"Been evacuated. Washington Washington is blaming Iran for the protest. Wait Iran. But we're talking about Iraq. It's all really confusing. Said help explain. I'm joined by the world's Chris Wolf Chris. Who are these protesters well cow pictures? Show and witnesses say that these are mostly men who belong to a pro Iranian militia group called Qatar Hezbollah most not carrying carrying weapons but many all wearing those uniforms of that organization and carrying their flags. This is the same group. Carol that was bombed by the. US Air Force on Sunday and the same group that allegedly attacked the US base near Kirkuk on Friday killing a US contractor so just to recap events wise we had Friday the attack on the US base. which killed an American Eric on Sunday the US retaliates there s strikes and then today we have the assault on the embassy compound so going back to that Friday attack at the US base? Why would this this Iraqi militia group that is loyal to Iran attack a US base We don't know for sure but there have been dozens of similar attacks over the past few months against. US targets in Iraq. Not as big as this. which involved thirty rockets that the? US government says the attacks are being directed by Iran. Iraq's big neighbor to the east Iran's and going broke under the pressure of the global use embargo on oil sales Trump's maximum pressure campaign. And it's been trying to find ways to put pressure back on on the US to relax those sanctions and one of the ways it's using is to have its friends around the Middle East region Goff. US targets Oh so real proxy anything Iran using a militia group in Iraq to go after US interest there too in some roundabout way pressure the US to lift sanctions or to who deal with Iran. Right yes so indirect pressure campaign okay. Another question is why are there even any armed militias roaming around freely in Iraq at this point yeah let alone once controlled by a foreign country like Iran. We have to go back to two thousand fourteen. That's when Isis the Islamic state movement annihilated one third of the the Iraqi army in a single battle so the Baghdad government appealed to the masses of Iraqis to help defend the capital and hundreds of thousands of people formed these ad hoc walk militias"
