Listen: NFL, Sean Mcvay And Rams discussed on Under The Hood
"I think last week, and maybe less than that if you could in the gate before that. But now what you're Bisky back. He loves to Trey Burton act. He's burden's going to play a key role of this game. Now, I could also see the argument for Jordan Howard in the running game based on some other stats. So I I gave you. I'm not concerned. But if you look at yards per play, the bears are twenty twenty-first in the NFL. Okay. So there's such an explosive offense yet their yards per play is pretty low. So is that because the passing game isn't stretching the field, or is it because they're not averaging more on the ground to make things easier. The Rams coming into the game are third in yards per play first downs in a game. L A is second in the league. At twenty five point two per game has really low the bears are fourteen or are they twenty one point five. That's not bad something else. I look at his third down conversion percentage. The Rams are eighth. Forty four percent of the time. They convert on third down the bears are fourteen thirty nine percent at are coming off a two for fifteen. Yeah. So really bad. Before last week. They were much better. Yeah. But those are like, I guess it's you can make the argument that there are better running team the passing game would be a little bit better. But I think the way that Nagy's offenses designed the short passing game is a running game. You are up there and time of possession sixth in all football for average time of possession. That to me tells you that the passing game is working as your running game. And it's just get the ball to the open guy doesn't matter. If the guy's standing seven feet behind line of scrimmage beyond the quarterback, or if he's lined out as a wide receiver or tight end, Matt Nagy, and Sean McVay, obviously talked this game up as they are want to do is they talk to the media each and every day a lot of people look at Sean McVay, and they think the bears have their Sean McVay and Matt Nagy. Now, you talked about the similarities between the two guys the nice thing with both of us is that we I feel like we've been tiered and mentor by by really good, people and coaches at that. That were in the game for awhile. And so I just I have a ton of respect for Sean. I think he's he. The other the other thing that I think from what I hear from others at heavy. They're coached with him or know him. Well, or better than me is that I think he's a he has a great job connecting and he's a really good teacher. So that's that's that's a big part of this deal. Here is got to be able to reach your guys. The last thing he said there is something to think about and it's different when guys score and have a young coach like this. And you see them high five, and there may be jumping up and doing chest bumps whether things like that. I know it sounds a little thing. And I know that they are still respected as the coach. They're not the friends of the players, basically. But it's a little bit different than, you know, John, FOX, even Andy Reid are. We don't see handy redo it a lot of that stuff. But when Sean McVay it, you know, the Rams do something good. You see Sean McVay in their high five and he going after the same thing with mandate. That means a lot. I think to the to the players nowadays today's NFL players. It means a lot. Yeah. The enthusiasm. And when you win and you can score points. And it's fun. I think that doesn't mean a lot. And I think creating that atmosphere on any sport team now in twenty eighteen I think. You could probably argue that it's always been important or you could argue that the winning created that type of culture, but it seems they really does seem that type of winning attitude works so much better with today's younger player. It's it's almost like why you hear people thirst for wanting to work for Google race book or any of these big Silicon Valley companies because it wants to wear suits and ties. You have to wear ties you can you can you can bring your dog to the office. You know when you get to that. I I knew someone who used to work for Google, and they would bring their laundry with them to their desk. And then the someone at Google would come take their laundry do it for at their desk. Like, you know, you get free food, you know, coffee every everything is perks for the person working in that, it seems like a Sean McVay a Matt Nagy they do everything decree perks for the players. So they enjoy themselves while they're playing it's a lot. Like, Joe Manchin. Leases at least until they got serious last year, and they stopped doing the zoos and whatever the nonsense in the outfield. I asked I asked Trey Burton, which comes first camaraderie and funded the locker room or wins. And before we got it out of a mouth. He said wins wins first. So no matter how good you are coming into the season. If you start losing wipe the Jacksonville Jaguars this year. How do you think they're locker room is? I mean. You couldn't projected this. If you saw the way they played their last game better playoff game last year. The way. Ramsey were just miserable and got taken advantage of you could've seen. Maybe it was covered with Blake Bortles still there. Oh, yeah. But a lot of people pick them as the AFC Representative of the Super Bowl friend. I know for a fact on Sunday mornings over the course of the summer. I was yelling at the fact that Jacksonville if they had a quarterback would have played in the Super Bowl last year, and they probably would have won. Right. But Blake Bortles is terrible. And I know I'm not saying that I'm the only present new of terrible. But like it, you're right. The rain was on the wall because when you have an offense they can't score. Right. You limit the ways you can win a football game. So the only way Jacksonville can win is by running the ball time of possession and the defense holding the other team down. Well, guess what that whole philosophy was out the window in the first two weeks of the season because every team in the league is scoring with thirty scored tons appoint. Right lake so, okay. So you're gonna be the one team the buck the trend. Good luck with that. It didn't work. Eventually, you know, other things going to happen it it's been bad Jacksonville. And it's going to get terrorists. Last night was just a joke with their quarterback this year. Right. Yeah. Well yesterday was Your co. co said earlier today when he was given his pigs so get their quarterback this year because they'll be picking at the top of the draft. Yeah. Cuyler Murray here he goes. Well here the deal to play baseball. Right. He had a one year out. They the Oakland A's. I gave them five million to say you can play for one year. So so if you don't if you're unaware of the calamari story the Heisman Trophy presentation throw nine, and he's he's actually the odds favorite. Now. He passed Khatanga by law in the last day as the favourite ambigous to win the Heisman Trophy. He has a contract signed with the Oakland Athletics. The play baseball. They allowed him to play one year football. It has been reported. I think today on ESPN dot com. He's not quite saying that he's not going to go into the NFL draft. He's a little he's shorter isn't the eleven. Okay. So short. Yeah. He is short. I will give you that. I was hearing something on sports center earlier in the week that people seem to think because of the new way offense is being played in the NFL that that actually may not matter based on how accurate he is in how how many yards is put up in college. And now he's been the season. One of the key guys. This gave this week is going to be what Vic Fangio can do to try to slow down the Rams and somewhat has him Vic Fangio the other day. If this game Sunday's a chance for a defensive statement. A little excitement in a way to say Stephen on behalf of defensive football in this day and age, Emma. For for you going up against an offense. Well, we'd like to make that statement every week knowing the assignment this week is tougher than usual. But you know, that could happen any week in the game. And then weaken the league, so. Yeah. We accept the challenge and know that it will be hard and know that they will make some plays, and hopefully we'll make few of ours and come out on top. Now, one of the things one of the guys is really turned his, I don't know. He he got a lot of money because the bears match the Packers offer sheet but Kyle fuller. Nobody expected to see this. How to Kyle fuller and six interceptions? Now this year after the interception against the giants. And veg always asked. Why fuller has been so good this year? I just think it's an overall process of him gaining confidence through the time that we've been hearing through the ordeal that he's been through his first three years in the league. Putting in the time and study and being prepared. Just on a human level play at the start of the year. We dropped the interception against Green Bay. And he's come back from it. Having stink of it. It's always good to see a guy come back, but he hadn't come back, by luck or happenstance. He's worked hard, you know, he works hard mentally and preparation on the field. And he's done a good job preparing. And it's paid off. Now just thinking about this. When he mentioned they asked about the the drop in the Packers game. Think about the four games the bears lost this year. Had a twenty point lead against the Packers and counselor drafted interception late game. Which would have said, okay. They had a ten point lead against the patriots. They had a I want say it was a twelve eleven point lead against Miami. And they lost to the giants. They don't. Years ago. Dave watched everybody made fun of Dave wants dead. Because what he said we wanted to plays every game of the NFL seems except last night. Every game of the NFL seems to come down to water to plays, of course. And that's what it is one or two plays that turned the tide or Kyle fuller drops interception or a special teams touchdown for the pact or the patriots against the bears things. Like that ever. That's how close the NFL is. That's how Eric is in this league. That's how you can go from worst to first in what off-season? Yeah. You know? It's if you're are really into gambling on the NFL. And if you study this each and every week as you sit down on Sunday morning to kind of make your beds. The one thing that why you always have to remind yourself is for the most part all of the teams are even. Yeah. And you're like come on like, you're an idiot. Like some teams are really good. Some teams are really bad. They're really not some teams actually perform better than what they are in some teams played a little less, but like for the most part outside of a couple of outliers each and every year when you can usually do is you can pick the three or four teams that you know, are really good and the three or four teams that you know, are really bad. And if you bet with an against those teams usually can figure it out because all the stuff in the middle. You take the points. You look that way. And all of a sudden it gets a little bit easier. A little bit of an edge. I know it's not really scientific. But like for the most part, it's all the same. It is like most teams outside what five or six players that really make a difference. Here's Tom Brady. Aaron Donald outside of that you eliminate those guys. Most teams are pretty pretty close in even and then you look at injuries. And it's like, oh, so and so's out there for this team's going to lose that team always surprises you why? Because even the backups for the most part are somewhat even with what everything is in the NFL. I always find it amazing. When people just assume oh buffalo is starting a backup quarterback. Yeah. Oh, they're getting seven points at home. Exactly. Yeah. I'm taking the bills. And then they they beat outright whoever they're playing here. And it's there all the NFL. They're all the same the parodies. They're all the same. There's what four really good teams this year. Right. Maybe five are reporting. Are we putting the chargers into that conversation? There died at three right? They are and that win on the road at Pittsburgh. I think was very impressive daily look terrible at the beginning of the first quarter. And all of a sudden he came out of nowhere. So what we've got New Orleans. We've got the Rams we've got the chiefs. We've got the chargers and then for fifth year looking at is it New England is it cargo is at Dallas. Yeah. Houston is pretty good. They haven't lost it awhile. So we can agree on three hands down. I think you, and I both agree that the chargers are probably pretty close to that. And then it's okay, then you get a whole mess of TI. And then that mess kind of bleeds into Minnesota. And pittsburgh. And then all of a sudden now we're looking at all right now, we're close. Now, we see the dolphins were in the middle now and Tennessee in right? Like that. What the NFL is. It's it's a bunch of teams are average is a lot of you got a couple of teams that are really really good. Yeah. Betty, just three or four, right? And we come back baseball. The cardinals did something really big on the cubs going to do anything. How about the White Sox? We're going to hear about from BUSTER only we're going to hear from Mark learner who is actually with the nationals. They had Harper. Does look like he'll be back there. But some people still think there's a possibility we'll talk some baseball. We come back for final half hour. You wanted to bid three one two three three two three seven seven six black Hubner in for Jay hood, right here on ESPN one thousand why is."
