Listen: San Antonio, San Antonio San Diego And Football discussed on WEEI Late Night
"Weekend while you think first weekend without football. But did you check out the alliance of American football? And a lot of people are on social media was one of the top ten trending topics multiple top ten trending topics where about the alliance of American football and one of those franchises located in San Antonio. And that's where we had now on the best GSI dot com inside line. Jason mimics, the voice of the San Antonio commanders also hosts down at ESPN San Antonio joins us here on SP nation radio. Jason what's going on? Alex van just finishing up the coach's show with Mike Riley after a very successful opening wait for the alliance. And you know, I think a lot of people were curious what it was gonna be like where you're going to seek good football hard hitting football. I was impressed with what I saw not only from San Antonio San Diego game. But around the league, and I think the overnight ratings proved that wanna watch football, and we are going to watch football. It was a great start for the alliance. Now, did it even exceed your expectations. Honestly, I mean you've been around San Antonio. You know, the the polls kind of the fans but just seeing one the quality of the fan turnout in just seeing how fans received the the game in the play there. Just in San Antonio was that over exceeding your expectations. Yeah. I mean, I figured if they got north at twenty five thousand they would be in good shape, and they they were right around that just under twenty eight thousand fans are into it. San Antonio's, obviously, eight football hungry market that certainly wants an end. NFL team. But they're going to you know, San Antonio's will get behind the team that they have especially if the product is good, you know, quite frankly, that's what surprised me most. I know we have NFL caliber players on the roster. But when you figure basically a month of training camp. And then you're playing a game no off season. I wondered if if we would see a lot of mental mistakes Klay breakdowns. You know stuff that you would expect to see very early on in the season. But honestly watching the four games this weekend. I I was impressed with equality of play. When you consider. There was no off season, you know, talking to visa the quarterback for San Diego. He's a Mike park assist me. It's like three hundred plays man. To learn all this. And so I was impressed with that. You didn't see a ton of mental layers in poor play just because guys weren't in game shape. So I think the quality of football was what surprised me the most Jason mimics, the voice of the San Antonio commanders. One of the teams in the new alliance of American football league. The commanders did get the win over the weekend of one of the four teams with victories. And when you look at the the city support, and you mentioned San Antonio is a football hungry town going back to the days when you know, the saints were there for a couple weeks after the hurricane, and they had a few home games down there. And I know, you know, San Antonio has always been one of those cities people have kind of looked at twenty seven thousand in attendance. Also, you mentioned you just had a coach's show tonight. I mean, this has to be pretty impressive for the alliance as a brand new league to have this kind of support in one of their main markets. I mean, I think you know, if you ever saw Bill Polian founders of the league, you're you're a static with like you saw. Throughout but especially in San Antonio, the by seven thousand changes that highest attended game. And and certainly, you know, San Antonio is going to be that, you know, we we in San Antonio. Now, I've been doing radio here's a five ninety three. We watch football team. We want an NFL team. Well, we've had a lot of different pro leagues that have have come and gone everybody. Here says, you know, Jerry Jones would never allow it. Maybe I think the McNair is down in Houston would fight Carter to keep an NFL team out of San Antonio, everything that's been talked about I is is an AFC teams that would affect their television coverage in while while the Houston Texas are trying to grow a fan base in San Antonio in south Texas, the Cowboys have that. So I think the mayor's in the Texans would probably find it more. So than than Jerry Jones. But I think it's it's another example of San Antonio would support a team if we were to get one day in football is something that is just in our blood. It's there, you know, the raiders have talked about coming here numerous times, we know that's not gonna happen. There's talk about the chargers are coming here. The Rams we, you know, every time somebody needs to be stadium, basically build this one inner city or will move to San Antonio. I think a lot of ways. As the turn out for for the commanders didn't surprise most that have been hearing and seeing it and read support will continue with the product on the Bill continues to be what we saw that was a good quality football game. I mean, well, we'll give it a try. But if the product wasn't good"
