, we are able to overcome the initial fight or flight rush leaving us with a sense of satisfaction and confidence in our ability to confront those things that terrified us. And yet as we acknowledge the morbidity of Halloween and rebel and symbols of death. Most of us don't take it very seriously, we oddly expose ourselves to existential fears, but only do once they've been dressed up in fantasy and burlesque contorted into Mira caricatures of death safe parodies. Did the Cal celebrated feasted and often drank to intoxication during Salman the way debuted death and interacted with it during her festivities was quite different us. They took it very seriously. But why so different? And why do we so often play with death? Like, it's a toy on Halloween. Sigmund? Freud wrote it isn't deed impossible to imagine our death, and whenever we attempt to do. So we can perceive that we are. In fact, still present as spectators hence at the bottom. No one believes in his own death or to put the same thing in another way. And the conscience every one of us is convinced of his own immortality. It may be nearly impossible to conceptualize our eventual earthly non-existence, however, the contemplation of death the purposeful actively turning our minds to a mental Maury has shown to be beneficial valuable exercise because a grave awareness of our mortality pushes us to live. Our good life. We become aware of physical health and are more likely to take care of our bodies. We worked to build and nourish enriching relationships with those around us and once the brevity of our time sinks in it. Also, drives us to finally write that book that's been on our minds forever or complete our studies or traveled to Africa. We've always dreamed of we're beginning to do the things we always wanted to do and tackle what have been called our mortality projects. And this generally benefits ourselves as well. As those around us. The medieval European murals of skeletons dancing, the sick rotting and dying to their graves. We're not painted purely to concentrate on the dreadful and ghoulish. Instead the message was to live today. Enjoy your time don't waste your time is short the dance crab was really a celebration of life. Not death, author and philosopher Sam Cain wrote contemplation of the hour of our death is paradoxically the tincture that as weakness to mortality. We may never be able to reach the depth of devotion and thought to death that the ancient Gaelic health's did. But this is largely due to the fact that they were living in a world of pretty science all was a mystery. Magic was real knife was incredibly fragile and unknown encompassed much more for them than it does for us for them. Always cloaked. Dark fog of pretty in light -ment, but the farther we've come from the magic and mystery of our past the more we've come to need Halloween autumn is that time of the year when everything grows brilliant, beautiful fire glows from every tree just before all of nature dies. It's no accident. Halloween is our celebration. Just as everything is dying. Our senses are heightened just before the dark time of the year. Life is shown to be at its most breathtakingly spectacular just before death. All this culminates celebration of Halloween. It is simply magic. Holloway injury. Ray Bradbury, invoking autumn. Senses. Definitely describes a world on Halloween. And every time I read it. I think I can't imagine a world without Halloween. The wind outside nested in each tree. Prowl the sidewalks invisible. Treads like unseen cats. Tom Skelton shivered anyone could say that. The wind was a special win this night and darkness took on a special feel because it was all hallows eve everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold, orange velvet. Smoke pants it up out of a thousand chimneys like the plumes of funeral parades from kitchen windows Griffin to pumpkin smells gorge being cut pies. Being baked. Until next time.
