Almost the only real casualties attorney's Mama's double boiler chalk up one double baller we owe to Momma tell right I mean there's only a hole in one top it ought to single out pretty well L.. That sounds on the complicated side. David starting really is nice to be an architect. What do you mean Nice? I mean it is. It's fun an architect have a good time being an architect come on in dotting. I can't hear you how nick myself with this. Con- founded founded razor. I forgot to bring a new blade with me when we came over to mothers last night. Nick yourself badly to an architect has a good time with his. Ouch now what's happened. I just nicked myself again with this confounded raising all yes. I'm not used to talking while I shave my talk lures and until you started now but you were singing much different I don't know what I'm so happy about it contagious. You caught it from me. I just I just remembered that we have to have dinner with your aunt Louise Tonight. Well we have to eat somewhere as well bid at in the wheezes on the theory. That if you're going to be shot you might as well be hung. We wouldn't be saddled enough to eat at home anyway. We can leave early. Takes more time for people to get up in the morning then for one. Actually it takes twice as long David Top. If you kiss me it'll take twice as long again out and you smell pretty. That's a nice way for a man. The smell I love the way men smell of shaving soap. You had a lot of experience. Oh dear and I. I tried so hard to keep my past secrets David. I never dreamed an architect did more than just draw. Pictures on paper. Never Dream in an architect doesn't do what doesn't do more than just draw pretty pictures on pieces of colored paper. Oh where's my tie. Oh here it is. That's only the beginning. He supervises the construction schedules. The work gets the Mason finished before the Carbon Start and the carpenters out before the plumbers. The plumbers out out before the electric electric lines out before the painters and architects work is never done should be useful to an architect very useful to this architect indispensable in fact. I don't know how this particular architect ever got along without without you. David will never get to praxis. All right come along. You'd rather eat. I wouldn't rather oh darling I can't believe it will be in our own apartment tonight. It'll be like a honeymoon. I wish I could be sure. The painters will be finished cousin cousin. We couldn't wait and they promised they'd be out. I don't trust painters promises woman's time you sure we'll have something to sleep on this too. I promise to. I ordered the beds to be delivered. The staff and the kitchen stuff's coming. Maybe I have been missing out and not having a woman pod. You've got one now how to fit here Yar. It was a lot of furniture and boxes delivered for US yours devastating in the bit Lem. Everything in that little room is going to be awfully crowded. I moved out again and the paint as finished. Initially when the painter Finney he promised to be all through. Today it'd be the five o'clock shopping will be finished the floors and out. So you got to highly Mrs Know Certainly will hurt Mr not know. Be here any minute I give you your keys and I will be downstairs if you want me. Thank you but I don't think I need to tell tomorrow for you. Just go I've got measures. Oh you're the painter. What are you doing year law? Mrs Promise faithfully would be finished with the painting this afternoon. Won't you be. I'll be out just a little more go capital way. You walk over there. I left path boy in the bedroom. never tailed Lal Eddie tenants. Wanting things hurry. They just don't seem to want to paint dry. I'm sorry I've been a nuisance to you but I was so anxious to Galway's people anxious to get in and then come the moving men and they don't care for painters slam bang now in around. That's too bad nobody cares about pain. The paper hangers is the worst of all paper and paste all over the place competition. I guess that's what it is so I guess that's what it is but we're lucky we are having any paper at least all pain. Yeah but you'll be having lookout lady for the wet floor going into the bedroom addresses. That's what they all say someone else coming. Hey not so fast lead paint. You can't come in watch trout. He'll watch how am I GONNA get. This law fainted. If people are gonNA be tromping across it I promise. I won't trump you see I live. Yeah Lady of the House. She's in a back bedroom. Did you hear what he called me. Wonderful what the painter you call Me Lady of the House. I don't know when anything is made me feel as in our eight is that David What Sun's gone. Well maybe it has a date with some other apartment down the stretch. We better hurry right now. And get dressed Brat. Louise's dinner do say dress. Didn't I tell you I was so busy. I just. She called this morning and especially and I told her we would. That was nice have you. You promised your at Louise and I'm the one that has to crawl into a boil shirt. Why do we have to dress up? Well that's what I didn't tell you. Well tell me now at we thought it would be a good idea for us to meet her friends. The van Meryl's because they are going to do over their house than she thought it would be nice for them to meet an architect boil shirt. Do you know what I think. Now I think at Louisa as a colossal pain in the neck the job. Oh there's no possible way of getting out of it anyway. Mom Be Their Day so it won't be so terribly bad for you now. Let's see if our friend the painters finished the coast is player not good. I'm already Eddie. Hold on a minute. What's wrong or painter with? The persecution complex has painted himself out the front door and he's painted us in and David he couldn't have. He promised he'd be finished. And we could move in this afternoon. Dauphin think did he actually promised that we could move in this afternoon. Well did he. Didn't he well. Maybe not exactly. But that's what he implied. He said he'd be finished this afternoon and any sensible person would think that with the painters. Got Any sensible person with no that paint takes a number of hours to dry. That's very inconsiderate of but anyway couldn't we tip talker on the theory that tip toes. Don't count off good but we leave our pretty little tip toes. It was permanently recorded on our living room floor. Oh condemn painted over tomorrow. They could when you would undoubtedly get yourself fainted and again on a next time might not be my luck to be painted in with you. We've got to get out. What paint would say we're not not going to get out? You seem to be enjoying this. I have an idea you planned it all me. I have absolutely nothing to do with David. This isn't any joke about Louise's dinner party. I was thinking of that. What were you thinking? I was thinking how nice it was. We couldn't go go terrible. So terrible about being cooped up with me under the best laid schemes of mice and men often workout gotten the most wonderful way. David van Meryl's and the cousins Hamadou was really being given for us dialing. I've ruined everything and I wanted. That'd be suggest you couldn't have done better even if you'd known what you were doing to be really honest I don't Wanna go either only what I'll need as cloud every silver lining if we miss that Louise's dinner party. We want to eat with star. We'll we'll get foods now you say wait a minute. Good that you can't scream out of a window. Oh my captain neighbors. I don't give a hoot fret I know but you come up there yeah I it was just too far below. Oh David you've ruined our reputation. That's better than ruining the pain. I'm not sure I am downing. I feel like an awful fool. Did I say you weren't really thing to have done. People do lot sillier things fall out of love get divorced and if as the Norton. Oh Yeah Fridge Mrs Norton Sweat. The painter told me you had gone out but you had not gone out very definitely we had not gone out and now it would seem that very definitely we are not going to go often troubles at all. In fact we can manage beautifully. Talk with your health. What could I do well? If you get along broome example you could reach some food across to us without touching the floor. That would be good. There's the food well if you could run down to the DELICATESSEN. For example you could get some for roast beef sandwich not no cheese and to speak than we can split all right with mustard and some pickles. Jewish you sure. This is fun David. Louisa I'll fix that too. Can you reach the telephone there in the Foyer Fritz. Yes I can me too plaza fight for seven seven. I am dialing plaza. Five four or seven seven so I did. Be Able to go where you want. Do what you want. And all these things center around your spending habits habits they certainly do. 'cause I've said it here on the air and it certainly isn't mind. It's not what you make. It's what you spend and we are going into that time time of the year when spending what it's all about they call it black Friday because they go into the black from supposedly I. I'm pretty sure that retailers there's have been in the black for a long time but Let's let's go ahead and play along with their magic little world where they don't make any money till December okay uh-huh and this story coming from. Yahoo is disturbs me because I consider sort of frugality to be the cornerstone of living You know a free life. Indeed with a hundred and sixty five million people expected to shop over this five day weekend which means by the way that more than half of America is not and I was gonna say that's like half the population yeah thereabouts and by the away. This is You know that that's the weekend that was ending and spend more than last year. Borrowing is also on the rise by using credit cards as popular Goto. WHO option around Christmas holiday loans are also gaining traction? One in three Americans have or are planning to take out a personal loan loan to cover holiday shopping expenses. I didn't even know this existed Canton I I. I've not heard of this. It's not been marketed to me. I have not received an email email a phone call a letter in the mail that says hey captain. Would you like to take out a loan to cover your Christmas gift buying expenses so I mean of. Of course I've heard of credit cards. I'm not that far under a rock. I think credit cards are great as long as you pay them off at the end of the month. But that's the trick right is that they give them mm to you in the hopes that you don't and clearly they're still giving them out which leads me to believe that people are not paying them off at the end of the month. Oh no they're not consumer. The debt is on the rise and I remember a year. He was two thousand and five in that year Americans spent more they made. Do you know what happened in that year. No the great recession. The the housing the housing crisis started began which which then kicked off the great recession. After that those two thousand eight right. Yeah something in there somewhere on the whole thing but I can tell you you know three four four five six you decide for your family how long it was years of economic hardship followed bad bad spending habits by Americans. I don't understand I realize that it's the holiday season thing right and this is you know those folks in markets such as credit cards for example personal loans. You know that kind of thing trying to drum up business make more money for themselves. But I don't understand you know first of all like the holiday season in my opinion should just be hanging out with family and friends right gift-giving like if somebody in your life has done something for you or or you want to do something for them. Stop letting it be just around this time of year. You know anytime of year is a good time to give somebody a gift. Yeah and in fact I would argue that. It makes it a little more special if you don't do it around the holidays unquote and I do. I mean I can kinda see Z.. Gifts if you've got a big family so you've got a big family and y'all like to do Christmas at the house and everybody has gifts and it's part of the thing is gift giving the fine but you need to control your spending. I mean if we're talking coffee cups for everybody okay if you go into debt for it right like that just seems obscure to me so you know my mother demands to be able to give give gifts During holiday we My wife and I choose not to give each other gifts for anything Because the presumption is that we want something we'll discuss discuss it with the other person and we'll get that thing whatever it is true and if it's small will have bought already and if it is big you'd better have a discussion before you just go and and get that because maybe I wanted read or whatever and but you know I. It's fair so she wants to get me sweaters. She wants to get me socks she she wants to get me underpants and I appreciate those things I do now. Those don't cost much and I ask for gifts that don't cost much. Sometimes she'll ask and sometimes there's all say it has happened. There's this thing that I would not spend money on myself but I think it wouldn't be a terrible idea. And then maybe she'll get that I. I don't know I wouldn't remember because I wouldn't have if I wanted it that badly. I would have got it but we have a kid and obviously he has some expectation for gifts. My wife and I give my son who's eleven years old one present from us for Christmas and one for his birthday and it's usually something that he you know he's he's planning on this. It's it's a three figure gift. Okay you know I try not to make it too expensive but okay I can do this. And then maybe some things stock stocking suffer kind of things really small stuff my mother and my in laws they buy them things. And he's the kid that's in the vicinity. My mother doesn't have any grandchildren. My inlaws only have one. That's nearby and of course they send stuff to the others whatever they want about buy gifts and that's fine and that's to me. What what Christmas is about? But if you want to buy something buy something little or here's my personal favorite. This is what I prefer to get at. Christmas is something I can consume. I'm right now. Make me a gift that I can eat. Well yeah you're touching on something very very much that is my preference which is Not Bad touch. Good touch the point of making a gift right. I can tell you that. Some of the coolest gifts that I've ever either received or or even given to somebody else have been something that I made And I started to seep into my brain just from doing music right One of my friends musician. Kinda guy broke because he spent all his money on going on tour. Whatever holiday season rolled around? But he had a little four-track portable studio kind of thing put a mic up recorded a couple of Christmas songs that he wrote himself. You know and like gave that out for Christmas. That was his his presence to anybody. Really I mean think about that right that's a reproducible gift in the digital age that he and like everybody was he was the talk of the gift giving in community For that particular gift instead of going out and buying something from the big ticket store Amazon. Or what have you you know regardless of the cost you know. What did it cost this guy to do it? Some time some heart. It was made with love. You know what I mean and so that was the gift that like sort of seemed to rise to the top and that's the type of the different. I prefer to give and receive. If I'm going to for me. Something that happened last year that I recall and I don't really recall much about gifts left last year but I recall this one. A friend of my wife heard me say that I like rice. crispy treats homemade rice. crispy treats not the ones you buy in the right. And she decided to make me a little gift of four rice crispy treats remained with like regular ones and the cocoa ones and the fruity pebbles ones. And you get the weed ones I. I don't know I don't know weed ones my remember those problems and I'm not even sure what the the fourth one was. But I remember there were four and I thought wow this is great. I enjoyed them You know there were some. I liked better than others but that I got to find out. I don't know that I've ever had anything like that. And and I can't imagine that was terribly costly right right and I was you know it was great gift not everybody likes Rice. crispy treats as much as I do but Komo Fudge. There's a winner about just Like homemade cookies people who bake right. Yeah no doubt are my favorites right. The the Chris the cookies that go around Christmas uh-huh what does those things. There's cookies that you get that are decorated in all different shapes. That just come out at Christmas time. Normally I would eat them but it's the holidays so I do us. Yeah absolutely. What are your thoughts? Because I feel like Americans are spending too much money on the holidays. What should they for Christmas? Eight fifty five four fifty free. I'm free talk live. It's mark with you and the captain we are talking about at this time holiday shopping not just best holiday shopping but holiday debt will or going into debt specifically for holiday shopping. Is I believe the article alludes to anyway and and I I don't have the highest hopes for America This is this is an ongoing theme for several years here. Captain and the reason is is i. Don't think Americans and I don't know about the rest of the world. I've only lived in one place. I don't think Americans really learn lessons. I think they are fat and lazy. And Sassy and don't learn crap. We learn from the past that people seldom learn from the past. Okay so here's what the Mongols did right or the I should say say the Laker Gang. Sarasin Horse Right. Okay sorry my bad. Yeah so these guys Mongols are a specific type. So let's go with Saracens the SARACENS would you know every couple of hundred years raid some city and take it over. And and then they'd rule it for a generation or two or three and then lose it and the reason is according to them what their philosophy was is that our children just become too fat and lazy and Sassine. You know they don't know anything about being you know hard warrior and all that other stuff he had other wearing silken find clothes and You know they we. We got here because we were drinking. fermented Mare's milk out on the steps. Yes and that's all we had and we liked it and we walked uphill both ways. And the whole you've heard the you so one of the points where they had some success with they they were sending all the noble kids back out to basically Mongol camp out on the steps go live a hard life kid. Come back when you're tough right right and I'm I don't know whether they did it the whole time or just a portion of their youth exactly how it went but I thought this is kind of what we do would cap you know. Send my kids to go sleep in sheds and be eaten up by mosquitoes. So there'll be a little tougher and I think it's a great idea but we don't. We'll have that kind of my generation generation X. isn't exactly the rough hewn rugged individualist that perhaps perhaps some generations prior to us were. I mean the greatest generation loves to take that little little name for themselves. Greatest Chitter little egotistical is to call. Yes but I mean there's something about somebody who came out of the depression that has a you know a little harder edge to it. Yeah now what did do is we had to go through the great recession and other generations did too but you know I kind of think of by my my family started right. My son was born in two thousand and eight and we were forged in this particular timeframe one paycheck back and pay our house off in less than three years on a middle-class paycheck. Well so and I'm very proud of my wife for that accomplishment. I do take any credit for it at all. No that's impressive. And what she had to relent. There was one meal out a week Usually like Pete searched for fried chicken. It's nothing really really super fancy but one meal out per weaken we scrimped and saved and I feel like we learned some lessons in our family regarding that however however I'm very concerned that some Americans are not learning this lesson when I read an article from Yahoo News that says that one in three Americans is looking at taking a special holiday personal loan. That doesn't touch on the ones that are going to use credit cards to go into debt this holiday season which says to me that probably you too thirds of Americans are gonNA dead it up this holiday season and to me. There's no I mean think about this for a second ladies and gentlemen among the ones that are going to go into the debt this holiday season. The person for whom you're buying that gift would they really want you in debt to buy them. Whatever that gift is I mean yes? There's some awesome gifts out there. No doubt but for me most of them are just crap you know I mean I got all the sweaters I really need I can. I can limp by on on sweaters and socks and head Ed and UNDIES. Have you ever made franken sweater out of all like you know the Christmas sweaters. I don't make anything. I can go goodwill if I need in an extra sweater. I don't think it's a good idea to go into debt for really anything. I know that some of it's really not avoidable in in this day and age right like I mean I try to avoid debt like I just paid cash for a used car. I've never owned a new car. Ever I have financed danced couple of vehicles. They've always been used vehicles. But only I I take my finances very seriously so I only financed you know a very low payment. That was within my budget where I felt that you know whatever my income was I was going to be able to maintain for the duration of time to three years generally speaking So there's a bit of responsibility ability to has to go along with it so you know I'm not willing to say you know folks should not go into debt for holiday gift giving but it's a good idea Diana to it's a really good idea to continue to keep this in mind when you're out there. Buying gifts is that I remember when I used it when I was in high school I bought a lot of gifts for people for some reason. I thought it was a great idea to give gifts to everybody but I usually came up with the budget. And what I'm saying is as if you're going to go into debt this holiday season look at that list again and cut those budgets and see if you can make something something on your own. I recommend food. Because we've all got mouths. I maybe there's more vegans now than You know I don't live that way. You Make Fudge for me. I'm happy right right but but I'm really kind of concerned with this article where I say. Let's say holiday loans or personal loans ranging from five hundred to five thousand with with short repayment terms of a few months to a year. They require no collateral and often come with high fees and interest rates so Eight percent to fourteen percent. I wouldn't call that high when some twenty three but sounds like payday loans are in there too right. Well A payday. If you payday loans you really need to rethink your life. I mean okay so the concern. Is these loans. Give consumers a false sense of financial security making them feel like they're in better shape than they actually are and could lead to taking on more debt. And it's pretty obvious. When you are shelling out cash that your spending more more than you would otherwise and the financial system is wacky too? So for example I have been responsible I have avoided a debt as much as possible. Like I said I had a few You know used car loans. You know that kind of thing but I avoid credit cards that kind of thing and then I went to try and qualify for a home loan right because you know I'm I'm at a point in my life I you know I've I haven't bought a house. I should think about that right. I'd like to retire. There's that I resigned. And it turns out that I suffer from something called underutilisation and let's say that my credit is fair to Midland. But nobody will give me alone alone. Because I don't have any active lines of credit so I literally would have to go into debt more to establish some small lines of credit to show that I've have utilized credit. That's available it ordered to qualify to buy it. which is the most ridiculous thing I've been told as I understand it? You need to go online fine and Google sort of the term that you talked about their the credit problem and that there's some solutions that are sort of less costly there are and I've looked into them but man it's ridiculous Nicholas and I've got a another big statistic here about consumer eight five five four five zero three seven three three. It's eight hundred seven one four eighteen to better plans dot net and look at it This this news story story here where they're talking about one in three Americans taking out. This sort of holiday consumer loan not critic not going into debt on credit carts I'm presuming alone of some sort. I'm presuming that knocks us up to Probably two thirds of Americans go into debt for the holiday season this year. But I wanna read read some of these stats in here. We've been talking about better ways to do this. And if you need some ideas there's always archives dot freetalklive dot com. You can always get the show and and listen but I mean it says one in six consumers so they say what in threes go into debt but one in six consumers is still paying hang off last year's holiday debt on their credit cards after racking up seven hundred and forty five dollars in outstanding balances on average so not even done paying off. Last year's Christmas GonNa go into more debt. This Christmas smart yet. Outstanding debt is likely to increase this holiday season as average spending forecasted to hit one thousand forty seven dollars. That's a huge. Oh this I see that's what their debt was. I'm sorry it's a four percent increase from last year and a twenty five percent rise from the in the last decade according to the national retail. Federation so I mean who knows how much people will go into debt over this holiday season average. But I'm just GONNA say look the average American can't put their hands on one thousand dollars right and if you're one of those people this is how you now ladies and gentlemen if you're one of those people you need to keep the spending down to something something manageable and manageable. I mean don't go into debt on it and I'm speaking as a guy who buys almost no Christmas gifts. I make agreements with people. Look I don't really want anything for this Christmas that way. I don't have to do any shopping and you don't have to do any shopping. Let's just agree to like each other. Yeah come on over for a party. They'll be cocoa and an beers and we can do these sorts of things and then trump pie right all those things. The holidays often come with high expectations which can be detrimental title. Six in ten people. Feel the pressure to overspend this during the season. I must be one of those four in ten and I don't Know Oh i. It's been a long time since I had any consideration that I felt like I had to buy a gift for somebody so I just say make agreements that you don't but they recommend setting limits rather than buying presents. You can't afford talk to family members about price limits or gift exchange see. You don't have to purchase the entire family gifts. There's the sort of round robin things I don't know what they're called Santa's and I was just thinking that a really good holiday gift. If you find yourself in a position where are you. Have you know some wealth to spread around. You WanNa spread some holiday. Cheer help other people pay off their debt. How about that it? Yeah so they gotTa White Elephant Gift Exchange Secret. Santa's I've heard of all these things. I'm not They also recommend selling items so this is a good time of year a cell unwanted items since many shoppers buy us gifts on Ebay and craigslist. Boswell said if you have items you no longer use you can use the proceeds the sale to buy gifts this year. I'm done with the recycling thing like you know. There are plenty of used products out there that other people have had and didn't use and they're just as good as brand new and there's as you know if you are feeling like giving a gift. There's no reason to not consider that before you consider buying something new right and they say plan ahead You you got to set a budget know what you're going to spend in gifts and spend what you're going to spend in gifts write it down. Write down who. You're going to buy things for four. Write down how much you're GONNA do and figure out where the money's coming from and don't let it be debt. Is My recommendation here. If I I mean that's that's it. I going to take a firm stand that debts. A bad idea around the holiday season one in six Americans still carrying the debt from last last year. That's insane just to think about that. You haven't paid off here. It is you know December first week of December. Whatever it is and folks haven't uneven paid off what they bought last year? Well it's insane it that that's our society. I mean like the information. That's coming from retailers Taylor's and the Federal Reserve and the government and all that stuff is spend spend spend spend spend spirit what you have now right go into debt is their their motto. It seems I mean the the federal government has never not been in debt true and so I mean what kind of example are they setting. Where'd you learn it from other different lodging you? That's exactly right. This is your brain on debt. That same philosophy about like the the shooter's tres. Right the mass murderers or whatever is that you know where to folks learn that. It's okay to do some sort of a mass killing well from the government. Of course. Yeah I don't know I mean I don't think that too many of them look up wounded knee or whatever it is and and say well you know. This is the government's During this these mass ask killings I mean certainly we have a society based on violence. But I kind of feel like that's inevitable with humans. I like to put in people's hands concrete concrete things that they can do to make their lives better and it's was I'm happy to talk about the theoretical stuff but there's only so much you can do. You can choose to be a total pacifist in your life. And how does it change the world. Well maybe a little. Maybe somebody says Oh. That's a good idea. And they try it for a little while while or whatever it is but I don't feel like it well circling back to the to the thing though and I guess the point I was trying to get at with the buying a home and having to having having to go into debt to gain a somebody who will then be enough money. That's like okay. I've been responsible gone out of my way but I'm being punished. I I can't get the same kind of alone that somebody else can get because I haven't utilized my credit and that is a ridiculous thing like I I mean you can ask any of my you know my landlords. You know that kind of thing. I do have credit references. They'll give me a stellar reference. But it's just because I haven't utilized credit in a number of years leaders that it doesn't show up and so therefore I don't even get like if I had horrible credit. I would get consideration before I get consideration for just like not not being in debt which is ridiculous. It's it's a backward system agreed this assistant based on going into debt or playing around with debt because credit cards are their game. They're a little game Russian roulette. Now I don't know how many bullets in the chamber and I don't know how many chambers there are but I know that the idea the is is that well you know I just can't pay. It's not convenient to pay this off this next this month. So I'm GonNa let it ride till next month which of course then it's twice what it was and there you are here in the cycle and you've paid interest on it and whatever savings you got it. You ooh I'm out of here and I don't recommend that as a way to get a hold but every once in a while you run across somebody in life who needs a good seal seal later alligator i. If if you didn't like the front of me you shrink elect the back of me goodbye. Yeah I've had that feeling before where you all it's panic mode and I've vowed never to get that way again I'll splurge sometimes stuff you know. I like to buy things things and I love the holidays. And everything but cash is King Mandal getting the debt for a toy or present or anything. I I am cousin getting married and had a very modest wedding you know they. It was very low key and you go. Somebody's other weddings man getting debt. So these things and it's like an extravagant thousand dollars forty thousand dollars. I've heard these numbers and I. It's stunning to me. I mean these are down payments for houses and somebody's somebody's paying paying this for a party. I mean hot. What kind of expectations have we upset in our young people? If this is what's happening my wife and I I had to had to pay for her parents paid for the catering which by the way was awful But we we had to do our own wedding and we did it at a church and we managed to do it for under a thousand dollars most of that was the PSA premium be. It can be he just nice and just for special you know a wedding or something like that on a low budget. You know you don't need you. Don't need to be Mardi gras man. I mean you're getting in debt for thirty forty forty thousand dollars for a five six hour. Yes it's ridiculous. I can understand on on one level that particularly from like the female perspective in a wedding. That you know. I used to play in heavy metal bands and I've been on stage in front of a packed house. You know. I know what it feels like to be a Rockstar for a day for a few hours and I get that from the female perspective. The wedding is built up in their minds to be the sort of like. It's my day to be a Rockstar. All right and so they literally WanNa sacrifice everything to feel like that Rockstar for that day. Because that's probably the closest most folks are going to get to like being an actual Rockstar Star on stage and having that feeling so from that perspective. I understand the sentiment but I also find it ridiculous to spend that kind of money on just the event itself when you would be far better off planning for the rest of your life using that money in a completely different way. Yeah you you know. If you WANNA spend on the money you know have a nice honeymoon or Or put the money for a down payment on a house or something something smart but you know people will. I don't I've never understood people getting debt for like Christmas and stuff like that and it just I don't know I guess I'm cheat while well I mean or smart call cheap if if if you want that's but I'm not in debt and I you know I went to a Christian school. I didn't learn a heck of a lot there but one thing I learned was that the borrowers the servant of the Lindor. And that's true because I intend to pay back all the debts that I take now. Yeah sure there's people out there you lend money to and it's gone like the wind and that's one of the reasons I don't really loan money to darn often because I I don't WanNa find out which one of my friends are worth loan money to and which ones aren't muscle real thumb. Never lend more than you're willing to lose while they. Yeah I mean I have found friends that I'm like okay alone some money and because I'm sure I'm going to get it back and you know but for me the feeling of loss worse than the loss. I just don't want that feeling if it's a friend or somebody family member and you you're Kinda like you doubt. Uh they'll probably ever bags if you can afford to lose it. Here's a gift you know you just I mean that's just the way I look at it. You know now. There are people that you can trust because you know you know their work ethic or whatever but yeah it's sad that mankind. Ah I don't give you never know when another recession coming. You know you never know. Next week I keep hearing next year. Who knows you knows what's going to happen from statistically statistically you know the value of the US dollar the Federal Reserve Note Is never going to become worth more. Show it's only going to go down as we continue to see these quantitative easing type of tactics and that's another aspect that Was it's probably worth mentioning. Here's his win the credit card companies or I should shorten that to banks because that's what they are when banks loan money. They're not loaning their money their loaning a portion of their money. Because you need like nine one two nine ratio of deposits for You know Loans so when they're loaning money they're loaning you twelve cents on the dollar. There's no real risk for them and the loan and then you know they build all that stuff in and so when you make alone. You're boning real dollars. You earned every one of those thousand dollars you're loaning out and if you're gonNA alone at six percent to a friend then and you know the real inflation is something like two or three percent shadow. Inflation they say is is six seventy eight percent so you're losing money anyway by doing these loans and then you're dealing with a situation where the friends not gonNA pay back. I'm just saying Dan don't go into debt. This holiday season this is my recommendation. Learn the lessons of the great recession and live your life like this. Because that's what I've decided to. Ah Give yourself that gift this holiday season. Yeah and that's what you relatives and friends want for you anyway. They'd rather you be economically free. He then to give some twenty dollar gift. Might you be talking about the article with the headline. Maybe abolishing America's police force isn't as crazy he is. It sounds right now. What I'm hoping for from this article is somebody who's taken some time to do some research and really come up with some great eight ideas on what it would be like? The world would be like with abolishing the police force. I hope I'm not hearing some screaming. Black Blocker stripling scrawling stuff on the Internet between Molotov Tov cocktail tosses. Should we find out the ALLISTON. Let's go to the article. This is from underground reporter Dot Org are police. It's necessary although this existential question often produces a knee jerk. Of course they are. Who would protect us? That's well my my thought is similar to this. Is that basically basically no matter what we need a protection force of some sort whether it's hired by a neighborhood or you know hired heard by an individual. I mean there are people out there that higher protection forces for themselves. You and I agree on that My problem with the polices. Of course they're funded by the state they're based in violence and if you don't like the service that they provide you can't do anything about it so my thought on police is actually a little different than it is on most government programs and I think that most government programs you can attack based on their funding and certainly it is true. True that behind schools police are the largest cost for a community. I obviously some communities. It's different but you know what I see the little communities out there. They're spending money on schools and then Copson that goes down from there. Firefighters tend to be a little ways down but honestly as a firefighter air fighter. I'm going to tell you that there would probably be some efficiencies introduced to the marketplace firefighters were more market oriented this maybe maybe your fire department servicing thirty five hundred people in rural wherever doesn't need a ladder truck right. Maybe it doesn't maybe I don't know how many three story buildings are there in town. Maybe I mean we'd all be better off. With some fire extinguishers in the kitchen right and I'm adamant what about that by the way but you know whatever as far as police go a lot of times. They're so first off when it comes to traffic nick stops. This is one of the things that people like cops for this. Is that when that guy who went by is driving like a maniac. Okay I get it well. Part of driving like a maniac is going over the speed limit and we have technology now which is speed cameras that can handle the dispensing of tickets for people going Over the limit and it doesn't include distracting lights on the side of the road. It doesn't include half of the police deaths per year up to half of the police. Deaths per year can be getting knocked into a ditch. Because they're standing in a A. You know walking the road or standing the road of this this whole policy of pulling people over on the side of the road sometimes on bridges. It's crazy to me but it's part of the job is dangerous and the lights are there. I mean ask any emergency worker. How many the people have been in rex right next to the wreck that you're dealing with I was in one and then another one happened while folks were helping me out of my car are who pulled over to? Let's be a rubber neckers now. They just can't help themselves but the lights through their designed to distract people but would you believe a growing call for for the abolition of police and working examples to back it up deserves more than a scornful dismissal. Particularly amid epidemic level violence by agents agents of the state police are under no obligation to protect the public. They putatively serve a series of state Supreme Court decision stretching back more than three. Three decades indisputably establishes this fact so the lingering question who will protect us is of no consequence to the case for dismissing every police as departments in the nation right so police departments. I don't actually have a responsibility for protecting. By the way I was I was making the point that funding isn't the way I'd go after police departments. What I'd say is that police individually and as a unit should be responsible for their actions? Yes and I don't mean taxpayers. I mean police right. Yes right if you if you are. I don't know you get into some altercation. Location with a an officer of the law and he bangs over the head with his baton. And you sue for police brutality or something along those and it's seen by jury Correa's is and you win that case The money you win does not come from the police officer. Who beat you over the head with a baton? It in fact comes comes from the tax payers so the taxpayers lose no matter what right and that to me is the problem and if police departments and police officers were responsible for their actions actions. I don't think this is a radical notion. I'm not trying to say that we should get disband all police. I'm simply saying that officers should be responsible for their actions just like every other person out there is responsible for their actions. Make police responsible for. There's too well we know that Police Kill Maim. Intimidate harass generally brutalized the citizenry with alarming frequency. I think this guy might have a an extra credit and aimed rarely face consequences beyond a paid vacation. In the case are szekely termed administrative leave for doing so rather than sometimes they get their jobs jobs back years later with all the pay reinstated or they. They'll get fired. From whatever department they worked at and then they resurface six months later. Bet some other town down in working at their department at the same rate of pay if not more you know and you're right. They're not held responsible rather than fight and solve violent crimes police act. There's little more than heavily militarized code enforcers or is David Graeber of the London. School of Economics aptly terms bureaucrats with weapons. I like fundraisers. Fundraisers armed fundraisers. Because I mean you know cops know they've got quotas now they may not call them quotas. This is You know they've got other code terms for for it but I mean if you're a city a municipality and you've got a police department and that line item costs money and you've got to find you you know maybe it's supposed to generate. Maybe the police department supposed to generate money. Because they're one of the few out there that can send bills and those bills have to be paid eight or else and you know. I don't know what a COP makes. In a given day it depends on the department. Some of its thirty thousand dollars a year. Some of its one hundred and really just depends but yeah they can lay out tickets to cover their daily cost. So these weaponized fundraisers are are protecting us from all sorts of things like broken tail lights missing front license plates and imperfect lane changes more often than from robbery homicide end rape far more often. My favorite is the weaving inside your own lane hocus. You're saying I was in my lane. I got a I got into an accident. I hit some black ice flipped. Hot Truck Shoot Guy and yeah. I almost died. Yes you did. And that was actually my first attempt to move to New Hampshire about five years ago so but you know Phoenix I rose once again and here I am but I got a ticket for driving with my wheels is off the roadway so the car flipped on the black ice and they decided to give you a ticket so in in a market situation. Whoever provided the road I might be able to hold responsible for not keeping the road under appropriate driving conditions or not closing the road if conditions were inappropriate but but because it was a state funded roadway as many of them are? I was not able to do so. And in fact I had to pay for the privilege of of driving on the roadway which was not suitable for driving upon addition to having been taxed for it so they made some money off of you losing control on their poorly maintained road. It's an awesome deal. I had a situation once where The town I was living in day They sent me in. I was involved in a situation. Where a dog with a dog call a dog had gotten out and killed a bunch of chickens over at a friend's house at a neighbor's house? Okay and the a police officer ends up there and writes a ticket to the guy who got out but I mean it's not like the guy who's chickens got killed is going to get anything anything that you get a ticket to. No no no no. Don't tickets for him but he's didn't he's not GonNa get any money either. No chicken tickets tickets. I get it eight five five four five zero zero three seven three three. Hey you're free to call in and talk about whatever you WanNa talk about. That's what we do here on Free Talk Live. It's mark with you and the captain now. We're reading an article here about where you know somebody who's done a little bit of research is suggesting that quite possibly we could live without the particular government service of policing now. I'm of the opinion that I'm fine with this. What I call the what we as it's been called the nightwatchman government you know cops courts roads military that kind of thing? I get it but I'm also open to somebody talking about well. Do we have to continue to do things things the way that we've always done them. And if it's not if people aren't they're out there thinking about those things were always going to do the same things we've always done and and that's not desirable. Yeah we need innovation where they're currently isn't any also speaking about innovation i. There's great crypto currency. Wallet that I love. It's called the edge wallet and they are very innovative named after you know but Paul we play who designed it awesome is team designed. It did mention to me right away that they were you know when they still had it in Beta that. Hey I knew wallace called the edge wallet and I'm GonNa want you to endorse it and I that's great. Honestly it's more important that IAN endorses it. Because he knows what he's talking about and when Ian says a crypto currency wallet is a great cryptocurrency Wallet and he's willing to endorse it. That says so much more than if I'm willing to endorse because it has my You know the names of the same as the same as mine. Sure Yeah but Yeah I mean I think the really the greatest part about it is the username and password. Part pretty cool. You could do your whole cryptocurrency life with a username and password and all you gotta do is start at edge dot APP. Secure your freedom go to edge DOT APP so please go on with this this article captain. Certainly the article goes on to say a bunch of things that we've covered on this show previously Like you know the police have been involved in this shooting that shooting in that sort of thing and yeah we. The citizenry are not nails to be forcibly and violently cougars to the submission mission over the tiniest of nonviolent inconsequential infraction. And I would say this. Is that one thing that it's probably worth people. Understanding branding is that every disobedience is potentially a death sentence so let's say you're driving along and you've got a tail light out now the in all likelihood everything's going to be fine and you're going to get home if you're not stopped by a cop but if you decide I'm I'm not pulling over for this person. This stranger with funny lights on their car. Yup then well pretty soon. The you know the nail strips come out Out and they're you know doing these moves to knock your car out of Control and you could certainly die. They'll pull weapons on you. Sometimes the trigger gets pulled when the weapons pulled and look. I'm I'm not advocating for running from the cops and I'm not saying why are they killing the people running from cops but understand that every infraction is a potential deficits. And that's the thing you need to understand. This is where all held at the point of gun to every law that's passed violation Misdemeanor Felony. It doesn't matter what they are. You better do as you're told or you'RE GONNA die. Yeah the every life is just words on a piece of paper with a gun on hiding behind it right right and a Lotta Times by the way with these high speed chases they could just take down the The the license plate in the car and then pick them up later and there are countries around the world mostly in Western countries where the cops haven't haven't shot anybody. I think there was one statistic that the police in America have shot more people than the cops have in London since one thousand nine hundred in Great Britain since nineteen sixty or something like that this this is just coming off the top of my head but it gave you some idea and that was just that year and the p the cops in Iceland of shot one person one time and boy. Oh boy did he. Deserved Servant. Read that story but they which was funeral to and surely they have high speed chases there. I'm just saying too. Many of our cops have probably seen the dixie hazard and don't call me Shirley so the article goes on our police unnecessary elements in an ordered peaceful society in short. The answer is no oh absolutely not largely because police spent such little time policing anything other than ridiculous. Laws created solely for the purpose of revenue generation to justify their own existence. Well so then. What if police forces were just pared down to handle those kinds of crimes again? I've said that I think that probably I believe that mostly reckless driving includes speeding and speeding can be handled through automation. At this point that you know maybe you need cops for red light running or or something but they do have red light cameras. I don't think that I don't like the way they've been used by municipalities. In fact I find them to be deadly. But I'm just saying that if this is your excuse for keeping cops darned expensive and completely unreliable so how do you get the cops themselves to unjustified by themselves are they aren't going to. I mean the firefighters aren't going to do it either so to within his is sort of the problem right and the people are going to go ask. What are you cops? Cops think about this well. They're your servants. Not The other way around when we learned recently too that through things like Revenue Generation and civil asset that forefeiture that organizations like the police or other law enforcement organizations now actually rob people more of more value than actual robbers do so as an organization type. Yeah right you know. That's that's a pretty big statement and it's not going away away anytime soon. Let's go to the phones. They've Dave calling in from Colorado Dave. You're on free talk live. You're on free talk live. That's not all is well pretty good all right I had a question about the. Irs and taxes are all. Do my best. I'm no attorney which is important to say. Hey well I figured you'll probably would know a little bit more about this than how would My Dad is disabled. He just got to say whatever this past year and He Does the irs about two thousand dollars They're threatening you know you like Of course cease his assets assets and stuff like that just can't pay them I live with my father. Does that mean that they can take my property. Well this is one of those things that That sort of you I would say yes they probably can take your property and then determine whether or not you know it was yours later because what are we talking about here. We're talking about gold bars or are we talking about a car. We're talking about the land. You live on arms so I would think those might be a problem because you would have to sort of prove that they're yours and not. Everybody can do that that with firearms minds you so what I would do is I'd get a hold of the. Irs and see if he can come to some kind of terms with these people people because often they'll they'll put together payment plans and take into consideration that somebody's disabled. You can show proof that that's the case and that kind of thing but yeah I'd be concerned learned about firearms there. Well you see My Dad actually is on a playmate payment plan with them but he's for disability. He hasn't gotten it yet. Okay this has been an ongoing process. takes years I'm not paying paying for his It was his mess up. They got you know him into this. Oh I really don't WanNa pay that my other question wasn't going to be cryptocurrency if you like are buying and selling it online and you're using that entirely as the money like if someone gives me. Bitcoin and I use that Bitcoin to buy a product addict and so that product for Bitcoin. Is there any like tax liability on that at all or is it Something completely different. That is a question for our one. Time host Melanie who was a tax attorney but I I would say I can tell you that like there's some vague notion of a law that may apply to the asset classes. They call it now now. But generally speaking if you conduct your transactions in crypto currency and they remain within cryptocurrency. And there's no record of it reported to any government agency generally yourself. You're just itching on yourself in that okay. So generally speaking if if all your transactions remained in will crypto land You are typically not going to be harassed by the man for any tax liability now. I did have a situation where I used to work. I was the general manager of a Radio Station Down Sarasota Florida and we had an arrangement with a a a barter organization so we would exchange radio ads for these coupons for other things that people had traded in so restaurants script was pretty common one and we use the restaurant script to take people out to lunch and hopefully seldom some radio ads and you know gives bonus to bonuses to employees in that kind of thing and we had to claim that in some manner. I wasn't the Accountant. I was the general all managers but we had to report and claim that in some way and I don't exactly know how it appeared on the taxes but I can tell you that we we considered you could buy an ad for five dollars a Holler but when we traded into the barter company. They were ten dollars so we doubled the cost but So I would say yes. Probably that a strict reading of the rules would probably say that. Yes you owe something. But you know if you're dealing what if effectively is Internet cash than the up to you what you want to report the other thing I just want to mention quickly is generally speaking when people get into Any kind of an issue with crypto currency is when they try and turn it into the United States dollar right. The Federal Reserve serve notes cash as most people know it. That's generally where the problems begin to happen When you when you WanNa you know look I've got you know? One hundred bucks in Crypto crypto-currency. Now I want that hundred bucks in cash. How do I make that happen? And one hundred bucks is a very low number. I think They they look at accounts that do transactions actions like over three thousand dollars something along that sort of a line for those organizations that do that kind of thing so that's generally where the problems come in is when you're trying to turn it into the Federal Reserve note so if you stay within the crypto sphere generally speaking your transactions go unnoticed. All right thanks so much real star by. Let's go to the we have the amp only call in line which is on the discord channel and I haven't screened the call but it's an answer so he'll relatively safe. It's GONNA dissident calling in from the Internet dissident your talk live. What's on your mind? Their yards insert certain dissident and came. Where if I pick one calling in about You were mentioned roads and you know number one question. The contract Libertarian Marotta. It's always the roads without the government. Who would build the roads Ma? Probably the people who build the roads already because government doesn't I think I want to start a band called Ma. Mu Age well. I was actually reading a couple of weeks back essay by a guy I think. You know. doctor Dr Roderick Long on the air. Yeah and he was talking about has very good essay and it was talking about a public. The property in a An Arctic Free Market World Free Market Society and He made several interesting cases in description description about public Public poverty and all of them were centered around. Okay sticking to see how this would work for roads and his coworkers for some other cases and I the other cases that little more tenuous but You know for roads. It's it's pretty obvious that you know private roads to exist. There's a reason to have a private road. you farms in lots of places in private Communities in h always have private roads and that's beneficial but yeah no public roads with public access have their own set of benefits that kind of incentivize themselves in their building and maintaining in plus roads certified by people like You occupy anyone one part of the road for a very brief amount of time if you're moving on and if you're not moving on at your obviously yeah yeah yeah and and you know. So there's an incentive to build roads because if you have a any sort of Homestead our business activity generally want People to be able to access it other than just yourself and then to maintain it and everything and it should only self incentivizing so I don't see You know how argument really makes a whole lot of sense. What the argument that That roads we need the government for roads. Yeah Yeah it's WHO's making that argument has spent a lot of time thinking about roads and if maybe they are asking that question to get some and ideas on how could roads exist and be maintained in the absence of the state and I have some ideas too. Live is so if if you like that. We ask for the support of five dollars a month at a. m. p. amp dot freetalklive dot com. GonNa Bring dissident back on here so we were talking about roads in the possibilities disabilities of ways to fund them. And I'm curious of some of these ways that it was roderick long. Who wrote this article? Yeah that he might have been talking about. But I've got some mightiest too so first off. The government isn't one organization by any stretch of the imagination umbrella organization over an umbrella over an umbrella umbrella over an umbrella over an umbrella. More an organization. Type right yeah. And most towns could spin off their department department of transportation relatively easily and then the department of Transportation could potentially just go about raising funds in some manner other than what they do. Now I think roads are the single best argument that like Dass tax is a pretty good argument for voluntary the funding. And here's the reason. In many towns you can find fuel that is not taxed recreational fuel for farm arm equipment and a variety of things. You can buy fuel that's not taxed so if you choose to buy taxed fuel and support the running on the roads and then the chances are good that you won't get caught but if you wanted to you could go to get the REC field. PUT IT in some fuel containers and then you you know. Fill up your vehicle at the house and nobody would ever know so. There is an argument that this is a voluntary situation that you're paying for fuel. Taxes is voluntarily but perhaps the DOT would get a little more inventive if they had to do their own thing. And here's one of the things I think they they do first off. People businesses are constantly looking for advertisements on the side of the road. So billboards secondly if billboards are a a good idea then what about sponsoring section of road. Maybe you get to paint whatever you want in it. Maybe that whole section of Roads Blue Says Walmart when they already have the the the adopt a highway program right for the littering you know. And they're like Oh such and such enterprises sponsored the next five miles of road to keep it clean the it's a modified version version of that to pay for the actual road. Yeah it's a tiny tiny sign but it is good at advertising. Notice it again you modify it to be bigger and you know better and more respond. Whatever your whatever your your audience your clientele wants to have than those of the things you oughta start looking at spending The auditor offering as far as dot. Gus and so then there you go. Every stretcher road in America covered by or at least the large percentage of by the retailers. Who Want you to use the road to drive to their Business Home Depot Walmart target? All these places it'd be a huge boon and as you mentioned mark you know the the reason that we don't see stuff like this and you're going to mention a bunch of ideas and I imagine this is going to mention some ideas as well. I believe that. In the absence of government we would see a variety of methods for funding these things and we can't see any of them now because because obviously the state won't just get out of the way and let it happen descendant. What were some of the ideas Well first of all it would be it would definitely could be a variety. That's the the free market really is more of a variety of ways. We're GONNA nizing society than than just a way of using cash in an unlimited a number ways But you know more of a general way is like Anyone who has a Has Business this or homer our talent or anything really automatically. It's going to benefit from now only roads but by public use of the road the not heavily not heavily restricting the roads and not You know putting Road Pirates on the road shake people down. I don't think that would be people very happy nor do I think it'd be it'd be very a good have like a main street side. Each section of sidewalk is the private property of each person. You have to have their prom. You have to have their permission to Set for section missile. Lock in front of each business and obviously pretty absurd so you know. I think that the roads might not be super consistent or super And you know there might be some standardization on but you might find very interesting looking roads. But I think that people are going to have the incentive to come together to fund the roads in a variety of ways because it's gonNA benefit people accessing their town in them accessing other places them getting to other roads boots so. I don't think it's going to be really difficult to find themselves. Find ways to to fund this without having necessarily to generate a profit fit for it. Because you know really to generate a profit you have to control access and people aren't gonNA use your road to come to your town in. You're just GONNA lose out. Yeah inroads being funded by Townsley all kinds of inefficiencies. There's a town here in southwestern New Hampshire where three people are serviced by three three quarters of a million dollar bridge. The bridge is probably worth more than their houses combined. But the people of that the town must now maintain this bridge because at some point or another somebody knew somebody who got a bridge. Put up over there now. Well the bridges there and and it's absolutely ridiculous who should pay for that bridge. Those three people should pay for it. Or you know the figure some other way A to drive around. It's ridiculous. Most of these up many roads are basically just glorified communal driveways and they should be handled by the communities You know that that that they service I think when you're subsidizing them then living there you're subsidizing. The way they get around right. I think one of the most overlooked overlooked ideas for how roads would be funded in the absence of states. Status Government already exists and that is as the example of the Internet right often referred to or used to be As the information superhighway right. So how do you get on the Internet. How how do you pay for the Internet? How do you drive around on the information superhighway you have something called an ISP Internet service providers? They pay something to keep the whole. So I imagine imagine I imagine something called an RSP a road service provider that models its business model after the ISP is where you have an organization that is is responsible for maintaining quote the fiber unquote in our case the asphalt right And then you pay them a subscription fee and you you have roaming charges when you go out of your home area like like cell phone plan would be or something along those lines are hot spot that you carry with you Some sort of a token that says hey I subscribe to you know Bob's RSP. And so. Therefore I can drive on these roads and what I like to do is I like like to make these solutions that seem a little more palatable to especially the bureaucrats many times people will say well. What about the cops firefighters the road guys whomever's displaced by this particular particular Funding model well. I say give the the roads to the Department of transportation in any given town. Let them continue to do it and then they'll either be successful or fail and if they fail then it's an asset for the company it'll be liquidated in order to pay off the debts or whatever the situation might Mike Sue you're talking about all of the employees of said dot in a given area. Okay now it's your organization you guys figure stockholders and I say that with schools rules so you know people are like oh the teachers will see. I think the teachers are great. Let's give him a school and let's see how they do. They already have eighty five percent of the students going there. They've already got a building all they have to do. I'm willing to listen. So captain kick ass. You're reading sadness. Please continue so jumping ahead of you. Know kind of like the crimes of the police responsible. There's no doubt that You know the police. Some police officers are responsible for committing crimes than Sort of as a whole the organization here in the United States seems to kill a lot more people than a dozen other countries stories around the world that are comparable. And you know you can say what you want to say about that. Some people defend it and say police lives matter other. People are like this as a holy outrageous and whatever the case may be but there is no doubt that that organization is funded through taxes. And it's really difficult to make the argument. Taxation is theft. There are some ways to do that argument and I'd be curious as to what's your thoughts on taxation. Being Theft is eight hundred eight fifty fifty five. Excuse me eight five five four five zero three seven three three but let's go about the talking about what would happen in the absence of this idea. So in the absence of policing Justice Prison and criminal code reform several viable options present themselves for consideration perhaps most imperatively among them the complete abolishment abolishment of police to posit the populace would devolve into chaos violence without police. Departments ignores the chaos and violence wrought by police not to mention the very real historical proof a correctly and fully functioning society can and will police itself. There's a link to some other article here. I'm not going to go there. fritter away. I'll I'll point out that I've I'm very familiar with several municipalities simply. Don't really have policing and and mostly it's people who have guns in their houses blow your heads off and the reason that You don't see a lot of crime. I consider the sizable bill financial feedback loop perpetuated by excessively intrusive nanny state and its armed agents of enforcement taxpayers shoulder the cost of disproportionately large police forces verses which crack down on petty criminals instead of preventing murders rapes and significant property crimes. which would be very difficult to do? Yes and I don't really think it's honestly. The responsibility of police is not what we hire them for. We hire them as a cleanup crew for when we need them. And then the taxpayers fund the Overburden Public Public Defenders and the Backlog Courts Prisons Probation Officers legislators in their efforts to criminalize yet more ridiculously innocuous but behaviors. And let's not forget that far fewer far fewer than one percent of cases go to a jury trial yes which means that somehow our system some has devolved into this sort of rubber stamp. You did it We're going to offer you this and whatever it's it's basically plea bargaining and that's not what justices that's not. What did you learn about in civics class? This work around for justice and it's never ending it's unsustainable and it's not going to fix itself not in waste significant enough to warrant further discussion Asian as of two thousand eleven according to a two thousand thirteen study by the association dean. Or I'm sorry the Associate Dean Dean of Eastern Kentucky University School of Justice Studies Victor e. Kappler I'm not familiar with this guy. A mere two of fourteen arrests were for violent violent or property crimes if police truly existed to fight actual crime not the overwhelmingly excessive number of crow quote crimes created by lawmakers departments. Arguments would be slashed in staff dramatically. Right I mean it a lot of cases you would only need a skeleton crew to you handle most situations. I mean there's some times when you got extended syndicate over to tell the college kids to settle down with your party or whatever I mean. I'm I'm not saying that there's not a need for security a matter of fact when we started this. I said there's a need for security but I also think that what they're saying here is true. Is this by and large. That police are being used for sort of made up crimes and Kappler rights. There's a code here from him if we take all all. The violent crimes reported to the police in two thousand eleven. We find that there were one million two hundred and three thousand five hundred sixty four violent crimes since more than eight eight hundred eighty. Five thousand people worked as sworn officers in that same year. There were one point. Three six violent crimes reported for every police officer employed in the US if one basically one crime one violent crime for every cop in America correct. That's a lot of cops to handle an a year right. Yes in this one year so we need one cop to handle one point three violent crimes because at one point four will round up one point four violent crimes per year that seems wasteful. It is very wasteful. If crime were dispersed evenly across the nation's police earliest than this would mean that in two thousand eleven each police officer would have been responsible for investing just over a single violent crime and since we know that a relatively small number of criminals are responsible for the vast majority of crime in a society. Each comp would be responsible for even fewer criminals. Yes that's true after the hotly controversial deaths by a police of Michael Brown Eric Garner twenty fourteen. The call for police reform MM intensified exponentially. We know this we covered on three talkline. Yeah we I'd say that the Baruch got a cop comes out of that if you call that a win You know now. Now the nope now the The government agencies have more cameras to use facial recognition and watch you with yeah and while undoubtedly well intentioned in motive votive years of begging nicely for the broken system to fix itself have as to be expected. Fallen on deaf ears abolishing police entirely light many times times. which dealing with is police officers? Police unions lawyers that represent police instead of addressing some of the issues. That are out there. And there's lots of issues that people have legitimate shit emmett issues against the police. All they do is if you call a crack addict like I mean. Just they just just cry. I mean like you want to have a reasonable conversation. If somebody in my life was like this they wouldn't be in my life anymore. Right if every time I I wanted to bring up a legitimate critique of the behavior of somebody who's in my life be that family your friend or whatever they just blew up like who. What do you think it'd be like without me? I don't get the hell out right. Let me find out. Don't don't bring that crap to me because I mean at this point. I don't know what it it would be like without police officers because I'm being forced to fund them at the pain of losing my house. Don't act like we'd be worse off without you. y'All are stealing your money to get it and then you're talking about and talking about receiving stolen merchandise is a crime what you call your paycheck taxations theft homeboy. And you have no so you don't have the option. To opt out. Abolishing police entirely might reek of radicalism to a nation cowed by constant government. Fear propaganda but considering how little violence is present in our current society. And that's I mean I've read other articles on this that it gets less and less every year every year. It's just continued decade. I should say probably years ago. Up in doubt but compared to just decades ago examples alternate can take credit for that. I don't know I mean there's no way to tell but I can. I suppose we can see areas. That are not terribly well. Policed in America Howard. How violent crime doing they're yeah Generally I mean much lower than you know. Generally the lower the population the less crime. You're going to see and I also think it's reasonably fair to say that over time we would probably have about twenty percent of the people in prison that we currently do. Obviously some of them would need to You know die in prison and stuff like that you get out or whatever. The situation is but over time. If you legalize drug crimes you legalized gambling prostitution a toossion and all these other vice crimes. The ones that don't have a victim Well you I mean what are the cops doing. Who would they be putting in jail right? Yeah they wouldn't have anybody to put in a jail at about fifty percent of people in jails right. Our in for non-violent drug crimes at some of them would probably commit crimes to ah you know while they were drugged up you know there's always the PCP pick up a picking up a car in the parking lot of McDonald's and Swat and people with it or whatever the hell you hear a bunch of them are just possession though right right he was holding onto a plant eight five five four five zero three seven three three free talk live. I think you're right right and people read bumper stickers. You've moved forward and traffic just to read somebody's bumper sticker it's liberty stickers dot com. And and you go over there and support him liberty stickers dot com going on with this article about basically what would it be like if we disbanded disbanded police departments right And we've talked about a few things but the article continues with A a nice thought and we kind of touched on this during the break trained in unarmed armed intervention teams consisting of civilians often former violent offenders themselves can and do defuse potentially violent conflicts in their neighborhoods neighborhoods in major cities from Los Angeles to Detroit as noted by rolling stone indeed conflict resolution as a community program has effectively prevented criminal. Mental activity improved neighbourhood relations reduced gang violence and resolved without the involvement of police or courts crimes. which have already occurred? So there's already these organizations who are teaching nonviolent dispute resolution. That have nothing to do with it. I mean what do you know of any police officers. That are running around around teaching folks nonviolent dispute resolution. I don't I don't imagine that there are very many but probably a F- A small handful this what I would say about that is I I. I don't think that every problem can be solved by non violent dispute resolution. But I think some Ken and I think that the percentage of crimes that can be solved by it are pro is probably much much higher than the percentage that is currently being solved by it. Yeah I think this is something that needs to be instituted and tried when you you have somebody who's just continues to deny their actual behavior. Then you've got a problem secondarily. You have a problem problem when you presume that somebody is guilty. Who is making a denial so You know one nice thing about the criminal. Justice system is whether it's it's accurate or not. There's a guilty party when they're done or there or the you know the CR- charges go away so I think that one one of the ways probably around nonviolence crimes is is. I'm sorry number. Nonviolent is dispute resolution to keep denying that you did it in the first three three rules of criminal defense denied deny deny. And this is what the defense attorney told me once. That was a good joke and well I mean is it a joke I guess so going on in just one anecdotal example. This euchre offered to the Chicago reader. Recently there was a robbery at the store in the community. One of the people at the store who stuff was taken said. Look I don't WanNa call the COPS. Is there anything we can do. They found found on facebook that this young person was selling their stuff and that young person happened to go to a school where we'd done some circles. They're talking about recipes. Resolution circles feels so I knew a teacher at the school and could say. Hey this is where we're at eventually the robber and the rubbed brought together in an attempt to resolve the wrongdoing. Yeah I'd love of this. The young person ended up returning what he had that hadn't been sold And then working at the shop in restitution for everything else. Then it turned out he really liked working there and after this agreement was over he continued to go there and volunteer. There was a relationship building built their That relationship among community munity members can act as a compelling deterrent against crime. The better the less likely to Robert victimize them I think yeah. It's building relationships. Asian ships and people. There are people that were robbed their family. But you know yeah fewer. I wanted to ask you because I heard this term when I was there. It's called the land of entrapment. Can't because you know. The land of its land of enchantment is their actual but the locals called the land of entrapment and because there are more people in in New Mexico prisons and jails that are not from New Mexico than any other state in the union. Now some of this has to do with the fact that you know New Mexico's a big desert. So they put up these buildings to house prisoners from other states. But I was told and I don't know if this is true. Maybe you can enlighten me. That New Mexico is infamous for arresting and detaining people who drive without New Mexico plates from other states. And that kind of thing. Is there any truth any that you. You may know more than I do since you read something that I haven't read anything on it but but to be honest actually a living here. The better one knows a neighbor the less likely they are to rob or victimize them make sense. This cannot be said of police lease in two thousand sixteen as officers often. Don't live in the neighborhoods. They police which creates a degree of separation and personal investment from the ultimate outcome of any interaction decreasing the hesitation to act violently in an encounter that wouldn't ordinarily call for the use of force so the summary is that you know the better you know your community and you're involved in it the less likely you are to like react with violence as a police officer also the more you impunity. You have for your actions. Um You know the the the fewer the consequences reactions the more likely you are to act like a jerk. I had a situation where I was going through the The TSA ASA line. I had an expired driver's license because I figured this is a photo. Id that's torrential sexual assault for those who don't know the acronym TSA Say Thousand Standing Around is what it looks like to me. The and so I had this expire drivers and I'm like well. This is a finite photo ID. I'll just go through well the TSA. He does not like that. That you have an expired driver's I'm like I'm not going to drive your little metal detector. I'm just here to prove this is just a proof who I am the bombers I who blew up the nine eleven buildings had expired drivers. Are you calling me a terrorist Sir and literally. These people surrounded me with dog over an expired driver's license to touch me and one of the cops at some point point in the exchange. Said you got a problem and I just may be realized in that moment. This is a Londonderry. Police officer assertive cop not a TSA agent and it just made me realize a moment this. This guy has no interest in de escalating. The situation right like I'm getting what I considered considered poor customer service from poorly paid bureaucrats who would otherwise be sitting around on the government Dole. And they're doing the only job that they can do and and this cop comes in to defend them and you know. I'm the taxpayer here. I'm the one paying. None of this stuff is relevant. A- all to this guy and why should it be. There's no reason at all. It should be relevant to him. Yeah he can like him saying that you've got a problem. Might eight reveal that I am a violent guy because I might slug him right in the face right and if I did then then he feels completely justified. See saying thank. You could a problem like a school yard bully just reveals a violent person right right instead of you know. Maybe a person reacts to I. I don't know with the way a schoolyard. Bollywood ry Somebody might be react to a schoolyard. Bullying slugs him but it in no way. Does that say. Hey I'm here to assist I in de escalating the situation. Now I in no who you got a problem. I mean that's if anything it's asking for the situation to escalate further right and you know so you have one organization whose job is to make sure that You know no terrorists. Get on the plane with weapons and to make sure that all the water bottles bottles were thrown away and then you have this other organization that's supposed to be there to I don't know sort of maintain order surrounding this Silly little operation. That um you know people from other countries come here. And they're like yeah. Yeah the fact that it doesn't the anything like the PSA doesn't exist outside of the United States. It should be a enough evidence for most people to go. Oh well that's completely unnecessary. But you're mentioning the driver's license thing I had Not Klay dissimilar experience but just relating to driver's licensing like I don't think licensing should expire like once you get it should just be valid. Yeah what is the point in renewing a driver's license plates. Why do they expire? I don't understand. Do they bad after a year or two or four or whatever it is it really seems silly in I moved here recently from the Seattle Washington area where it's pseudo legal to purchase recreational marijuana. They have stores you walking by it. You do have to produce ide- not much like you do when you go to a bar for cocktails and oddly enough UNBEKNOWNST to me my driver's license had expired I'd been into this store several hundred times. It was three blocks from my apartment and I presented ideas. I do I was talking to the Gal behind the counter. Who knows me by my first name and you know my my legal first name and all that kind of thing and not a lot of people do? It's not something I advertise. You have to show. Oh you're so yeah you know. So that goes on and she she says Oh. I'm sorry I can't sell anything to you today. And I thought she was like. Oh very funny funny. I'll have one of these. She's like no no. I'm serious. I'm like WHOA. How come your driver's licenses expired? So now you can't Eh. She even though she knows how old you are knows who you are Ed. But you can't buy because the driver's licenses expired wrecked silly. They have some sort of you. You know thing written into the law that they could get their licensed to sell the marijuana revoked if they sell to somebody. Who's driver's licenses expired? Now as I understand it the Arizona driver's license is good from the time you're eighteen to the time you're sixty five. I don't know how they go about putting a new picture on there. I don't have any answers for that right That's I think the best argument for a new driver's licenses as well. I gained some weight or lost some weight or whatever the the argument is and interestingly in Montana if your vehicle I believe is over for ten and a half years old. You don't have to get a new play to renew sticker for it's just at that point it could forever until it stops running in Washington Washington. If your car is twenty five years or older you can get what they call collector's plates or antique plates. And then you don't have to take like the emissions test anymore and you don't have to pay for that plate every month or year. Excuse me you have to keep a sticker on it that says the current year. But you don't and have to do all the other costs associated with it so well in Montana. You don't have to do anything once. It's ten and a half years old so if you get a driver's license from Arizona and a the plate from Montana that you've eliminated all these problems and but somehow all these other jurisdictions have to have all this stuff up to date and that just lets you know what this is. There's a racket. Oh yeah this is just more taxation because in Florida may register a car is like I duNNo. It's gone up but it was. It used is to be twenty five dollars a year and I think it's like sixty dollars a year. Now but in New Hampshire it depends on the value of the car. So if you buy a brand new Lamborghini you're GONNA pay significantly more than somebody who's driving around an old beer right right. I know that License plates are pretty ridiculous. I did a little bit of reading on it to where there's nothing that a vehicle identification number You you can't suffice in place of a license plate for a car and you don't have to renew that every year right outside is basically this is a vehicle identification number presumably they needed for individual states. So that you know Will it started with like horse and Buggies Shirker freetalklive eight five five four four five zero three seven three three Dui this whole taxation apparatus. That's a great name. I I think the police could learn to be more like those private groups and start you know. Somehow it probably is going to take another hundred years but actually learned to be more like keepers of the peace and not go in. You know all macho. Just be nice people. I don't know how that's GonNa ever worked out but it would be great if it worked that way on the pod stores though more importantly Now I also so live in Washington and There's a few shops that I know they know when they're not they're not check your id but they also know when it's okay when everybody in there is is regular and school to not Jack But that's rare but now another shop. I go to the employees probably in seven days. It's a week from eight. Am Til midnight or eleven eleven pm. Let's hours probably forty employees and when they get caught not checking that Eddie or letting you in with a hole punched in it. Everybody's out of a job for two weeks so I really respect them and don't give them any gossip. Mike because you always get caught short like dry d somewhere you know. This is not one of those things that people it affects a lot of people. Besides me this is what the government does is they turn everybody into a little deputy an unpaid deputy for them right. So when you've got that kid who's twenty twenty years old selling beer at the grocery store that he can't buy You know he's checking your I. D. because he can't tell the difference between somebody who's his age and somebody is old enough to be his dad. I guess whatever the situation is I mean I understand why they're doing it. They're doing it because their jobs on the line. They're doing it because they're told to do it. But it's kind of the ridiculousness of the whole thing. You know here. In in Europe you know no problem buying some alcohol and let your kid drink at home and or with meals or anything like that here in the United States my God you're GonNa corrupt them. It's just amazing. The hubris of I've These these politicians and I wanted to say about the Washington Massari the recreational marijuana in Seattle proper. It is far more strict right and far more tight than outside of like if you get into even ever it's like you know their stores were less The same they were able to sort of have some personality about it. That kind of thing so the further you get from you know the downtown area Sort of the more personable. It seems to be but it still doesn't that that is that is very true. That is very true. I anyway went through CEO of my. I just don't I just don't mind getting my driver's license commute every five years. I guess I know what you mean. I understand the whole control. I personally don't mind it and I certainly would never want to staff to be affected because you know they let me in. That's all thanks very much. Thanks Mike I went to recently Seattle like last year about this time. Seattle and Denver within a couple of weeks of each other. And I don't remember ever seeing a pot shop in Seattle but but in Denver I saw them all over the place so You know if there's a competition going on between Seattle and Denver Seattle's losing well. Seattle doesn't allow. Wow them to advertise in the same way. They let other industries advertise. I say what they did is they didn't let the industry just sort of grow. They dictated how the industry was going always always do that. They did with alcohol. I mean look. There's there's beer distributors didn't do it with technology. The Internet came along and they. They weren't like okay. This is how we're going to allow the advertise. It's because it wasn't outlawed. I watch what happens with political memes though I mean now with this new election. That's coming around. You're GonNa have to answer all kinds of questions if you're going to start some organization that's GonNa put out means or whatever I mean so once. They get their finger. They'll nose under the tent. Then they move on the whole all camel in Yup Yup. Yeah it's it's a matter of fact is what it is in the Moore's will continue right. I'm a veteran of the memoirs. Are you I well. The Democrats lost this go around and they're pretty bitter about it. Everybody's got to pay the just the fact that like some government entity is upset Chet and tracking memes. I mean that doesn't the ridiculousness of the entity known as the government doesn't doesn't illustrate what they think about you. So Russia made memes and they swayed your vote which is to say your such a mind. mind-numbed Mir Madan that the few pictures with a words on it has suddenly changed your mind. I mean I it's the rare army M- that's changed my mind on anything I can tell you that I can't. I can't think of one but if I make a meme it just gets ignored and people call me crazy the and you know that kind of thing so like what's the difference here you know how come how come you take facebook. Yeah apparently my memes. Don't change minds but like some kid in Russia makes me M- that Oh you've affected the entire election process. Yeah that's right. Well this is it right. It's twenty twenty. The elections is upon us. It's coming down the pike and I mean you know we're less than less than a month away from twenty twenty and I. I didn't think it was going to be true but but it looks like people are going to still be using facebook in two thousand twenty. I I don't know how this happened. But I've seen more commercials for that that I I don't WanNa do me any favors but that Tom Steiner Guy Yeah I. I don't know how he gets advertised to me as much as I'm so sick of that guy he's pumping the money in. He did a commercial Marshall where he talks about how few women are in Congress and the Senate and minorities minorities. He's a white guy so this old white guy who somehow can achieve changed that. I'm like it's hilarious term limits. That's his that's his campaign. I don't think but I I find it ridiculous. That here's a guy talking about. How few minorities orgies and women are involved in the political process so he wants to vote for the old white guy? I don't understand how that makes sense. Anybody don't either I- I've baffled by it. It's it frankly insulting you know that. Hey here's your hot button issue of gender or the race of somebody and I I don't fit any of that but I'm GonNa fix it and I think he's right though. I think that the the term limits would help on something like that. I'm for term limits. I don't think it's the biggest solution the world but I'll take it about. Let's limit their terms two zero all politicians. Your term is now zero. You run on an election you get elected let you run a campaign you get elected and poof. It's over I think we'd probably be better off with randomly selecting people to do these jobs that we are. Oh Yeah Yeah I think we should like. I mean they're the least qualified people. You're right and like really good leaders. They don't want to rule you anyway and they don't want to tell you what to do right in a lead by example. If they're a good leader shirt you know so. I hate when people call politicians older. The leaders are no. They're not they're anything Butler liars and thieves is what they are and somehow we believe we cannot do without these liars and thieves. And if that's the case that's fine but let's come up with a better system for picking these liars and thieves because the the Democrats out there. Let's get the money out of politics. I've looked at the proposals. And there's really no proposal that I can find for actually getting money out of politics. You know they're talking about let's overturn citizens united. Well that all that means is means is is that I want the unions to be able to donate to campaigns but I don't want the corporations to be able to donate to campaigns paints. Well that's not a viable solution. That's just one side showing how they're going to win. Look the Republicans know how to win. They gerrymander back doc. I'm sorry you're solutions have not been as successful as theirs but the whole thing. We're all getting screwed on it. And how do people decide that a popularity. The contest was the way to to pick leaders. Right like the idea that somebody who's successful at running a presidential campaign somehow makes them qualified for the the highest office in the world is ridiculous absolutely ridiculous insane. It's called confessions of an agent an details. The career of Lacson is various Elliot activities in a more than twenty hours of interviews Lux described the payments that he made the players as well as other events in his career. He includes names of thirty former college college football players who are alleged to have taken money or some other extra benefit in violation of. NCWA rules when you hear me. Read that type of introduction. How do you feel about what I said about you? Well with all due respect to you I think there's been some misinformation to begin with I'm I'm not an ex ex- NFL agent or former NFL agent. I'm currently still Certified by the Players Association I was not be certified I was simply suspended and then I was reinstated after I served my one year suspension. Just a few years ago so I thought that was the one thing that comes to mind And the other thing was that that The things that I was doing back then. We're not against the law. Granted they were against the rules. Were against the NC two as rules but the loss that we got in place currently does not exist. What's what's the difference Josh? Well you know one is against the law. One is against the rules. That doesn't mean that at the root breaking taking the rules is right. I certainly not since his suggesting that up breaking the NCAA rules is the is is necessarily okay. But I think there is the distinction that can be made There's a line that that even though you or some other people they have a certain idea who I am. And how I operate made myself very transparent I'm not interested in breaking laws. They've never had them. But I'm okay with breaking rules if it gives me a competitive advantage and and that's how it was back then I grew a change. I went through life experiences and realized that I didn't want to participate activity anymore so for the second decade of my career. I did it the right way and I was able to sign players. who were not taking so you know I may have done these things early on to kick start a career respekt ten years doing it And I had some success along the way and I had some failures but I also did it the right way and I know that it can be done the right way as well. I'm I'm always interested in why somebody does something not just what they do. And I'm just wondering whether the rationale of a young josh locks was that everybody else is doing it in the business business. So if I'm going to be able to be competitive I've got to do it as well. What did I have to offer these guys? I walk up I have no clients have no track record. I have no college degree. I just bang on the door and say hi. I'm well meaning. What can I do to help you? And that's essentially it and and I went out there and I I I. I did what I had to do to try to get my foot in the door and industry and You know people will disagree with that. Approach And now as a as somebody who's is twice that age over forty years old having lost two parents having gone through getting married. You didn't having young children myself now. I see the world a different way and So I hope that answers your question. Why did you decide to go public josh? Because I I quite frankly I was hardly wronged. I know you know. It's really much more personal than just saying I want to Change College football. You know so if at the end of the day some good comes of this and there's dialogue and it helps people then great. That's that's really that's really wonderful. Because is the bottom line. Is that these. Jim Daughters are coming to the point. Where they're sitting the Internet and googling their dad and I had a dispute with another agent who light work with him he USED THE NFL PA zed procedures As advanced as a weapon in a civil proceeding and for whatever reason I was suspended over fifty three hundred dollar. Check that a client of mine. If given to me that was placed in a lawyer's custody during during that civil disputes. So I can accept being called a lot of things if people want to say I cheated. People WanNa say I paid all these players broke rules rule breaker. I'm I'm all those things but I'm not a thief. How would you characterize the business of representing college athletes today? How categorize business not categorize it? How would you characterize it a characterize? I'm sorry I'm GonNa have this little background noise here. How what I characterize it well It's it's business filled with people that are that are trying to do it. The right way and some very aggressive people who are willing to do anything to get where they WANNA go You've got the miles brand Put it best you know. When looking at the landscape of College College football he said in two thousand six and then addressed to the association he said Amateur refers to the participants. And Not the Enterprise Josh. So when you really look at those words you realize that everybody's being transparent here and unfortunately you've got the you've got some kids who were kind of caught in the middle. If you take a look at what urban Meyer had to say about agents. What other coaches have had to say about agents? What percentage of them than you think Josh are doing it the right way and how many what percentage are doing it the wrong way then? I can only talk about what I've done. And what I run into and I I know it's prevalent to put a percentage on it I guess the meeting and I I don't WanNa guesstimate. You know the the the one reason why this story got I told and got printed was because They vet at the article They contacted people. They verified things so you know. I don't WanNA start guesstimate. Automating or guessing. Now but clearly the prevalence. The reason why I say that Josh is I've been in this business for a long time. I know owners I know agents. They're all my friends and you know I mean you are somebody that's been in that business you know what's happening out there in the field you've got to compete against these guys as well. I get the feeling from having talked Everybody it's a little bit like baseball. Steroid issue everybody is kind of burying their heads in the sand about it and whatever number they give you if it's on the low side it certainly isn't anywhere close to the truth. Well I I. I can't necessarily disagree with you. I think that Up until right now or up until recently really. There are a lot of people who wanted to think that these things don't happen. Or they think that maybe the Reggie Bush thing was a one shot deal and and that's not indicative of the current environment but You know that's why I think the timing of of of this article was so it was so important It shows that it's it's pretty widespread and that it's it's not just Reggie Bush and You know he's one of many so it's not realizing is out of the barn on this issue. I mean to the point that it's not going to ever be anything different than you can't clean this thing up Josh not entirely. You're always GONNA have. You're always gonNA have some filth here there no matter what you do but th- a great first step is dialogue and more than this more than just me talking about it more than me just coming clean for the public and letting everybody know how things really work. more importantly it's the dialogue between the NC two A. The the NFL Players Association and active communication with the individual states that have laws on the books and they could felony to violate them. The second that the state step up and actually prosecute and actually follow through when they have evidence against somebody that's a great deterrent and if the NFL PA and the NC into a And more so the NFL PA because the NC two A. doesn't police agents more so the NFL pa.. If they're willing to to get off their rear ends and actually do some basic investigation. A lot of stuff is easy to find. These agents are sloppy nowadays. They're not doing it the way that it used to get done. Which I think is one of the main reasons reasons why you're seeing a lot more of it today? Josh one of the key moments in all of this discussion is one thousand nine hundred ninety nine. NFL PA rule change. Tell everybody how that changed. Changed the landscape of this well in the late nineties the NFL Players Association decided and in their infinite wisdom that it would be a great idea to tell these players that if if they accepted money from an agent more so they were telling the agents. If you give money to a player who's participating in amateur sports and NCAA member They're not required to pay you back. And you no longer have ability to go out and litigated this dispute civilly you need to come to our arbitration and Procedures where you'RE GONNA you're GonNa hear about you violating the NFL PA rules so you're going to have to admit it. So all of a sudden and it became very clear to players to their parents to their cousins and hangers on. Hey let's just take money from these guys all we can and we don't have to pay it back when you take a look at that rule change. How did that affect you personally? Well that was simultaneous With With a number of other things that had happened Oh personally and professionally clearly and I said this earlier when you go through was your parents at a young age it impacts you greatly When you within a year of that Less than that. Find out that your hopes and your dreams representing of being associated with somebody Quality Prospect like a Ryan Leaf on the heels of a year where you have at the top quarterback in the draft that year before Your dreams are shattered You look around and you reassess and you say okay. What am I doing wrong and now what can I do right? What can I do better so All of that happened simultaneously family nineties and that was a turning point for me and it was a turning point in the industry I think is well. I got better in the industry got worse. Very candid and very articulate. Inciteful April comments from Josh locks. Why said former agent he's still an agent NFL agent? He's part of that article. Boehner Josh Lux's joined us on sports. byline you may want to check out the article in SL. It's called confessions of an agent. And that agent is Josh Locks. Who is with US Josh? I was touched by the line and I wonder if you expand on it a little bit I will never forget the first time I paid a player. Yeah I I won't it's it's It's IT'S A it's it's embedded in my mind You have to go through Do a little soul searching and You know working for the raiders The impression I had of of the sports industry of professional football in and of itself was changed going from being a naive sixteen year old You know admiring Marcus Allen and Brick Townsend taught Christianson idolized and and and enjoying the time with my father at the Raider Games. You know looking up to these guys watching them winning their commitment to excellent. Tonight I get there to training camp and I find line that I have a peek behind the curtain and these players aren't all who I thought they were not necessarily You know perfect far from from it So very very early on. I realized that that that you know there's public persona. And then there's these people really are and and it was shocking shocking for me and it was a bit of poultry. Shocker for me but Again I hope that answers your question. I know I ran off a little bit there but I hope that I answered your question specifically you know what I was asking about and it was before the nineteen ninety season. It was University of Colorado linebacker cannabis. McGee can you talk a little bit about that situation wasted because you talk about it in the article. Oh Canadians Mickey. That was the first time I paid a player and again I went there and and and and pretty naive. What's behind behind here so to speak and I have a flight thinking I really have a chance to land a player? A good player. I I just had counted agree to sign with me and I'm a twenty year old all kids. So he's he's a big time player. So heck why wouldn't KANEDA's consider name. I wait for him and ended up rushing them there at the door and comes on over and we have a conversation and within the body of that conversation he lets me know that You know he's having a bit of a problem and you need some financial assistance and and I ask you some soul searching I had to I had to weigh and measure is something I wanted to do or something. I didn't want to do and when push came to shove for a number of reasons I decided decided to go to the bank and pull out some money and help them out and And I got burned and it wasn't the first time and I was the first time but it wasn't the last time that I was burned And eventually I found myself a a partner who how to do that and taught me the ropes took me under his length and showed me the best way. The most efficient way to to handle that and that was dock was it not that was the lake has got arrested so so yeah and and in the story you talk about the doctrine if there was a player that was driving a database in Everybody pretty much knew that. Forget about it. You weren't going to get close is to that player right. And what was the reason for that. Well obviously you know agents have Contacts at different car dealerships and back in the day you know doc was uh Datsun dealerships. So you know that was set. You know it's true but it was set as much ingest it was. I was trying to inject some levity but it's also accurate and other agents had told me that very same thing that when they when they pull up and they would see Datsun. Two Eighty Z.. they knew that they were too wait and I. I thought that that was funny. For whatever reason I guess I had a sense of humor and And so there it is. Yeah the other one that I thought was really funny for those people out there. Josh got starting intern with Bud for Rillo at KABC am down in Los Angeles and but he asked a you know what could be done to help him out and helped hook him. Up with the raiders. When they were down in Los Angeles and for three seasons during the summer he became a ball boy and one of those players that you were excited to meet was Greg Townsend? But you tell a great story about Greg and what he asked you to do. Can you repeat that please. Then you gotta realize something here. I'm a young on kid and and I'm I'm I'm admiring these players in the middle of the night I get a phone call and it's correct town and you know I don't I don't WanNA use the exact words it's because we're on the radio But basically hey come to my room I need to talk to you now. You know. Yes a little freaked out absolutely Louis. die like that. 'cause you was room you have no idea what to expect. And he swings the door open now. He's wearing a smoking jacket. He's holding some brand magnier. He's gotTa got a Salem and I'm looking at them and I'm wondering what am I walking into here. It's a little bit odd. It's a scary situation. Calls me and he sits me down and and then proceeds to tell me that he has a drug test. The next day he made the mistake of smoking some weed and asked me if I did drugs and I didn't and mend Asked me to go ahead and fill the bottle for him and let me tell you something. There's a lot of pressure filling this bottle a lot of pressure for sixteen year old. I have drink a gallon of water before I could go ahead and give them enough that he thought he was satisfied. But I could see. It's it's it's the real world and These things do happen and and it's it's something that both of us look back on now and we laugh about it. The other story that I liked as well as the one you told about trying to get Jonathan Ogden as a client of course Jonathan Jonathan. Just a great ball player and he was a big Janet Jackson. Fan was not. Yeah and I don't blame him. 'cause that woman is fine and You know the the the pipeline. Is that a girlfriend of mine. Had Gotten some tickets. I don't know if it was for my birthday. But it was for some reason and she had given me the tickets and I wonder if she thought that I'd be taking her with those tickets and instead I decided to make it an opportunity to connect with With Jonathan Ogden. Now I don't know if any of you have ever gone to the forum which which which no longer It has the LAKER games or anything like that. The seats are close together. And he's a big man and I'm six three and I'm a big guy too and the two of us together together was a little bit uncomfortable but what I remember most about that concert. The aunt Janet Jackson and all of her outfit changes with him standing up at six foot nine and screaming like a sixteen fifteen year old girl. I could not believe the sounds enthusiasm came from Jonathan Ogden. Only away me forever every age. Josh is certainly looking for that Wale and you talk about the one that you wanted to have got away from you. You're already alluded to it. It was Ryan Leaf and he was in some financial trouble with credit cards and everything. Pick up the story story from there and tell everybody what happened your relationship with Ryan. I got very close to Ryan much like I did to some other players and and Ryan needed some financial helping agreed to just to help them out and get it implemented monthly. Because that's the way I was taught was the most efficient way the best way to do it and and Ryan and come to Los Angeles and we hung out. We had a great time together. We really we really did He was very much looking forward to a trip that we had planned to. She Watch Vegas like half a sue and on the way back. Actually it's not mentioned. We even stopped through offline so Birth out by the time we got offline but we had some fun Ryan had met my dad when he was in Los Angeles and my father was very upset that I wasn't really recruiting too much. Because he had been ill and my mother had been ill prior to that where she passed and Ryan. It basically told him. Don't worry about it. Doctor Walks you know your your son has me. He doesn't need to worry about anything else. And at the end the day we go there to Vegas just a few months. After my father passes away it was difficult time. I probably in hindsight I should have canceled the trip or at least I should go ahead and paid for the other guys that he got along with them because they turned on me it turned on me quick and they turned on me hard and it was uncomfortable. When I didn't pay for those other guys but I was fed up I was I was in a bad outweigh and I was frustrated and I didn't handle it right and blue and at the end of the day you know the whole thing up next up but the the real heartbreak was that I turned on the television after the Rose Bowl and there was Ryan leaf standing there with we? Steinberg was one of the great disappointments in my career and change the way that I didn't business just shortly after after after I got burned by our chase our when you take a look at what ultimately happened to Ryan Leaf. You're close enough to him. And I remember having a discussion down at the Super Super Bowl with a general manager who was considering possibly drafting him and I said I'd be careful because I had seen him down at the Super Bowl and he had been out partying partying and drinking and everything else. Are you ultimately happy that maybe you did not represent him. I'm going to be real candid with you After losing my parents if I had the good fortune of representing Ryan lease I would've made that I would've made that my fulltime job that period and I would have been there with him every step of the way and I would have moved down to San Diego and I would've. I would've thought I believe I would've taken really good care of them and shielded fielded him and hopefully got him going the right direction as best I could and I'm not making myself out to be a saint. I had a great time to and I did plenty of wrongs but I I I hope that I might have been able to influence. If he had selected me. One thing that he did do ultimately was that he kind of paid you back in a sense did he. Not Yes he did. I I saw the charter facility. I have some other players. They're talking I and he handed me Cash to repay that loan and we're looking in the eyes wouldn't tell me why it went down the way it did but in my heart I knew why and I just accept the money and we went our separate separate ways and have thought about. I haven't I haven't talked to him since I haven't heard from him since he responded to this article. Thanks Josh I status Josh locks. NFL agent and he is the subject of the SL. He struggled during the second one Probably had a heat exhaustion that I practice the second practice that first day and then the next morning he went all out again again in the morning practice and unfortunately I'm had an exertion heatstroke Very unfortunately he was not cooled rapidly. Onsite and eventually succumbed To the the side effects of the exertion he showed the organ damage and ended up. Passing away The next day From that heatstroke So that was two thousand one. I assisted his widow and his agent Through many legal pursuits in the years after the NFL. Commissioner Goodell and his widow Kelsey stringer book to find Some kind of lasting legacy for Corey. They reached out to us at the University of Connecticut to see if we'd like to host the Chrysler Institute at Uconn And in two thousand ten we opened our doors and have been very fortunate to be able to have such a big impact with athletes warfighters riders and laborers and. I'm working really hard to try to keep them safer. You know when I took a look at your story are. HBO's story on Heat Stroke. I was surprised at the ignorance. And I'm just wondering. Why are people ignorant particularly sports organizations as it showed in that story about this issue? Yeah that's extremely frustrating waiting for us as well I it's just a real long educational path for people And there's two big components need to think about one is. How do you prevent a heat stroke from happening sitting in the first place And that would be things like heat acclimatization which is phasing in. I'm practices over time because almost all strokes happened in the first three days of practice. So let's let's let's go a little easier on the first week of practice and then make it harder Another thing would be measuring the environmental conditions and modifying the work to rest ratio on really extreme days. Because we all. I think that most teachers jokes happen on extreme weather days so those are two examples of prevention but then if each stroke does occur. Are we ready to recognize it quickly. and Are we ready to. I'm treated and we know. The scientific evidence clearly shows that if you can get someone into a cold water immersion tub within ten minutes of collapse and get their temperature pitcher under one of four within thirty minutes. survivability as one hundred percent so we're working with people around the country to try to make sure they have athletic trainers owners out there high schools for their sports programs. They can recognize this quickly And they can have a cold water. Immersion tubs and obviously established policies that the cooling can continue on site until the cooling is done in the emergency and venue transport them to the hospital. You don't stop the cooling while that While it's while it's occurring just to get them to the hospital we call it cool. I transport second. I'm so there's there's just these are examples of some of the policies. We're working on right now. Of course during institute is in the midst of visiting all fifty-one states including leading the district Columbia Try to enhance health and safety policies over a five year stretch. We're GONNA have a policy meeting in every single state To try to specifically Likley adopt somebody strategies because you know there are a lot of states that have requirements for cold water immersion tubs and heat acclimatization and environmental monitoring and and other things outside the landscape of heat stroke like things like cardiac issues are having a dis emergency action plans. Doug let me just emphasize for the listeners around the country and around the world in this piece in an angered me and I'm sure it angered an awful lot of people this immersion tub. Tell everybody how much it would cost to have an immersion tub right by the playing field right in the locker room. How much would that be so a very good one Like at a tractor supply depot. One hundred dollars Max. One hundred and fifty eighty dollars and they're like indestructible. They could last at least ten years at a high school. So the cost per year it's completely negligible when you factor in. They're paying for seven coaches and athletic fields and all the maintenance of the fields and all the equipment and the officiating in the travel. I mean we. We don't spend a little tiny bit of money that You know to keep deep our athletes safe and also when you think about it as far as what you know alive. 'cause only worth a certain amount of money apparently because they're not willing to pay that one hundred a hundred and fifty dollars for this. What is the reasoning that you all are hearing as to why? They aren't doing it so I would say it's multiple different reasons we got. That's just some of it's just sheer ignorance. Some people don't realize that you can basically guarantee survival from a heat stroke if you get temperature down rapidly that's one second We do hear from State High School Athletic Association's The governing bodies in each state for high school sports that they don't want to mandate You know the school having to buy the TUB which we we don't believe that at all we we think that's just complete nonsense because they mandate that there has to be a certain number of officials that each team that you know the the length of each team and all these other policies so we we do believe that they could you know mandate schools also having health and safety policies. They're a good example is the state of Florida. which wasn't that? Hbo Piece That you're talking about a few weeks ago and their executive director you know Just couldn't really seriously address that issue. I mean Florida has more heat stroke. That's in high school football. Since two thousand ten than any other state in America and they still refuse to mandate they recommend but if you use to mandate cold water immersion tubs. Football fought practices limited. Just a high school or youth football or do you find the same problem exists at the college level. Now Thankfully I. I would say almost just every college sports program American House immersing tubs there thankfully they all have outlet of trainers that can help oversee the proper care. But as you know Michael Jordan McNair okay. So the University of Maryland last year That even at the biggest level of sports you you still have. People not implement best practices to take care of an athlete and prevent them from dying. But we You know but the high school is that we have made a lot of progress. But I don't WanNa be only negative. I mean we. We have found in our last latest research study that we're over sixty percent of high school sports programs in America. Now have immersing tubs available. I'm we're talking back in two thousand ten. That number was the only about a third. I'm so the we're making progress. We obviously just wanted to happen. Faster but One of the big issues making sure. There's an athletic trainer which is a licensed medical a professional Making sure every high school sports program has an athletic trainer. And we're at about seventy percent have access to an athletic trainer right now Maybe not working as much as we'd want to to but at least they're thinking about the importance of the athletic trainer. One of the numbers as far as you. Yes from football and playing in the search circumstances and you've been talking about bound sports You know with this. Probably in the Ballpark of thirty to forty deaths per year from all causes and I mentioned all causes on purpose because not having good policies for exercising the heat increases risk of cardiac death a lot obviously increases risk apiece stroke death increases risk of something called exertions circling. I'm which is another common caused deaths So there's there's other issues that the heat exacerbates the rest when you don't have good policies in place to keep people safe in the heat. There are multiple medical conditions that can result. And we're we're talking with Dr Doug Doug Casa and Doug is the CEO. The korey Stringer Institute a professor in the Department of Kinesiology Allergy at the University of Connecticut and he was featured in the story by HBO Real Sports about the deaths associated to heat stroke. I think most people know especially if they live back East East. What the weather is like in the summertime even into the fall heat wise and also humidity wise Tell me a little bit about what parents who have kids involved loved in football or any exertion sport can do a really good point to raise so if any parent in America the first thing they should it ever do is when they're dropping. The kid off at the school is asking. Does my school having athletic trainer Because we don't want coaches you know being the person that's going to dictate if their kid lives or dies when we're talking about cardiac issues headed serious head injuries heatstroke fickling and other things like that decision that is made in the first ten eh going to dictate if the athlete lives or dies. So we we have to have the licensed medical professional there so that'd be the first thing I'd tell parents make sure they're high. School has an outlet of trainer there During these you know these really intense August practices that we're talking about obviously all year things can happen but August especially from a perspective And then second I would you know. We'll see where where they fall in line. I would have to the questions to website. And look at their state and see where their state are related to policies Because we evaluate every post every single states policies and you tap on what policies. Your state has Your individual highschool could have the policies in place they don't have to wait for the state to mandate it but it'll give parents it's an idea of what best practices are what's recommended And then you know you got a sense of like what level of education or the coaches have other coaches prioritizing health and safety issues The the parents have to be proactive. The parents of the most important advocates. If we're going to see changes locally and at at the state level I mentioned that you're involved with the prevention of sudden death in in sports and One of that part part of that is wearable technologies. I'm interested where are we technologically. So we still have a little ways to go The the one of the things that were most hopeful for Is having some kind of wearable technology that can accurately assess core body temperature so You know my dream is is that an athletic trainer is going to be on the sideline with an IPAD and know the body temperatures. Have all the athletes while they're practicing We have some really high technologies. That are very expensive at that can be done right now. But they're not cost feasible For High School Setting But so so that's kind of the holy grail items in In kind of sports medicine. Listen that we know we can keep them safe if we can track their temperature during practice and and once they got to a higher level you know you know give them a longer rest break or out for a little while so that they don't get to the point of each drug you know. I think I don't know how old you are but I think you probably remember that picture of the marathoner coming into the Olympic Olympic Stadium. I'll take him as in Los Angeles that was just struggling and everything over and over again. that to me is probably the one image. I have deals with heat. Yeah so that was Gabriel andersen-scheiss She was a big marathon runner in nineteen eighty four Los Angeles Olympics and yes she was deaf. Thanks for coming on to a heat stroke on that final lap. Medical people should have intervened and not let her continue Because that obviously could have caused more problems and and it delayed her care. You're what challenges you the most dug when it comes to this subject how I think that the struggle the biggest struggle for us is that you know policies at the high school level Happen on a state by state basis. There's no national governing body that can institute these rules and the state by state level the state high school athletic. Association's are athletic administrators. They're not medical people so the medical health and safety standards in our country for high school athletes for the eight million high school athletes. Lights there are dictated and developed by non medical people so that's the biggest frustration for us now. Most states have sports medicine. Advisory Committees made up physicians and athletic trainers is that kind of advise these administrators for the best policies but ultimately the vote comes down to the administrators and they get to decide on what the health and safety policies are for our children. What was the reaction to the? Hbo Story About What You had to say. In it I got a lot of really good feedback from people and it was a great way of highlighting our struggles sales because the the executive director of the Florida High School Athletic Association. You know Was Very hesitant on trying to encourage these kinds of best practice policies and that's the frustration. You know that we have and We're we're having a lot of success and so I don't want that to be the image that people have that that that's But it gives you an idea got some of the struggles that we face. Doug you've been in this business for a long time and as you've already talked about. The korey stringer situation in this one. That was on H. B. O.. Are you hopeful that maybe in another five to ten years that we may have a better handle on this issue because this is a big issue when it comes particularly to youth sports in my opinion I do believe I believe so I I think in the last five years we've made more progress than the previous twenty five years combined so I I think we're on a good part of the curve right now but Your show so here and other things like that it just help get the word out because we just we need the ignorance to go away. We need to make sure everyone understands that. And then we need to find solutions to whatever problems. uh-huh people are facing that are holding them back from making these policies. We've got about thirty seconds left but I have found in all the years in sports that this usually happens more at the youth youth level or the young athlete level than any almost any other where it went place in sports. Do you find it the same way. I no question. Because it's such variability right in the the level of the athlete and the people who are supervising them We've we've seen some really good progress at the NFL and you know at the NCAA. And and many of the high schools across America State High School Athletic Association's Georgia and New Jersey and others have really made some great progress and I think that momentum is carrying on to other states right. Now Doug I I WanNa thank you this Forum and Sports Byline is always there for you. If something new comes down the road let me know and come on and talk about it because I wanted to parents and I want people associated with sports boards to know about this issue and try to prevent those desk.
