head coach of started the owner of the Dallas Cowboys nwea cells. That's the soccer league. Lisa Baird in the WNBA. Kathy engelhardt and one more one more mark Cuban the mavs who's been very outspoken and typing things like do your f ing job on twitter and he says that he just might run for president this year so we do know that Robert Kraft gave Donald trump a million dollars when he was running. We know that Jerry Jones gave Donald trump a million dollars. So I think it's savvy to bring a guy like Cuban. I'm surprised because I usually think this president likes to fall You know How people around him who fawn all over him a very obsequious and ostentatious and just sycophantically kisses behind and they don't he fires them so I think it's actually surprisingly good move because mark. Cuban is a very smart guy when it comes to business. Various Smart Guy. He's savvy he's sixty one. He's probably in his prime when it comes as a businessman. So and you know a WHO's a vocal critic and I think it it shows you're an adult a grown man or grown woman when you can bring in someone who is outspoken against you but you realize that for the greater good they will help now. I have a feeling that trump doesn't even know Cubans on the list but no but trump said. We have to get our sports back. I'M TIRED OF WATCHING BASEBALL Games. That are fourteen years old when he said that r Kelly said what did you say about fourteen years old. Sorry you'll probably see a joke like that on spayed or somewhere else but MLB NHL NBA. They'd all be playing right now and ever since really go. Bare tested positive. And he's okay now but every league has done this and the NFL of course is the most popular league in the United States and they've already adjusted plans for the draft. We talked about that. Still GonNa have it. But it's not gonNA be altogether We know that the Olympics have been pushed back a year and golf and tennis and all that so is trump tired of watching games. That are old. I watch any games. Do you know what I watched a little bit yesterday. Bulgarian clog dancing. Well Anyway. Before that I watched a rerun obviously from last year team handball. Apparently I have something called the Olympics channel. This is this is why it's feast or famine because it was famine. Tv wise unless a dramatic word but as part of the old adage. When I was growing up we had three networks. What no Fox. And then we had. Pbs and then we had two independent stations channel forty four and channel thirty six and we got garbage reruns most the time so you basically had six channels and most of it was trash. Now it's still mostly trash but I have a channel called the Olympics channel which just shows old Olympics nonstop and I didn't even know I had it heard about. I don't even know I had it but there was a team handball match from Denmark between Norway and Bulgaria and I know that my Danes are some of the best in the world in fact when I was at a reunion in Denmark family reunion. My grandfather's from there in nineteen ninety. Six one of my relatives was a pilot for Sas Scandinavian Air Service and. He told me that he had just flown back from Atlanta from the Olympics that the Danish team handball team which won the gold and he said they came up in a cockpit and he shouldn't they should on the gold medals and Yacky imagine that used to be able to go in the copy. My my friend Steve. Right before nine eleven. He was landing at Logan Airport in Boston and he asked the stewardess. Do you think in the cockpit. She's like yeah why not actually stood behind the two pilots as they were landing. He wasn't even in a seat they said. Yeah you want check out sure. And he's a he's a he's bigger than me he's six two but he's a fat guy totally choked out the pilots. It was a much more simple time back then east but yes we would like to get our sports going again and I can guarantee you. That trump ain't watching these reruns if he's flipping channels. I was actually the only time I've seen the guy in person and I wanna say it's the only time I've seen a president. A standing president in person was a couple years ago. The Army Navy game in Philadelphia trump was down on the field and I thought the security was going to be horrible with my media pass. I went through everything. I didn't say I wouldn't have had a weapon. I still had to go through metal detectors but I was surprised at how lax security was. The trump was that I wasn't Washington. Dc when I saw marine one go over and there's always marine one marine to marine three. So there's like three choppers you'll see one on the White House back on but there's usually two or three of them and you don't so you don't know which one the president is and if you WANNA take potshot with a Stinger Service air missile or something. I might talking about. Weapons and the presence oppression. Do I get in trouble? But what I'm trying to say is That's the only time I've seen again person and I'm sure that he left at halftime. You know he goes out there. We who make America Great Avenue and I'm not getting anything that's him. It's just you know even our most sporty. Presidents Kennedy Love Football Knicks. Ford played football at Michigan. Nixon liked football Taft threw out the first pitch but deep down. I think they got bigger fish to FRY. But we'll talk about that when we come back we might well. We'll come back from a break here in three minutes when sports is GONNA COME BACK ISLAND. No lines are open at one. Eight hundred CENA second on sports. Talk a talk Izzo. Mike Mass Amino back on the show again. He's here to talk about the Hubble telescope. We had a guy who wrote a book about it yesterday. Science Channel on Sunday is going to be doing a thirtieth anniversary show about the Hubble so we got navy seal foundation coming up next to jump brings us. We're GONNA talk about Janu about getting School kids their lunches during the pandemic. We're going to have an author on. That's going to talk about how the legal issues have changed during the pandemic and they were going to talk about the Hubble telescope. Maybe here's the funny thing that makes me laugh in a good way. If it wasn't for the pandemic this would still be my lineup. I I'll go. I'll get off the information sports superhighway's sometimes but I'll get on the on ramp real quick again but as I say you know trump sick of fourteen year old reruns but Dr Anthony Fao. Ci Of course is a guy that we look to. He's always out those horrifying standup charades as they say in England. Charade these Those press conferences do more to hurt than help the country I think. Because it's just it's fractious and there's a lot of posturing and it's a campaigning and it's padding yourself on the back it's just so weird. It's all embarrassing. I don't know it's just all very very embarrassing. If you think it's cool right now. When you get to my age stuff like that I think embarrasses you see Ruka older than you think looks so foul. She was asked about trump says. He wants sports back so they went to the nation's top infectious disease expert and they said and when is it coming back and He said well there's no fans and players are sequestered. He said quote. There's a way of doing that. Nobody comes to the stadium. Put the players in big hotels wherever you want to play. Keep them very well. Surveilled have them tested every single week and make sure they don't wind up infecting each other or their family and just let them play the season out and quote now Fao Ci was also asked what the current BIOS specifically means for a short and MLB season and start of the NFL season at fans are not in attendance. And how that will hurt the league's and he said that they'll still be plenty of interest. Well Yeah I mean we. We saw a poll from the Stolman School of business at Seton Hall and when asked it was basically three quarters of people said that even when the game even when the Cova Nineteen vaccine is out and available. There's still not going to the Games now. I don't believe that because you're asking them now before there is a vaccine right now. Nobody wants to go. I remember I was at the game. I call it a game. It didn't happen but game. Three of the nineteen eighty nine world series. I was candlestick park and I was wearing my raider starter jacket. Mia's hat and there was a huge earthquake. And I got freaked out and they go. You can go back and I'm like Nah. I was still spooked on the stadium. I go back there because I was spooked. People are spooked right now. But after you get the all clear and there's a month of everybody knocking acting normal. I hope and another month. You want to go back to the stadium. Nope not going. There's a vaccine if you get it. We'll give you a shot. Nope not going. That number will come way down income way below. I think it would. They'll still be. I think maybe about as high as a quarter of the people but now three quarters so we know. Mlb has been brainstorming about beginning of the season in Arizona with no fans in attendance and putting the players in a bubble and the governor of Arizona. Doug Ducey loosey-goosey Doug Ducey. Easy peasy lemon squeezy Japanese. And he said that he'd be on board with hosting games. You told you say today. I have had discussions with the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Well I want to hold the context of those discussions in confidence. I want to let everyone know. Zona at the right time is very open minded to hosting whatever major league baseball would like from the state at the time it would be appropriate for public health if Arizona were in a position to reopen I think he meant the content of the discussions not to contest. But whatever F- Ouchi Is very interested in seeing baseball back. Because his favorite team are the nats he said. I want to see them play again. Which is good article in the chronicle today about how he has been You know this has been his career. He was out here in the eighties and San Francisco working on stuff. But I think about as with anything. We acclimate right. I think people are pretty resilient we acclimate and now this is starting is starting to feel a little bit normal a little more routine and we look on TV and movies and see people you see a New York street just packed shoulder to shoulder with people. And you're like oh my gosh. We did that now. I see people high five who he touched or guys hugging each other like. Oh my gosh. They hugged after that goal. It all starts to look a little bit of weird. Now it's GonNa take a while to circle back stateside and get back into civilian life style if I can use a military term there but when I was at the comedy store in La and that was it about a month ago today. And I was down there and I I called up my buddy who lives down there now. Derek Papa said that we're going to the comedy store so we went over there and people were making jokes about crony. They're like. Hey thanks for being brave and the next day continued onto Arizona and right around Coachella on the road. I hear that they've canceled spring. Training people were like. Why did you keep going if I if I have a hotel paid for and it's paid for and I've taken time off from work? Why would I turn around and come back to me? That seems a million times more stupid island on some hikes and things like that. Yeah why not? But I'm thinking about like when Derek and I were at the That comedy store. That was just a matter of days before those things got shut down because when I came back and I was in Pasadena on the way back. That's when mayor Garcetti He basically closed down in La and remember when we were doing shows here. And I said how long until the war isn't sharks. Closed their things down. I what's GonNa Happen with the giants? I was saying that I thought it was a remote possibility that the warriors and sharks my close down but I thought there's no way they're gonNA close down baseball because you know there's no roof and now we things change on a dime you know and as I said it's hard to believe that that was just a month ago that I was down in Arizona and you know still going to bars and Scottsdale. That were just absolutely packed with people not anymore. You know and I tell you what it seems like ten years ago because so all you can do now just as a little tale of the tape is just try to embrace the things that are going. Well I mean a lot of people who never get to see their families get to see their families now. You know you're saving money on Commute. The environment's better. I don't care about the well you know. It's not an environmental crazy tree hugger but you can say look environment's better. I guess you know. We don't have those hippie organic farmers markets anymore. That are staying on the air. Just kidding but I look we all want sports to come back and people are going to be a little spooked when they do come back. We know that it's GonNa take a while and we don't even know if this is the new normal how we're going to have to socially distanced each other. You know do this three months a year four months a year half a year. I heard a scientist yesterday. Said it'll be September of twenty twenty one before people wall started going back to stadium again and I just want to slap that guy on the face. Not because he's deliver bad news. If he's telling the truth I'd be like well that's heavy. He has no fricken. `Way Dr Evil No frigging way of knowing. It's September of twenty twenty one. Now if he's right he could be like Woo Hoo on the ESA guy that said the Astros win the world series and three years. He could be that guy but No I think A good way to look at it and it's kind of a defeatist manner. But maybe you don't get your hopes. Crushed is the fact that You could say and I've heard this. Just pretend that twenty twenty is going to be like this and if it gets lifted before the end of the air then it's gravy. I can't do that. That's too long. I sort of think of it is. I hope we get some summer is what I would like to do. I hope we get all of July. I hope we get most of June but we do know that April is going to be a one hundred percent. Lock it down seal in place. Coast to coast and around the world on American Forces Radio Network. It's great to welcome back to the program. It's been a while but our buddy John Branca's of course you know him from the Espn Award winning show sports science well. He's here to talk about an event he's got on on Friday. It's a live streaming event. That kill cliff is putting on for the Navy Seal Foundation John. Welcome back to the show. It's great to have you again. Tell us a little bit more about what you're going to be doing here. Yeah you know I appreciate you having me back you know. Obviously everything is pretty crazy right now and You know I think that what we all really need our words of wisdom on how to be resilient so the live event that we're doing is on Friday Eight and it's all about being resilient and we're going to be hearing from Ray Lewis and stumped some incredible Navy Seals Ryan Bater Robbie lawler Guys who are really at the top of their game so we're GONNA get words of inspiration on just simply tips on how to be resilient Mindset that it takes to be resilient to bounce back especially during a crazy time like this and you know there's nobody better than you know navy seals and elite athletes to sort of guide our way through this. You know in no way is this. You know a telephone. This is really what we WANNA do is almost public service. Something that we think that that You know the general audience really needs to hear from the best and brightest minds in the country On resilience. Yeah you're right. I mean there's no better person to tell you that and I've had seals on the past in fact just yesterday I had Mark Devine on the show and he was talking about when he started Seal school there. Were one hundred. Eighty five candidates at the end only nineteen graduated and he was number one class so I think the one thing is is people say oh my Gosh. I'm not Mark Devine and I think that's where you're going to do a good job with it because you're going to say I'm not a navy seal either but let's take what they do these amazing men and we'll put it into what we can do. A hundred percent. You know it's you know. I've had the great fortune of working with some of the best athletes in the world throughout my entire career of have the great fortune of working with two incredible men and women and men and women in the armed forces you know when I tell them look. I'm a mere. Mortal averages could be You know I represent the everyday person and I really WANNA learn from the best as to how to stay calm and how to stay focused You know I think that this situation particular. You know this Kobe situation. You know it's one thing to be able to deal with problems that you've created yourself in your own life. You know making a bunch of bad choices and you know sort of suffering the repercussions but you know the the sort of situation that we're all in right now is just been thrust upon us unexpectedly so I think that you know. We're about five weeks into this now and I think we're all trying to wrap our brains around you know. How permanent is this? You know when when do we bounce back to quote normal is they're going to be a new normal That uncertainty certainly is requiring us to be resilient and requiring us to understand that we're going to have to dig deep In terms of you know really thriving I also think one of the things. I think we can learn from Navy seals. And I've always been told that at seal training the the linebacker types they are the first to ring the bell. But it's those wiry thin guys who just say you only leaving as if I'm dead and so really it's it's a lesson in the power of your mind and you can be five hundred to ninety eight pounds and you can still be just as mentally strong which I think. A lot of people don't know that they can be. Yeah you know it's it's interesting how You know it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the fighting God and you know that's certainly true for us. Gee You know we are. A- you know in terms of being You know incredibly resilient. It's something that all of us possess you know it crosses you know race religion and gender and size and any kind of thing that can separately is out you can look at you know the different hands that are being Delta people. At this time you know some people are really Threat you know some people are really thriving and making out you know because Cova is good for their business. You know for many others. It's awful for their business And we're just being thrown into. It seems like there. There's this massive chasm that's forming That's GonNa require us to you. Know D- Dig deep into really Pull some inner strength out so you know in terms of the kind of person who can be resilient you're right you know it's not just you know someone who's you know elite linebacker in the NFL or excite or even a navy seal It needs to be everyday people One thing that I've heard is that you know average is a choice you know being average and you know saying Oh. There's nothing that I can do. You know that's really a choice you know. We're hoping that this event will give people a toolbox to really reach into in terms of refining their ability to be very well said a couple more questions for John. Broncos is going to host a live streaming event Friday from seven to eight. Pm Eastern It's GonNa Stream Sponsored by kill cliff energy drinks how to be resilient in the new world Your show sports science of course was such a phenomenon and I think I don't know if I give you the the credit the credit or the blame or whatever but you started such a trend John that you know. I'm watching a baseball game. And they'll show the outfielder a great catch and then after the break they'll come back and we'll say you know he had a fourteen point two percent chance on making that cats. I'm like come on. What are you John? Branca's I mean everybody's going with these. Where do they get these numbers from John? Yeah you know it's interesting because you know we are very blessed to be at the right time at the right place the right networks and you know we. Sports Science went on for eleven years and eighteen hundred episodes. And you know we feel that we need you know A Little Dent in the sports universe in terms of being able to reshape the way that we look at sport. It's interesting because although I do believe that that we certainly have played a part in the rise of analytics. It was obviously moving. That was going on. We were just sort of at the forefront of it but I'm the first one to say look don't use analytics as Gospel It's just another factor to consider when analyzing anything I love to say you know the expression bigger stronger. Faster does not mean better Everybody's like oh I want the biggest strongest fastest guy or you know I want. I want this particular thing from an analytics point of view. And I'm like look if you were to use that metric you know Larry. Bird probably doesn't play in the NBA so there. There's an obvious intent to affect even more important than what the metrics w but the metrics can guide you To understanding how difficult something was In order to happen you know what the physics underlying actually are And I think that it's really interesting to be able to put sport in into look through the Lens of science just to give you a totally different perspective but by no means do I think that analytics are the gospel of sport. I think that they're just another thing to consider. Amen to that. Yeah when you were doing sports science one of the things that was so catchy about to was you had great production values and graphics and you had the studio there which Kinda looked like a pseudo lab as well and it looked like no expense was spared. And if it wasn't you pulled off a like it was out of all those episodes. Can you think of one or two moments where you were just like you know? Wow I'm behind the scenes. I'm doing this and I still can't believe what we've uncovered here. Honestly I say this you know being in the world Just underneath the name sports nights honestly I every day every day that I get to work with Immediately lead athlete. I'm just blown away and I am saying. Oh my God how am I here And it's obviously come sort of form Full Circle where when we started the show actually conceived in two thousand six and launched in two thousand seven. That's pre iphone just to get people You know perspective out of a whole generation athletes who have grown up. You know kids who are watching it since they were ten and now there are twenty three and they're like Oh my God I watched your show growing up and I can't believe I'm here on the set It's it's interesting how that's come full circle because when you start off with the Ray Lewis News and drew brees Gerald and you know now when you have the more you know the the sort of new crop of athletes. It's amazing you know but I the thing that blows me away. The most is how there's this perception that elite athletes have like sort of this air dam of potentially you know being arrogant or You know to sort of key super cocky and honestly the reason why we never paid anybody to be involved in sports science and the reason being is that the best don't want they don't do it for the money and money's just a byproduct and they wanna learn growing so the thing that surprised obviously it should be surprising everybody Is that look athletes. You know lead athletes and elite people in their respective fields are willing to do stuff for free because they're gonNA learn something that's GonNa make them that much better so while I'm standing there off of watching what's going on in front of me. The athlete is soaking it up in awe. Well because they're learning something and you know that sort of two way Mutual respect is something that I really cherish very cool last question when The sport of golf is such a tortuous psychological game. Because of course the the inertia is all on the Golfer. You're not reacting or getting chase or chasing down everyone and I've seen as have you over the years some of the more ridiculous Items that You know the the golf Medicare whatever where the golf club breaks in the middle. So you don't swing too hard and the Rodney dangerfield little target thing. What is it about sports science and golf that you've been able to find? Have you found anything to help the average golfer because it just seems like? It's we think about that more than any other sport like. How can I win? Yeah I a lot of people asking the question hardest working out to answers the hardest sports play like off the couch having never done. It is hockey the hardest sport be excellent at this golf In terms of giving people advice on how to be great at golf one thing I can tell you is there clearly is not a correct answer in how to swing a golf club. All that needs to happen. Is that the face of the club. Needs to be squared. The ball upon impact. And you look at everybody from Jim. Furic to you. Know if you look at Jim Furic and then look at Rory mcilroy or tiger woods and see how different their swings are. They're all different kinds of approaches to generate power But at the end of the you know at the point of impact. The club head is sloshed. Still at a super two and really not over thinking golf is is one of these really interesting games where there's a fantastic book called the Zen of Golf and it just talk about how we over think everything in Golf is the perfect example of look every note two shots at the same and everything is different and it's an incredibly unfair sport because the worst you are at it the harder it is to play. If you're shanking it off the tee. You're hitting from behind the tree that a PGA tour going to get out you know took TV. A tour tour player couldn't get out so If we don't oversee thinking and we allow our brains to just understand you have to swing the club and be flushing impact. It's amazing how relaxing and not worrying about everything does help your golfing tremendous And that's really kind of bubba Watson approach. You know he never took a golf lessons this kind of self taught and he's got this big huge draw in his In the plight of his ball and he just plays it he just is like well. I can't hit it straight so I'm just GONNA play this big drop. That's one approach that that certainly does work with golf. It's go with what you got and don't over think it very cool. We WanNA make sure that everybody gets to check out Our guest John Branca S- Brought to you by Kiel cliff energy drinks. It's GonNa be a livestream Friday seven to eight. Pm Eastern all sun's rays will benefit the navy seal foundation. So Real Quick John. Where can we see the stream yet? You can go to kill clips I go to kill cliffs Youtube Page on Youtube. Coast to coast and around the world on the American Forces Radio Network. It's our pleasure to welcome Alexis Glick to the program. Of course you know her from a lot of her TV work as a business anchor on the Fox Nbc ALSO MSNBC. But now she is the CEO of Jenn Youth. And you think about how many kids out there rely upon their school meal which they're not getting it right now on so thereby there's a new fund called the cove in Nineteen Emergency School Nutrition Fund. Alexis thanks for being on the show. I saw the number thirty million kids. The number could be that high that this is their only meal during the day. I cannot believe the number is is that high but this is why. It's urgent to get this fun going. it is. It's remarkable and rick. Thank you so much for having me and I feel so privileged to be here with your incredible audience who who do so many selfless things on behalf of all of us and particularly the time like this but yes. The statistics are staggering. And I think the reason why folks like me who can normally sleep pretty decently tonight or having a hard time sleeping wondering if we're doing enough is because the the nature of shutting down school buildings is so unprecedented in the history of this country. And what we're recognizing what it's calling attention is. It's not that school buildings are fully closed. It's the fact that school buildings must stay. Open to feed America's kids and so I keep reminding folks that while we share out in the news at one hundred twenty four thousand schools or shutdown of which ninety eight thousand are. Us public schools. They're shut down for learning and learning his moved to digital platforms. But the reality is those ninety thousand. Us Public School buildings need to remain open to feed our nation's youth and as many as thirty million kids daily reply rely on school meals for their daily nutrition and we see the record number of furloughs and jobless claims over the last two three weeks it just demonstrates how much more of that school building is going to be needed and in this country. Frankly it's ground zero for feeding and the great equalizer and I wanted to ask you about New York too. Because you are Miss Manhattan. You grew up there. You went to Columbia. You worked on Wall Street you worked in TV there. How're we doing at Ground Zero Right? Now it's it's really. It's a really interesting thing you know. New York is the largest urban school district in the United States and You know some of the other large ones are ones. That are very familiar to you whether that's Los Angeles or or Dallas or Chicago or down in Miami date. I speak to the superintendent down there very very frequently. Look the good news is is that in large urban environments. A lot of folks are stepping up For those major schools Major School districts since they account for if you at the largest school districts in the nation they account for up to five million kids. It's a membership of about twelve of them that makes up what's called the urban school food alliance. Would we have found just to be really frank with you? As we launched just over two weeks ago a coded Nineteen Emergency School Nutrition Fund. Because while I'm a born and bred New York City Kid and we support New York City schools and New York state schools for that matter. What we do is work in school buildings in every zip code in the nation and so we'll we launched this emergency school nutrition fund. Just over two weeks ago. We gave schools the chance to apply for up to three thousand dollars or resources equipment to help them deliver meals in a safe insecure environment. And we'll tell you that I find incredibly Sobering is that what we're finding is is that the federal government or the state governments your knee Oregon and and everywhere else around the United States food gets into the school building and the federal government and state governments. Continue to support. That as you've heard the governor talk about here in the Oregon Governor's talk about across the United States. Here's the thing food getting into the cafeteria is one thing but it's the people. The frontline workers the school nutrition teams the cafeteria lady the school bus driver the volunteer and these school buildings who are taking the meal from outside the cafeteria and delivering them in a grab and go model to prevent congregation due to this pandemic. Those folks are the people that were working with on the front lines in our nation's schools across the United States. And what they're asking us for is. How can you help us get the resources? The coolers the soft sided cooler bag the sanitary equipment that we need so that we can change the mechanism of the delivery of the meal from inside the cafeteria to outside a safeway whether it's a grab and go or via school buses and so what I'll tell you about the ORC. In every other community in this country and particularly in rural communities folks are stepping up but the need is so great so when we launch this fun two weeks ago in the course of less than five days we had fifteen million dollars in requests them over five thousand schools. The numbers escalates daily It's one of the most sobering and shocking things I've witnessed in in my career. And you know when we did this. We launched a campaign With the Hashtag for school sake asking folks to raise their hands for school to help us feed our nation's kids and and what I'd like to think rick is is is threefold number one People raising their hand. We have this info graphic of of kids with our hands up with a heart in their hand. You know one. We want people to put their heart in their hand. Whatever little they can do Contribute to this fund which is now twenty five million in requests from school buildings across the United States Number One can help us. Can they go to our website to Jimmy's now dot org or text to vote with us. I'm sorry text text to help with us. We have a texting setup for schools two zero two but secondly to think those frontline workers school nutrition professionals as they had those volunteers who were standing on the front lines every single day guaranteeing that the food gets to those kids and families and a number three reminding American people that while this is happening right now during this pandemic. This situation is not going to go away months from now not too much now. The likelihood is it remains throughout the summer. It could very well impact the school building next year and frankly in America every single day. Thirty million kids rely on school meals and now with the number of families being Berlow D-. It's going to be far more than that So I pray to coming out of this. We remember the people in the school building. Who are the lifeline? Who are the connection to those kids and families and communities? Because I know we couldn't live without them And I know what they're really doing is is is God's work helping those in need very very good One last question for you. You mentioned you know governor Cuomo and president trump. We've seen with him. And you know even out here in California with Governor News some. There's of course a very much. A fractious political climate despite the fact. We're all trying to get through this together and a Lotta Times as you know and political struggles the people that bear the brunt of the The pain are the you know. The poor and the disenfranchised and the school kids who need those meals so while people fight over ventilators and masks DIS DISTASTE JEN youth. Do you get affected by these political struggles. I mean are you a above it or you right in the middle of it. You know I like to say that You know school. Buildings are truly the great equalizer It doesn't matter if you're a red state or blue state. Every single politician whether it be on Capitol Hill or at the state level recognizes that when we shut school buildings down whether it be for snowstorm or hurricane we risk kids lives by them not having access to food on those days. So what I would tell you is is that now. I say to folks because I if you're on TV regularly we can do a post mortem later on on what we did right and what. We didn't do Fast enough or what we should or could be doing. Here's the reality. When I watch people on television talk right now about one. Business is opening up. My answer is health comes first but I also my answer is is that when businesses go back to work. School buildings still remain closed. Kids still need help. And they're going to need help far longer than this pandemic and so in my in my line of work of having you know covered economies at work with pretty much the last four presidents I can tell you that you know. Put politics aside right now. This is about supporting our next generation. supporting you know kids in in rural and urban and suburban environments who need our help. And you would be surprised if you just look right in your backyard in your community There are tens of thousands if not millions of kids in need. And so what? I what I can tell you in all the conversations that I've had with our partners at the federal level our partners at the state and local levels. Everyone is rising up recognizing we need to do something. The problem is the need is so urgent and right. Now when I'm sitting here with a twenty plus million dollar deficit and requests that in weeks time could be fifty or hundred million That's what gives me Harper and we need everyone collectively to put their heart in their hand and figure out how we can help these kids how we can help these frontline workers and schools and put politics aside and recognize that we don't want any parent any caregiver in the United States waking up wondering will I be able to feed my kid the next day. It's amazing work being done of course And using your experience in your celebrity to help. We've been speaking with. Alexis Glick the genuine. Us Bank stadium because when you think about the NFL shifting to a virtual off-season that is going to get underway and five days even though the team facilities are closed indefinitely. We're wondering if the NFL. Of course we playing in front of them to stadium as well so the timing of the shutdown and sports has affected everyone but football and there could be no games played. We hope that's not it. But what about no fans kirk cousins said on? Espn honestly we practice every day in an empty grass area and pomp in fake crowd noise for away games but more often than not. You're used to it. Oh Ta practices. Don't have a lot of pomp and circumstance to them so honestly to just go out there and play. The game would be kind of refreshing a breath of fresh air to just let us know that we don't have to have all the smoke and the fire. We can just play football so long as we'RE PLAYING THE GAME. I won't have a lot of complaints and hopefully if it's still not return to normal we can find a way to make it work interesting. Not only does he say. No fans of be refreshing. He throws in a breath of fresh air just in case. We didn't really know what he meant by refreshing. Okay he just wants the football and the field competition at sort of like Mick shrimp in the second spinal tap drummer to spontaneously combust. He said sex drugs and rock and roll he said if I could have the sex and drugs I could do without the rock and roll so needless to say not. Everyone is going to share her cousins views on the matter and of course it had to come from somebody. Call them weird because he's not weird but he's always sort of had. And he's here to talk about how Kobe nineteen has affected. Our court system here in the United States but Before we get to that James. Your novel acts of Omission from Simon and Schuster is GonNa come out in paperback on June Twentieth. And this is a novel but correct me. If I'm wrong this is kind of based upon. Do I call it a historical novel on a case that you had right? Yes it's Loosely based on a trial had back in the eighties When there's a young lawyer I pick on Sued actually for legal practice. Must People consider the most famous lawyer in the country? Chris Books Highly fictionalized version of that. But it's it's That's the bones of it do you think. And you're a bay area guy like me. Are we truly the most litigious state in the union or is that kind of overblown? Oh I think that's overblown. I think it's easy for people to say things like that but every time a person calls me and talks about some devastating thing. That's happened to their family. The first thing they say is I never thought about saying I never I WANNA sue. I don't like the idea but you know our family is. We can't make it. We can't survive. What's happened to us? I know I think most people don't like the idea of a lawsuits It's you know it's it's distasteful to most of US heck. I'm a lawyer. I don't want to be so people you know. I think. Also people take a broad paintbrush to lawyers and they'll take you know like a malpractice layer like you and think that you're all ambulance chasers and you know you're just trying to get punitive and compensatory damages for anything you possibly can to make yourselves rich. That's sort of the stereotype rights. That is stereotype. Actually that was what motivated. Direct the book because I wanted people if they wanted to have a fun time really to but it has a little romance and a little fun a little danger itself like that but also get a real feeling for what a lawyer actually goes through trying to figure out. Should I take the case? What if I do take the case? What are the risks on my God? I'M GONNA have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars And you know if I if I can't be successful for this family. They're going to be devastated in. I'M GONNA go bankrupt. You know so. It's not quite like people think Is is fun to joke about but in reality People out there trying to take anything that comes along or are usually going to have Economic disaster was there any point in the book? One of your characters maybe a dumb guy and you had a friend say that supposed to mean me. Hey yes that has happened to me if you times and people who read the book and there are some very well the characters in the book that the folks have have fun trying to figure out who they are and and and some of them are very real some of them are totally figments of my imagination and some of them are fun combinations of people. Sure so. Let's talk about how we do. The process now of jury selection which is. What's the French word for that? I forgot idea that's Vladimir so I've been on jury duties before what happens now. Did they doing it on skype? I mean we can't shut down the entire judicial system right. Well you know. Probably we didn't we didn't during any of the world wars and we didn't during the We had shut down the judicial system if they do this assist essentially ground to a halt The Supreme Court is not hearing cases the US Supreme Court The county's all over the state Here are taking different approaches to it but most of the judges are home. Shelter in place I can't get a case to move. Every jury trial in San Francisco was moved down the road ninety days. And that's just for the moment we can't pick a jury right now. People can't sit there close to each other and it's to think about you know as we come into a normal. We're not just GONNA suddenly be able to go back to life as it was. So how is that? How ARE WE GONNA? It's civil cases are one thing that's just maybe a family with a terribly brain damaged child. That's been waiting years to get the court so they can maybe maybe have some economic security and get some help now the life. That's that's a civil case. Criminal cases however always take precedence and the criminal cases because they have a right to trial by jury and they have a right to a trial a speedy trial and that always used to be weighed but defendants. Because they'd rather delay right now they don't leave it now. What are the court's GonNa do? They got us a bite him a speedy trial when we get going again. All those courts in the state are gonNA be taking care of that backlog of criminal cases and how are they going to pick a jury? Am I supposed to stand on criminal here but I think a lot of juries and am I supposed to stand up and pick a jury with a mask on my face masks under jerseys and I can't even see whether they're smiling at me or or or sneering I don't know I can't get a sense of it and that's if I'm push enough to see them with a mask on what if they're TV? What if I'm having to pick a jury you know In a in in zoom you know maybe it's Maybe that's all of a sudden. Tv has come into our programs. It's a very strange thing You know when we we try a jury case jurors get to sit there you know. They're all from all over the community and they put their commonsense together commonsense decisions. That's what's the beauty of the system. People don't want to sit there and spend their time but when they get a chance to actually do it they usually find. It was a fabulous fabulous experience. And how are they supposed to do it now? They can't talk to each other when they can't see the witnesses when they can't get up close and personal you know. I don't know yeah a couple more questions. For Attorney James Boss Swick author of acts of emission. You we always hear even before this that there's a backlog of cases. How many times have you run into the person who said look? I know the Supreme Court has some pressing issues but the injunction on my neighbor's barking dog. Hostile take precedent over everything. In fact I insist on it. Well they can just all they want. That doesn't need the court's GonNa listen any more than the listen to me if I've worried about some cases of minded really really should have you know maybe I have a lady. That's a dying of cancer and she's only got a few months to get a Taser The courts the best they can and they're way underfunded in our system and now unfortunately but everything has happened. They're going to be more underfunded. The courts are doing the best. They can But the guy the ones that adjunction for the dog barking and you better tuck his neighbor and get a bark collar. Well I know you you you know. Everybody needs that. They don't need to step up but it's nice to see people step up the whole. Think Globally Act locally. Whatever you can do to help even if you're just checking in on a neighbor but you're saying that lawyers can reduce the impact of cove. Nineteen in fact. You've identified six things. James yes well. There's lots of things that we can do. I think the most important thing we can do is all work together. You know to help everybody understand that. This thing is working and we can't just lead up on it I mean I'm sitting at home. I'd rather be in the office. I had been in the office for weeks when I go out to the store for my wife. I have a mask on and gloves. Kind of stupid. That's why we're doing so well in California and we can't i. I'm afraid we can't let up on it. Yeah we can all help each other and and the and the lawyers can help the courts and the courts help now. They need lawyers the US about how to process all this stuff and the lowest can help each other because although we're adversaries in fact you know we all are professionals and we're all What they call officers the court and we all have the same needs and they all have the same. Desire is to have the system work fairly our clients and they haven't worked smoothly and and not to have justice delayed. The old saying justice delayed justice. Have you ever been held in contempt of court? And if not what was the closest you ever got no no? I haven't good Lord. I often pack a toothbrush in my briefcase. No I haven't but once in a while and and rarely do this because of the judges the Master. They had the black robe and their charge. Even if you don't necessarily agree with doing once in a while you just have to disagree and once in a while you have to say and I come close a couple of times. Thank goodness not very often. 'cause most judges you know are have been. Smart. That's why they're there. They know that they better listen Because the lawyers job is to help their second stake. Have you ever thought about being a judge or you? Don't WanNA take the pay cut. Lord you know I. It would be a pickup. That's true I don't think they're paid nearly enough for what they do. They work really hard I if a lot of stress They have they have to make decisions. That Wannstedt not easy job People take well the power thing you know. They have a lot of power. Yes that's true but with the power goes to the decision making and people's lives are GonNa depend on what you do I don't envy that and And I respect what they do last question and I'm sure prosecutors and criminal attorneys get this bar threaten you like? Us Ob ruined everything for me. I'll have my revenge that type of thing. You hear that some other lawyers. No have you ever heard that from anybody in your career. Why I I've I've heard it. I've seen it on the faces. People have process examined circling And you know when things haven't worked out well for the attendant But no because that's that's the beauty of our system. It is a balanced system. Everybody gets they get their shot. They get their chance. And and and probably that's the only weakness in the system is that people don't have as much you know we have legal aid We have You Know Public Defenders. But they're way underfunded it. We really we need healthcare but we need to find the the safety net in the judicial system and the justice system for the people that can't get access that really needs to be funded and that has to be a. I think that's critical You know that's something hours on. Yeah no I hear you. We've been speaking James. Boswell make sure to check out his novel. All over North America and the American forces radio network worldwide. It's great to welcome to the show former astronaut. Mike Massimino and he's here to talk about the science channel is going to have a really cool thing on Sunday at eight o'clock Pacific and Eastern as well. It's called Hubbell thirty years of discovery about the Hubble telescope which Mike worked on and he also has a book called spaceman. The true story of young boys journey to becoming an astronaut. Mike thanks for being on the show. And I remember you know and I was in college and Letterman joke. About how the Hubble telescope they paid all this money and it broke and I guess one of the mirrors was off. Just you know Infinitesimal Amount. But everything was blurry and we had to go up there and fix it and I guess on the one hand it was a disaster but it also showed that you know people could go up there and actually fix. It was a great challenge that was overcome. So what was that like for you when you got to go up there and work on it Thanks for having me. I really appreciate that. Yep in speak with you on The What you describe as what how? I kinda fun house in Graduate School when When the Hubble was launched in Brickley discovered that it couldn't see very well and was a big embarrassment for the country I could attack the taxpayers. Who paid for the NASA specially was kind of under the gun was very looking forward to what it would show us and it didn't really show us very much in the visible light spectrum. Couldn't see very well because as you said there was just a an aberration. The MUIR was off just grounding correctly. Big Mirror that is needed in in the telescope to to to get those images and it was less than the size of a human hair with. That's how small that aberration was the manufacturing problem but it says really caused a terrible effective consumer very much with the telescope and also the regret. I repair mission Happened three years after that first launch and they basically gave the telescope classes they put in an instrument that could refocus the like just like glasses refocuses delight or contact lens. Refocuses the light correctly into your eyes. You can see correctly if you're nearsighted farsighted and Work Great and That was the first story submission. There were four more following. I was on the final two of those so you mentioned that we heard about this. Well before it was with NASA about the telescoping its problems and and it was fixed and that was a great a great victory on a successor NASA be overcome that problem and then actually be involved with. The mission was pretty cool for me. Yeah and the whole concept I guess was for lay. People is that we can only see so much from our light. Buckets are telescopes on earth. We need to get beyond the atmosphere. We need to get something out there. And once it was fixed all the things they could do like three being dark matter but then finding out the age of the universe some. What does it thirteen point? Eight billion years old. It's it's amazing what this thing has brought in and for you fixing it. That meant spacewalking. I mean can you even describe what spacewalking like to the rest of us? Yeah it's It's the coolest thing I've ever done In what you're doing is getting outside of the spacecraft in your in your own spacer like you're almost in your own you really are in your own little space Spaceship because you're going to go out into the vacuum of space where there's no air no pressure high radiation micrometeorites possibilities And you need to be protected from all that in the temperature differences between Son and colder extreme. So you need to get comfortable. You get a sunrise set when you're in orbit Every forty five minutes go around the planet seventeen thousand five miles an hour. Now you're in your own little spaceship your spacesuit doing it and Any every every ninety minutes to do one lap at that speed when orbit and have visited some light and darkness. And that's where you get temperature extremes quite frequently every forty five minutes to go through a change but it says extraordinary the opportunity to get out there and be able to look wherever you want when you're inside the spaceship and you get to space. You look outside and see the earth and the stars. That's really cool. But then you're out there in that environment I would say a couple of things one is. Is that it In algae might be looking at an aquarium going to an aquarium with your family or kids and looking out looking at the FA- oh look at the pretty fish. Isn't that nice and then becoming a scuba diver you now? You're interacting with that environment. That's what I thought. Looking through the window spaceships kind of like almost like looking at an aquarium. Pretty and then when you go the space look you're interacting with that environment and then where we were at Hubble We were one hundred miles higher than where the shuttle would normally fly space stations at two hundred fifty miles up at three hundred fifty miles up. So we got to see more of the curve of the planet Which is extraordinary. Don't see it as much. But you see the curvature of our planet from that from that altitude and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Our planet is really beyond words to describe its beauty. I felt like I was looking into an absolute paradise and I feel very lucky to be here. Absolutely amazing and We're speaking with Mike. Massimino about The shell hobble. Thirty years of discovery is going to be on the science channel on Sunday. The Books Baseman. The true story of young boys journey to becoming an astronaut And by the way the micro meteorite you're talking like a space bullet. I never even thought about something like that. Flying around on going so fast. No matter if he had anything going at that speed you're gonNA know about it. And the Hubble itself Has Been Hit. And there's a a high gaining ten which is a a a dish like a satellite dish on the telescope has got a hole about the size of a golf ball that went through it. And it's been hit. We took off One of the instruments had a radio that was exposed to space for many years. I look like somebody had taken a BB gun to that. All these little impact craters in it so things get hit. You hopeful those things. Don't come when you're out there been so far. We've been lucky in that area. No doubt do you think it's probably I dunno fascinating that you're you might be more famous than Neil Armstrong to some teenagers. Because you're the first human being to ever tweet from space. Yeah. I don't think I'm more famous than meal. I mean yeah maybe pushing it there maybe you think of a few other astronauts yeah the tweets space it also has the connection with Neil. I'm sure I when I when I first met me along strong. The new astronaut. I asked him. Do you remember what he said on the Middle? You've heard what he said. Right is survey one small step for man one chine leap for mankind. And I asked him. I first met him. I had to come up with that. And he said I gotTa tell you to say that. How did you come up with that? And he said that thesis Mike and I didn't think about until after I landed on the moon and I said really said Yeah 'cause 'cause the finding land on the moon no reason to say anything and he told me what he use it as a as a teaching lesson he said. Mike you know this new to this business but you know you gotta stick to business. I worry about all that other stuff later and I said okay I got it and so years later. The first week from space and and people who've been press was asking what are you going to tweet and so I said don't worry about it until they get there and so that's what I did. I didn't think about until I got to orbit opened up the computer and I looked at the computer and I thought to myself. That was the worst advice I've ever gotten my life. I should have thought something I I started doubting my hero. How did he come up with that thing? There's no way he came up with that on the moon. I'm only pulled around. Its base. I can't think about the right. So I just blurted out. Something launch was awesome. They make fun of me on Saturday. Night live by kids like that. So that's part of yes. I was the first guy tweet from space. Take that you know. I'm sure yeah and I guess if it was a real tweet you you could be the first we put you up. You know you could put some good last question for you as you wanted to be an astronaut Your whole life. Did you ever have a moment like oops I actually am one like you know when the space shuttle's launching or you're outside you like you know maybe? I maybe I didn't want to be an astronaut after all or was it all just a gravy for you know it was a it was a cool job is one of the few times where like something you dream about. Absolute is up to be in a school. Better it's just awesome and I think you know being a professional athlete or doing things like you get to do a radio show or something something that you dream about doing then you get to do it being an astronaut's right up there. I just loved it but I tell you what I described this in my book When I got out to the launch pad my very first flight It was a night launch And so we got out there in about two or three. Am about three am. We arrived at the launchpad whole areas is clear because they put fuel in the tank just a few hours before they clear the area. I'd never been around a space shuttle. That was fueled before when I feel that. Everyone's kind of happy and a lot of people around once they feel that they they get everybody out there because you basically have a bomb sitting there a little bit too close to. Disneyworld so like everyone got it away. So it's deserted. Is Doc the space shuttle's all it up and ready to go all the support structure is now gone. And what you see spacious fueled and it's so coming off of it which is just water vapor but it's smoke coming off the top of this thing and because of those cold temperatures. The cryogenic eulogies very cold temperature fuel. It's like bending the groaning of the metal and the pumps. It was making these unworldly noises like it was alive and it looked like a beast and rick. That was the time that I thought after all those years about going to space. Since I was a little kid I thought to myself. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. So that's what that was the moment ice. No mainly should have thought about thought this through a little bit more. But certainly that's when that's when it hit me but by that point it was too late it was like I couldn't change my mind as I know. You gotta go great stuff and WANNA remind everybody. It's going to be a great two hour special about the remarkable story about Hubble and about how people who thought of it made it and people who worked on it like our guest Anne Mike Massimino. Boy I'll tell you that you want to go. I'm not it already. Thank you for that and welcome back to the show rectal with you all album round the you know the draft. Aren't you gonNA talk about lawyers? No no the draft I wanNA talk about the MLB mock draft to and some real strangers in there but there could be some surprises in the strap. In fact I guarantee it. There will be some weird surprises. Joe Boroughs going to be number one and then who? The heck knows what's going to happen. What do we know? That's the only certainty if the dolphins aren't convinced that to healthy and they might pass on him at five. We know things like that. But what about one where we all go would go and I think that moment will happen if Jordan love is drafted ahead of Justin herber. Now you might say that's not going to happen. His measurable Cz are off the charred. You can't even measure them. Apparently Herbert by the way has spent his entire life in Eugene Oregon and some people say wherever he goes it's going to suck 'cause he's GonNa be Homesick. I'm like that's really a harsh indictment on anyone who's never got out of their hometown the plenty of stars of stage and screen. That never wrote an aeroplane until they hit it. Big Is that but Herbert at the senior ball said that. Nfl team say we need more leadership from you. So if you wanted to get up the science kit with the Petri dishes and the Bunsen burners and the test tubes you could start saying Brand NEW CITY. The expectations of being a franchise quarterback top ten pick. And you have to be a leader is not going to happen. That's that's a bit much. It could be too much to ask of love as well. I mean love has had to deal with adversity for the entirety of this last season. In fact we only saw glimpses of his potential last year it was his twenty eighteen campaign that put him in this first round conversation last fall and so we all kind of looked at him and but listen. Both love and Herbert will probably have to city year. Well you'd like them to sit here. Like Patrick Mahomes like jared. Goff like whomever but there are going to be scouts. That are going to say. I know this guy that was in the PAC twelve and this guy was in the boonies but Jordan love is the guy to take. That could be one of the curb. Balls another one. I saw a rumor. That the raiders were going to trade up to take seizing Henderson. He's a good corner. There's NO DOUBT JEFF. Okuda will be the top corner in this draft and it's not even close as I said it's perceived value. We'll see how it all fleshes out but right now it's not close. It's him and then everybody else. He's the total package. He's they say stronger. Version a tougher version of Marshon lattimore. Who was also a Buckeye first rounder but CJ Henderson the number two corner in the class? Apparently it's not even close there so it's Okuda no one's close Henderson. No-one is close at three. He checks every box. He ran a sub four four. He had an amazing season as well. The big knock on him is that he can't tackle very well but he's great at covering well. I mean there are a lot of guys that can't tackle very well who are great wash and say a lot. But they're guys who made money Daryl Durell Rivas couldn't tackle very well beyond sanders couldn't tackle very well nominee couldn't tackle and he couldn't guard people either there for a while pulling the wool over All our eyes but you know if you see him go in the top ten the Jaguars had nine would be one if they decide to address offensive line in the second first round. Pick which would be twenty over. All the Panthers Take Henderson at seven. If Derrick Brown off the board we can even see the chargers pull the trigger at six but as I said these will be surprises. The chargers are to draft a quarterback. I said the That the raiders will trade up from twelve. I believe and I would bet money. That Henderson will be there at twelve. And I don't know if they take him or not but remember they got Trayvon Molin in the second round. One thing that Mike Mayock was saying he was addressing. The press yesterday was he says there could very well be a number one ride receiver on day two and he said in the third round he said we have thirty. Three third round picks. And it's like stealing. It's not like stealing when you consider that. The raiders have sucked and have given away amazing talent to get those picks wouldn't say stealing but he says if we do our job right. We'll get three starters. Well that would be tremendous if they could do that. The guy they're talking about who could be that person would be Michael Pittman who's rated as the Tenth Best Wide Receiver. But we talk about him. The same way we talk about Terry maclaurin. Aj Brown or decay metcalf. None of those guys were first round picks but they all play the isle outplayed and kill Harry and Marquess Brown. Pittman is six foot four. He makes acrobatic catches so he could be one of those guys. Let's go to Charlie and New York City. I got a couple minutes. What's up man? Hey be real quick I Regarding the draft that was looking at Latest mock because that's all. I have to do now during the day other than looking for zombies. Mel Kiper had the raiders taken Henderson with the Twelfth Pick and then and love with the nineteenth pick. He didn't have in taking a receiver. Maybe thinking that this is such a deep draft for receiver as they would take someone later on. I guess My question to you is regardless of who they I think they're gonNA take a receiver with it's called pick in fact nineteen to or love are still there and they don't take either of them and they go with Whichever a linebacker or someone else would you be disappointed. I wouldn't be disappointed You know in a perfect world I would have to take to overload. He's more accomplished. But I think Mike. Mayock was kind of setting the scene for maybe doing something like that and passing on a wide receiver on day one because I mean. Cd Lamb. Jerry Judy Henry Rugs Justin Jefferson. They're all GonNa go in the first round. But if you look at Brandon you got to Arizona State who I love. I just mentioned Pittman. The viscous Chanel. He might be a late first round pick but there's jalen Rieger Denzel mims Cagey Kamler. There's some great wide receivers in there. That could end up being that. Terry maclaurin are the decay mccafe. Jay Brown guys from Ole miss that it could be that type of thing so I was thinking if it goes to be their third round. Because raiders don't have any second context you pick someone of that ilk will be there in the third round for the raiders. Yeah Yeah I have no doubt I mean. They can package to threes to move into the second round if they really are. They're really in love with a guy but With three threes may says he wants to get three stars out of it. So it's going to be intriguing for sure. Charlie I gotta run take care take care all right good stuff. That's Charlie in New York City one. Eight hundred eight seven eight play. We have baseball going on right now in the Chinese Professional Baseball League and They were supposed to have their opening day March fourteenth and they moved it up to April eleventh and so it opened on Saturday and then it was postponed due to rain but we did get some baseball in on Sunday. So even with the delay the Empty Stadium and as I said the stands filled with. They're not sex dolls. I don't think mannequins The rackets and monkeys also had robot fans as well which I think is pretty cool. Is there ever been a team called the monkeys? Hey we're the monkees. Peter Tork Maki Dolan's and Davy Jones just pulled all four of those behind but There's no team called the monkeys. It just doesn't really work in America. That name but the rackets in monkeys even with that delay the game between China. Trust brothers and the UNI president seven eleven. Lions was a welcome sight. I think for baseball fans. But let's just go back. I already forgot how weird the name Chinatrust brothers are. Because after that I said you need president seven eleven lions chinatrust. I'M GONNA go out on a limb and say a bank but the brothers that would not work in America. Say Brothers Yeah. It just would not work. But it's not enough that seven eleven sponsors a team uni-president whatever that is both of them. Uni President seven eleven ham fighter lions and sell. If you want to take a closer look at ways Chi Wang Chang. An outfielder with they just call them. The UNI lions. He hit the first home run of the season in the first inning. And that means he hit the world's first meaningful Homerun in twenty twenty and it was off the foul pole which is pretty cool. Now kiling chain goes by Kevin because we look at it kai-wen Kevin he goes by Kevin Chang. A fun coincidence. The pitcher who served it up was none other than Arielle Miranda Miranda thirty one years old and he was a relief pitcher for the mariners. He was a starter for the Orioles. He's been in forty four big league games as era just under five The last two years he had been playing in Nippon Professional Baseball that of course would be Japan and their two leagues the Pacific League and Essentially There were you see a headline saying the brothers rally. What Brunner's CAL ripken? But now Chang's home run gave us obviously the unions one. Nothing lead but it didn't stay that long because the brothers tied the game and the fourth when Su Chen Chan provided own solo. Home run if I was Chinese. I want that would be my first. Name T. Z. You Hyphen H. S. I. E. N. Shin Chan Chan had his own home run and they tweeted out and a lot of of obviously it was in Chinese characters but in Hashtag brothers. Never give up. Hope you don't give up in the fourth when you're down one nothing but that long ball was also off Ryan. Fear of End Ryan fear ban the knuckleballer who pitched with the mariners the rangers and the Blue Jays. Now this is a guy who played in thirty three games. Ziara was seven point three or four in the bigs and I remember him very well because I was doing the as game against the mariners at the call. Siyam was a night game probably like a Friday night or maybe it was. Maybe it was a Saturday night games to be a lot of Saturday night games but I was doing the game and I told people that fear band in German is fire. Bent Bent is means evening. Fighter abend in German just means quitting time that means the work is over. It's just a catchphrase for no more work and years later. I saw some disc- discuss online. But I saw some kind of discussion. And somebody said well Rick tittle was the guy who taught me that fighter. Ahmed means quitting time. So it stuck with someone but you know they anglicized and so F E I e R abnd this fear so now I know Ryan File. Aubin is now. He pitches for the unions but defense matters because the game remained one to one in the sixth inning. Oh brothers don't quit. Do the lion's any base runner was going to be significant and brothers First Baseman Way. Ta Su didn't get the memo because he got picked off first base. What they really pretty back. Pick from a lefty as well done down by the Pitcher Chen. Chong you but the lions did Prevail Marathon Kinda eleven innings victorious by four to one and this game lasted four and a half hours. So that's the kind of thing like I can't wait till baseball's back. I can't wait till baseball's back you get two four fifteen in that game. You're like I'm so sick of baseball. That's like almost every raider game except for a couple of seasons but almost every raider game when they move back twenty five years ago now. They're gone again but I'd be so excited to go whether it was with my dad and my brothers around a credential whatever and I'd get there and we'd be down twenty one to nothing in the second quarter and I'd be like I wanna go home so bad right now. That's not every game almost every game. I'm like I hate it here. It sucks but it's just because mostly they were losing but baseball is back baby and that's a cool thing now the mock draft for remember rolling and a half five rounds and I was like looking at the baseball mock draft because and by the way. Mlb can push the backdraft from June tenth. Original Start Day to his latest July twentieth. The expectation is that teams will get at least one month's notice for the exact day they're going to have it and there is some hope that they will get to ten rounds but still five is the most likely scenario the bonus pools and the individual slot are going to be the exact same from last year and then players will only see receive one hundred k. Upfront you talked about that. They'RE GONNA get the rest of their bonuses. July first twenty twenty one July first twenty twenty two. So don't buy your own private island just yet. The draft was supposed to take place in Omaha to coincide with the college world series. It's not going to happen. So it's going to be held in secaucus at the studios mood susie cell. Look it's GonNa be hard but you know we have enough data. We need to find out sign ability and and those other things the GM of the Tigers said. I would say that we have a good history from last year to the present day as far as seeing players. I know we already have a full list of all the guys that are pertinent to the draft for us obviously like to see them play more but I would say if the draft were tomorrow. We'd be prepared for sure now unlike unlike a NHL and NBA. I should say there's no lottery just like football. You Go. And Order of the previous standings you can't trade picks except for those compensatory picks the Tigers. Obviously you lose one hundred eleven games and twenty nineteen and you have the number one pick. You're GONNA have it. It's the third time to try. It has had the top pick. They had it in twenty eighteen. They took the Auburn. Righty Casey Mayes. Remember Ninety Seven. They had it. They took the rice closer Matt Anderson. All first round picks are protected from a free agent compensation nowadays the teams give up later draft picks and internal bonus or international bonus money to sign qualified free agents instead so despite that the Astros do not have a first or second round. Pick this year. We know that my question is do the Red Sox do. They have their bonus money and their pool. Money ready to go. Yes does not have first and second round next year as well as part of the science dealing scandal the s but each team is given bonus pool Monday for draft spending each summer and the penalties for excessive. Spending are harsh enough and what it is is tax on average forfeiting for future first rounder. And there's other things that go up but the bonus pool effectively acts as soft salary cap. So the five largest bonus pools going into the draft. Assuming it's five round draft Auriol's Tigers Tiger's royals marlins pirates and you would say you know. Three of those teams are either small marketing but the orioles and the Detroit Tigers both have over thirteen million dollars now. The old hold the Orioles hold the the second overall pick and if you think about and they have the highest competitive balanced pick as well which is going to be thirty because now the astros are out so By the way the Astros their bonus pool two point one million two point one million. That was another penalty. They have so you talk about Sign Ability. This might actually help the astros because in a normal year you like all my gosh whatever you WANNA do. Don't get drafted by Houston. Wait I thought they were the young up and coming team going to world series winning world series. Yeah but now they don't have any cash so you don't WanNa get drafted by them. So undrafted free agents the most. You can pay them to come to. Your team is going to be twenty K now previously. They could get up to one hundred. Twenty five thousand dollars so we don't know the exact date just yet but we know that's you know look amateur. Baseball is shut down the draft class. It is I hate saying it is what it is but it is not going to change. The player cannot change their stock unless they get hurt. Now I guess if you put a video out there where you're doing some guys do or they're you know jumping backwards over six school buses. Wow we didn't know athletic but all you can do now is hurt your draft status. You should be like Kobe. Beef and You know in a Hammock a net somewhere. Now tomorrow. I'm going to get into the mock. It's called about when to Resume College Athletics and one conclusion that was drawn on the call that the message was clear to Mike Pence. There will be no college football until students are allowed on campus. Bob Bowles the big ten commissioner said our players and students and they are students. If we're not in college or not having contests our message was we need to get universities and colleges back open. You need you're listening to wrestling observer life with Bryan Alvarez and Mike Vivey on the sports byline Broadcasting Network Meghan The show Brain Elber is here Wrestling Observer Live Mexican reveals wrestling observer dot com started beginning here due to the uncertain economic situation directly impacting them and other media businesses in the wake of the corona virus pandemic wgn's changes to their staffing executive compensation packages and more on. Wednesday news delivered to employees on a brief twelve eastern conference call followed by the company sitting at a press release in the release said. They conducted an analysis of operations over. The last several weeks identified some areas in which they will see short-term cost reductions and cash flow improvement those areas reducing executive and board member compensation. I guess we'll see which executives get their pay cut in which do not decreasing operating expenses cutting talent expenses third party staffing and consulting deferring spend on the build out of the company's new headquarters for at least six months and layoffs and furloughing a person of their a portion of their workforce immediately that includes. It says some of the talent roster. We're going on. I believe almost twenty five individuals between talented agents furloughing employees a suspension and work without pay for a period of time versus a permanent layoff has been a constant since the economic impact of the pandemic released started hitting the call itself said the last roughly five minutes with McMahon dancing several of the details above and then employees will receive text messages about their standing with the company. Wbz The chain. We'll save them four dollars a month or four million dollars a month. I apologize gave them a cash flow improvement of one hundred and forty million dollars. Mainly from the deferral and spending their new offices release also said the company has approximately five hundred million dollars in cash and debt capacity to help them manage through the crisis. I'm not sure if that made the talent feel better. They've got five hundred million dollars in cash and debt capacity to manage them through the crisis and meanwhile they act going on twenty five people. Now McMahon suspended operations of the XFL last week league filed for bankruptcy on Monday next investors call happens to be one week from now April. Twenty third in the wake of is announcement. This is the list and by the way I got to refresh this right now because I believe that there have been more since we started the show. This is the current list of everybody who has been released from. Wwe Today Drake Maverick. Who was scheduled to be in the interim cruiserweight championship tournament and apparently will still be in the tournament but he has been released. Curt Hawkins has been released. Carl Anderson and Luke gallows who just signed new deals big deals by the way they have been released. Luke EC. Three has been released. Leah Rush Eric. Young Heath slater so not all of three. Mvp will be winning the championship. Anytime soon. Eight an English Kurt Angle has been released. Sarah Logan Mike. Keogh to WHO has been there for thirty years referee Mike. Yoda has been released. Eric Rowen Primo epic. Oh Mike Canales and in terms of agents backstage Billy Kidman Mike Rotunda ironically on April fifteenth. Irs was released. Dave Finlay Pat Buck. Shaun Davey Scott Armstrong. Sarah Stock Shane Helms and Lance storm all either furloughed or gone from. Wwe Now people have been told that there is a possibility that when everything turns around they will be rehired but nobody knows anything. And so I think some of these names are likely to be brought back in terms of the agents. I mean obviously. They're running shows at the performance center and I don't think that when they open back up again you're going to need your agents if you're gonna run things the way. They used to run them so I wouldn't be surprised if many of these names ended up being brought back as far as the wrestlers. I look at some of these names. And Karl Anderson Luke gallows I mean they were out there on the Wrestlemainia show in the alleged main event just a couple of weeks ago and others I mean EC three dropped off the face of the earth and you know an English was doing commentary. I mean they're going to need commentators when they come back. Epica Primo. We haven't seen them forever. Eric Rohan I mean. They were kind of pushing that guy for a while so. I would not be surprised if some of these individuals were brought back but it seems to me likely that many of them will not be brought back so in addition all of that there is more interesting things going on so trump is met with a bunch of industry leaders in the sports industry and they are tempting to reopen the economy and so Dana White and Vince. Mcmahon are among those that will be involved in trump's great American economic revival Industry Group. He joins a Roger Goodell for example from the NFL and Jay Monahan of the PG but what they are going to do is attempt to find a way to reopen sports and reopened the economy. Part of that involves Dana White running shows in Las Vegas starting in May white issued a statement of righty saying. Ufc plans of producing fights out of its apex facility in Las Vegas. Starting in May I presume he is just just presuming that in fact at the end of April Las Vegas can open up again. I don't think there's any guarantee that Las Vegas is opening up again at the end of. May but he seems to think it is and if not he can go to Florida which has been opened up to professional wrestling mixed martial arts. Basically any sport that has national television is now considered an essential business in Florida. So what is interesting about that is if I could find it here. Where are we here as you find that I'll go ahead and add the ES GOP Unsurprisingly Maria Analysis? Now Murray has been got at her with Mike Bennett. So okay so I'll find this year but there's been an invest at an investigation is the right word but obviously when this whole thing came about where. Night so mike and I were debating whether this could fall any lower and in fact I was spot on Mike virtually identical to two weeks ago the show one point one nine million of viewers lowest in modern history by the previous record. One point nine two million for the go home show Wrestlemainia this now. Two weeks after Wrestlemania one point nine one million viewers. What was amazing about this number? There were two amazing things about this number number one. Every hour did less than two million viewers. That's the first amazing thing that I don't think that's ever happened. Before the second amazing thing was they had how this rating held up is why I think that this is the bottom of the barrel. The first hour one point nine nine million the second hour point nine one million and the third hour one point eight three million so they barely lost viewers over three hours. And I know that Dave believes well. You GotTa look at. What was the lowest third hour of all time? Because that's the bottom of the barrel. I don't believe that because that final number in our three is people who watched and they slowly gave up throughout the show. So what happened here was people started and this is the bottom of the barrel and so they watch and a couple of people tuned out the two now they fell asleep whatever and we ended up with a very very stable number so I guess it could fall a little bit below this but I think that this is. This is the number of people that are going to watch W era during a pandemic in front of no fans. I I disagree but not vigorously just because I tend to lean a little bit more towards Dave on that one in that I think it was like one. I can't remember. I had no around Christmas time. They had a third hour. That was like a one six and look as long as there's a bottom on a barrel there's never the bottom of barrel until it completely drops out and you see zero so. I know what you're saying. But what if next week it starts around one point nine million one million like the second week and then? Paul is a one point eight and then follows the one point six. This could continue to slip especially if some news breaks on Monday. So I'm not saying I'm like I'm not putting this on the quality of the show even that like well because what? They're putting on his so bad in front of the empty arena. It's going to continue to nosedive but there's other factors that I kind of consider into play here on top of the fact that they just keep slowly atrophying and and falling away with this number just because they are getting down to the absolute nubs as far as what they have is viewership spurs says Crazy Finley and Kidman. Were both there since the death of. Wcw that's right. There are a lot of very longtime employees and independent contractors here have been released and like. I said there's no guarantee that these people aren't going to be brought back because I mean they're going to run shows again someday and they're going to need agents now one one detail here. Is that before all of this started? Before any of this hit they had already drastically reduced. The number of how shows so drastically reducing how shows than there is a chance that some of these these agents producers they will not be brought back but when the when the country opens up again and people are flying all over again and W is running shows in different locations. They are going to need agents. That's how they run business. And so you know I have people asking right here always is Lance. GonNa come back to the site is is is Jerry. Do Twenty two straight podcast now with these people. I don't know if all of these people are going to be going out there and doing a whole bunch of interviews and doing whatever for two reasons number one my guess is that many maybe all of them are GonNa Have Ninety Day. No compete clauses. And I don't think if you're doing your ninety day no compete. You're going to be rushing out to be doing interviews or anything like that and also I mean this is. This is what happened when when. Wcw went out of business. I mean a lot of people. Just they stuck around and they kept quiet because they hoped that they were going to get a job with W and it was like that for several years. And you know everybody knows the rules and my guess is that many of them are going to lay low and they're going to hope that you know three or four months down the road maybe by the fall maybe by Christmas time w e will start hiring all of these people back again. That's that's mine. I think some of them will be hired back but as I noted their names on this list that promote EPICA I mean. When was the last time we stop Freeman EPO? I mean it's been years so my guess. Is THEY PROBABLY WON'T BE BROUGHT BACK? But given how much and I don't know the exact amount okay but gallison. Anderson signed a big money deal and a lot of people reciting big-money deals because w e didn't want anyone going to aid. W and so. I find it hard to believe that when things opened up again. They're not GonNa want to hire these people right. Back Zack Ryder. You can now add to that list to officially joined the list of people who have been cut and you know guys like Pat Buck especially you know who just got hired by them. Not all that long ago to be a producer. Yeah and the producers. Because how they're going to do business probably philosophically with. Vince isn't going to change. So you're GONNA have a lot of producers and things like that and also you know it shouldn't be forgotten even though we're going through all these big names that are on this list. How many production people? How many of those independent contractors that you name that do piece work for them and those sorts of people who don't have the big names are going to be out of jobs and be furloughed and be outright cut loose and that's something also we should remember with a lot of these names that are coming out to that are being bandied about where they. GonNa get job. Where's this person? Getting land boy is a whole lot of other. People are landing spots to. Who Don't have these big names? This person years says simple question with wrestling being declared an essential business in Florida and Awa open to working with available talent. That is close to them would awa taping and Jacksonville and bringing some of the recently released. Wbz talent with some of them also residing in Florida or is alien planning on taking advantage of the essential business ruling lay W is taped through the middle of May so I guess if they wanted to. They could scrap all of those tapes and go back and go live but. I don't think there's any need to do that. They're not seem to be any problem. Between TA W in terms of live versus taped. And obviously one of the main reasons that Vince is going live Monday Wednesday Friday. Is this belief that has not been confirmed that if he does not go live they're going to lose out on their television money and I I mean there was no mentioned this on on the conference. Call or anything like that. I mean it's it's all speculation and as I've noted I mean a w seems to be doing just fine with tape shows. You know if if Florida opens up and all of a sudden Awa was going live next week and they scrap all those tapings then. Hey that'd probably be an indication that TNT wants them to go live but it doesn't appear that that is the case now come may fifteenth. It looks like they'll be able to tape in Jacksonville or wherever. And whether or not they use any of those W stars. I don't know as I've mentioned a a million times. You know the Kahn family owns a w but contrary to some people's belief there is not an ATM. Eric this is not. Hey we have. We have unlimited money to sign every single person that we want to. Hey W is working on a budget and they are not going to exceed that budget. They're going to stick to that budget. And yes they will have. They will have room for some people but they will not have room for everybody or even most people and they're trying to run it as a business with the goal being to make money off wrestling operations and the way that the business set up and with the new TNT DEAL. They will be making money off wrestling operations most likely by next year. They've they've they signed a new television deal. They've kept within their talent budgets. They haven't had a cancel house shows because cove in nineteen because they never ran. How shows They'll they'll probably be taking. I mean they're taking a hit on live gate for television every week but I mean they they appear to be doing okay right now. I mean that could change anytime but They are. They are trying to run an operation that can make money off the operation and not you know rely entirely on. Wbz's not relying entirely in Saudi Arabia but that Saudi money is big money and losing out on that Saudi money. I mean the last time there was an issue with that to stock. Took a huge hit. So anyway we gotta do break back in a moment with the eighty e w world heavyweight champ defending his title tonight against the big hurt Jon Moxley Wrestling Observer. Have you been doing that if you've been watching it or have you been doing something else and then watching later? How is this all been working out as far as the schedule in going back to watch the show? Is it something you do every week usually have? How does that work especially right now? Support like I'll watch anything that's on. Tv Man frigging raw data view. Whatever I know W. I duNno Florida's L. O. Watched sit down and watch it. You know so acts like a just a tad emptier anything south so like we've all been trying to figure out how to do this the best way right and to figure it out and we'll try and different things you know. There's there's no stands that takes energy of the arena which is critical elements. And throw that thing away so a lot of people they leach duty cinematic approach. We've seen so it's about yard match and stuff like that In his message ager you know deal. This is a match at a lot of goals. Kind of going into this thing. We wanted to accomplish with it and I wouldn't the opposite direction of some of the bigger massively seen lately Starts trying to hide the fact that there's no crowd and doing the cinematic approach and using different camera angles and tricks? I decided to go the opposite direction as that. Make it like not so much like it's an empty arena like. Oh we're live from the beautiful place former senator or whatever in China like an act like the people in the building like 'cause he lets you like holding it built up and there's nobody building or looking around when there's no fancy look like an idiot so I was like okay. Let's not pretend there's people in the building but Megan anti arena not because there's a pandemic going on but because the Nagara got an issue all right. Let's meet somewhere. Let's settle it mino email just like we want we on each end the waffle house. Nobody's there nobody's there to help you. It's me and Hager Manoa model. There's no ring announcer obvious. No fans only other person in the building where he is not even announced there. There's no photographer as it's just. Mono Mono and strip away all the extra stuff and just wants to fight and that's what I think I think we would find out tonight. I will say this. I've been in some stiff masses this year. They you know brutal and stiff. Hard hitting This one takes the cake by far. I was screwed up for days. My face was swollen up in purple. Here swath up like double aside like cauliflower. Here I shipped choose pretty certain that broke my ribs there in the match. That didn't but that was pretty confident that broken ribs for the duration of the match. And if you've ever wondered what happens when you never professional wrestling match with professional and then they fighter who at the time is currently in his fight champ? A heavyweight no less. Well I'll tell you what happens punching a face there are Want to give too much away but now another thing I really wanted. Ah The competences show. Jk Her in a different light. He's he's one of one in eight of we don't have either different thing. We don't have anything like it on Erica in a ever made Undefeated and he's a free of an athlete especially right now the way he's training USC in Jordan thirty pounds. You'll see men only given too much late in the match. And then you'll be insane states and Tonight it's just about like you're not trying to get it anyway. I mean it's like mean haggerty didn't talk. We didn't said more than a few words to each other before they went to the ring. And and hopefully my all the physicality and stuff will be stopped by the audience. I don't fans of wrestling and combat sports and give me entertained during this horrible and you know you had done one of these video packages and you made some comment offhand about. I've never been hit as hard as I've been hit by by I guess it would have been Jek swagger at the time but I believe that I just look at this guy and I can absolutely believe that now you have done some Eh may training I mean how much editor of Zama Maior grappling or whatever you've done but how much have you done In we're at extreme now Can't right now say my garage. But it's an extreme petur. Do different stuff. They're mostly submission grappling. I started doing She's just doing and smissing playing in like two thousand eight was don't try and pretty regularly for a long time. I was doing those. Naga tournaments like grappling tournaments and What's I started? Really picking up steam on India's travel and live in Cincinnati anymore. It just kind of fell. I have always tried to like off. You know train regularly because it's just it's fun you know scrambling start and but like being on the road with so long. I was trying. I was GONNA create conservatives place a few years ago I was trying to always get in there like on Wednesday on my day off but over the years just getting beat up got it like if I have a day off. I can't be getting beat up on my day off too so last but it was the first things I wanted to like. Add back into my life consistently time so you know I noticed you had a while back. I forget it was against but they did something off the top and you caught him in a rear naked and that was the finish and I thought that was rather interesting. It was who that's right. Sammy. I thought that was an interesting finish right there. I mean was that kind of one of the things about about new Japan. That kind of interested you the the style of wrestling where you know. It's a little more shoot oriented. You can do more of that stuff than you would do it for example. You'd never do that at show. I don't think but you know there's the opportunity to do some of that stuff on a percent. I Lo- I like I like my wrestling. To be kind of sports oriented violent oriented Like I don't like as much mass as where I mean. I like all kinds of wrestling like when a guy is like. Well I feel like this dude is trying to entertain me like he's dancing. And he's doing a gimmick or something like I don't want that as much I want you to not even pay attention to me as an audience member and I want you to look at your opponent and tried to next him up. I want you to be trying to hurt him. WanNa feel like you're in a fight and not care what I'm if I'm hearing or not and then I get lost in a match like that. I think that's close to what you see with me. Hager tonight and that's kind of this kind of what I always try to bring. What's tried bring aws at mindset? Make myself staying out from the first match. That had he ws with Joe. And you know he's all like and I kinda tried to establish that right away you know he's like I don't care she'll be entering whatever and I'm like I. Did you say that I'll actually do it? I do not care like we'll be friends afterwards but if you sign up for last meeting hurry so I think to beat him. Put His seat tasks for no other reason than take. I'm showing you what's going to happen so never going to happen when you say stuff like that like I'll have to like you know what I mean so I didn't just beat him I you know and that's just the mindset I liked begins. You know like I worked up for matches. Sometimes what like I think I've legitimately eight like imagine with like William Regal? They're like she's Yuki before Matt's like I've convinced myself that I i WanNa Arches Guy you know 'cause I'm trying to like you know well that was actually one of the great things about this Zouqi match when you say you know. I don't care well you in. Sukey are two guys who don't care and you went in there and you kill each other and it was glorious and are there any comparisons that you have between this Zouqi match and the match tonight. Yeah in that. There's not really gonNA talking about beforehand. There's no plan anything. No spots US team in the message Zouqi and when fifteen twenty minutes or whatever. We didn't talk about anything and you don't watch back his offense consistent. I mean that's a brutal fight but when you look back and is like offense consisted of a sleeper and they dropped kids my offense consisted of a clothesline and add. And it's about like you know maximizing and telling the story and stuff like that you know all that crap that's cool to feel like light years join now. I'm like it's so I just love that thing. It's so much fun to just go out there and have different types matches and different stuff and like still satisfied with the piece of work at the end of the satisfy with like I was still trying everything name. 'cause there are entire story through eight weeks they didn't need 'em came up with the ideas around you know about like and then we just stood by the ring through some ideas out. How are we gonNA keep going for eight weeks and build and build and build it for the ultimate payoff at the right time and we have fun I still? It's called all that. And he took my eye out and I got deadly serious and then I had to go through all these obstacles and they brought in fashion and then finally to get the paper. You and it's just like peaked at the exact perfect time. When I got the paper view it felt like the work was like everybody loses because the way a story. So it's not like are they gonNA put on this or not or cause in years past and they just never wrestling state?
