Tom Woods here John. Moody is checking in with us. We haven't spoken to him in a while John. At the time we talked to him was executive director of the farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. He's a farmer homesteaders and leader in the local food movement and he started and has managed one one of the largest food cooperatives in the nation. He's got an interesting initiative. It's a conference when we're talking about toward the end of our conversation. But I thought I would catch up with him on what's been going on and with government food regulation farming all those sorts of topics and food freedom and all that he is the guy keeping an eye on developments. They're so John. Welcome back great. Thank you so much for having me. I've been meaning to catch up with you on what you're up to because you were I don't know maybe in a bit of transition the last time we spoke. What exactly is your primary work these days? And what institution are you with. What exactly are you up to right now? So so I've spent most of the past two years spending time with my wife and kids riding a couple of different books and and kind of catching my breath. After spending a number of years fighting the belly of the beast as they say so I just have my own small business. We started an elderberry syrup. Business Business As part of our farm that's been really really successful that we're hoping to really scale up this year. wrote a few different books enjoyed some time with my young kids as you understand. It's it's always like the challenge of a dad or like the time you most need to be working. The most to provide for your family is also like those. The critical years on your kids are small and stuff so so. That's really the big things I've been into the past few years. Well I thought in addition to this important conference you're putting on which will talk about in a little while you might update us on just the general topic a topic that you follow very very closely of government regulation add of and intervention into food and farming and the sorts of things going on that a casual observer like me would know I know about it is obviously. There's the big picture issues going on right now. Involving you know the trade war with China and you know how that impacts it's made out to be a very big deal in terms of its impact on American farmers and it is a big deal but it's only a big deal because the government mint already so messed up the food and farming economy in the United States in also if we hadn't turned everything from Ohio to Colorado into an endless sea of soy and corn. Then you wouldn't then have to be bailing out farmers whenever we get into geopolitical occur tough holes with other nations. So obviously there's some of that big stuff that people are aware of you know on kind of like the small day. Today level the FISA Food Safety Modernization Act is finally being implemented in. That had some really interesting stuff pop up. So as far as for instance it's been targeting from what I've been told by a number of different people in different states feed melts so the places places that have a lot of farmers especially smaller farmers who aren't vertically integrated or part of Tyson purdue and other vertically integrated operations These local feed mills. Where you go to buy feed for your animals and a lot of the feed mills now are both increasing pricing increasing zing minimum order sizes and passing things on to other local farmers because Bismah is in snaring and entangling a lot of businesses? That no one really imagined or new. We're going to get caught up in this new regulatory Schema and so that's is going to be really really interesting as they continue to roll out PHYS MMA and to see how like trickles through especially the alternative food economy since generally speaking you know when regulations head they say it's about you know keeping the big guy in check but it's the little guy who always pays the price talk to me about you. Were telling me about the cottage food folks and apparently the rise of this phenomenon seems to be irritating regulators. Why should that be yes so Yeah so you know just a few weeks ago and Louisville There is. I guess it's considered the nation's premier biggest just food safety conference and a couple of people I know went and attended and they were sharing how that came up in a number of different sessions that we know these people in the basically corporate food system. The regulatory food system really really don't like the increasing growth growth and diversity of the cottage food alternative that some different states have adopted in different ways. And you know basically so readers. Here's kind of understand listeners. Understand what we're talking about. You know usually cottage food is food. That's produced right in someone's home so it doesn't and have to be done in a certified kitchen You know it's not generally subject to state or federal inspection so it's a regulators laters worst nightmare because it something that they don't get to regulate and Edo different states have different things you're allowed to do under cottage food and because of the work of the Institute for Justice quite a few states have adopted much improved greatly expanded cottage food laws over the past five to six years starting to become a really viable way way to start a small business in a lot of these states but a lot of you know the regulatory people really don't like these laws because you know they to them at the city no the is going to cause a mass outbreak. Everybody's GonNa die if they can buy a loaf of bread out of somebody else's kitchen instead of buying it from Kroger Type Rationale Now so so. It's a very very interesting area because I know in the states that have adopted more expensive cottage food bills. They have seen an explosion explosion and small businesses. They can operate under those exemptions. which is you know exactly what you and I would expect because the biggest reason we don't have more small? All businesses in America is the barrier to entry if you have to go through a certified kitchen and all these other hoops and regulations you know. Basically makes it impossible for somebody who's wanting to pursue their dreams and their ideas. Let's talk about this further because I I'm not sure this quite qualifies qualifies but nevertheless it does call to mind something from my past about ten years ago. I was living in Auburn Alabama and there was a woman on my street who made the most delicious chicken salad you've ever eaten. I mean I didn't even like chicken salad early so I thought that I had hers and I just couldn't stop eating it and pretty soon. We were all addicted to it and then one day it stopped being produced and the reason why she got an a threatening less gleaning to for that she did not qualify to be vendor of chicken salad because she didn't have a kitchen. That could be inspected. You know all this sort of thing. Right she was making out of her home. So we're all having withdrawal from having no chicken salad. It was unbelievable. So what that wound up doing was causing her to decide to go into business have an industrial sort of oven and kitchen and so she started a chain that is now very successful throughout the southeastern United States called Chicken Salad Chick and that came out of her efforts in in Auburn Alabama. Being shut down and stymied because because she was just operating out of her own kitchen. There's there's no way anybody other than a competing chicken salad seller was responsible for having that letter sent to her. I mean that's there's no way it was that she made much better chicken salad anybody else but she did wind up having the last laugh as I say because now she has a crazily. Successful chain franchise is operation. But is that kind of like what you're talking about. Yeah we'll and and you know that's what like in a number of states because because there is so many people operating in grade a black areas one reason cottage food laws have been adopted is is to allow people to do with. That lady was doing so they can grow to the point. Where even though it's not pleasant And even though I don't think they're really they shouldn't have to. They can then transition into the full regulatory system once they reach a certain size and scale it because because there's just so many people going rogue and say I'm GonNa do this any way and hopefully by the time I finally get the letter. I'll be big enough at that point to to make the jump into this. Other system in non habit squash my dreams destroy my business. Let's talk about how how farmers are doing these days and let's start first of all with what do you think about the claim that the trump tariffs had this kind of boomerang effect on farmers that that a lot of people predicted they would have that farmers are selling abroad is that really having noticeable affect on their bottom line or wh- what what factors overall or contributing to the state of American farmers and what is the state of American farmers for that matter it will it are the first thing is is the state. The State of American farmers has been bad for decades. So you know. We basically had like three four bad decades with occasional good years in like American farmers as a few people have put. It are the ultimate welfare queens. It you look at the amount of money that the federal government funnels especially the corn and soybean growers through insurance programs and other stuff and it's just a flabbergasting amount of money to prop up a farm policy adopted. You know fifty some years ago and you know so when we come to today to this issue with the tariffs to how that impacts farmers you just Kinda sit here and go it like Nick. If we hadn't turned everything from Ohio to Colorado into an endless sea of corn and soy. We wouldn't have all of these problems alums every time we get into a geopolitical tough with another nation on and if we weren't using food as a foreign policy tool and eh away you know to influence into other stuff and if we didn't have this mistaken idea that we have to feed the world and we have to do it at US tax payer our expense. It is the problem with the farming issue. Is it kind of robes in you know geopolitics economics annex You know in foreign policy and so much else. It's just ugly. It's just sad the you know the the the rural the state of Rural America is a nightmare. I think it might have been the New York Times. They even ran an article basically arguing that like large. Large portions of rural America are basically like the new ghetto. They're just so economically crippled so riddled with drugs. Alcohol Kahal Havi unemployment and that's just the end result of thirty forty years of not just farm policy Assey but by A regulatory environment that has strangled all sorts of jobs out of America and force them overseas overseas to where they could be done. Competitively what do you think the. US government's food and farming policy. Ought to be. Oh I you know I like what New Zealand did where New Zealand basically figured might have been in the early two thousands where they just realized that freedom is the way to go for their farmers and they need to quit trying to subsidize and pick winners and losers offers and try and balance supply and demand. The there's an article circulating on facebook. Recently you know about how it Michigan You know the government forced farmers to let you know hundreds of thousands of pounds of Cherries wrought in the orchards rather than allow them to sell solvent because of production quotas and price controls in things And you know it just. It doesn't work. We should let farmers immerse end consumers build a food economy that will actually working. That isn't dependent on tens of billions of dollars of annual annual bailouts to make it happen and the New Zealand model was great. 'cause you to basically it was very wrong. Paul like where they realised the government Vermont had totally fudged up the food and farming sector in New Zealand and so they realized they couldn't just go cold Turkey so they provided a number of years of transitional services the farmers they said. Hey you know like in three years the welfare ends all this kind of stuff ends all this nonsense on census going away so you have three years of some supported programs to help you transition into a model where our government is going to be doing the stuff anymore. and now New Zealand has a really robust very successful very resilient farm economy and it's great and it would be amazing if America would do something like that but the special interests definitely do not want to see something like that happened here. Do you talk to a lot of ordinary reformers in the course of what you do. Yeah because we live in farmland in Kentucky And we raise animals so I buy feed directly from a neighbor her and tons of my neighbors farmers and on occasion. I'll go to the cattle stockyard auction sale in basically gets it drink like you know. Take a long deep drink of despair. at the at the you know the auction that happens down the road all the time Yeah so I get to talk to farmers both in my area and then you know I still get phone calls from farmers all over the nation when they're being harassed by government people and then you Ito one of the few things facebook is really great for is a lot of the group some part of on facebook let me connect with farmers and homesteaders all over the country tree basis and probably the typical farmer is not rigidly ideological. So doesn't look at the world through that kind of Lens. But what do they want launch. And you generalize. I don't think you can. I don't know if farmers know what they want anymore. the like farmer bankruptcies corrupt farmers sewage aid. I think the age of the average farmer in America now might be in the high sixties that might have even broken into the low seventies in no because very few kids Wanna go into farming when their parents retire And and so they. It's hard hard to say. Because farmers are not a monolithic bloc culturally at all anymore So it and there's there's a very big divide in terms of the farming community in terms of like those who are commodity growers who are caught up in the corn soy a commodity grain growing system you know versus farmers who are vegetable growers or farmers who are in dairy. Dairy dairy has just been an absolute catastrophe in the United States. Over the past. Couple years. I know like dairy prices have just plummeted plummeted. The organic dairy industry became a disaster. Very quickly It is I think the biggest thing is. The farmers are just so beaten up from again a decade after decade of debt and you know negative net farm income and just hoping that the government checks at the end of the year will be enough to push them back into profitability. You know I think most of them haven't really stepped back enough to think. Think about what would they want if they could get something different is. They've lived so long in survival mode John. I WanNa talk about your conference because it's full of interesting stuff and interesting people doing things that are going to inspire us. Because they're acting really boldly against a regulatory apparatus BARATA's that's that's very difficult to crack through their operating against a lot of entrenched ways of thinking and it's very inspiring so we'll get to that just as soon as we talked to the folks here here folks worry continue. I WanNa take a quick break to console you if you are like the typical. Tom would show listener. You have about Oh. I don't know eight hundred seventeen books somewhere on around your nightstand and you know as well as I do. You're never gonNA get all so how about this for a life hack. T. blinking dot com slash woods to start your free seven-day trial blink thinkest dot com slash woods. Let's move on for a minute now and talk about your conference. It's coming up in January. Twenty Twenty January twenty fifth twenty twenty which by the way is a guarantee. I can't be there because that's my daughter's tenth birthday but but I wish you the best. I've always said that I will never miss a birthday for Travel we'll reasons but or for any reason. That's that's true. If she were older than ten maybe maybe I would but The website is rogue food food conference dot com so rogue meaning in. What way are you folks rogue so this conference was Joel? Salatin ends idea. In about three years ago he approached me about it and at the time he was just too booked up to really pursue it but but basically it's the conference You know you can go to hundreds of websites hundreds of conferences that will teach you to try and comply the Ito to a jump through all the hoops to cross all the t's and dot the I's and try to reply with the ever growing regulatory state But but where can you go if you want to learn how to circumvent rather than comply and that is what this conference is all about. It is a a bunch of really really interesting people who I cannot wait to meet some of them in person who basically just like. I'm GONNA find a way to do this anyway anyway in I'm GonNa do it. You know by circumventing the regulatory system. You know so one of the people who speaking as a lady by the name of Nitty Bali and she's in North Carolina and from what I understand. North Carolina is just a disaster when it comes to free speech about health both in nutrition so my understanding is like there's a guy who had a really successful blog because he treated his diabetes. Like Akito Palio eleo type Diet and the R. D. Lobby the registered dieticians and stuff in North Carolina. They had the licensing board. Basically like I go after this guy brutally or giving nutritional advice without a license and so she is also in North Carolina and and she wanted to be able to speak freely about you know her thoughts on the health benefits of certain foods and certain diets and she also wanted to be able to distribute food to people. We'll Especially foods that the regulatory state often frowns upon foods like raw milk in unwashed eggs and all kinds of other stuff so she started a five. Oh One C.. Three Food Church so she took the constitutional L. Legal protections of a church in illegal format of a five. Oh One C.. Three and like mash them together to create an entity entity that thus far has completely stymied the regulators in her state. So she's gone rogue. Wow okay that's an example. Yeah A- another great. One is Comey's Davis WHO'S OUT OF PORTLAND. I believe she wanted to do local meat and to do meet in America if you WANNA if I wanted to sell you a pork chop from one of my pigs. It has to go through a multimillion dollar A. USDA inspected butchering facility and CAMIS realized. She didn't have multiple millions of dollars laying around to build a butchering facility. So she founded. What's known as I believe the Portland meet cooperative? And it's an educational cooperative that lets had stem do local meat without falling under regulatory purview. And it's just amazing like what they've done and what they're doing it. Oh Oh so so. The conference is going to be both practical and inspirational. And really were hoping conversationalist sense of we want people to come. We want people to see some of these really innovative models so that they will continue to innovate around the regulatory state date And and and come up with even other new adopt some of these options in their own areas or innovate new ideas that allow them to pursue their dreams and food and farming. And you basically as a way to push back so I'm very excited about you. He does some of the speakers and whether going to be able to talk about an in different ways you do different ways. They're playing ball it in the insanely over over-regulated regulated food and farming sphere congressman. Thomas Massie apparently is one of your speakers and he's a tremendous guy to listen to so it it definitely sounds like something that people with an interest in this and by the way. That's a big chunk of my audience will want to attend. So where exactly is taking place. So it's taking taking place at the Cincinnati Airport Erin Kentucky because the airport is actually on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River and so it's January array twenty-fifth it you know. We've we've tried to make it a super affordable event because we want a lot of people who have dreams of starting a small business in this area usually don't have gobs of money And you know the great thing is like Joel. Who dreamed up the event Holly faces donating food for the the event. A bunch of other farmers are right down to the menu. It's all going to reflect the type of food and farming economy and dreams. We have Bob So it's GonNa be a real good time. January twenty fifth the website once again is rogue food conference Dot Com. I'm linking to it at Tom. Dot Com slash. Fourteen seventy six. Because that's how it always works somewhat slow weekend we have got the star Cage. Show coming up on Sunday. December first. Duluth Luth Georgia. It is one of those house shows where there's two matches that you're GonNa get to see and the rest of it. You've got to travel to Duluth Georgia if you WanNa let's see for example. The new day versus the revival for the smackdown taking titles the dark matches the matches. You cannot see we have the fiend bray white versus Ursus Braun. Strowman we have Roman reigns versus King. Corbin Seth rollins verses. Eric Rohan Shinsuke. Nakamura Sammy Zane and the MS in a handicap handicap match. It's Shinsuke Nakamura. An Sammy's aim facing the MS. That's for the intercontinental title and the matches you will get to see on the W network which somewhat surprises raises. Me We've got the Kabuki Warriors Askin Kyrie Sane Verses Becky Lynch in Charlotte Bailey and Sasha and Alexa Bliss and Nikki. Crossover awesome a fatal four way. Women's take team title. It's a match that doesn't surprise me to get on this W we not special but we are also getting Roussev. I've versus Bobby Lashley in a last man standing match now. This is interesting. Because they've been building. This feud up for a while. Now if you've been watching raw unfortunately you've seen all of this and the idea was that this match was going to be at survivor series and then at some point as we were putting the car together I guess the realization hit people. My God. We've got we've got a raw five on five on five raw las mcdonagh's next t for the men got raw smackdown annex t for the women five on five on five that's between eleven and fourteen falls and then we've got the other three ways I mean there's just no room for this match and so the idea was well let's move this match to. TLC WE'LL SEE. Give it a little more time. Make it a featured match the TLC pay per view and then Lo and behold. It's just going to be on this stargate show so my guess is that what they're gonNa do is probably I would guess lawn interferes Lashley beats him mm and they build up to the rematch. TLC which I don't know could be TLC naturally middle hanging from the ceiling. But it's kind of interesting that the very first rousseff versus Lashley match and I realized they've done all sorts of craziness and stuff on Robert. They're starting with the last man standing inning match. And so they're starting with that and you're GONNA get seat on starkey which quite frankly it's a holiday weekend and I know about holiday weekends. There's going to be nobody. Nobody watching this show so I am very surprised that they're giving this one away for free on the stark eight show. Let's go to high may highway. Hey you're on the air what is going on. Let's get a good one here today going. Brian I think I was listening to your view on the men's organs match with and if you're criticizing some of the setup and I think I saw some of that in the women's wargames match to the IT started with canvas and Il and il so even though she's miscast as he'll she's like a baby face but either way she was supposed to be he'll and being cheered a lot but she was just trade title beating up category. The baby as like how else you're supposed to get cheered if she State of getting beat up like one one and then when the other he'll come then that's asks when she makes a Comeback Star storytelling wise. It didn't really make a Lotta seventy. GimMe Well Hi. Mary thank you very much for the call. Here's here's the thing if you WanNa Watch wwe and you WANNA look for Gotcha moments like. What did you think of a w an annex t this week who do you think in terms of show quality one the Wednesday night war? This see this past Wednesday. I really liked the Chris. Jericho opening segment. I really liked the Kenya. Mega Park match approach and I really liked the Jericho Championship. Defense Against Scorpio Sky in the main event with that said. Then this maybe a spoiler for tonight I'll make my decision after a review a bow shows in detail with vinny but I think that in terms of show quality. I think I enjoyed annex. T better are this week. So we'll do that tonight. On the brain of any show you can listen with a subscription to wrestling observer that calm no way W and x t ratings yet. They're coming up probably on a Monday. They do come out today which I don't think they will. Because of the holiday weekend they would be out at about four thirty eastern and I fully expect them not to be out until Monday. But we don't have those numbers but we do have the numbers for the he w e a backstage show following last week's episode that featured heavily promoted appearance by seeing punk Tuesday's edition of w backstage. HFS One averaged one hundred. Twenty one thousand viewers down from one hundred and eighty thousand last week and appearance by triple H was was the most promoted aspect from this week. Show and seeing puck was not advertise to appear this week's panel featured Rene Young Christian page the Mo Jo so Ana Booker T. The show drew a zero point zero five in the eighteen to forty nine demo placing being at one hundred and twenty fifth in the Demo for the day on cable. So I mean the good news. If you WANNA say this good news is they did crack the top hundred fifty. A preview episode which aired on October Sixteenth did five hundred and ninety seven thousand viewers and a second episode that aired after a special edition of smackdown did four hundred and twenty six thousand viewers. So couple of weeks ago November twelfth health the show did one hundred thousand viewers and the week after when seeing punk appeared it one hundred and eighty thousand viewers and had a lot of people going. Oh my God look how great this is. I mean. They've grown so much because of punk. I guess forgetting the preview episodes of this program did six six hundred thousand and four hundred and twenty six thousand respectively so when you look at it from that perspective underneath thousand wasn't impressive now. They did not advertise the important for this show. So I don't know how many of these hundred twenty thousand tune in expecting Siham punk. But I guess we'll see the next time he's on is is the show going to settle in around one hundred thousand. My guess is that it is going to settle in around one hundred thousand I think even when seeing puck his on the show. I think it's GonNa Average Round One hundred hundred twenty thousand and I mean if you'd have told me a year ago that Siham punk is is going to return to a show covering wwe wrestling. I mean if you want to argue to me show you can. But it's not as Fox show. I don't want to get it again but Peter told me that he was going to be a w e backstage show where they talked about. WWe With W stars on it. Everybody from Samoa Joe Triple H to all of these other people that have made appearances here on the show and its. Em punk was going to be hired hard to be a regular on the show and the show was going to average one hundred twenty thousand viewers. I would have been shocked but that appears to be the direction we're heading. I guess we're GonNa find out when he appears on the program again. Still a couple of these text messages. Here send your text text message to four to five seven eight zero seven five six six. This person says what a great friend you are for filthy saying. There's no wrestling on Thanksgiving when he was featured heavily on m. l.. WS Thanksgiving episode. Well I apologize. I mean and part of the problem is I. Don't get the in sports. And so anytime that I'm going to watch a male W I've gotTa Watch Him L. W. on demand so so to me Emerald W even on Thursdays I watch him L. W when I can watch him L. W. I apologize for that I mean it's it's basically was it's the same thing with impact like whatever day impact aired. I couldn't get the channel so to me. It was just on demand whenever I watch but yes there was Amil W uh on Thanksgiving on Thursday night and not only was filthy. Tom On it but filthy. Tom Turned heel. Can you imagine so there you go check it out. However you check out m. l. w. this person said the preview episodes had big lead INS and were not in the regular time slot so those numbers don't count the one hundred eighty thousand on F S? One was a good number stopped distorting the facts to prove your point please. These two there were big lead ins but there were six hundred thousand people watching the show the first week I mean when we do the raw numbers when we do the w numbers I mean I sit here and I say listen. You don't need to read too much into this but I don't sit here and tell you these numbers numbers don't count all of the numbers count. That's it the numbers count. Listen the ratings may not matter to you you. The ratings may not matter to your buddies. If you do a podcast you may not care about the ratings but let me tell you who cares is about the ratings F s one t and t the USA Network Fox these these these networks that are paying big money to me and to a w and presumably presumably to other promotions like M. L. W.. They care about the numbers. They don't care if you care at the end of the day if this F s one show if this F s one show needs a big lead in in order to do good numbers if this show drops to forty nine thousand or thirty eighty five thousand or twenty thousand then you can come on here and you can tell me. I don't care about the numbers Brian I just enjoy the show. Well there may the show for you to enjoy because the history of wrestling is littered with promotions. That I was told. Just shut up and enjoy the show. Just shut up and enjoy the show and then the show got cancelled and nobody can enjoy the show. So yes these numbers do matter hundred. Eighty thousand thousand is good for the show. But it's not that good. I realize it not a lot of people watch F S One. But it's not a blow away number. It's it's probably good for that time slot at ten o'clock or eleven o'clock pm on a Tuesday but that was it's just like I hear this from everybody about aws. And of course the W fan said the same thing about Annex T. Well the show debuted at one point four million. Now it's down to nine hundred thousand. Where are all those viewers? Well those viewers showed up for the first week and they were never going to watch the show. It happens with every show on television. The Brady Bunch enj reunion nine to all of those every single show a lot of people tune in the first week and they have no intention of ever watching the show again Dan. It's where the show settles in so yes. Siham punk debuted in a lot of people tuned in that first week. Do I expect the next time that he's on the show. which do one hundred eighty thousand? No I would be very surprised if it did. One hundred eighty thousand because that was the first week just like the first week of a w just like the first week of addicts t just like the first week of smackdown on Fox just like the first week of everything that was a good number and those people watched it and they have no intention of watching it again. So we'll see where things go from here. The spurs an ear says to be fair. I believe both preview shows rose had much better time slots I one had the lead in at nine. Thirty second hand had the smackdown lead in at ten. Yes obviously that helps but but but there were there. Were six hundred thousand people willing to watch that show with a good lead in. Where are those people? That's a big drop a draw from one point four million to nine hundred thousand or with the USA network in x t dropped from one point one million six hundred thousands of big drops. I mean we're talking to drop up from six hundred thousand to forty nine thousand. That's a big drop is one hundred thousand eleven pm on a Tuesday good for F S One. Yes that's good but that fourteen nine thousand viewers awhile there. Why are we arguing about ratings? See where the show ends up. I don't know where it's GONNA end up. It may end up at five hundred thousand viewers. I don't know oh but it got as low as forty nine thousand and then seeing punk showed up and got up to one eighty and then it was one hundred twenty thousand the week after and I would guess like a lot of people. Well I would guess that a fair number of people that watched the punk episode expected him to be there the next week I realized they advertise. It wouldn't be there in advance but like they didn't advertise on the actual show so we'll see what it does next week. Spurs near says looking at the like dislike ratio for the latest. NWEA W.H. Power show on Youtube. How do you see them getting momentum back in time for the pay per view? I don't think they're getting momentum. Back in time for the pay per view I mean and this whole Jim coordinate thing I think soured a lot of people on NWEA power. I mean that was a big one for a Lotta people and whatever you think about Jim Cornets I mean he was a very important part of that show. Now he's gone. They edited him out of a lot of segments on the show. I think it's soured a lot of people and we'll see where. NWEA power goes from here back in a moment observer. Live with Bryan Alvarez and Mike Semper Viva on the sports byline broadcasting network the show bright number as here wrestling observer live Gone Solo here today. We got to callers on the lying to those in just a moment. Go to my twitter at Bryan Alvarez. Two things first off are black. Friday specially full full month of wrestling observer dot com for just three dollars and ninety nine cents. Eleven thousand episodes thousands of observers full access to everything in our members. Number's area for just three dollars. And Ninety nine cents and the other thing. I don't do this a lot. But every day things on this show and they they end up on line and sometimes they're accurate sometimes not sometimes. They're like painfully inaccurate. And this is one of them so I gotTa jump on on this one because this story is actually going around for like three weeks now and I've kind of ignored it ignored. It ignored it but now it's like snowballing. So let me make this abundantly clear. There's a Forbes article here by some Fella named Blake just came out today and the headline is. WWe Is reportedly considering a mass release of superstars for early twenty twenty. It says here according to wrestle. Talk quote quote. It was reported a few weeks ago by Bryan Alvarez on wrestling observer radio that he'd been told that wwe could be considering releasing a number of wrestlers while this is yet to take place. The latest rumor making the rounds is that it could be happening in the New Year ahead of royal rumble and Wrestlemainia season and quote. I never said anything approaching that if I recall correctly the day that Eric Bischoff off was fired. I said there may be more to come. I never said the word releases I was talking about regarding the Eric Bishop Bishops Situation. Who was going to be placed where on creative shuffling things up in the back okay? Somebody took that quote would end in brackets in brackets. They added the word released which I never said. That story story went out and now like a game of telephone. The story has turned into. I have reported that between Royal Rumble and Wrestlemainia. There will be a mass us. Release of wrestlers. Never I never said anything approaching that so hopefully this blake. Fella can take this down and anybody anybody else who's taking this and writing stories about it from Forbes quoting wrestle talk which I don't even know where they got their story stop. I never said Dat holy smokes that control now all right. Let's go to the phones Evan. You're on the air what's going on I I just wanted to say I'm a big fan level stuff you do. Thanks for all the quality content I just had no problem. I just had a thought I kinda wanted to pick your brain on It's about wrestling entrance music. And I feel like it's kind of this fight game thing where the reason fight game Character designs ASSOC- can catching because they have a second to catch interesting character. And I felt I want to say I'm a huge fan but I felt like their music has been pretty lacklustre unless it's like a hold over like cody steam or Chris Jericho steam. It's kind of been the randy newman wrestling is just yelling. The name of the group over and over again. I haven't been oppressed stuff. Let Jimmy Havoc capital. What do you Think of what what do you think of the new W E themes by CFO I haven't been keeping up with Soviet W enough to keep up with their new music but I always remember. It's Kinda just Kevin Owen. Steam over and over again are hell. Listen Evan. I want to thank you very much for the call. So you're not the only guy that has not been happy with the A W themes and like I don't think about it much one way the other the only time I really think about themes is theme is really good. I like it and there's certain themes that like absolutely got off well and I hate them but like I don't really think much about the music but a lot of people do like. Hey some people are very upset when Wbz took away the PYRO. Oh like people saying. I'm never going to watch his Shoghi another. They got rid of Pyro and then when they brought back the PYRO. They're like oh I could start watching smackdown again. There's Pyro it's like that's astle got you watching and not watching W we was pyro anyway. Jim Johnson I will say was great at themes because every theme was totally different at every theme was like very much all about the wrestler that rep represented it like. She's like an obvious here. But like the mountie theme I mean the multi theme was not a generic theme at all like the Mountie theme. No one else is is getting the mountie theme. It's only for the mountie same with like the demolition theme and a lot of these. It's like you saw the wrestler and the music was A very important part of the wrestler's character and now that we've got CFO doing music. I mean some people really like it but a lot of people have that same complain. It's like okay okay. Well take anybody's music and give it to anybody else and like in probably eighty percents of the cases you could do that. They're they're interchangeable themes a lot of them. We're the same effort a lot of people complain about the the W themes doesn't really bother me. I mean part I think is whether you like the theme or not not if the themes associated with the wrestler long enough. You're going to get the PAVLOVIAN response. The music kits and maybe a lot of people find it to be that way for a w maybe they won't I mean doesn't really bug me too much but I can understand if that's something that you grew up with this part of the package and now you feel well if they're just nothing happened interchangeable songs. That's a valid criticism alchemy. Ed You're on the air what's going on. Take a look at work. Kuwait City Right. Oh Yeah Yeah. I'm calling from Quaid. It's almost midnight right now much. What's going on like yeah I just wanted to To mention to you lobby please. The real looking forward for the ratings results I believe on Monday. They'll it'll come Thanksgiving the first segment of W I T. I was surprised of the opinion like you. and Dave how discussion came like Dave the like it the segment and I I was leaning toward your opinion. That was Kinda Corny like they finish the type of year with a bang but their our first minutes of the show like according to Song Kurnia celebration on the other hand a segment was kind of interesting. Kinda funny so really looking forward for the ratings. That's the first thing I was GONNA mention. Another thing is in nineteen ninety seven when they were going to have to Kuwait my country country and the incident happened on live. TV Yes where he like. Yeah I'm like I really wanted to know how was that. Received beat the US and was it covered observer or was it like you. Oh Yeah yes I I wanNA thank you very much for the call. I'll talk about it off off the air here but Yes vader fire call correctly. Vader was on Good Morning Kuwait. I believe was the name of the show. And he kinda got into the little bit of a tussle You know he was just being in character. Everything like that but I don't remember all of the details but it was it was it was a big deal in Kuwait eight. It was covered here in this country. I believe that he was detained there for a while and if I recall correctly like he was scared out of his mind and I'll I'll try and get some details hereafter while but yeah it was covered in the US. It was absolutely covered in in the observer at the time but it did get some mainstream publicity here as well. It was a it was a pretty big story. So yes vader on good morning. Kuwait the opening segments on an xt. And A W I mean the Jerko thing apparently is like a love hate thing a lot of people like some people love it. Some people hate it. I really liked it. I'll be interested to hear what Vinnie Vinnie. Thought about it because it was very long. I mean some people compared it to like the festival of friendship in a negative way. I thought everybody everybody loved the festival of friendship. I thought that Jericho's championship celebration. Maybe went a little bit too long but I was surprised. The Dave didn't like it because you know David often say well. I didn't. I think the match was very good but the crowd loved it. And so you've got to play to your audience and like is that not exactly what happened in that. Jericho GEICO segment. I mean. The crowd was into that thing from start to finish. They were eating it up. Jericho's Dad I mean he wasn't a great promo but he's he's he's they're burying. The hockey team and the fans are furious and there were so many creative things in the segment. I mean everything all the way down to you know Chris Daniels win. Scu Ran and he puts a million dollar dream on the former Virgil like did no one else notice that I love that so I thought it was great. I've seen a million like people comparing into our Bobby Lashley in the three sisters. I'm like dude. What are you talking about? This was not even in a universe. Bob Last leaders sisters but I thought it was great what I didn't like about the opening of Annex T. I liked their aspects of that. I really liked the they basically had the celebration and I forget I could actually get the guy's name here but You know they had somebody out there. Who was who was wrapping and see if I can find it here got the whole deal? It was And what people will be furious at me for doing his name. Tom My head but I Williams Williams is out there. He's wrapping the fans are going crazy. It's basically a celebration because annex t one at survivor series and the only thing that I didn't like about it is that I understand that they won and I understand that it was like baby faces heels teaming up to beat annex t to beat smackdown and raw on survivor series but they just have all these baby faces and all of these heels and they're all out there celebrating together gather and like the forgotten sons are out there. It's kind of marching around in there with the B. I just thought it was so corny. I mean listen they would not have had a victory celebration. I would have been furious. They have to have a victory celebration. They beat raw and smackdown at survivor series. They proved proved. They were the apron. I just thought it was Corny the way that they did it. That was my problem I was. I did not have a problem with there being celebration there needed to be a celebration but I just thought the way they went about it was just a little bit corny so that was my thoughts on the opening. Segment is noted tonight's Vinnie and I are going to be recapping Bo show so so if you want our thoughts on aws in-depth we usually go like ninety minutes reviewing these two shows. Well you can sign up for three ninety nine special right now at wrestling observer dot com. See what else we got here in the text message been got a couple more minutes here. Count me as one of those those people who could care less about the one show until Siham punk arrived now. I will watch when he is on. But that's about it and this person says the only great Awa theme is the Young Bucks. Love that track Kenny's on the other hand I don't dig it and he adds anyone who doesn't like the Jericho celebration or the festival of friendship. They're insane. What is wrong with Dave? Well I mean to be fair like there was a lot. There were many things about it. The Dave liked I mean actually rattled off this giant list of things that you liked about it and then he said he didn't like it so I guess he thought it was too long didn't think Jericho's Dad's Great Promo but his his dad. He's not a great promo so expect to Guy's dad but I thought needed fine. The fans ate it up so I liked it. This person years says I said the same thing last year effort obeys my favorite eleven dollar spent a month three ninety nine and absolute deal for the amount of content. Thank you for all you do. I did not make that text message up by the way that was right here in the been so I very much appreciate that. Whoever sent that to me? Do you know when Samoa Joe will be back from injury. No I don't but I mean it depends on the injury no it says. His hand is at his thumb. Is that a broken bone own. Is it a ligament. If it's ligament it could be a while. Eleven eighty-three You're listening to wrestling observer. Live with Bryan Alvarez and Mike Semper Vivey on the sports byline broadcasting network all right. Here's The vader story. So one thousand nine hundred seven April nineteen ninety seven. There's a tour Kuwait and vader and the undertaker taker. Were on good morning Kuwait with host. Bassem al off them and basically the host asked them if wrestling was fake. And the undertaker who was the champion gave this diplomatic answer and they go to vader invaders said something to the effect of the WWF. Champion is a diplomatic fellow. But I'm not and he stands up he flips over the interview table. He grabs Bassem. Awesome by the tie and he screamed something disease. Does this feel effing. Fake do you actually said the F. Word and he ended up Detained they took him to jail. The hosted not know this is coming. They charged him with assault. And I believe obscenity and if I recall correctly there was a religious holiday and so the courts were not opened in so vader was detained for two weeks and the entire time W E was getting a news every single day about vader being detained in Kuwait and they wouldn't let him go home and finally at the end of the day he was fined the equivalent of I believe one hundred sixty fifty four dollars and allowed to go back home but the story was definitely covered. Here was definitely covered. The Observer was a big story obviously a big story in Kuwait. And that is that is on Good Morning Kuwait. So there you go. He claimed that he was under orders. That's eight five five four five zero three seven three three joining you here in the studio tonight. You got in and the captain and Chris and you're listening to some of the audio from one of the Black Friday fights which so far at this year seems to be a little more subdued black Friday. No it's a mosh pit with prizes. Did either you guys go into Walmart. There were so many talks usually so many. Yeah at least a half dozen cops minimal at Walmart on in keene. This wasn't even on black. Friday actually was yesterday so on Thanksgiving. Yeah Yeah Wow on great Thursday. It's funny comparing it to some of the other stories. I'm trying to think of the other. One is in in town here. I've never even heard. We're no cops there. I even heard no no cops at target. Okay what were they doing at at while sitting around and wasting taxpayer dollars presumably while I was in preparation for the show tonight knowing that it was black Friday I was reading a bunch of stuff of black Friday and apparently Walmart Walmart is the number one you know location where most of the injuries and that type of thing occur. I think about the kind of customer. They've got well I mean. Are you suggesting something while they target the whole thing is based on low prices right like cheap cheap the cheapest stuff stuff you can get right. That's what people go to Walmart for. So you're saying those people are more likely to be scrappy. Hey more competitive is probably a Word I would choose to use as to not to be so the UN on Thanksgiving Day which is now very big shopping day. A A Lotta stores were open on Thanksgiving days. What I was told yesterday it used to just be Walmart and other stores Kinda took to that and so black? Friday is starting as early really is like Wednesday or or whatever it is but I. I went into Walmart a few years ago for Black Friday and I didn't notice what you're talking about this large police presence since you were. They altogether the cops. Were they sort of spread across the store. COUPLE OF COPS here couple cops there throughout the store just standing there just standing there literally just standing there. Yeah interesting well I. I don't suspect they saw too much because I've never heard any issue of keen fights. We're in Keene New Hampshire for listen. I never seen or heard of You know anything going on in small towns like this and I've I've been in them for many years going into Walmart and things of that nature. I mean. I saw some police but they weren't on duty there. There was like a police chief was there but he was just walking around shopping. I I mean to be honest Even worked at a store. That did the black Friday kind of stuff at one point and it. It was Kinda funny because it was it was it was. It was really kind of pathetic to be honest account like the wind. Like you expect people to wait outside in the line for the two hundred dollar all our laptop or whatever and it was. It was a couple of people but it wasn't mine. This was a long time ago. I mean ten years ago but it. We're still talking about like. It was huge at that point Friday. And it's like for what you see on the news in a town larger than keen you know it was kind of it. It was kind of pathetic. I mean we're not to say that it's not to say that there weren't people coming in in greater numbers throughout the for open your. They're opening yeah at six six. AM or whatever. I worked there. But it'd be pretty weird. I mean basically what I'm trying to say is it's it's like I it's you know it's it may not be exaggerated from like major cities but as far as like what our impression of it is You know in not major city. It's it's not really. This beginning can happen anywhere. I don't think it has to do with major cities if you disagree but there's fights that happened at Walmart outside of the Black Friday too so you know to say that it happens happens more on block right out of the fight. That's going to happen at Walmart. Outside of black. Friday is just gonNA happen to hate each other seeing each other at Walmart. I know you're still my man. You know there's something like that drama right. Well that's there's another video here at It looks like a forever. Twenty one store at Lehigh Valley Ma. I think that's it's in Pennsylvania with two guys duke it out in the like in the mall so they're not even in the store so that's probably one of those examples of of just. It happens to be a fight between two guys that works out. Doesn't have anything to do with WHO got a TV. I who special deal. It's like. Oh You whoa me mother effort or whatever you know the fight starts and because there's so many people around shopping it's an increased likelihood that somebody's GonNa GonNa get it on video so it gets chalked up as a black Friday fight even though it didn't have anything to do with actually like fighting over a deal you know it was interesting to I. I went into Walmart and it really wasn't isn't that bad last night and go over to target after immediately afterward and target was packed Walmart. Not so much really. Yeah and I thought that was interesting and that is so the reading. I was doing the Walmart altercations on Black Friday did seem to indicate that the poor the neighborhood near populated populated areas arguably large cities. You know was where most of the incidents occur so call them ghetto neighborhoods. Or whatever you like you know. Disproportionately absolutely poor areas is where majority of these alternate altercation. Take well so far this year. It seems subdued compared to previous years as far as has the number of reported fights and the videos of those fights Not as serious. I remember there was actually a kind of a best of clip taught earlier. Worst of however you WANNA look at it and there was like a classic which I remember reporting on this one. We're like a little girls holding something in some some woman. Just snatches it right out of this little girl's arms just like there's been some pretty crazy fights that have happened and nothing to ridiculous so I would say this year although some are also reporting the Black Friday headline over drudge report right now is that they're saying that maybe crowds were let were lesser This year than they have been in previous years. Maybe people aren't turning out as much and maybe because they're stretching it out that's also affecting things it's not just Friday six. AM anymore Thursday. There's Day all day Wednesday. I don't know I don't know I don't know exactly what they're doing. I've noticed that they they seem to have sales that start at different times throughout the day So that might also be having effect and I could be. I'm not one hundred all appeared to me anyway. You guys are more from doing it. What Ian said sort of coincides with what I was reading earlier today about a lot of retailers have sort of made black Friday sort of the week of thanksgiving? They've started their sales. You know earlier in the week on Tuesday so that people didn't have to you know sort of Kampe just putting out like the sales like Throughout the day you know in order to alleviate the you know that was the initial rush because if you do it you know just at six. AM or whatever when the store starts. You're not going to get. You'RE NOT GONNA be able to capture as much of that business because people are going to You know turn away right do it. Throughout the day. You know it's people are GonNa go in because it's not too too busy you know they're not gonNA have to wait in line for an hour or two or whatever it is isn't it. I would think it would increase the sale so from a business perspective. It seems like a good. If you're a retailer you know what's going through your mind. Are you happy because you've created this environment in which people want to camp out the night before if they're going to the premiere of the next Star Wars is good for publicity It's not good when somebody beats up somebody at your store. That's not good but they do say any publicity is good football. They say though necessarily disagreed some publicity's better than other their publicity. Yeah I mean yeah. That's possible well they have that That website that Black Friday death count DOT com. Yeah I don't the about this well. Dead and one hundred seventeen injuries. Two Thousand and six. Somebody shots in a parking lot. I pretty sure that was one of those things where it didn't have anything to do with you. Know you go by playstation you know wasn't it was probably somebody who saw somebody he he hated in the parking lot and it just so happened to be on black Friday. I mean this think about it. There's probably fights nights that happen in these stores throughout the year. But they're not as well documented outside the keene store. I just saw a fresh fight video. Posted from Albuquerque's Walmart couple of women fighting over probably some cheap item. Thinks go there. We can tell you more about you know that there's really not that much to say thankfully thankfully people seem to be relatively. Well behaved I would say this year more so than years in the past. And maybe that's because the crowds aren't as big as they've been in years pie would prefer that this was an indication of sort of a cultural shift. At least you know in the geographic area known as the United States have fights happen in an in the UK as well as videos. From there. I the idealist to think that it's it's you you know it's because of a cultural shift people are getting Tamer or less. Yeah Yeah Yeah. I'd like to think that I don't know that I do. I just like to it because numbers are down. If you don't have as many people in the same place I think what we thought the end of the show or maybe we only did on break was that they're they seem to be. The store seem to be you. You know moving the sales throughout the day so strategizing. They'll put signs up saying the sale doesn't start until you know X. Y. Time on like a certain segment apply so there probably will be in the store but you can't buy it yet and they've also A few years back some of the stores would hand out tickets to the people that were waiting. Oh you want the the DVD deep player or whatever the laptop. Okay here you go the first twenty people you guys get him. Sorry the rest of you. You're too late you know. Don't even try right right and then and you go in with your ticket and you are given an item if you've got the ticket so they've they've come up. The market has come up with ways to kind of deal with this and I think the extended hours the longer Yep Options Ping able to shop on Thanksgiving you know and having all these deals available over there were some retailers to that were just simply like You know instead of opening at midnight on Black Friday they were like no. We're just going to let employers and drive their families on Thanksgiving. We're just GONNA open at our regular time on Friday. Oh that's interesting Target hearing keen was open until one. A M on thanksgiving. The they said that was. That's a additional hour- from last year. Oh interesting and they don't usually I think the closures the like ten ten ten thirty. Yeah that's something else that Walmart in town has done for years until daylight daydream Christmases. Yeah Thanksgiving being My understanding was they were only open until their normal time eleven. PM But they used to not be open at all on Thanksgiving and then they did really and then they did like a special. We'll evening Sale on Thanksgiving and now from what I understand they were open all day. So it's expanded out NPR reporting on Black Black Friday. And saying that it's not what it used to be. Just ask Chris Ott. He married into a family. That never missed black Friday and let's just say he really got into it. After thanksgiving dinner they'd Peru's Black Friday ads developing a quote really fun strategic plan. Pick the store that we're gonNA wait outside of we would divide and conquer says od. WHO's forty two is a cybersecurity engineer and youth pastor in the Denver area he says quote? It was so extreme for us that we'd be on vacation with family in Florida over Thanksgiving and we would wait outside the best by Orlando to see what we could get there unquote. It's a lot better to Orlando by the way because it's nice and warm there by comparison Harrison but lately. His family tradition has fizzled out. Stores kept opening earlier cutting into Thanksgiving dinner. The Internet made it easy to price. Let's check deals. That started to seem less worthwhile and online shopping became more convenient last year. He says quote we decided. We'd rather just put up Christmas decorations nations and didn't even go. That's that that's more of like what I hope would would be happening. You know the reason why. I've never been to excited. What about like Black Friday? It's just because heels are like they're they're more imaginary than real. The the two hundred dollar laptop is cut. Throw these three year old process a serious. They know it's garbage garbage. They don't they leave out the Webcam leave out like different components. Yeah and then you know they. White Label hard drives. So they're gonNA fail in the next three days is after he bought it for the other retail trick that they do is like and they only have four of them anyway. You know the other retail trick. Is You know they have an item you know. Let's I'd say it's a hundred bucks normally right but then when it comes around for the Christmas season the Black Friday or whatever right they go used to be two hundred but it's marked down now two hundred bucks you know. It's always been a hundred bucks. It's very true. Well okay I mean having actually I've worked in retail as you have Chris in the in the past and you know back in the day and this is the late nineteen ninety s so black Friday has been going on for a while Back in the day. I remember when we literally had a pallet full of VHS DEX VCR RV CR's that we were selling that you know there wasn't just four of them. It was literally a pallet full of these. Oh yes got wheeled out to the front of the store and sat down now. It was the cheapest model no doubt about that of of any VHS tech but it probably was a loss leader and that was sort of the traditional way that these things would run where they they were actually lose a few bucks and that's a psychological thing that they're doing there so they're giving you this one that's really cheap and then right mark and everything else up and so it may be a deal and I will put that in quotes for that VHS player but it's like I don't know it's like is it worth it. The real question is is it worth not if it increases or at at least lets them get to their projected per ticket revenue right and by per ticket I mean per receipt right so worth it for the customer for the it definitely talking about the customer makes sense if you're getting a hundred dollar VCR. Let's do something more modern if you're getting a hundred dollar BLU array player to the end of the VCR. Explain Blu Ray player is too because if before it ever got off the Ground Blu ray pencils Salaam using HDD. Now no BLU Ray Blu. HDD competed with BLU ray. DVD fizzled. get-go race still being half came to market and still around but still it's not been massively adopted like DVD or VHS HD DVD data if if you look at the statistics anyway it's not sure oh the number is what's dead just play streaming went to adoption right exactly a streaming took over a not not blue. But anyway if you've got one hundred dollar Blu Ray Player that you're getting for seventy you know you're getting thirty bucks off. How how much time do you really want to spend in line you know? What is your time worth as far as you gotta get up early and wait and then you know possibly you won't get it So so I mean it's just when you run the numbers it just doesn't make sense ninety nine percent of the time now. Is it worth it for the experience. I've always enjoyed going out to watch and to participate in it. Grab a camera. What like I said the odds that you're going to see a fight our next next zero no but you could get like footage or snapshots for People Walmart DOT COM or whatever? I guess I mean I'm not really into that but I think this is fun to kind of go and see what they've got and honestly though once you there. It's not really as interesting as you think it might be. Basically no that's my experience anyway. But let's talk more about why things aren't as attractive. The Black Friday sales. They interviewed this guy. His family went every year as a tradition. They've stopped going so let's see so so what happened. we'll get into to that. Come up here and you can share your thoughts. Blu Ray hasn't hasn't taken off and he says he knows a bunch of people that have blue ray players yes this is personal experience and I'm talking about statistically Just the numbers aren't there it's basically went from VHS to DVD to streaming streaming. And it's it's it's not to say that there were a lot of playstation users that ended up with a BLU ray player. I said he can't count playstation if they don't have collection although I did it by a PS three three whenever it came out. Even though I had pretty much stopped playing video games I bought the PS three when it came up B. cut had blue. I've heard of that from a lot of people but like that was its main. That's how guy most people's hands when I tell people that I have when I still have like I have net flicks the disc version right so so I get Blu rays and do what I tell people that they like. Look at me like I'm surprised it's interesting because like if you actually look at like stores and stuff like they're they're still selling DVD's primarily. So whether you want to comment on the current state of black Friday retailing ailing in general which of course a lot of retailing is switching to online as you would expect. People don't want to deal with the crowds. They don't want it. I mean I had to go route and get I had go out. You gave me a heads up about this last night. We were at a you and I Chris and a few of the other locals We went out for Thanksgiving dinner at the Indian Indian restaurant here in town that that takes crypto currency and you noted that one of my headlights was out and I'm like Oh man and they were open so now I have to go and get a new headlight. Yeah Right. Surprisingly they were on black Friday like well. I don't WanNa go. I don't WanNa go to Walmart to get a headlight right. I don't want to wait until the whole automotive department. at Walmart. Oh I have thought about before so I don't want to go to warmer. I don't want to go to the auto stores near Walmart. I don't WanNa go and deal with that. So luckily I went to another autos auto store that sorta like off the beaten path. It's and I gotta taking care of that. been like sort of Anti I don't WanNa say Black Friday specifically right but like sort sort of the the the creep like earlier in earlier people start putting up their Christmas tree lights and then of course the black Friday overload and you know you see the things like folks folks getting trampled for a big screen. TV or whatever people pepper spraying each other. Because you know it's not right the selfishness that you know and so I've just been anti I all of that for a long time it to a point where I have avoided going out on black Friday. See really anything outside of maybe to dinner right. I'm not going shopping for really anything came out today. You're at our CRYPTO. Did but again for dinner right right you know and it was good one. We had like ten people almost ten people. I think today it was a lot of fun as a really like talking to against from What is it north? North country folks come fascinating Yeah so all right. Let's get back into the story here from NPR again looking at a family guy in his early forties. He says for years his family made a tradition out of going to black Friday. But now they're not doing it anymore. They decided they'd rather just put up Christmas decorations and not go and NPR says. It's not just this guy who's named ought. Chris ought not just him this year. Only thirty six percent of people people said they planned to do most of their holiday shopping on Black Friday. That's down from fifty one percent just three years ago. There's really that was really fifty. Remember some people said they were doing their Christmas shopping and bug. Yeah that's hard to most of it doing most of wild. It's not hard to believe to me. I mean really pretty closely on on tablet following aimed at closely so but I find it fast. That's I'm shot that that meant. That percentage of the population is actually like stores are not designed to have those kind of numbers. Mike all at one time As far go at six. Am they go throughout the whole day. Oh yeah yeah so spread out throughout the day. Why Hi below? I mean you're talking about like one hundred and something million people probably reason why though is because people have the time off. It's the reason why Black Friday is wearing is because everybody's out for Thanksgiving at their family. They're sick of their family. They spent the last day at Thanksgiving. They're ready to go do something and nobody almost us. Very few of them have to work on that Friday. So it's like let's go shopping right. Yeah they gotta buy gifts for their. They feel obligated to buy gifts for their family. And Hey they're sales. Why not go on Black Friday? But now it's down from fifty one percent to thirty six percent which is a significant drop will and I wonder how much of that is attributable to do. What's called Cyber Monday right the factory? Taylor's yeah no it's definitely a factor. Cyber Monday has been gaining owes more competition now because of the Internet brick and mortar and then Actually I think black for dean. Black Friday star is a result of the online on. No no no no long long before it started when. That's a good question as far as when it started but it was definitely before Internet stuff. I grew up of the navy's freeze later on but I thought it was a responsible but anyway I might be wrong. Black Friday is still a very major event both for retailers and shopping but historically it's been in the major event and now it's just part of the overall season says Steve Bar who leads the consumer markets practice at a survey firm called Price Waterhouse Scoopers stores have permanently conditioned shoppers to expect big discounts on days other than black Friday says bar and retailers have made up additional shopping holidays. Today's like cyber Monday and Amazon has their own holiday called Prime Day. They've moved doorbusters back to Thursday and even Wednesday this year many started holiday sales back in October to be clear black Friday. Still the busiest shopping day of the year says Bryant Field of shopper. Track which tracks in store foot traffic quote. Our data shows. There's still a massive spike on black. Friday wikipedia claims the earliest reference to black. Friday was nineteen fifty two. Although the term itself didn't become widely used until recent decades so I'm gonNA guess the eighties or nineties I would say late seventies was was. There were black Friday. Friday's back in the seventies. Oh Yeah I don't remember that I remember the night you weren't alive. I was. Yeah I was can't remember something where you were but but that that said I was alive in the eighties and I remember a lot of stuff going on in the eighties. I can tell you I don't remember much of the eighties. I mean I remember being a kid but that doesn't necessarily translate. What the retail trends were? I wouldn't necessarily remember you know like what percent I remember in their nineties right before the Internet basically you know it was becoming more aware a thing this insane traffic and that's independent of black Friday. Probably ten years older something so dating you remember going to you know. I remember the the parental units getting up early in the morning to go drive off to wherever you my parents were that crazy but it certainly on the television like with the media in like cameras and malls and stuff for the malls night right.
