Welcome to the point four, Monday, October the fifteenth. I'm Chris cillizza cutting through the political spin. Bring you the news. You need to know kind of an odd news nugget today. Elizabeth Warren, the Senator from Massachusetts, released a five plus minute video in which she goes back to where she grew up in Norman, Oklahoma to re but charges from Donald Trump and other Republicans that she is in fact not actually neighbor American. Now, this came up during her twenty twelve campaign for Senate against then incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown. The Boston Herald wrote a piece noting at the time that the Harvard Law School reported Warren as a minority teacher, they're facing criticism for diversity and Warren was this minority that got questions raised weren't says, she didn't know shouldn't told Harvard, but that she in fact believes she was some element native American. N- because her mother had told her that, well, the story got very, very complicated including Warren admitting that she actually had told both Harvard and Penn at some point during her time there that she was native American, Donald Trump has seized on this as he often does. He refers to Elizabeth Warren this Pocahontas he did it during the two thousand sixteen campaign done it a lot more of late as it becomes clear that Warren might run for president. So why did Warren do this? A slick produce campaign style video in which she talks to her brother's in which she has a noted geneticists from Stanford say, it's likely she used at least part even a small part native American. She did it because she's running for president number one, but also because she wants to show Democrats that she's not going to take Donald Trump's attacks lying down. She wants to show that she will not be attacked in unresponsive. She will be ready and she wants some ways to quiet. The whispers from Democrats that this. Could make it hard for her to win the nomination or beat Donald Trump because she's got this whole question of what she said in when she said it. I think it's a really interesting move. I think it's very clear in case it wasn't before it means Elizabeth Warren is running for president period, full stop. It also means to send a message that she is going to run hard. She is going to run unapologetically, and she's trying to deal with this now so that she doesn't have to deal with it in October two thousand nineteen. When the race for at least democratic primary is well underway, keep an eye. This is the start of a very long effort by Elizabeth Warren to define and redefine who she is in the eyes of democratic voters and the country.
