Sec Media Days less than a two weeks away and one of the featured attractions in Birmingham will be the new women's coach at the University of Tennessee and we are delighted to welcome Kelly Harper to the scene here native daughter of the University of Tennessee coach great see you thanks so much for dropping by well. Thank you enjoy being here. We talked a couple of times including when you were introduced and I know that taking over the program story does this is not AH fulltime job. It's it's it's. It's a twenty four seven job. So how has it gone now that you're ready to get out there and finally started seeing the proof at released the results of your hard work right well. You can tell practices started. you know it's been a very fast paced five and a half months for me. We we've gotten a lot in but really the most important thing right now. Our team has been very receptive. They've been excited and they have given us a lot of effort in energy and I'm really proud of him to this point Co Tower. You're going to if you can't talk this early. It's only tober fourth. How are you gonNA. What are you going to be like figure? I'll get my second. We'll be much better in about a week in knowing knowing you're you're playing career. Obviously Your your coaching career. You are a hard driving coach and I would think that the any practice right now would be a challenge for these players well. We're trying to challenge them. I I think that's the most important thing when it's easy. This team's pretty good. We WanNa make sure that we're providing opportunities for adversity and opportunities for challenges every single day Eh to help make them the best that they can be at the end of the year. That's our goal. We want to be the best we can be and I think if we can get to that point. We'll be pretty good. This is a program that that everyone knows and no one more than you considering. You're part of the national championships played for the most iconic coach in the history tree of of women's basketball so you don't need a primer on this but I'm sure you could ask questions coach. When are we going to be back. When are we going to look like like the Tennessee vols of your air and so many others well the big thing for us right now is to go out on the court and play with great effort great energy and allow our talent to come through. Thank you have to have that effort in that energy. Every single day will be fun team to watch if we play that way more gradient radiant tough. That's what we're going for and then I'll be honest with you. It's just about belief if these players and future players believe in our vision which is national championships. It's going to happen it really is. We are very confident that it will. It needs to happen needs to happen for University of Tennessee needs to happen for this and for women's basketball basketball we knew showed up here to play for coach summit. Obviously the program was established but was there any doubt when when you stepped the court for the first time what it was all about. Oh no no not at all you knew what it was about. You knew the brand. You knew what the Lady Vols were. You knew who Pat Summitt was and what you're playing for and former teammate mom in town this week. Shimmy quilts claw not talked in we reminiscing about when we were high school seniors and we didn't know what it meant. We didn't know what winning a national championship entailed but in our ignorance it's we set as seniors and said let's win four National Championships. That's what our goal was and after three in a row we came really close. We almost got that one but you know you really have to have that vision and everyone back. Dan knew what it was and I hope that everyone now knows what it is got to bring back difficult memories but I remember that night and it was. We were all shocked as fans that you didn't win a four straight. That's that's just shows you really we. We really want me to try to talk about. I mean it's been twenty years being and whatnot watch it on television but it was never forget the the team afterwards there. There's nobody could talk because the expectation was to win every game right. There's no doubt and and I've been able to look back in that and learn from it. I've learned from it as a coach. Thank you have to enjoy the process. We got to the point where we wanted to win the national championship. That's what we wanted. To-do and probably did not enjoy the season the way we needed to get better throughout the year we were. We were clearly the favorite we thought we were going to win another one one and feel that pain it was it was really hard and it cuts to know that you were just short of something even more remarkable than we were able accomplish. There's almost same sad going back twenty years to accomplish as much as it's sad but it's also the expectations and that's really where I wanna go because even though Tennessee basketball has struggled compare comparatively irritably others programs would probably take the record here over the last couple of years. No that's okay. We're we're we're we're getting better but it's not enough and and I I would. I want to ask you about your players because you had good players. It's not like Tennessee ever has averaged right. No doubt we have some talented players in our locker room and you know they can go out undo some amazing things. I think we have to be mindful of all the details. We talk to them about the expectations again. We went three national championships in a row and we're a disappointing burnt team because we lost the third one the fourth one so you know. I think you come here knowing that you come here as a coach knowing that you come here as a player as a student athlete knowing that that's just part of it but you also. You have to be competitive if you're gonNA come here because you've got to be able to compete and wanted to compete at that level to where you're you're trying to bring home that championship. This is silly question but comparatively speaking seeking Is there a sense of urgency to to let people know that this program is back and we're or is there more of a okay. Let's switch. Let's take this slowly but let's do it methodically well. I WANNA go fast. Obviously wanted to happen tomorrow but I do understand that the process there is a process here. We have to trust that process and and realize there's not a quick way to do what we want to do. We want to do it right and we want to where we're building it to withstand future. You know we wanna make sure that when when we get it where we want it when we get it back that it's going to stay there and I think our players understand that our staff understands thing is it. I know fans are sometimes impatient. They want it now just like we do. I get I have no problem with that understand it but in the meantime I think we can go out there and play with like I said earlier. Great Energy Great effort in our fans will support US people talk about how great the SEC is but it was great back then too. I mean there were there. Were a number of times vaguely. Remember when you had. SEC teams meeting in the final four meeting for the National Championship still store happening right now. I mean it looked different. Maybe the teams are different but the sec back then was terrific best conference then. I think it's the best conference now. Hopefully we'll go out and prove that this year as you. You'll have the media days in a couple of weeks and I know that you'll do the same interview. We just got through doing go over and over again but how how big a part of this program is the branding aspect because this is this name blade evolves into an in Tennessee. Women's basketball is synonymous with the very best that I've ever played in the sport. I think it's I think it's huge walk down the halls and Tom home symbol in arena and you see some of the former players that played here and realize how big of a deal this program and those players are still pulling for you know they're. They're wanting us to win. You know they they gave everything they have with this program and they just want to see it successful as well so I think we again. We have a lot to live up to uh when you put that Jersey on it means something. It means something more than just your team. Just community were again representing so many others that came before us. We're representing some of the best ever to play the game pressure on on athletic competition comes from many different ways but it almost seemed like when when you talk talk about the the dynastic programs which this is one that that may be where the most pressure comes from because you don't want to see your friends who you played list. You're you're the ones you came after work came after you looking at you going. What are you doing well. I mean I remember when I was a player. We felt that for Ireland's is that that came in and told us they wanted greatness and again. I think there's always trying to go out and make them proud because if you are you're succeeding saving in a pretty high level well coach. No it has been just a fabulous time. We've enjoyed all of our conversations. We'll see in a couple of weeks at at the media days and I hope you have a voice by then. I'll get one by that. I know you can get one. Kelly Harper head coach of the Tennessee Women's basketball program. We are live in Knoxville and we're I'm not done yet. You're listening to the Paul. Finebaum show podcast welcome back or live at Knoxville and just a spectacular day fourth of October still warm but the football weekend has arrived and it's Georgia weekend one of the top teams in the country coming to Knoxville well. The Dick Story of this week in Knoxville has been the Jeremy Banks situation by now. You've heard the news and earlier today Sean McDonough came here. He's doing the game of our night for ESPN and he told us that coach. PRUITT had said that they were working with Jeremy Banks hoping that he would understand what went wrong wrong and then about two hours ago crisslow tweeted the News Jeremy Banks has been removed from the balls football program. We have caught up with with with Chris who is heading the Ohio State Game Tomorrow Chris. Actually time I really do appreciate it and let's just take it from the top. What what do you know in in terms of why this changed well first of all Paul Sanity Columbus for the game more and bigger with UPN on campus there this thing straight victory alma mater but not well until I know more. I can't really say I understand the decision. I mean I understand the decision Asian book but as we both know and you've covered this story all week what what what changed my information fall best best diner stand is Tennessee got more editions nation today Friday that there was something else out there another incident other information and culmination or when you combine with what happened back in September with Jeremy Banks that they felt like that they needed to move on and that's again I I know that's a little bit vague but I've had a chance to travel the chance to talk to people and it more information get come man regarding banks and maybe another answer that or something else and I think it's something that happened even before four or may have happened even before this last situation which happened. I think we could of Florida and the blue of that knowing that he made the decision that they needed to move on and remove him from the football team. I mean the the damage or at least the the uh the early damage certainly was done in doubt this is going to change things very much Chris but at least it wipes the slate clean. There's no way to really assess the PR aspect of this because it's been a bad week and ultimately Jeremy pruitt will be judged. I suppose on on his won loss record but does this change anything no. I don't think it does because you're exactly right. I mean these are the kind of thing that happened and a lot of programs around the country. When you're winning big. They tend to not be as big deal when you're not winning and certainly when you're struggling the way Tennessee has. It's an even bigger deal remember. We talked about this. The other day. He got a second year head football coach the athletic director. You've got an interim press it on campus eyeballs on on everybody and you know when you have these types of pr it you know it's it's not certainly the way you draw up. Uh I think in this case again based on the few people I've talked to. They got this information today. This is not something that Jeremy Pruitt or the Tennessee athletic art but based again on my information knew about it until the day when they got it. They said you know what we really. Don't have Joyce. We gotta move on and Chris. I know we're getting beyond what we know. We're speculating here but I would think in really interested in what you had to say that from the PR standpoint if word word had gotten out that there was more here than that would that would only mushroom a the bad. Pr that Jeremy Pruitt has suffered so I mean you you have to at least give the university credit for once they learn to this the expedited his departure right and I think that again bionic that's exactly what their thought process was all that this is something we need to do and again. You know coaches ever. They always give kids every chance they came in all kids come from different backgrounds and cultures but you also have look at this from the university's perspective from your football programs perspective and I think that's what happened here and you're exactly right. They got the information. They moved forward again. This is something they do before today. I WANNA finish up on something. We've talked about it. The the other day 'cause being in town and talking to some people that you would know very well in respect. I heard them echoing. What you would told me a couple of days ago you. Bet Jeremy Pruitt status and it just does seem like what Fulmer said the other day was was was obviously an in an attempt to try to tamp down but but I want you to enunciate a little bit more on on Pruitt because it almost doesn't seem as long as the off the field issues. Chris Chris are are okay that no more embarrassing events occur the Jeremy Pruitt is going to get at least a reasonable period of time well. There's there's no appetite there right now. Among the Administration Phillip Fulmer people that that Phillip Fulmer works for to make any changes with the football. I think they very much want to give him another recruiting class or to you know he's had one full recruiting class. The nineteen class this coming up. We'll be the twenty class and then the twenty one class that gives them three full recruiting classes plus a half class the C can this guy coach really not kidding coach all the Kennedy a head coach. Can you manage pro anywhere all the different hats that it takes to manage a program especially the SEC and have a team that develops that have players developed surround himself the right guy the guys that sit on your staff and as I told you we talked the other day Jeremy still he would tell you he's still learning all the job as the head football coach. I don't think anybody is one hundred percent surprise who is involved in that process in hiring because they knew what they were getting in a guy that would have to learn again as I said learn job to be football coach and that's painful. Sometimes you learn painful lessons and I think that's what we're seeing. Play out a little bit. They'll rocket up traveling to next. Week seems like it's one of those critical games. I mean hardly perhaps never in Tennessee. History has a early October game against Mississippi State been labelled able critical but we all know what it means at Tennessee doesn't win but how does either Pruitt the administration or or someone else. I don't know who that someone else would be. Try to calm the waters. Though if tomorrow is what most people predict it will be and the next week goes goes sideways as well well. I don't think you're going to hear a whole lot more Phillip Fulmer. I think he said his piece. stood behind coats said that he's our guy we believe in. I'm I'm not going to be the coach that chapters over in my life to sort of get that again. I never believed. I don't think you did either. There was ever any real possibility of that but no I don't think anybody there is under the impression that these next few weeks ago. It'd be pretty the way I look at Tennessee schedule going forward. Though fall is good as the League is at at the talk and it's very good for somebody is covered illegal long time of course you cover it long. I had with a nice way of senior. there was a lot everyone right now. There's a lot of teams the bottom. Lee that if Tennessee can improve and get better. I think you're going to see him. Make some changes. Grahn Ron mouth is going to be the quarterback tomorrow the fresh they're going to go with him. See what he can do if they can develop get better. They'll have some chances to win in some games you mentioned Mississippi. Stay at home. There's teams there in the latter part lock Tober November. Certainly the bottom east not look like a drug or not. I think we're GONNA find how how much this staff coats some of these younger players that have been playing probably before they really ready how much they develop how much they're going to be developed up and I think all Tennessee fans certainly the reasonable fan. Just WanNa see a better football team more competitive football t the second half of season. We've seen in the I am Chris. Thanks again. We appreciate it. I know it's not easy trying to comment on story while you're in transit but we've we've. We've strongly felt you were the best person and we know you are the best person on this story thank you we will talk again very very soon. Sure thank politics. Here are being crisslow. Joining US broke the story earlier. Jeremy Banks is done and again at this point. It probably doesn't really matter why he's done speculations all over the map but my best gas and that's all it is is visit. Tennessee discovered something else. It's hard to believe they would have just completely reversed fields after allowing him to play in the wake of this incident to suddenly they say you're. GonNa something else to come up. We are heading to a break. we have more guests up here. Cutting the head basketball coach of the Tennessee men's team. He only had devolves at number one in the country for most of last season he rick Barnes will join US shortly. You're listening to the Paul. Finebaum finebaum show podcast live at Knoxville and just a spectacular day fourth of October still warm but the football weekend has arrived and it's Georgia weekend one of the top teams in the country coming to Knoxville well. I think we're GONNA find out how how much this staff coat some of these younger players that have been playing probably before they were really ready how much they develop how much they're going to be developed. and I think all Tennessee fans certainly reasonable fan just want to see a better football team more competitive football t the second half of these. We've seen the first Chris thanks again. We appreciate it. I know it's not easy trying to comment on a story while you're in transit but we strongly felt you were the best person and we know you are the best person on this story thank you we will talk again very very soon. She would think politics here crisslow. Joining US broke the story earlier. Jeremy Banks is done and again at this point. It probably doesn't really matter why he's done on speculations all over the map but my best guess and that's all it is is Tennessee. She discovered something else. It's hard to believe they would have just completely reversed fields after allowing him to play in the wake of this incident to suddenly say you're. GonNa have to come up. We are heading to a break. we have more guests up here. Cutting the head basketball coach of the Tennessee men's team he only yeah devolves at number one in the country for most of last season he rick Barnes will join US shortly listening to the Paul Finebaum show podcast ask no one's been part of more first days of work than Carl Hart and in the same way rookies have to keep earning respect car heart never stops earning the respect of hardworking people like you from building rugged dear. That's tougher than any. I are worst day of work to reengineering the classics to outworked future. Trust your car hearts to keep doing their job long after you begin doing yours since eighteen eighty nine car hearts got your back twenty four seven visit car heart dot com forward slash. CFP We're back in Knoxville and we talked to coach Harper earlier and I don't want to take anything away from the football program but basketball AL ruled the winner here in in a big time way is the tendency evolves were the number one team in the country for a great part of the the the the winner and certainly made quite a run in the end up like Barnes with us the head coach and a couple years ago when we first started talking here I I ask. You I know I know you had confidence in your ability but in your wildest dreams did you think this program would rise to where it currently sits you know I. I don't know if I saw the way way we did it would happen but the facts of the matter is we recruited. Some guys were much better than people thought and they they worked really hard. They put the time I'm in and they start to believe in each other and we got to go on and but it's been great. The fans here have been great but those guys really did work hard and they believe in themselves and took us to some places. I'm not sure if people thought we'd get their quick and the story is is is well established but a couple of the right after the the the Celtics took grant Williams he came by our studio which is not too far from from his house and he went through the they're recruiting for about one hundred time but it's still remarkable. You still have to make that decision. You know desma. Oliver had known on grant when he was a kid. I was the associate assistant coach at UNC Charlotte and when they change the staff's there and we hired Desmond from there he knew grant and and he said all I can tell you coach is he wins. I don't care who he plays against. He is not effective and he wins and that's kind of what he's done. Remarkable and recruiting continues to go well no that's pretty critical aspect and I really interested in your approach because there are certain programs that that go one way and then Tennessee under you has gone a little bit differently when the one thing that we wanted to do was make sure that we got to kind of players that we felt would fit in with what we wanted to do here and how we wanted to play and and we we believe in what we do as a staff and but as you know as as you start winning a lot more doors open for you but we're going to continue to make sure that we get to Kinda guys that we think will fit with what we're trying to do with our culture here and and what we're trying to create eight and I've got a very experienced staff. I think I've got the best staff of the country. These guys know what we want and they're willing to go out and do the work and do be diligent about.

Coming up next
