He is the former sports columnist for the New York Times and a Pulitzer Prize. Winning author and his new book is called it happens. Every Spring Dimaggio the splendid splinter and a lifetime at the ballpark. Ira in your many years of watching and covering baseball. What makes an important in the culture of America? Well you know I think that number one. It's it's more leisurely than football or Or basketball as far as primary Sports are concerned Or even or even soccer and So there's time in between innings. That fathers can talk to sons. And there's unless you're at the ballpark and the and the music is blaring and you can't hear anything But And then there's the the tradition and the history of baseball. That is unlike any other sport that we have. And so you know Once upon a time it was called the National Past Van. Mostly owners of baseball teams. But I think that there was a germ of truth to it and And you know even you know people have said it's too slow or it's but I Attendance is great and look and and when teams are competing in the in the playoffs. It's exciting And there may you know as exciting. A sports event as ever occurred was game seven of the last world series cubs and Indians and And I'm not saying that just because I was from Chicago and Lifetime Cup Fan but although I've been in New York for over sixty years but I it's it's it's it's electoral game you know. It's it's thoughtful And and they wear knickers the way they did that in the in the nineteenth century. So it's similar in those ways but it's and it's a it's a beautiful game You know you could appreciate you know. There's nothing for me. There's nothing any more beautiful in sports than a shortstop going deep in the whole To make a play hand gloving with his left hand across his body and then writing himself and throwing hard a long throw across the Infield the first baseman and and just narrowly getting the runner high. Anyway it seems aesthetically satisfying and just to back you up. I was down at spring. I was going over in Scottsdale to the giants game covering that and I'll never forget walking behind a father and an eight year old son. The son had a big baseball glove. The father had his arm around his son and said guess who. We're going to see today. We're going to see Mickey Mantle. That is one of the special things that goes from. Era Era translates very well. Doesn't it. Well you're you're right you're right Ryan I guess you know And but in football it's close to the action in baseball which is Kinda Nice there at the crack of the bat and and And and and basketball. There's squeaker the sneakers and movement is fast and and and and the bodies are crashing a Other the boards. I mean you know best. What can be very rough game but at the sidelines of a football game. It's sounds are it's almost like we're a World War And you know I mean even the punt is noisy but I've been on the sidelines. They're crashing and smashing. They're snorting They don't put. The baseball is just a beautiful for for for me. Although I I liked basketball a lot especially and and football It's it's fun to watch from from a distance But I wouldn't want like Joe Nemeth and even breadth fire They said that they wouldn't. They wouldn't want their children or their grandchildren to play football out to people that this is a collection of stories so it covers a vast part of baseball and history and players in everything but the other thing I like about this book is it has humorous stories in it and I was talking to Willie mays down at spring training one time around the batting cage and I said what happened to storytelling Willie in Baseball. And he says it's a lost art but you in this book have really collected some of those humor stories. Tell one of them. And maybe you might include in the discussion the Minor League catcher who was substituting something for a baseball yes Isn't it with president hand and I had a column to write one morning and I was looking through the papers and I saw a very small item about a a a Class A- catcher in the Indians Organization and it was in Ohio I believe and And he was he would throw it off his team because this is what he did it was. The end of the season is team was in last place. There was an so they had No chance for a playoffs and He thought he'd bring a little humor to the solemness of his team. Which were going wasn't going anywhere and So he he got a potato and shaved the potato to shape like a baseball and put it in his back pocket and so at one point the other team had a runner on third base and And the the pitcher threw the pitch. He caught the ball and very quickly. He took the shaved potato out of his back. Pocket is right Back pocket and then he threw over the head of the third baseman. As if to try to pick off the rudder well the runner comes running in and the catcher has the ball and the catcher then tags the guy out. The Umpire Dicko is funny. Because the guy safe and right after the game The manager didn't take it was funny either any fired. Any he fires the player and before leaving the The team The player had another Potato which he saved US saved this look like a baseball in the shape of Baseball. And he gave it the put on the manager's desk with a note and the note read this spuds for you that is great why do you think some of the storytelling baseball has diminished? Well it. It may be seen in the sports section all along the way because number one. They're more sports and number two I it seems that made the editors end and the writers Are Looking AFL are looking for the nuts and bolts of of a series of the seriousness of the gains and there. Is You know there's steroids and there are different kinds of up cheating and corruption and so forth so That's that's what they're looking for and I grew up reading Red Smith who was a great storyteller. It's a sports columnist and And that's Roomy To to journalism and enter Sports You Know He. He would write about the basics as well but periodically. You know he would write a A humor column or something happening. It's funny and then he can be funny and and a lot of cayman just talking to players. I mean they had all these funny stories among themselves and So I I. I tried that and over the years of my over almost fifty years of reading the reading sports and But I rarely see it anymore and and readers may not even realize but they're missing something. I think and You know I was charmed by that that the Tayo Story and I and readers were to So maybe is really said. It's it's Kinda lost art because the writers aren't looking for this kind of thing and I think editors are not asking for it a little bit over a minute left. And what do you want people to take away from this book? Ira Well you know there's opinions there's there's as you say you know. There's there's humor. There's there's drama And it's a it's a reflection of of our lives in America and Through the through the prism of baseball. And Are you happy with the way this book came out? I'm very happy with. I think the publisher did a beautiful job. I I think it's attractive looking book and with a great cover And I I hope that That readers share their love of Of storytelling as as I did. I tried to employ in about thirty five seconds. Is there a moment in baseball? And all your years of coverage that kind of is in etched in your mind Well there's many but you mentioned again Willie mays and at the end of his career. He was forty two years old and I remember in spring training That he he struck out and and it was getting later in the afternoon and and he's walking back to the DUGOUT and And there was a shadow a shadow. His shadow was sort of following behind him and it was almost like that this was the this was really amazed at the end of his career and he was just a shadow of his former self. I WanNa thank you IRA. Congratulations on another outstanding book. And come back when you read another one for us. Okay right thank you. He's written a number of books. He is a New York. Times bestseller and usually the books are about the Yankees either as an organization from ownership standpoint or about the players says well he is a bestselling author as I said former Yankees PR director and a noted baseball historian and he spent some twenty years with the Yankees. He began in public relations. I is Mickey mantles. Fan Mail clerk in nineteen sixty eight and rising to become the team's third PR director. He's written a number of books on the Yankees as I said and their players and his latest book about one of the Yankees and baseball's iconic managers. It's called Casey Stengel baseball's greatest character as a player stangled contemporaries included Babe Ruth honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson and. He was the only person in history to wear the uniform of all four New York teams. The dodgers giants Yankees and mets as a legendary manager. He formed the complicated relationships with Yogi. Berra Joe Dimaggio Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin and he was the undisputed Quirky Hilarious and beloved face baseball and along the way he revolutionized the role of manager while winning a spectacular ten minutes and seven world series championships and he was elected to the hall of fame in Nineteen Sixty six. What was it Mardi? That made stangl so appealing to you that you wanted to write a book about him. Well it had been thirty five years or so since Bob Kramer did a really classic Casey Stengel biography. But I had available to me the internet which Bob didn't have by then and I could research his all the newspapers from his minor league cities when he was a young player so that was a wealth of information there that had long been lost and then the family gave me an unpublished memoir by. Casey's wife Edna which showed a whole different side of Casey stangl. We'd always known Casey Baseball man now. We knew him as more of a person Casey the man so with this new material. I didn't feel I was treading on old ground. Just repeating cremers work and off. I went tell me a little bit about him growing up in Kansas City. Well he was a little bit of a rascal is a kid. Which sort of plays into this He and his brother grants for recreation in the wintertime. They used to like to throw snowballs at men with pipes to try and knock the pipes out of their mouth. So that was Casey. The child and he was never student of the month of central high school but he did learn to play. Baseball there and Right after high school he became a professional minor league player. You know he didn't want to be a baseball player really. Didn't he? Want to be a dentist. Well a funny story because he did go to dental school in Kansas City. For three years having you know he wanted to have a career to fall back on But he didn't finish because it was decided that it was just too difficult for a left-hander to be a dentist in those days. Might still be difficult today at sure but too difficult for a left-hander and I came to the conclusion which I put in the book. What took them three years to figure. They might have come to that conclusion. On the first day you think aside from baseball ability got a reputation as I guess you might say eccentric player because one Scout Mike. Ko referred to stangl as Dandy ballplayer. But it's all from the neck down well He was he was a decent player. I mean he wasn't a hall of Famer but he played fourteen years. He played on four pennant winning teams and He developed great intuition about the game particularly sitting side by side with John. Mcgraw in the New York giants dugout where he learned an awful lot so his eventual success as a manager which came quite a number of years later goes back to just being paying attention on the field while he was a player and he was also considered a little bit of a difficult guy because he did his own negotiations. I know he played for the dodgers from nineteen twelve through nineteen seventeen and he routinely held out from the team before each season in contract disputes. Now players didn't usually do that. You accepted whatever the owner wanted to give you and it just got to a point that Charles ebbets traded single then to the Pittsburgh pirates after a couple of years because he just got sick and tired of it. He often had contract disputes with management. One year he actually three fused to report to the Philadelphia Phillies. This was a midseason trade and he said I'm not going to Philadelphia and instead he went home to Kansas City. Organized an amateur team and found games. out into the West In a barnstorming ways. So I mean today I think that would pretty much get suspended but There was no commissioner back then and he was freer to do acts like that. I don't know whether you saw this story but I came across it in one thousand nine hundred nineteen When he was with the pirates he was being taunted by the dodger fans. Who of course he played for the dodgers before going to the pirates and Casey got hold of a sparrow and he used to turn the crowd to his favor with that sparrow apparently with the bird. Tuck gently beneath his cap. Facie straight to the plate amidst the chorus of boos and catcalls. He turned to the crowd tipped his hat. And outflow the sparrow and the years. Turn to cheers and Stengel became an instant fan favourite at that point. Well you've told the story well and that's in the book What it really did. The fans in Brooklyn Loved Casey. He was a real crowd pleaser wherever he was They booed him because he was now an enemy player in this was his first game back but when he released that poor little sparrow from under his cap. He won the fans over and he was forever after a really popular figure in Brooklyn. You mentioned about him playing for the Phillies Boston. Aside from the dodgers and the New York giants he went to three world series. Tell me about each of those He actually went to four. He just didn't get into any of the Games in one of them but he was on four world series teams And his highlight in that was in one thousand nine hundred twenty three the first year of Yankee Stadium. He hit the very first world series home. Run in the Yankee Stadium while playing for the New York giants now. Of course it being Casey Stengel. There had to be a funny story that went with that and it was an inside the park home. Run and Casey who was kind of an old player by then in his thirties was hustling around the base chugging his way losing his breath and he thought along the way that one of his shoes flew off anyway he slides home and he gets up and he says to hang out the on deck hitter. I think I lost my shoe out there and gouty looked down and he said how many were you wearing because he still has to He was reported to be a competent player. As you pointed out but even he said one time I had many years that I was not so successful as a ball player as it is because it's a game of skill. Did he not feeling was that particularly good He had the self confidence that most major league players have. He thought he was good enough but he was also smart enough to know. He wasn't Babe Ruth and he had a fight for job every year near the end of his career. He went to the To the Boston Braves. And he was the fourth outfielder on a roster. Where I'm sure you haven't heard of any of the three guys who were starters. And he kind of knew. It was all over for him. Then how did he get into managing Right from Boston. They're the owner of the braves. Judge Aimal Fuchs owned team in Worcester Massachusetts and was obvious that Casey's playing days were winding down he s case if he'd liked to go to Worcester and manage the team there and Casey said yes He also made him team president at Worcester so he could make a little more money. At the end of the season he had an offer to go to Toledo which was a higher ranking minor league team judge. Fuchs didn't want him to go But Casey saunas obvious advancement. So Casey the president sent a letter to Casey. The manager firing him. Nothing Judge Fuchs could do about. Where did the University of Mississippi come into that In in early in his career One of his high school classmates got a job. Coaching Baseball. At Ole Miss He invited Casey to come down as an assistant coach and he couldn't pay KC but he was able to get him a professorship teaching some classes so out of that given the nickname of the school is Ole Miss. He became known as the old professor. Any also coached With Milwaukee when they were in the American Association and with the OAKS and the Pacific Coast League as well. Tell me about those two stops. Well Milwaukee was owned by Bill Vic who was often World War Two and never on the scene but he hated the idea of Casey being as manager He was disgusted. That the the guys doing the hiring pick Casey stangl out of everybody Vick was never a fan. Needless to say and that only lasted one year when he went to Oakland. He had pretty good team. There in the Pacific Coast League was like a major league back then when there were only sixteen major league teams the Coast League was equal to You know like the next eight teams that we have now so When he won the junior world series with the Oakland Oaks. In one thousand nine hundred. Forty eight his star really rose. That was a great accomplishment. He did it with a lot of well-known veteran players and a kid named Billy Martin at Second Base and that put Casey back on the radar as a potential manager. Some day somewhere and that would prove to be the Yankees Marty. Appel is with us again. Historian baseball historian spent a long time with the Yankees as their PR. This is America's sports talk show sports byline USA. Here's Ron Var Marty. Appel is with us here on Sports. Byline talking about his book. Pacy stingl baseball's greatest character. We're GONNA make a selection of the month on the sports byline. Us A book corner and you mentioned about going to the Yankees. When he got there was ought in any particular way. Or how did he take on that challenge? He should have been odd because these were the elite New York Yankees and he's whole managing career had been with low budgets second-division teams but he'd been in the game long enough and knew everybody and had enough self confidence that he wasn't going to play that game of being an awe and interestingly everybody had their eyes on how he would get along with Joe Dimaggio who was the elite player in the game at that point the very first day of the very first spring training for the two of them. Casey came out of the clubhouse and he read spring training rules. Like how much you are supposed to tip the maids and things like that and one of the rules. He threw into the mix. There was at the players. Were not allowed to go to the dog track at night. Well anyone who'd followed the Yankees for years knew that this is what Joe Dimaggio did every night. So this was some line in the sand for Casey to draw with his star player. And what happened? Was that Dimaggio went anyway. And when they went and asked Casey about it case he said well. I have no firsthand knowledge of that. I wasn't there and that was the end of the controversy. Can you imagine today with twenty five hundred cell phone cameras? Going off and the headlines. The next day saying what now Casey. What a controversy. That would have been. The answer would have been. I mentioned in the introduction that he formed complicated relationships with Yogi Berra Joe Maggio Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin. What was behind that behind? It was Casey self confidence that he's the boss and what he says goes When Billy Martin got traded in nineteen fifty seven after a fracas at the Copacabana nightclub. Billy was extremely hurt and offended that Casey wouldn't stop that trade and stand up him. He was Casey's boy And for twenty years they never spoke. But if Casey was asked about it during those in ensuing years Casey would just say. Tell Billy Martin to grow up. This is the profession. He chose people get traded every day. Grow up this happens. Move on so To Casey knew his place in the Hierarchy Casey's record certainly speaks for itself. He became the only man to manage a team to five consecutive world series championships. The streak ended with the Yankees failing to win the American League pennant in nineteen fifty four but staying on the Yanks resumed their dominance. Going on to win five more American league pennants in the next six years and two more world championships before strangles abrupt dismissal. After the nineteen sixty world series. You know after what you just said. What was the glue on that team? Was it just purely talent or was you? What made them so successful for such a long stretch. It was talented. I mean he was credited with inventing platooning where he pitch righties against lefties. And you know you mix and match so well but he had the talent to do it. He had and one time at seven infielders All of whom had been all-stars so what a luxury that was You know as he proved later on. If you don't have the players you can't really put very well and win any games. So it was the talent that he had there But he was a brilliant baseball mind as well he would remember. Oh this guy got two hits against that guy back in April off curve balls. I'm GONNA play him tonight. He just intuitively had that knowledge. Yeah that intuitive word is the one that I think The most from everybody that I've even thought of or or remember talking about him because one of his rivals was Al Lopez who played for him with the dodgers and braves wants and he said I'm single. I swear I don't understand. Some of the things he does. When he manages since he was in the forefront of a lot of this thinking where do you think that came from You mean where did Casey's knowledge come from? Where did this strategy which was very unique for baseball bat? Time part of it was? Casey was himself platoon by John. Mcgraw when he was a player on the giants He didn't invent platooning he just used it so successfully because he had the the players to work with but he saw in action under McGraw and Baseball Baseball Managers. Knew the righty. Lefty thing you know even back to the turn of the century So it wasn't like he suddenly discovered that well right handers can't hit right handed pitching as well as they can't lefthanded pitching but he was able to use it and use a successful. Marnie when you think about that period of time. I've often said that in reflection because I was very young. I don't remember it that much but I always said at least in New York that it was the golden age of baseball. Was I correct about that? I think the era of the fifties was the golden age for baseball. And I say that because you still had sixteen teams and now you had African American players being signed so it was sort of the maximum pool of players coming into the major leagues and of course as a Fan. We knew the four hundred players in the major leagues. It was much easier to get your arms around it then so felt much more comfortable for a fan base than it does today. Why was he? dumped after the sixty series There were several reasons. Part of it could have been age. He was seventy today. You just can't make a blanket decision like that without inviting lawsuits but the Yankees instituted retirement policy. And they felt at Seventy. It was time to go. Was the real motivation there. Though was the first base coach. Ralph how Was Seen as a brilliant manager in waiting and they knew that if they didn't make a decision on Casey stangl soon they were gonNA lose. How probably to Boston or Detroit? Both of whom were pursuing him. One of the things that I remembered as when he came out of retirement and a sense name was only out for one season and they talked him into managing. The mets and the mets were a new expansion team and they had absolutely no chance of winning and he responded that he said it's a great honor to be joining the knickerbockers. Now a New York baseball team that had seen its last game. Around the time of the civil war he might have remembered. The knickerbocker also reminds me of when he was hired by the Yankees in nineteen forty nine The CO owner of the team was Dan topping and he called him Bob Topping at the press conference. Not a good thing to do. You know with the mets. They were terrible as everybody pretty much knows. And he had a couple of great sayings he said one time. I've been in this game one hundred years but I see new ways to lose I never knew existed before. How bad were those mets in those first years well they were pretty awful and I lived in New York and I watch their games and they won forty they lost one hundred and twenty and they were very creative. They would come up. They would be winning three two two four to the eighth inning and they'd find a way to lose it. Interestingly though Casey was not as engaged with the Games as he had been with the Yankees he kind of turned over the lineup chores. The pitching rotation to his coaching staff notably Cookie Lavish Geno unsullied Amos and his center. Fielder the future hall of Famer Richie Ashburn kind of ran the game on the diamond positioning players and sort of being the manager on the field during the Games. Casey was often seen nodding off in the dugout and missing a few innings So things have changed dramatically between his last year of the Yankees and his first year with the mets and it was perfect perfect for his personality. Because I have a couple of other quotes he said when he was managing the mets and those first couple years he said one time I got one that can throw but can't catch one that can catch but can't throw and one who can hit but can't do either. Well I can tell you that My friend Steve Jacobson who was just breaking in as a sports writer with Newsday back then Had just gotten married. And he brought his wife to spring training and he introduced his wife to Casey and Casey bowed and said I'm only meeting for the first time. And you're already good enough to be my third string catcher one of the other ones. He once observed see that fellow over there. He's twenty years old in ten years. He has a chance to be a star. Now that fellow over there he's twenty years all also in ten years. He has a chance to be thirty truly did say that. Yeah what about the Go into that. Because that was an important part of his character and his personality. Well that was called Stengel lease and it. Kinda flourished during his Yankee years when he had the ability to double talk his way through answer either because he didn't want to answer or he was delaying it until he thought of the answer or he was just being entertaining and the most famous use of it of course was when he testified in front of a congressional committee in Nineteen Fifty Eight. He was asked one question. And he proceeded to give his life story instinct elise with no punctuation marks at all and became. It's still on Youtube. If somebody wants to see Casey Stengel testimony Mickey Mantle followed Casey and was asked one question and Mickey said I. My my answer is kind of just agree with whatever Casey said I tell you. He has some great ones and I hope people out there will look them up or try to hear them. If there can be found someplace. Warren Spahn who had briefly played understand with the braves and the mets comment at one time. I'm probably the only guy who worked for stangl before. And after he was a genius was he considered a genius he was. It became a genius during his Yankee. Years Spun Pitch for him. When he managed the hapless. Boston braves were then called the Boston. Bees and he cut more and spun. He didn't think he was In enough guts to throw it hitters and be tough on the mound and then spun went and became a World War. Two Hero showed you how. Smart Casey was back then but he. He later came back and pitched for Casey near the end of his career with the mets and one day. Kate. Warren Spahn and Yogi Berra form. The battery for the mets Yogi had moved over to the mets of that point and it was. I think remains the oldest battery in baseball history. Both of them being over forty hours he received for the by the media at that time but the media New York while you know it certainly was the media but it's different Back when he was managing as compared to today They loved them and that was his job and all these new young writers were coming on the scene and they just appreciated everything Casey had to say. One of them was Maury Allen who wrote for the New York Post who loved Casey so much and he wrote two or three books about Casey's witticisms about Casey's actions. He really loves the old man. And then when Casey finally died in nineteen seventy five. He died about eleven o'clock at night in Los Angeles and I wrote in the book It was one last favor for Maury Allen because the story couldn't make the morning papers and Maury wrote for the afternoon paper. Yeah one of the great things about his life was A. This is a love story almost in a sense because he was very close to his wife. His wife fanatic stroke and he was by her side to the very end even live two and a half years longer than he did What was behind that relationship? It was a very loving relationship. They never had children together. They married when they were both in their thirties. And those days that was considered too old to have children so she was by his side for most of his career. Traveling with the team Being there all during spring training and everything and She was an elegant woman. She did him well. She didn't proud It was that memoir of hers from Nineteen Fifty Eight that really opens my eyes to how classy she was as well as the beautiful relationship that the two of them shared. We only have a minute left. Or what do you want people to take away from this book Marty? Well in the course of doing the book I came to realize that despite winning all those pens and being in the world series he's becoming a forgotten figure People under forty looked at me with blank stares when I would mention what I was working on so I'd like for him to sort of be reintroduced to the baseball public because he certainly deserves it How do I mean how many tenants do you have to win to be remembered but he was such a funny guy and engaging guy and You know I say when I wrote the book the stories tell themselves all I had to do was put it on paper and get out of the way well. Congratulations another wonderful book from Marty Appel. I appreciated Marty and again. I want everybody to check this book. It's called Casey Stengel baseball's greatest character. Intuitive but yeah you know so they they are way behind. It's it's it's kind of Funky. And when the for instance Super Tuesday was happening you know Tuesday a lot earlier here than it was there. I'm looking for the results on Wednesday morning noon before on Wednesday before I'm getting the Super Tuesday results absolutely and quite the results they were. Let's talk about the presidential stuff here briefly. Well what I think is awesome is how you know Michael Bloomberg you know after spending five hundred million dollars half a billion dollars drops in the advertising industry. I'd say thank you Mike. Yeah he couldn't sway the election. The way couple hundred grand facebook ads from the Russians could do well. It's the Russians. After all the Democrats terrible policy it's not putting up the worst most unpalatable candidate possible. It's the Russians just like I'm GonNa get the country to behave like. Yeah there you go. Mike. This is a sheer way of getting everybody's oppositional defiant disorder and everybody wants to be told they can't have a big gulp. Yeah well I'm glad he's out Elizabeth Warren out. She but she did say that every the Bernie Sanders is responsible for his candidates his supporters which is interesting. How can you be responsible for your supporters will see left collectivists? Kind of believe crazy stuff like that. It really is. Yeah but what if what if a KKK guys sent money to the Elizabeth Warren Campaign. Is She then risk capable for the KKK? Only if they send it to a Republican. That's right yeah like I if a if a if a Ku Klux Klan guys sent You know like fifty cents to trump. Oh yeah trump's in collusion but yeah if they send it if they send it to Elizabeth Warren no absolutely not and yeah. I mean that's a silly silly thought the two has I guess at this point Joe Biden went from an afterthought doing nothing in Iowa to the presumptive nominee at this point. It's crazy. Well my conspiracy theory is is that Joe Biden is. He's he's the guy that they're gonNA put in there because well first of all he is been there boy for a long time. Yeah he's been a different candidate. He's been a different politician the seventies the eighties the ninety s the teens have. He's been doing it a long time. But but he's also he's also Bat Guano insane. Well he's well he's I think he's. I think he's suffering. I mean I'm not a psychiatrist but he he's definitely showing signs of dementia. But my theory is is that what they're gonNA do. What state as it. Yeah I mean. And and he's He forgot Barack Obama's name a couple of times speech. Well I just was fascinated to find out how he found out about roaches that day when he was talking about his hairy legs. Yeah I have these Harry legs. They turn they turn blonde in the sun and I go to the swimming pool in the little children would climb my legs in stroke by hair. And that's how I found out about roaches and I'm going. Yeah he's he's he's he's going to lead the world but the thing is is. I really believe that Hillary Clinton is going to be brought into the convention as his running mate and they're also talking about Michelle Obama and it's going to be a totally broker convention. Where none of these people who who believe that. The electoral college is bad because their vote didn't count. You WanNA see your vote. Really not count. Just Watch and wait until the convention so my theory is is what they're going to do they're Gonna. Bring Bring Hillary and Queen Hillary and then like right after he gets if he won which I doubt it but you know you never know what's going to happen. But if he wins what they want to do is they'll probably take that twenty-fifth amendment stuff because they've been pushing that A. It's basically saying that if the president has been deemed by the cabinet to be incompetent or or whatnot you know that they can remove them and put the president Put the vice president in charge. Okay so so then. They put Hillary in charge. So then they'd put all worked out and they'd have Madam President Because You know I think these people are I think. Democratic Party is just that delusional. Kimchi get anything. Done as Somebody who has been placed in as opposed to I mean there's no mandate at that point right. Well I don't know but it's like this. I believe that they do have that. Plan to take down America and bring it into a globalist Type of situation the ball Paul Perch the perch society. Well Yeah and this is something I like the Q. Guys have been talking about but I I really. Yeah after well. Here's the thing I've been kind of studying the stuff for like thirty years like it started with the Kennedy assassination. It always does. I really think that the cabal that wacked John Kennedy has been in charge in like trump was an anomaly and he was never supposed to come in and I think there is all. You must not be in charge. If he could come in right. Well you know I think we had some guardian angels in in the military who are patriots and they they they have anything to do with the vote counting though well it wasn't about the vote counting what I think they did was. They picked to guy with enough name. Recognition enough of his own money and convinced him to run. And I think that's kind of happened. Yeah the thing that Biden managed to stop with Sanders is what the Republicans didn't see coming with trump's so I believe here's my conspiracy theory that Biden picked up the phone and called all the other candidates and basically said hey look sanders is going to get thirty to forty percent in every state. Because that's his what he's able to pull the only way we can beat him as we have one candidate that can get sixty and they can't control him. I mean he may be. He may be I believe Bernie. Sanders is a stink in Communist. But you know I mean. Let's let's face it the communists. That isn't paid off. Well I think I think in the I think in the last election they offered him silver lead and I think I think he made the right choice. 'cause you know you saw. He bought that new house. Right after the Primary could've had the money anyway. But Yeah I mean I I. I think there's a lot more going on and I think you have to be naive to like think that there isn't some rough stuff going on but by the most important position in the world. Yeah so one would think there's a certain amount of rough stuff that goes on. My question is is it. Really the Wilson. It's the most public position but like you know the they didn't say powerful. I set important. Well the shooter shifting Reptilians that actually don't want their name in the paper. I say that with my tongue in cheek I hear they live their Stapleton Airport. Well no that's just that's just their Hilton. They hang out at every. Every airport has a little place underneath for the prescription delivered elicited. Well well actually actually got their main main place in the Vatican library and then like Buckingham Palace here. Of course I'm just. I'm just quoting David. I I remember reading David. I for the first time in Nineteen ninety-six reading. Wow this is either really good. Science fiction screwed. I do love the notion that shape shifting Lizard People. But most of it's just like this. So the corona virus is all the news you have economies crashing stock markets up. Bits down while I'm sorry down it's up. It's it's back down again. We don't know what's going on. I got a couple of stories here. It looks like Amazon and Ebay or now going after price gougers and this is always a phenomenon whenever some catastrophe occurs. Now I haven't gone and looked at what the price gouging you know the story. I didn't know that this was happening. It was just news to me when I saw the news stories. But Anyway we'll get into that here in the near future. I I want to go to Harry calling in from Fort Wayne Harry. You're on free talk live. What's on your mind all right? Hey how's it going to talk about the corona virus? That's all right so I kinda dig your opinion on it. You Want my opinion about the virus. Okay well Florida before I guess you can say so basically from my understanding that it's just something that it's practice goods from other like media tensions like the economy like how you just mentioned the word or something like a line there. What's that that I believe? You need to state that. I didn't understand really good and I turn anyway so I was dating that you believe that. The crow virus just some virus. That's just distracting from something like the economy like you mentioned. Further Corona virus has killed fewer people in the amount of time. That's been in the news. The flu has and so. I think it's interesting that people focus on this This this lesser problem with a greater problem facing them. But I don't know I know I do not think the corona viruses some kind of news conspiracy to keep us from talking about the economy. But you know I mean there. There are important issues out there sure. Well there's there's been a couple of things that I've been reading in looking at about. This thing is that it's definitely being used by the Chinese Communist Party. I think as an excuse to crackdown on dissidents. It's very convenient to be able to lock everybody up in their apartments and and then say oh well. You've got corona virus and then take them out and then they died of corona virus. So you had the Hong Kong protests going on big time. You had other. They're they're getting on point and they're getting Squirrel Squirrel e with Taiwan and that might be an excuse and then of course the media who has has it in for doing whatever they can to derail the president president trump. They'RE GONNA use the fear to drum up like for example. I saw Bill Maher back. Young couple of years ago was saying the only way to get rid of trump is to have a recession. Well if that means people are going to have to starve so be it. You know these. You know the limousine liberals sitting there so I think that yes absolutely. People are going to use this as a black swan event to try to to try to do whatever they can to bring about an agenda now is it. Is it a hoax though? I it's a real virus. What do you think Kerry I believe? I believe it is a real virus. This is what my understanding is that. Yeah people have died from the flu like because plutot came long long ways to go. You know what I'm saying back I understand right When like when the first settlers came to America didn't they came with like some certain disease that Connie killed like wiped out. Yeah there were actually a variety of diseases. But it's because it's because the people here in the North American continent didn't have immunity. Same thing happened in. The Maryanne is actually happens everywhere right. And you know it's funny because Lodging at it is just because All Hoxha because How Corona virus is doing and he I I do. I do believe it is not a hope. Do believe it is danger and I do believe it. Kills and so y y y affect us. Is that the problem because they said that ten p Okay from my understanding ten people have died. And there's like two hundred cases of the corona virus. Okay so how can you really track all down knowing people really have had because people in China the only reason why they're getting it's just because it how many what's population of China like eight million? I don't know I wait. Two billion billion and guess what China is very. It's kind of a small country versus us. We're the country and we can same size same size geographically China China's exactly the same thing I just don't think the states has enough tests in enough locations. Supposedly somebody in Bradenton Florida in my home town came up with it. Well we awareded Manatee Memorial Hospital tests. Do they have? And how do we know skunks call here? Scuttlebutt is that there's been ten cases here in Saipan but that skuld. They've said things but we don't know because it's difficult to get the tests out and you only know if somebody's been given a test anyway. It's a good topic and interest in it Larry from Indiana. That he's GonNa talk about which he knows. He has a tough audience with me. Go ahead Larry Okay. Here goes now. It says in the coming disaster law and order decency leadership will come to an end and oppression will be the rule the whole people will be anarchy. Indeed leaders have misled and confused. The people for this reason God has entered his core room to bring former charges against this nation for their covenant violation versus thirteen and fifteen. He has entered his legal brief against the elders and guy and government officials making against them. This charge they have crushed the for and have used the poverty and defencelessness of the week as their source of wealth and shrimp. I go on that long but I gotta say that is some good stuff right there it is it is. I mean the last part of that is so true because now you see all the five zero one. Three charitable corporations coming in you. See all the people here coming to do good or climate change itself and and the people doctors and just like this virus and stuff we have gone on. Now that's part of it. Somebody's getting paid off big time in the medical industry for this this Disease that does not amount to as much as the flu viruses causing damage on people but we are being as running up to play poker. Where's the little we're going out? I've seen so many stupid looking people today. Downtown with big mask over. Their face isn't that they can do something to help themselves. I mean people need to get it. Get a grip and see what they're being used. I mean sick people with cancer Homeless People people with AIDS People with addiction problems are all been praying about vultures and and that is when they do that they only create more poor people more homeless people so for them to cite the blood out of then talk their guts out so we need to really wake up Americans. Whoever's out there we solve this a man we solve it Larry Powder. We saw it but waking up and stopped going for everything they say. I'M IN CORONA IS I mean. Give it a bear name right. Everybody loves beer. Funny Interesting Corona out of Kobe. Nineteen no and now they want to have our state where the government governor came out today. There's one case right now. They're everybody's rejoicing about the one case. I mean it's like your state ain't got a corona as well. You need to go get one. You can get an extra money from the federal government for Your Sake. People so means they one good thing now. I'm getting my radio from C. Christ available to listen to the program. They do have high-quality radio. Thanks for the call. Larry see crane count. The company is known as the producer of the best radios in the world. Am FM sort of. And you get shortwave and whether channel and all that stuff in one One Go. I don't know if I consider the I don't know what the relationship to the Bible Prophecy and and cope with nineteen is but nonetheless. I think it's Leeann Larry's got some interesting opinions. Well here's the Bible off. That has some very good insights whether you you see it as the inspired God or just great literature might have just been. Isaiah talking about the The invasion of Babylon well. You know history rhymes you know. So there's there's There's certain things they come in but The Corona Virus Where IT GETS. Its name is of from the shape of the virus itself. It's basically like the corona son. Yeah that's that's kind of how they got the name and then the beer where they got their name from two well corona means crown right now interests asset if you're into the queue and non conspiracy stuff was listening to the X. Twenty to report the other day. I know nothing of this stuff. But but but Apparently the good guys are winning winning. What well like. The deep state is being plowed under. And there's people that are you know. There's there's a war going on which I believe It's been going on for a while. But the levels of deep state exists a criminal. Yeah like a but one of the theories is like the criminals of the deep state around the world. The globalist will start coming down with globalists' well the globalist like the corona virus being like the crown virus. You know you'll have like for example. The pope currently just got a cough and apparently apparently like the Ministry of one of the one of the the vice president or the prime minister but one of the big wigs in Iran. Just died from it. Yeah so like according there's a theory going out that that that's Kinda like the symbolism there and I don't know but you know as far as the whole biblical thing goes I mean. Yeah what we're going through some pretty biblical times when as I said history rhymes so yeah well is it is it really biblical or is the reaction. Yes Biblical. I think that That the history rhymes as he says. These sorts of things have gone on for a very long time not to say that they created viruses to go after the poor. But certainly those in power. The wealthy and those in power used to always be the same. Now they're not exactly. Bledsoe's has power. But bezos isn't the state whereas the state was always the wealthy and vice versa throughout human history and now since the industrial revolution we have some some loss of parody in that area but it's unlikely say in Biblical Times that they spread some kind of a bio weapon but they did take advantage of the poor whenever they could have had plagues and the Boo Bonnet. Play back in the things that the twelve or thirteen hundred started by belief in Christianity. Those priests didn't like cats. Well well actually actually they. The plague plague started in China. Yeah it was brought to Europe through The ships which we had the rats and at the time when people were dropping dead they thought it was the Judgment Day. Thought it was the end of the world thought. Jesus was coming back. Everybody thinks that's the case so time you know it's an and I'm not saying that Jesus isn't coming back or he is. Chris believe he came back in the first century. Well the the one thing I think all Christians really need to understand is that you know like it says right there in the Bible. If you're going to believe in that book that says no man knows the time or the date so when I see people on TV. Like I used to watch Jack Van impe because he had this crazy heat miser hair in anyway but but they had they. They kept trying to set dates. It was wrong. Oh sure sure it will. But you know hey take that for what it's worth just an opinion of talk show host one. That's been right a few times in this particular tough subject nonetheless so we were talking about the The Corona situation and specifically. I wanted to talk about Ebay and Amazon. Going after price gougers so It says here headline from Daily Mail Amazon bans ten thousand users for price gouging and roof. Some rooms moves a million products a sales of hand sanitizer rocket with two bottles advertised for one hundred and twenty dollars amid corona virus outbreak. And then the Ebay one says Just the headline. Ebay BANS ALL MASKS REGARDLESS OF VIRUS. Claims this includes besides price gouging also some claims regarding You know you can't make health claims about stuff so that's like the FDA kind of things. And I don't know what health claims were being made. Cure yourself with corona with Basque. I don't know but to some extent. Don't we just? Are we just sort of responsible as consumers the idea that you get upset that somebody's trying to sell two bottles of hand sanitizer for one hundred and twenty dollars like here? I was ignorant of this knowledge for the last week. And somehow somebody was it. Just outraged right. It is probably disturbed their their digestion. Regularity right probably lost some sleep. This person is really upset about the notion that somebody dared hundred twenty dollar price tag of two bottles hand sanitizer. I gotta laugh because I just I just saw something facebook's wonderful for just making you want to have the corona virus succeed because apparently throwing humanity. Somebody's shared a shared with an article. It was a serious article. I can't remember what state it was but I'm thinking was Washington or one of those hippy. Dippy states up there was like basically western Washington the police the Police Department They're offered to test people's Methamphetamine for corona virus. And I'm thinking. Is that a way to catch meth users source of income on man. If if you're if you're smoking math you've got more problems than the corona virus anyway and I mean just so. Let's say that somebody is price gouging right now. We don't know the prices. This funny thing people think it says something to do with what it costs to produce the item war. What things have cost in certain but we all know a bottle of water. That's in a thirty pack at the grocery store cost significantly less than it does at the ball game at a major league baseball game. Well it's supply and demand is what it is that's what that's what pricing is supply and demand and the supply of hand. Sanitizer has somehow bottomed out in the United States or around the world. Then the question you need to ask yourself is do. I wish to have the option of purchasing hand sanitizer or not Because you can't choose what price somebody put something at. You could only choose what price you buy it at. And that's the power of the consumer. So you know if you've got a threshold for hand sanitizer that's ten dollars to bottles that that'd be enough We'll find find the big deal for that and then by that and hopefully you'll get it but if you but you know it's completely somebody's right to sell hand sanitizer for one hundred twenty dollars bottles now. Let me give this example. We've all seen the bugs bunny cartoons. Bugs bunny is going through the desert you know. Look Water Water Right We've seen it all and you're looking for water in the desert. There's nobody around. Suddenly somebody POPs up over a Dune has has a nice big bottle of water for you but he wants to sell it for one hundred and fifty dollars. Now you're GONNA die the next two or three dunes or you're gonNA pay one hundred and fifty of these weird green pieces of paper for a bottle of water. Those that's your choice now. Should he have to sell it at the price? The grocery store hasn't been transported it out there. He took his time took his energy. He has the bottle. It's his I mean I suppose you could try to kill him for it. That's another option. But you might as well just pay one hundred fifty dollars for the bottle of water because otherwise you'll be dead and sanctimonious at that happened to me now with water but as in the Persian Gulf aboard the ship and I ran out of clean t shirts. And if you showed up on the bridge for watch and your t shirt was dirty you got chewed out and With a ship store was out of t shirts and my job was particularly dirty. One man I needed a t shirt and this jerk said t shirt I got a t shirt cost you fifty bucks fifty dollars and and I I handed over fifty bucks for this frugal loon. Bvd or whatever it was. And I didn't get in trouble on watch so you know it is what it is. It taught me the economic lesson. That's for sure right. I mean at some point in life we all have to be taught this particular lesson about Preparedness Petty Officer. Anderson's going to hell for that and this is. This is a a moment in time for people to think about preparedness. Because you know. Nobody owes you hand sanitizer. Nobody owes you a mask. Nobody owes you food. Nobody owes you anything or price on any of those things. Nobody does that to you. The fact that you were pushed out of a womb. Which by the way is the most ordinary thing a human can do right. It is not a human right to have hand sanitizer ladies and gentlemen. So that's it you got it. That's it the hand sanitizer is that persons to sell at whatever price they wished. You don't like the price move to the next auction. It's not your business or get some knowledge in realized that I don't need to go buy Purell hand sanitizer. There are other things out there alcohol alcohol bodily Jim beam worse. Things could happen with that. Yeah but But you talk about about the human right we have a human rights to to engage involuntary commerce with each other without you know we have a we have a right to America. We don't well apparently not here. Well here's here's the thing. The question is I think I think if you live in the People's Republic of China you have the right to free speech and keep and bear arms it just that their government there doesn't recognize that right and violates it so you know it's kind of like it'll go right that is not recognised isn't very useful. It's not but it's true. I suppose I mean like which were given by God. And that's the premise that most people operate under for whatever reason that God gave you the right and whether someone chooses to recognize it or not Oftentimes that requires a certain level of Struggle so it's like the king in England. The son of the king somehow has his crown taken by his uncle. Well histories just going to say. The uncle got the crown unless the sun comes and raises an army and kills the uncle and does those sorts of things. Well this goes back to the quote. Dag made from starship troopers last week. That violence enforce basically solve just about everything. It's it's what it's all about. It's like basically you know it's not. Who has the gold rules? It's who has the guns rules or the sword or whatever or the will and you know people don't want to acknowledge that yeah. I do believe that although I'm not of the of the opinion that guns or the thing the Second Amendment people hold on a second is the most important amendment. That's I don't do that however I'm of the opinion that guns or the indication of a free person right if you can have a gun then you're probably what is it say just gut. I'm McMurdo reporting for the Liberty. Beat reminding you spread liberty with a smile thing findings which began just moments ago. Let's go to that now. Particular study this report was based on the that that determination was made after considering someone who only smokes when a bars parties ends of smoking maybe fifteen cigarettes or regular. Smokers are smoking hundred fifty to two hundred cigarettes each week so we feel that. It's just obvious as long as you actually buy the cigarettes and you only smoked them. All consuming the alcohol than the risk of getting lung cancer basically mostly negligible just common sense. This announcement comes on the heels of the surgeon. General's last announcement that drinking and driving fine if you ate a lot that day or if it's a route you take all the time sober moving. On the Japanese Space Agency has announced plans to put a school girl on the moon by two thousand. Fifteen is the onion news network. A is an hour from the US. Mariana islands it is marked with you and Alex Dave and you can call in and talk about whatever is on your mind. That's what we do here on. Free Talk Live. That's the whole point. That's why we get on. The air is to take your calls. The number eight five five four five zero three seven three three. It's eight fifty five four fifty free as in freedom and we spent most of the first hour talking about the corona virus. And that sort of thing so you know any any. Wrap up thoughts on that guys. Well you know I I I was just thinking to myself that you know you get three thousand people dead from the corona virus and everybody wants to wear a mask yet. You got thirty million people in the world with HIV. And it's hard to get people to wear rubbers perhaps perhaps perhaps That's a relevant point. Put your masks on people. One other thing too and this is my favorite theory about how it got started. There was a manager of the BIOLAB was arrested for selling the laboratory animals to local meat market and I think they missed an opportunity. They could have had it marketed as reese's pieces. Do they ever since monkeys there is just? I did get to meet a lady here who had been hiking in the Wuhan province and got bit by a monkey. I think that's some of the. That's one of the best little sentences I've heard in some time I was right. I can Wuhan and got bit by a monkey. Well I actually eight monkey. Once when I was in the Philippines somebody was giving me the give me some meat you know and as it was weird it tasted kind of like pork but So I've ever eaten monkey and that's why I came up with the racist pieces gang little bits of it got a story here this is. This doesn't really affect the folks in the Marianas but it does affect lots of people in the United States. So an Idaho lawmaker. Introduces a bill to repeal property taxes. Statewide one Idaho. Lawmaker wants to make property taxes. A thing of the past says whatever is the Guy Jason. Monks is the assistant majority leader in the State House and wants to completely eliminate property taxes but raise the state sales tax over five percent. Monk wants to do away with the entire thing so he introduced the house. Bill so I think the different taxes have sort of different levels of immorality for instance and I think property tax is an indication that you don't own your property the serfs in the time of the nobles were given a little piece of land that they could You know farm and do those sorts of things it was theirs in so much as they could keep the other serfs off that particular land should they wish but it wasn't so much as they could keep all the fruits of their labor because the noble demanded something called quit. Rents calling the American people taxers. They are precisely that. And that's because they. I mean if you try if you think you own your land try not paying the rent on that land to the I mean the property taxes to the government for a few years and see what your ownership of that property looks like because an owner can't have taken away here on the Maryalice. Some people are able to own property in a manner called fee simple now e simple isn't the level of a local title title is reserved for the noble and the government's but it is a higher form of ownership than the kind of titling that goes on in the United States where you have to pay a property tax so I just kind of wanted to throw it out. What do you guys think about? Sales TAX VERSUS PROPERTY TAX. Here IT'S ONE BILL. You don't have to pay but you know there's more there's a bigger bill when you go to the pay by the plastic crap at Walmart well in the constitution. The only taxes actually mentioned our duties in excises from you know yeah. It speaks to speaks to the taxes for the FEDS. This is generally going to be a local statewide tax. That kind of thing. I don't know what goes on and I would say that Still stocks is probably the most ethical tax. Write the ideas that they're building the roads right. That's what the guy who is show below the gas tax which I consider to be the most ethical. Here's why that's a sales tax right. It is a it is but a specific specific one. I'd like to point out that there is a recreational vehicle fuel that if you don't use the roads you can buy this fuel and not available at every gas station but some of them have it and if you or it's for farm vehicles so that kind of thing so you can buy that fuel and if you're not gonNA use their roads that you don't have to pay their tax on it now normally if. I'm filling up the LAWNMOWER. I'M NOT GONNA drive farther to get one gallon of gas. I'm willing to pay the tax for the The lawnmowers gas. But if I was running a tractor all day then I'd certainly want to get my diesel and not pay tax on it. Go ahead but yet. No sales tax could next the services provided with the revenue generation to the closest extent. Possible when you're engaging in commerce the government is most likely involved somehow whether it's the roads the law enforcement the fire protection it's generally relates to commerce in some way shape or form where owning land. What is the government doing for lent? Probably nothing right away. The assumption is that I got a piece of land right and I'm getting taxed one hundred dollars a year on the land while I put a house on the land and suddenly my tax goes two thousand dollars year. The government has done nothing and I actually had this happen. I'm building a House. And now the value the land is going up in like they have the audacity to come out when I was halfway through the project and then begin the taxation projects Process on a half built house. I'm like every moved into this thing. And you want to tax me on it. And they're like YEP get out and I ran them off is they. They just wanted to look through the well. They usually use property taxes for schools. I fake sure can use any tax. But what if you don't have children in? I mean that's if you're never going to send your kid to a government school. Yeah Yeah exactly. I mean Yeah my son has had on the property he's lived on taxes have been excised for other to send other people's kids to school in many cases. Kids that are driven to school. A much nicer vehicles that he gets driven around in and You know they're just taking money. That could have been used for his education and sending it to other people's kids that's just theft ladies and gentlemen. That's just all that is that is. The Teacher's Union has figured out how to muscle in theft. Well I've come to the conclusion at governments are nothing but a Mafia with good public relations. So they got flax. It's really our well. We know it's good public relations. I mean you know you look at it. It's like what is the government. It's it's a group of people that enforce their will on others. That is fundamentally what they do. Indeed and yes so. I mean I think this is interesting. This Idaho lawmaker choosing to get rid of property taxes. I hate property taxes. I don't know which ones at one point in my life. I would have said that it was a it was the most moral form of tax simply because then landowners and I don't know exactly what is somewhat efficient right a land value tax as some potential for economic perspective. But if you're looking at from ethical taxation and stuff perspective obviously can't justify. I think we can right. We live in a world where for whatever reason people accept the notion that taxes are. Okay I don't get it when whenever I hear. Somebody online arguing against taxation being theft. They always come up with a a some kind of pragmatic argument well without taxes. How would we build the roads? Well I didn't ask you that. Because they used to say when black people were slaves in the United States? How will we pick the cotton? Is that an acceptable statement. Ladies and gentlemen how we pick the cotton I mean if I wandered around today at every time I saw I wonder how we pick the cotton the people would think I was stupid and crazy. I believe in the dread Scott Decision Justice taty said well then robes ain't gonna wash themselves and so the a pragmatic response to taxation is theft is simply. It doesn't make any sense you know if it's a moral argument. The taxation is that you need to make a remorseful rebuttal. That somehow taxation isn't that I'd love to hear that ladies and gentlemen because I completely befuddled. I didn't even get the argument of the other side. So if you know the argument on the other side. Perhaps you've been Mona on a make. The argument on the other side. The number is eight five five four five zero three seven three three. Are you sure that you're gonNA have a great retirement or did you have some doubts? Because in my family we've taken some steps and those steps. They started quite some time ago. It takes Takes a little bit of time to to build these things up but we instituted what? Tom Young the author and founder of. Cfo Project has proposing here. And how you could be debt free in nine years or less we did it in less and that included our mortgage without spending a single dollar more and you can do it too instead of building plan. Thomas Show you how to create strategies now now. This wasn't the sum total of what we did but it was part of what we did an important part of what we did and and with his book save money without penalties in this little government involvement is possible his new book the Family Money Farm. And we talk about it quite a bit here on the online because here on the show because it's important I think For you to take control of your family's wealth. There's an Idaho lawmaker. And frankly another one in another place North Dakota. He wants the voters to decide to if they should have. They should abolish property taxes and replace the revenue with other sources an oil tax from the legacy fund so these lawmakers are getting the idea of getting rid of property tax. Now if you're sitting in Long Island right now and you're paying thirty thousand dollars a year in property tax. You can't imagine how the government can somehow function without property taxes but a lot of places property taxes are extraordinarily low and probably not worth the time and energy they put into You know putting these pieces of paper out mailing them all that other stuff Some people pay are paying paying right now in the United States for a house a property with a house on it the domicile on it less than three hundred dollars. So you know you got to wonder. Sometimes if it's even worth it so I guess my question is that. Although I'm of the opinion all taxes are theft except for gasoline taxes. I'll make the argument that those are voluntary because the gas station can choose whether or not to sell gas. So that's a decision and they can choose and the consumer can choose whether or not to buy gas will be used on the road now. Obviously if you go to the recreational vehicle pump and get fuel that is intended to not be used on the road and you pump it into your car right there. You're going to obviously violating some rule. But you know the roads have to get paid for in some manner and you're clearly using them. If you're using the vehicle you're pumping into the vehicle. So I mean I guess that that to me. That's the most effective way to do it. So gas tax. I'M GONNA call voluntary and that's the only tax. I'm willing to call that and it's only because you have the option of buying another fuel that isn't tax but property tax to me means that you're a vassal of the the Lord and you don't really own your property and I consider that a bad thing sales tax. Well how am I going to do you know? How are you going to not how you going to do? Business AND NOT COLLECT SALES TAX. So that's obviously a form of theft. Whatever but which one is the worst the best the most effective the easiest to implement these kind of things because we do taxes exist any thoughts on this Alex? Yeah so I would say the key to look at with. Everything is incentives. So let's take out the ethics. I don't think Davidge person cares about taxation being theft or any of that. They're interested in. How do I get the most bang for my buck and make society as wealthy and prosperous as possible that I think many people could get behind so the question is how do you do that? I would say that a government support organizations to give to expect to get the Best Bang for Your Buck. Well and the whole incentive thing. You know you've never gone to customs to pick up a BOX OF CIGARS. That was a birthday present for you. That your brother paid seventy five dollars for it. And then they charge you one hundred and sixty dollars tax you know. I mean there are certain taxes here that they call sin taxes which I really just I it. It Eric's me. It goes back to the whole Bloomberg blue banning big gulp kind of big brother crap into your life and and you know so. They have these different taxes on things like alcohol yet. We have more people getting becoming alcoholics every year then right if if the syntax is intended to prevent alcoholism on this particular island. It is failing. Yeah yeah or to raise his smoking or taxes on cigarettes people. Most people who want to smoke are gotTA smoke and the fact. The fact of the matter is is the same thing with marijuana or any other substance. Yeah once you tax device taxes don't work or they don't work well enough no. I'm saying that the vice taxes are loaded malarkey made up by a bunch of people who think they can be your nanny and they just don't understand that hey there's a supply demand same thing with the whole war on drugs. I mean I'm sorry. People want to get high in back in the day. You know. Thomas Edison was a full blown coke fiend but he was productive and didn't bother anybody but you know same thing with Sigmund. I don't think there was a problem. Yeah I mean it wasn't even the legal. Yeah I mean there were a whole bunch of people throughout history that like did drugs and because it wasn't like the cause celebre at the time they just said well he likes his nose candy in. You know Edgar Allan Poe's most likely an opium addict Yup so I have a confession. I quit smoking cigars. When Obama in two thousand nine implemented the tax. That was supposed to go to children's hospital or something like that. Yeah but this particular syntax on cigars stopped me from smoking. I began to taking chances and so I mean it was effective if the goal was to prevent some people from smoking. It was me. Because I know that money's fungible and every dollar the government takes for the general fund to help kids in Hospitals. It's also it takes money out of the general fund to buy guns to kill the by bombs that kill people kids in foreign country. Yeah Yeah So. I can't participate in that if I'd known how to grow my own tobacco or they had or whatever back then maybe I would've switched at the time. I just quit. So yeah push back a little bit. So we were taking out the ethics aside purely pragmatic pragmatism. So if the government has to raise a certain amount of revenue. Is it better that they raise it on people doing things so lower productivity or people who thinks that increase productivity tax business and people could argue that cocaine made Thomas Edison more productive? And how many of cocaine the Nikola. Tesla got his inspiration from God. I'm not advocating drug use by the way I'm not coming down either side. And the Tesla Edison Debate to Edison was huge on intellectual property. Which I disagree with test was a jerk. Eight five five four five zero three seven three. As I like to focus more on the pragmatism very established morality or the lack of so. Let's just pretend you have some new country new territory just create. You need to raise revenue for something hard you set it up. So it has maximum benefit and minimum downside. So I would say the the first talks you on is a land value tax. So there's a difference between property tax and land value tax okay land value taxes taxes. The pure raw plant right. So if you build a skyscraper in this new hypothetical city or country Dow innocuous talks only the underlying land. So let me ask you this about that. So land is relative based on a few things location being one of them right and so every piece of land has a monopoly on its location. Yes it's you know. There's that gas station. That's there's four gas stations on a corner one of them's on the good corner and nobody can even tell why it's a good corner you know. But there's that good corner one. Or for instance a piece of property in downtown. Manhattan the same size property in upstate New Hampshire or onsite pan or wherever is Sarasota? Florida is all different. So you know. There's the view these sorts of things. How do you determine the value of the land? I don't think that's a huge problem. There's many different systems could do could be the price you paid. You can also have a system where US you determine the price yourself but the government has the right to buy it back or we could say the private owner of this private territory. That's an interesting way to has the right to buy. That's how you know how something much something's worth say. Okay you name the price and I'll either tax you on that price or buy it from you there. So there's a way around that what's on paper. Devalue is a dollar but then you give guy fifty thousand dollars without it being written down. It's what's what's the price ship things for example you ship things and they they have here in the we have customs separate from. Us Customs right right. So let's say you are shipping piece of equipment. I'm just saying a hypothetical not saying that. This actually happens wink winked. You're shipping a piece of equipment from Guam to Saipan pan cake. Customs wants to take a wet bite out of your on that and so basically a way around that is saying. Oh well this this drill bit or whatever. It is wherever piece of equipment it is. The doll volley the value of it is one dollar and so then in this system the government customs could say all right well by for one dollar that would get people to immediately research raising prices. Because they don't want to be able to. They sell their valuable thing for a dollar so this out with a car with a used cars. You know I mean but what about what I'm saying is is like I think I think when you when you do stuff like that it incentivizes dishonesty it. It incentivizes people like this. There's I think there's a certain reasonable amount one could could could tax but then when you take it on the value as I. It's it's like it's like one of these things where I think the more you tax people the more likely they are going to try to find ways of cheating on their taxes swam designing after a land value tax. What do you think is the The next thing to throw in. Because I think that there's some arguments for the key government actually owning the land take for instance. You had mentioned in the break. The Louisiana Purchase United States government bought Louisiana bought Alaska on a bunch of things. I mean how can an individual who has land those particular areas really claim that they own it? Yeah well I think the government could probably make a lot of money by selling its public lands to people. I think they certainly could. I mean that's that's one way of generating revenue and you know I. I don't see why the government should really own wise cell when you can lease. Well that's sort of what they do. Well my well the question again. It comes down to what is government is. If it's truly there to serve the people then how can we justify a lot of the government taking from us and it's kind of funny you bring up the Bible the Biblical prophecy thing? I one of my favorite books of Samuel Samuel is a great one and a lot of action adventure in there but like the people of Israel were clamoring for a king. Everybody else has one week. And then and then the Samuel comes up. Yeah you know what would happen if you have a king. He'll take your son's resigning his daughters for his Harem and take tax your land. He'll he'll he'll he'll basically do what governments do and you know and it's like wow. I mean in that case you know the Bible's actually kind of a libertarian. Book if you look at it. That Samuel A lot of Libertarians. And that. And that's why I say the government is all the government is doing is charging you protection money man. It's a mafia you know. Hey Nice Nice homestead you have. It'd be a shame if something happened to it. Yeah I agree with your point that the this is what the state is doing. I think it's an error to think that you could ever get rid of some sort of hierarchy. There's always going to be a land a rule center well. Well here's the thing though. I think if okay maybe we should just be more realistic about the way we teach our children about government in basically instead of the teachers teach them high and mighty high and mighty like you know it. Just say hey look. It's a necessary evil. And we just gotTa deal with it because this is how things happen. Like for example. I wouldn't go that far. That's unnecessary we need an army. I'M NOT GONNA fight against that idea. Well actually the constitution we have. We have a fulltime navy in our armies only supposed to be part-time right but we need a way of protect collective defense and I'm willing to go win in chip in my buckle five that freedom costs but it's from a song from team America but but the thing about about sitting there and acting like taxes are in some way moral i. I don't know I just it's I certainly don't think that it's moral But I think you know that taxation you're gonNA need generate revenue right. You can have a private society and you're going to still have a government. It's completely voluntary. You choose to move several built an island in the ocean with Donald Bunch of sand. Love to see you there so we were talking Alex about the sort of relative practicality of certain types of taxes and you had some thoughts. I WanNa make sure you get your time to discuss that. Yes so land. Value is my number one. I would say in terms of improving the system if we're talking about we're in the existing world taxes are unethical but we have to live in the reality we live in. Let's switch from property for those of you that have keep in mind in the northern Mariana Islands. We don't have those Property Tax thinks we have freedom for the rest of the country who suffers. I do the tyranny of property tax might be beneficial a pros. Your local region switched to land value talks because the problem with property tax overland value is property taxes the improvement of land. Do you want which I hate to want? Empty Land or do you want land have ranches and houses and schools and other buildings so it's counter productive to tax people improving land. It just encourages hordic Chris a lower tax burden if somebody wants to have their land that's improved for like you know people can hike honored or do whatever they WANNA do. I don't think they should have to pay. Frankly anything for that. Because that's a problem there is that just means that somebody's GONNA sell it to somebody else and if you WANNA have a situation like the Nature Conservancy Right. The ducks unlimited. These organizations owned land and they're part of their whole stick is we don't have to pay property taxes on this because we're a not for profit. Well why should I as an individual be able to do that to like I'm just GonNa leave my land developed in those? Are My thoughts on that subject? Another questions like can you. Can you tax the air? Can you tax the ocean? I mean you know there's value like going out fishing or how about the the corridors which airliners fly if an airliner flies over my house right on my property tax should should yeah. There's a couple of questions I have about that. Government certainly taxes fishers and they certainly tax airlines so yeah but they tax them based on their property which they could claim that yours stops at a certain height above your house or wherever and a certain depth beneath it Some places you really have nothing below the ground you can put. You can put a foundation on it. You may be able to dig a basement but we've got the mineral rights. Yeah so what are the other sort of taxes your your thoughts on these as far as relative Yes I'd say income taxes probably the worst tax because it's a inefficient mess. I mean we've had my wife and I because we have our own business have had more than one hundred pages. My wife has spent more than forty hours a week in a month in a year. Excuse me forty hours in a year. That's a full week's worth work doing our income tax for one year. That's absolutely ridiculous and not even factoring week to week month to month accounting costs. Probably not I think it does I think she just all she puts receipts in an envelope and then did it all at once. Okay but yeah most right well. There are companies out there that have rooms full of people Buildings full of people accounting for stuff. So they can do their taxes so the government can get. It's money but that's a whole industry. Yeah it is. It's an environment. It's involuntary servitude and that's outlawed by the thirteenth amendment. And I think that income tax as it exists today in the United States is an important port to Yeah I totally agree. In addition you incentivize terrible. The more you work the more money you pay in most countries because they like progressive income taxes. Oh we're progressive right and also on this you success. Is that if you choose not to pay it? You just don't have to buy my business partner Ian One of the main host of the show. He hasn't paid income tax in years and the worst thing that happened to them was the. Irs cinema letter in Spanish trying to update their file on him. I mean just doesn't pay so some people choose not to pay and I mean every once in a while they grab a Wesley Snipes and shake him in front of you and say see. See what happens if you're black and you don't pay taxes like this guy in Lauren Hill. Do you know anything about Lauren. Hill as a young black man. I Never Wesley Snipes. That's as far as it goes. Got to listen anyway. Income tax is terrible. I think consumption tax are much better because it connects the activity right. That's where the government is in theory providing the legal services roads and everything else so the connect taxes with that makes sense where you could conceivably be earning income without using any roads. Any anything I mean for US Americans. We get Tok no matter where we live wouldn't even have to be in the country. We have never set foot in America. But if we're our parents who are Americans and we inherited the citizenship we owe taxes to the IRS but in the sales tax system. That's not possible right so I have a preference for sales toxin addition. I also think you can only spend so much money. Hopefully you're consumption below your income and thus there's a cap on on how much you can spend what about a VAT versus a sales tax. So sales tax happens at the in the United States. The sales tax happens at the end of the manufacturing process when all items for sale retail Situation and it is generally noted on the bill. So you by ninety nine cents a can of Coca Cola. Can you believe that I mean I remember buying cans of Coca Cola for twenty five cents a ninety nine cent Cana- Coca Cola and you pay a dollar nine or whatever for it be depending on what the level of taxation is there and you see the tax right at the register versus that which would say the price of this is presumably dollar nine minds you the fact that they can hide it means that they then go and check it out jack it up so you know you pay your dollar twenty for the can of coke and you never know how much of it was tax and so do that in Europe? Well here's another question about the tax debate that I always like people like Ron Paul mentioned it is. Maybe we shouldn't be spending this much money. Oh yes you know. Maybe we would need all these. Dang taxes if we didn't start wars that don't benefit us. Don't don't don't have programs to count like how many female chickens are in a whatever I mean. Th there's a whole bunch of crazy stuff. The government does that most of the debt. The United States had almost all the at the United States had up until the nineties. You could directly attributed to wars basically. It was where we're one more war too little going on in those other conflicts but then in the ninety s they started being some more things. And I'm going to presume it's Medicare which was never funded properly in the first place apple. Who are getting Medicare paid in Twenty five cents with started all the paying twenty five cents and receiving dollar and that's not a system that's going to work. What about interest paid to the Federal Reserve? Yeah well without debt you wouldn't have to Have those things. But it's certainly. That's getting tyler. I spoke to a woman who said that. She saw man being escorted through the mall by police. Could this be the shooter? According to the description he was a male age. Somewhere between twenty and sixty. He's either Caucasian or part Latino or something like that. He was wearing some kind of a jacket. I wrote somebody else here. But it got smudged however that information later turned out to be false. The shooter if there is one remains at large needless to say our thoughts are with the victims here today. Mariana Islands. Where America's Day begins live free here in the US Maryam Islands You can call in talk about whatever you WanNa talk about but there was actually a story that came out in the recent past here locally and the police are reporting. Crime has dropped Dave. Yeah and that's a good thing right. It's awesome yeah it's awesome. The crimes dropped. Why did they say it happened? Well so Fred Paul who scattered probably beyond next week show Hope he shared with me and a couple articles One was from Radio New Zealand and the other was from the seipat tribute where apparently the general rate of crime has dropped in the last five years like property. Crime Lake. Burglaries is down fifty eight percent and they all attribute it to cope community policing drink-driving programming driving. Yeah that's actually said that and and basically just Department public safety just being on the job in the last five years They forgot to mention that handguns were legalized and you were home. Defense and all that severe court case. Yeah in the same newspaper actually the same newspaper news agencies because for some reason I get the New Zealand thing you know. They all predicted that the gun. Pakalitha was going to happen. In crime would skyrocket and all that stuff so I just thought it was kind of interesting that the same people that were basically saying that I was an evil person for demanding that my rights be and other people's rights to self defense be recognized are the same people taking credit for what I would basically say. Is Your lawsuit that determine. Yeah but the deterrence of criminals. I mean it's I. I wonder if I wonder if they ever thought that the concept that maybe the risk of acute lead poisoning might have made some people decide that robbing houses is not a good idea. It's it is amazing because these people always the gun grabbers. You know the the hand wringers worry. Warts are always expecting crime to just skyrocket because of guns and the best I can tell and I've looked into this issue quite a bit. The relationship between gun ownership and crime isn't that there's just not that much I mean there's places with high gun ownership in high crime. There's places with low gun gun ownership and low crime and then there's high gun ownership in low crime. It's all a bunch of different things. So but they're obsessed with this and I think the reason they're obsessed with it is is because it's taught in schools it just keeps on getting handed down from those right. Those up high. Do not want you to have a gun right now. I'm not saying that you know like gun. Ownership alone is the deciding factor that made the crime. Go down. I mean I think there's there's some other issues I'll bet you. We legalized marijuana for example. And that's period which I think really helped some criminals can't get up off the couch now. Yeah well when they when they really went after marijuana these islands the DA came by with their helicopters back in the nineties and like repelled into people's yards and like cut down. Marijuana plants and overnight literally overnight crystal meth became an issue like this happens and bringing back to the corona virus. I wonder how the fat knol shipments are doing right now. Probably probably not much going on but but but yeah so there's a police station that will test it for you if you're art. Yeah Yeah Yeah but a bite but yeah so the so so there's a numerous factors I just don't think that the brilliant accurate of the police chief and out very serious and drink driving checkpoints really did the trick. I tend not to think so. There's a variety of factors. But one of them seems to be gun ownership and given a legal gun ownership and the media graphic area. It's difficult to know what illegal gun ownership does because it's illegal we don't know how much of goes on and this kind of things but legal gun owners concealed carry permit holders are the. Safest Group of people. We've been able to find besides those in a coma right. They just don't commit crimes. As a matter of fact there ten times SAFER THAN COPS. Cops are one hundred times safer to the community then the regular season two as you read certain statements right like from from people who are like. I guess of my persuasion. You know they'll say like the gun. Grabber types will go. Oh He's a terrible person because he wants to kill people because he's got a gun you know it's like No I have a gun so that's a burglar does break into my house. I can defend myself. Oh you just want to kill people in yet. The same kind of people like this person and Colorado who's in their legislature said that if she got corona virus she would go to Trump rally and stays on everybody. L. Basically says killer so yes he got these people who literally will advocate bioterrorism. But I'm bad because I want to defend my home right. I think that I think there are people who have guns. Who Want To? Who's waiting for that opportunity to shoot somebody who comes in their house personally if a burglar comes in my house. There's nothing for him to take. It's worth me killing him to my mind now however if he threatens my family in any way shape or form Oh yeah he's checking out came over and that's you know that's all to me. A gun is to protect life and protect. You know just sort of the body. Well I think sometimes like you know. There's AN ARGUMENT ABOUT CASTLE DOCTRINE. Like for example. If a guy's on your front porch in you know he he he looks at you fund. You could shoot them in some states whereas like I think the law here is like if there's a guy in your house. He's got your TV in his hand and he's like back is to he's walking out and you shoot them. That's first degree murder. I kind of tend to agree with that. Also put a hole in your TV. I well okay now depending on what caliber us. If you have hollow points I give a three eighty. Maybe not but a three fifty seven. Yeah I mean so I listed are important. I wouldn't shoot somebody over my TV But I I think that a person should be able to in that circumstance. That's up to the property owner to make that decision that the burglar has by initiating force in stealing versus proper that they have ceased to have decision in that particular in their life. They have given up that opportunity and that then becomes the property owners decision. I would not do it because. Tv's cheap these days and shoot him he's going to drop the TV the TV's broken at this point to me you're just looking for an opportunity to shoot somebody some people. I'm sure are like that but I think most most people even the psychotic types don't really feel like you know paying for a lawyer in going to court. I think I think some people they may be like. I can't wait till the Zombie. Apocalypse happens are the same people that will go. I can't wait to shoot somebody so I can pay for a lawyer and go on trial for my life and be financially ruined. There's been a few instances where people kill somebody in their house that those people are incarcerated. And it's always one of these marginal states and it's it's scary stuff. Well I think there's a I was reading about this the other day and they made a compelling argument that how do you prevent someone from murdering and saying it was defense? So have you have a strong castle doctrine state? It's pretty easy to say. Oh this person throwing me in my own home I in my house and say Hey Alex. Let's let's have a couple of drinks problems. I want to bury the hatchet in your skull. And and why don't you come over? We'll have a couple of drinks. You come in and shoot she repair you know I rifle whatever and then call the law and like I look. I got up from a NAP. A Clinton door. He was right there Bam Bam. Oh He's gone Look he's black. So yeah I mean I would think that at that point now in my case I shouldn't be using the first person because I am a convicted killer and it's going to be very bad news for me if I ended up with a dead. You were talking about During the break weird news story about a guy who owned the Darwin awards over Darwin awards are always my favorite? Yeah there there was every. It's I don't know if it's been legend but I remember reading the Darwin Awards and there was a guy Somewhere out west. Who Somehow got a hold of a rocket assess assisted takeoff back? And what is that? Okay Okay if you've ever gone to an air show and watch the Blue Angels. Yeah and they have the big C. One Thirty Hercules. And they do this really cool thing where they have rockets on the side of the big cargo plane and they go your own and like it gets like a couple thousand feet of altitude like really quick you know and then they cut off anyway. So it's basically a rocket engine okay and and this this this guy like said. I know what I'm GONNA do. I'm GonNa you know be daredevil. He gets he gets one of these like cargo plane rocket packs and he straps it on like the roof of his Chevy. No and and he finds like this long long stretch of Desert Road. And he he he gets in there and he's driving her gets in the second gear gets into third gear and then like ignites and apparently what they found afterwards his his teeth and finger bones like like impacted into the dashboard and it looked like an airplane crash apparently and they estimated that somewhere around three hundred seventy five miles an hour he must have lost consciousness. The house burned off the wheels. The rubber disintegrate and what happened was like apparently the road veered off to the right and like there was a mountain. You're like a hill and basically they. They saw where the streets are rubber. Where they they may not have voted for the person who's in charge of Mike. This story here is a blue state. Blue Spark secession movements nationwide and the gist of it is. It shows the the map from the latest election showing where the Democrats and Republicans live in. It's actually I mean there. Are these little archipelagos of islands filled with like a lot of liberal left leaning people who want open borders and gun control being surrounded by these big vast areas of you know what I called normal people and right so what you basically have is a situation where the The leftist Americans live along the West Coast and in the Northeast and New England. Yeah and then. You've got some other counties where people voted Democrat because it's basically University area probably know? It's usually Latinos. Right they tend. They used to be Republican voters at least in Texas and an Era Zona but that stopped with nine eleven more. I got a good friend and lives in Virginia Beach. And they he was saying that in his part of the state North Carolina's offering to take those counties and the other part of the state West. Virginia's talking about taking those counties a lot of people in Oregon one of Join Idaho and I've really been thinking for the longest time that you know. Maybe we just need to have a divorce. Mr America is like an old couple. That's been together way too long. The kids have gone to college and they just can't stand each other and probably the best they do before they kill each other is just get a divorce right and one has to wonder you know so you have a county that sitting right there on the border of North Carolina and Virginia. Why should they be able to vote two thirds of the people in the county? Say Yeah we'd like to go to North Carolina. And why shouldn't they be able to just change the map that way? Well why does it better? Because it's not like it's GonNa change the demographics of the House that much. I mean or the Senate. What's the big deal here? The Senate still have fifty states I mean I get why they don't WanNa have if we're gonNA bring a state you have to bring in a bread blue one at the same time more or less because of the politics of bringing in new status but then taxes also come into this because if you're living in Fresno you're paying for the people in San Francisco the taxes and your and your values are completely different. But there's actually a second not. Everybody knows that there's a bird in Florida. That goes bob white noise about it yet so awesome and he got elected. Sheriff Ida voted for his dog to a lot of campaigning. Running around going. I've sold So there's that Sheriff Darren wake in Albuquerque unbelievably unbelievably. There's also oh by the way sheriff during wait in Albuquerque is from suffering New York which is about half aptly named anyway Another carpet bagger. But there's a daring wait in Missouri. Too I just see but This this Darren White in Albuquerque. Since he won't talk to me on his radio program I talk about him on your radio program. There's a couple of Controversies he had His wife had crashed her car. A few years. Back and She was dealing with You Know Magin if you crash your car and the ambulance shows up and there's a copper to there and they're probably wondering what what caused you crash your car are you are you? Are you under the influence of anything? Mrs Sheriff Darren White of Albuquerque New Mexico and so they were beginning that process and then then applies a An official city vehicle with it's lights going Upon the scene barges in amongst the other cops I mean and that's another thing if you and I Tried to enter into the investigation that was going on and some other police officers where a woman had crashed her car. What do you think might happen to us? Yeah you're going to be summarily expelled from that group right. That didn't happen to sheriff during white when he was The coming upon. Here's his wife's accident here And and so Sheriff White Dealt with the officials at hand and the wife was Not Tested for anything on the on the scene She wasn't incapacitated from the crash She had just crashed her car. She wasn't injured so she couldn't be subjected to testing but sheriff during White Excused her took her away from the scene of the accident Within you know like basically immediately within a half hour of of accident he has taken away. Yeah Yeah even though there was there were professionals on the scene during shift during White's not a medical professional and there happened to be an ambulance crew there with several medical professionals and and that's what they were claiming it happened was it was a medical event so instead of being transported in the ambulance to the hospital The Sheriff Darren White said all. We don't need your professional your medical professionals in your ambulance Even though that's the job you're here to do you're trained to do it better than I am. I'll just take my own wife to the hospital. And so he took took his wife to the hospital and I believe Didn't go to the emergency room. I think they win. Were seen by private physician and then later supplied documentation from what I deduced to be some various reading of done to be a private doctor saying that. No Sheriff Mrs Sheriff Darren White of Albuquerque. New Mexico was not under the influence of anything. We did our private testing and such. We didn't really need your government testing In this car crash We did our private testing and here are the results and she was not under the influence of anything. It's it's hard to trust that particular test when she special treatment. Why would you not trust that mark? I don't know but I certainly don't do you. Oh okay go anywhere and Another thing that Sheriff right there. There was as a lawyer Turned up in Albuquerque. Awhile back Mary on H. A. N. She had Apparently either committed suicide or accidentally killed herself. She was found sitting in her parked car inside of her garage. With the motor running You know and and just so happened to be that her the way she made. Her living was suing. Albuquerque Police Department and other law enforcement in Albuquerque market. That's all she made her living then. She mysterious I mean she. I guess she just decided she didn't WanNa live anymore. I don't know what she was in her mid to the late fifty s or whatever and successfully suing the cops all the time and then she just decided to kill herself or or Maybe she went out in the garage and had a glass of wine and decided to listen to the tunes on radio and started up. Started up the car to keep the tuning in it. Yeah yeah so I think it's You know well David's watchdog for this kind of stuff and he He comes up with some really great stories. I want you to get a chance to David here to finish your or at least get the gist of the story. As far as the get up on that might place. Well this is. This is something that I've been following for some years now and The article starts out. It's going to read. The first paragraph is every four years. America doesn't just elect a new president. They get reminded about how America's politically divided. We are all familiar with those maps of the United States divided by county with large swath of red counties peppered with smaller specs of blue counties. Those blue counties tend to turn I tend to be urban with higher concentrations of populations even deep blue states have large land areas with mostly conservative voters in them often. Their interests are completely ignored. I'm looking at a map here of Of the United States. And you know if you look at the red versus blue areas and there's some pink and some light blow but if you look at sort of just cut it red versus blue. The country is mostly read but those red areas are mostly cows. Well actually it's like fifty percent of the population lives in the red areas and the other fifty percent lives in the blue areas. What I think is kind of interesting is where the guns. Hey the red guys got the guns an grow the food and it's kind of like we were talking about taxation and fairness will like for example. If I'm if I'm a rancher in Bakersfield California and I I'm not really in on the agenda is that the people in Los Angeles are into but I'm still paying taxes to to push like you know things like drag Queen Story Hour at the Public Library and and and you know it's just kind of kind of funny that you're seeing a lot of people being left behind when it comes to like people talk about this whole oh electoral college. It's not fair because it screws people out of the out of the out of the popular vote but you know part of the reason why our Constitution was written. That way is because they took an idea from the Indians which the the tyranny of the fifty one percent. It's a real thing we can't have that indeed and I think the best solution for it. It's something we've talked about. Here is basically counties. Should be able to move from state to state And that would solve a lot of the problems I mean. I'd like it if the counties were right on the border but I mean look at Michigan. It's two separate areas as a matter of fact that goes on in the Delmarva penance Virginia you will understand the true intent of the founding fathers when they wrote the constitution. The fundamentals of the city of Venice were eaten away so by the Nineteen Seventies. Venice was sinking. Because of all of this rot coming up. We examined by Venice recently. Had its worst flooding and fifty years and how it's resident suffered through it and the Sirocco wins and the brain and the full moon everything combined perfectly to allow the one we go of pressure. We'll also hear what it's like to hike the length of the infamous Kakuta trail across Papua New Guinea. It was the site of fierce battles during the second world. War The jungle at times oppressive. And all you can see is thirty-seven shades of green and hear how to celebrate carnival like they do in best country many people they go into seek. But you have to leave it. Let's see the world together in the hour ahead. It's travel with Rick Steves. Exceptionally high tides in the Venice Lagoon caused near record flooding in November of Two Thousand Nineteen. And just a bit. We'll check in with Italy cultural expert Fred Plotkin and with a resident who had to clean up after the Aqua Alta flooded. The ground floor of her home. They'll share some interesting perspectives with us on. Why the high waters in Venice are getting more and more serious and travel writer recanting and tells us about one of the toughest hikes up his life when he crossed the historic cocoon trail Papua New Guinea. Let's start with the Mardi Gras and Carnival celebrations going on in Basque country. The costumes and street parties vary from town to town. It's one of the oldest cultures in Europe. The Basques include some interesting public festivities in the days leading up to the fasting period of lamp. Traditions sometimes go back further than anyone can remember for a peek at how they do carnival Basque country. We're joined by Claire No yet. She's from aspirin in the French Basque country and a Gustin Theresa lives in San Sebastian on the Spanish side of the border. Welcome Claire and Agustin. Thank you very much so first of all. You're both from best country. Claire who are the Basques just very briefly and the basket is one of the oldest civilization in Europe and we are divided on those two parts. No-one in friends in another Barton Spain in August in the language of Basque people. Yes we speak a bus language which we call US skater. Who Scatter yes. I WanNA talk about carnival. Carnival basically is the blowout before lint. That leads up to Holy Week and Easter. It goes way back to even pre Christian Times on trying to get through the winter and there's hope for resurrection for new crops in the fields for the end of the hunger time and then darkest depths of winter. I think the meat was going to go bad. And they had to eat it. All or something or carnival. Carney is the word meat. And that led up to forty days of Denial lent and Easter. So we know Mardi Gras in New Orleans. That's basically fat Tuesday in French. And IT'S CARNIVAL TIME RIGHT. Tell me about carnival. 'cause I it's a big deal in Basque country Augustine what is Carnival in your perspective as a person. In Basque country we have two ways of celebrating carnival the More more than Christian celebrations are more popular on the Spanish side on the more traditional Pagan celebrations that you can find on the in the past country of French. The difference is the recent history. I mean these pagan celebrations were banned by the dictator Franco for thirty five years He bundy use of the language and all kind of celebrations related to pants or minis and this was previously lost in that time. So let me get this straight. You've got Basque culture. Which is a lot of ways? The same in France and in Spain but carnival is a mix of Christian and pagan traditions. And when you see these crazy creatures jumping up and down in Europe in many cultures it's pre Christian and it's a way to integrate the the indigenous religion in ancient times with the Christian. The new religion and Franco was allied very carefully with the Catholic Church in Spain. He didn't want any pagan influence in the Spanish Basque country so he said this is a Christian festival none of that Pagan stuff but in France they were more free to have let loose with the pagan craziness. Correct correct franken himself. The highest representation of the Catholic Church and turn the country into a religious state Now clear I would imagine in France. Then you have some pretty wild costumes when people dress up during carnival especially where the Pagans go crazy in the French side of the border. What is the carnival? Can you just were radio but paint a picture for US? Is it look like for me? It's colorful with many natural things so we will have flowers leaves and we will have Ribbons we will have a chilling chuck which is a small bells everywhere. So you have to hear the carnival and you have to say it eats an explosion. Okay of joy. It's just a moment where you go out from the last year and everything that went wrong and you wish something really good for the next one so you just have to explore yourself and just let me go go out with your animal part of you let your animal free inside and we all have this side in so we have just. This is the perfect moment just to and then you start again so you dress up. There's music there's staying up all night. What is going on in different places? You've got different carnivals into French. Part of the Basque country got three provinces for example Nepali. Which is really famous. You've got cash Caltech so those people that are going from house to house every weekend before carnival low even after they go to each house. They get to know the neighborhood so it's also kind of ritual and they'll go to every house they sing. They play music they dance. They sure several cups of wine. And then it's a big party the I'll be tired but it's really nice. This is so interesting because I've been going to Basque country for a long time and I have to be honest. I feel there's more character and enthusiasm in Spain because French banks server French to me they're more controlled by Peres. But here on Carnival. Hewlett that ask animal that Augustine when you hear clear talking about that from the Spanish Basque side on carnival. Do you relate to have an animal? You're GonNa let loose all. Fortunately now we have a just a couple of little towns in the north of Navarra. We are having the celebration in which These men are carrying big bells that are bouncing and making big noise. Big like a cow bells. Yes cultures a lot of this You know animal caretaking in the mountain is the purpose of it is to wake the nature awake. The youth springtimes communists very much related to the end of winter welcoming the new year and also awaken in the nature speakers coming in the blossom. So he's very much related to that. So that's something you can see in two different towns in the north of Pamplona Navarre and also a couple of towns in the area outside San Sebastian. When I think of eastern Spain anyways I think of processions solemn processions like in savvy and so on someone Santa Holy Week Carnival feels a little more distant apart. It is ended in. Holy Week is more sacred. Yes especially in the spiny side you're gonNA see. Is the parade liking the town of Tolosa than most popular one? People go from all areas to go and see. These parades our guest from Basque country are August Teresa from San Sebastian Spain and Claire. Loya from Hesperian a little town outside zone in the southwest corner of France. They're sharing. What makes the days leading up to Ash? Wednesday special and best country and what their traditions include on both sides of the border. So clear I got this image of being in the middle of all this festivity and chaos and music and happy people helped me just better understand it. First of all people are dressed up like animals. What kind of animals would they be? So the main animal a bear okay. So the bear is opening the spring so the bear will be around. He will care the children and then you've got many people with long hats horns flowers mirrors and ribbons everywhere to mirrors on their head yet and ahead in the hot long hats yellowing. Even these these. What color pointed head with many flowers? Okay you need to represent nature. And then they hire a Cornucopia of life. That's right okay. And we have also a skirt with them. A- sheep wool horns and then also a natural shoes at whatever you find in nature you do it like trees or whatever you find. These are two little ferry Elvis and so on coming out of the woods and stirring up all the energy of people. What about the music? What kind of music? We've got a lot of music really PECI and a lot of songs linked to Legendary people are the witches. Or whatever would this be kind of just noisy ringing bells hitting drums or is it actually melodic? We've got to we've got the drums and the bells just to make a lot of noise to wake up everybody and then we've got our son. We sing in the country so we have a songs with all the people getting together. It must be a time when the community feels like. It's one big family and that's part of the beauty. It's part of ritual to be together and have fun. This is travel with Rick Steves. We're talking about carnival in French. Basque country and Spanish Basque country are guides are clear league and a Gustin. Sarasota sounds like a fun time to come to Basque country. What should I know about tourism about travel clarify? I'm coming to best country on the French side. Where will I go is there? There's a different Energy in small towns in the big cities I love some lose and I just stay there and have a good time. Or what do you recommend subhuman carnival time? I will reconsider on the loose just in front of the bay. You've got siebu. And they have the shocking gala. Which is the witch night and you see those people with the bells and it's really a popular thing. I will go to do. So which night is the witch night the Friday night the Friday night? Okay and Augustine if you're coming to best country in Spain how would you best enjoy during I would suggest to stay in Big CD and then move for today. Or maybe thi this to these ton of Tolosa Tolosa Tolosa L. O. S. A. Tolosa to loosen front obvious. Punish TO LOSE WOULD BE TO LHASA. And actually we call carnival in or they're static mysteriously Tuesday. Yes there's celebrations related. Tuesday Mardi Gras just Tuesday fat or skinny we. We have fought Thursday thin Friday. But you're GONNA have a great time on that weekend and just to cap this beautiful discussion. I'd love both of you to share with me. Your favorite sort of childhood memory of carnival in your corner of Basque country. Clear if you think back. Just what's one memory that you just go? Wow that was a crazy. Time TO WEAN DEMIDOV CARNIVAL. Because for me. Many people they go in to see Carnival. But you have to leave it so you are in the middle. You'll be lost to get lost and to see how those people looking with colors and animals and to be with them and to just disturbing you food and like and you mean in the middle of it literally like there's crazy decorated people around you and figuratively where you're letting yourself free to be overcome by. Yes so it's the end. Then you found again your parents. They're like oh it was great. Took Nice Augustine. What's your as Being born and raised in a city like San Sebastian and having a carnival celebrations as. You'll find anywhere else. Go into small towns in the Basque country France. That was an experience. Seeing all these people were stop in the traditional outfits an also representing these wild animals. That was something when I was a child to see these people carrying the cowbells and making that huge noise. When you're a kid that's kind of a frightening and that is still even today. We can experience that. You're going to go to send Sebastian if you happen to be there during carnival you can head on up to two. Lhasa on the Spanish side but if it happens that you were there before that their celebrations are starting to meet late. January fill the week of carnival in the Basque Country of France. So you just need to go and check. Oh to France for the party every weekend the GonNa have these celebrations that Chris. Plante a very good lesson. Agustin Theresa Clare Log. Thank you very much and happy carnival. Thank you very much animal out. Eight seven seven three seven four to five. That's her phone number radio. At Rick Steves DOT COM is the email address will head to the other side of the World Papa New Guinea and a little bit. But next let's look at why the flooding episodes are getting more frequent and more serious in. Venice. It's travel with Rick. Steves alter the high tides Venice soaked. The city in November two thousand nineteen was the deepest flooding in fifty years. The author of Italy for the gourmet traveller has examined these issues that venison space for years. That's Fred Plotkin and Stacey Caponi is resident of Venice. She's an artist and she was there and her home was flooded and she was living the experience and she joins us also as we learn more about the challenge events. The high water the alcohol. Fred thanks for being here and Stacey thanks for being here also thank you. Thanks for having me no Fred. You wrote your thesis at the University was on the what was called the death. Venice tell us why we have the Aqua Alta and what's the back story of this flooding Venice? Well historically there were always tides full moon and so on and the city throughout its history had periodic flooding. But nothing like what we've seen in recent times. The problem really became aggravated the way. So many things did with the rise of fascism in the nineteen twenties with Cellini. Decided that he would widen the three natural inlets of the lagoon understand that the lagoon separates Venice in the north from the Adriatic Sea in the south. The three inlets recalled Lido Mullah Moco and killed Joh- and by widening them. It allowed more water to come into the lagoon. More salt water. He did that because he put stupidly oil refineries in the mainland town of Marghera. So the oil tankers would go out of the lagoon into the Adriatic. And ever since we've had this problem and to that that the pollution that was result of the oil refineries plus agricultural run off meant that the foundations the fundamentals of the city of Venice. Were eaten away. So by the Nineteen Seventies. Venice was sinking. Because of all of this rot. Long Story Short. The city was actually supported and made strong great sinks ever so slightly. Now we have a new problem. Climate change has led to melting to hire waters bigger storms so that most of the recent disastrous floods in Venice have been in the first decade in the Second Decade of the twenty first century including three horrible days in November. Two Thousand Nineteen. Well the high water really is a It's a perfect storm of of different variables. You've got a wind. You've got a high tide with full moon you've got changes caused by the development of the region and we've got Venezia's inability to to do anything about it. It's it's sort of helpless situation. Isn't it Stacey? No I was just going to say your description is a perfect storm. What we had this last November two thousand and nineteen and it was more like seven days of the waters because with the four tied that you have in and out you know every so many hours places like my home were filling up with water. You have to wait for the tide to recede before you can open your water door to allow it to escape which just comes back in when people go traipsing by your house or pumps go on. But the borough wins and the shock wins and the rain and the full moon everything combined perfectly to allow this one week of pressure. It's part of daily life to live with the title situation in a place like this. We're used to but not to have it remain so long. Describe what it's like Stacey because as a tourist I've been there in you know it's kind of we take photographs of it and they've got the elevated walkways and some people pulling their hip boots and it's it's something to it's kind of exciting but you're living there and you've got the reality of of mold and bacteria in humidity problems with your electricity. What's it like to live in Venice after a big flood? I think that I mean obviously I'm not the nation as we all know. I've adopted the city as as my home. I've chosen to live in this beautiful delicate place that to me Holds so much magic to the high waters are part of my conscious. Decisions live here. I don't WanNa complain about them too. Because it's a part of the choice that has been made and the Venetians have that same sort of confident energy. You're just used to cleaning up after the high waters living here. The thing that was most frustrating was to be watching the news and see all the nations politicians and their posse having a fashion show in San Marco with their hip waders. On as opposed to you know sending out more crews to help local people and business owners clean up the mess so that was actually a case where you've got your city leaders in your politicians sort of just frolicking in the spectacle of the flood while residents. I mean there's what's just sixty thousand people still living in Venice. You guys are wondering. How are we going to deal with this? Stacey you mentioned a how maddening it is that tourists. Just wander into your house and take photos of while you're dealing with this real serious problem. That definitely makes me lose my patients. So when you're mucking out the water that's you know come up to the third step of your entrance and you know part of my art studio's downstairs so it's just frustrating. Not Anything on the floor but with being almost at the two meter market definitely came in to damage. My biggest problem is the the. Drywall gotTA have down there. That all has to be taken out and the electricity doesn't work anymore so while you're busy mucking out on day four and somebody just sort of comes in right behind you at your open door and taking food graph of your home. That's just shocking. This is travel with Rick. Steves talking with Stacy Caponi. Who's an artist in Venice? Living through the floods. And we're talking with Fred Popkin. Who's a scholar and a lover of all things Italian and he's written a book called Italy for the Gourmet traveller and Fred. I know when you were a student that was your theme was studying the the whole phenomenon of the fled when we think of the flood and we were talking about this perfect storm of things that contribute to this problem. You've got this issue of cruise ships dredging bigger canals. You've got the causeway that was built in in the middle of the eighteen hundreds that stop the circulation. I know when they made the 'cause we have to Moan Machel in France that caused things to silt up and they took the causeway away. So there'd be a better flow. What are some of these factors and then. What is the hope of the Moses Project? That's been so much promise and so much investment but so much corruption so much disappointment all kinds of issues here and I can put them concisely. The Austrians Occupied Venice for much of the nineteenth century. They built the railway bridge in eighteen. Forty six connected the mainland. The Intra story called the Old City of Venice. That for many people was the beginning of the end. They destroyed a neighborhood to build the Santa Lucia train station and ineffective made Venice dependent on the mainland. Also that breached did stop the waters in certain ways and it is a source of real resentment. Verity riddle whole opera about it. Attila about Attila. The Hun the Austrians Being Attila coming in sacking Venice and the Venetian Roman general. Says of right to Lavar so rescue Italian? May you can have the universe. Let Italy be mine. So that was the beginning and then with Cellini adding all of the industry and widening the three inlets then pollution after World War Two with industrial buildup then corruption in Italian business and government November fourth nineteen sixty six was the highest flood in the history recorded history of Venice. It was seventy six inches to give you context November Twelfth Two Thousand Nineteen seventy four inches in other words the second highest recorded history and there were two more in the days that followed this is high above the regular Seila. Yes yes so to tell you about the mosaic in Italian Mo. Ac- means Moses. We think of Moses Holding back the sea but it stands for modal low. Mo Spedding in tally the S. electromechanical. In other words these mechanical gate sitters supposed to open and shut that were to be installed in the Lido. Mela Molko and killed Jay inlets. They did not start on that until two thousand than three and they are almost done but they're not really working there was I can't go into all the government corruption and so on and payments and bribes but the problem is basically that for fifteen years now. This flooding has continued. The salt pollution has continued. It's not the venison sinking so much. It's that the waters are rising Have cruise ships come in displacing when you have a six thousand passenger ship? It seems it's actually three thousand just placing huge amounts of water onto the Piazza San Marco. Just by ship. It has nothing to do with the high tides. Then what you're doing is allowing van is to be destroyed. That's why people are angry but the commercial interests want what's called the more. The Fujian other words eaten run tourism of people who land at the ship terminal. Do a little shopping leave money and then leave Venice. So that affects hotelkeepers. It's in the long term terrible for the economy of Venice and a few people were making a lot of money in the short term. But they're destroying the city. What is the feeling among the nation's Stacey about trying to get money in certain areas like cruise ships and so on is really threatening the very existence of life for people? Who Live there. Well I mean I guess I can only speak for the people that I I know right so I tend to know the people who are anti cruise ships. Not An anti. I don't think you should travel by cruise ship person. In general I just think that the laws affecting the ship industry around the world needs to be looked at for. It's not just Venice. That is suffering under the stress of this type of tourism as we all know the Venetians in general are rather divided. It depends on where their family's income comes from. Venice gets the extreme case. People just stampede in. They don't eat in a for dinner. They don't sleep in a hotel. They just stampede in congest everything you eat some fast food take some photographs and then go back to their shit so I can see some people thinking. This is not my idea of a nice part of our industry. We're looking beneath the surface of Venice to examine why the city is flooding more often end with greater impact. We're joined by ITALOPHILE. Fred Plotkin. He writes the regional food guide deadly for the gourmet traveller and a book called opera. One and Stacey Kabbani is a painter photographer and tour guide. Who had to rescue her art from the floodwaters seeping into her Venice Studio. She posted samples of her work at Stacey. Gibbons DOT COM. Anna's listening in from Rochester New York and she joins us on the phone at eight seven seven three three three Rick Anna. What are your thoughts about Venice? Yeah so I'm curious what you know. I can do to be a more responsible. Tourists never been to Italy very looking forward to going for a long-awaited honeymoon with my husband and We want to visit Venice. But we we're not sure how we can do this responsibly. and still enjoy everything the city has to offer. This is such a timely question and It's an interesting issue for several cities. And you're better over touristed in Venice along with Amsterdam and Barcelona in a couple of others are getting to the point. Where you wondered is a tourist. Even welcome of course good tours miss. Welcome but there's there's tourism that just takes doesn't give Fred. What's your thoughts on how somebody can visit? Venice in a way. That's positive on the first thing is to stay away from the Piazza San Marco in the most touristed areas. Stay in a low condo which is in in in one of the outlying areas there. It's called assist Yeti. There are six districts in the Old City of Venice. Staying in Castillo. Staying kind of Joe. Stay IN ONES. That are less frequented by tourists. Try to find a neighborhood where you develop your local Bar. You form a community for a few days frequent local. Venetian food places. Don't go wear I you see. All the crowds of people lining up for Pizza Pizza's not Venetian go to museums. That are less well known. In addition to the academia but above all for me Venezia's among its many virtues is acoustically. It's like nothing else in the world and if you walk down certain alleyways and you hear people doing their dishes or they're on the phone you suddenly realize that you are away from your world of vehicular traffic of all kinds of noise that really cluttered our minds and makes it hard to think in. Venice you reflect not just on the water not just in the sky but you hear things you don't hear Ellsworth who bring linger your eyes to Venice but your ears and wander without direction without a plan and you'll have the best discoveries of all. That's a beautiful answer Fred and I know that we've talked before and and you are considered a pleasure activist and that's a very scrub. The pleasure is to appreciate the acoustics. Stacey what are your thoughts on? How a tourist? I Love Fred suggestion and Ricky and I've talked about this before it comes to venison get lost right but I encourage you to stay definitely in a hotel in the city. Run by family. Wouldn't that be nice? Please avoid illegal AIRBNB. That's a topic for another day. Please eat at local restaurants. Please don't day trip and come in from the mainland. Please take a glimpse into ride and do exactly like Fred has suggested be quiet. You're going to listen to the water. Be in the place. Forget your selfie stick. Try To make those memories your photographs of your mind because this place needs to be felt Not just seen quickly so if you can stay for a week then you can do exactly what Freddie suggested and find yourself the local cafe to have your coffee and and meet the local people and learn a little Venetian dialect. While you're at it. Amick one more suggestion. Yeah please make Venice your first stop fly there. There's the airport there go into the city by a ferry and it will arise your vision and so on this way your first impact with Italy will be Venice. Then you can leave by the railway station and go to the mainland But it's the best first place to have contact with everything. Italian as Fred said is a beautiful way to be introduced to one of the most magnificent cities anywhere in your travels. Thanks for your call Anna. Thank you very much. This is travel. With Rick Steves. We're talking with Fred Plotkin. He's the author of Italy for the Gourmet traveller and Stacey Kabbani who's Local tour guide. Who's new American who's decided to embrace venison actually become a local stacey if you had visited Venice What's how do you appreciate the wonder and the magic of of the Serenissima than the Serene City? Well unlike you rick I like it. Early in the morning for sure The peacefulness and it's when all the local people are out. Kids are going to school. People are going to work. I mean I can get up at five thirty in the morning and opened my studio window and start to see people going into work and I think that's an interesting thing to enjoy but when people come to visit I encourage everyone to get lost to not hold onto their map to know this before they walk out the door. Have some kind of general plan. Okay today I'm headed towards The academia like Fred had suggested and as I get there I will pass through other neighborhoods. What will I be looking for? Maybe an umbrella the habit of the local gentlemen to have the Geo alone every day to go have a glass of wine in the shade of the Bell. Tower leaked out into the other sist yet. And it's still a habit of the local people and I enjoy taking foreign visitors to participate in the day long. Bre meet a few local characters. You know I'm so thankful that the traditions Venice survive and then that somebody like you. Stacey who can appreciate Venice can actually move in and embrace those traditions as a local mess. You've become over twenty years. He Fred Plotkin and Stacey. Thank you so much for joining us for this discussion about Venice and in high water thank you. We include links to our guests with this week. Show at Rick Steves Dot com slash radio and you can always reach us by email are addresses radio at Rick. Steves DOT com the sound? She here on. The trail presented him with more than the physical challenges of wild terrain and weather extremes. It introduced him to the modern realities of tribal world. That's order them. Civilization Recant Hinson. Welcome to travel with Rick. Steves thank you. It's very nice to be here so Papua New Guinea. It's just sort of fable is one of the last wild places on earth before we get into the experience you had rick. What's unique about Papa? Guinea it's part of a large island. New Guinea second largest island in world after Greenland and people are fascinated by the name. Often people think Papua New Guinea is the entire island in fact it is the eastern half. The western half is part of Indonesia. It's always amazing when you think of the complexity of things down there in the thought that Indonesia is archipelago violence as big as the continental United States. We yeah the same with many people and Fascinating and that that one giant island would be split when we think of Papua New Guinea. It's almost for archaeologists like a treasure chest to studies tribal societies and this sort of thing well and it was fifty thousand years ago when the first people were arriving there about the same time as early settlement within Australia they arrived in eight dated pockets somewhere. Inland Valley and next to them was another valley of people that they never saw. They didn't have a need for trade and they weren't going to war so they didn't want that didn't share languages. They would be more diverse per square mile because of the rugged terrain than somebody who lives in Nebraska. Where there's really no mountains separating people absolutely or even in the Canadian rockies or the the the Swiss Alps anywhere else these pockets in Papua New Guinea were isolated and had no motivation to become not isolated. They connected with each other. Yeah and there was no need for one nation until okay. Colonies were established. Then people had all the angst around that and there began to be mobility. So Rick. What made you want to go to this? Remote Corner Quite happenstance My wife was an airport management with the cans airport and Australia and we moved into a new place. Neighbors came over the night were on and his name is Glen. His friends called monkeys thorough. Part of my book walking with Golden Palm Guinea and monk said to me late at night. I'm going to do the KAKUTA. Do you want to come? And I said absolutely the might have been a little bit of liquid courage and then he smiled and I said just one thing. What's the `Cocopa and he said to me? Play into the look of naive T on my face. He said it's a walk across the country. And I said what country and he said Papa New Guinea and that began at the challenge was on. We shook hands. And and you're you're Canadian. I'm Canadian and he was an OSCE. He's an ozzy through. And this is one thing we do have to remember for me as an American Pop Warner. Guinea just seems like literally the opposite end of civilization but for the Australians. It's kind of like going to the Yucatan for an American or something. It is but there's not a comfort with too much travel there right now described the trail. This you must have learned about the trail You hate it. What what is it? How long has it just physically? What what is the trail? It is grueling. It's about sixty miles long here up up down down up and down up and down up and down. It is continuous. There are lots of false summits where you think. Well there's the village it can't be very far away and then you spend the next two hours going up and down these. I'm at the top. Oh no there's another top higher up so it is at times real creator of Angst for a hiker. It is utterly demanding. They ask you to show medical coverage that will get you helicopter out of their through insurance. If there's anything that happens one recent year four people died on the trump to them in the same week all heart-related so is it. An organized hike is kind of like a guided tour or is just. It's every person for themselves. You have to go with an organized group you do. You are not allowed to go there on your own because many of the lands are tribal the villages where they let you stay. Do expect some form of compensation. Sometimes they're assisting you they may even help food but you have to be prepared. You also need to have the safety of group so you don't just go on your own. I was there twenty years ago with my church making a video about work that churches are doing in places like Papua New Guinea and I was really impressed with how important the big man is in each village. You have to meet with the big man and you have to recognize. He's the big man. And if you're on your own you would know who these people are necessarily. Did you encounter that the leader we would encounter someone who come to us? Upon arrival and our guides usually we had two guides they usually would be the ones that would joust if there was any. So you're lucky to have your guides with you absolutely mandatory and my view is I mean conceivably conceivably you could that this is a hindrance for our freedom but I would imagine doing this particular hike. You're glad you had given the complexities of tribal issues. And so you're probably lucky to have local fixers. You are right and then the other thing about that is that sometimes you arrive and you think well we could make camp here and somebody says no you. Can't you have to move on? We'll you're moving on. It's getting dark. You WanNa find a new place so you need to be aligned with the locals. Recanting telling us about his grueling trek across the dakotas trail in Papua New Guinea right now on travel with Rick Steves. He writes about his adventure. And what it showed him in his book. Walking with ghosts in Papua New Guinea repulsive writes about his trek up Mount Arafat in full moon over Noah's Ark about his exploits on the back roads of the desert southwest in route. Sixty six still kicks and about. His African travels in a book called to Timbuktu for a haircut. His website is Rick Antonsson Dot Com. The only souvenir brought back from Papua New Guinea was three spears and I brought him from this crazy guy and he didn't speak much English but he pointed to each Bernie said fish chicken human. Well and it's a land that still has the legacy of cannibalism headhunting. That very much comes to the surface. One of the challenges for me. Writing Walking with ghosts was not sensationalized that but to acknowledge it and how important it was to them as a a tradition and as a practice in something that had lots of honor and integrity around it honor and integrity around the head. Hunting was very much a ritual that wasn't just about capturing an enemy it was about taking the soul of the enemy that the whole cannibalism was absorbing the good parts of the enemy. This is a way of triumphing away of growing. This is a way of self enhancement. It's a way of being able to boast to your family or others within your village or competitive villages to be able to have a skull or or the members but part of it was the head hunting the trophy as it were also the cannibalism. The actually consumption of it was to give your body and your spirit of additional strengths that you wouldn't have if you hadn't done that but they brought me from the grocery stores years we carried with is actually a lot of freeze dried food. Just because of the way we had porter's which is something else that you need to arrange but I wanna see something else about the villages that I think you would have encountered and that's very much the amazing singing voices of the children I was so impressed and we had this on several occasions but pounds are a wonderful people. But the children's say under the age of twelve over fifteen when they sing and they did often in a village to entertain us or inform us they have some of the most remarkable young voices in the world and in particular when they sing the national anthem. Which isn't an anthem. You here on sports parties but it is a remarkable song. One of the most beautiful so to celebrate Tori National Hymns. Oh Yeah I remember that. Now that you mentioned that is just there is A sort of a Janis. It was just really light and fun. I like that word John John Genus. Exactly what it was and something related to that. I learned which give me a a real respect for hell important. It is to go to these places in the Papa New Guinea and language least was there was no word for orphan because there would never be a child abandoned. The community always took care of the children. I did not know of that concept. But the closeness of the community. It's like everywhere else in the world. We all kind of want the same things. I'll never forget rick. Standing in a village talking with some of the parents and a kid ran by and they could look at the footprint of that the barefoot footprint in the sand and know what child that was remarkable and that was a good example to me. Of how tight did they knew every child's footprint in that beautiful village where they had no word for orphan? This is travel with Rick. Steves were talking with Rick and Rick's telling us about one of the most arduous journey of his life. I can along the trail in Papua New Guinea. His book is called walking with ghosts in Papua New Guinea. You call this the most grueling adventure sixty miles you know. That's that's a long hike but It's certainly not one of the longer hikes around but in the dense jungle. Was that temperatures crazy. Were you afraid about your health. Were their animal's swinging from trees. What was it? That made a grueling. Well first of all you maybe advance at about a mile an hour. So if you're out for six or seven hiking hours in a day you haven't really made much progress on a sixty mile track size. You're going to be making the commitment of being seven to ten days on the journey. That's if the weather is good the jungle at times as oppressive and all you can see is thirty. Seven shades of green and the fascinating. If you stop and listen you can hear all sorts of noises at are observing you and you don't know whether they're predators are birds but the sounds are fantastic particularly at night when it's as black as black can be your sleep when you wake up and you think. What are those noises? How Vulnerable Am I? And you're happy to be surrounded by some mates. You're probably fully aware that you are such a rookie when it comes to jungle life skills. Isn't that true and these other guys? That's just I'm thirsty. I'm GONNA climb this tree for coconut. And they make the other thing. Was that the power lines were to a person or porters helpers anyone with the cooking they were absolutely wonderful as hosts and in effect saying this is my country. I will share with you. Whatever you would like to see or learn about it. They would talk. They would tell stories and we could hear their music late at night or first thing in the morning before we were even. Oh Yeah. That's great so something I should say about. The Kakoty trail is that its prominence has come because during the second world. War was the site of fierce fighting between the Australians and the Japanese and it was a different time than the world. We live in today. Societies are different today than they were then but for six months this was and the terms of general macarthur the worst fighting conditions anywhere in world. War Two coincident with this were the Americans at Guadalcanal. So that's the timing in nineteen forty two and we had pretty good weather on the CODA but in nineteen forty two. This September was the wettest September. On record I talked with other trekkers. Who have been on there before like our guides and they were there when it was rainy. And you would take ten or twelve days to do what we did in five or six right. Just because you're you're yeah. You wrote quite movingly about the Australian military campaigns and how heartbreaking they must have been. I will tell you twice on the trip. I cried when we were in a little bit of a memorial stopped to talk about Butcher Hill or or Brigade Hill or other places where the battles had been fierce for both sides but to think of the young lives that were were lost in all of the brutality or I woke up one night and it was foggy the the rain and come in and it was dead quiet. It must have been two three in the morning and I was had this fear of what it would have been like to be thinking that somebody was maybe twelve feet away and wanted to take your life so emotionally. It was draining. I would say that most places around the world if you go to an old battle site saying Europe it's been modernized or fixed up the access routes right. This looks like it did in nineteen forty two with the jungle overgrown to where it wants to the jungle has its way with the path so you are walking through history. But it's has it looked in nineteen forty two. You wrote about gold prospectors and British colonial forces atrocities. Which was there an awareness that you know white imperialists have read really had brutal hand here in this on this island on the island of New Guinea with the Spanish the British the Germans there there were colonial powers that the Dutch in Indonesia next door so a lot of that played out with the territorial bits and then World War One change data World War. Two changed more dramatically and then in the early Seventies Papua New Guinea became its own independent country with its own flag and some national anthem and its own pride. The sometimes gets tarnished. Today by the image of the rascals are near do wells who had this issue with the rascals all Joe and when you're on a bus going across Papua New Guinea you've got these two bit bandits out there and they're not gonNA kill you. They're just going to take everybody off for the bus. Take all their clothes and other jeweler and other cameras and just leave him naked there. And then they're gonNA laugh into the next valley What was the rascal situation for you? So we encountered it not on the trail but when we got to one of the maybe secular third largest community around. Which is Papa Data? And they were very much around the compound the we went into the GROCERY STORE. Jovan and our motor vehicle and then the gates were closed behind us. We did our shopping. But you'll get protective compound protective armed guards because they're these quote rascals out there and they call them rascals because they're they're not murderous thugs. They're just petty thieves. Is that the dealer. How would you well? They are both of the above. So the harder they do. So the RASCALS R. A. S. K. O. L. S. The rascals have morphed from being tribal feuds to coming into the major centers. Not always having jobs there becomes the drug trade had a lot of initiation sometimes for youngsters is not just robbing but it's assault and it's it's very hurtful things there. Also are feuds that remain unresolved from over the years and so there have been stories of truckers. Bean accosted usually. It is the guides. They are with the bear. The brunt of being accosted by another tribe and there are a lot of tribes. We've got an email here from Richard and Margaret River in Australia and Richard Rights. I taught in the capital city port-moresby at the University of Papua New Guinea for several years. It was very impressed at the language skills of the citizens there. There are over eight hundred languages in Papua New Guinea and most residents understand about three or four of them and actually use several languages. Were you aware of the amount of languages that the society has to deal with their? I became aware of that more through research encountering it because while we would hear songs in different languages being sung by the porters and some of them spoke different languages they would have talk casino or they would have about pigeon version by Papa. New Guinea has eight hundred thirty two different languages. There are six thousand eight hundred living languages in the world so it means that a small country small population twenty percent of all the languages in the world around that half an island exactly which has point one percent of the world's population and the only other country with eight hundred living languages is India and there are twelve percent the world population. So when you juxtapose that it goes back to the early settlements. Were all in pocket. Valley's spread along the ocean shore up rivers and they survived on their own in their languages. Were totally independent structures. This has traveled. Rick Steves were talking with Rick and his book is walking with ghosts in Papua New Guinea. If you just think why you were there. Was there a moment when you thought this is just an exposure to different world? And you're so thankful that you were there to benefit from that. I would think the middle of the night experiences when you just wake up. One Night I got up I want to the the Bhushan was coming back and the stars and they're only nine thousand stars. We actually can see with the naked eye and you could see more in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere because of the tilt whatever number I looked at they were mascarenas a billion and I felt the intimidation of the night sky and being in a country. Where at that moment I thought it was possibly the only person awake. So that was humbling and inspiring at the same time. I bet you're glad you took your friends offer up to go to Papua Guinean hike the CO quota trail. Will you know I would turn to monk every once in a while particularly if we've gone up something like the wall which is nearly vertical in your hearts just thumping tonight look at him? I'd say some walk across the country but you're glad you did. I am all right. Rick Antonsson fascinating the book walking with ghosts in Papua New Guinea. Thanks Rick Thank you travel with.
