Oil has been washing up on southern California beaches all week since a leak in an underwater pipeline sent thousands of gallons of heavy crude into ocean waters this bill has filed the sands of Huntington beach and could keep some beaches closed for weeks or longer crude also washed into Talbert Marcia sensitive wetland it has been spotted down the Orange County coast as far as Dana point with tar balls reported as far south as Carlsbad in San Diego county it's still a mystery exactly how much is spilled the Coast Guard estimates between twenty five thousand and one hundred and thirty two thousand gallons cleanup crews and investigators are on the scene researchers say the impact on wildlife will take a while to understand crude oil components can linger beneath the ocean's surface and affect tiny organisms that are ingested by fish which are later eaten by birds marine mammals and people I'm Ben Thomas
