A daily podcast of about the exploration of space science in tech. I'm your host will Walden in this episode. We're going to be talking about titan, NASA. We'll be sending a helicopter to take. It's a drone it kind of looks like ones that you can buy in the commercial space. So drones that we have here on earth. I'm going to look like the one that's going to be on titan. This drone. We'll be launching in the thousand twenty s we'll be landing in the twenty thirties, and it's going to be searching for life. It's very important that they get this, right. Because this could be their only shot to get titan for a very long time. It takes about ten years to get there. So if this mission fails, it'll be at least another twenty years before we get another chance to get over there. Now that being said. It's really rough on titan. It's atmosphere is mainly methane. It makes it extremely difficult to create. Flying drone? It's autonomous too. So let me let me tell you about this. It's autonomous for one. We can't fly a drone from here. Heff the signal go to tighten tell it, what to do and have the signal bounce back to earth. And tell us that it went totally fine in real time. The stuff that's been going on here on earth. Thomas. Drones the autonomous vehicles. Well, that's the kind of technology that's going to be used on titan with this quad copter. It's absolutely insane that this is actually happening. And thank you for everybody for listening. Now, let's get back into some titan news. And there's a few things that this drone has to really worry about one of them is the surface. Now, if the surface of titan, as scientists believe it is, is a sandy material the Roeder's could get clogged with sand. The instruments could get clogged with this sand, because if you think about it, what happens when a helicopter lands, it pushes everything aside seeing shoots everywhere. Dershowitz everywhere on the have to worry about getting these things insulated from the sand is much possible. Make sure they don't clog up now since the atmosphere is methane and there are methane rains that come down on titan. If methane rain comes down on the Lander on the Thomas drone. Well, it might clog up the instruments and I spoke with Carolyn Porco on Twitter. Caroline is the Cassini imaging lead. I said, hey, how cool is it that we are sending a helicopter to another world? She said how cool two hundred ninety degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Did you expect any other answer from a scientist? But also dazzling spectacular. I really hope I'm still around to see it, and that it works. And Caroline, makes a really great point here. It's really, really cold on tight almost negative three hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Super cold spaces very cold as well. When you're traveling through space, very cold. So the scientists at NASA, the engineers at NASA will have taken care of this, by the time it gets there, and then I followed it up with kind of expected to hear this. It looks incredibly complex. Hopefully, the technology is able to withstand that kind of temperature from the mission length seems like sand, maybe a factor in the long term, as well any thoughts, lots of moving parts on this one. She said, we're not sure the surfaces Sand Lake. It could be more like snow made of tar, but there will be large particles, made of organic compound and it's not clear to me what that might due to mechanical mechanisms dust on the moon was a real problem for Apollo astronauts, so it seems like the engineers have their work cut out for them on this one. They're going to be searching for life. They're going to be looking at closer looks close ups of the surface. Titan. They're going to have cameras on this thing, high definition cameras, that they'll be able to stitch together so they can make moving pictures movies, and it's going to look absolutely amazing.
