We're seeing what hurricane doreen did to. The islands were entire. Communities are covering water and some have simply been obliterated roads washed away an airport there wiped out hospitals and other emergency facilities there and across the bahamas flooded. We're learning to the conditions and freeport are much worse than expected expect at our c._n._n.'s patrick up men who joins us shortly saw it firsthand as ordinary citizens made trip after trip into the flood waters risking their lives to save others piccolo. How many people are out there still under a few hundred yeah a lot of homes and it's tough to get out there and get them talked long to keep doing it. I gotta get everybody hayman's. Gonna stop and get everybody. We're gonna speak with patrick shortly. They were monitoring late word from the authorities in the bahamas about conditions in casualties i that way new track for the hurricane and new word on where on the east coast i could get hit the hardest and for that we turn to c._n._n. Jennifer gray so where is it. What's the latest well anderson. I think move forward really the carolinas is where we need to focus on because that's where we could see a potential landfall as well as the biggest impacts moving forward. It is basically paralleling. The coast of florida finally picked up some forward forward speed today so moving out of grand bahama island their conditions will continue to improve but it's still one hundred ten mile per hour wind storm warm with gusts of one thirty in the winfield is expanding and that's interesting because tropical force tropical storm force winds now extend one hundred seventy five miles miles from the center so the storm is just sort of spreading out a little bit you could see these rain bands pretty heavy on the rain on the west side of that storm and that's pushing all the rain bands of rain the the wind into portions of florida getting some very heavy rain right now. That's going to continue we will have the potential for flooding in florida as well as very gusty winds tropical storm force winds this is going to move up to the north and eventually been back to the east and that's where it gets very interesting especially for the carolinas anderson dukes to continue picking up speed as it moves up the coasters is going to kind of get get slower well. It is expected to pick up up speed and that is good news for the carolinas. Yes we could possibly see a landfall there. It could be a category too but what when you're talking about faster speed you're you're not talking about as long duration of the winds as well as the rain in so that's the best case scenario when you have a storm like this is for it to get in and get out so by friday afternoon. This storm will be off the coast of north carolina <hes> but they still will feel a lot of impacts from this so when you talk about the carolinas. Is there a particular the city or area that we should particularly be looking at and that people should be warned about right. I think charleston is going to be a very vulnerable area in south carolina because of how low lying it is any push of water that goes in can definitely flood charleston very easily. If you're familiar with that area you know exactly what we're talking about and you will see those outer rain bands there as early as tomorrow afternoon and then when you talk about the forecast winds we're going to still see very gusty winds across the carolinas his as well north carolina. We know that it's very vulnerable there with the outer banks and all that push of water in to the barrier islands. We're going to see a lot of beach erosion agent and things like that so we do have those hurricane watches up for north carolina hurricane warnings even for south carolina and portions of north carolina as well as florida gorda florida still feeling the impacts but we do have to look forward and see where this is going to make a bigger impact in days to come. We could see four to seven seven feet of storm surge across portions of south carolina and north carolina by thursday and friday anderson. We've been talking about this storm for more than a week now and it's it's still not over and still could see some pretty big impacts in days ahead jennifer gray appreciate it. Thanks very much a moment ago. We showed you a portion of what patrick offense on today and some of the hardest hit areas. He joins us now from freeport in the bahamas patrick. I mean the litany of things you saw the people you talk to today. It's really just extraordinary ordinary of a lot of the things you witness. Talk a little bit about about what the day has been like for the people there. It has been a good day in the sense that for the first time they were able to get and boats and jet skis some of these books not much bigger than rowboats anderson and go look for friends and family and strangers and try in rescue them. It's an all volunteer navy here. There is no organization it. There's people who came out using their own gasoline. Their own boats risking their own lives to save others will one jetski ride one boat trip at a time these bahamians for saving the lives of their family neighbors and complete strangers in the launch from a bridge that is now underwater. There's is a dangerous mission. Hurricane-force winds are still raging here here. Howard armstrong was rescued after his house flooded ceiling. He's house was one of hundreds lost is storm surge from dorian swallowed whole neighborhoods armstrong's wife. Lynn didn't make it came over the roof. I would imagine twenty one feet at least <hes> we we're doing all right until the water kept coming up and all the appliances were going around the house like a washing machine. That's probably i got hit with something. In there and my poor little wife got hypothermia and she was standing on top of the kitchen cabinets until they disintegrated and then i i i i kept whether and she just around on me. I'm so sorry no. I know still how how did you you get out. I got out. I had a big vote anchored in there. I'm a crab fisherman and i have a a forty footer on a mooring which stayed there so i didn't even think it was there so i got out of the house after my wife drowned and because you couldn't be in there anymore more and i had no tools to solve a hole in the roof in the ceiling so i swear i saw my vote was still there and i swam. I took a chance and swam out to it. There's no power on grand bahama island. No running water sporadic cell service at best submerged cars blocked many roads. Maybe the last thing working here is this all volunteer crew voters risking their lives to save lives during fights them every trip. They make people coming with what what they have the jet skis they have. They're dealing with horrible weather conditions if not safety beyond a boat right now it's not to be out here and all and yet they say they know there are people out there while we're there wins. Flip jetski in the rescuers have to hold their efforts rescuer rationale. Daniels says there isn't much time left. They were exhausted so we had to carry some couldn't even make somebody put on on a jet ski. Return hold jackie o because the weight up. I i was my brother. He was cleaning onto the tree and he he made our faith but <hes> we wasn't able to locate his wife is a moment. We hope that she's okay but the rest who goes on on who had a lot the people working at the team. He'll you know it's very hard but you know what i'm saying but we overcome how're you doing you made dozens have been rescued but many more or remain in total desperation as they spend their third night waiting for salvation patrick. Just just go ahead the i mean it's just incredible a first of all the fact that civilians doing this helping one another and batman howard armstrong. I'm not even sure he. I mean the i can't believe i mean he saw his wife drown in front front of in front of him and he refuses to leave until her body is recovered. He refuses to leave. If that site until this body her body is recovered of course rescuers say they have to prioritize the living and there are still hundreds of people out there spending the night without not food or water electricity and probably losing hope at this point one final one. I could piece of news we we've seen since this whole storm began. Dan is just a little while ago. We saw what looked like. Coastguard helicopter flight over the island can only hope that the skies have cleared enough now that can begin tomorrow the rescues they they have the workup for them. There are people who don't have much time left here yeah. I'm just in that microcosm that you came upon the man talked about rescuing his brother but but his wife they couldn't find they still haven't been able to find her and that man saw his wife drowned. There's has no what's so horrifying about this. We're just getting glimpses of this. I mean thank goodness. You and your team and others are there to show it to show the world what's going on but we're really only getting glimpses of the horror of what is happening. At this stage howard armstrong. He said what when his wife died and and he knew that he didn't have much time left either. If he stayed there he left his wife behind. He swam underneath all the debris down to his his front door swim out of the front door. He's got bruises all over his body. From the things he collided to in the dark he swam up and then in the first thing he does is not try to save himself himself swim over his neighbor's house a woman who've been calling him all night long and he his wife and called back and said we're gonna come get you get you. He got into the house and he said he saw her dead body audie and at that point he knew there was nothing left for him to do and he tried to swim was able to find a boat and the boat rescued him. He's a man who's in shock who has nothing but the clothes on his back when he said to you that he his wife drowned in front of him i it was almost like realizing for the first time i mean it's just it's extraordinary <hes> it's extraordinary what's happening. It's horrific and patrick. I really appreciate you and your team. <hes> continuing to work around the clock as you have been thank you when when last we spoke with chef jose andres he and his organization world central kitchen they were gearing up to do what they've done and so many other recent disasters and we talk about an organization i mean this is jose and this volunteers volunteers and some hard working staff people who have been learning storm after storm disaster after disaster. We've i met up with them in r._v. When they started doing this we met with them san san juan in puerto rico and traveled with them across the island where they fed hundreds of thousands of people or hundreds of thousands the meals on a chain of islands with limited access in and out in the middle of such a powerful storm <hes> hosanna today was able to get to the islands and today all the preparation dedication. They're being put to the test especially on avocado where chef andres returned from just moments ago. I spoke to him by phone. Oh is that you you just helicoptered out of avocado. What did it look like from the air well. You're not the very beginning beginning. Has you come into the island very trump because he doesn't look like the trees. They've been affected by the hurricane at all. I need some very nice homes also those homes for some reason there and touch but in the moment you are five ten minutes over the ireland at the very beginning you will find the the <hes> the the national forests of article is one woman that there you see all of the scientific destruction of the forest the trees of the trees broken and other saying yes not every single home but imagine that has gone we were able to land in a heliport in a hotel coal albacore resorts and they were waiting for is they had poured <hes> clean and we were able to drop their. I think two thousand sandwiches albert thousand pieces of oranges. I'm was great because we were able to do initial left there. One of my team members sound to have enough time to do some intelligence. Tonight started reading sandwiches start learning. Where are we going to. How does that next step. Take places. I mean when you see the images from the air which we're showing right now. It just looks like street. After street of just rubble is he's shown a lot of water still on the ground. You see houses that have simply disappeared. Where do you begin when when you go on the ground. What do you actually do tamara. I will be able to <hes> to to move around on the island because i had a very short window to a right we <hes> we then <hes> helicopter and leave actually was going to stay but then what happens is as we were unloading on moving away which is another helicopter arrived and i got the phone. Call <hes> the boys. Maybe better for me to come back to start planning so i took that helicopter almost like it was the subways mean laura helicopters in <hes> taking some people out of the island so the next steps abc's this week of hotels which of the buildings structures are good. <hes> in this case for is an n._g._o. That feeds to our our curse kitchen there. There's going to be the most important thing for kids or you're describing what we're seeing on. The video is everything will. Many of the home where i was is next. I'm marina. The report is almost on ice. Oh almost twenty bay quotes that they were out the industry or on top of homes. Every single sheep on the marina years left the water and i flew away and some of them even were you sixty commuters. Do there are some seventeen thousand twenty thousand people who live on those islands <hes> do i. I mean you're able to bring two thousand sandwiches which is extraordinary to get that amount of sandwiches that amount food already what are do you have a sense of what the needs are this this point yeah we feel very much even as many people as some people in the islands that they have homes that they'd nothing so how was sold all damage <hes>. I'm guessing at the very least we're gonna be <hes> trying to be bringing between five and seven thousand. There's the moral won't be only thousand because he's as the maximum capacity that we could bring the helicopter weeks. We we are going to be <hes> you've seen but that's why i believe is going to be so important that we have star <hes> doing kitchen <hes> right there and seeing my number right now. We're gonna go for ten thousand meals evil. You have voiced either hire. We waited the most important not to cook but these truths the vision that not spend i already heard some people are getting very nervous because there are the main <hes> two foot <hes> shops in the island board kind of destroy where we're totally gone and so you know people are already about are getting nervous right police so that's why i believe is important for us to start bringing our brings that that peace of mind on the people that i'm sure you said you've seen a lot of helicopters moving back can fourth you see a lot of a lot of people on the ground out from outside groups like yours. Is there already starting to be a presence presence of rescue personnel. I know the coast guard has been doing some operations. I the only <hes> coastguard isos the big talker prime minister <hes> they had <hes> name on <hes> <hes> of the american storytellers. I'm guessing maybe them by so i it was there and he probably is trying to <hes> use <hes> fly over to see this agent in grammar already. I've seen a lot of the <hes> u._s. Courts guard during a lot of <hes> work <hes> bringing in your people to the main hospital here <hes> in also is being a lot of movement mine of <hes> private helicopters <hes> i guess these people that they have the possibility and the means <hes> some of those probably helicopters they being removing and also in your people heard from some pilots don't get people <hes> broken arm or broken neck on things like that and i guess people that have the means and the ability. You've seen every resource they they they. Can you still use those authors to leave the island and stuff going on yeah <hes> jose. It's amazing that you've already been able to make two thousand sandwiches and drop them off today and i know you're feeding elsewhere as well so oh jose. Thanks for the update. I appreciate it. Thank you very much incredible work much more ahead on the storm including conversations one of the many volunteer rescuers who are working under some of the most challenging conditions and responding what you've already seen as almost unimaginable need and later the man who picked up what are now known to be the only survivors of the fire the sea off the coast of southern california helix describe what happened when the survivors came toward his boat to try to get on and what he witnessed that and more as we continue support for anderson cooper three sixty comes from our friends at rocket mortgage by quicken loans imagine imagine how it feels to have an award winning team by your side through every step of the mortgage process. You will find rescuers in the bahamas. People can tomlinson who joins us now in free poor kevin. I know you've you've been out there trying to rescue people. Tell me what what it's been like and how many people just what you've been seeing these last twenty four forty eight hours well under certain <hes> measure to have me on the show. I bohm really appreciated the attention that you're giving the bahamas. <hes> we have a had so many persons out there working as a community trying our best to help persons who are in low-lying areas areas in grand bahama. Tom over the bridge versus the law in their houses. We had people um sleeping in two days. I couldn't get out. I've have needed to be rescued. <hes> we have like this is really heartbreaking but to know that this community it does come together and we help each other out that percents <hes> it seems the what's the what's the what's the food water situation there. Now i mean is there. Is there anything for people. The eat and drink is anything being handed out. I know there was a shelter and i think the night you were there went from like twenty five people to several hundred on a matter of hours we we went from twenty five to four hundred person in less than two hours and that has been really pound and persons who just try with walking working on foot trying to get some <hes> shelter and yeah we do have a situation because a lot of the persons who came out abandoned their homes mm sunday no food and water and so what has revised that the shelf is how they <hes> the food and accommodate relate that so now we have a problem. I think i've been telling people all day that i in another days or so. It's become really a great problem if we don't get some help help but i understand that the prime minister and members of nema are on the way they would just reading with claire to get in here to get things done so <hes>. We're looking looking forward to that. You've been through storms on the island before i think there was hurricane francis. If i remember does does anything compared to what you are seeing that this is the worst experience i've ever had and i've had five five of them probably <hes> i've never seen it like this. I've never i seen it like this. I when you look at what sorry i'm getting choked up but when you when you when you see what was is happening around here and you look at people's lives just being the loss of lives you know that that's something that you know i kind of get over that and so this this is something that really and truly we will never ever forget as a community have spaghetti but we appreciate you for a few letting the world know what's softening it but <hes> we really really appreciate what kevin i appreciate all you're doing and i'm just so some of the so many people reaching out so many people in jet skis trying to save tabor's. It's just extraordinary kevin. Thomas and we'll check in with you short again. Thank you very much. Thank you for the work you're doing. I want to give a wider view. Now of the tremendous impact attack this storm has had and we'll have we're talking about for years to come late this evening. I spoke with a joy gibrilla. Oh who's director-general for the bahamas ministry of tourism listen joy. We're showing the picture of avocado grandma bacau. It's it is extraordinary. You almost cannot tell l. where the sea is and we're the land is everything just water covers so much of it and it's hard to even see houses standing you can see some rooftops but the destruction is really it is shocking and if i can put it in context as we speak about abbott's specifically in the first instance avocado was all very developed masha the the capital of very developed city and so they're all reports going out that perhaps it was not that is not the case at all it was the in terms of tourist visitor arrivals the second largest island in terms of visitor arrivals on really developed really really beautiful and so when you see that level of devastation and destruction genuinely is hard reggae you. I believe you have some staff missing in the islands that are hit hardest. Is that right that's correct so if i speak about avocado specifically we are now how to the point of just deep deep concern but three of our staff members. We've not had any contact from them. We're reaching out abusing every we channeled possible and so if by any miracle day hearing this that families want to know and we wanted out and just in terms of hospital acidity is are there enough hospital facilities. Are you seeing you know are there are many wounded people at at this point. Do you have any sense of accurate death toll at this point on so we're only obviously able to confirm the five official deaths. We do believe that that number will increase. We know that there are many injured. The injured have been and and are in the process of being brought to the capital to nestle the hospital. Treatment grand bhave off second largest on hospital. Aspinall in the commonwealth of the bahamas absolutely devastated underwater. It's totally compromised. We're looking at pictures of the hospital in freeport and it looks like there's water. I mean up to people's ankles in inside the hospital. It's an it's worse than that insta- worst possible conditions so everyone had to be removed on. I think this is why this is such a humanitarian montenegrian would stay because when a main hospital is no longer operable or usable and you we know that there are people who are critically ill seriously ill when he debris was flying. They acted as projectile so we know they're a dream first of all trying to move them to nassau or another island whether it's a clinic or a hospital and getting the right chair yeah on the tension or those people is a priority. I mean even you know things. People don't consider of people needing dialysis or just regular access to medication medication medication. There needs to be refrigerated insulin. I mean these are these are the you know day to day three day four and week one and two and three disasters astor's that are the follow on effects you so right. You know someone asked me does today. What do the unions need. What the people need and i said every single thing that you could imagine <hes> that includes the most basic of utensils basic human human needs but when you start looking at the requirement for medicine we just heard a bleed that would someone who is a diabetic coma and they were the meeting with people to see if they can rescue that person so that's good let alone you know it's just actually it's distressing. I just don't now how to articulate it. In any other way. <hes> joy i appreciate talking to you and i'm so sorry for what you and everyone there is going through and i and i hope help his on the way and more in the coming hours and days. Thank you for talking to us and this thank you thank you to the people of the world old. More breaking news in hurricane dorian and <hes> sadly at breaking news on on the on the storm sadly do not expect this to be the last time for this particular item. The death toll has just risen according to the prime minister now stands at seven at the top of the program. We showed you the new forecast track of the storm. It has gained both forward and northward momentum. The winfield is expanding and those winds are increasingly starting hit. Florida's atlantic macos millions of course are in the danger zone. There randi kaye is in fort pierce forest tonight north of palm beach along the shore. What is it like where you are right now randi. It's been a steady rain here anderson pretty much all day since we got here at times we were getting pounded by the rain. The winds were really heavy. Were in a slate slate low right now but we know not to let our guard down of course and sort of the folks in this area <hes> but the wind was so heavy at times anderson so forceful that we could barely open the car door just to get out of the car of a word the fort pierce inlet so <hes> this is the the entry way into the ocean from here <hes> behind me step out of the ways you can see. That's a sailboat and we found that out here <hes> hours ago. It still hasn't moved. Luckily we were a little concerned that it would be pushed from the wind actually onto the more of the land but it's the water there the inlet it was likely more out in out in the inlet where we found some other boats and <hes> it was either pushed by the heavy rains and the winds to this area. It's sort stuck on. It's side. There hasn't moved very much <hes> since we got here so that is good news but that's exactly why they say even though hurricane doreen didn't make landfall all here in florida you still have to be concerned about those hurricane force winds that are edging dangerously close to florida that we've been experiencing along with tropical storm force winds wins <hes> throughout the day here in the fort pierce area anderson or evacuation orders still in place for the barrier islands for some it seems as though where we were last night on singer island that barrier island that has been lifted palm beach county evacuations have been lifted here in fort pierce in saint lucie county. We just got an alert on our way over here to do this. Live <hes> shot with you that <hes> that <hes> evacuation mandatory evacuation is going to be lifted at six a._m. Tomorrow morning but even as we were coming in there were police officers everywhere where the town is boarded up the gas stations are still closed <hes> so it's going to take some time to sort of turn that over the internet around even after the evacuation orders are lifted randy randi appreciate it thank you i want to go now to miguel marquez up the coast a bit in vero beach florida and is rarely mentioned the winds and rains or or whipping up and then calming down miguel. How is it <hes> or you are much the same here. Evacuation orders are lifted. They were lifted much earlier today in interestingly as they were lifted. We've seen some of the roughest weather throughout the day. Both the winds and the rain coming down the rain can be quite hard now the winds picking up at times but that storm still about one hundred miles off off the coast here and moving north as it moves north there are evacuation orders going into effect farther north that the uncertainty of this storm from is what really has people sort of unsure whether to come back when to open their businesses and and and how to deal with the reality of what's playing out in the bahamas is not lost on people here is well. I mean for all the people who came out here today to see the storm and then see what was going on. The bahamas were very much on their minds. What's what's happening there and and to realize how they were spared a direct hit by this storm and how bad things really could have been here and now other places farther north from here in the carolinas georgia all of them now waiting to see what exactly storm does and and obviously that's where a lot of focus now now on the carolinas. <hes> jennifer gray in the weather center was saying that <hes> without really worth watching the next day or so miguel appreciate it coming up. We're going to talk to the mayor of charleston. South south carolina city may be extremely vulnerable from hurricane dorian. According to the latest forecast is just saying we'll be right back. Go and subscribe to boss files today to hear some of my interviews from our special documentary report as mentioned the new project you track of hurricane doreen has it raking charleston south carolina's earliest thursday afternoon as a category two hurricane as you know estimated two hundred forty four thousand people have already evacuated the coastal areas in and around their jaw tech lindbergh is charleston's mayor and he joins me now mayor. Thanks for being with us. You say the hurricane poses a triple a triple threat from charleston. Can you just explain what what that means well. We're the low country a low low lying area and when you have that combination combination anderson of heavy rains and high tides and storm surge <hes> brings extra water right into our city so that's our real threat and our real concern at this point and <hes> i must share with you that <hes> charleston awesome such beautiful inhospitable city that it's really contrary to our culture to be asking people leave town but if you live in a low lying area we're we're asking you to still there still time to get out yeah well. It's also such a beautiful town. It's a it's a hard time to leave a i know what are those in your community do to prepare for the storm. I assume people been boarding up things like that if they if they're staying well absolutely they've been battening down the hatches as the city has with this own buildings but we've also been sandbagging we we we distributed almost seventy five thousand sandbags and just the last two days <hes> we've been checking pumps and adding pumps and barricading and and getting ready to actually close down streets where we know flooding will occur her because <hes> this may sound funny anderson but they'll be watering the streets and if somebody's riding down the street acts like form awake and <hes> so we want prevent that as much as we can't obviously when you see the pictures from the bahamas i mean that obviously you put ads the concern ratchets. It's up. Have you been through hurricane. Matthew hurricane irma u._c. Say that if people's homes flooded for those storms than they should absolutely evacuate for that this storm armor is that right absolutely and the devastation the bahamas. It's just heartbreaking isn't it. It's just <hes> it's just terrible.
