Listen: President, United States And ISIS discussed on Anderson Cooper 360
"The president tweeted that his intentions on Syria or no different. From his original statement, the United States will be leaving at a quote proper pace while at the same time continuing to fight ISIS and keeping them on honest. That's not exactly true. What the president originally said is different. The apparent reason? He tweeted that today is that national security adviser John Bolton has contradicted. What seemed to be the president's policy yesterday bulletin told reporters that the United States will leave Syria only under the condition that Turkey promises, not to attack Curtis allies there later in a news conference with Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Bolton again referred to a conditional withdrawal. We're going to be discussing the president's decision to withdraw. But to do so from northeast Syria in a way that makes sure that ISIS is defeated and is not able to re revive itself and become a threat again end to make sure that the defense of Israel, and our other friends in the region is absolutely assured and to take care of those who have fought with us against ISIS and other terrorist groups, well, you may remember just a few weeks ago, the president claim that ISIS already had been wiped out. I'm quoting he said, we have defeated ISIS and Syria. My only reason for being there during the Trump presidency originally, a president had eight thirty day timeline to withdraw the troops. Which was later extended to four months then yesterday, the president said this take look we are pulling back in Syria. We're going to be removing. I never said we're doing it that quickly, but we're decimating. When I was elected president to years ago. Isis was all over Syria and all over Iraq. We've wiped out ISIS in Iraq, keeping them honest. He said they were doing it quickly thirty days. In fact, the same day he claimed victory over ISIS. He posted a video saying they're coming back now full stop that. They're quote, getting ready. You're going to see them soon. Meaning US troops are boys. Are young women are men they're all coming back and they're coming back. Now, we won keeping them honest. The only thing that's happening. Now is that the old policies seems to be back in place? Joining me now is retired army Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters Colonel thanks for being with us. Should it? Come as any surprise that these plans for a thirty day, which are all are now being walked back with the president wants to admit that they are not well on a very practical logistical level. We couldn't leave in thirty days unless you wanted to leave behind very expensive military equipment classified gear. So it was just another example of the president not having any idea whatsoever. What he was talking about. But as far as policies go, there's no consistency. The president is is very childlike. He's loyal to the other kid that he's playing with at the moment. He was on the phone with aired Yvonne their pals airlines says, you know, you you really ought to you know, the Kurds bad people. There are terrorists. We'd take care of that, and blah, blah and Trump impulsivity Mace announce it now you have John Bolton trying to walk it back further because the job is not done. And it's problem on multiple levels. Anderson first of all any US presidential announcement or policy that pleases, Vladimir Putin, the Iranians the Shaw, and ISIS is inherently flawed policy. But Secondly, it's not just about the Kurds. Although they're very important, and they've been outside of Israel, the best ally we have ever had in the Middle East brave. They're doing the fighting. Ground us. We're supporting them. But it's not just about the shame. The disgrace betraying the currents rather. It's a global issue for the United States because after the president attack NATO and stirred doubt about whether we'd support our NATO allies. Now, he's threatening to walk away. From the Kurds said, he was going to do it alliances are critical the president himself said we can't be the world's policeman.."
