Listen: John Elway, Broncos And Pat Bolan discussed on Mut & Callahan
"Way. Bowen was never one for the limelight. But he always, again, knew where the team was in his area of the country, and it wasn't just Denver Broncos nation Broncos country as they call it just permeated all through that through that Rocky Mountain region. It's so he's been battling Alzheimer's for a number of years. And so you kind of knew eventually that this day was going to come as I was just hoping I was hoping he would be alive in. Whatever capacity he was alive. For the hall of fame ceremony in canton Ohio, and I don't know what faculties he would have had in August when that happened. I was hoping I would hope that he kind would know what was happening how he was being honored how us being respected at the ceremony. I know it will still be a very, very big deal for Bronco fans to venture out there to see Pepple and get in despite the tragic news today that he passed away. But one of the things that he was known for was his real loyalty to the players if you were Broncos uniform, and it really didn't matter how long you wore it. If you're part of his family, you're part of his family and every player from John Elway to Terrell Davis to rod Smith to Ed McCaffrey to just name name name that had been part of his thirty five year. Run as owner of the Broncos will tell you how much he he meant to them, as somebody who. Genuinely cared about everything that was going on in their life. Not just how how you can do what you can do for me to make my franchise better. He cared about their lives Elway talked about this, all the time all the time about how, you know, Pat bolan was around, since he was a kid. He was a young kid going to Denver to be the quarterback of the Broncos. And Pat bolan has been in his life every day since. A lot of guys talked about this when he did this one's for John. He just he genuinely was excited that finally after three Super Bowl embarrassments for John Elway that John Elway got the Super Bowl that had alluded him for so long that many thought he would never get remember the year that John Elway and the Broncos won that first Super Bowl was they were a road team. They were a team that had to go on the road to win their games. They had to go to Kansas City. They had to go to Pittsburgh. They were underdogs in those games. They were massive underdog against Brett farve in the Packers in that Super Bowl, and it was always helicopter dive in Terrell Davis and everything that was that the Broncos needed to do to win that game. They won that Super Bowl. It was people talked about that, that Super Bowl people talked about what the Packers could do to Denver in that game and saying, my God can John Elway put up with another. Super Bowl loss another humiliating Super Bowl loss. What's it gonna be like on Sunday? When Elway loses his fourth and loses another big one. And the Broncos just would not go away. And they didn't lose and they won. They would want they won the following year and Elway return the favor because the first Super Bowl should've been Pepple, but Pat bolan knew it belong to John Elway and the second Super Bowl win that belong to Pepple. And John Elway made sure everybody knew that was for Pepple bolan sacrifice that I honor to give it to John and John gave it right back the following year. Everyone in town calls Mr. beat whether you work for not, that's the way that you dress of having done radio shows in Denver. We'd always talk about Mr. bean, we would always say, well, Mr. B's to say this, Mr. B's got to do this, the best memory, I have of Pat bolan was in two thousand eight. He fired Mike Shanahan. Now he had said Mike Shanahan had a job for life within the organization because Shinhan was the head coach of the team that won them to championships. And that's, that's an easy thing to say when you're feeling great and you feeling like everything's going well and the teams making the playoffs and you putting together competitive team and maybe you don't win a Super Bowl every year. But you know what? You got a really good team. It's another to keep that throughout all the hardships. And there was a point with the Broncos couldn't have Shanahan on the sidelines anymore, and it wasn't the man was a bad coach or he did something wrong. It just the team, you just need a different voice, and you need another person to come in, and he cried Pepple was in tears at the press conference. And I remember going this man really is amazing. He really is amazing. He cares so much about this, Dan. Snyder probably wouldn't do that other owners wouldn't do that. They would just say this is a business. It's not. Personal. It's business for bowling it was personal. They, he, he was very good friends with Mike Shanahan, and both new this had to had to be done, and bolan didn't like it, but he knew it had to be done. He brought in Josh mcdaniels, and Josh mcdaniels was in the Polian in a foot in football gear. He wanted control of everything. He wanted what Mike Shanahan had worked to get within the organization, which was really complete power, and Josh mcdaniels wanted that from day one, and it never felt right? It never felt right within the org. They won that the first six games of the year, and everyone was going to happen. And then afterwards it started going this, this doesn't feel the same. It doesn't feel like it's pats team. It feels like this young guy is taking over. But when Josh mcdaniels embarrass the organization by getting caught filming the San Francisco, forty Niners in London bolan had a problem. He had a very very bad football team. He had a really embarrassing football team not only on the field but off the field. And he did the one thing that I think, good owners need to do sometimes that he had to get the Broncos to a position where he had to give the fan base, the trust back that everything was going to be okay. And he had to remind the fan base that, yes, this is embarrassing. I know it's embarrassing for you. And I'm going to try to fix that. So it's not embarrassing for you. And that's when he brought in John Elway now at the time, Elway was successful at a lot of things that he did not only being a quarterback of the NFL his successful car dealership. He had run the Colorado crush gave them. An arena championship Elway was very, very successful person. He's the king of Denver, but bowl, it was putting the front office position where we feed other athletes fail just because you played football were star in it doesn't mean you can run a team. There are certain aspects of the running of day-to-day operations. That you have to understand you have to know how a scout you have to know what free agents you want. You have to run the money. Sometimes can we pay this guy? This can we pay this guy that can I get a contract? It's very team friendly. How do I manage the cap all of those things that just because you play in the NFL doesn't mean you have success at that? But the one thing, the hiring of John Elway did was for bowl. And it was it was a message to the fans that you will never be embarrassed about this team again, I will not bring in somebody that is going to embarrass this organization again. And you love, John. I love John and John is now in charge, and for me that was a big, bold move, because again, we weren't sure how gonna pay off and paid off. Well when he convinced Peyton Manning to come play for the team. But my goodness. To, to watch that team fall apart. They were four and twelve when just just awful. They lost the raiders. The oh fifty eight points at home to the raiders of all teams."
