Listen: Vikings, Seattle And Seattle Seahawks discussed on 24 Hour News
"Say. Oh, a Donna Saturday CO Steve Eric Jonathan hanging out vikes Seahawks Monday night. Centurylink in Seattle isn't still considered the loudest stadium in the NFL. I continue to hear that Mike Zimmer was asked an older zero ahead in Kansas City Jonathan low of bringing that up. Maybe now of Kareem hunt looking for work. It might not be quite as loud. I had to get the. That's a flaming arrow there. I had Kareem hunt on my fantasy football squad. I I had Leonard fournette and Kareem hunt. I'll think about that at the beginning of the season fantasy foot that that's a pretty good look as formidable. It's not serving you. Well, look at me. I hope you have depth. I don't and I'm five and eight and I'm done. The vice. They're on the brink going into this season, gentlemen. There were very high expectations. They went out and spent a lot of money on Kirk cousins twenty eight million dollars over three seasons guaranteed. Unheard of money in the NFL. Where are we now? A little bit better than my fantasy football team but square squarely on the bobble. This is not a done deal that they get into the playoffs. Oh, not at all. They really need to win this game against Seattle. Because right now the Seahawks are the top wildcard. And the Vikings are the second wildcard if they lose. Then you run the chance of a leading Seattle gained more ground on you. And also letting some of the other guys catch up, maybe a Carolina, perhaps a Washington Philadelphia. Whoever that's the glass being half empty now. If you wanna look at the glasses being half full when the Vikings take the field on Monday night at CenturyLink. They're gonna already know how the bears Rams did tomorrow night at Soldier Field. It's certainly not a given that the Chicago Bears are going to beat the LA Rams. The Rams have the best record in the NFL. So potentially the bears lose again, and maybe Carolina gets beat in their game and the Vikings. No, they have a chance to go out and win against Seattle and gain a lot of ground. So this thing can go both ways now last week in New England when they took the field Chicago had lost Carolina had lost. They could have taken advantage, but they failed to pounce on an opportunity to gain some valuable ground. So. Who knows how it's going to go. But the only thing you can control is your own game. So Minnesota has to go out and find a way to win it. You're in Foxborough your thoughts on that game. I watched the lion's share of it from the couch. I wasn't impressed. I wasn't impressed in some ways to get a tip your cap. The Tom Brady one of the all time greats Bill ballot. Check one of the all time greats hard to compare eras, but you can put Bill ballot. Check in the Vince Lombardi category, the George Halas category in his era. He is one of the all-time great coaches, whether you like them or not seem deal with Tom Brady, they found a way to get it done in a salary cap era where there's a ton of player movement where they punish teams that have success by leading their best players Levi of free agency. They continue to get it done. I just wasn't impressed considering how much was on the line and how the Vikings performed, but that was for my couch. You're in the building. Well, I think the mystique and the aura surrounding New England especially in Foxborough. It is very real. When you're there, you sense it you look up in one of the end zone. You see the five. Super Bowl banners. So they are displayed proudly so you know, all of that as a backdrop, look it was a ten ten game in the third quarter. The Vikings tied it up, and you thought okay, maybe they're gonna make a run. And if you get a win at Foxboro in December. That's epoch in my is very few teams went in Foxborough, especially in the winter. But right away after Bailey tied up with that field goal. New England came down and gashed the Vikings. They move right through them for a quick score capped off by the Brady to Josh Gordon. Touchdown toss. And then it wasn't that much longer where they got another touchdown. It was twenty four to ten and you knew that was game set match. So the Vikings just didn't seem to be able to to you know, grasp at the moment. Maybe the moment was too big for them. And I think there's a lot to what you're saying about the Belichick Brady mystique. It's there it's part of the deal. But certainly the patriots. At at that point in the third quarter. It was a ten ten game the Vikings it's been well documented all week. They did not run the ball very much and they're not committed to the run. And and they had some success in that game. Dobbin cook was able to come up with some chunk gains against New England. But they didn't stick to it. They got away from it. And I truly believe Steve Stevie T running. The mindset you have to commit to it. And you look at the numbers for Minnesota right now thirtieth in the NFL in rushing out of thirty two teams Seattle Monday nights opponent number one averaging almost one hundred fifty yards per game. So the Vikings can talk about it. Mike zimmer? Jonty Felipo the OC. They can talk about it all they want. Will they commit to it? What if they fall behind fourteen to three Monday night in a raucous CenturyLink field will they stick to the script and try to ground and pound because as an offensive lineman run blocking is so much different than pass blocking run blocking his rogue grading. It's. Ical pipe pass blocking. You're going back on your heels. It's footwork. It's getting your hands in the right spots. Too much different scenario. Eric. I still. Have to go back to one thing. And it is a lightning rod in the minute. They signed it. It would be a lightning rod in a six five and one season. And you have a franchise quarterback that you're paying twenty eight million dollars guaranteed. For three years has Kirk cousins lived up to expectations. There are a lot of factors that go into quarterback play offensive line the running game the quality of the receivers. I think we can say. Pretty clearly the receivers are as good as getting the NFL the entire group or receivers coward off at tight end stuff on digs Adam Phelan and the guys that play behind that main group pretty solid group. I'd put it up against just about any group in the NFL. Has cousins through twelve games? Lived up to the expectations of his contract with all those factors being considered. I would say no, he's not. He's not been a transformational player. You know, we saw what Green Bay was without Aaron Rodgers. Now Green Bay has other problems here in two thousand eighteen they're not going to be in the playoffs. They've made a coaching change there's turmoil. But generally, Tom Brady, no matter what the cast of characters have been is a transformational player drew Brees same deal. He he's a guy that transforms. I don't get that sense from Kirk cousins, I didn't win he was in Washington. And I don't know there's a reason why shington let him go and brought in Alex Smith in by the way there were running away with that division when he went down with an injury. Now, it's a whole new ballgame. Dallas has caught fire. It looks like Dallas is a team to be Philadelphia may get hot at the right time and sneak into the playoffs the jury's still out but back to Kirk cousins. Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman put a huge chunk of their future with this team in the hands of Kirk cousins. And I will argue in general he hasn't delivered. Yeah. Yeah. It's hard to it's hard to debate that I mean, a rising tide lifts all boats in Kirk cousins, you know, when you look at his numbers, they're pretty good twenty three touchdown passes nine interceptions thrown for almost thirty five hundred yards. He can stuff a box score with some good numbers on a weekly basis. But there's no signature win yet. Now if he goes out to Seattle and gets that victory Monday night, there's your signature win. But but did you throw in fumbles into that equation as well? Now, he gives up the ball a lot. He's also got to pick sixes this year for touchdowns in key games one against New Orleans one against Chicago. And and you know what? And this has been played up during the week here in the twin cities Kirk cousins in Monday night games as Owen said. Six. In Thursday night games. He's one in five so on games that aren't played on Sunday. This guy is one in eleven so he and Vikings, but he's going to be the lightning rod because of the money. He needs to go out to the Pacific northwest and find a way to win in a very hostile situation. I've been to CenturyLink before that fan base is real. They've got the twelve they take pride in being the twelve's Pete Carroll plays it up the entire Seahawk franchise. Does they're going to be ready and the cool thing for Seattle is this was supposed to be a rebuild and reload year for the Seahawks. But now they have a legitimate chance to get into the postseason. Russell wilson. You talking about a transformational quarterback. I think Russell Wilson is close to being in that conversation to look at his numbers. Twenty nine touchdown passes. Five picks twenty seven hundred sixteen yards. They had for a while there when he had beast mode marshawn Lynch, it was easy that gave you a dimensional attack where you could run. And pass. It was multidimensional. They got away for marshawn Lynch, they let him go. Now, they have this kit. Carson and the running game is back. Chris Carson is solid in his second year. So I I think the Seahawks what they've done is pretty cool now their way out of the race in the NFC west. They're like four games behind the LA Rams. But in the two games where they play de LA it came down to the final minute. So I think the Seattle Seahawks are going to be a tough out on Monday night. But the Vikings have to find a way to go in there and get it done. But they haven't really shown us any sign that they're gonna be able to do it. Here's the issue for the Vikings. If they lose this game, they're going to have to get above Seattle. Probably and again Carolina, and Minnesota may be fighting Philadelphia may be fighting for that last playoff spot. But Seattle if they win this game they're going to be in phenomenal position. Because of who they they've played and who they've beaten they have beaten, Dallas pla- possible. Wildcard contender. They have beaten. Green Bay, basically started there knocking knocking them out of the playoff picture. They have beaten Carolina on the road on the road. If they beat Minnesota. That's basically four of the teams that you were thinking you were going to be fighting for position with and they beat them all so that puts them a leg up on a lot of teams if Dallas falters and Philadelphia catches them or Washington catches them. If Carolina continues to struggle. Green Bay's, basically out of it. But let's say they surge toward the end of the year and they get hot and win four in a row. Seattle's got a leg up on all of them. Minnesota wants to get a leg up on Seattle. If it comes down to it. That's one of the big things about was no question. I think the Vikings lose then they're going to battle Carolina and somebody else for that final wildcard if they win then they have shot at maybe being the top wildcard any keep their divisional title hopes afloat. And let's not forget, look, we know this your one and two seeds in the NFC are going to be the LA Rams in New Orleans don't know which order yet. But they're going to have the first round by. So if Minnesota sounds crazy now, but if the Vikings could find a way to win the division, which is still in play you get a home game week one early January. If you go in as a wildcard, you're on the road, either Chicago or Dallas where you know, maybe Washington or Philly when the east. So there's a lot of scenarios for the Minnesota Vikings that could happen. But the main thing is they got to get a feel good when they gotta go out to Seattle and get it done. I talked about cousins being on six on Monday nights. One in five on Thursday nights. Pete Carroll at CenturyLink in primetime games since it became the Seahawks. Head coach is fifteen and two they will be revved up and ready to go. Oh, it's gonna be it's gonna be a brutal test. And you're right going back to Seattle. I I didn't consider them a playoff contender at all this year. I mean, they were completely off my radar when I worked at teams could be in the mix in the NFC. So it really is a great story. You can put their Chicago barriers in that category. You know now that they got a pretty good player from Oakland landed in their lap right before the season. And they've really taken off new the Rams we're gonna. Pretty good you figured the saints. We're going to be a contender. You know?."
