Listen: Aaron Rodgers, Mike Mccarthy And Josh Mcdaniels discussed on Howie Carr
"Green Bay Packers Super Bowl champ in two thousand and ten after an ugly loss last Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals. He was let go literally that night. Rodney on football night in America you and coach Tony Dungy getting into a heated discussion in terms of was this handled correctly by the Green Bay Packers organization for those who missed it. Rodney did you think the Packers handled this correctly after twelve and a half years and all the wins and the success that Mike McCarthy had and the stability. He brought did they handle this correctly by firing on that on the spot on Sunday after that loss? I would've never fired him on the spot. But I would have fired him, and I would have fired him a couple of years ago. I mean, I think that's what people are really missing the point. Like, this was really delaying the inevitable. Anyway, I felt like this team has not gotten better. His message has gotten stale. Yes, he's a very accomplished coach he's accomplished a lot of things. And maybe what they've done is said. Hey, monday. Sprout brought him into office set down and said, hey, we we decided to go a different way. But I'm not gonna keep you on my staff. I'm not gonna keep you as the head coach when we know we no longer want you, and I think losing today. Arizona cardinals. That was absolutely the final draw like when you lose to one of the worst teams in the league, the body language of the players Aaron Rodgers it is noticeable that Aaron Rodgers is completely disinterested implant football or plan. Football for Mike McCarthy. He's your one hundred fifty million dollar men that you just invested in it. Like, you're delaying inevitable sock. I I understand what coach Dungy was saying. But at the same time who gives a crap about players when they when they get fired like I'm supposed to really feel sorry, and I'm not trying to say this disrespectful manner. But why would I feel sorry for head coach that's guaranteed millions and millions of dollars. Okay. He walks away. He can do whatever the heck he wants he's gonna wind up with another job. But yet when a player gets cut he walks away with nothing the players walk away with anything. But we have that we hold the coach to a higher standard. Of course. He's got millions of dollars guaranteed and to me do businesses business year they could have fired him on a Monday or Tuesday or something like that. But at the end of the day when you're not doing your job. It wasn't personal. It's a business. It was a business decision. And we all have to live with it. You're right. And he sits out next year. If he wants to be a head coach she's had signed a one year contract extension at the start of this this year. So he's financially set next year as well. Look he's been there. So many years Mike McCarthy is millions of dollars. I'm not gonna cry for Mike McCarthy at first I actually agreed with Tony Dungy. I did not gonna lie. I thought okay. It's disrespectful to get rid of a guy who's done so much for your organization like this and the more. I thought about it during the week. I thought to myself, you know, what they did him a favor. And here's why Mike McCarthy. Everybody knows is a pretty much a Dead Man Walking there. Right. They know that he's going to get candid the end of the year. So you save the agony of every single week regardless of what happens and then game. The media's questions are going to be about his job. That's all they can ask him about. Secondly, by letting go of Mike McCarthy now you actually let him get a head start on potentially finding his next job. Right. If you wait till black Monday. You fire them the day that the rest of the league fires are coaches. He just becomes another guy in the shuffle. Mike McCarthy now right now week fourteen of the NFL season is available to teams the New York Jets can look and say all right. You know, what already Mike McCarthy's available the Browns can look and say, all right? He's already available. We know that maybe we start to send out feelers to Mike McCarthy's reps already. So in fact, I think the Packers did Mike McCarthy of favor by saving him for those. From those awkward press conferences for the next three weeks having to answer questions about his job. When everybody knows he's getting fired, Dan, helping him the job, buddy. And it's just like you can't take this stuff. Personally may like the team wasn't playing and Mike knew that he had failed as a head coach. I understand that he was a Super Bowl winning coach and coaches need to be treated a little better. And like I said, I would've never kept him on the staff just for the sake of a just as respect nominee to do. What's best? It's bigger than Mike McCarthy. I got a fan base that I'm responsible for I a team. Fifty three guys in there that I'm responsible for as the general manager as the head guy. You know what I'm saying? So as much as I respect Mike McCarthy. Yeah. I would have said maybe hey on a Monday. I would have brought him into office made it, you know. A, you know, a big press conference or something like that. But at the end of the day he failed at his job he failed at his job. And he's going to be that guy. That's always remember as the guy that didn't take Aaron Rogers to multiple Super Bowls. How much do you put on Rogers? What I mean by that? Is you mentioned just watching it? You can tell Aaron Rodgers disinterested right now in playing with Mike McCarthy, and the more you learn about Aaron Rodgers is he seems to be a difficult guy. And he seems to be a difficult guy to work with. And isn't there blame that needs to be put on Aaron Rodgers to the point where I think I'm not saying Mike McCarthy was a scapegoat because he's responsible for the fact that they went seven to nine last year, and they're they're four seven and one this year. But the reality is Aaron Rodgers, I don't think is a guy that really helps out that way, I think Aaron Rodgers sometimes can be a guy that makes it more difficult to win games these days because of the fact that he seems combative. Him at times. Yeah. Aaron Rodgers is that way, and I haven't been in locker room with them. So I don't know. Exactly. But yeah, I mean, the fact that he would call out some of his teammates we saw that in training camp talking about the wide receivers weren't weren't catching the ball and running a proper routes Tom Brady would never call out his guys. He just keep everything in house. So yeah, I mean, there's a certain level. And that's why this Green Bay job isn't as appealing to a lot of guys because who wants to go in and have really I mean, let me ask you this is Aaron Rodgers still in his prime versus past him. Oh, I would be the optimistic say I think he's still in his prime. How many more years does he have in this prime? He's thirty five. Now says he wants play these forty he signed till he's forty I would say look not everybody's Tom Brady or drew Brees to play a high level and to thirty nine forty. But I think Aaron Rodgers probably has three good years. Okay. But here's the problem. The names that we talk about as the next potential head coaches. The Josh mcdaniels of the world is Aaron Rodgers gonna respect a forty two year old Josh mcdaniels. I think he will yell. The I I think he would you know, why? Because I think first of all he worked with Tom Brady a guided Aaron Rodgers has a tremendous amount of respect for. Secondly, Josh was offered a head coaching job where he didn't even want to go. He's he decided to stay a third Josh has Super Bowl rings. So it's not like, you're you're coming into a college guy. And all of a sudden, you're looking at this young guy, and he's not very accomplished. Josh is very very well respected. He was offered a head coaching job. And he turned it down at the last minute because he wanted to stay with if you can deal with Tom if you can deal with the all the intricacies that come with coach and Tom Brady, and yet Tom is not you know, maybe out there as prevalent with his voice in his opinions. Like Aaron Rodgers. But Tom is a very strong minded guide. He's going to challenge you as a coach, and he's going to put things on you. And he's always going to question certain things that Tom Brady is he's a smart guy. He's a very competitive guy. So is Josh mcdaniels built to deal with Aaron Rodgers. Absolutely. I think Tony Dungy said this about a month ago. And I think they have to put surrounding with a little bit more talent. Obviously. And going to have to build up that defence a lot more. But yeah, I think Josh mcdaniels is more than capable or, you know, going in there, and and really changing the mindset of Aaron Rodgers to a certain degree. Rodney Harrison Dan Schwartzman the safety blitz. Yarn NBC sports radio. My thing is this though. And maybe this is a good thing for Josh mcdaniels. Josh mcdaniels isn't gonna walk in there and kiss Aaron Rodgers is rear end. But I think Aaron Rodgers may wanna guy that's gonna walk in there and kisses rear end. I don't think he wants the problem. You know, I I don't think that I think he wants somebody to I think he wants someone with the level of creativity. Think about if som- McVeigh was with Aaron Rodgers. Air Roger skill set, which Sean McVeigh all those guys that we don't know their names a wide receivers and Davante Adams. They would have so much fun. Aaron is not having fun anymore. You look at him. He looks miserable. All the time. At least in the game. During the game. We used to see air crack a smile hit taps a money on the. But if they hit he doesn't even do that anymore. It's like, okay, I'm just punching in I'm punching out because he's become this interested no level of creativity on offense. Not a lot of motion. Not a lot of shifts just lineup and let Aaron Rodgers and really Mike McCarthy he should be thanking Aaron Rodgers because Aaron Rodgers made him look like a better coach than what he was. Because Aaron Rodgers always had to pull out all these tricks out his magical hat, you think Mike McCarthy got a little lazy because he had Aaron Rodgers their what I mean by that is, you know, Aaron Rodgers can create you know, Aaron Rodgers can roll out and thread the needle and complete passes where we go. My goodness. No one else can do that. Do you think that Mike McCarthy in terms of your right? The creativity was gone years ago. But is that because he relied too heavily on Aaron Rodgers. And didn't think that he had the scheme to help Aaron Rodgers even more? I think I that he was he's he's he's a guy that stuck in the nineties as far as offenses west coast offense. I think he was really stuck in the nineties, and he had this incredible super athlete at quarterback was extremely smart new knew how to counter diagnose defenses knew how to re defenses and and just made a whole bunch of incredible plays that made him look like a better coaching. What he was. And I think finally with all the injuries and everything people started to see hey as a defensive coordinator, they don't do very much on offense. They're very very stagnant. They're very very boring. They're very very. You know, just playing on offense so defensive coordinators had, you know, I mean, of course, keep Aaron Rodgers in the pocket jammed receivers plaster two guys when he's scrambling around. But eventually a couple hits here near the knee injury. Then all of a sudden, you see okay, look at the lack of creativity and tell me win has Mike McCarthy ever developed a backup quarterback. That's a great question. That's a great point. Never Brett Hundley to Sean Kaiser, none of these guys. You're right. Absolutely. Right. And he's lived off. The fact he sat Aaron Rodgers their it's been a predictable offense, and it hasn't gotten any better. Well, here's one more question for you. Because you know, you're a big fan of Josh mcdaniels. If you're Josh mcdaniels do you want to go work with the thirty five year old quarterback? That's got three or four more years or say, do you want to go work in Cleveland with the Baker Mayfield and develop a young guy that you could after ten to twelve years, I won't make more sense. I wanna go to Cleveland. I wanna go to Cleveland because I have Baker Mayfield. I have Jarvis Landry. I have a plethora of young very young talent. And plus I have some, you know, draft choices. I would have a bunch of money to spend. I would love to go to Cleveland. I'm not gonna pitch Green Bay Green Bay. Yeah. What about the team? I one hundred percent why am I going to time my boat to a car? That's thirty five years old rather than do. So to a guy that's. Twenty-three who shows that he's got ability that may listen a bit more because he's younger and still learning might use you to work with apps. One hundred percent with you Green Bay's, not a sexy job. Just because Aaron Rodgers is there. Let me make mcdaniels. Yup. You had mentioned do I think that McCarthy almost took Aaron for granted. It's almost one of those things where when you have a level of coaching like our coaching was so good at the patriots. I think at times we took our coaching for granted because we were. So prepared all the time. I think say if your husband, and you come home, and you have a hot cooked meal every single day. I think you take it for granted. I think you will you take your wife or your significant other for granted when they have a meal 'cause y'all automatically know. Okay. That meal is going to be there. You already know the Aaron Rodgers gonna make four people mis-throw across his body sixty yards down the field and make incredible. I think you become numb to it. Because you're spoilt you get used to it. And I think at times that's what happened out in Green Bay. Do you have a nice home cooked meal waiting for you every night? Rodney. Yeah.."
