In Lima. Chance today I have Ernest Tom Pelly with me. If you guys could see what's actually going on here. At My side here I actually have a couple of Thomas pieces up on the wall. I think they're fantastic I I love I. Love Your Art Tom, so I'm really excited to have you on. And I hope that the the audience gets his excited wants to. Once a little bit of work on their walls to so, Tom Tell us about yourself on the Chicago. Based common book artist Neil, straighter the living here in downtown Chicago since about two thousand. I grew up in Pennsylvania northeastern Pennsylvania. That's where I got my. Undergraduate degree in graphic design I got that. Home College williamsport Pennsylvania home of the Little League world series. Victory Proud of well, it's. Most places in Pennsylvania. It's dislike okay. It's a hell, so. At least you can look up and find some geographical thing. There you go. I studied there for four years and got a degree in graphic design and I worked for two years after that. Essentially making I worked for a commercial printer for year, and then I worked for A. Publisher. Essentially a rival to the phone books Donnelly Directory they used to do. The roadrunner Wiley Coyote. That was their mascot. But. Essentially look phone books I. We make phonebook cats, yeah. After two years out after doing that for a little bit. Wasn't exactly the most creatively fulfilling so I went to. Further my education I went down to the Savannah College of Art Design skied down in Savannah. and. That's where I studied cocker bugs in. It was duration. I was. Down there for about three three half years finishing of that working, and of course we're there while also starting to work freelance during illustrate for gaming companies and other companies like. And then about two thousand yoga. Yeah about two thousand and moved to Chicago. And been living here or saints working as a freelance comic book artist. Go. That's pretty good background there. Now you don't have it's coming, but you don't have a specific Tom Kelly comic book yet right now. Most of the stuff I've done has been work for hire for other companies. Like I've done stories in our for like. Oh yeah comics in skokie. I've done things for them. Don Different books for DC comics image comics on a dunk covers and interior art pieces for like Dark Horse Comics and A couple indie people I know as well as. A lot of work for gaming companies. was is the coast Lego and stuff like that, not really ever my own. My own actual physical comedy. I've done a few web comics online. I Don a choice comic adventure comic. Years ago. But nothing actually usual physical imprint. Yeah, well I know you from the art prints who sell in order to Sally and they're just so striking, and even though you are working in other people's characters generally. It's. It's not anyone else's style that I'm seeing, you know what I mean so I just really I. Really Love Your use of of I guess we'd say shadow and light. The way you. You get so much emotion out of like I have A. daredevil piece I'm a big daredevil fan. That you did, and it's really just an outline of daredevil standing on top building, and it says everything to be man. It just really works so. That's something that I know you for is that, but then I also did see you branch. You were doing some other things when we were at the last kind together. I saw you doing some other like you had some some things that definitely look like they might fit with. A little bit of just really cool so and we will get to it because you do have a book that will be coming out, we'll. We'll get to that in a minute. Just hold your horses there Tom. So with this pandemic, everybody's kind of stuck inside right now the the cons are shutdown or postponed and I know this is a big. Source of connection, and I'm sure income for you. Are you supplementing this or you're doing commissions online at all? I am taking commission. Commissions. People can contact me through either Tom Kelly art on instagram or through my website, which is basically my begin our site, which is Tom Kelly art dot. com. Use Message me there and I'll I'll? Take, commissions for. Monday for nonstop whether you want Prince or something fun for kids I really run a whole spectrum because I'm sort of more of a a more of a traditionally trained artists like in the academic sense, so a lot of the things I went to school war. We're just tools in the tool kit you had. A weird time period like hot yaws born in seventy two. And you know my parents were older and Mike. The, story track that I figured out go. US I would study graphic design and end up working for an AD agency has an in house or guy, and basically be doing a variety of art odds whatever they would be coming across myself, so might be a magazine a children's book at might commercial storyboards accent yet so? I really kind of developed a broad skill like tool side that I pick and choose for projects and and like. With the children's stuff usually you want. Children's these to be friendly, huge soft inviting. A Relatively simple and easy to read then when I do my illustration work. Does the president seen? That's more conic and slicker and it simple, but very complex the same time. and that's more geared towards what you might see for like. An album, cover or a magazine or book cover, Sure Yeah. Good. Description of what you do, because I I it's, it's really accurate Now I did mention commissions, but you also mentioned Devi Art you do have quite a catalog on their people can order prints from you at any time. I've been on that site since about ten thousand. And it's still sort of like it's. It's easy to use, and that's why like. And it's a great place to create a page and warehouse. Your work make subsets so I have a folder an area that superheroes Iberia. That's just. Traditional Black and white art. I have a section. That's children's are, and so you can go through, and there's a lot of stuff in a ton of stuff. is going. As, opposed to my instagram, the which I do host on very regularly. But it's not as easy to categorize. Navigate the things. You're interested in it, right? That's more for people that just kind of leave through and see kind of what's going on your your and art is. It's an amazing patriots, just a ton of stuff there. and. It's cool that people can order it so. Great Great Great, so do you have like a patron? Some nut how they beyond setup right now. Leave. Set it up. A within the next month or two because. It's a necessary thing and sometimes you just put off. At. Z. Shaw I've Had different blogs and websites at a certain point becomes a real challenge to run and stay on top of everything. Sure so I tried to I mean when invasions. It wasn't as problematic because I can meet people connect their. Give them my direct contact, information and kind of go that way now since that environment doesn't exist in the. The moment, yeah, I will be developed. That will be creating patriotaid probably at the end of this month to be able to facilitate better with people call so when that happens. Make sure that you tell me and we'll. We'll add all your social media links into the show notes, but will definitely add that I can add it two months off we need to. Definitely get that in there, because like I said I. I think it's really worth people checking out what you're doing and supporting artists like you patriotic and kickstarter in different crowd funding sources right now become so vital. Thing so you have a kickstarter coming up, tell me about. All yes. kickstarter kicks off in July. It's called the it's called foot fist Frankenstein. It's and you're right. You're writing android. Wrote and illustrated at I did have on a letter I did hire letter action letter to? Marshal Dillon. Known him, he's. You know he's worked for Marvel in DC. He's a very good professional guy and I brought him on board to helped me some chores, but it's pretty much. Yeah, the means story and art all comes from me I wrote it drew it in a tell me about the book. The book is the biggest centre fine. It's a combination of all the things I loved as a kid, so growing up a loves your monster movies and monsters, comic books and you know come through here certain Usubov that it's basically the story of a monster who, after finding a piece after wandering around and finding finally finding peace and happiness has that ripped away, and then that leads them down a path of revenge sort of like I like. John Wick meets the hulk a lot. Come from theater that all sounds good to me, man. It's easier to do a story yourself. If it's some of its things, you like to draw and rights and are familiar. Sure, and like I said those you. The influences all come from the stuff I grew up with so it naturally flows out of things that I like to draw as well as on. A simple story to relate so when does this kickstarter go up? The kickstarter kicks off July first. It goes live on the first of July excellent excellent so once again I'll share links into the show notes and. Actually. This is an exclusive for this show. It's the first time were relaunching show from our network called. Go Fund this and when Tom's book is going to be kick started. We will have tom on there. As well will ask different questions so maybe getting a little more depth on this stuff, so those of you that are interested in what time does definitely stay tuned, pay attention and watch for go fund this to hit because we will absolutely be featuring Tom in that first week. Of July so top with all these cons that are canceling postponing being held back one. What do you think is the best way for people support creators at this time? Only the best way to support creators is to find out the ways the creators are on either taking on commissions or selling their bugs and supporting now. I know a lot of artists like you. Said Have Patriots. Many many others actually have their books, unusual formats, either through their own sights, wrong places like complex. Where you can just go by and have it your being through the Internet down to device those are all probably the best ways that we all can support each other in the things that we like. Yeah because I mean really. Reach out to creators, look on either instagram or their websites or other social networks. See what they're doing. And then you know, see look and see if you can support the now. Cool so here's a here's a touchy feely question for you. Tom This is your dream cod. Who are you most excited to meet? Dream. Dream! And I'm not throwing. Throwing rules on this. It's a dream. Most. Jack Kirby. Jack Kirby Jack Kirby. I think so far while we want to talk to him. Yeah, I would say so far out of the what have we done? Twenty five episodes of this? At least a third of them have been Jack Kirby. That is pretty impressive. So. You never had a chance to meet him now. Unfortunately I mean I did go to smaller shows when I was a kid, but. Conventions were slightly different environment. Professionals really didn't travel too much. Go to a lot of shows so. By the time I started like tabling and doing shows semi professionally professionally John. Kirby already passed away. So there is no chance I could ever actually need in person yeah? I've met I need. I've been trumped. Elevators were standing weeded out seven times so. Gal. Awkward like I contact with the man, so a lot of people who? Are Allowed craters were alive I've actually met interacting with the shows. Some capacity, but Jack No could never get home, so I'd I'd love to sit down and. Talk to and listening philosophy on stuff. Yeah I. Have a I have a funny Stanley Story. I never got to meet him. We were at a convention, and I had at Edward with me. Who was doing this week? In Geek with us, he was a teenager and. Stanley was going to be signing and I said you know what he's getting older. This might be my last chance. Let's go over there I'm GonNa meet him finally after all this time. All these conventions I'm GONNA. Go say hi to him. I mean come on a podcast called enough said you think I liked Stan late, and so we are walking over, and I can't remember which artist it is, but it was a big marvel artist. We're walking over and this guy, catches. Edwards. Edward starts talking to him just real briefly. Like Oh look here. My books and I go I'm like okay. Well I guess it will be the next convention. And Edward finally turns around these like Hey. We should get going. You wanted to meet Stanley and I said I take my finger and I point and I go. I don't think we're making it over there just as I do that. Stanley walks. Within a whisper of my finger. He walks right by me. And I just said I'm not getting a chance to meet Stanley and he kind of looked like it was like right out of the movies like. And he kept walking and I was like that was my big chance. Encounter was Stanley. It's not as awkward as being seconded elevator with him, but that is by. One experience where you dislike you might. Four other artists are all sitting there all play. You want to be cool, and you want to be respectful someone because like you're just in the hotel. Rawal afternoon shows going up to own right. Throw stuff in a room and then go out to dinner and you know ruin their at. It's like. How do you break the ice? What can you possibly say? The doesn't sound like you the biggest by Nerd in the room and you just kind of like. You just gotTa like. Elevators yeah, thanks for what you know what he knew. He. Walks out. They clothes never. See. You become that Saturday. Live bit where like. You remember what he did. Spider man. That was cool. Look like so you just. kind sit there and just kind of keep cool. Yeah, right? Awkward silence in the you like. Being why like to think I almost punctured a lung, because I had my finger out there, and he almost walked into it, and at that age it could have done him in could've been the guy. I mean his doctor doom. So we're else could check out your work. You said your website you said DB and are. Like social media are you out there on? Most social media.
